Concerns about micro suites raised Alistair Waters A third proposal to build “micro suites” in Kelowna in the last few months has at least one city councillor calling for a review of city plans when it comes to encouraging the tiny rental units.

Coun. Like Stack said while he supports the latest proposal for a 24-unit development featuring the ultra-small apartments at the corner of Ethel Street and Glenwood Avenue, he has concerns about the impact more proposals could have on the city’s financial bottom line.

That’s because under provincial rules, micro suites are not subject to development cost charges. DCCs are used by the city to help pay for improvements to infrastructure surrounding a development, amenities such as roads, sidewalks, sewer and street lights.

“I wonder if this is a Luke Stack future trend,” Stack said at council’s regular weekly meeting Monday afternoon.

“Maybe it’s something we need to revisit in our policies.”

He said his concern was not based on any opposition to more micro suites developments in the city but rather the city’s plans for infrastructure improvements based the current level of expected DCCs. Developer Shane Worman wants to build two, twostorey walk-up buildings containing 12 units each on a small lot just north of the Cottonwoods care facility.

The units, expected to go on the rental market, would measure less than 320-square feet in size.

In recent weeks, the city has approved similar micro suite developments on Dickson Avenue, near the Landmark business buildings and near the UBCO Okanagan campus at the north end of the city.

Both of those developments may be popular with students of the university and Okanagan College who plan to live off campus.

The development planned for Ethel Street and Glenwood Avenue would include a parking lot with 24 stalls locate behind the buildings.

Visitor parking would have to be on Glenwood Avenue as Ethel is slated to become a major transportation route in future.

No on-site visitor parking is either required or planned for the development,say city planning department officials.

While the buildings fit with the zoning of the lot, the development will require a variance for its access off Ethel Street.

A public hearing on the proposal is slated for March 17 now that council has given it preliminary approval.

The man who led police on a high speed shootout from West Kelowna to the outer reaches of Vernon in the summer of 2012 has been acquitted of all attempted murder charges he faced.

Michael Ellis, 41, was however found guilty of a number of weapons and robbery charges relating to the events of July 31, 2012, that put pedestrians, motorists and police alike in harm’s way.

In a decision released last Friday, Justice Ian Josephson said that Ellis may have shot at a highway worker, rammed police vehicles and, at the very least, been aware of shots being fired at others by his passengers as they tore through the Okanagan in a series of vehicles they stole at gunpoint, but that doesn’t mean he wanted to kill anyone.

The closest Crown counsel came to proving Ellis attempted

to murder anyone who got in his way was when they presented to story of dog officer, Cpl. Gingras.

Audio for that harrowing encounter was played in court and can be found YouTube.

In it, Gingras attempted to stay on the road as Ellis rammed into his vehicle, and bullets were punctured the vehicle.

“In attempting to remove Cpl. Gingras as an impediment to his escape from police, it is clear Mr. Ellis was willing to imperil his life to an extreme degree,” said Josephson. “However, extreme recklessness endangering the life of Cpl. Gingras does not equate to an intent to kill. His intent was to escape police at all costs, even if those efforts resulted in the death of Cpl. Gingras.

“Thus, on the issue of intent to kill, a reasonable doubt arises and I find Mr. Ellis not guilty of these two counts.”

While he may not have decided to kill anyone during the shootout, Josephson rejected the

idea that Ellis was without any culpability.

The judge found he certainly wasn’t just a dupe, making rash and harmful decisions under the duress of one of his passengers.

That storyline was floated out

by Shawn Adam Wysynski.

Wysynski, who had already been sentenced to nine years in prison for his role in the shootout, told the court that he was the mastermind behind the shootout and Ellis was merely doing what he was told.

“I reject completely the submission that Ellis was acting under duress or that I should have a reasonable doubt in that regard,”said Josephson.

“The only evidence supporting that theory comes from Mr. Wysynski, which I reject as entirely false and unreliable.

Mr. Wysynski, after securing his position with his own sentence, was attempting to throw a float ring to Mr. Ellis, who was drowning in the sea of overwhelming evidence against

him.

“That evidence, which I accept, reveals that Mr. Ellis was a full and willing participant in this mad, misguided and extremely dangerous scheme to avoid detention by police.

“To that end, Mr. Ellis and Mr. Wysynski set out to terrorize innocent uninvolved civilians at gun point and were willing to endanger the lives of police officers or anyone else whom they perceived as a risk by discharging countless rounds of ammunition from a prohibited weapon at moving police and civilian vehicles from their own moving vehicle.”

Although it’s too early for lawyers to comment on their sentencing recommendations related to the convictions, Crown Counsel Murray Kaay asked that a Dangerous Offender assessment be conducted.

The delay was initiated by an accident in which a Toyota Tercel rolled down an embankment while coming off the overpass from the Connector headed in the direction of West Kelowna. Police say the driver of the Tercel, a woman, was taken to hospital with undetermined injuries.

“We’ll see what Lake Country council decides to do. We’re not sure what kind of extension might be necessary if they choose to go (to referendum),” said Gilchrist.

“The AAP outcome was a huge disappointment for sure but we are still confident the deal can be

Lake Country has indicated its preference is to take the request to borrow $2.6 million to voters in a referendum that would poll all residents, not just those that are opposed, as the AAP did. Lake Country council was meeting Tuesday night and the interjurisdictional team was expected to sit down Thursday to plan its next steps.

Despite the challenges, Gilchrist says it has been a positive negotiation from the start.

“CN has been a very good partner along the way,” he said. “They continue to be understanding that there are always unanticipated things that happen in complex agreements.”

Kelowna, Lake Country and NORD have a tentative deal to acquire the CN Corridor for $22 million with Kelowna paying $7.6 million, Lake Country $5.2 and NORD just under $2 million and the balance expected to come from other levels of government.

SILGA Resolution The Regional Board has approved sending a resolution to the Southern Interior Local Government Association (SILGA) convention this spring in Kamloops.

