No injuries in dramatic waterfront fire Melissa Smalley Staff Reporter

A popular waterfront gelato shop was destroyed in White Rock Tuesday morning when a large fire broke out in a West Beach residential/business complex.

Tall flames ripped through the building at 14901 Marine Dr., home to Gelateria Italia & Coffee Shop, displacing dozens of residents of adjacent apartment buildings for several hours just after 7 a.m. Tuesday.

By 9 a.m., the fire was nearly contained.

Residents of the apartment complex on either side of the gutted building were allowed back into their homes Tuesday afternoon, according to White Rock fire Chief Phil Lemire, who said those units sustained only heat damage to their fire walls in the blaze.

However, the gelato shop, the vacant business directly above it and the ground-floor apartment at the rear of the building – which had an occupant who was not home at the time of the fire – all sustained major damage.

Late Tuesday, excavation equipment was brought in to demolish what was left of the fire-ravaged building. Dozens of bystanders looked on in dismay as the gelateria was destroyed. i see page 4

Two council members attend session to give residents opportunity to voice concerns

First-term councillor’s forum draws ‘primal scream’ Sarah Massah Staff Reporter

It was a full house at last Saturday’s inaugural Community Conversations event hosted

by White Rock Coun. David Chesney.

More than 50 people attended the event, held at the White Rock Public Library at 10 a.m., to discuss a variety of topics.

On hand to engage with the public was Chesney and Coun. Helen Fathers, with invitations extended to the rest of council and Mayor Wayne Baldwin.

“I hope (they come next time),” Chesney told Peace Arch News. “I’ve extended a personal invitation to the mayor.”

However, Baldwin told PAN Wednesday that he “likely would not go” to one of the events hosted by Chesney.

“Really, what it is, is something for him to get his name out there,” Baldwin said, noting former White Rock mayor Catherine Ferguson had a similar arrangement called Coffee with Catherine.

Baldwin noted that council is working on an alternate forum for discussion after question period was removed from the end of council meetings last month.

“We’re working on how we can accommodate that,” Baldwin said.

Chesney had promised residents during

his campaign for councillor that he would host a monthly informal meeting for residents to discuss city issues. Once question period was removed, he emphasized the importance of having such a forum.

Overall, Chesney said, the forum was a very positive experience, with many in attendance happy to have a place to voice their concerns.

“There were a couple of people who were very frustrated, and I wouldn’t say that they turned up to bitch, but they did turn up to have a primal scream,” Chesney said. “Once we got past that, I think the meeting, generally, was very positive and it was pretty heartwarm-

ing to hear the feedback from the community.”

One topic that dominated the conversation was the changes to waste collection in the city, which the first-time councillor said he will bring up to fellow elected officials.

“We can do a bit better job of providing information to alleviate the concerns people have,” he said.

Chesney noted that those who attended promised to bring a friend to the April 4 Community Conversations event, which he aims to host at the library again – space permitting.

“We could be in Centennial Arena before you know it,” Chesney laughed.

A former White Rock councillor says she’ll never park at the South Surrey Park & Ride again, after both of her family’s vehicles were targeted by criminals on the same day.

Louise Hutchinson said her Honda CRV was stripped of parts and her husband’s Honda Civic was stolen on Feb. 21. The vehicles were not parked together, and had been driven to the lot at different times.

“It was just a very bizarre incident,” she told Peace Arch News.

“Two cars from the same family on the same night from a lot (where) you feel you have some kind of protection.”

According to TransLink’s website, the park-

and-ride lots are “safe and convenient.”

Media spokesperson Chris Bryan told PAN the South Surrey lot is patrolled regularly, and Transit Police have not recorded any spike in crime at the site. There were eight reports between Jan. 1 and Feb. 28, he said, citing seven vehicle thefts and one theft from auto.

However, there are plans to conduct a Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design analysis of the site “in the near future,” he said. That analysis will look at everything from foliage to lighting to surveillance cameras and may lead to changes.

A volunteer citizen patrol formed last month is also hoped to deter crime.

For all intents and purposes, Jennifer Hailstone’s life was taking some dark and unexpected turns.

She was grieving after losing both her job and her partner and was struggling to live without a lot of resources.

But all she wanted was her smile back.

A few years ago, Hailstone’s teeth began to chip and break. Attempts to have them fixed failed and actually caused more dental fractures. She was left with many missing and decaying teeth.

The 58-year-old didn’t have rent money, let alone the funds to fix her teeth. But her dental problems had become so pronounced, she could barely eat.

Hailstone decided to sell a valuable carving of two fish she’d bought many years ago for Jennifer Hailstone $4,500, and last month, she posted a message on Kijiji, a webbased classified-ad service.

