Rimbey Midget Renegades advance to Provincials

It’s March madness for Rimbey Midget Renegades.

The team’s first place finish in league play secured them a bye in playoffs, but they were up against Hinton last weekend for a two game total point challenge.

The first game was held in Rimbey, Friday at 3:15 p.m. and the Renegades traveled to Hinton for the final game.

The third weekend in March, the Renegades will attend the provincial ‘B’ tournament hosted by Ponoka where they will play for a chance to win gold.

Rimbey defeated the Wolves 5 – 3 and 6 – 3 to win Zone 4 and advance to Provincials.

Coach Corey Scott is proud of his team.

“I’ve got a nice blend of talent, camaraderie and heart,” he said. “And we’ve got a great leadership group on the

team.”

Scott is pleased Rimbey picked up three Eckville players; Curtis Rangen, Wyatt Flemming and Quinton Marki this year.

“We combined with Eckville as they didn’t have a team,” he said.

“Overall, I’m just really happy with my team and everybody works hard.”

Snow blower streamlines the town’s snow removal

The town’s investment of a snow blower could prove to be of long-term benefit by providing a streamlined method of snow removal.

Interim CAO Donna Tona said the blade, which cost $115,000 (funds taken from road reserves) is efficient and well worth the dollars spent. She said the snow blower works on the

Tona said public works crews are doing their best to keep on top of snow removal, but she said business owners need to be responsible for keeping a path open from the street to the front of their building.

Council, at its February 9 meeting, debated the enhanced service level with regard to snow sweeping the downtown business sidewalks.

Previously, town staff provided extra snow services that were not stated in a bylaw.

After discussions, council agreed they were not prepared to foot the bill for the cost of new equipment necessary to continue this service.

February is a test that the purgatory winter can bestow upon our souls. Christmas has long since been fashioned into a memory, and all of its cards have been stowed away or recycled. I felt a weight holding me down – a weight I feel every time during this part of the year. There is no shame, no guilt, no worry, no fear, and no depression with this weight – winter has long since over stayed its welcome. The weight I felt is a personal sensation of the notion that winter needs to end, and spring needs to emerge.

During the summer there is no weight – all it takes to shave thin the overwhelming mental gravity life can inflict is to use part of the long day to add a mile or two to the odometer of the motorcycle.

A little travel in personal solitude to flip through the pages of my conscious and its atlas are a self-prescribed remedy

to many mental ailments.

But the long days of summer are months away.

As February ticked down on its last day, winter was granted a chance to redeem part of its abominable anguish.

I caught an article online claiming the Northern Lights would be easily seen on the night of the 28th.

My laptop wasn’t even closed on my kitchen table and I was already getting fuel and a caffeine enriched beverage from a gas station in town. I didn’t care if I had to drive all night to find them – I was going to stand under the nightscape’s dancing lights.

I shot out west and struggled to find a radio station that was playing all the right music. Quickly out to the south I recognized the constellation of Orion; it would have been better suited to have him appear on the north side as then I could have claimed Orion was riding shotgun in my truck.

road and watched a great crane operate to feed and satisfy the electric desires of man. The mechanized skeleton strained against its own structure and creaked furiously as it scavenged through the rich earth. I began to venture back home to Rimbey – I felt as though the Northern Lights were scrawled over by the glow of the artificial lights of man to remain unseen.

My truck, now travelling straight south, shot back home when I was teased by the reflection of my instrument panel lights in the driver’s side window. A few turns of the radio’s tune knob found a continuous stream of acoustic music. Another glance out the window banished any second thoughts of an illusion – the Northern Lights had finally emerged. I was eastbound on Highway 13 and found a quiet space to turn off the pavement.

I shut off the engine and the lights of my truck.

The towering pillars of emerald lights were winter’s gift to the nightscape. The Northern Lights are a diametric opposition to the emotions a dark winter can bestow. I stood on the side of the road and turned a full circle – there wasn’t a manmade light to be seen anywhere. Orion was still standing in the south and had a good view, like me, of the cascading green lights in the sky. My mind was relishing in moment only the moonlight, the starlight, and the Aurora Borealis can accentuate.

With the same ease I can turn the rheostat and dim the interior lights of truck, the Northern Lights had begun to fade from the sky. The last evening in February had been a gift of the beauty winter was capable of showing. Winter’s weight was no longer upon me.

