Mill rate to increase by two per cent tax increase yet to be determined

Rimbey town council has agreed to increase the mill rate for property owners by two per cent. The final tax bill for residents will be determined when the school requisition comes in which will be later this spring once the province passes its budget.

Council came to the decision at its Feb. 23 meeting after a lengthy discussion in which a higher and lower increase was discussed.

“I’m never in favour of anything more than 1.5 (per

cent),” said Coun. Jack Webb, who later agreed to go with the two per cent.

Mayor Rick Pankiw’s motion to increase the mill rate by 2.5 per cent was turned down unanimously by council.

The mayor said he had based his motion on the possibility that MSI (municipal sustainability initiative) funding will be decreased, forcing council to dip into reserves or cancel capital projects.

Coun. Paul Payson suggested a 1.5 per cent increase.

“We may have to tweak the budget to make it work,” he said.

Town moves ahead with capital budget

Rimbey town council is moving ahead with its $5.1 million operating budget, although the school requisition remains an unknown at this time.

The town will move $172,655 into its reserves, but plan to use this money throughout the year, plus an additional $2,000 from the existing $1.1 million in reserves for capital expenditures.

“Coun. Jack Webb, at the Feb. 23 meeting, said he is comfortable with that decision.

“If $2,000 is going to make or break the town, we’re doing something wrong.”

“The decision to use the money in reserves for capital projects is being “fiscally responsible,” said Donna Tona, interim chief administrative officer.

This year’s $1.495 million capital budget includes upgrades for the NE lagoon drainage ditch for $700,000.

However, completion of the project depends on municiple sustainable initiative funding.

Renovations at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre are to include three new HVAC units for $180,000, a stand by generator for $85,000, new arena LED lights for $50,000, an ice plant computer board for $15,000, a swipe key security system for $10,000 and $5,000 for nursery school renovations. Twelve thousand dollars has been earmarked for a new tread climber for the fitness centre.

Chemical room ventilation for $15,000 at the Rimbey Aquatic Centre, a police package for the community policing vehicle at $27,000, and $47,000 for upgrades to the RCMP building, yard and parking lot are also included in the capital budget.

Upgrades to the main water reservoir and pump house upgrades for $75,000 and a new water well study for $57,700 are also planned.

Thanks to a birthday gift from my son my list of excuses for not exercising has been shortened so severely it’s hardly even worth having a list.

He got me one of those Fitbits.

A Fitbit tracks your steps and has the amazing ability to track a whole lot of other stuff about you.

It can track the calories you eat, the calories you burn, your sleep, your heart rate and how many times you smile during the day.

Actually, it doesn’t track your number of smiles, but I’m sure that’s coming.

Of course, the trick is to figure out how to set it up, otherwise the thing is useless, and will sit forever in its box, a wealth of untapped possibilities.

Mine had actually sat in its box for several days. I kept moving it to a different spot on the kitchen counter, picking it up, turning it over, looking at it thoughtfully and then putting it back with a sigh of defeat.

I had no idea how to set it up and I wasn’t sure I even wanted to.

It wasn’t that I didn’t know about the Fitbit and what it could do.

My son had also got his sister one for her birthday, and, she immediately began to sing its praises.

“That fitbit is amazing,” she told me, a few weeks later. “Im in better shape than I ever was.” I look at her over my skinny laté. A skinny laté is what I drink when I’m with my kids because that’s what they always order. I always just say, “same,” to the person behind the counter, although I’m never too sure what a skinny laté really is.

It’s just that ordering black coffee seems so ridiculously old fashioned when I’m with my adult children.

Ordering a skinny laté seems younger somehow!

Anyway, my husband, who was oblivious to the fact that I was not sure the

Fitbit and I belonged together, asked me if I wanted to sync it with my iPad or my iPhone.

“Neither,” I muttered under my breath.

But of course he ignored me. Selective hearing!

And before I knew it, it was all set up, the little grey bracelet attached to my wrist and I was good to go.

My daughter and her family came for supper last night and I proudly showed them my wrist.

“You’re wearing it, mom,” said my daughter.

“Good for you! How many steps have you done so far?”

“Seventeen,” I said with brutal honesty.

Her drink almost spurted out of her nose as she burst into a helpless gale of laughter.