“I am looking for a dentist who might be able to help me save my smile,” she wrote.

“It’s so bad, I can’t even chew anymore…”

She said she would donate her carving to any dentist prepared to do the work, and received an unexpected response.

“Hi I saw your ad in Kijiji, I am not a dentist, but if I were to pay for your dental work, what would you estimate the entire bill being?” the respondent wrote.

The man was prepared to donate $5,000, which he said was his typical donation.

An estimate for the work turned out to be $6,900, and Hailstone said she’d be happy just to have her upper teeth done.

However, a young man walked into Surrey Place Dental Group and placed the full amount for all Hailstone’s dental work – in cash – on the counter.

A representative from the dental group said she’d never seen such a generous act from a stranger and noted Hailstone had a “dental angel.”

Hailstone wrote to thank the man.

He responded he was delighted to help.

“Knowing I can make such a difference in someone’s life makes all this donating stuff worth it,” he wrote.

Hailstone hopes to pay the stranger’s kindness forward, so his gift keeps giving.

White Rock RCMP are cautioning people who venture into online relationships that a request for them to send money is a red flag.

Const. Shaileshni Molison said the warning was issued following a report from a local resident who lost “quite a bit of money” in just such a “romance scam.”

The victim, a woman in her 60s, came to police on Feb. 26. She told police she sent “a great sum of money” overseas.

Molison would not disclose the amount of money lost, but said the modus operandi was one police have seen before: individuals connect over the Internet and a relationship builds over a period of months. They never actually meet, and eventually, the unsuspecting victim’s goodwill is used against them to elicit funds.

“That seems to be the MO for a lot of these romance scams,” Molison said. “It’s how they connect with that individual.”

According to the Canadian AntiFraud Centre, romance scams have grown with the increased use of social media, and have resulted in millions of dollars in losses.

Warning signs to watch for include if the conversation turns to talk of a good friend or loved one who needs help, or expressing a desire to meet but not having the funds to travel.

Molison said police are working with other agencies to try and identify the culprit behind the latest incident. However, “it’s very difficult to pinpoint even who this individual is, or even pinpoint the country,” she said. “We don’t have any information on the individual except for the name he provided through these dating sites.”

Molison described the incident as “concerning.”

“We just want to warn people to be careful,” she said. “It’s a terrible situation for her, but if other people can learn from it…”

Former Masonic Lodge, dance hall i from page 1 The Marine Drive structure, built in the early 1920s, was one of few historic buildings left on White Rock’s waterfront. It was once home to the Masonic Lodge, then the popular Surf dance hall in the 1950s, later housing a grocery store, pizzeria and most recently the gelato shop – (see page 6).

On Wednesday morning, all that was left behind was a pile of rubble; the block of Marine Drive between Elm Street and Vidal Street remained closed to traffic as crews continued to clean up from the blaze.

Alarm bells began to ring around 7 a.m. Tuesday, according to resident Christy Fox, who was evacuated from her secondfloor apartment in the 14900block of Marine Drive.

“We started smelling smoke last night and didn’t know what it was,” Fox told Peace Arch News, noting she was scouring the Internet for any news of a nearby fire around 11 p.m. “It just kept getting stronger and stronger.”

By the time Fox and her two small dogs had fled her building, the building next door was engulfed in flames.

Dozens of onlookers took to the promenade Tuesday morning to catch a glimpse of the action, while several evacuated residents and their pets looked on. The nearby Boathouse Restaurant was opened for those who had

Three shootings A spate of shootings in Surrey has left two people injured in what police are describing as “targeted and linked” incidents.

On Tuesday at around 4 a.m., Surrey RCMP were advised of a male with gunshot injuries at a local hospital. The 20-year-old Surrey man was treated and later released.

At 6:45 p.m. that same day, police received a call about a male gunshot victim in the area of 127 Street and 78 Avenue. The victim – also a 20-year-old Surrey man – was treated and released from hospital.

At 11 p.m. on Tuesday, police were called to 126A Street and 78 Avenue after reports of shots fired.

Witnesses told police that four dark coloured vehicles were seen departing the area at a high rate of speed.

Surrey RCMP Serious Crime believe the incidents are targeted and linked and urge anyone with information to come forward.

There were no injuries, according to Lemire, and the investigation is still in the early stages.

Lemire confirmed that new tenants were preparing to move in to the vacant second-floor business space, and some renovation work had recently been taking place.

More than 4,000 homes and businesses in the Marine Drive area lost power just after 8 a.m. as a result of the blaze. Power to the majority of those hydro customers was restored shortly after; the remainder of homes and businesses affected were without power until 11:30 a.m., according to BC Hydro.