MLA Anglin says stop gambling with the budget

Soon I found the illumination of my headlights pointing north and there still wasn’t any hints of the Northern Lights – just a few stars and the synthetic glows from the farm yard light standards. I struggled with the radio – my truck has a weak antenna – and found I was slipping farther from the hope of hearing music for a while.

My mind had eased into gentle conscious hallucinations – I was daydreaming during the nighttime. After a stretch of heading north, my truck was now rolling east; and before long I was northbound again. I was on the fringe of receiving Edmonton’s radio signals when a station was suddenly received in full clarity spewing electric dance music and instantly the industrious lights of Genesee filled my windshield as a brief evening portrait.

I pulled off along a side

Alberta’s largest customer and the world’s largest consumer of crude oil, the United States, announced today that its crude oil inventory storage levels stand at approximately 60 per cent, or 80-million barrels above last year’s levels.

At this production and storage pace, inventory levels south of the border are set to reach an all time high in 2015. The U.S. oil inventory (supply) levels are significant for Alberta’s economic out-look. Simply stated as the supply of oil rises – prices drop! While no one can accurately predict the future price for a barrel of oil, rising oil inventory levels in the U.S. signals a drop in Alberta’s oil revenues.

Oil companies that prepared for a drop in price will suffer through lower oil prices, as many have done in the past when the price of oil collapsed. Those companies that did not prepare for a drop in oil prices will suffer the most.

In some cases they will not survive if the price

remains low for any length of time. Eventually their assets become a buying opportunity for the more astute companies. Such is the way of the free market!

Watching the free market mechanisms function may be interesting for the employed economic spectator, but it does little to ease the stress and strain on the individual worker standing in the unemployment line. Unemployment and drop in business activity, particularly small business activity, is a serious problem for Alberta’s economy. Alberta’s government could very well learn from the companies that prepared for the drop in oil prices when it introduces this month’s budget.

Many companies that prepared for the lower oil prices did so by hedging their position. They trimmed capital (inefficient) spending, and hedged the price of oil. Hedging the price of oil is a market strategy that companies use to protect their investments from a drop in the price of oil. It’s a market strategy the Alberta Government has never used and no one can explain why.

As the Prentice government roles out its austerity budget this month, Finance Minister, Robin Campbell, needs to explain why we don’t hedge our resource (oil) revenues to protect taxpayers from a drop in oil prices. Had the Redford government employed hedging strategies in last year’s budget, we would not be talking about a $7 billion dollar budget deficit today. If the Prentice government hedges its oil revenues in the forthcoming budget, thereby locking in the price of projected oil revenues, further risk of a budget deficit can be avoided.

Alberta’s economy is extremely fragile right now. By all indications, private sector unemployment is expected to rise as the price of oil drops or remains low for any length of time. If this month’s proposed 2015 austerity budget fails to lock in the price of oil (hedge), and unnecessarily exacerbates unemployment, this failure could be the catalyst for a recession. It’s time this government hedged its resource revenue, stabilized its budget and stopped gambling with the economy.

Landowners encouraged to decommission wells

In an ongoing project across the province, landowners are being encouraged to decommission wells that have outlived their lifespan.

In an effort to further educate the public on the matter, two workshops are being held at Schultz Hall (Highway 53 east of Ponoka) on Thursday March 12 and at Tees Hall (Highway 12 and Secondary Highway 821) on Thursday March 19. Admission to both is free.

Alberta agricultural water engineer Brandon Leask will be presenting at both workshops to make people aware that they should be properly decommissioning appropriate wells.

Part of the presentation will include information on the Growing Forward on Farm Water Management program. “In terms of the grant program for active ranchers, producers, farmers . . . we’ll pay up to 50 per cent (up to $2,000) if they use a licensed company,” said Leask.

The cost of decommissioning a well depends on its dimensions.

“We just want to make

sure that if someone is going to do it themselves, they’re doing it properly,” said Leask.

Part of the process is keeping the province updated on their activity for the provincial database.

“If someone decommissions a well, we want to update that (in the) database,” he added.

In order to be able to apply to the grant program, landowners must also have a long term water management plan. “The idea is to have people think about their water source from time to time,” said Leask.