Actually, much to my surprise, by the end of the night I had bumped up those steps considerably. And I had never left the kitchen except to get the broom and dustpan

from the hall closet But, now my Fitbit and I are into day two of a cozy little relationship.

It’s tracking me as I sit in front of the computer taking absolutely no steps whatsoever.

Zero steps!

But, that is about to change. I am almost finished this column and I can go for a walk.

A long walk!

Wildrose MLA’s sign pledge to protect Alberta taxpayers from new tax

On Feb. 2, Wildrose MLAs signed a pledge to protect Albertaís taxpayers from any new tax, or increase to existing taxes put forward by the government before or after the next election.

As your Wildrose candidate, I applaud my colleagues on this effort, and look forward to signing the very same pledge.

This announcement marks a commitment that Wildrose will not only oppose any new

taxes put forward, but also propose to put the tools in place that are needed to spur economic growth, protect jobs and create prosperity.

I agree with our leader Heather Forsyth when she says that the worst thing you can do in a time of economic uncertainty is to raise taxes, and ask Albertans to pay more out-of-pocket for a government that already spends too much, wastes too much, and consistently fails to live within its means.

Itís not that we donít recognize that difficult decisions need to be made. We in the

Wildrose just donít believe that increasing or creating new taxes should be one of them, especially when Alberta already spends the most per-capita among the major Canadian provinces. We need to get this waste and spending under control before we even consider again tapping into the pocketbooks of hardworking Albertans.

So far we have heard the Premier and the government talk about raising income taxes, sugar taxes, sin taxes, gas taxes ñ even a Provincial Sales Tax! Now, there is no doubt that this sort of damaging talk

is hurting investment ñ but you can count on me, and the rest of our Wildrose team to fight to protect our economy, and keep taxes low.

Wildrose believes Alberta can do better. To demonstrate this, in the coming weeks my elected colleagues, candidates and other members will make several announcements committed to ëProtecting Alberta Taxpayers.í Weíll do our part to demonstrate that with the right leadership we can put Albertans first, keep taxes low, grow the economy and hold this government to account for its misguided spending

priorities.

In the coming weeks, Wildrose will release our own 2015 budget recommendations that will demonstrate how we can balance the budget, and at the same time protect our services, front line workers, and those most vulnerable.

The 52-year-old branch manager of ATB Financial in Rocky Mountain House said she is very excited about her win.

She noted that she received 50 of the 70 votes cast in Rimbey.

“Rimbey was very good to me. I am very grateful that I found very good people there who got behind me.”

Cote took the polls by a landslide in Rocky with 447 of the 509 voters casting their ballot in her favour.

She also won in Caroline with 41 votes, compared to 16 for Engen.

Engen, the former reeve of Lacombe County, who lives in the Eckville area won polls in Bentley (22 to 6), Eckville (114-31) and Sundre (21 to 18).

Cote is the great-niece of Helen Hunley, who held several cabinet positions as a Tory MLA and was Alberta’s first female lieutenant gover-

Manor resident says thanks to good Samaritan for helping out

A resident of Parkland Manor/Senior’s Lodge was pleasantly surprised last week by unexpected acts of kindness.

Sitting in his room at the manor, surrounded by pictures of family and friends, and with his oxygen tanks close by, Vernon Oak explained what happened.

“I can’t drive anymore because of my

eyes,” he said, “so I have to use a scooter. It is my only mode of transportation.”

As luck would have it, Oak was off to the Bank of Montreal to do some banking when his scooter quit.

No doubt, the elderly gentleman felt a moment’s panic as his scooter stalled in the middle of the busy street.

But, the mishap had not gone unnoticed.

Oak identified this person as Daniel Peacock, whom he pegged at about 22 or 23 years of age.

Peacock took it upon himself to push the scooter with Oak sitting on it back to Parkland Manor.

However, much to Oak’s surprise, Peacock took his act of kindness one step further.

Once he had pushed the scooter to the manor he de-

termined that it needed new batteries and took it upon himself to purchase and install the batteries. He then took the scooter for a little spin to be sure it worked, recalled Oak. “When I said I wanted to pay for the batteries he just stood there and grinned at me. “He said it was an advance Christmas present.”

The acts of kindness have left Oak feeling profoundly grateful and somewhat mystified.

“It’s probably one in a million (people) who would not take money for the batteries at least,” he said.