The resolution asks that the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure set up a formal process to lower the speed limit on certain rural highways. The request for a resolution was made by Central Okanagan East Electoral Area Director Patty Hanson regarding the increase in the speed limit on Highway 33 in the Joe Rich area from 80 kilometres an hour to 100 kilometres an hour.

Kelowna artist’s paintings chosen for stamp series Kevin Parnell Ten years ago, extremely sick from sudden hearing loss and not knowing what the future would hold, Kelowna artist Laurie Koss thought her lifelong dream of being a painter might be over.

Raising two children with her husband, Koss had just started to explore painting flowers without colour, when she was struck with Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSHL).

She was bedridden, had severe vertigo, didn’t know whether she had suffered a stroke or a brain tumour, and was unsure about her dreams or even if she would ever be able to paint again.

“That experience, laying in bed, wondering what life was all about, I

felt my dream was going to end and I never even had a chance,” said Koss, 52, this week.

“I always wanted to be a painter—a successful painter. As I lay there I thought I have nothing to lose. I decided I was going to bring my work to a gallery as soon as I was well enough.”

After doctors diagnosed her with SSHL and Koss began to recover, her mother— painter Mary Eagle— drove her to Kelowna’s Hambleton Galleries.

Owner Stewart Turcotte had told her he would have a look at her work, but wouldn’t be taking any new artists on.

“I had done about a half dozen paintings exploring flowers without colour,” said Koss.

“It was something I had decided to explore.

“I couldn’t even drive

so my mom drove me there and Stewart looked at them and looked at me and he just said there was something really interesting and different.

“He saw something in me. Had he not taken me on I wouldn’t be here.”

It took a full 18 months for Koss to fully recover from SSHL, although she lost hearing in one ear permanently.

But her career was off and running. Over the last decade she has become well known for her flower paintings, using shade and light to explore the intricacies of flowers, from carnations and begonias (her two favourites) to the pansies she was asked to paint for Canada Post.

This week, Koss, along with Canada Post, unveiled the 2015 Canada Post Canadian Flower Series Stamps,

featuring two original Koss works of pansies, this time using colour to show the depth and beauty only flowers hold.

More than 100 people jammed into the Hambleton Galleries Monday evening for the official unveiling.

A day later, Koss was remembering her start and where it all began, as her paintings began to travel around the world on stamps.

“This is validation, for sure, that I must be doing something right,” she said.

“I know what I do is really different that most floral artists. I use flowers as my subjects but I wouldn’t call myself a floral artist.

“I’m interested mostly in the light and the shade and the natural form because I find flowers incredibly beautiful.”

For gallery owner Stewart Turcotte, seeing Koss grow over the years to the point where she has received some recognition is something special and shows she is doing unique, original work he is proud to display.

“She has reached a very high level with her abilities,” he said.

“From the darkest darks to the lightest lights, she has a great critical eye. It’s the sensuous lines in her work. Flowers are female things and you can see the sinuous curves in her works.”

Another sign wine country folk are embracing the craft brewing movement is on the books for May. An event dubbed the Great Okanagan Beer Festival will offer three days for craft beer aficionados and fans to sip, critique, eat and generally enjoy the best that more than 40 North

American breweries have to offer.

And, while there will be loads of beer, don’t expect a “chug fest,” said Liam Peyton, the events manager at Gibbons, the organizer of the festival.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that—it’s just not what they do.

“We are a sampling event,” Peyton said.

“We’re not a chug fest—never have been,

never will be.”

Gibbons is building off the success of their Whistler beer fest, and the Okanagan edition will be in the same spirit.

At venues from Penticton to Kelowna the festival will sponsor everything from paired dinners, seminars, cask events of varying kinds and live cooking shows.

but on the Saturday of the festival, one outdoor tasting event to be held in Waterfront Park. That event is expected to bring in up to 2,500 thirsty patrons.

Peyton said it’s designed to capitalize on the natural beauty of the area, and that is what differentiates the Great Okanagan Beer Festival from the Penticton event, the Fest of Ale. That longstanding South Okanagan event is very popular, but Peyton said there’s enough appetite for two craft beer festivals in the valley.

Although Gibbons didn’t seek out Kelowna—Tourism Kelowna approached

then to replicate what they do in Whistler—they immediately saw a place for them.

“As soon as we put the feelers out, everyone was like, ‘this is so far overdue,’” said Peyton.

“Everyone is very excited.”

Craft beer, after all, has come into its own in recent years.

“Both the consumer and the producers really like this kind of event.

“Craft beer is different, exciting and creative…it’s also far more accessible these days.”

There will be 90plus beers to try at the sampling event on the Saturday. The festival has a range of craft

talent to tempt the taste buds and they’re proud to announce that amongst the exhibitors are Four Winds Brewing Co. from Delta, Tree Brewing, Bad Tattoo Brewing in Penticton, Bomber Brewing in Vancouver and Moody Ales from Port Moody, Barkerville Brewing from Quesnel and Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks from Aldergrove.

Local food vendors NC’s Gourmet Grill, The CrAsian Food Truck, Coast Lunchbox and Kelly O’s will also be on site to tempt the taste buds of thousands of festival-goers, although the timing of the event is designed so that

afterwards the guests will filter into the surrounding bars and restaurants to continue the celebrations.

Proceeds from the Main Event will go to Gibbons’s license holder, K-Billie Artistic & Athletic Development, a Kelowna based NPO whose mission is to support artist and athlete development with community based events and showcases.

Rotarians back trades training Tradespeople do more than just build houses, they help build communities. This is one of the key messages that a local Rotary club hopes the community will take away from its decision to support the new trades training complex at Okanagan College.

The Rotary Club of Kelowna has pledged $75,000 to the Bright Horizons, Building for Skills fundraising campaign supporting the $33-million renovation and expansion project currently underway at the College’s Kelowna Campus.