“What water they have and what they can do to improve it,” he added.

Some wells ready for decommissioning can pose an environmental or safety concern, Leask says there are others that pose no risk at all.

“It’s (wells) access to an aquifer, containments can get down,” he explained.

Alberta Environment’s initiative to have the wells decommissioned is a proactive step, says Leask.

It is also a legal requirement. There are thousands across the province that still need decommissioning.

Sgt. Groves takes readers on a ride-a-long with his police report This week, Rimbey RCMP detachment responded to 40 calls for service, including theft, fraud, domestic violence, drugs, break and enter, and other serious matters.

Often, we are asked if we would entertain the idea of having a ride-a-long for an evening. Sometimes, the inquisitive person wants to see if it’s anything like they see on television. Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate such requests. So, in this week’s Police Report, I am going to take you on a ride-a-long with me... or I will at least try to paint the picture of what last Saturday night would have been like if you were my partner. However, I promise you it will not be like the last Hawaii 5-0 episode you watched in more ways then one! Aside from the lack of sand, bikinis and an ocean breeze, we are not going to solve a triple homicide in less then an hour!

We start our shift at 6 p.m. and go over a few sound rules to ensure your safety. Next, we do two hours of paperwork from the domestics we attended the night before. I wish I were kidding! We then hit the road and patrol through Bluffton, Hoadley and east on Highway 611 to the gas plant area looking for speeders and anyone out and about that look like they are up to no good.

As we circle through Parkland Beach, we are dispatched to a 911 call from a frantic Rimbey homeowner who was having a few friends over for a party which had escalated out of control and now there was an intoxicated person there who was no longer welcome and refused to leave.

Const. Langley, who is also on duty with us to-

night, is already cruising by the scene so he quickly locates the unwanted guest and places him under arrest. You and I patrol the area to ensure all is quiet while Const. Langley transports the accused to the closest jail in Sylvan Lake.

A few minutes later, we hear Const. Langley on the police radio pulling over a car. Evidently, a drunk driver nearly crashed into him en route to jail and needs to be detained before he kills someone. We know that Const. Langley is going to be tied up for a while with his arrests, so we are now on our own to look after the nearly 2,000 square kilometres in our detachment area.

Shortly after 1 a.m., we give a speeder a ticket on Highway 20, then we receive another 911 call. This time, it is a lady in Rimbey reporting that she was fast asleep in her home when an unknown man started banging on the door trying to get in. The frightened homeowner ran to her bathroom and locked herself inside to hide from the intruder. You and I respond as quickly as possible with lights and siren to her address as she keeps the 911 Operator informed of what is happening. While we are en route to the scene, the adult male had been able to force his way through the front door and is now in the living room. As we get close to the address, we shut off the siren and stealthily park next door and approach her house. Through the window, we can see a man lying on the couch in the living room. In the blink of an eye, we enter the house and take hold of the man, putting him securely in handcuffs. We inform the poor lady that she is no longer in any danger and the intruder is going to jail. Apparently, he had been drinking at a local bar and got so drunk that he thought he had broken into his own house! Either way, off to jail we go with the sot to the Queen’s Hotel so he can sleep it off without breaking any more laws.

Fortunately for us, two Sylvan Lake Detachment members had also been responding to this call to back us up and they graciously offer to take our prisoner to

jail with them on their way back to Sylvan Lake.

It is now 2 a.m. and the Northern Lights are out dancing in the northern sky which is something we don’t see too often in this area. We slowly drive through a residential neighbourhood in town and see two men walking down the middle of the street.

When they see us, the bigger of the two men throws a beer bottle down in an attempt to hide his indiscretions. The shorter of the two characters panics and puts his beer bottle in his pocket. Being a bit of an environmentalist, I don’t have much time for litterbugs, so we drive up to have a chat with the two good ol’ boys. When we ask them for ID, the one gentleman states that he had his wallet stolen from the bar earlier in the night.

We ensure that neither of the men is wanted on any outstanding warrants and I recognize one as being a person I gave a warning to recently for speeding on Highway 53. Before we depart their company, we have the one man pick up the beer bottle he had thrown and we head to the bar.