“You see and hear all sorts of bad things, but this goes the other way. That young man deserves some sort of recognition.”

Parent Link in Rimbey celebrates ten-year anniversary

Parent Link in Rimbey is a valuable family resource offering unlimited opportunities for little ones and their parents or caregivers to spend quality time together.

Parent Link Centres are a provincial government initiative which offers support for families, opportunities to play, parent education and developmental screening.

Co-ordinator Samantha Sansome encourages families to utilize the free program.

“It is a such a welcoming, wonderful, non judgmental atmosphere for families to come and learn and connect and just spend quality time together,” she said.

“It’s meeting a need for companionship and support and is filling a real niche here in Rimbey.”

Donnie Tafts, family service co-ordinator for Central Parkland Parent Link which includes Rimbey, Lacombe, Ponoka and Wetaskiwin, said there are 180 parent links in the province.

She noted the programs offered through the Parent Links are important to all families.

“It is an intense time to be a parent of a young child,” she said. “It (Parent Link) is a great resource for connecting families with their community and a great resource for helping parents engage with their children and have fun together. We very much support the parent/child bond.”

In Rimbey, Parent Link is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays as well as some evenings for special programs.

Marvelous moms is being held until March 30 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. This is a fun and informative discussion group and childcare is provided. For more info or to register call 403-843-2030.

On Wednesdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. the program L is for literacy will be offered until March 25. This is a drop-in program for children two and older and their parent/caregiver.

On Thursdays free unstructured play for parents and young children ages six and under is offered.

And on the last Friday of every month from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. a drop in program for parents/caregivers and their children is offered.

Rimbey Parent Link is held in the Provincial building.

After consulting with our community partners, I put a strategic plan in motion in order to meet goals we set by the end of the year. Of course, Rimbey and the three counties we serve have challenges. However, we have amazing people collectively working each day in an effort to make Rimbey and the area a better place to live.

Nowhere in my service have I seen such commitment by workers and volunteers to a community.

On February 24, I was invited to visit the Rimbey Christian School with executive members who volunteer with Rimbey and District Rural Crime Watch for an awards presentation. Last year, I attended an assembly at the Rimbey Christian School where they were discussing ‘peace’ when I arrived. Of course, ‘peace’ can mean so many different things to people. Just looking at those little faces as they gathered in the assembly was a testament of ‘peace’ to me. At the assembly, I mentioned how everyone should take a moment to be thankful for the blessings each one of us has and to take time to thank their parents, teachers, volunteers, etc. for what they do to make their world better.

This morning on my way to work, there was a huge sundog in the early morning sky. Like an oversized rainbow, it stretched from high above and ended smack dab in the middle of Rimbey as I drove east on Highway 53. Supposedly, there is a pot of gold at the end of every rainbow. I am not sure about this old tale. I have even panned for gold in the famous Bonanza Creek in the Klondike for gold at the end

At the end of November our club enjoyed playing bingo with the seniors at the Rimbey Manor.

Everyone who went enjoyed watching the seniors smile as we played with them.

Although I was unable to make it, our club enjoyed face painting and helping out at the Liberty Hall. I heard it was lots of fun and everyone enjoyed showing off their artistic skills.

On December 5 we enjoyed an evening filled with work, learning and fun. We started off with a public speaking workshop by reviewing the rules, giving tips and practicing impromptus. Then, we enjoyed pizzas, salads and desserts for supper. After supper Ian Giebelhaus talked to us about BSE and shared some interesting facts. Afterwards we had our monthly meeting and talked about various events.

FCC donated money and we bought a projector for our club. We are very thankful for the generous donation and look forward to putting it to use.

After we were done our meeting we enjoyed some games. We played soccer, hockey and enjoyed Christmas themed relay races. We finished our evening with a reflection session, sharing what we were thankful for.

I really enjoyed our evening together and I know everyone else did! Thank-you to the social committee for a very enjoyable evening.

Christmas Holidays. Unfortunately it was postponed due to the lack of snow. We are looking forward to setting a new date. As it is one of the highlights in the year for many of us.

During the first weekend of January we enjoyed some judging, a meeting, mad parts quizzes and trailer safety. We started off as a group and talked about trailer safety. We then split up and those of us with a learner or driver’s license practiced more trailer safety and our driving skills.

