Steel trees to help light up Roxby Plaza Alistair Waters At least they won’t have to worry about watering them.

The City of Kelowna plans to install what its calls “urban steel trees” in the new-look Roxby Plaza it plans to create in Rutland this spring.

The plaza, which currently exists on Roxby Road but is being revitalized to not only act as a new central community focal point for Rutland but also as the new entrance to what is planned to be a revitalized Rutland Centennial Hall, will cost $170,000 to fix up.

Part of the plan is to install the steel poles, in the shape of trees, that have built-in twinkling coloured LED lights that can be synchronized to provide patterns, change colour and put on light shows.

Things are going to look a little different at this year’s Rutland May Days but, according to organizers, a new location for the midway and an increased focus on families will make the 56th annual May Days another solid celebration of community.

With the City of Kelowna purchasing Centennial Park from the Rutland Park Society and work to revitalize the park expected to begin before May Days, organizers have changed amusement park companies, moved the midway out of Centennial Park and put more of a focus on local food and entertainment.

Another new addition this year is an imagination market, a free market for kids that will feature organizations like the YMCA and the Fat Cat festival providing crafts and kids entertainment free of charge.

The free kids event will “give parents a bit of a break from the money grab,” said D’Andrea.

“It is a money maker for the Rutland Park Society but we still wanted to have a place where families can go and not have to put money out.”

D’Andrea said this year’s event, with the new location for the midway and the other changes, is a transition year for Rutland May Days but added there is plenty of volunteer power to keep the event going for years.

“We want people to transition,” she said. “Because there are so many changes coming, let’s start transitioning this year. It’s been 56 years and we want people to realize that maybe it will be here for another 50 years.”

Roxby Plaza will have urban steel trees installed at the Highway 33 location this spring.

The Uptown Rutland Business Association is providing $36,000 to pay for the LED lights on the “trees.”

According to city staff, the steel trees will be the first of their kind in the city.

The plaza will also become home to the revamped Rutland community market and will also be used for cultural events. Work on the plaza is slated to be complete by mid-May and will include the removal of the Maple Leaf-shaped planter box in the plaza, replacement of paving stones and existing permanent seating, to be replaced with more modern, removable seating.

Until the plaza is ready for use, the existing Rutland Flea Market—slated to become the community market—will remain housed in the nearby Rutland Centennial Hall.

Kelowna recently bought Rutland Centennial Park from the Rutland Parks Society, for $800,000. That money will be used by the society to revamp the aging hall.

Part of the plan calls for the hall’s entrance to be reoriented from its current location on the west side of the building to the east side, facing Roxby Plaza.

Meanwhile, the city plans to start a multi-phased, multi-year project to fix up the dilapidated Rutland Centennial Park this year, budgeted to spend an initial $400,000 on park improvements this year.

After limiting the kokanee fishing season on Wood Lake to just a few weeks for the past three years, a return to health in kokanee fish stocks will allow for an increased opening for anglers this year.

Fisheries officials have increased the kokanee fishing season on Wood Lake from six weeks to a full four months, opening April 1 and closing Aug.

The increase in the opening comes after three straight years of just six weeks of kokanee angling opportunity on Wood Lake after a serious crash in the fishery in 2011 “Current data suggests that the population is recovering and these changes reflect our confidence that the kokanee population will be able to support increased angling pressure,” said Hillary

Ward, provincial fisheries stock assessment specialist for the Thompson-Okanagan region. “We are expecting anglers to be much more successful this year with the anticipated large number of fish returning to spawn.”

The latest crash in the kokanee population in Wood Lake began in 2011 when poor in-lake water quality killed off kokanee of all ages and led to dwindling returns of kokanee to spawn. In

2012 only 2,300 kokanee returned to spawn and 2013 wasn’t much better with about 2,800 spawners counted in Middle Vernon Creek, the primary spawning stream for Wood Lake kokanee.

But last year at a spawning fence on Middle Vernon Creek, 8,879 kokanee returned to spawn, still down from an average in good years of some 14,000 kokanee but enough to indicate the stocks are bouncing back.

“Our data suggests the age-0 fish from 2012 onwards are highly abundant and these fish will be available to anglers beginning this year,” said Ward. “The kokanee population has increased in abundance since 2011 as a result of favourable in-lake conditions and low angling pressure.”

According to Ward the length of the opening this year is based on estimates of sustainable harvest pressure and will be extended further when higher harvest pressure is sustainable.

The group commissioned an assessment that found by year five, a potential trail would drum up $6.5 million in economic spinoffs.

Proponents of the acquisition of the CN Rail corridor in Lake Country aren’t leaving anything to chance in advance of a referendum for the district to seek approval to borrow $2.6 million to go towards the purchase of the rail corridor between Kelowna and Coldstream.

A ‘vote yes’ campaign is gathering steam in Lake Country as a group of residents has formed a committee, is opening a bank account and an office and hiring an administrator to work towards getting the referendum passed.

“If this fails it will be the biggest travesty I can think of,” said

Reasons for the decline, said Vogt, could be simply a matter of supply and demand.

“One thing we do know is that the number of graduating high school students is starting to decline, which means a smaller number of recruits this year.”

It also means that universities are going to have to be a lot more competitive if they want to keep their coffers full.

To that end, the university recruitment team has been drumming up ideas on how to make the best of a downward trend.

“We’re trying to identify where we we will be most successful in finding students,” he said.

Early estimates on the year ahead have indicated they may have found the right tack, as Vogt said there is some upward momentum in interest.

