hen a child or teenager is diagnosed with a serious illness like cancer or organ failure, friends and neighbors often drop off casseroles or ask how they can help. The community rallies around the effected family to buoy them with support in their time of need.

Not so — at least until now — when the diagnosis is a mental health issue. In fact, parents often say that their journey through the medical system, education, and social services, as well as society at large, with a child or youth with

a mental health issue is one of the most lonely, isolating and emotionally difficult they have ever faced.

“My daughter’s struggle with severe depression was more difficult for me than my husband’s sudden death,” said one mother, who is a family representative in the Interior’s child and youth mental health collaborative. “After he died, people brought food, came by to watch my kids, let me cry and talk. When my daughter got ill, people stayed far away, but I needed more support than ever.”

Keli Anderson, co-founder of the F.O.R.C.E Society for Mental Health (Families Organized for Recognition and Care Equality) knows that experience well.

Her young son began showing behavioural problems and mental health issues 22 years ago at the age of five, which turned out to be very early-onset bipolar disorder.

Anderson felt shamed, blamed and completely on her own to navigate confusing and uncompassionate systems and an indifferent society.

So the BC mother along with another mother facing the same challenges started the F.O.R.C.E. (forcesociety.com) to provide support, information, understanding and advocacy for families with chil-

dren and youth with mental health issues.

One of their popular and very helpful programs is the parent in residence and youth in residence positions in various regions, staffed by individuals with lived experience in child and youth mental health who help those just encountering the system, or any way along their journey.

Thanks to the work of organizations like The F.O.R.C.E — which truly has become a force in BC for family support and advocacy — as well as the growth of other support organizations, families are no longer so alone.

Youth and families are also front and centre in the child and youth mental health and substance use collaborative, which started in the Interior a year ago and is now expanding to Vancouver Island.

Jointly funded by the BC government and Doctors of BC, the collaborative is bringing families and youth together with a wide array of BC mental health professionals, including clinicians from the Ministry of Children and Family Development, physicians, school counsellors, community agencies, the RCMP and more.

Together the more than 350 members of the collaborative are

working to improve timely access and integration of child and youth mental health services in the province by working on local action teams in various communities, and finding solutions to system barriers through working groups.

This series of seven columns is part of the work to improve mental health awareness and reduce barriers to care.

Fortunately, the unnecessary stigma that has surrounded mental illness for decades is finally beginning to lessen. An increasing number of articulate, compassionate and public individuals are coming forward to tell their personal stories of life with a mental illness.

Public individuals like Olympic athlete Clara Hughes, CBC radio host Sheilagh Rogers, actress Catherine Zeta Jones, and comedian Robin Williams have all raised awareness and understanding, and reduced stigma to unprecedented levels.

Youth, too, are coming forward in schools and communities to share their experiences and help others make the path less isolating. This growing openness and recognition is helping all of us understand that mental illness touches us all and that fostering mental wellness is a task for every one of us.

The child and youth mental health and substance use collaborative has received funding through to 2016 and is determined to make the experience for youth and families much more timely, efficient, effective and less isolating.

While we still have a ways to go, with increased education and awareness, better integration of services, more family support and advocacy, as well as reduced levels of stigma, the future is growing ever brighter for children, youth and families experiencing mental health issues.

Dr. David Smith is an adolescent and adult psychiatrist and the medical director of the Okanagan Psychiatric services for Interior Health.

This series of columns on common child and youth mental health issues is a project of the child and youth mental health and substances use collaborative.

The collaborative involves multiple individuals, organizations and ministries all working together to increase the number of children, youth, and their families receiving timely access to mental health services and support in the Interior Health and Vancouver Island regions. The collaborative is jointly funded by Doctors of BC and the government of BC.

The Ministry of Health recently announced that families in the Lower Mainland would have a quick and easy way to access mental health and substance use services for children and youth through an online interactive map.

The Kootenay Boundary area is already one step ahead because since last year, youth who struggle with mental health issues have had a range of help that’s just a click away.