“Our club has a long history of supporting education,” says Club President Dennis Campbell. “It’s an important part of the culture of what we do. Be it through creating bursaries at the College, or supporting major projects like this, we’re very passionate about helping the next generation of students achieve their educational goals.”

“Trades are a key thrust in our economy,” notes Campbell, “and so it seemed only natural for us to support the training of these young apprentices. When you think about it, you can’t step out

your front door and go very far without coming into contact with something that a tradesperson has helped to build, wire, plumb, weld, and so on.”

“We had a chance to speak with students and instructors at the College and learn about the plan for the building,” says Ross Gilley, past-President of the Club. “And when we saw how the expansion will enhance space and equipment for students, we knew it was a worthy project. The College’s efforts will really elevate the profile of trades as a career path in the Okanagan, and we’re proud to support that.”

“The new trades training complex will help us be proactive in addressing the skills gap projected for trades and technical training in B.C. over the next decade,” says Jim Hamilton, President of Okanagan College. “It is truly gratifying for the College to see people and organizations from all over our region stepping up to support the project.”

“We appreciate the Rotary Club of Kelowna’s generous investment in our campus and our students’

futures.”

When doors open in spring of 2016, the three-storey tower will be a significant update for Okanagan College’s trades facilities, some of which date back to the 1960s. The complex will be able to accommodate over 2,400 students per year in trades programs.

Okanagan College is currently the second largest trades training institution in B.C. The provincial government has committed $28 million to the project. The $7-million Bright Horizons campaign to top up this funding includes $5 million for capital construction and $2 million for program and student support— which will allow the college to explore new trades programs in high demand, as well as create awards and bursaries for students.

Criminal charges have been withdrawn in the case of the 72-year-old Kelowna paper carrier who allegedly ran down a pedestrian and left her to die.

Upon review of all evidence, Crown Counsel decided there was insufficient evidence to prove Sharon Marlene Scott intended to leave the scene after the accident that killed an 83-year-old woman, so she will face careless driving charges instead.

Defence lawyer Joe Gordon explained to

reporters Friday that the new criminal charges would be withdrawn came as a great relief to his client, who is still upset to be facing careless driving charges.

“My client is traumatized and shocked… she has been crying every day since,” Gordon said.

Scott, at the time of the accident, was a contract driver for the Kelowna Daily Courier, and believed to be picking up bundles of papers Nov. 23, 2014.

Julie Gillespe was found injured, in the alley between the Courier and the McWilliams Centre

located at 580 Doyle Avenue.

It’s believed she was struck just minutes earlier, and was clearly suffering serious, extensive injuries. She was rushed to hospital in critical condition but did not survive.

Following Gillespie’s death, RCMP spokesman Const. Kris Clark said the senior was walking home at the time of impact, and she had been struck by a vehicle which failed to remain at the scene of the collision.

Police subsequently identified a suspect and affected an arrest Sunday night.

School districts face funding pressure again School trustees here in the Central Okanagan as well as across B.C. must be scratching their heads at their premier’s apparent lack of awareness about what’s going on in their schools and administration offices.

Last week, Christy Clark suggested school boards grab a step-ladder and start picking some “low-hanging fruit” to the tune of nearly $54 million over the next two years from district administrative costs.

Later, Education Minister Peter Fassbender clarified that school districts must find efficiencies to get administrative costs down to 6%, where they were 10 years ago, which requires 0.5% savings this year and 1% the year after.

The province should lead the way by showing where this cost-cutting should be made. Fassbender has been dropping hints, of consolidating administrative resources between school districts for one but stopping short of promising any grand overhaul of the how the school system is managed.

BC School Trustees’ Association president Teresa Rezansoff has been quoted as saying that Clark’s comments ignore the fact that school districts are already working together to save money and have been doing so for years.

Bulk buying, sharing services—many of these measures have been tried with more or less success, depending on the district and the circumstances. One area that has been discussed is the high cost of legal services.

CUPE has argued school districts could do more to cut arbitration costs, but clamping down on legal charges has been difficult given the large number of Freedom of Information requests.

Everyone hates waste but instead of making off-the-cuff comments, perhaps the premier and her education minister can show school boards exactly where the hidden cache of cash is located?

Kelowna big enough for micro-suites?

Relocating to the Okanagan has long been City a dream for Confidential many who live in other places— ALISTAIR like Alberta, WATERS Saskatchewan and even the Lower Mainland.

But their dream of living the “Okanagan lifestyle” likely doesn’t include shoehorning themselves into a 300-square-foot shoebox masquerading as an apartment.

But at least three local developers, and possibly more, are putting their money where their building sites are and planning “micro-suite” developments in Kelowna.

One is planned near the UBC Okanagan campus, another on Dickson Avenue, near the Landmark hightech office towers and the third just got a preliminary nod of approval from city council Monday for the corner of Ethel Street and Glenwood Avenue.

While the novelty of these toy apartments may result in this first crop selling—especially the ones near UBCO which could be seen as prime places for students looking to rent accommodation off campus but near school—if, as one city councillor fears, they become the wave of the future, I’m not so sure they will be the big hit some developers think they will be.

Kelowna has never been, and will not likely be for the foreseeable future, a place where density is so high living space becomes such a premium that size matters to such a drastic extent. Even the young and mobile need

enough room to stretch out.

People may retire the Okanagan to downsize, but they don’t come here to minimize. There are plenty of condos on the market offering a lot more space in what the city would call a “multi-family” buildings.

And that’s just for the condo crowd. Then there are people who want a house, a yard, a picket fence and a dog to roam the back 0.40. Something they may not be able to afford in Vancouver.

Kelonwa likes to think of itself as a growing city.

And it is. But it’s not New York, Tokyo, London or even Vancouver, places where micro-suites are in demand because space is at a premium.

Another reason for the less-is-more approach to this type of housing is the rising cost of property here. While the micro-suites proposed so far are slated to be rentals, the city is considering them “affordable housing.”