Meanwhile the others enjoyed ‘mad part quizzes.’ We then split into two groups and practiced judging. The morning was a great learning experience.

Afterwards we had lunch followed by a meeting.

Our Club has held our public speaking contest.

There were lots of great speeches and impromptus.

Everyone did a great job!

This year we had three presentations, two cleaver kids, eight junior speakers, seven intermediates and eleven seniors. For presentations in Intermediates 1st was Carter Eadie, and 2nd Tim Trenson. Presentations, Seniors Kaiden Eadie placed first.

In Juniors from 1st to 4th in order was; Isaac Stout, Amy Vandenhoven, Brooke Stout and Garren Skeels. In Intermediates from 1st to 4th in order was; Leah Trenson, Annie Christansen, Lacey Burrage and John Vandenhoven. In Seniors Ben Trenson in 1st, Sylvia Trautman in 2nd, Hanna in 3rd and Braeden in 4th. Great job to everyone!

Many of us also attended Bull Congress, set up for the women’s conference, watched a Rebels Game and participated in multi species judging.

As our year continues with lots of fun and learning, we look forward to upcoming events such as our toboggan party, farm tour, ski trip and much more.

Also, we have all been working hard with our 4-H calves. We are excited for the Show and Sale on May 10th and 11th. Don’t forget to mark it on your calendars! Good luck to those who speak at Zones Public Speaking!

Trautman to compete in CWHL championship Camille Trautman, goalie for the Calgary Inferno Women’s Hockey Team will travel with the team to compete in the Clarkson Cup in Markham, Ontario. The Canadian Women’s Hockey League tournament will be held March 4 to 7. The CWHL is comprised of professional teams from Calgary, Toronto, Montreal, Brampton and Boston and is the highest caliber of female hockey in North America. Trautman is ranked fourth overall in the league in her position of goalie.

A Rimbey athlete is off to Markham, Ontario to compete in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League championship for the Clarkson Cup. Camille Trautman, goalie for the Calgary Inferno Women’s Hockey Team said the team, who will compete in the tournament March 4 to 7, has a good chance to win.

“Right now we are tied with Montreal for second (in the league),” she said.

The CWHL is comprised of professional teams from Calgary, Toronto, Montreal, Brampton and Boston and is the highest caliber of female hockey in North America.

Many of the women Olympic team members from Canada and the United States play on these teams during the years in-between the Olympics.

Trautman has played hockey since she was fouryears-old and competed in the Rimbey minor hockey

system until she was 13.

“I started playing goal when I was eight or nine years old,” she said. “I loved it, it was fun,” she said.

During her early teens she played major midget hockey in Red Deer and then spent three years playing with the Red Deer College Queens while she was enrolled in kinesiology at the college.

Now 22, Trautman is in her rookie year with Calgary Inferno and is ranked fourth goalie overall in the league.

However, she says she finds the drive to and from Calgary for games and practices several times a week to be stressful.

“This will be my last year. Hockey has been good to me, but its time to start something new in my life and move on. And I do want to be on the farm.”

Trautman also enjoys ball hockey, biking and quading and would like to continue to play hockey at a recreational level.

Rimbey Fish and Game Association helps families reap the benefits of the outdoors

I have been blessed to live in some of the richest regions in North America where hunting and fishing opportunities were abundant around every corner.

If you have ventured down the roads less travelled, there was a strong possibility that you may have seen me either hunting pheasants in the Missouri Breaks in Montana, fly fishing for brown trout along Wilson Creek in Southern Alberta or stalking a majestic dall sheep in the Ogilvie Mountains north of the Arctic Circle. Being outdoors in God’s country gives my inner soul a chance to unwind from the everyday challenges of life.

Being a father of two amazing boys has its many rewards. However, it also comes with its difficulties.

In today’s world, our fast paced lifestyle presents even more challenges for parents with children – no matter what age they are. I never thought I would ever be the parent who allowed Xbox in my home. Well, so much for that theory. Now, more than ever before, it is imperative to show our kids the importance of being responsible for their actions, being honest, having integrity and being respectful. I find that when I take my kids fishing, it brings out the best in us and gives me valuable unfettered time with them. Being outdoors has so much to offer. Whether it is going on a hike near Abraham Lake or on a boating adventure at Medicine Lake, it brings us closer together. Or maybe it is the fact that there are fewer distractions, like my cell phone and the dreaded video games!