According to those who witnessed Tuesday’s fire, there was

much concern about how quickly flames were spreading once fire crews arrived on the scene.

Kate Pelzer, whose mother lives behind the destroyed complex, lauded the fire department for their quick work despite a frightening scene.

“It was getting really close to the condos that are right behind there – (my mom) wasn’t worried about her house as much as the condos... She knows people who live there,” Pelzer said. “My mom said they did a great job containing. She said it was pretty scary at one point because the flames were so high and it was growing really quickly, but she said they did a great job.”

A White Rock city councillor is expressing concern over approving changes to construction projects after the work had been done.

Coun. Lynne Sinclair told city staff at last week’s council meeting that recommending a public hearing for an elevated walkway to 15283 Victoria Ave. – after it had already been built – was not something she could support.

“Why are you recommending that it go to a hearing instead of it being removed?” Sinclair asked director of planning and development Karen Cooper, who presented the development variance permit at the March 2 land use and planning committee meeting.

The elevated walkway was discovered after a building inspector noticed it, Cooper explained. The developer of the home – who recently entered into a purchase agreement for it – had submitted the change in his plans but not in a list of changes given to staff.

As a result, the addition of the walkway was overlooked.

“In the original plan, the access to the building was on the other side. The elevated walkway was not on the original plan,” Cooper said. “During construction – which is common – the developer decided to make some changes to the building, he identified those changes… all of those were approved.

“He also indicated on the plan the elevated walkway. If the plan examiner had viewed the drawing, they would have advised the applicant that they needed a variance permit. But that didn’t happen.”

“There was a certain degree of ambiguity; the elevated walkway was marked on the plan, but because it wasn’t listed on the list of changes, it was not really viewed by staff,” she said.

“Clearly, he intended to provide this walkway, it was on the plan, but he didn’t have it listed for staff to review.”

However, Sinclair expressed concern with allowing the variance go to public hearing.

Addressing Cooper, Sinclair noted the bulk of development in White Rock is housing, and said allowing this change could set a precedent.

“If we allow people to break the rules and then say it’s OK… it’s a slippery slope,” she said. “We already have enough problems in this town as it is, and I’m actually really concerned.”

At least two neighbours expressed concerns at a public information meeting, with two others in favour, Cooper said.

Council voted to allow the variance permit to go to public

hearing, with Couns. David Chesney, Megan Knight and Sinclair opposed.

If it is rejected, Cooper said the result will be a “significant redesign” of the property.

A variance permit was also requested for a property located at 1152 Parker St. that had “extensive reconstruction” encroaching on the setback without city approval.

While a majority of residents at a public information meeting approved of the addition, Mayor Wayne Baldwin noted the permit would likely have been declined, had it come to the city for approval.

“It really, really, really bothers me when these projects (come to us) after the fact,” he said. “I doubt very much it would have been approved.”

While Cooper explained there would be a financial penalty, Baldwin noted the changes “enhance the value of the property.”

Council voted unanimously to schedule a public hearing on that variance permit.

Regulating e-cigarettes an obvious step

L

ast week, the province announced legislation to regulate the sale and use of electronic cigarettes and associated products.

Anyone who was paying attention saw the changes coming down the pipe, but do they go too far?

Do they go far enough?

There has been a steep and swift uptake in the use of these products over the past few years, and for good reason. The science about the harms of smoking is nothing new, and many use these newly regulated products (colloquially called “vapes”) as a smoking cessation tool, which is likely the main cause of their increased use.

Whatever the reasons, however, the government is right that we need protection from products and actions that are possibly harmful to our health.

It wasn’t that long ago, after all, that people openly smoked in the corridors of the mall, and restaurant patrons were asked “smoking or non?” before being seated. That would be unthinkable these days, because we know the harm caused by second-hand smoke.

It would be nice to see the science the province has used to back the creation of these regulations, however, so we could better understand the decisions they’re making.

Better yet, government itself could have some research conducted on this matter.

After all, one of the best ways to “protect youth from the unknown effects of e-cigarette vapour and becoming addicted to nicotine,” (the stated goal of the regulations, according to the announcement from the Ministry of Health) is to get rid of the word “unknown” in that sentence.

But this is a relatively new phenomenon and it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to our collective health, at least in terms of things we voluntarily do to ourselves.

In recent years, a number of older buildings in that area of White Rock have been demolished, as the relentless demand for new condos and homes makes the real estate they occupy more valuable than ever. Most recently, the old Pacific Stage lines bus depot and a long-standing waterfront garage have been demolished to allow a large condo development to proceed, at the corner of Oxford and Marine. It is now under construction.

