Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer More than 500 people were without power overnight Wednesday, March 11, north and south of Black Creek Road in the Horsefly area after an impaired female driving a red pickup truck struck a power pole.

RCMP were called to the scene of the collision at 10:55 p.m., Staff Sgt. Del Byron told the Tribune Thursday.

“The power pole was broken and knocked down,” Byron said.

Hydro was restored to the impacted residences by 5:44 a.m.

Thursday, according to BC Hydro’s website.

RCMP members were also dispatched to a domestic incident on Toosey First Nation, at 2:06 a.m.

One female was arrested. Investigation into the incident continues.

Drive.

When a witness stopped to ask the driver if he was OK, the driver took off.

Earlier, the truck had been spotted driving up Highway 97 and going into the ditch by Boston Pizza.

Members of the newly-formed rural advisory council were named by the Minister of Forests Steve Thomson and MLA Donna Barnett Wednesday.

The 14 members come from different areas of the province, including Tolko’s Woodland’s manager Tom Hoffman who will represent the Cariboo region.

Of the 87 people nominated for the council, 11 were from the Cariboo.

Barnett, who will co-chair the council, said choosing the members was a tough

MLA Donna Barnett decision.

“Quite a few of us sat down in government and looked into diversity, and people in some regions that had an affiliation with the mountain pine beetle coalitions.”

The rural advisory council has emerged out of the work of the pine beetle coalitions, Barnett said.

“Tom Hoffman is a Registered Professional Forester and a board member of Community Futures Cariboo-Chilcotin and the Northern Development Initiative Trust,” Barnett said.

“He’s also an alternate with the Cariboo Chilcotin Beetle Action Committee.”

The closest community to Williams Lake represented on the council is Cache Creek, with member Debra Arnot, who is the general manager of Community Futures Sun Country

and for the past nine years, has co-owned and operated a logging company with her husband.

“There are promising economic opportunities on the horizon for B.C. and we want to ensure that small and rural communities share fully in the benefits,” Thomson said in a press release.

Barnett said she is hopeful the council will advise government on initiatives and policies that will make rural B.C. a better and easier place to live.

“We’ll be looking at ways to generate economics. In many of our little communities, because of the pine beetle we have lost a

lot of jobs.”

The council will also look at new initiatives to bring forward to government.

Barnett said for rural B.C. the council probably has the biggest scope of any group advising government.

The first meeting of the council is scheduled to take place in Victoria, March 26 at the legislature and on the 27th at one of the government agency’s buildings.

“It’s very exciting,” Barnett said. “I haven’t met most of these people in person. I have had discussions with them on the phone, but that’s about it.”

Wheelchair taxi a must, committee says Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer Williams Lake needs a bylaw to ensure the city has a wheelchair accessible taxi, Accessibility Advisory Committee chair George Atamanenko told city council during its regular meeting Tuesday.

“This has been ongoing for over three years,” Atamanenko said of the push for the taxi.

The committee has spoken with the new owner of Town Taxi who presently lives in Golden, conducted surveys and talked with taxi drivers about the need.

“We’ve almost exhausted the point,” he said. “We would like a bylaw in place saying that there be at least one accessible taxi within the fleet. It can be done, other communities have had it done.”

Coun. Laurie Walters thanked the committee for its work and said a taxi bylaw is important.

“I would encourage council to get that moving,” Walters said. “I can appreciate a grandfather clause for existing

businesses, but we really need to take action.”

According to Stacy Miranda, the city’s new manager of active living, wheelchair accessible cabs are moving forward in cities a lot faster than people might think.

“We did a report with some recommendations and it sits with the governance committee right now,” Miranda said. “I don’t know if they’ve reviewed the document.

It’s not something that you just wake up tomorrow and create a bylaw.

There’s a lot of research that will go into it for our own community.”

Coun. Scott Nelson said it should be mandated that if there’s a taxi service in the community it has to be wheelchair accessible.

Responding Miranda suggested the only way change will happen is if a bylaw is put in place.

Recently in Vancouver Mayor Walt Cobb was told by one taxi company that all of its cabs are wheelchair accessible, he said.

Atamanenko also requested the city provide free transit the

first Saturday in June to celebrate accessibility awareness day, which is marked across the province.

“It would provide continuous education about accessibility and that everyone with any form of disability is part of our community,” he said.

Building on the legacy of Rick Hansen, the committee continues to push for ways to make the city more accessible and in 2014, four sets of accessible doors were installed at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex.

The Gibraltar Room has been equipped with automatic door openers for easy access to members with strollers, wheelchairs or related mobility challenges.

Three other entry points in the complex that were retrofitted with automatic door openers include Rink One, Rink Two and the Fitness Centre.