But with rents comparable to larger existing units, just how “affordable” will they be for folks on lower incomes?

Luke Stack earlier this week, with micro-suites being exempt from development cost charges, where is the city going to get the money it needs to help pay for the infrastructure needed to support these developments if there is a sudden flood of them in the near future?

It seems micro-suites are the developmental flavour of the month and developers here are starting to binge.

No fan of our politicians To the editor: I hope that most of you have noticed a new trend that the B.C. government has managed to sneak into the 2014 British Columbia tax form (BC428).

Or maybe, most of you were too busy to notice. And that’s exactly what the officials like to see happening in the general public— keep the public busy and worried enough so the details of their business practises will go unnoticed.

I noticed that the basic personal (deduction) amount for the year 2012 was $11,354. What was interesting to see for the year 2013 was that the amount was reduced to $10,276; a difference of $1078.

At first I thought that maybe they, the officials in charge who are supposed to be making decisions to benefit the commoners, made a mistake.

After calling the help line I was reassured that there was no mistake.

So maybe, I thought, the government of B.C. was in a desperate need of cash and needed to take a drastic action to short change us only for the year 2013.

A year later there was another reduction in the basic personal amount of $407 for the year 2014, which brought the basic personal tax down to $9,869.

What concerns me is that if they continue with this trend that we, the public, will end up with no basic personal amount in the near future, regardless of the country going through inflation or not.

Considering how we are unfairly being treated, I do hope that B.C. MLAs are paying income tax on their entire salaries and none of them have a tax free amount that we could only dream about.

I feel that almost every time politicians make decisions they do not have our best interests in mind. And almost every time a new individual is elected, he or she turns out to be another stooge representing himself and his corporate elites.

Somewhere, somehow we seem to fail.

But how so?

We feel honoured, as Canadians, that we can freely express our democratic rights during elections.

Most of us do feel deep down that we are doing the right things during the election camapigns by listening attentively to the new or old smiling faces telling us how great our lives will be if they get elected.

We put a lot of initiative into trying to understand which political party they represent and what it has done in the past for the betterment of humanity.

And despite the many failures the politicians or the political parties have made in previous years, we somehow once again fail to see the obvious and we re-elect them, again— the same or another political cult, sometimes with a different face on the front page representing old ideas disguised as new ones promotionally being sold to us with powerful words that always make

To the editor: With recent cell phones, home computer and government data breaches coming to light, I think we need to consider the privacy issues around smart meters.

I’ve read that data collected by advanced meters has the potential to reveal information about in-home activities such as: how many are in the home, when and for how long, to the kind of devices used (expensive gadgets, security systems, medical equipment, age and condition of appliances, etc), to how you spend your free time through movements inside the house ie: dining room (turn on TV) to the kitchen, plus when and where you work, are on holiday, etc.

This data, combined with other readily available information on you, can be used to create a profile on you for lucrative marketing purposes, before consumer protective standards are constructed for smart grid security or privacy.

At one end, utilities can promote energy 1services and products, and marketers can do

targeted advertising and at the other end, a divorce lawyer subpoenaing information, an insurance company interpreting the data in a misconstrued way, law enforcement determining if you were home on the night of a crime, landlords spying on tenants through utility accounts and criminals intercepting information to plan a burglary.

Plus there is the potential for Hacking: remotely disconnecting users, running up charges or causing an electrical malfunction, shut down, or surge (possibly frying all of your outlets and anything connected to them).

Power companies say “trust us” the information is encrypted. We have seen that any wireless system is vulnerable to hacking, from governments, to banks to movie studios. So now you have to worry about security, privacy and data mining issues. Just like Gmail and Facebook data, your privacy will not be preserved if you have a smart meter.

To the editor: In response to T. Martin’s letter (Gas Stations Are Ripping Us Off At The Pumps, Feb. 18 Capital News),don’t blame the gas station owners for the price of gas.

They are mandated by their masters who supply them with gasoline.

The gouging price of gas is determined by the “petro cartel” on a daily basis and agreed to through clandestine phone calls or other communication.

How else can every gas station of every brand raise or lower their prices in the space of one day?

Of course we are being ripped off.

Important cat vaccination advice for feline leukemia Cancer has always been one of the most challenging areas in both human and veterinary medicine.

One of the most common types of cancers in cats is Feline Leukemia, which is actually a result of a viral infection.

Luckily, with the right management this cancer may be prevented.

Feline Leukemia Virus (AKA FELV) is a virus belongs to the Retrovirus family.

Furry Friends DR. MOSHE OZ The disease spreads easily either by a contact between a carrier cat to unexposed cat, or from a carrier pregnant queen to her kittens through the placenta or in the milk.

The virus can not be transmitted from cats

to dogs, nor to humans.

The Feline Leukemia Virus attacks the body’s lymphoid tissue (part of the immune system) and may cause either Lymphosarcomatumors in various internal organs or leukemia (cancer of the white blood cells). The virus also leads to anemia and general weakness of the immune system, which

alters the cat’s ability to fight any sort of infection.

The severity of the disease depends mainly on the timing of the exposure to the virus, and the strength of the cat’s immune system.

The stronger the cat’s immune system is, the more likely that it will overcome the infection.

Kittens younger than six months of age are the most prone to develop persistent infection.

The disease starts to be

manifested by clinical sign only two to four years after the exposure.

This fact makes it hard to prevent the transmission of the disease. Unfortunately, your cat can get sick by being in contact with another cat that evidently seems healthy.

There are many different symptoms for the disease, depending on the location of the cancer developed. The symptoms showing will

My family and I have moved to the Okanagan recently. When one relocates, there are a lot of joys and hardships along the way. We moved to this charming location last August to take a call to Grace Lutheran Church in West Kelowna. We knew that God was calling us to come to this new and exciting place.

By answering this call, we expected to leave many good things behind. Having lived in Ontario for most of our lives, we knew that we would miss many aspects of our lives there. We deeply miss family members, friendships that developed over the years, geographic surroundings that were post markers to give assurances in our surroundings, trees and hills that we climbed as kids, and old school friends that we would meet on the street.