Enrolment opens mid June and carries on until September.

Student enrolment at UBC Okanagan has been on continual upswing, breaking records for nine straight years.

That upward momentum, however, has come to an end, according to figures recorded late last year, raising a couple of eyebrows at the registrar’s office.

For the first time in a decade, the university experienced a decrease in enrolment—albeit

very slight.

For 2013-14, there were 8,388 students registered while this school year there were 8,212.

UBC Okanagan deputy registrar Fred Vogt, said that it’s not a cause for concern at this point, but it hasn’t gone unnoticed either.

“It’s a small decrease,” said Vogt, noting it was bound to happen “sooner or later.”

“We didn’t want to see a decrease…we would actually like enrolment to be a little

Alleged groper nabbed, but other victims asked to come forward An older man who allegedly didn’t keep in check his impulse to touch young women was arrested Saturday, and now police are looking for more victims.

Brian Spencer, 61, is being charged with two counts of sexual assault for allegedly entering a

Bernard Avenue store just after 6 p.m., Saturday, and tread on a young woman’s sense of safety.

Const. Kris Clark says the man rubbed against the young woman and grabbed her from behind.

“The staff member yelled at the man who left the store, before

returning briefly,” Clark said. “Through the course of the investigation, police were able to identify a suspect and located the Kelowna man at his residence.”

Although he currently faces only two charges, police believe there are similarities with two

previous reports of groping at businesses on Highway 33 mid-February and again March 5.

Spencer is five-footseven, white with a slim build and thinning grey hair.

There are currently no charges in the first two alleged assaults and

Most parents don’t let their children roar way over the speed limit when they’re learning to drive, but there’s always an exception to the rule.

The Kelowna Integrated Road Safety Unit spent a few hours in the southbound lanes on Highway 97 between Oyama and Winfield Sunday afternoon and caught a number of speed-happy drivers, including one pair that left them shaking their heads.

A vehicle sporting an L, for learner, sign was driving more than 50 km/h over the 100 km/h limit, prompting police to pull it over. When they did, they found a mother presiding over her child’s lessons, said Const. Kris Clark, noting they got a ticket and the car was impounded.

Speeds that high significantly impairs the ability to stop or navigate when trouble arises, said Clark, pointing out the problem.

In addition to the speedy family, Mounties issued eight tickets for excessive speeding with vehicles impounded, including three N, for New, drivers.

There were also two violations for other offenses, six warnings for defective vehicles— with problems like burnt out lights and problem windshields.

Last weekend was no different when the Central Okanagan Traffic Services conducted enforcement for a similar period of time Saturday morning on Dobbin Road at Hebert Road.

They issued 38 speeding tickets, one excessive speed with vehicle impound, one marijuana seizure, one 90-day immediate roadside prohibition, two vehicles with no insurance, one prohibited driver, two occupants

with no seatbelts, two disobeying traffic device tickets, nine warnings for defective vehicles and two tickets for failure to display an “N.” “As the weather gets better, we often see

speeds increase which dramatically affects the safety of all road users,” says Cpl. Joe Duncan, spokesperson for the Kelowna RCMP. “Please slow down, obey all road signs, and help us all

get to our destinations safely.”

Excessive speeding carries fines of $368 to $483 as well as a mandatory minimum seven-day vehicle impound.

Falling behind transit needs In the Lower Mainland, voters are currently being aggressively wooed from the yes and no sides with regards to a plebiscite to authorize a regional increase by .5 per cent the existing seven per cent provincial sales tax, money that would be targeted for future transit improvements.

B.C.’s largest urban area has been behind the transit eight-ball for decades, only starting in the late ‘80s and ‘90s with a rapid transit philosophy that should have been in the works 20 years earlier.

Today, it’s about catch-up, spending billions of dollars on projects that could have been spread out over a longer time period.

Recently, the Victoria Regional Transit Commission heard its 2013 request to add two cents per litre more to local fuel prices to help cover transit service expansion has been turned down by the province.

The request will be reconsidered again in 2016 but it does raise the question: Who should be paying to cover transit expansion in a given region—bus riders, gasoline buyers or just plain everyone?

In the Lower Mainland, added to the debate is the fact TransLink is able to operate without any public accountability, and has seen thousands of dollars in recent years wasted on bad hirings and other administration financial mishaps. That all stems from the decision to give back control of regional transit to Lower Mainland communities, but with no means of generating the revenue needed for future capital projects. So since then, it has fallen on the backs of transit users to help maintain the system.

And so it’s the case as well here in Kelowna, where transit riders are asked to buck up a little more to ride the bus, something that in this city is still more a sign of personal misfortune than it is positive thinking about the environment by leaving your car at home.

The fare increases outlined in today’s Capital News (page A12) were proposed to achieve a 30 per cent cost recovery for our local transit system. The optics of that do little to convince more drivers in Kelowna to use transit, as fare increases are not going to change that scenario.

A rapid transit link was almost written off from the get-go on the CN Rail corridor acquisition, despite that suggestion from some. But we need to think out of the box now for where Kelowna’s growth will be, what transit’s role will be and how do we pay for it.

Seniors’ advocate strikes a chord B.C.’s new seniors’ advocate has issued Victoria News her second report, and the media mostly ignored it.

TOM When this new FLETCHER office was promised by a campaigning Premier Christy Clark two years ago, I suggested that B.C. already has 85 seniors’ advocates. They’re called MLAs, and inquiries go to their local offices.