“It shows the community that we care as an institution at least,” Atamanenko said.

Coun. Sue Zacharias told council the Williams Lake Construction Association, in partnership with Thompson Rivers University’s residential construction program, will build another home in 2016.

“This fall we’ll be looking at a lot and a plan before the course starts in February, so I would appreciate if you would send me information about visitable housing,” Zacharias told Atamanenko. “We can keep that in our view as we’re looking at our design.”

Williams Lake could be a leader in accessible communities in the province, Atamanenko said, but it needs a strong mission from council.

Coun. Ivan Bonnell has replaced Surinderpal Rathor as the council rep on the committee, which meets the first Tuesday of the month and is open to the public.

Many people were told they had a penicillin allergy when they were young.

However, in 2012, the Mayo Clinic did a study of 384 patients about to have surgery. They were given a skin test which is a safe way of determining an allergy.

Of the 384 patient, 94% tested negatively for a penicillin allergy. These results gave physicians a greater (and often less expensive) range of antibiotics if they were needed postsurgery. This allergy may be something to have checked.

Gaeil Farrar Staff Writer Rotary International’s primary goal today is to eradicate polio in the world.

Rotary has been spearheading that campaign since 1988 and is now “this close” to achieving its goal, says Williams Lake Daybreak Rotary president-elect Lori Macala placing her thumb and forefinger about a quarter of an inch apart.

Macala learned more about progress being made on the Rotary International’s Polio Plus campaign while attending the Pacific Northwest President Elect Training Seminar in Seattle this month.

Ramesh Ferris a Rotarian from the Yukon and a polio survivor was among the speakers. Ferris lost the use of his legs after contracting polio as a young child in India. He was adopted by a family in the Yukon who was able to fit him with braces and a cane so that he could walk again.

When the Polio Plus campaign began in 1988 Macala says there were more than 350,000 cases of polio in more than 125 countries.

“Now we are down to three countries where polio is still endemic, Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan,” Macala says.

In 2013 there were about 416 recorded cases of polio in those three countries.

She notes war and strife in those countries have prevented the vaccine from reaching many people who fear the vaccine is an attempt by opposing forces to poison their children.

The Polio Plus campaign ends in 2018 and by then Macala says Rotary hopes to see an end to polio around the globe. Nigeria hasn’t had a case of polio since last July.

If the country is polio free for a year the campaign in that country can be considered a success, Macala says.

The Polio Plus campaign is a joint project of Rotary International, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

For every dollar donated to Polio Plus, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donates $2.

Rotarians around the globe help raise funds for the cause and in distributing the vaccine which is given to babies and children ages five years and younger, Macala says. All it takes is two drops of the vaccine by mouth to prevent the disabling and potentially deadly disease.

Affectionately known as Daybreak Rotary’s Queen of Sparkle, Macala found a shiny tiara to wear for the president elect seminar that was held at the Doubletree Seattle Airport Hotel for the 21st year March 5 to 8.

Macala attended the training seminar with 700 Rotarian president elects, district governors, past district governors, assistant governors, trainers, and speakers from the nine Pacific North West Rotary Districts in Alaska, B.C., Washington, Idaho, Oregon and part of California.

Macala says all of the delegates attended six plenary dinner sessions with guest speakers and broke into groups according to club size to discuss topics including encouraging membership, enhancing public image, and the Rotary Foundation.

Among the plenary speakers was the past Rotary International president Richard King, who also talked about the Polio Plus campaign.

“He made us laugh and laugh, and cry,” Macala says.

The Rotary International president elect K.R. (Ravi) Ravindran, talked about the theme he has chosen for his service year — Be a Gift to the World — in yourself, your actions and in your service.

President elects will serve for a year from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016.

Macala, who has been a Rotarian for five years and served as the Daybreak Rotary president in 2012/13, says her goals for 2015/16 are to get the club Facebook page up and running; hold a fundraising event for the Polio Plus campaign; add two more members to the club which now has 17 members; and carry on with current projects.

Donation puts pizza on soup kitchen menu Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer The Salvation Army food bank is serving pizza now and then thanks to a donation from Domino’s Pizza in Williams Lake.

On Friday, food bank co-ordinator Sabrina Silvey accepted a dozen large pizzas from Domino’s general manager Francis David for lunch at the soup kitchen.

David, who has been manager of the Williams Lake pizza outlet since April 1, 2013, said he plans to donate the pizzas once a month.

“My boss resides in Surrey, but he’s given me full reins to do

this,” David smiled as he stacked the pizzas on the counter in the Salvation Army Hall where breakfast and lunch is served Monday to Friday.

As the lineup of people waiting for lunch grew all the way back to the entrance, David agreed to stay behind to help Silvey and soup kitchen helper Tracy Mycock serve the pizzas, alongside soup and buns.