The KB Searchlight was launched last fall, as a one stop web resource that streamlines support services for youngsters up to age 18 in all communities from Nakusp through the Slocan Valley to Trail, and southwest to the Grand Forks area through to Beaverdell.

The link opens with a userfriendly map that is accessed by visiting kootenayfamilyplace.org and clicking on the KB Searchlight link.

The website format is easy to use and provides detailed regional information for service organizations that can help with child and youth health matters such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders and substance use.

All you need to do is click on where you live to highlight a multitude of service information, including hospital liaison phone numbers, regional family programs, Freedom Quest contacts, and early intervention programs.

“We just want families in the region to know that the resource is there for them and that they are not alone,” said Rachel Schmidt, from the Kootenay Boundary Division

of Family Practice.

“That’s our key message.

Most of the time our families say they go to multiple agencies and have to tell their stories over and over again.

Navigating services and help in one spot just makes it easier for them and helps them through a crisis if that’s what is going on.”

The project was part of a provincial initiative that launched last year through the Doctors of BC and Ministry of Health to address concerns about the lack of fluidity parents and health care providers experienced trying to access care for children with mental health illnesses.

Locally, Kootenay Boundary Shared Care committee teamed with the Interior Health Authority to break down communication barriers between the area’s service

providers and practitioners and provide better continuity for available programs, including detailed contacts for youth and their families.

“Ours is a unique perspective,” said Schmidt. “So far through Shared Care we’ve been able to pull all those people to the table, including physicians, because often the physicians aren’t there. That’s what makes this different — we have the doctors on board, and that’s exciting.”

Dr. Lucinda Loukras, a Kootenay Boundary paediatric specialist, has been active on the committee for almost one year.

“Timely action is often an important part of dealing with mental health issues,” she said. “This website will quickly direct people searching for help to the most appropriate resources in their home

communities. It’s a resource for both the public and health care providers.”

The KB Searchlight website is part of the province’s child and youth mental health and substance use collaborative that began last year.

The coordinated efforts of the various health care sectors has a goal to provide timely access to integrated mental health and substance use supports throughout BC. Services are listed community by community throughout the West Kootenay to help families locate the help they need, including detailed information on agency contacts and hours; program types, wait times and referral protocols.

“While BC has a comprehensive system of communitybased resources for children and youth living with men-

tal health or substance use challenges, we understand that families sometimes face challenges in determining the best local resources for their child,” says Health Minister Terry Lake.

“The map provides a onestop shop for BC families trying to navigate the system of mental health and substance use supports and services around the province.”

More than 29,000 children and youth receive community mental health services annually in the province, which is more than double the number who received services in 2003, according to the Ministry of Health.

The ministry spent almost $1.4 billion over the last two years to address mental health and substance use issues, which is a 63 per cent increase since 2001.

New rural medical residency program aims to improve patient access and care

The University of British Columbia has decentralized the way it delivers medical education.

UBC has developed curriculum for delivering medical training in rural remote communities including the Kootenay Boundary and it has certainly been a big undertaking.

There is an innovative shift in UBC’s Family Medicine residency training programs from traditional urban academic structures towards a distributive model where the training is delivered in rural, remote sites and incorporates frontline rural family physicians and specialists as medical educators.

This change has occurred within both undergraduate and postgraduate educational programs and is evidenced by the many successfully established integrated clinical clerkships rural elective programs and rural family medicine residency programs.

Dr. Cheryl Hume, the director of UBC’s clerkships and residency program for the Kootenay Boundary, said these programs “provide a window of opportunity to mitigate the shortage of doctors (particularly in rural and remote communities).

“The community can be very proud of what we have developed,” she explained at a press conference in Rossland on Friday.

“This is a tremendously exciting and important development for our rural region and it has

been enthusiastically embraced and supported by the local medical staff of the area. The establishment of these programs has been supported by collaboration between UBC, the local physicians and allied health care workers, the Interior Health Authority, the Divisions of Family Practice and the Selkirk College rural pre-med program,” said Dr. Hume.

An integrated clinical clerkship program is already on offer. Four medical students each spend a full year of training in the Kootenay Boundary. A rural family medicine post graduate residency training program is now being developed.