Much to the chagrin of the opposition, Seniors’ Advocate Isobel Mackenzie’s mandate is not to pursue individual cases, and so she won’t be serving up a fresh assortment of horror stories to embarrass the government.

Instead, it is to look for “systemic challenges” and recommend ways to deal with them. The latest report is based on a survey of more than 500 seniors from around the province, and the key finding was not what she expected.

“We were surprised to learn of the lack of awareness among seniors, particularly low-income seniors, of government programs and the subsidies available to assist them,” Mackenzie said.

The survey found that 60 per cent of seniors living on $30,000 or less annual income didn’t know they are eligible for discounts on Medical Services Plan premiums.

For income less than $22,000, the entire $864 cost of individual MSP premiums is waived.

Other frequently overlooked programs are a monthly rent subsidy called Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER), grants for disability modifications called Home Adaptations for Independence, drug cost assistance called Fair Pharmacare, property tax deferment and the federal Guaranteed Income Supplement program. Those older than 75 with income of less than $30,000 reported the lowest awareness of assistance designed specifically for them. But you don’t get these benefits unless you apply and show that your income qualifies.

Awareness and usage of the SAFER program was lowest in the north and highest in urban areas, perhaps not surprising since the B.C. government exists more in theory than in fact in many remote places.

So what should the government do about this? Well, it could advertise these programs. The government does lots of advertising, but not about old news like the SAFER program, which dates back to the 1970s.

Clark’s government did a whack of advertising in the election year, 2013. Much of it was about the B.C. Jobs Plan, heavy on the hardhats and blueprint-style graphics and arc welding and stuff like that.

Then last year the government’s big ad campaign was around the teachers’ strike, and the payments to parents to help with child care while teachers demanded twice as big a raise as all the other unions.

Education Minister Peter Fassbender is still bragging about the response rate for $40-a-day parental strike pay, which was snapped up by almost 100 per cent of eligible parents. This demonstrates that the government can indeed give away money with great efficiency, just by telling people how to get it.

The NDP’s version of seniors’ advocacy is to find the most tragic problems from complaints coming into constituency offices, and use those to ambush the government.

A popular choice is an elderly couple who have to be separated because their medical needs are too different to keep them in the same facility. TV news loves that one.

People cry on camera and denounce politicians for being heartless, as if the health minister stayed up late plotting how to break their granny’s heart.

Maybe this seniors’ advocate wasn’t such a bad idea after all.

Local business puts people before profit To the editor: There has been a video getting a lot of hits on the Internet about a hotel chain that poured water on a homeless man to discourage him from loitering near their property.

We are easily drawn to stories that highlight the wrong doings of others. Perhaps it helps us to feel better about ourselves in a neurotic sort of way.

It made me remember that I caught a Kelowna business doing something very admirable just a few months ago.

My very successful son had fallen into the clutches of a terrible addiction. He is very smart, very capable and very well socially adjusted when he is clean and sober, so he landed a job at The Mediterranean Market at Gordon and Lawrence.

After a few days of work he disappeared into the darkness of his addictions and didn’t show up for work.

After a couple of days, the manager of the

store called us up since we were listed as the emergency contacts. I explained the situation to this man, as I had done before to other businesses in other similar situations, and expected the usual response.

I certainly don’t expect a business to reach out and support such an individual but this man astonished me by saying: “You tell your son that when he comes back from his fall, he still has a job with us and we’ll be glad to do what we can to get him through this.”

I couldn’t help but challenge the manager by saying that I was very surprised and that I understood that we could not expect him to keep our son employed and that he had a business to run. I was flabbergasted to hear him say: “There’s more to life than operating a business.”

Smart to leave To lump all radiation into engineering one is fear-mongering to engineers To the editor: In his letter of Feb. 25 [also see letter to right], Dr. Ross Andersen stated, with regard to the supposed emissions of “microwave energy” of smart meters, my defense of smart meters (my letter of Feb 11: Time to Put ‘Smart Meter Paranoia to Rest’) proved I demonstrated that ignorance is bliss.

Well, given that for 16 years I was part of an engineering team designing microwave radio systems, employed by what then was western Canada’s largest telecom R&D firm, I really had to chuckle at Andersen’s absurd claim.

Several of Andersen’s comments are flat out wrong. For example, he stated that using “extremely sophisticated measuring equipment,” he measured “extremely high levels of pulsed microwave radiation.”

This is utter nonsense.

Clearly, Andersen’s “extremely sophisticated” equipment is in dire need of calibration. A typical cellphone output is up to two to three watts. By contrast, a typical smart meter transmits less than one minute per day, at a maximum power level of a mere one watt—far less than the power output of a cell phone.

Ironically, a call to Fortis today verified that in the Kelowna area, essentially none of the smart meter transmitters installed so far are turned on. Fortis is waiting until the meter installation program is completed before enabling their transmitters.

So what, exactly, was Andersen’s “sophisticated” equipment measuring?

Signal power level depends heavily on one’s distance from the transmitter. Thus, the power level of a smart meter more than a few feet away, is thousands of times lower than that of a cellphone placed against one’s head, and the average cellphone user uses his phone far longer than just one minute per day.

Yet, contrary to Dr. Andersen’s claims, years of data collected from studies of thousands of cellphone users has so far failed to find any significant connection between cellphone use and increased cancer risk. This has been

No. Nuclear or atomic radiation consists of high speed particles—parts of atoms—which can burn, damage cells, break and damage DNA. It’s extremely dangerous, as every worker in an atomic plant knows. The particles shoot through the air but can be reduced and perhaps stopped by proper shielding.