Outside the tavern, an obviously intoxicated female is finishing her alcoholic beverage on the sidewalk while talking to her BFF on her cell phone. She slowly gazes

up at us and complains that her wallet was stolen in the bar. Concerned that there may be a thief inside the bar preying on patrons’ wallets, we decide to do a walk through the bar. As

soon we enter the establishment, the sounds of really bad karaoke hurt our ears. Several guests see us come in and one says, “Hi Mark, how’s your night?”

Forshee Hall continues to attract events

Forshee Community Hall seems to be a hub of activity all year long, and, even as some country halls seem to have disappeared along with changing times, this hall continues to flourish.

The hall’s AGM will be held March 15 at 5 p.m. and will include potluck and cards. The meeting starts at 5 p.m. and supper will be held at 6 p.m.

Beauchamp Colclough, secretary treasurer for the Forshee Community Hall said the hall is a busy place with events and activities ongoing.

The hall is a natural meeting place for family gatherings including reunions, weddings, funerals and dances. It has also proven to be a popular spot for organizations and groups to get together for meetings. Participants have traveled from Edmonton, Calgary, and even from points in Saskatchewan and British Columbia for these meetings.

Dance music with Country Gold North which is held the first Friday of each month has proven to be popular and usually attracts from 60 to 110 people. “Lots of people travel to come to these dances, Colclough said.

With lunch included in the low admission price of $10, and children under the age of 17 allowed in for free, it is not surprising some good crowds show up to attend these dances.

Another popular event held at the Forshee Hall is the Academy of European Swords which is held Monday evenings.

Justin Skjonsberg, who brought in the course, said interest is catching on in the European martial art sport and up to 24 participants have showed up for a training session.

Long time local blood donor recognized

When Sheryl Boyes was 18-years-old, her father encouraged her to become a blood donor.

“It was always the thing he did,” said Boyes of her father Roy McNaught.

The teen was happy to follow in her father’s footsteps as a blood donor, but a few years later, as a busy young wife and mother, taking the time to give blood became less important.

It wasn’t until her sister was in a serious car accident and needed several units of blood that she put it back on her priority list.

“It was a wake up call for me. I knew I needed to get back into it,” she said.

On Monday, March 2,

Boyes, who is from Bluffton, gave blood for the seventy-fifth time.

She is pleased she has been able to give blood and plans to keep on giving.

“I’ve never needed a transfusion and hope I never do, but if I did I would hope the blood supply would be there for me.”

Giving blood does make a difference, she said.

“Look around you. How many of your family and friends wouldn’t be here if nobody gave?”

Giving blood does have a social benefit as well, she said.

“I’ve met family, friends, neighbours, former students (at the clinic) and I’ve even gotten pledges for Terry Fox.”

Sheryl Boyes from Bluffton is recognized for her 75th time of donating blood. Boyes was at the blood donor clinic in Rimbey on March 2.

Police ride-a-long Continued from page 7 Over his shoulder, I could see a man turn quickly and run like a gazelle out of the bar through the back door. Without hesitation, I chase after him through the bar and into the alleyway. Since I can run a lot faster mad than he can scared, I close the distance and get close enough to yell words of encouragement for the man to stop before things get worse.

I recognize the man as he is well known to police. He is currently out on $4,000 bail with a long list of conditions to abide by, including to not be in a bar or drink. Since you are in much better shape than I am, you watch over the detainee while I catch my breath! As we are searching the man at the police car to ensure he does not have any weapons, a silver car speeds past us with its muffler roaring as it accelerates quickly down the street.

Unfortunately, there is only you and I as Const. Langley is still dealing with the

drunk driver he caught earlier, so it is this bad driver’s lucky day since we cannot even go after him.

We depart the bar with our prisoner on our way to Sylvan Lake to lodge our accused in jail when the police dispatcher puts out a BOLO (Be On the Look Out) for a silver car that was just reported stolen in Rimbey. We both look at each other in disgust since that was likely the same car that sped past us at the bar a few minutes ago.

We head south on Highway 20 with our prisoner as Const. Langley tells us he can meet us on the highway to get our prisoner from us. As we pull up to where Const. Langley is going to meet us near Bentley, we see a car parked on the side of Highway 12 where the driver is standing on the road with his door open urinating. We transfer the prisoner to Const. Langley’s police car and we stop to check the driver out and, of course, he is drunker than a skunk. We ask him

his name and he quickly responds with a first and last name. He tells us that he forgot his wallet at home so he has no ID to prove who he is.