“This is so great,” Silvey told David, to which he replied, “no problem.”

Silvey said the Salvation Army is serving about 1,500 meals a month or 75 a day.

Regulating e-cigs obvious Last week, the province announced legislation to regulate the sale and use of electronic cigarettes and associated products.

Anyone who was paying attention saw the changes coming down the pipe, but do they go too far?

Do they go far enough?

There has been a steep and swift uptake in the use of these products over the past few years, and for good reason. The science about the harms of smoking is in, and many use these newly-regulated products (colloquially called “vapes”) as a smoking cessation tool, which is likely the main cause of their increased use.

Whatever the reasons, however, the government is right that we need protection from products and actions that are possibly harmful to our health.

It wasn’t that long ago, after all, that people openly smoked in the corridors of the mall, and restaurant patrons were asked “smoking or non?” before being seated. That would be unthinkable these days, because we know the harm caused by second-hand smoke.

It would be nice to see the science the province has used to back the creation of these regulations, however, so we could better understand the decisions they’re making.

Better yet, government itself could have some research conducted on this matter.

After all, one of the best ways to “protect youth from the unknown effects of e-cigarette vapour and becoming addicted to nicotine,” (the goal of the regulations according to the announcement from the Ministry of Health) is to get rid of the word “unknown” in that sentence.

But this is a relatively new phenomenon and it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to our collective health, at least in terms of things we voluntarily do to ourselves. We’re better to pre-emptively regulate something that could prove harmful in the long run than we are to “wait and see,” only to find the damage has already been done. Painter Bobbie Crane of Lac La Hache was among the artists exhibiting their work at the Chances Signal Point art show held in the events room last Thursday and Friday evening.

Crane will be exhibiting her work in the Williams Lake Art Walk this summer and at the Parkside Art Gallery in 100 Mile House in June. Crane also teaches painting classes in Williams Lake. Monthly art shows are planned for the event centre this spring. Signal Point and the Women’s Contact Society are also gearing up to hold a murder mystery dinner, titled Murder in Sin City on Saturday, April 25. Age not a factor in bringing positive change When Walt Cobb was campaigning for Mayor last November I heard comments saying he’s too old, his time has gone by politically and he should be retired.

Why would his age be a question, or was that something conjured by the mayoralty opponents?

Walt was sworn in as the oldest mayor to win an election in Williams Lake.

The oldest serving mayor in Canada was 93-year-old Hazel McCallion of Mississauga, Ont., who retired last November.

through being a community volunteer, a business owner along with councillor and mayor for the city. He also served a term as Cariboo Chilcotin MLA. Along with being a husband

and father it all amounts to a lot of experience.

You get some pretty interesting experiences just knocking on all of the doors he has done while campaigning and his time in Victoria as MLA. I know how difficult it is on many days just to keep up with him and he certainly is not afraid to put in long hours to get the job done.

Those who were suggesting Walt was over the hill and was too ancient to be the head dude running our city should know now, in three short months, this life experienced individual and his council are bringing smarts and strong leadership for the

city of Williams Lake.

This might sound like a commercial for Walt Cobb, but it is intended, however, to point out that older people with a lot of life experiences can still make a difference.

Donna Barnett, our MLA, is close to Walt’s age and her knowledge and skills have made her an excellent representative on the provincial stage.

Donna is a very hard worker and I’ll wager many folk would have a difficult time keeping up with this lady. Also, there are not many places in the legislature to have a nap.

Tricky Dickie, Dick Harris, our federal member of Parlia-

ment, is not exactly a youngster and his life experiences have helped some conservative ideas come through.

The next time someone says to you age may be a hindrance in accomplishing some things, tell them to open their eyes to the experiences these ‘older folk’ have had to guide them over the years.

By the way: no one ever had the jam to tell former Williams Lake city councillor Hazel Huckvale she was too old to be on council and do other things, like driving.

Seniors’ advocate strikes a chord B.C.’s new seniors’ advocate has issued her second report, and the media mostly ignored it.

When this new office was promised by a campaigning Premier Christy Clark two years ago, I suggested that B.C. already has 85 seniors’ advocates.

They’re called MLAs, and inquiries go to their local offices.

Much to the chagrin of the opposition, Seniors’ Advocate Isobel Mackenzie’s mandate is not to pursue individual cases, and so she won’t be serving up a fresh assortment of horror stories to embarrass the government.

Instead, it is to look for “systemic challenges” and recommend ways to deal with them.

The latest report is based on a survey of more than 500 seniors from around the province, and the key finding was not what she expected.

“We were surprised to learn of the lack of awareness among seniors, particularly low-income seniors, of government programs and the subsidies available to assist them,” Mackenzie said.