So called ‘wireless’ radiation is really a series of electromagnetic waves produced whenever electricity in a circuit changes very rapidly. There is no flow of particles through the air, but of electromagnetic waves.

Examples of this radiation are radio, radar, microwave, TV, X-ray, infrared heat, light, UV, cosmic, etc. Cellphones and now smart meters produce EM waves.

Damage to cells and DNA is also possible with high energy EM radiation, like X-rays, UV, but only at high exposure levels.

I understand smart meters do not approach dangerous levels, nor do people stand in front of them to absorb the brief pulses. People

verified by scientifically respected sources including Scientific American, and even several cancer agencies.

For proof, Google “cell phone dangers myth vs fact.” With the smart meter’s lower power output and much shorter transmission time, it is absurd to claim smart meters are a greater danger than cellphones, which themselves have been proven to be no danger at all.

I suggest that Dr. Andersen might be wise to stick with his chiropractic field of expertise, and leave engineering to engineers.

Kelowna city has approved the first hike in local transit fares in three years. Now it’s up to municipal councils in West Kelowna, Lake Country, Peachland,the regional district board and the Westbank First Nation council to agree.

At its regular Monday afternoon meeting, council was asked to support a move to standardize all single trip fares at $2.50 each, up from the current $2.25 for adults and college students and $2 for

seniors and elementary, middle school and high school students are charged now. Children under five will continue to ride for free.

In addition to hiking the single trip fare, sheets of 10 tickets will jump in cost to $22.50 from 20.25 for adults and college students, while seniors and students up to Grade 12 would see a hike of $2.25 to $20.25.

Day passes for everyone will also be standardized at $6.50 each, up from the current $6 for adults and $5.50 for seniors and students,while monthly

passes will increase by $10 for adults to $70 each, $3 for seniors to $45 each, $7 for college students to $55 each and $7 for students up to Grade 12 to $45 each.

Family Max for Students passes will jump by $17 each to $112 each, while the UPASS for university and college students would cost $70 as of September 2016, up from the current $60 if approved in a referendum of UBCO students.

City staff say the increases, the first since 2012, are needed to achieve a 27 per cent cost recovery for the

local transit system. The municipalities had said they wanted a 30 per cent cost recovery but that would have required a 29 per cent increase in fares.

The transit system in the Central Okanagan is funded by Kelowna, Lake Country, West Kelowna, Peachland,

the regional district, the Westbank First Nation and B.C. Transit, with the municipal partners’ portion reduced by revenue raised by fares.

Last year, transit cost $20 million to provide here.

Kelowna Mayor Colin Basran supported the fare increase saying he did not buy the argument that

the hikes would push more people off the bus and back into their cars.

He said while the transit system is good, it’s not perfect but to make it better more revenue is needed from the fare box.

The municipal partners discussed increasing fares last year and recommended a 16

per cent fare increase instead of the thenrecommended 29 per cent increase local transit planners said was needed to achieve the 30 per cent cost recovery.

The fare and pass increases will go into effect in September if supported by the other local governments.

SEEKING CIGARETTES

Knife wielding teenage robber sought Kelowna Mounties are looking for a teenager who cut a man for getting between him and a pack of cigarettes he was trying to steal.

The focus of the search, who Mounties say was around 17 years old, entered the 7-Eleven on Bernard Avenue around 1:15 a.m.

March 9 and demanded the clerk pass over some cigarettes.

Beyond not being old enough

to smoke, the teen also didn’t seem to be offering money, as he brandished a knife, explained Const. Kris Clark.

As the clerk weighed his options, a customer tried to intervene and got cut on his hand.

The extent to the man’s injury is unknown, but Clark said he was lucky it wasn’t worse and it’s best to not get involved with people

brandishing knives.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian male, about 5-foot-5 with a slim build. He was wearing a black hoodie and jeans.

Church’s mystery time capsule will get cracked open Kathy Michaels

The contents of a mysterious metal box discovered in the cornerstone of a Kelowna church will be revealed to the community by month’s end.

The time capsule found when St. Paul’s United Church was demolished last November will be opened March 24 at 10 a.m. before members of the St. Paul’s congregation, local United Churches, city council and a representative from the Kelowna Museum who will oversee the opening of the time capsule.

The brown metal box that’s about one foot by one foot in size was soldered shut and put behind the cornerstone of the church when it was built in 1957.

It was removed when the demolition process got underway.

“We had decided to take out the cornerstone ahead of time to have it ready for when we had our big breaking brick ceremony,” said Shawna Banman, the church’s office administrator, last December.“When they pulled the cornerstone out they found it in the back.”

The discovery was a surprise to everyone closest to the church. “Even our longest term members don’t know anything about it,” she said.

The church was demolished to make way for the Santuary project, which will rise on a 1.6. acre property that fronts on to both Lakeshore and KLO Roads.

The redevelopment will include a new worship centre for St. Paul’s with a 240-seat theatre, rooftop chapel, meeting rooms and a commercial kitchen available for rent, public space for performances by musicians and an artists’ gallery and residential living space.

Lingering questions about what happened to Aimee Parkes in the hours leading to her death could be answered this time next year.

Her then-partner, Ryan James Quigley, 35, is scheduled for a four-week trial on the charge of second degree murder, starting April 11, 2016.