The same level of redevelopment is taking place in Surrey and many other parts of the Lower Mainland.

That’s progress, and it is never possible to preserve a city that is dynamic and growing in one particular state. White Rock, as a popular visitor destination and desirable place to live, will continue to grow and change. It already looks almost completely different than it did 25 or 30 years ago.

Nonetheless, the destruction of the Surf by fire on Tuesday removes yet another reminder of White Rock’s unique heritage. It is doubtful many current White Rock residents were aware of its background, but it’s well worth remembering and thinking back to what White Rock once was.

Hopefully, all those affected by the fire will soon have their lives back in order.

On the site of the Surf, a new building will eventually arise. It will play its own role in the history of White Rock in the future.

It’s time to take a stand

Editor: Re: Leg-hold trap fears on Marine, March 5; Outrage over leg-holdtrap injuries, March 10.

Resident Frank Groff opened a file with the BCSPCA due to small critters becoming snared in traps set near Marine Drive. He was told that unless the BCSPCA were given an address of where the traps originated from they were unable to proceed.

Isn’t their mandate to investigate cruelty and protect animals? Now they want the public to hand them the perpetrators on a silver platter.

I hope the sick individuals who are doing this stop before someone who is “really important” gets hurt. The BCSPCA appears to be of no help.

But if you are just getting your jollies from inflicting pain on others, as far as this writer is concerned, you are nothing but trash.

Why, one asks, would you set traps that can not only injure birds, raccoons, rabbits, coyotes and any other wildlife living in our neighbourhood but also our family pets? What will you gain from trapping one of these animals?

How will you know if you managed to trap an animal or that your traps were discovered and confiscated? Where is the satisfaction in not knowing?

Is this retribution for wildlife causing damage to your property?

If so, have you ever considered the fact that human development destroyed and keeps removing the animal’s habitat? Where are they supposed to go? Wildlife habitat in this area is quickly being replaced by shopping malls, monster houses et al. One-hundred-year-old trees, home to nesting birds, squirrels and raccoons are razed to the ground and replaced with saplings that won’t mature for another 25 years.

You can protect your property with a few prevention tools. Check out animal-control sites like AAAWildlife.

The Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals are offering a $1,000 reward for information on finding you. You may never be caught, punished or charged, but remember, what goes around, comes around. It’s called karma, and your day will come.

Editor: I have spent many days over the past two years as a soccer dad driving my son to the South Surrey Athletic Park for practices and games.

Without question, this park has amazing state-of-the-art sports facilities that any community should be proud of, including some amazing urban park trails.

While enjoying these gems with a hike or a run on many evenings, I have also been troubled by the number of cars that were broken into in broad daylight. There wasn’t a week that went by that I didn’t see smashed windows or evidence of shattered glass on the ground.

On the weekend, my family and I became the latest victims, as our vehicle was broken into at the urban park across from the athletic park.

Maybe it was just another walk in the park – albeit an expensive one – or should the raft of incidents move

Wrong numbers Editor: Last week I received a recorded call from a lady identifying herself as Linda Hepner, mayor of Surrey, stating that I was invited to a “telephone town hall meeting.”

As a matter of principle, I do not respond to these calls.

Newspapers report that one of the mayors told the callers they were only given a choice to have a referendum by June 2015 or wait until the next municipal elections in 2018. Why did the mayors not tell

Editor: Re: ‘We’re a business, our business is charity,’ March 5.

I thought I had heard everything after the fiasco of a few whiners and complainers ending up ruining our waterfront, but apparently not.

The few have taken over again in trying to demean Jas Singh, such a noble and generous man. He donates 60 of his 70 acres, time, hard work and machinery to grow fresh food for the needy, yet is being treated worse than a criminal by some ignorant people and organizations.

I use the word ‘ignorant’ in its true sense. They have

no idea all the expenses incurred to run a farm.

As for the food banks, they often complain about not having enough yet won’t accept Singh’s donations. They are then denying the needy. How does that make sense?

Mr. Singh, if you are reading this, I am so happy you, volunteer Steve Genik, your family and all your wonderful volunteers are undeterred.

The majority of people know what a lovely caring person you are. I am sure you will meet your goals and hopefully even more. Keep up the excellent work.

Garbage dumped several weeks ago near the railroad tracks on White Rock’s West Beach is expected to be removed on Friday, according to a Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesperson.

“The only access in to this area is by rail, so we will escort people in by rail and remove the material, we expect on Friday,” Gus Melonas told Peace Arch News Tuesday.

“We are working with authorities and action will be taken against these violators. We will continue to inspect the area closely.”

The large pile of debris – including more than a dozen shopping bags full of garbage and other items – was first brought to the City of White Rock’s attention via social media by Carson Burgin.