My parents instilled in me many values when I was growing up. My dad would take me hunting with him whenever he could muster up the time to get away. My grandpa would take me trout fishing west of High River in his retirement years. These valuable times together have given me fond memories of my childhood that will never fade and will always be cherished.

As a parent, I want for my kids what my family did

for me so I recently became a director with the Rimbey Fish and Game Association.

My beautiful bride, Amy, who also grew up camping, fishing and enjoying the outdoors, became the new secretary for the association.

Together, we see the value in this non-profit organization for our community.

In January, members elected a new president, vice president and many other new directors. Like any other group, it is important to seek new ways to improve what we are doing to meet the goals we endeavor to meet.

While maintaining the core values of those who served before us, but moving forward with new vision, it is wise for non-profit groups to adapt to change. So, here is my invitation to others in the community who see the value in our renewable natural resources all around us, such as our fish and wildlife and their habitat to join our association. There are many benefits to being a member.

Rimbey Fish and Game Association’s members manage Open Creek Dam Campground which is open from May through October. Open Creek has camp sites for mo-

torhomes, large or small, as well as a several tent sites.

It also has group camp sites with many amenities. Most of all, it has a stocked lake with pan sized rainbow trout to catch and breathtaking views.

Although the campground is open to the public, Rimbey Fish and Game Association members get a big discount on the camping fees. Most of all, it is close to town and gives us a chance to take a kid camping and fishing!

Rimbey Fish and Game Association also hosts a wide variety of outdoor activities throughout the year for young and old alike. If you would like to know more about the club, Rimbey Fish and Game Association is having a dinner banquet on Saturday, March 14th at 5:30 p.m., at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre which includes supper, awards ceremony, silent and live auctions, a dance and the chance to hear many fish tales and hunting stories. Another selfless achievement by a local Bentley lady has now been recognized.

On Family Day at the Bentley Museum, ninetyone-year-old Norva Landry was presented with a certificate of recognition signed

by Prime Minster Stephen Harper and Minister of Veteran Affairs Erin O'Toole, along with a commemorative lapel pin in honor of her service in the armed forces.

Landry served with the RCAF from November 1943 to December 1946 and was an army wife while

raising a growing family.

On hand for the presentation were family members including son Len Landry and wife Jean, daughter-inlaw Lorna Landry, granddaughters Shannon Landry, Dani Landry, and Kristy Landry, grandson Brady Landry and fiancé Alyssa Batten, friend Cecile Carroll (Turnbull) as well as museum volunteers and visitors.

Landry is living in Lacombe, but her heart is still in Bentley where she lived growing up, returning to the area in 1968 after military life.

She was very involved

in the community, captured local history in her artwork and photography, and was active with the local museum and with the school, reading and speaking and giving tours to the local children.

Landry is considered the local historian to go to if you want to find out about area families or any history of the area.

This government certificate is being offered from 2014-2020 to living veterans that were active during WWII, marking the 75 anniversary of significant milestones in the Second World War.

Bentley skins bonspiel sees local winners

Ten curling teams competed for cash money in the annual Bentley Men’s Open Skins Classic bonspiel on February 6 & 7.

Good sponsors added extra sociability and pleasure to the ’spiel.

All games were eight ends with money collected for each “skin” won. There were two evening draws on the Saturday and three draws to wrap it up on Sunday.

After teams played three games each, the top two money earners played off for the gold and silver placings worth $300, and the third and fourth place money earners played off for the bronze placing worth $200.

Gold finisher was the Bentley team of skip Art Dykstra, third Alex Murray, second Peter Mueller, and lead Everett Simanton. They ended up with winnings of about $400.

Finishing with a silver for $165 was the Bentley team of skip Norm Rieu; third Gary Muzylouski, second Ray Walker and lead Tim Feador.

Finishing in bronze place was Bentley’s team with skip Walter Lloyd, third Wes Hawkings, second Urs Mueller, and lead Harvey Noble.

The Sylvan Lake team consisting of skip Henry Couture, third Glen Dudman, second Bruce Cartwright, and lead Victor Gedde ended up in fourth place.

The Bentley club is now focusing on their upcoming Bentley “Las Vegas” ladies bonspiel scheduled for March 5-8.

The closing Town & Country Mixed Bonspiel will follow.