A lady in the front passenger seat jumps out and says that she was driving, not him. She too is highly inebriated! We ask the gentleman his middle name while he zips up his pants and he stutters... ahhhh... ahhh “Phillip”. We ask his date of birth... he quickly responds, “April 1920”!

Since both of these folks were in their 20’s, there was no way we could let them drive away. After a little digging into their story, we determine that neither are allowed to be together as a court order prohibits them from any contact with one another. A tow truck arrives and impounds the car and the two nay doers are swiftly taken to Sylvan Lake detachment by our fellow work mate.

Just when we think our night will settle down, a domestic dispute in progress

is dispatched to us. Allegedly, an adult female is in the middle of the road in Rimbey screaming at her husband who is walking down the street leaving the property. We quickly attend to the scene and proceed to deal with the difficult task of helping the couple through their situation. Afterwards, we patrol around town and the surrounding area looking for the silver car reported stolen earlier in the evening. With no success in locating the car, I drop you off at home for some well-deserved rest.

Pro bull riding event successful Corey and Darla Cipperley from Rimbey had a dream to be promoters of a professional bull riders event and with the help of Jeff and Andria Sahli from Red Deer that dream became a reality.

On Feb 21 at 7 p.m. the event took place at the Enmax Centrium in Red Deer.

It was the first time dirt replaced the ice in 16 years.

With the major sponsor Rebel Energy Service Ltd. from Red Deer as well as many other sponsors the event was a huge success.

A total of 31 top bull riders from Canada, USA, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand participated. Top bulls came from nine Alberta stock contractors.

Local bull riders included Cawl Braithwaite and Jesse Torkelson.

Aaron Ferguson, Scotty Byrne and Brett Monea, three great bull fighters did an amazing job projecting the bull riders.

The success of the event was made possible through all these people as well as the announcer, judges, rodeo clown, pick up man, sports medical team, Alberta Paramedical Services.

New advisory committee plans to hold next meeting in-camera

A committee of council, formed to improve economic development in Rimbey, is holding its next meeting behind closed doors.

The terms of the committee bylaw state all meetings will be open to the public and will be advertised on the town’s website and posted at the town administration office, and when practical, advertised in the Rimbey Review.

However, Stevenson said a meeting to be held March 11 which will look at developing two working committees will be held in-camera.

“There is a lot of work

to do right now, but it must remain confidential at this point,” he said. “Everything has to go to town council for approval. Then it can become public information.”

He said the committee is just on the ground floor of improving economic development in Rimbey.

“You need to look at the positives, but you also need to figure out what’s causing the negatives.”

Mayor Rick Pankiw and interim CAO Donna Tona both stated they had not been approached regarding the incamera meeting.

Equine first aid courses to be offered here soon

Courses offering basic and advanced emergency first aid equine care training will soon be available at Windhorse Retreat near Rimbey.

The basic equine first aid course, which is a prerequisite for the advanced course, will be offered March 21.

The advanced course will be offered April 25.

Sandy Bell, who owns Windhorse Retreat will instruct the basic course which she said deals with fundamental skills such as bandaging and assessing the horse’s vital signs.

The Advanced Remote and Wilderness Equine First Aid course is being introduced this year and will also be offered at Windhorse Retreat.

“I’m so proud they are coming to Rimbey,” said

Bell, adding the Rimbey area is among the first in Alberta and Canada to be selected to offer the course.

Those who successfully complete the course will be certified by Equi-Health Canada.

“It is quite intensive and we will bring in specialized instructors for it,” she said.

Equi-Health Canada/ Equi-First Aid U.S. is an international organization dedicated to helping owners and enthusiasts improve the health and safety of equines.

Their instructors provide emergency first aid training to individuals, clubs and organizations across Canada, the United States and in other countries, as well.

The first aid courses were developed by veterinarians in conjunction with farriers, equine chiropractors, equine massage therapists, back country outfitters and others.

Royal Purple Lodge doing well in Bentley

The Royal Purple Lodge No. 264 is alive and well in Bentley. Despite a slight name change and the Bentley Elks closing down, the ladies still meet regularly on the second Monday of most months at 7 p.m. in the Bentley Legion Hall (the old Oxford School beside the Bentley town office).