Burgin sent a photo of the garbage to the city’s Twitter account on Feb. 16.

City staff told PAN on Feb. 18 it was co-ordinating with BNSF to have the debris removed.

Surrey/Langley group gathers twice a month to discuss, disclaim and dispute

n a Sunday morning at a local pub in Fleetwood, several people gather at a table and order breakfast: Sandwiches, veggie egg whites, an eight-ounce sirloin and something called a “cloak and dagger.”

Plus lots of gravy and extra ketchup.

Although the waitress has just walked away with their order, the mental plates are already full.

“Everything is on the table for discussion,” says Marina Sedai, a member of the Surrey/Langley Skeptics in the Pub. The year-old offshoot of the Vancouver Skeptics has 42 members in its Facebook group, and meets twice a month in Surrey to discuss, disclaim and dispute any number of topics they deem worthy of skepticism or scientific examination.

Alien abductions? Check.

Distrust of vaccines? Check. The origins of the universe? Why not.

The Skeptics are not to be confused with conspiracy theorists – 9/11 “truthers” and those who peddle myths about alien visits and “faked” moon landings.

Those are common targets of the Skeptics, as are model/ actress Jenny McCarthy and those providing unscientific and anecdotal “proof ” that measles vaccines cause autism – claims that have been debunked in many scientific studies since the 1990s.

The Skeptics follow the idea that “extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence,” a phrase made popular by the late astronomer Carl Sagan.

Jeff Vickers brings up subject of homeopathy, a pseudoscience with no measurable effect in curing diseases.

He describes homeopathic surgery as “Nurse, hand me the nothing.”

“There are so many big topics that a lot of people talk about,” says group organizer Bob Brennert. “We don’t stick to one thing, but religion does show up a lot. There’s a large overlap B E N ’S M AY TAG

The Skeptics understand that not everybody appreciates their views.

“For me, the big difference between coming to the Skeptic group and having a conversation, and being outside in the rest of the world and having a politesociety conversation is that when somebody takes a position and says ‘I have a belief,’ very often, it’s very difficult even in the most polite and neutral manner to say ‘why?’ and challenge them with respect,” explains Sedai, who was once a Jehovah’s Witness. “Offense is quickly taken from that.”

“We’re more critical of the religion than the one who believes,” adds Vickers. “That line between the religion and the believer is very difficult to walk.”

He says that any query, no matter how polite, is immediately

taken as a personal attack.

Brennert describes the Skeptics group as a safe place to talk.

“I don’t think anybody in the group would be offended by being challenged.”

Indeed, the Skeptics themselves have differences in opinions on any number of topics brought up, including the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, which a man now is trying to make a “mainstream” religion in Germany.

(Brennert’s view is that no, the satire of religion in general shouldn’t give the “Pastafarian” movement a tax-exempt status.

But he does agree that wearing a colander – or hijab – on one’s head is a freedom of choice.)

“There’s not the dislike or hatred (from skeptics) that people impose on our community,” says Sedai. “It’s a huge misconception.

“If someone were to believe in a supernatural being, they would not be excluded (from the group),” adds Brennert. “They think we’re threatening them. We would welcome them and have really great conversations.”

Brennert says he doesn’t hate religion, he just doesn’t understand it.

“I don’t understand why people believe there is a god. There are scientific fundamentals that can explain that what you believe is not true.”

He admits there’s no denying

by Vickers, who grew up in a small town in Ontario as part of the only family that didn’t go to church on Sundays.

Shopping centre serves as classroom For the Surrey School District, learning can, and should, happen outside of a traditional classroom.

Since January, the district’s Community Schools Partnership department has been running its Early Learning for Families program for preschoolage children.

School district assistant superintendent Pat Horstead said each year the school district has as many as 5,000 children registering for kindergarten but only about 10 per cent of them have attended StrongStart BC, the mainstream provincial preschool program.

“I knew there was a segment of the population we weren’t reaching,” she said.

“StrongStart is great

but my concern was for those children who were not being reached.”

The program is drop-in and focuses on parent engagement, literacy, community connections, educational resources and having fun.

Sessions are held in an open area located by the elevator outside of the Winners store at Central City on the first and third Wednesday of the month between 10 a.m. and noon.

The district delivers the program through a partnership with Simon Fraser University Surrey - TD Community Engagement Centre, Central City managers and Blackwood Partners Central City.

Fibre fest at bigger venue Melissa Smalley Staff Reporter

Crafters from around the Lower Mainland will be spinning with excitement this weekend as Cloverdale hosts Fibres West 2015, a celebration of weaving, felting, knitting, basketry, quilting and more.