The survey found that 60 per cent of seniors living on $30,000 or less annual income didn’t know they are eligible for discounts on Medical Services Plan premiums. For income less than $22,000, the entire $864 cost of individual MSP premiums is waived.

Other frequently overlooked programs are a monthly rent subsidy called Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER), grants for disability modifications called Home Adaptations

for Independence, drug cost assistance called Fair Pharmacare, property tax deferment and the federal Guaranteed Income Supplement program.

Those older than 75 with income of less than $30,000 reported the lowest awareness of assistance designed specifically for them.

But you don’t get these benefits unless you apply and show that your income qualifies.

The survey also found that the biggest fear of low-income seniors is that they won’t be able to afford to stay in their homes.

Awareness and usage of the SAFER program was lowest in the north and highest in urban areas, perhaps not surprising since the B.C. government exists more in theory than in fact in many remote places.

So what should the government do about this? Well, it could advertise these programs.

The government does lots of advertising, but not about old news like the SAFER program,

which dates back to the 1970s.

Clark’s government did a whack of advertising in the election year, 2013.

Much of it was about the B.C. Jobs Plan, heavy on the hardhats and blueprint-style graphics and arc welding and stuff like that.

Then last year the government’s big ad campaign was around the teachers’ strike, and the payments to parents to help with child care while teachers demanded twice as big a raise as all the other unions.

Fassbender is still bragging about the response rate for $40-a-day parental strike pay, which was snapped up by almost 100 per cent of eligible parents. This demonstrates that the government can indeed give away money with great efficiency, just by telling people how to get it.

The NDP’s version of seniors’ advocacy is to find the most tragic problems from complaints coming into constituency offices, and use those to ambush the government.

A popular choice is an elderly

couple who have to be separated because their medical needs are too different to keep them in the same facility.

TV news loves that one. People cry on camera and denounce politicians for being heartless, as if the health minister stayed up late plotting how to break their granny’s heart.

Maybe this seniors’ advocate wasn’t such a bad idea after all.

B.C. should take lead in use of residual logging biomass A recent (2014) and very detailed report provides the current status of forest biomass policy in Canada.

According to the authors, B.C.’s harvest in 2009 was about 48 million cubic metres and covered an area of 122,620 hectares.

It was estimated that we had the largest volume of roadside harvest residuals (tops, branches and cull logs) in Canada — 13.7 million bone dry tons (bone dry means zero per cent moisture content).

This is almost half of the Canadian total and double that of Quebec with the second greatest amount.

The potential exists for B.C. to provide 50 per cent of its current fossil fuel needs from existing biomass resources associated with forestry, agriculture and

Forest residues from existing sustainable forest industry are estimated to be enough to contribute to almost 21 per cent of the province’s fossil energy demand (12 Mt dry/yr).

This figure was arrived at by assuming that 30 per cent of the forest harvest would be residual and 70 per cent of that could be removed.

Unfortunately, most of the residual material is now burned at the roadsides to mitigate wildfire

hazards.

Existing technologies could convert this material into alternate energy forms like wood pellets, bio-fuels, industrial heating or electricity.

Residue and dead trees from the mountain pine beetle outbreak are estimated to be able to contribute an extra 11 Mt dry/ yr until 2026 which would be enough to provide 19 per cent of the provinces energy needs.

At present there is no specific forest biomass harvesting policy in place to regulate operations.

If forest companies have a cutting permit they have the rights to all woody biomass on their blocks and may remove and harvest any material they wish within the requirements of retention of coarse wood debris (CWD) under the Forest and Range

Practices Act which are minimal.

No specific licence or agreement for biomass harvesting is required.

The Forest Act now includes two timber tenures that have the purpose of accessing road and landing waste that will not be utilized by the person who conducted the original harvest.

These two fibre recovery tenures are the “Fibre Supply Licence to Cut and the Fibre Forestry Licences to Cut.” Once harvesting is completed on a specific block the primary harvester is required to provide notice whether or not the waste remaining on the block will be utilized.

If not the rights to the fibre may be allocated to the holder of one of the new fibre tenures.

As discussed in previous ar-

ticles, the main long term focus should be on the future technologies and value added jobs associated with any industry (pulp and paper, sawmilling, wood fibre production etc.)

The large amount of biomass gives B.C. the opportunity to develop new industries and technologies that are now being developed elsewhere.

Arts council launches logo contests The Community Arts Council of Williams Lake is inspired to break-out of its shell and emerge with a new energy and look.

Motivated to rebrand, revitalize and renew its image the group is hosting two logo contests, one for children’s events and the other to replace the existing main logo.