The hardest thing for us to leave behind were the church friendships that we cherished.

Moving from Ontario to British Columbia reminds us about the call of Abram and his family. When you read the biblical text of Genesis 12:1 it states, “The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.” Abram or Abraham as God changed his name later, according to his purpose, was well established in his home. God calls him to uproot and place him and his family in a place that he had never been before. Abraham trusted God to provide for his every need. It takes faith to follow God, and faith was a gift that Abraham had been given. When one embarks on a new journey in life, it requires a leap of faith. When we take that leap of faith from one place to another, we can experience a soft landing or a hard landing. When my family and I received the call to Kelowna, we wanted to have a soft landing. In order to do that, we had many people in our new church to help and direct us on issues of where to find a good mechanic, a doctor, a dentist, and of course a good school for our children.

These helpful directions eased our numerous transitions and gave us real peace of mind.

I have to admit, moving to a new location and travelling to our new home from Ontario, was a great adventure for our family. The drive across the Prairie Provinces and the mountain ranges to greet us in Alberta and B.C. was a journey to remember. Moving into our new home, arranging our furniture and

starting fresh was the most exciting part for me. For the first month, it felt like we were on vacation, and rightly so. Every evening we went to explore our new surroundings, and we enjoyed the scenic areas that the Okanagan has to offer. Life is wonderful when you first move to a new location, and you may think it is going to be a permanent vacation forever, but that is not the case.

When life settles a bit, things can change. There is a point that you come to grips that you are, “not in Kansas anymore,” and you realize that the, “rabbit hole,” you jumped into is deeper and more permanent than you had ever thought. You realize that the move is not a vacation when you discover that there is no return ticket. After a couple of months, when reality finally settled in, I found myself to be a little home sick. We missed our family, our friendships, events back home, and familiar surroundings; and this can be a challenge for anyone who moves into a new area. Relocating is easier for some and more difficult for others. At times, I would wake up in the morning, open my eyes and think what am I doing here? Was I crazy to make this move? At times it felt that nothing was real. I am very thankful to have good neighbours, yet even more thankful to be part of a church family that is helping us through this transitional time. I have learned that the church is an amazing place to meet new friends and to have fellowship when you are feeling alone. The church connects you to others in the community and helps you to feel that you are not alone. Now, when we receive a new face at church on a Sunday morning, I realize that this person maybe struggling in a new land and place. The Bible instructs us in Matthew 25:35, to be kind to strangers, “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” We practice this after every service in our church, and consider it to be an important ministry.

At Grace Lutheran Kelowna, everyone you meet has been a stranger here at one time. When I share my story with others, I am amazed that they have had the same experiences and feelings that I have had. So, don’t be afraid to talk to your neighbours in church, they might be newcomers to the Okanagan as well, and waiting for someone to speak to them, or they may have been here awhile

and would be able to guide you through the relocating process with some helpful advice, and you might make some new friends.

If you are new to the Okanagan area, I encourage you to go to a, “Bible-believing church,” where they practice hospitality to newcomers, visitors and strangers. I cannot bear to think what it would be like to be a stranger in a foreign land, not knowing anyone nor trusting anything.

I cannot imagine what it be like to live without faith as you experience this transition. It will take some time before I can call Kelowna my home, however, the transition has been a richer and fuller experience, and a softer landing because I have a new church family and God to Shepherd me. Remember what God says in Isaiah 43:2,19, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” I pray that the path that you are following will lead you to the Creator of all good things.

We meet for worship on Sundays at 9:00AM for Contemporary Service and 10:30AM for Traditional Service, and our children spend time with God at Sunday School, held during the 10:30AM service.

be related to the body system affected. For example, intestinal tumor can lead to vomiting, changes in the stool or weight loss.

The disease is diagnosed and confirmed by a blood test. Most veterinary clinics carry an in house test that can give you a result within only few minutes.

Otherwise the blood can be sent to laboratory.

If left untreated the infected cat will die within one to two months from the onset of the clinical disease.

Most of the cancers that are caused by Feline Leukemia Virus responds well to chemotherapy but only prolong the cat’s life by few months.

Fortunately, there is a vaccine available to combat this virus.

However, the vaccine is not risk free, as there is no vaccine that guarantees complete protection.

But since people started to routinely vaccinate their cats against FELV, the prevalence of the disease has been markedly reduced.

Please note that some of the feline annual vaccines combination do not contain the vaccine against FELV. Make sure that the vaccinations that were given to your cat contain that component.

If your cat got vaccinated with a vaccine that does not contain the FELV component, it can be given separately.

In other words, do not assume that your cat is

vaccinated for FELV just because it got an annual vaccine.

Kittens as being the most prone to severe infection should be vaccinated twice—the first vaccine at the age of eight to nine weeks followed by a booster three to four weeks later, and regularly as adults.

If you decide to adopt a new cat, I also recommend to first check the cat for the disease.

Especially if there are other cats in the household or if you are planning on letting your cat roam around freely outdoors.

If you do adopt an infected cat, it is not an immediate death sentence. This cat needs to get the same health care as any other cat, including routine vaccinations (for the other component of the vaccine, not the FELV part, because that will not be effective).

It is important to keep infected cats away from other cats. Infected cats are more prone to severe infections, a routine physical exam by a veterinarian is recommended at least every six months.

Please consult your veterinarian about more information on Feline Leukemia Virus and how to protect your furry friend from it.

Family INTERNATIONAL ADOPTION

Recently a group of families gathered at the EECO Centre in Kelowna to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

There were traditional red envelopes, beautiful silk dresses, and lucky

foods like long life noodles and good fortune oranges.

The adults chatted and visited while the kids played and made special Year of the Sheep crafts.

In some ways, it was a very typical Chinese New Year gathering, and in some ways very different.