Quigley was taken into police custody three days after Parkes’s body was found in the home they shared at Hiawatha Mobile Home Park April 1, 2014. He had been the subject of a police hunt, after Parkes’s body was found by police who were called to her residence.

Parkes, who was a branch assistant at a Kelowna bank, hadn’t shown up to work and concerned co-workers alerted the authorities, who eventually made the discovery.

According to the online footprint left of the couple’s time together, they had become engaged in April 2013 and were set to be married July of 2014.

With March being Embrace Aging month at UBC Okanagan, the Institute for Healthy Living and Chronic Disease Prevention, along with the faculty of health and social development and Interior Health, have teamed up to present a number of events that may help with the transition from middle age to senior citizen.

After a sluggish start in January, February saw an upward rally in housing sales across the Okanagan Mainline Real Estate Board region.

Sales were up 34 per cent compared to the same month in 2104.

“After a more than usual slowdown in January, Okanagan-Shuswap home sales rallied along with consumer confidence during February despite weaker economic conditions in Alberta. While not at the record pace seen at the close of 2014, the year has started off at a much stronger level than we saw during the first six months last year,” said Darcy Griffiths, OMREB president and a North Okanagan realtor.

“In the Central Okanagan, single family residential sales were up 68 per cent while the North Okanagan saw an 18 per cent increase over this time last year.”

Griffiths says an increase in demand and fewer homes for sale has edged the OMREB market from balanced into seller’s market conditions for some segments where demand outpaces supply.

While the selection of single family homes has been reduced with the ongoing decline in inventory and fewer new listings—especially for entry-level homes—the price of single family homes is steady and strong in most areas with modest gains seen in some locations where supply has tightened.

Prior to this season, only three teams in Canadian Hockey League history had ever compiled three consecutive 50-win seasons.

With Saturday’s 5-2 home-ice victory over the Spokane Chiefs, the Kelowna Rockets became the fourth member of a rather elite club.

The Rockets won 52 games in 2012-13, then set a franchise record last season with 57 victories.

With 50 more this season, Kelowna has won a CHLhigh 159 games in just under three years.

The only WHL teams ever to post three straight 50-win campaigns are the Kamloops Blazers (1989-92) and Edmonton Oil Kings (2011-14).

The Quebec league’s Saint John Sea Dogs also

performed the feat from 2010-2013.

“When you look at the teams that have achieved this, we’re in some pretty good company,” said Rockets president and GM Bruce Hamilton. “It’s a great accomplishment and it shows that over the years we’ve had some tremendous depth on this team.”

Hamilton said joining the elite group is a credit to the Rockets’ organization, from top to bottom.

“Our scouting has been a big part of it, but I’d say our coaches really deserve a lot of the credit for it,” said Hamilton.

“They’ve been able to get the most out of so many players who have played for us.

“We’ve had some real good players, and a lot of character people, too,” he added. “We’ve had a

lot of foot soldiers who have done the ground work and helped this happen.”

As has been proven in the past, successful regular seasons don’t necessarily translate into lengthy playoff runs.

Hamilton clearly hopes this spring is a departure from the last two.

“Certainly you want to make sure you’re still playing in May,” he said.

“The last two years have been a little frustrating, so hopefully this year will be different. You need to have a little good fortune along the way and stay healthy, so we’ll see what happens.”

After winning seven provincial titles, including the previous two in a row, there wasn’t a whole lot left to challenge the Immaculata Mustangs at the single A level of B.C. girls basketball.

Kelowna’s version of a high school basketball dynasty, the Mustangs stepped up a tier this season to AA and didn’t miss a beat.

On Saturday in Langley, Immaculata defeated Little Flower Academy 6855 to capture the school’s first ever provincial AA championship.

Senior Emma Johnson paced the Mustangs with 21 points and 17 rebounds, while Grade 11 post Nicole Hart added 15 points and 14 boards.

With just around 300 students, Immaculata was by far the smallest school at provincials.

Johnson, who was named an all-star and

the top defensive player at provincials, said the Mustangs proved again bigger isn’t necessarily better.

“We had a lot of success in single A, and we knew it would be tough make the step up,” said Johnson who will attend UBC Okanagan next season. “But a lot of hard work went into it and our goal all along this year was to win another title.

“It was pretty historical for our little school,” she added, “and it’s nice to be the first ones to get that 2A banner.”

The Mustangs faced their biggest challenge in the semifinal where they were pushed to the limit by St. Thomas More before emerging with an 82-80 victory.

Immaculata head coach Andrew Gini said Johnson, with 38 points, was the difference.

“We were down five with a couple of minutes left, and Emma just

wasn’t going to lose no matter what, she just took over,” said Gini.

“She hit six free throws in a row in the fourth quarter and helped carry us to the win. She was amazing again.”

In moving up a tier this season, one of the challenges the Mustangs faced for the first time was dealing with the sheer size and hyped-up environment inside the Langley Events Centre.

Gini was impressed with the way his team responded.

“It was definitely something the girls didn’t have any experience with, the size of the facility, all the people, the atmosphere,” he said.

“They handled it very well. “ Johnson was named the tournament’s top defensive player, while she and teammate Ashlyn Day made the first all-star team.

The gold medal on Saturday marked the

fourth straight B.C. championship for three graduating members of the Mustangs—Emma Johnson, Lindsay Lalach l i and Jaedyn Penkala.

After three straight losses by one goal, including two in overtime, the West Kelowna Warriors had little left to give in their first-round BCHL playoff series.