“It will be the same group, and we will continue to do the same thing, but just not be affiliated with the Elks,” explained Honored Royal Lady Julie Potter who says things evolve continually.

She went on to say, “Some money that we used to give to the Elks /Royal Purple Children’s Fund will now be able to be used locally, so that could be a benefit (locally).”

Powerful moms Super dads program fun and informative

The Powerful moms and Super Dads free program which came to Rimbey last week proved to be interesting, informative and, fun for the whole family.

Leanne Evans, program co-ordinator Rimbey Early Child Development Coalition said comments from the parents and caregivers were positive and many people indicated they would like to see the program return.

“The speakers were wonderful and there was lots of positive feedback,” she said. “And the entertainment was absolutely fantastic.”

For Evans the most rewarding part of the program was to observe the adults who attended the program. She said it was obvious that those in attendance were interested in learning and becoming

more educated in ways of providing the best possible care and nurturing experiences for their young families.

“The speakers reinforced the importance of development from zero to five,” she said. “But they also stressed that it’s never too late, you can always make things better.”

Evans said speakers also pointed out that adults need to be aware that attitudes are contagious and children are quick to pick up on communication styles and underlying tensions.

“Interactions that adults have with each other (when the child is young) can affect that child’s choices when he or she is older,” she said.

About 40 adults and several children attended the event held at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre last Saturday.

Lynne Ings from Bluffton went on stage at the Super Moms Powerful Dads program where she had fun with world class acrobats, the Leaping Lemurs and Lyne Gosselin.

Royal Purple Lodge active in Bentley

Helping out: Val Hilliker, a Rimbey ventriloquist is spending some time in Fiji where she is teaching children the chill skills (chill, help, ignore, look-up and leave) skills through her puppets. She is also on a children’s program in Fiji with her puppets. She will return to Rimbey March 11.

Continued from page 14 The group officially received their new charter dated December 22/2014 at their regular meeting on February 23 from Esther Smith, the First Vice President of the Alberta Royal Purple Association. Smith is a member in the Bentley group.

Members have received new membership cards but the group retains their old lodge number and the number of years they have been in existence is still recognized.

Due to a decree by the executive of the Elks of Canada, the Order of Royal Purple of Canada ceased to exist as of January 1.

Royal Purple members had been given the choice to join with the Elks or opt out on their own. Bentley members chose to join the Canadian Royal Purple Society whose head office is in Kamloops, B.C. Some other groups across Canada have opted to do the same thing.

Purple folded after 50 years as they struggled with decreased membership, but Bentley, Sundre, Caroline, and Red Deer continue in this area.

The Royal Purple will retain their ceremonies, regalia and much the same mission statement and goals of being a leading national organization of fun loving, dynamic, dedicated volunteers helping children in the community.

The Bentley group has been active for over 53 years (chartered in April, 1961) and is continuing to help with the local school scholarships and awards, rodeo weekend fireworks, and now the 100th anniversary of Bentley, and will continue to help children/families as the need arises, and also support other ventures like kid’s camps, etc.

The local group is still able to host casinos as their major fundraiser.

Active members include Honored Royal Lady Julie Potter, Associate Royal

Lady Brenda Valiquette, secretary Joan Dickau, treasurer Sharon Mckeage, historian Sharon Wells, pianist Alice Neumeier, Chaplain Bonnie Metro, Conductress Evelyn Pederson, Loyal Lady Agnes Stoness and more.

Non-active life members include Gladys Holmen, Helen Butcher, Mary Wilton-Davis, Clarabel Witwer, Florence Weisner and Donna Kristianson.

Charter members are Joan Dickau, Helen Butcher, Gladys Holmen, and Mary Wilton-Davis.

The local Royal Purple now lease the historic brick hall they meet in from the town as they cannot afford to pay all the bills and the upkeep of the hall without the Bentley Elks Lodge #318 who were the major contributor. The local Elks lodge closed the end of 2013 after serving the community for 65 years.

The Royal Purple of Canada had celebrated 100 years at their convention in 2014.

William “Bill” Baron WILSON Bruce P. June 29, 1935 March 3, 2015 It is with saddened hearts that the family announces the passing of Mr. Bruce P. Wilson.