This celebration was hosted by a group of Okanagan families who have adopted from China.

While most of the parents are Caucasian, most of the kids are Chinese-born Canadians who have come a long way to complete their

forever families.

The celebration is a way to honour the culture and history of our children, but it is also a way to normalize for kids the distinctive make-up of our families.

We seek to expose our kids to their cultural heritage, to embrace Chinese traditions, and make them part of our now global family.

And we look to connect in some ways to others that have shared similar experiences to ours.

Donalie and Jason Banman had one

biological son Josh when they adopted their daughter Jade in 1996.

International adoptions happened less back then as the Banmans traveled with just two other adoption-seeking Canadian couples to China.

The Banmans were living in Regina at the time and had a supportive network welcome them home. When Jade was two, they moved to Medicine Hat and Donalie experienced a less positive response one day.

day when this older man looked at our family and said, ‘Now what were you thinking?’” recalled Donalie.

“I was so shocked at first I didn’t know what to say, but then I told him that every child deserves a family and she fits ours perfectly.”

The Banmans moved to Lake Country when Jade was four. Although this small community wasn’t very culturally diverse then, it has been very welcoming.

In 2005, the Banmans travelled once again to China to bring home their youngest child, Lily.

It was a perfect time for Jade to also travel back to her country of birth and see the orphanage she used to live in.

“It was very interesting and I was glad to take it all in,” said Jade.

“It made me think about my adoption going but Lily’s experience was very different too.”

To an outsider, Jade’s

family might seem unique, but for Jade, it is simply her family.

“I don’t usually think about looking different from my parents,” she said matter-of-factly.

Each family attending the celebrations has had different experiences and come to this point in their journey their own way.

But we do share a common thread and being open to new cultural experiences and learning about our children’s heritage and traditions has only expanded our opportunities to celebrate more often.

The week started with a keynote address from UBC professor wmeritus Patrick McGeer, who discussed his research into Alzheimer’s disease and advances using aurin tricarboxylic acid.

McGeer, a Canadian physician, professor, and medical researcher has dedicated his life to finding the biochemical recipe to target the amyloid plaques responsible for causing Alzheimer’s.

McGeer has screened thousands of compounds to find aurin tricarboxylic acid and if his predictions are correct that it works in a spectrum of human diseases, it may become the most widespread drug ever developed.

McGeer, one of Canada’s leading experts of neurological disorders, hopes to introduce aurin tricarboxylic acid in clinical settings within a year.

The scientific investigation done by McGeer is a perfect example of why the university celebrates research, says professor Gordon Binsted, UBCO acting vice-principal, research and innovation.

“Our research has come a long way in 10 years,” said Binsted.

For the fourth time in the last five seasons the Kelowna Owls will carry the Okanagan’s colours at the B.C. 4A high school boys basketball championship.

The Owls, ranked No. 3 in the province, will take on No. 14 Prince George in the opening round of the B.C. finals next Wednesday night at the Langley Events Centre.

KSS qualified with a 73-51 victory over their local rivals, the Mt. Boucherie Bears, in the valley final on Friday night at RSS. It was the rubber match between the two schools, as the Owls and Bears had split the two regular season meetings.

Grant Shepherd paced KSS with 26 points and 14 rebounds, while Parker Simson chipped in 20 points and had eight steals.

In the most important game of the season to date, Owls’ coach Harry Parmar said his team came to play.

“The Bears are a tough team and we came out and played well against them,” said Parmar.

“It was hard fought, but the kids kept their composure and kind of pulled away at the end. It was a nice win.”

Despite a solid year in which they were ranked eighth in B.C. and beat a number of the teams who will go to provincials, the Bears don’t get a trip to Langley as Basketball B.C. allows Okanagan only one berth.

The Fraser Valley, for example, received six berths.

“It’s a tough way to end an amazing season,” said Bears coach Kelly Broderick.

“We didn’t play our best in the final, but the

guys really deserve to be at provincials. Basketball B.C. isn’t reflecting the best of the best and it’s frustrating.

“It was still an amazing year and we’re thankful for all the support we had.”

As for provincials next week, Harry Parmar said his Owls plan to take a calm and calculated approach.

“It’s going to one possession at a time for us,” said Parmar.

“The guys matured as the season went on and have learned to pretty much whatever style we need to.”

If the Owls defeat P.G., they would most like see Burnaby South in the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 12.

Oak Bay is ranked No. 1, while Yale is 2.

of the B.C. 3A high school girls championship.

At 7 p.m., the ninthranked Owls will take on Maple Ridge.

KSS earned a spot at provincials thanks to their win over NorKam at the valleys late last month at RSS.

It’s been a long season for Mitch Wheaton.

If all goes as planned, the Kelowna Rockets’ defenceman will be back playing with his teammates in the Western Hockey League playoffs.

Wheaton, who has battled injuries to both shoulders over the last three seasons, played in just four games in 201415 before undergoing surgery for a third time last fall.

Wheaton, who has been skating for the last six weeks, hopes to be cleared for contact before the playoffs begin.

“I’m maybe pushing thinking I can be back playing before the end of the regular season, but just getting back for the playoffs would make me happy,” said the 6-foot5, 220-pound Sherwood Park, AB native. “The guys are having an extraordinary year and it should be an exciting playoff run. Shoulder troubles have limited Wheaton to just 100 WHL games over three seasons and have cut into some valuable development time for the Detroit Red Wings’ draft choice.

Still, as frustrating as it’s been at times, Wheaton has done his best to remain focused on the future.

“There’s nothing I can do about what’s happened, I’m just staying positive and taking advantage of the time I’ve had to get back,” Wheaton said.

“I’m probably in the best shape I’ve been in for a long time.

“Not every day is a

good day,” Wheaton added, “but my coaches, teammates and specifically, my family, have really been important in helping me through this.”

Kelowna head coach Dan Lambert said when Wheaton does return, both he and the Rockets will need to be patient in getting him back up to speed.