The Penticton Vees blanked the Warriors 7-0 Monday at the South Okanagan Events Centre to take the Interior Division semi-final series four games to one.

The Warriors won the series opener in triple overtime, then watched the Vees sweep the next four games—3-2 and 4-3 in overtime, 3-2 in Game 4, then closing the series out with a shutout in Game 5.

“I think Game 3 took a lot out of both teams, they came out of it with a win, and I don’t think we had the same kind of jump after that,” said Warriors head coach and GM Rylan Ferster.

It was a difficult season injury-wise for the Warriors, particularly between the pipes where

In addition to placing a solid sixth at the provincial tournament in Langley, the Kelowna Owls were also named the most sportsmanlike team.

It was the highest finish at the B.C. finals for an Owls team since 2006.

Hannah Friesen set the pace offensively for the Owls during the tourney with 53 points— including 20 against McMath—and 39 rebounds.

Grade 10 guard Courtney Donaldson scored 51 points over four games and earned honourable mention as a tournament all-star.

The provincials marked the official farewell for five Grade 12 players with the Owls— Hannah Friesen, Selma Kusturica, Lexi Percival, Avery Watson and Paige Briscoe, as well as team trainer Maggy Corrado.

Ranked fifth heading into the tournament, the Kelowna Owls turned out to be worthy of something even better at the B.C. junior girls’ basketball championship.

The KSS squad captured the bronze medal at provincials, defeating Victoria’s Oak Bay 52-40 in the thirdplace game Saturday afternoon in Langley.

Kelowna’s Taya Hanson was named a first-team all-star and the top defensive player.

In addition, the Owls were selected as the tourney’s most sportsmanlike team.

“This tournament was an amazing way to end a spectacular season,” said Owls coach Kim Whelpton. “The girls played their hearts out, supported each other and had a lot of fun along the way. To win

The Owls opened provincials with a 48-30 victory over Yale, with Chelsea Espenberg being named player of the game.

In the quarterfinals, KSS defeated Abbotsford’s MEI 42-35, who the Owls has lost to earlier in the year. Abby Cullen earned top player honours.

In the semifinals, the Owls fell behind early and trailed 38-8 at halftime

against No. 1 ranked Lord Tweedsmuir. KSS fought back before eventually falling 60-50.

“I think we got caught up in the production of the semi-final game in that first half,” Whelpton said. “Once we settled our nerves things started to happen more naturally on offense.”

Hanson was named the games’s top player.

In the bronze medal game vs. Oak Bay, the Owls learned from their mistakes the previous day and came out in an effective full court man to man press that put

them up 23-7 in the first quarter.

After a large second quarter game delay—due to a serious injury to an opposing player—the girls lost their momentum and struggled to get anything going offensively being held to two points for a half time score of 24-19.

In the fourth the Owls regained their earlier momentum off of tenacious defense against Oak Bay and held on for a 12 point win and the bronze medal.

Two dedicated supporters of minor football who call the Central Okanagan home will be honoured this spring at the B.C. Lions’ annual Orange Helmet Awards.

West Kelowna’s Joe Gluska will receive the Bob Ackles Lifetime Achievement Award, while Kelowna’s Kendall Gross will be recognized as the Community Coach of the Year.

Gluska, the president of B.C. Community Football, has been involved amateur football in the province for more than 50 years as a player, coach and executive.

Gluska has been president of the BCCFA since 2000 and has overseen the creation of the 9-man provincial championship. He is also one of the main

This past June, the provincial flag championship tournament in Kelowna featured more than 1,200 players on 116 teams.

Gross, meanwhile, was head coach of the Kelowna Mission Lions who went unbeaten in 2014, capping the season with the B.C. peewee division championship.

Gross has coached his

teams to three provincial titles in five years—two in tackle and one in flag.

He has served the Kelowna Minor Football Association in various capacities over the last several years, including director, treasurer, registrar and coach.

Peewee Lions’ assistant coach Dean Kennedy wrote the following about Gross in the nomination form: “Kendall’s determination to grow strong winning football

teams and a strong winning league is not just an individual goal, he wishes it for all teams in the KMFA and he’s backed that up by taking a strong stance at the board level over the years from director, to treasurer, to registrar,” Kennedy wrote. “Kendall is no slouch on the football field either and his record speaks for itself.

“He has a winning spirit that is both contagious and inspiring and he imparts that attitude on his players and fellow coaches.

He is respected in the community, a strong family man and believes in everyone and has no problem letting you know it and believing it too.”

Both Gross and Gluska will be formally honoured at the Orange Helmet Awards April 15 at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver.

Gloria was also blessed to have four great-grandsons Leif, Mason, Avery, and Nash. Gloria was born in Regina, SK on June 21, 1942. She spent her years in Regina working and raising her children then retired to the Okanagan in 2000. Gloria was a lovely person with a great sense of humour and lively spirit. She always welcomed guests with a loving hug and a delicious meal.

Being in Gloria’s presence meant lots of fun, laughter and sharing of stories.

SWANSON, LAWRENCE GUSTAV Lawrence passed away peacefully at Okanagan Hospice House on March 6, 2015 at the age of 92. He was predeceased by his wife, Vera, and his parents: Gustav and Gertrude Swanson; two brothers; a sister; three half-brothers and a half-sister.