“We are expecting four family medicine residents to join us starting in July. These programs, together with the Selkirk College rural pre-med program, will bring significant opportunities for rural physician recruitment and retention,” said Dr. Hume.

The post-graduate rural training will provide real exposure to real medicine. Students will be involved in interdisciplinary training within the communities they are based throughout the Kootenays. Being a remotely based doctor means knowing a lot more and having to deal with a broad range of health care issues. Students gain the necessary skills required to confidently enter a rural practice on conclusion of their qualification.

Dr. Granger Avery, the BC candidate for president of the Canadian Medical Association, expands on this by describing how innovative this delivery model for medical education is for the health care

industry.

“The value of this program is truly cutting edge in medical education,” he said. “[In terms of] the spiral way it is organized for going into specialties. The students get to experience things they would not get to do in other places. Those sorts of things are fundamental in how to practice.

This education delivery is a flagship model for medical education and how education can be delivered remotely. UBC has brought in information technology support for a virtual classroom.

“One of the really exciting things about being involved is the advanced technology we have available for teaching. We have seen this unbelievable buy in, enthusiasm an excitement of our clinical facility in this area all looking to improve their teaching skills. It speaks to the spirit of the work that is being done,” said Dr. Michael Purdon, the executive medical director for Interior Health and lead for faculty development at UBC. The significance of these types of residency programs is that rural and aboriginal students can train in rural areas and not have to leave home for the city.

Nick Leinweber, a second year family medicine resident who has lived in Rossland for four years with his kindergarten-teaching wife, said that as a result of this program “I am now part of the community working from a Rossland-based and Christina Lake-based family practice. This is where my life is now.”

Place names A place name mystery: Howser, Hauser, Houser, or Hawser?

Eighty-eighth in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Howser presents one of the most perplexing place name mysteries in this area, with alternate spellings and red herrings galore.

Due to its complexity, we’ll devote several installments to it.

Paul and Marion Howser of Reigate, Surrey, England have gone to extraordinary lengths and travelled thousands of kilometers to sort it all out. While they haven’t learned precisely who the community was named after, in 2013 they produced an exhaustive report on the subject.

They note the surname Howser is very rare in the United Kingdom. They first learned it was a place in BC when Marion’s father gave them the fall 1980 edition of Beautiful British Columbia Magazine, which contained a photo of Howser Spire and a map showing the locality of Howser.

“We wondered how these geographical features came to be named and did not realize at the time that this would be the start of a research program extending over more than 30 years,” Paul writes.

Paul and Marion visited North America in 2004, 2005, and 2011 to further their investigation. Their search took them to dozens of archives and libraries as well as to Howser itself.

One of their most significant discoveries was that the earliest mention of Howser Creek, from which the community ultimately derives its name, appears in George M. Dawson’s The Mineral Wealth of British Columbia, published in the 1887-88 Annual Report of the Geological & Natural History Survey of Canada.

Dawson wrote: “‘Howser Creek: On this and another stream tributary to Duncan River, which flows into the north end of upper Kootenie [sic] Lake, coarse gold has been found.

No work of importance.”

The spelling is important, however, for Howser was also written Hauser and Houser.

Paul maintains Howser is the original and correct form. Howser Creek is also mentioned in a legal notice taken out by G.O. Buchanan in March 1890 and published in the British

Columbia Gazette, and further appears on Perry’s Mining Map of 1893. (Paul and Marion also located Father Pierre-Jean De Smet’s 1846 map of Oregon Territory, which shows Howser Creek as Rio Charles.)

Duncan Lake was formerly called Upper Kootenay Lake and Howser Lake. It was first mentioned by the latter name in the Nelson Miner of July 4, 1891, but spelled Hauser in the Miner on Dec. 31, 1892; Houser in the Nelson Tribune of April 20, 1893; and Hawser in the Miner of Oct. 5, 1895.

The Spokane Review of March 9, 1893 wrote: “Still they persevered, following slowly up the Lardo and Duncan rivers to Hauser lake or what is more commonly termed the upper Kootenai.”