More than 60 vendors and community organizations are set to gather March 13-14 at the Cloverdale Exhibition Park Agriplex building – a new, much larger venue for the festival, now in its seventh year.

The two-day festivities will include an artisan gallery, kids drop-in workshop, free demonstrations and lectures and café.

A Peninsula favourite, Celtic fiddle sensation Kierah Raymond, will return to White Rock’s Blue Frog Studios on Thursday March 19 and Friday, March 20 at 8 p.m. to perform with innovative guitarist Adam Dobres and pianist, mandolinist and accordionist Adrian Dolan.

The Irish Month-themed concert is a followup to three sell-out concerts last year at the venue, and once again it will highlight Raymond’s technical mastery and musicality in a seamless blend of her own original tunes and the traditional music of Ireland, Scotland and Cape Breton.

And she’s backed by two outstanding B.C. musicians, both of whom also work with

the Ruth Moody Band (Dobres is also noted for his work with the Dustin Bentall Band, while Dolan is also a member of The Bills), and who were her primary backup on her most recent album, Stonemason’s Daughter.

It’s going to be a busy weekend of playing for the 20-year-old, Peninsula-raised fiddler, lately returned from a two-month sojourn in the Dominican Republic.

She and her cohorts will follow the White Rock appearance with a Saturday night concert in Valemount and a Sunday concert in Prince George.

She has also started to write music for a new CD and has been putting together new sets in anticipation of a serious spate of recording in the fall. i see page 30

Robert Davidson performs with dancers at UBC festival

Haida artist takes to stage Alex Browne Arts Reporter

Renowned Haida artist and Semiahmoo Peninsula resident Robert Davidson was featured last week in a different light – as musician and dancer.

Davidson performed with the Rainbow Creek Dancers as part of the Coastal First Nations Dance Festival, which ran until Sunday at the Museum of Anthropology at UBC. Presented by the Dancers of Damelahamid in partnership with the MOA, the festival showcased both international and B.C.-based groups, including first time participants sisters Urseloria Kanuho and Nikollane Kanuho, of the Arizona Pow Wow Dancers and Calgary hoop dancer Jesse McMann Sparvier, whose work is rooted in Blackfoot and Cree traditions.

Of both Haida and Tlingit descent, Davidson, a Governor General’s award-winner, is one of Canada’s most respected and important contemporary post-modern visual artists, known for his creative and personal interpretation of Haida forms through his skill as a sculptor, as a master-carver of totem poles and masks, and also as a printmaker, painter and jeweller.

The Rainbow Creek Dancers, founded in 1980

by Davidson and his brother, Reg, a carver and printmaker, are dedicated to keeping alive the songs and dancers of their Haida ancestors – not simply as a cultural artifact but as a way to expose new generations to Haida culture and deliver messages concerning First Nations issues, including the recognition of sacred spaces and sanctified First Nations hunting customs.

In a 2013 interview, Davidson told Peace Arch News that while the group’s songs and dances are built on pieces taught to himself and his brother by their grandmother, Florence Edenshaw Davidson, they also find it exciting to create new pieces within the traditions.

Former Surrey Eagles’ goalie Andrew Hammond excels after being called up to NHL

hen Craig Anderson returned from injury Sunday evening and resumed his post as the starting goalie of the Ottawa Senators, one of the best Cinderella stories of the National Hockey League season was put on hold.

South Surrey’s Andrew Hammond, nicknamed the Hamburglar – the McDonald’s character is painted on the side of his mask – dominated the hockey headlines in the nation’s capital over the past three weeks.

Thrust into the role, albeit temporarily, when first Anderson then backup Robin Lehner were sidelined with injuries, Hammond excelled in the Ottawa net.

The former Surrey Eagles goaltender – who also won an RBC Cup after a trade to the Vernon Vipers – put up amazing numbers in an eight-game run as the Sens’ starting netminder. Hammond won seven games – the one loss came in a shootout – and posted a goals-against average of 1.43 with a save percentage of .954.

Anderson got the starts Sunday and Tuesday, despite Hammond’s near perfect run. The Senators blew a 4-0 third period lead, but prevailed 5-4 in a shootout.

With Anderson healthy, the question of who will start the lion’s share of Ottawa’s remaining games is still unanswered.

Regardless, Hammond has had an impressive run he won’t soon forget.

“You know what? If it ended, I looked back on it and I wasn’t having fun, it wouldn’t be worth it,” he told nhl.com.

“It’s something I’ve worked hard for and there’s a fine line between having fun and doing your job still, and I think I’m able to manage that right now. I’m really enjoying it though. It’s a lot of fun. The city is kind of rallying around the team right now and it’s been a blast.”