He is survived by three children: Ellen (Stuart) Mould, Ron (Elinor) Swanson, and Gloria (Garry) Shiosaki. He had eight grandchildren: Deanne, Roni, and Laura Mould, Leif and Nikki Swanson, Brian Smith, Kayla and Carly Shiosaki as well as seven great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Lawrence was born December 16, 1922 in Elk Point, Alberta, and moved to the Okanagan with his family in 1956.

He worked for several employers, including Chapman Van Lines and Motorways Transport, from which he retired in 1988.

Economy LITTLE CREEK DRESSING

Along with moving to a new, larger facility, Little Creek Dressing is celebrating its 20th anniversary in business.

Little Creek has been creating delicious artisan dressings developed by owner Donna Denison, which complement the organic gourmet salad greens grown on their organic farm by her husband Dale Ziech.

The name Little Creek came from a small creek that runs through their property. Originally, Donna used raspberries, basil and garlic which they grew on their farm.

She purchased bottles and used a photocopy machine to reproduce labels she and others had

She then convinced a local Kelowna grocer to allow her to demo her new product and the rest is history, even though her first kitchen burnt down. Now, the company has expanded to a new production kitchen, warehouse and office location in Kelowna, 101840 McCurdy Pl., but the production remains true to the small home-made artisan batches that the company is famous for.

Jasmine Stonebridge is the company’s general manager and Donna’s son Jubi Steinhauer is involved in the business

strategy. Their twin daughters Amber and Kerisa Denison contribute to the artistic design of the company and are working on a Little Creek Lifestyles cookbook to celebrate the 20-year anniversary. Current offerings of Little Creek are the Okanagan’s Original, Spicy Strawberry, Cherry Balsamic and Okanagan Caesar.

Guess what everyone, this month my column celebrates its 17th year with the Kelowna Capital News. And, I’m still here!

Mandy Lao and her husband chef Tom Guan have opened the Basil Leaf Asian Fusion and Grill Restaurant in Kelowna’s Glenmore area, 1940 Kane Rd. of golf, Jon Kadin is working his final day on March 31. Kadin recently accepted a sales representative position with Nielsen Agencies.

by Tom Guan, who is the chef, and his wife Mandy Lao, who runs the front of house. Tom’s mother also helps in the kitchen. They are all delightful people. Their menu offers a fusion of Vietnamese, Chinese and Thai cuisine serving everything from fragrant Pho to crispy coconut prawns. The restaurant offers many vegetarian and gluten free options as Tom cooks with the finest ingredients—

fresh vegetables, quality meats and all home-made sauces and broths. On Saturdays and Sundays, Basil Leaf serves fresh Curry Laksa with your choice of chicken or tofu.

This spicy coconut-based curry soup is served with vegetables, rice noodles and a spice-boiled egg.

We sampled the spring rolls, coconut prawns, black pepper sauce stir-fry and Singapore style noodles. All were absolutely delicious and there was plenty to eat.

While we were dining, we ran into several friends and people we know who frequent the Basil Leaf. All of them spoke very highly of the quality of the food and the great service in the restaurant. A FOREST WALK

THE BEACH WALK

It was a wonderful fall day when I decided to take a walk through the forest. As I entered, I was slammed with a gorgeous scent of pine. I started to walk down the small dirt path that was littered with small sharp rocks.

I looked down the small cliff just off the path and saw a glimmering pond just down the small cliff. Now, I was shuffling down the sheer cliff to the beautiful pond. As I reached the pond, I got a fresh smell of wet leaves. I took a deep breath and enjoyed the scent as it tickled my nose. I peered into the pond and saw many small black and white fish with velvet scales and beady black eyes. I looked over the pond and saw an elegant clearing showing the bright green leaves of some oak trees. I climbed slowly, back up the sheer, rocky cliff leaving small rocks tumbling as I climbed and back onto the small path. Walking again, I noticed a small brown and grey squirrel scurry across the path leaving a swirl of dirt behind it. I stopped in the middle of the path to feel the warm breeze kiss my cheeks and make them turn bright, rosy red. I took a deep breathe to taste the sweet air of the forest. When I started to head back, I saw a baby moose standing in the shallows of the pond drinking some of the crystal, pure water. Speeding up my pace leaving a trail of dust flicked up behind me, I looked around one last time and taking in the wonderful sights and smells of the forest. As I exited the forest I thought, I will never forgot this this long nature walk.

I decided one weekend when the beach was clear to take a walk. I walked down the old stone stairs and heard the pitter patter of my bare feet. Then I stopped in the middle and sat on a cold, damp step. There was a leaf was bigger than my hand on the step sitting beside me. It was a lovely ruby red with orange specs here and there. It was a maple leaf from the old maple tree overlooking the steps.

It was the first leaf of fall. I kept walking down the stairs and when I found the bottom. I heard a crunch of the gleaming burning sand under my tanned bare feet.

I walked up to the most spectacular sight I had ever seen. The glistening turquoise waves of the ocean crashed on to the tiny flakes of golden sand. The warm whistling wind blew and I got a wift of the oceans soft salty water from even 5 feet away. In the distance, I heard a faint cheerful ice-cream truck playing Happy Birthday; it was stuck in my head. I could just taste the cold sweet chocolate ice cream in my mouth as my taste buds danced and begged. I knelt down on the sand (my legs burning as I sat) cupped my dirty hands and took a drink of the shimmering clean water (knowing it was gross). The water hated my taste buds and my taste buds hated the water.

I spat it out. I stood up and stared at the clear blue sky. There was one only cloud. It was in the middle of nowhere.