But according to the Miner of May 20, 1893: “Hauser, or as it is incorrectly called on the government maps, Upper Kootenay Lake, is about as pretty a little sheet of water as one can find …”

When William Simpson and Shirley Keeling took out a pre-emption on Lot 528 on Aug. 25, 1892, their survey plan called it “Howser or Upper Kootenay Lake” — the first appearance on a map of Howser Lake by that name.

They established a townsite called Duncan or Duncan City, first mentioned in the Miner of Dec. 10, 1892 (we’ll explore the origins of that name in a later installment).

According to Elsie Turnbull in Ghost Towns and Drowned Towns of West Kootenay, the CPR offered $50,000 for the townsite (something like $1.3 million today) but the owners refused. Consequently, the railway bypassed the town and Howser station was built about a mile inland from Howser Lake.

Over the next few years, the town’s name was in flux. In 1893, merchant Frank Heap advertised in the Kaslo Claim that he was doing business at Houser City, but maps showed it as Duncan City. The 1899 Minister of Mines report mentioned “Duncan City, or Howser as it is now called.”

In 1900, in anticipation of the Great Northern Railway building its own line through the Lardeau, Simpson and Keeling had their townsite resurveyed. This time it would be known as Hauser.

Next: Things get even more confusing.

Two men are seen on a corduroy trail along Howser Creek, ca. 1910. The creek is first mentioned in a document dated 1887-88.

Junior Dragons Den returns to Charles Bailey Theatre, May 1

Modeled after CBC’s The Dragons’ Den” where qualifying entrepreneurs pitch their business idea to a group of potential investors, Junior Dragons’ Den, the West KootenayBoundary wide business contest for youth entrepreneurs, is returning to the Charles Bailey Theatre on Friday, May 1.

Students from Grade 8 to college/trades level have until March 14 to submit a business concept paper and a 1.5 to two minute video elevator pitch, explaining their business idea.

Submissions will be evaluated based upon: finances, marketability, the product or service idea and the overall plan presented.

“We’re really excited to see this year’s submissions” stated Don Freschi, general manager, of Community Futures Greater Trail.

“Business concepts last year ranged from eco exhaust filters to all natural organic cosmetic products, and with the introduction of the college/trades student category for 2015, the sky’s the limit as to concept and creativity.”

The number of people who can hear well, but can’t understand what’s being said, is increasing. This is most evident in conversations and watching television. A newlydeveloped hearing chip is designed to restore speech comprehension without being noticeable in the ear.

A lot of people have poor comprehension, though they actually still hear well. It becomes noticeable in conversation, watching television and asking family to repeat what’s been said. A potential cause can be undetected loss in the high-frequency range. This means the sensory cells in the cochlea that hear high-range sounds are damaged as a result of circulatory disorders, diabetes, sudden hearing loss or workplace noise. Hearing loss in the highfrequency range makes speech sound muffled and unclear. The person with hearing loss mixes up, or can no longer hear, consonants like s, f, t, k, h and g.

Speech comprehension is particularly impaired when there is background noise or when television programs have background music. The dilemma is that people with hearing loss in the high-frequency range do not

The test phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role a new technology called “Autosense OS” plays. The chip recognizes where the person being spoken to is located and amplifies only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this significantly augments speech comprehension, especially in conversation.

Ian Harwood Ian Harwood has been involved in the light truck industry for the past 30 years. His career started with the opening of a small 4-wheel drive shop in the early 80s. This shop was involved in custom fabrication, complete 4x4 rebuilds, and sales of off-road related products.

This would prepare him for his current position as Manager for Custom Truck Parts, one of the largest accessory warehouses in Canada.

Ian started his journalism career in the late 1090s with a column in a national magazine for automotive enthusiasts.

In the spring of 2005 Ian was approached by a local news outlet to write a weekly column. Wilderness exploring, fishing and four wheeling have been his passion since he was a teenager.

Some memorable moments in Ian’s career are flying in by hto the famous Rubicon Trail in Northern California and driving a 2007 Jeep Wrangler out of the backwoods, up a waterfall and out of the trail to Lake Tahoe.