“In an age when sharing artistic works has become as easy as a ‘click of the mouse,’ we of the CACWL are reaching out to those who may wish to become more involved in the arts,” says council president Marg Evans The competition launches on March 23.

She says the arts council is proud to sponsor youth arts events in the community, such as Art in the Park, Art Camp, and youth sponsorships in schools and at Performances in the Park.

Entrants are asked to re-imagine and rebrand the CACWL logo, and bring the organization into the current era with colour and • • • • • •

Winners and honourable mentions will be announced through the local media and the council’s online presence.

There is a $100 cash prize for the main logo and a $50 prize for the youth events logo.

People’s choice awards will also be celebrated.

Although the current logo holds some history, the CACWL is hopeful that the new logo will capture the essence of the organization and its mandate, Evans says.

The Community Arts Council is now host to 15 member groups, and many individual members, supporting a broad diversity of arts in the council’s operations.

The current logo is a symbol of the one organization branching into and supporting the member groups, a key role in the council’s mandate. Evans says the board hopes the theme of support, creativity and diversity will also be represented in the new logos.

branding initiative, the CACWL is expanding on other successful projects this year, such as Art-Bombing the downtown; expanding Culture Days, Canada’s nationwide weekend arts celebration; supporting the Earth-Friendly Holiday Event; and expanding the ground mural in Boitanio Park for Aboriginal Day celebrations.

“We are undertaking a fact-finding survey of our user groups and the public, to help us direct the programs of the future,” Evans says.

“The arts scene is bustling and the CACWL is proud to be an active part. I’ve found that winters and break up in the Cariboo-Chilcotin go by much easier when there is some project I am working on, or an event I am collaborating with other artists on to help ‘colour our communities.’

It’s about lightening the heart through art and the creative process.”

The British Columbia Conservation Foundation (BCCF), under contract to the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, advises that commencing in December lake aerators will be in operation on: • Irish Lake • Skulow Lake • Simon Lake The purpose of the lake aeration program is to minimize fish mortality associated with reduced oxygen levels during the winter months on lakes at high risk. During periods of operation, the aerator units will create areas of open water and weak ice. The BCCF would like to remind residents to stay away from safety fencing placed around the aerators. Studio Theatre celebrates 60th low rewrote this adaption in 2005.

In January the 60th anniversary season continued with the comedic farce Die Theatrically by Mat Kelly.

Director Mark Berezan presented this farce in which detectives Jane and Tom investigate a murder at a community theatre’s all female production of Macbeth the Musical.

But is it murder? Or a double murder? Or a murder suicide?

Many plays have crossed our stage, which is now at our Glendale location, where we have been for 26 years thanks to School District 27.

We are currently committed to performing three to five shows per year.

Our 60th anniversary season line up started out in November with The 39 Steps by Patrick Barlow, directed by long-time member Curt Sprickerhoff and was performed in dinner theatre at The Point

Restaurant.

John Buchan (18751940), wrote the novel The Thirty-Nine Steps.

He was a public servant and politician who ended up as Governor General of Canada from 1935 to 1940, and was also an historian and novelist.

“The Thirty-Nine Steps, published in 1915, was the first of five books that featured the character Richard Hannay, “an all-action

hero with a stiff upper lip and a miraculous knack for getting himself out of sticky situations.”

What really made The Thirty-Nine Steps famous, however, is that in 1935 it was adapted as a movie by Alfred Hitchcock.

Many fires occur in spring and early summer when human activity increases. Grass burning and spring cleanup fires occasionally escape control and result in wildfires. When summer arrives, the number of people in the woods increases and as they travel, recreationalists can accidentally cause fires.

Grass fires are a major concern. Grass fires that get out of control can cause serious damage. People must remember to place a firebreak around the perimetre of the fire area. Fires can escape easily if a wind picks up. Fires that get away can quickly engulf fences, power poles and buildings and can also spread to neighbouring property or forested areas.

The Williams Lake Studio Theatre (WLST) is celebrating its 60th anniversary of bringing live theatre to our community.

We are celebrating the passion and commitment of our many volunteers, our sponsors, and the audiences who have come out to cheer us on.

As part of our 60th anniversary celebrations, the club is honouring Gwen Pharis Ringwood.

Sixty years ago, Ringwood founded our group, shortly after she and her family moved to Williams Lake in 1953.

Her husband Barney established a medical practice here.

Gwen was already an award-winning playwright and “community theatre activist.”

In March 1955, she gathered a troop together to perform two short plays, Dark Brown and Orange Blossoms, the details of which are lost in the mists of time.

Performances happened sporadically over the next few years, or at least our records of them are sporadic, but the Williams Lake Players Club was born.

In the 1980s we

are presenting two Ringwood’s plays, Still Stands the House and Garage Sale March 11 to 14 and March 18 to 21 at 8 p.m. each evening, with a matinee on March 21 at 2 p.m.