After three seasons in the BC Hockey League, including part of the 2007-’08 season with the Surrey Eagles, Hammond went on to Bowling Green State University, where he played four years.

It was at Bowling Green that he was tagged with the Hamburglar nickname (a combination of his name, his ability to steal games and the restaurant mascot).

Hammond played 111 games with the Bowling Green Falcons, winning 30 and earning the team’s Most Valuable Player honours twice.

South Surrey native Andrew Hammond has been starring in net for the Ottawa Senators since being promoted from the minors.

He signed with the Senators in the spring of 2013, after finishing his college career.

He began this season with the Binghamton Senators of the American Hockey League last October, his second with Ottawa’s top farm team.

Hammond was called up to the NHL on Jan. 28, as insurance when Anderson was sidelined with an injured hand. Lehner took over as the number-one goalie, with Hammond tasked to serve as the backup.

It wasn’t expected Hammond would see much, if any, action. His numbers in the AHL this season aren’t spectacular. A goals-against average of 3.51 and a save percentage of .898 were well below the league average.

So it wasn’t a surprise the 27-year-old, with all of 35 minutes of NHL experience behind him, took his place at the end of the Sens’ bench while Lehner started the next nine games.

They stretched their season into overtime, but weren’t able to advance to the semifinal round of the PACWEST (Pacific Western Athletic Conference) playoffs.

The Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) Eagles fell 66-58 to the Douglas College Royals in a quarterfinal playoff game last Thursday afternoon in Abbotsford, bringing their season to an end.

“I thought our team competed very well today,” said Eagles head coach Dan Nayebzadeh, who resigned his position earlier this week.

KPU trailed the Royals by just one point at the half at 30-29, then surged to a 41-37 advantage after three quarters. The Eagles held the lead until Douglas got the tying point on a free throw with just seconds left in regulation time. In overtime, the Royals used a 10-2 run to put away KPU.

Another HomeLife Realtor has been singled out for the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board’s top honour.

Rick Dubord of HomeLife Benchmark Realty received the John Armeneau Professional of the Year Award for his outstanding contribution to the real estate industry.

Samantha McPhail, in what was her final game in a KPU uniform, earned player-of-the-game honours, scoring 19 points and adding 11 rebounds.

“Sam did a great job of protecting the paint by defending Douglas’ tough post players,” said Nayebzadeh. “She blocked or changed a ton of shots, and kept us in the game with her toughness. Sam was absolutely brilliant in carrying us on her shoulders and giving us her best game of the year.”

The award recognizes outstanding leadership and dedication both professionally and within the community.

“Rick is a remarkable individual and exceptional member of this board,” past president Ray Werger said. “For four decades, he has led through innovation, hard work and a commitment to giving back, setting a true standard of professionalism and inspiring those around him.”

This is the second consecutive year that a Realtor affiliated with the White Rock office of HomeLife has been honoured with this award.

The all-electric Nissan LEAF tells white lies!

The Nissan LEAF miraculously cut a journey in half this week.

I took the plug-in sedan on a 43-kilometre trip from Vancouver to Driveway HQ, on 152nd Street, in Surrey. When I set out, the screen display showed that I could drive emission-free for 146 kilometres.

Now I could have taken off like an F1 supercar and street raced all the way. But that’s not me.

Spurred by my ecofriendly driving the previous day, the clever car had decided earlier in the day that I could do 156 kilometres on a full charge. Not boasting but that’s easily more than 20 kilometres better than the average driver can expect to achieve. Okay, maybe my head is swelling.

The big 1-4-6 winked at me. I threw the stick into ECO mode and with two flicks of the wrist pushed it into the enhanced B-mode, which puts the braking power regeneration into overdrive, so to speak.

I glided silently down the road, picking up pace ever so gradually in the busy city traffic. Rolling down the hills to Marpole, I could feel the juice from the brakes topping up that battery.

On the freeway, I hit the posted speed limit and 40 minutes later pulled into HQ. The display flashed 126. I had covered 43 klicks with the power required to move the car just 20! Such fun.

Toyota has suffered criticism in the past that must sting: some if its designs have been called boring or vanilla.

Things are changing at Toyota, just look at the much more dynamic designs placed on the small Corolla or mid-sized Camry, still practical but much better looking.

Looks One area that Lexus has focused on is the front grille and aggressive stance of many of its latest vehicles. This grille is what Lexus calls a “spindle” grille, made to replicate a fabric spindle. Why, you ask? Well, the Toyoda family was in the fabric loom business before they started making military trucks and then cars. This is a fun tip-of-the-hat to the origins of the business.