Bob McHugh For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, I’ve been writing about cars for over 25 years and I’m a long-term member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). My auto background is mainly in the service side of the industry as I’ve always had a keen interest in knowing how things work. Especially those oily, greasy parts that make the wheels go around.

My first car was an early sixties Triumph Herald Coupe (web example photo) that was traded-in to a dealership where I worked as an apprentice auto mechanic, back in Dublin, Ireland. It spent more time off the road, being repaired, than on the road, during my time as its owner.

A Herald had the same chassis and a similar powertrain as the much nicer looking Triumph Spitfire, which was sold in North America.

At the BC Automobile Association I initially worked as a mobile Vehicle Inspector in the Vehicle Inspection Service. The vehicle was an AMC Gremlin and it was painted to look like a cut-away or skeleton view of the car’s mechanical bits. A small car with a big gas-guzzling engine, a Gremlin was an odd choice of vehicle for that job and the paint job just added to its weirdness, yet I grew to like it.

Currently I enjoy serving on the AJAC Technology Awards panel and have also been involved in the promotion of trade skills training for young people in BC. When time permits, I still like to get my hands dirty and give my son a helping hand with, his pride and joy, a 1966 Ford Thunderbird coupe. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

The new 2016 Kia Sorento

Kia has only been in the Canadian marketplace for sixteen short years but in that time they have been able to utilize the resources of its parent company Hyundai to help carve out its own distinct brand. Design is a big part of the Kia’s success and this all-new third generation Kia Sorento is a perfect example of this approach. With fifty design awards under its belt, thanks to the direction of chief designer Peter Schreyer, Kia has pushed hard on the accelerator to update designs quickly, the last Sorento was introduced just two years ago. Not only has the design been evolving but Kia now has the same 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder available on five passenger versions of the Sorento, something Hyundai had exclusively in the Santa Fe until now.

Looks Since Kia and Hyundai share the vast majority of its platforms and engines, the design and packaging is

what makes them unique. This Sorento is sold as a five passenger or seven passenger versions utilizing the same vehicle dimensions. Hyundai has a different approach; it uses two separate models to achieve the same result, a shorter Santa Fe and a larger Santa Fe XL. Since Kia straddle the two, it makes shopping simpler for buyers. In addition, Kia believes the lower priced, $27,495 base 4-cylinder model will be attractive for shopping in the smaller compact SUV space that might like more space. The more expensive turbo and V6 equipped versions will compete in the mid-sized SUV space. The design is more athletic and solid thanks to a wider, longer and lower body that is accented by a new grille, headlamps, optional LED fog lights and new rear lighting treatment. Unfortunately, to get navigation, LED marker lights, Xenon headlamps, LED taillights and the 19-inch wheels, the buyer needs

to choose the top SX trim, these are not offered on lower models.

Inside Kia has a relentless pace to which they change its vehicles. This is no minor update, on the heals of a major update just two years ago, The dash and interior materials have all been updated along with the layout and design. There is a pleasant look and feel to the dash; the top SX trim is the only one with the beautiful 8-inch centre screen, with rich graphics and easy to use interface. The other models get the 4-inch screen or just a radio readout. Both the 4-inch and 8-inch get a backup camera, the base model gets rear sonar sensors. The good news is heated seats are standard on all models.

The middle EX trim is where most shoppers will buy, with features like leather seats, 10-way power driver’s seat, heated steering wheel and a 7-inch screen inside the instrument cluster. The top SX gets all the best stuff including the 8-inch navigation screen, heated rear seats, cooled front seats and upgraded Nappa leather. It’s a shame the bigger centre screen cannot be used on more trim levels.

Drive Since Kia has added a new 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder

engine into the mix, the ordering guide is a bit more complex, here is the easiest way to sort it out. The base LX five-seat is the only one sold with the 185hp 2.4L 4-cylinder engine, in both front wheel and all wheel drive. All other five-passenger models get the 240hp turbo and all seven-passenger models get the 290hp V6. The great news for five passenger buyers is that the turbo has more torque than the V6 and runs on regular grade gas. The V6 would be my choice thanks to its silky smooth power and more consistent fuel economy. Anyone who has ever driven a turbo knows that the power is great but if pushed, it will use more fuel. The all wheel drive models (AWD) now have a centre lock to continually lock the power with fifty percent going to the rear wheels. In addition, there is a new drive mode that changes the engine, transmission and steering feel for normal mode to sport or ECO for better fuel economy.