Gwen was raised on the Prairies, in Alberta, and captured the flavour of frontier life there early in her playwriting career, notably in Still Stands The House (1938).

Finally we present Proof by David Auburn, directed by Sheryl-Lynn Lewis.

In this play Catherine doubts her sanity and negotiates with a young math professor

who is overly zealous about her father’s work.

She is also expecting the arrival of her busy-body older sister.

Proof explores the unknowability of love and the mystery of genius.

This play will be on stage May 6-9 and May 13-16.

Theatre is fun, entertaining, challenging, and a great way to get involved in the

Johnny Junior Why is it that after Jesus died on the cross, he kept the marks of the nails in his hands in his Resurrected and Glorified Body? “Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. (Gospel of John 20) So why does He keep the marks? Is Jesus trying to make the point of reminding us what our sins did to him on the cross?

Perhaps a little story may help us see why the mark of the nails remained on his resurrected and glorified body.

Heirloom rocker at home on stage Gaeil Farrar Staff Writer Community theatre, as its name suggests, involves a lot of collaboration and personal touches contributed by actors and back stage crews alike.

The late Gwen Pharis Ringwood’s play Still Stands the House which started its twoweek run Wednesday evening along with her play Garage Sale is a perfect example of that collaboration.

The rocker in which Sharon Hoffman sits to knit in her role as Hester comes from her own home and is a family heirloom.

Her grandmother, who was born in 1898, was nursed on the rocker by her great-grandmother.

And Sharon remembers playing on the same rocker at age four or five with her buddy from next door.

They were playing so enthusiastically that the chair bucked the pair off. She remembers that they were hurt, but nothing too serious.

“The chair was kind of creaky, but Toni Savile (who plays Manning) repaired it for the play,” Hoffman says.

Other beautiful antique pieces on the Still Stands the House set have also been loaned to the club for the production.

“I am really enjoying the job Cathie is doing with the play,” says Hoffman.

During one rehearsal I attended she was curious as to whether her image in

the final scene was being projected properly.

Oh, yes it was, but we won’t spoil the ending for people who haven’t seen the play yet.

Researcher presents Mount Polley findings Research findings on the Mount Polley Mine tailings pond breach last summer will be the topic of a free talk coming up March 17 at the Scout Island Nature Centre.

The talk starts at 7 p.m. when Sam Albers, the University of Northern B.C’s Quesnel River Research Centre manager, will summarize research the centre has been engaged in since the Mount Polley Mine tailings impoundment ruptured on Aug. 4, 2014 discharging approximately 25 million cubic metres of tailings and waste-waters to downstream surface waters.

60th Anniversary

Born in 1910, in Anatone, Washington, Gwendolyn Margaret Pharis was the eldest child and only daughter of Lesley B. Pharis and his wife Marie Bowersock. They moved back and forth across the border between The United States and Canada several times before settling on a farm on the Saint Mary’s River in Southern Alberta where her parent’s farmed and taught school. Her father enjoyed producing plays and entertainments for the farm community. Gwen developed an appetite for the great literature of the world.

Gwen Pharis was a published playwright before she married Dr. John Brian Ringwood in 1939 on the family farm by the Saint Mary’s River in Alberta. She had graduated from The University of Alberta and received a Rockerfeller Scholarship to do her Masters in Theatre at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She returned to Alberta and Worked in the Theatre Department at U of A until she moved with her husband to the North Shore of Lake Athebasca to live in what is now Uranium City. Then Dr. Ringwood joined the Army and served overseas with The Canadian Medical Corp until 1945. Upon his return the Ringwoods lived and worked in Alberta until Dr. Hugh Atwood asked Dr. Ringwood to join him in Medical Practice in Williams Lake. They moved with their four children to Williams Lake in the early 1950s and made it their permanent home. Not long after her arrival in Williams Lake Gwen joined with other people (and there were many) who enjoyed cultural pursuits such as Art, Music and Theatre. She wrote, directed, produced, taught and participated in workshops that continually brought people of many talents together. Before her death in 1984, The Collected Plays of Gwen Pharis Ringwood was published.

When looking through the Collected Plays and other publications that featured her plays and stories, I was, once again reminded of my Mother’s passionate interest in the world and in the people with whom she connected. One of the young people she mentored was Michael Rawluk who plays Rueben in Garage Sale. I found reference to a visit to their Chimney Lake home made by a young Michael Rawluk on a summer afternoon in 1974 as one of many little notations made by my father in his journal recording the details of their daily lives. I know that Michael appeared in a play of my Mother’s in the early 70s (The Deep Has Many Voices) which she produced in the outdoor theatre that was named for her.