Bruce dedicated his entire working career to funeral service in Calgary, Red Deer, Sylvan Lake and Rocky Mountain House. For the past 38 years, he was honoured to serve the communities of Rimbey, Bentley and Lacombe.

Bruce is survived by his loving wife and best friend Mary Lou; two daughters Kathleen (Gerald) Bolze, Sandra (Jackie)Wilson, granddaughter Shauna (Kevin) Kranenborg, grandson Stacey Bolze, greatgrandchildren; Kyler & Selena Kranenborg and Bryn Maetche, second family Steve (Terry) Maetche, Kyle (Jodi), Scott, Curtis; Ken (Dawn) Maetche, Tanner and Josh; Rory (Cheryl) Maetche, Jeremy and Kevin; one sister, Joyce (Walter),Ingrid Vollmerhaus, one brother Robert (Linda), Scott and Erin. He was predeceased by his parents James and Evelyn Wilson, and extended family Everett and Ellen Mayhood, and Alys Wilson.

Bill Baron was born on September 6, 1929 in Stony Plain, Alberta to parents Anna and Adam Baron and passed away on February 28, 2015 at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Center at the age of 85 years. William “Bill” Baron is survived by his wife Elizabeth and five sons; Danny (Bev) Baron and daughter Breanne (Jerry) Dhaliwal (grandchildren Soraya, Kaelan and Kiara) and son Jeremy; Dwayne (Janice) Baron and children Justin (Jolene), Adam, Kayla (Kory); Greg (Dalene) Baron and son Connor; Mark (Dana) Baron children, Andrew, Jesse, Lexi, and Trevor; Lionel (Charmen) Baron and children Shayna, Bryan and Kameryne. Bill was predeceased by his parents; his grandson Gavin Dale Baron; his brothers Val, Otto and George and his sisters Bertha McDonald and Olga Seely.

A Funeral Service was held on Friday, March 6 at 11:00 a.m. at the Peter Lougheed Center in Rimbey, Alberta with Pastor Mark Schultz officiating. Interment followed at the Forest Home Cemetery in Ponoka, Alberta.

Start date: May 5, 2015 – August 29, 2013 Rimbey Municipal Library requires a creative and enthusiastic student to help organize and deliver this year’s Summer Reading Program. This position requires excellent communication and organizational skills and a passion to deliver programs that encourage children to celebrate the wonders of literacy.

Primary duties include the planning, promoting and facilitating of all summer programs for youth and children in the Rimbey Municipal Library. Other duties include circulation, shelving and processing of books as well as assisting patrons with various needs.

A minimum of one year post secondary education is required. The applicant must be enrolled in a post secondary institution in the upcoming year. Qualifications include the ability to deal well with the public, experience working with children, general knowledge of library procedures, and the ability to lift and carry at least 25 lbs up or down one flight of stairs. The successful applicant must demonstrate maturity, strong interpersonal skills and creative ability.

Cutting Edge 2015 Livestock Care Conference features session for post-secondary students Salt Spring Island, known for its creative passion in arts and sustainability, is honoring Canadian artists by providing them with the opportunity to earn up to 25,000 in prize money, with the Salt Spring National Art Prize competition. In total, 50 final works will be selected and displayed in SSNAP’s artist collective show catalogue.

The first place prize is $10,000 and a one-month artist residency on the island.

Salt Spring Island calls to artists in communities throughout Canada Can an unknown artist win a national art prize and contend with the best?

Canadaís premier art communities. In total, 50 final works will be selected, displayed in SSNAPís artist collective show catalogue.

Original works will be exhibited and for sale at historic Mahon Hall on Salt Spring Island, from September 25 through to October 26, 2015.

The list of finalists will be announced on Friday, September 25 with winners announced at an awards gala on Saturday, October 24, 2015.

SSNAP welcomes artists Canada-wide to submit original two-dimensional and three-dimensional works, with the call for submissions now open to May 31, 2015.

The Livestock Care Conference is on March 26 and 27 at the Calgary Stampede Grounds. Meet the Experts takes place on the

afternoon of March 26.

Keynote speakers as well as a diversified panel are featured on March 27. Hall explains that because AFAC is a multispecies organization it is important to include as many different species as possible. The panel will have representation from goat producers, beekeepers, bison producers and someone from the growing rabbit industry.