On some cars it looks a bit forced, on this RC it certainly looks well integrated and sleek. What are hard to see are two pin-lights imbedded in the grille that act as driving lights. The back has cheese-grater looking faux vents behind the rear wheels that serve no function and look a bit busy.

The FC is sold as a rear wheel drive (RWD) model or all wheel drive (AWD) plus it is sold with Lexus F Sport trim packages that enhance the wheels and add extra go-fast looking trim pieces. The car seen here is the 350 AWD without F Sport.

Inside Lexus continues the overhaul inside the RC cabin. The dash really looks and feels cockpit-like, with a high centre console and sporty looking trim. There is a new touch pad between the front seats that lets the driver scroll around the centre screen just as one would on a laptop. To enter a setting, the driver pushed the track pad, all very intuitive. The F Sport models get a special centre speedometer cluster that has the single dial move to one side for quick reference information. The non- F Sport models get a small screen to use instead. The seats are nicely sculpted and trimmed in leather, plus the back seats are roomy enough for adults if the front seats are moved slightly forward, children will fit easily. What is impressive is the use of soft-touch materials and a level of finish and that should be experienced firsthand.

Drive Most Canadians will gravitate towards the RWD RC 350 not just because of the added traction but also because of the lower starting price. It’s odd that the RWD car starts at $57,650, where the AWD starts at $54,600. The RWD F Sport car is a more performance-oriented with an 8-speed automatic transmission and adaptive front and rear suspension and all-wheel steering system; the AWD gets a 6-speed auto and a passive shock system. Both use the same 3.5L V6 engine with 307hp. The AWD car seams to be set up as a touring car, not getting away from the Lexus roots planted firmly in the luxury camp. It would be a good idea to try the more dynamic F Sport model back-to-back with the AWD to see if the softer model is to your tastes.

Albaisa designs for a stylish life “One day, I was seven or eight, I heard a rumbling and it pulled into the office,” Albaisa explains.

It would have been no great surprise if car designer Alfonso Albaisa had become a designer of stationary objects – buildings!

The Infiniti Executive Design Director fell in love with design as a young boy living in Miami, FL. As he recalls his childhood, he mentions that this wasn’t the beach part of Miami that might come to mind when we think of the city. Albaisa’s father was a building architect and so as a youngster the budding designer spent a lot of time at the office.

“I remember this as if it was yesterday, that the shadows would move on the streets and I’d sit in the entrance of my dad’s office playing with the little buildings and models.”

Then one day, sitting on the steps of his father’s office, fate changed his life’s ambitions changed. It was then that he heard and saw it for the first time.

“It was an E-Type Jag convertible. And that really changed it for me… It was just so beautiful. Because this was the early 70s. Miami wasn’t Justin Bieber going down the street in a Lamborghini. You never saw these these kinds of cars, so it was shocking for me, that a car could be so beautiful… And then I started drawing cars.”

From then on, he knew that designing vehicles would be in his future.

Born November 10, 1925 in Belfast Northern Ireland.

Passed away peacefully with his family by his side on February 20, 2015.

He is lovingly remembered by his children Robert (Judy), Richard (Karen) and Elaine (John) and his 5 grandchildren; Nikki (Clay), Sean (Amy), Travers, Caitlin (Nate) and Brendon.

The family wishes to thank the caring and compassionate attendants and nurses of the Crescent Gardens Retirement Community, but most of all his long-time companion Helen Lilley who was his constant and invaluable assistant of the last 8 years.

A Memorial Service will be held on March 21, 2015 at 10:00 am at Victory Memorial Park Funeral Centre, 14831 28th Ave, Surrey B.C. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Peace Arch Hospice on behalf of Hazel his wife who passed away in 2013.

Jane died just short of her 95th birthday after a long and eventful life. She was born in Alnwick, Northcumberland, England and immigrated to Canada during the mid 1960’s.

Jane braved and survived the London Blitz of World War II and served in the Women’s Royal Air Force (WAF) as a radar operator helping defend England against enemy bombing. She married her wartime sweetheart, Noel Jackson in a military wedding. They enjoyed many exciting adventures together.

She was recognized for bravery after the successful rescue of the sole survivor, a tail gunner of a crashed bomber. As he and her husband were pulling the injured airman from the burning plane, ammunition was ‘cooking off’ and she sustained a bullet wound to her left leg.

Her husband was a pilot and medical officer and later a surgeon and together they had an active social life with many friends. Among her many activities Jane enjoyed gardening, fishing, writing poetry, loved animals and was an avid reader. Jane will be remembered for her great sense of humour and her willingness to help people.

She was fortunate to know her seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She will be missed by her family who all loved her dearly.

A very special thanks to the caregivers at Ocean View Care Home for their kindness and compassion.