Gwen never tired of her involvement with the theatre and with young people she mentored and inspired. They in turn inspired her to keep up with a changing world. To this day The Williams Lake Studio Theatre Society involves children and grandchildren of people Gwen enjoyed working with in so many varied ways. I know she would feel deeply moved by being remembered in this way for this Anniversary Year.

On Behalf of the Board of Directors and Staff of Theatre BC, I would like to congratulate Williams Lake Studio Theatre (WLST) on their 60th Anniversary of producing exceptional community theatre!

In 1955 community and education theatre pioneer Gwen Pharis Ringwood founded the company and produced its first two short plays “Dark Brown”and “Orange Blossoms”. As part of WLST’s 60th Season you will be treated to two performances written by this award-winning playwright. “Still Stands the House” (1938) is her one-act folk tragedy and is the story of a family coming apart. “Garage Sale” (1981) is one of her final plays and focuses on the anxieties about getting older and finding your way. These plays run March 11-14 and March 18-21, 2015.

In 2012, Theatre BC further honoured Gwen when it named its BC Playwriting Competition Awards after her. These awards

are given out annually in three categories; Full Length, One Act and Special Merit.

Williams Lake Studio Theatre has been an active member of Theatre BC since 1973, and has an impressive list of awards earned at Theatre BC’s Annual Provincial Theatre Festival “Destination Mainstage” now in its 83rd year. In 2014 their play, Sense and Sensibility took home 3 awards for Best Costumes, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Novice Actor.

It is the dedication and commitment of its volunteers and its service to the community that sets Williams Lake Studio Theatre well on its path for another 60 years. BRAVO! Sincerely, Glen Miller President, Theatre BC

Over those 60 years this group has consistently amazed us, entertained us, moved us, and educated us. We have been treated to world class theatre, the kind seen on stages in Toronto, New York, and London, done right here by our friends and neighbours.

These wonderful volunteers do this for us, the audience, not for money or prestige but for the sheer love of putting on shows. And the Williams Lake Studio Theatre has been so blessed with an extremely supportive and appreciative community to perform their shows for.

This interaction between audience and performer is where the true magic of theatre lies and it is not every community that is fortunate enough to experience this.

As well as being committed to producing

theatre in their community, the Studio Theatre also has been a backbone of the Central Interior Zone of Theatre BC for many years, hosting workshops and festivals and honing their craft at Mainstages.

I have been privileged to have watched and befriended this group for almost 25 of those 60 years and I can say with certainty that if I want to learn how to make a skull or sew a period costume or sing in a hit musical or do brave, funny, amazing theatre that matters – I know where to turn. Here’s to you, Williams Lake Studio Theatre, thanks for 60 great years and I am looking forward to the next 60!

The Williams Lake RCMP is requesting the public’s assistance with the investigation of a historic arson to a home on Moon Avenue.

The arsons occurred twice over a period of two hours in the early morning hours of January 24, 2014. On both occasions Molotov Cocktails were thrown at the residence. It was very fortunate the resulting fires were quickly contained by the homeowner. The RCMP have information that a suspect was observed running away from the scene and was last seen getting into a dark coloured vehicle on Midnight Drive. The Williams Lake RCMP would like the public’s help in identifying the person responsible. The motive for the attack is not known at this time. Stewart, Vikes, win national sevens title Teams up with Rustlers Fraser and Wyatt in 17-12 win over UBC In a rematch of last year’s championship bout, the University of Victoria Vikes men’s sevens side, including Williams Lake Rustlers Nathan Stewart, Doug Fraser and Kane Wyatt, once again got the best of the UBC Thunderbirds.

The Vikes captured the National University Sevens Rugby Championship with a thrilling 17-12 win Saturday at Langford’s Westhills Stadium, the base of operations for Rugby Canada.

Victoria had been considered a top contender to start the 2015 tournament, however, UBC had just come off a big win at the USA College Sevens Tournament at the Las Vegas Sevens. Coming in, UBC held a two-point lead in the BC Rugby Union’s Canadian Direct Insurance Premier Division.

Nathan, a six-year veteran with the Vikes, alongside Rustlers Wyatt and Fraser, played a pivotal role in Victoria’s success at the tournament.

Victoria pushed aside the Calgary Dinos, the Waterloo Warriors and the Saskatchewan Huskies by wide margins on opening day, before laying a 27-0 drubbing on the McMaster Marauders, then a 34-0 blanking on the Queens Golden Gaels on semifinal day to reach the championship match.

The final, played under the evening lights at Westhills Stadium, was a tense affair. Neither team could garner an advantage until Fraser was sent off with a yellow card midway through the first half.

While strong defence held UBC off down a man, a misstep off the back of a scrum allowed the Thunderbirds to claim the first score.