“It’s one thing when it happens once, but to have it happen three years in a row is a tough thing for a young player,” Lambert said. “It’s good to see Mitch getting closer. Missing that much action, his timing is going to be a bit off, so when he does return we’ll have

to see where we’re at (on defense) and just work him back in slowly.”

Meanwhile, the Rockets are missing another key blue liner in Josh Morrissey who is sidelined on a day-to-day basis with a lower body injury.

Morrissey fell awkwardly after being checked in Saturday’s game against Calgary and had to be helped from the ice.

Centre Rourke Chartier remains sidelined with an upper body injury, but has resumed working out which Lambert calls “a good sign.”

Warriors battle South Ok rivals Frustrated Wheaton It took 58 games and some help on the last day of the regular season, but the West Kelowna Warriors are back in the B.C. Hockey League playoffs.

The Warriors, who finished fourth in the Interior Division, are in the process of taking on the first-place Penticton Vees in the opening round.

The series opener went Tuesday night in Penticton, however a final score wasn’t available at

press time. Game 2 goes tonight, 7 p.m., at the South Okanagan Events Centre.Games 3 and 4 will be played at Royal LePage Place on Friday and Saturday nights.

Penticton won the season series this season by a 5-2-0 margin, taking all three games at Royal Lepage Place, while the Warriors who beat the Vees twice at the SOEC, the only team to do that all season.

West Kelowna has

faced off with the Vees three different times in the post-season in their history, but for the first time in the opening round.

The Warriors, who grabbed the final seed in the Interior Division with a 6-2 win over Surrey on Saturday, were thankful for their first round opponent, as Penticton knocked off Salmon Arm in overtime the same night. The Silverbacks, who finished fifth and

one point out of the playoff picture, finished with 65 points which would have been good enough for second in the Mainland Division.

The Warriors also helped themselves by going 5-0-0-1 in their last six games.

The other Interior Division series has the Vernon Vipers taking on the Merritt Centennials.

Tickets are on sale now for Friday and Saturday’s games at Royal Lepage.

Provincials up next for local rep teams The Kelowna Fripp Warehousing Rockets will get a chance to defend their B.C. midget tier 1 hockey title.

The Rockets locked up a spot at provincials later this month by claiming the Okanagan Mainline league title, beating Kamloops in three games in the final.

After being upset in the opener at home, the Rockets won Game 2 in Kamloops, then sealed

the deal Sunday at CNC with a convincing 8-1 victory to capture the OMAHA banner in three games.

Kelowna will be on Vancouver Island March 15 to 20 as Comox Valley hosts the provincial championship.

Heat’s Klomps an allCanadian Katy Klomps has become the first student athlete from UBC Okanagan ever to earn CIS all-Canadian recognition.

The fourth-year middle blocker for the Heat was named one of top 14 women volleyball players in Canada for the 201415 season last week at the CIS awards banquet in Toronto.

It was the third CIS honour for the Heat since joining Canada West four years ago, as Emily Oxland made the allrookie team and Steve Manuel was selected as coach of the year for the 2012-13 season.

Klomps, a nursing student, has started in all four of her years for the Heat, and has also been named a Canada West all-star in each of the last two years.

Along with awards on her mantle, Klomps is starting to accumulate records. After four seasons in Canada West, she is currently secondall time in regular season career total blocks and blocks per set with 407 total blocks and 1.35 blocks per set.

This season, Klomps’ tallied 135 total blocks that sets a new Canada West record that Katy owns with Alicia Perrin, from Trinity Western, who also recorded 135 total blocks this season.

In career blocks in Canada West, Katy trails just Perrin, a graduating middle from TWU, who has 512, a mark Klomps could surpass next season with more than 105 total blocks.

Heat coach Steve Manuel is extremely pleased with Klomps’ selection to the allCanadian team.

Manuel said Klomps has put the work in the gym to be the player but she also works extremely hard and manages her time incredibly well to play at an all-star level and study nursing.

The end result didn’t exactly meet with the Kelowna Chiefs’ on-ice expectations.

Still, an early playoff exit aside, general manager Grant Sheridan said it was another good year for the KIJHL club.

The Chiefs bowed out of the post-season on Saturday night, losing Game 7 of their first round playoff series 2-1 to the hometown Summerland Steam.

“It was a disappointing finish, but we were really happy with the team, the players that we had here and the support from the community,” Sheridan said.

“All but one game was a one-goal game, so a bounce here or a bounce there and who knows ?

All in all, we’re happy.”

Under the guidance of first-year head coach Jason Tansem, the Chiefs finished third in

the Okanagan Division, before taking the Steam a full seven games in the division semifinal.

It marked the end of the junior B careers of five of the Chiefs’ players— assistant captains Chase Astorino and Dylan Jamieson, Nick Josephs, Ethan Rusnack and Carter Melnyk.

Off the ice, the Chiefs continue to make gains both in the stands— averaging close to 300 fans this season—and in the community.

“Our goal has been to see the program grow a little each year and we’ve seen that,” Sheridan said.

“The community and fan support is very good and we’re happy with the direction we’re headed.

“We have the philosophy of when we make a dollar, we spend a dollar to continue to moving the program forward, and keeping the momentum going.”

As is often the case, with graduation and the

The Rockets (23-125) finished fourth in the BCMML, while the Canadians (21-16-3) were fifth, six points back of the Rockets.

“GVC is a solid hockey club, and will be a great challenge right out of the gate for our club” said Rocket general manager David Michaud. “They have elite scoring up front and are a well prepared team, I’m sure it will be an intense fun weekend.”

The teams last met in the playoffs in 2012, with the Canadians winning in a two-game sweep.

For the first time in the program’s fouryear tenure in Canada West men’s basketball, a member of the UBC Okanagan Heat has earned a conference award.

Thanks to an outstanding freshman season, point guard Aldrich Berrios has been named to the Canada West all-rookie team.

is an extremely big step, and making the jump as a point guard is even more difficult due to the demands of the position.