The cloud was white and fluffy almost like snow. The flaming, burning sun was lowering and warming up my cool back.

I heard seagulls in the distance as if I heard it in my head. I heard my mom’s sweet voice call me for dinner as the sky went orange and the sun went down. I will never forget that awful salt water or the graceful, peaceful walk on the calm beach..

In Mr. Sookocheff’s Kindergarten/Grade 1 class, the students have lots of fun demonstrating their learning during math centres.

The grade 1’s practice their mental math skills while playing a modified version of Snakes and Ladders. Instead of dice, they draw addition cards and use strategies such as counting on, adding one, or adding two. The Kindergartens are developing number sense by playing several learning games. In Taller Towers, they build Lego towers as they move around the game board, becoming aware of addition, height, and numeral recognition. In Addition Towers, they are building an awareness that numbers can be made of a combinations of two numbers - an important early addition skill! Swamp Monster is a game that helps our early learners compare numbers in a fun and engaging way.

HIKING IN THE CANYON

It was a beautiful sunny day when my mom kicked me out of the house to burn off some energy, so I decided to take a hike in the canyon. As I walked down the loose dirt path, I saw a giant patch of towering cherry blossom trees.

The blossoms on the thick gnarled branches were bright fuchsia and pale white. I watched as the flowers gracefully fluttered to the ground in the calm, peaceful breeze. I stood there for a minute more, before slowly giving up the wonderful sight and kept walking through the trees. My footsteps made a loud crunch in the amber sand and pebbles, and I heard the noise of a splashing, rushing river. I ran around a sharp, steep corner, and then came to a massive waterfall! The shimmering water rushed off the edge of a towering golden brown cliff, then flowed into a skinny, winding creek. Millions of glistening black, silver and blue rocks bordered the sparkling creek. I heard a sharp snap of a twig on the creek, and then a spotted chestnut and beige deer crept out from behind a tall oak tree. Following behind her was a tiny newborn fawn. The baby deer was a tan, golden colour with ghostly white spots and midnight black hooves. It had a cute little ginger tail, and the fawn’s eyes were glowing green. I looked up into the sky and saw that the sun had begun to set. The sunset was violet, light pink, amber and neon yellow all blended together, just beginning to reach the peaks of the mountains. I took a final glimpse at the deer and her fawn as they pranced away, then started to walk home. When I got back to my house, I could still hear the relaxing splash of the creek ringing in my head.

Slowly, I crawled into bed and dreamed of my beautiful, peaceful hike in the canyon.

COLOURS USING SENSORY DETAIL ANTI-BULLYING DAY Colours

By Ashton Kleidon – Grade 5 Colour cannot just be seen but it can be felt, tasted, and even heard too. Orange is warm and crackles like an open fire. It looks like a sunset and tastes somewhat fruity. It smells like a smoked Salmon and a bitter Orange peel. Green is very lumpy and sour like a fresh, juicy Kiwi. It is hairy, sludgy, and gross like a big, hairy monster, and paint had a baby. It smells like gross, wet, sludgy paint and drizzles down your wall. There is proof that colours can be more than just colours but entire orchestras of sensations and beauty.

Black book of colours

By Sammi Collins – Grade 6 These are my three favorite colours. You can see colours everywhere. I can see more than just colours. I can see a new beginning. These are the three colours that I like best.

Cyan is my first favorite colour.

It is the colour of the bluest sky in the summer. It also

reminds me of walking along a tropical beach with the salty blue water splashing up against the seashore. When you see the wave’s splash against the shore, you will see an ice cream truck with bubble gum ice cream.

Magenta is my second favorite colour. Magenta can be in multiple different shades but the most common shade is like the colour of a sunset once every few weeks. The fragrance is strong like the lavender bush in my neighbor’s yard and it tastes like the purple grapes a few blocks away. Magenta feels like the soft fluffy blanket that is sprawled out across my bed.

Green is my last but not least favorite colour. Green smells like freshly cut grass in the summer. It looks like the flower stems in my front yard.

It tastes like a freshly picked granny smiths apples, or like honeydew. Green feels like the swampy waters down the road with the algae floating up at the top of the water.

Now since you have read this I hope that you don’t just see colours. I hope that you can see, smell and feel them too.

The Black Book Of Colours

Welcome to my black book of colours. Here you will see, hear, smell, feel the colours I like. First, I will talk about is the colour peach. Peach looks like the hot sand on a sunny day, peach also smells like my peach fruit cup I eat every day. Peach tastes like a peach freshly pick from the tree, last but not least peach feels like a nice flannel blanket. The next colour I am going to talk about is the colour purple. Purple feels like a violets petals.

Purple tastes like nice round juicy grapes. Purple looks like beautiful grapes really ripe and nice. Last thing purple smells like the Advil medicine I take.

Last colour is orange. Orange looks like a big fat pumpkin in a pumpkin patch. Next orange feels like a lion’s silky, soft main. Next orange smells like a cinnamon scented candle. Last thing orange tastes like a nice pumpkin pie after dinner. Wow, we are already done. I hope that you saw, tasted, smelled and felt the colours!

Miss Crawford’s Kindergarten class honoured Anti-Bullying Day in a big way! They performed a song about kindness at the school assembly and designed their own “Pink Day” T-shirts. They looked at all the different t-shirts from the past years and decided on some great slogans for their shirts: “Be a Buddy, not a Bully!”, “Safe School Zone”, and “Bullying Stops Here!” were a few of their great ideas.