With Fraser back on the pitch, quick play and sustained possession by UVIC saw Luke McLoskey suddenly break down the right wing. With 20 metres to go, McLoskey was injured with a torn hamstring, but persisted in driving through to score the Vikes’ first try.

Down 7-5 at the half, Fraser later capitalized on a short break by Luke Hammond to streak down the left wing putting Victoria into the lead. Soon after, and with UVIC down a man to another yellow card, UBC scored to even up the score at 12-12 with three minutes remaining.

With UBC holding the Vikes behind their own 20-metre line, Nathan disrupted the Thunderbirds’ attacking lineout leading to a solid Victoria possession and downfield push.

Linking with Crosby Stewart on the left sideline, Nathan took the ball to contact, tying up rattled UBC defenders. UVIC forced the ball wide when Fergus Hall fed Fraser charging hard down the right wing, before Fraser brushed off the lone Thunderbirds’ defender to score in the corner with six seconds remaining to lead the Vikes to the championship.

Chess in Williams Lake has been revived, said one of the Williams Lake Chess Club organizers, Scott Richardson. “The chess club is thriving,” Richardson said. “New players young and old are showing up weekly.” Richardson’s son, Kai, who competes internationally at tournaments, has been giving lessons at Chilcotin Road elementary, along with teaching any group that wants to learn the game. The chess club meets in the Williams Lake Library on Wednesdays at 3 p.m.

With just three swimmers at the 2015 B.C. ‘AAA’ Short Course Championships in Surrey, the Williams Lake Blue Fins still managed a top-25 team finish.

Madison Blusson, Kara Zavitz and Gracie Frost propelled the team into one of the highest placings with one of the smallest teams, said Blue Fins head coach Chad Webb of the feat.

Frost finished the 15-and-under provincials by capturing bronze medals in both the 100-metre backstroke and 200-metre backstroke.

“With two provincial medals under her belt and four final swims Gracie finished up the first half of the season with some great swimming,” Webb said.

200-metre backstroke and finished up a solid weekend with a 12thand a 16th-place provincial result.

Blusson, who qualified for the meet at the bottom of her age group, had some promising swims, Webb said.

“This assures her she will be in the top at the next provincials,” he said.

Blusson took 36th in the 200-metre breaststroke, 30th in the 100-metre breaststroke, 18th in the 50-metre breaststroke and 40th in the

100-metre butterfly.

Zavitz’ overall results were 12th in the 50-metre back,10th in the 100-metre backstroke, 16th in the 200-metre backstroke and 37th in the 100-metre freestyle.

Ashley Beauchamp followed up on those results as the lone Blue Fins’ swimmer at the 16 and over provincials immediately after.

“Ashley took off a good chunk of time in both her day-one swims taking two seconds in the 100-metre breast and placed 22nd,” Webb said. “[She then] took another three [seconds off] in the 200-metre individual medley finishing 24th.”

On day two Beauchamp swam two events well, Webb said, narrowly missing finals in a pair of races during the weekend.

Four on four tourney a hit Greg Sabatino Staff Writer Excited smiles lit up Total Ice Training Centre last Saturday and Sunday when it played host to the first ever Spring Four on Four Youth Hockey Tournament.

Teams randomly selected in introductory and novice divisions — many filled with players who were taking part in their very first tournament — squared off until champions were crowned.

In the novice final the Green Machines rallied to an 8-3 win over the Yellow Snow for the gold medal.

Green Machines head coach Clay Palmantier said his players were so excited to be playing in a tournament.

“They were so into it, telling me things on the bench about the game,” Palmantier said. “They were just a great group to coach and I was so proud of them.”

Lois leaves to mourn daughter Cathy (Rick) Hamel, granddaughter Lisa VanMantgem of San Diego, CA, grandson Joe (Lisa) Hamel of Mill Bay, BC, great grandchildren Hannah, and Chance VanMantgem, and Jack Hamel, as well as her special friends.

Lynda Joanne Wilson was born October 3, 1947 in Williams Lake and continued her life here.

Lynda was an active member of the community, volunteering for numerous organizations.

Lynda was predeceased by her parents, Clifford and Eleanor Wilson.

A memorial service and tea will be held in Lynda’s memory at 1:00 o’clock, Saturday March 14th 2015 at the Overlander Convention Centre in Williams Lake.

Weyerhaeuser supports both a large, modern sawmill and a pulpmill on the Grande Prairie site. Products delivered include both tree length and shortwood sawlogs and pulp wood. Based on our upgraded off-highway road system, log haul typically occurs 11 months per year.

Duties include: providing direct support services to crime and trauma victims and witnesses, including crisis intervention support, emotional support, information and referrals.