Verdict Kia does have a unique offering in the market thanks

to three engines, and five or seven passenger options and in a practical sized vehicle. The new turbo is powerful and sophisticated engine that will be welcome buy new buyers. Since the seven-passenger model is available on all trim levels Kia believes that roughly thirty five percent of buyers will choose this model, up from the eleven percent that currently buy it now. The constant pursuit of advanced design and creature comforts is welcome, I wish that the 8-inch screen was available on more than just the SX trim and some of the exterior updates were also shared with lower trim levels. Baie-Saint-Paul, Quebec – Certain car brands are synonymous with certain traits.

Say the word “performance,” and you’ll likely get a group of people talking about German engineering.

Say the word, “safety,” and chances are a certain Swedish automaker will be at the top of the list. What brands come to mind when you think of an all-wheel drive system? – I’m guessing Japanese, also German but how about Korean?

Okay, Hyundai is not the first automaker to come to mind when it comes to their AWD technology. It probably isn’t the second or even third. That said, they’re on a mission to change peoples’ minds.

Hyundai offers two distinct types of AWD systems.

One is used with platforms designed for front-wheel drive systems to enhance traction while maintaining fuel efficiency; the second is for rear-wheel drive based platforms and is programmed to increase performance

while maintaining control and drivability in slippery road conditions.

I had the chance to test both them out in extreme winter conditions and Baie-Saint-Paul, Quebec, certainly delivered on that promise! – I’m not entirely sure how much snow fell in the time my driving partner and I left the hotel for our morning exercises at Le Massif de Charlevoix ski area, but it seemed like 30 centimetres or more.

No, we didn’t shuttle people up and down the mountain to prove its capabilities. A closed course was set up with more than enough ice underneath to make things very interesting.

We’d put both the Genesis sedan and Santa Fe XL Crossover to the test.

Let the slipping and sliding commence. Part of winter driving, especially in these blizzard conditions, is largely about the tires. No matter how good an AWD system controls the torque split between the front and rear axels, if you don’t have grip, well, then it

can get really interesting. Like, Santa Fe XL meet the snow bank. Snow bank meet the Santa Fe XL. Luckily, this wasn’t the case.

Each vehicle had its own play area. The Genesis sedans played more on a skating rink-like surface while the Santa Fes romped in the snow. However, the icier surface was soon heavily covered in snow and visibility became quite grim. The activities were cut short but our drive route wasn’t.

The HTRAC (which stands for Hyundai TRACtion) allwheel drive system of the Genesis did work at getting us out of some sliding situations. As a bonus for 2015, the Genesis sedans come standard with all-wheel drive. So, if you happen to find yourself stuck in a snowstorm, you need not panic.

HTRAC also has some cool features associated with it.

The AWD control logic is different according to driving mode selection for enhanced drivability and efficiency.

For example, with the vehicle set in “Normal” mode, HTRAC defaults to a 40:60 rear-wheel biased torque distribution. The system can shift as much as 90 percent of engine output to the front axle in slippery conditions or 100 percent to the rear at higher speeds for reduced driveline drag and improved fuel economy.

At speed in “Sport” mode, HTRAC gives Genesis a distinctly rearwheel drive character by sending 80 to 90 percent of power output to the rear wheels.

The latter part of the drive day was in the comfort of the Santa Fe XL (XL meaning it has a longer wheelbase, room for up to seven passengers and comes with a V6 engine.)

The AWD system in Santa Fe mod-

els incorporates Active Cornering Control (ACC), an element within the Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system, which helps the vehicle manage acceleration in a corner.

To improve traction and cornering performance, braking force is applied to the inside rear wheel when accelerating through a turn.

Regardless of which vehicle we endured the storm, it’s certain that Hyundai has a good thing going on.