Berrios was tasked with not only making those two jumps but he was also on-the-job learning the point guard position as a first year starter in the Canada West.

In his rookie season, Berrios was almost always on the court. He started all

20 conference games, averaging 34.7 minutes per contest, the fourth highest mark in Canada West.

The 6-foot-1 grad of Notre Dame Secondary was third in scoring for UBC Okanagan, averaging 12.4 points per game. His season high was 25 (Jan. 17 versus Mount Royal) and he led the team in scoring six times. His 3.1 assists per contest were tops on the team.

Deadly from long range, Aldrich finished the year with the eighth most made threes in the conference (46), shooting at a 38 per cent clip.

He also hauled in 3.9 rebounds a contest and 1.6 steals.

“Al was an outstanding recruit for us last year and we were excited when he came to camp last September,” said Heat coach coach Pete Guarasci said of his young point guard.

“Then due to injuries and other circumstances he was thrust into a very important role on this team and was asked to

do a lot more than I had planned.

“Yet he stepped up big time, gritted through some tough games and shone in others. He also stepped up in a big way off the court and in a leadership role.”

National rugby event coming to Kelowna Kelowna will play host to Rugby Canada’s recently implemented Canada West Rugby Championships.

Eight western teams will play back-to-back games at the Apple Bowl and Parkinson fields on July 30 and Aug. 2.

Four provincial sides from B.C.— under-16 Men, under-18 Women, under-18 Men, and the provincial women’s team—will take on the Prairies representative program.

Players will be selected from the tournament to travel to Ottawa in August and represent Canada West.

Canada West and Rugby Canada selectors will be in attendance in

Kelowna, observing games and delivering skill development clinics.

Kelowna was selected because of its attractive summer climate and convenience for both representative sides. Jim Dixon, CEO of BC Rugby stated: “BC Rugby is very proud to have been awarded the hosting of the inaugural Canada West Rugby Championships, and Kelowna is the perfect host city.

Vallido 4th in provincial wrestling Kelowna Secondary School’s Michael Vallido placed fourth in 74 kg weight class at the B.C Secondary Schools Wrestling Championships in Abbotsford.

Vallido won five matches and lost two in a large group of 19 wrestlers from around the province.

Vallido pinned his first opponent, Jesiah Fisher of DP Todd Secondary School, in the first period while up by a score of 7-0.

He then won by technical superiority over Alex Chiton of Sentinel Secondary School in West Vancouver by a score of 12-0. Michael’s third match of the day was against Alex Jinda, of Carihi Secondary School in Campbell River.

Vallido was up 6-2 with less than 30 seconds left in the match when Jinda scored a four point takedown. The match ended in a 6-6 tie but Jinda won due to the four point move.

Vallido regained his composure for his four match of the day dominating Thomas Green of Argyle Secondary in North Vancouver with a technical superiority win of 11-1.

Michael’s finished the first day of action with another win by technical superiority over Jesiah Fisher who he had wrestled earlier in the day.

The bout ended in the second period by final score of 16-6.

On the second day, Vallido was down 4-0 to Mitchell Keeping, of Esquimalt High in Victoria, but he managed to toss his opponent for four points to tie the match and win due to scoring the only four-point move of the match.

His last bout of the tournament was the bronze medal match against Alex Jinda of Carihi Secondary School.

The match went a full six minutes, with Michael losing by a score of 10-4.

Dieter lost the love of his life. Debbie, Brenda, Terry and Kelly lost their Mom. Ashley, Jamie and Duncan lost their Oma. Christel and Marte lost their sister.

Elke was predeceased by her parents at a very early age, and by her young son Ricky in 1988. In respecting Elke’s wishes she was cremated and there will be no service and no flowers please.

The family would like to express our sincere gratitude to all those involved in our mother’s care. A very special thank you to Dr. Steinruck and Sylvi for their exceptional kindness.

February 24, 1945 ~ February 24, 2015 On his 70th birthday, Morley passed away peacefully at the Kelowna Hospice House after a courageous and private battle with lung cancer. He is survived by his wife Maryann (nee Ambrosi), his children Don (Tammy), Gord (Lorie), Chris (Kim), and Tammy (Dwayne), five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Also survived by his siblings Alvin (Fae), Robert (Deanne), Margaret (Les), Stewart (Helene), sister-in-law Carol, and in-laws Andy & Mary Ambrosi, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Sadly predeceased by his parents, John and Isabel, and brother, Gordon. The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at Kelowna General Hospital, the Kelowna Cancer Clinic, and the Kelowna Hospice House for their care and kindness during this difficult time.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 1:30pm at the Winfield United Church, 3751 Woodsdale Road, Lake Country. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Easter Seal Camp – Winfield, c/o BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities, 3981 Oak Street, Vancouver BC, V6H 4H5, are greatly appreciated.

EK stands for Ernie’s Kids. You might remember well-known pub owner Ernie Thatcher and his wife Chris. Their two daughters, Carmen Justus and Tiffany Thatcher, have opened EK’s Grill. When you enter the restaurant, you will be blown away by the enormous, 5,000 gallon, salt water fish tank that was installed literally from top to bottom in the restaurant. It is the largest aquarium in a private establishment in B.C. and probably in Canada, with 70 beautiful tropical fish from all over the world.

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, executive chef Bill Justus (Carmen’s husband) has put together a large, fresh, no GMO, all-natural ingredient menu. Chef Justus smokes his own bacon, ribs and corned beef. He makes his own sauerkraut, burgers with no fillers, all dressings and seafood chowder on Fridays. EK’s Grill also makes its own ice cream with no sugar and offer a gluten free menu and a smaller bites menu (for senior and light eaters).

The restaurant is designed by families for families.

We shared the clam chowder, Ironman salad, double smoked Carolina ribs with cherry Jack Daniels BBQ sauce and heavenly hash ice cream.

Good thing we shared, as the portions are large.