Government clamps down on legislation for repeat violent offenders Dear Editor: As you know, our government is working hard to keep our streets and communities safe across Canada. We continue to take concrete steps to strengthen the public’s confidence in the criminal justice system and to provide better tools to help protect Canadian families through strong and needed reforms.

Recently our Government announced that we are moving forward with much-needed legislation to better protect Canadians from serious repeat violent criminals - serious criminals who are released into communities across the country after serving only two-thirds of their sentence under the current system of ‘Statutory Release.’

We have all heard stories of criminals who go on to reoffend, sometimes violently. There are too many criminals who commit serious offences while on Statutory Release. Canadians cannot accept this.

This is why we will soon introduce legislation to ensure that repeat violent criminals will no longer be automatically granted statutory release after serving two-thirds of their sentence.

We will propose amendments to the Corrections and Conditional Release Act to seriously restrict statutory release for repeat federal criminals who have previously received a prison sentence of five years or more that includes a serious violent offence. Our goal is to see that the most serious criminals are kept off our streets and away from Canadian families for as long as possible.

These changes complement other tough-on-crime

actions that our Government has introduced, such as: Tougher prison sentences for sexual offences against children, serious gun crimes, impaired driving and selling drugs to children; Providing the courts with the discretion to end sentence discounts for multiple murders; and, Repealing the Faint Hope Clause which allowed offenders serving a life sentence with a parole ineligibility period of more than 15 years to apply for parole after serving 15 years in prison.

I am proud of our Government’s strong action to keep our streets and communities safe while ensuring that the rights of victims are placed over those of criminals. We make no apologies for our tough-on-crime stance because we know that law abiding citizens look to their government to help protect them from violent individuals, from dangerous criminals and terrorist threats. This is what our Government has done and what we will continue to do.

Wildrose Party to announce leader March 28 Edmonton: The new leader of the Wildrose Party will be announced on March 28. After hearing much feedback from members, constituency associations, and candidates, the Wildrose Party Executive Council met and voted unanimously to accelerate the leadership process.

“With no shortage of speculation into the timing of the next general provincial election, there's been a lot of energy and excitement from Wildrose members to elect a new leader,” Wildrose Party President Jeff Callaway said. “We’re a grassroots party and members have been clear they want a new leader in place before Premier Jim Prentice breaks his own fixed election law.

Our job as a party is to make sure the Wildrose is ready for an election, whenever it may be called, and that includes getting a leader in place.”

The 24,000 strong members of the party will have the opportunity to vote by telephone ballot over a span of 12 days, from March 16 to March 28, with the announcement of the results and introduction of the new leader at an event at the Sheraton Cavalier in Calgary on March 28.

Secure and unique PINs will be mailed out to the general membership beginning on March 9. To vote in

the leadership contest, electors must be members of the Wildrose Party in good standing for at least 14 days prior to the March 28 vote.

Those interested in running for the leadership of the Wildrose should email leadership@wildrose.ca for an application package.

Candidates are required to gather 250 signatures from members across the province and submit a $20,000 non-refundable entry fee.

The deadline to enter the race is March 7, 2015.

Interim Wildrose Leader Heather Forsyth said she's been overwhelmed by the incredible energy and interest among party members.

“Over the last two months, I’ve heard from thousands of Albertans wanting to get involved and fight for this party," Forsyth said. Stepping up to the challenge: The staff at Rimbey Elementary School literally stepped up to the challenge when they were each given a pedometer. February is “Heart Smart” month and we used the pedometer to count our steps.

Firstly, we calculated the average amount of staff steps in a week, which was 66 845, to encourage other Wolf Creek School Division school staffs to “Beat it.” A healthy goal per person each day is 10,000 steps.

THANK YOU FOWLER Lavina Fay Fowler of Rimbey, Alberta, affectionately known to many as “Pee Wee”, was born on February 6, 1942 in Camrose, Alberta. She passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Thursday, February 19, 2015 at the age of 73 years.

Lavina was raised on a farm in the Donalda, Alberta area. As a teenager, she moved to Daysland, Alberta to help Hubert Twitchell and his young daughter, Grace. Lavina lived there for over 40 years. In 2002, she was united in marriage to Bill Fowler and moved to the Hoadley area, remaining there until moving into Rimbey in 2011. Lavina enjoyed animals, gardening, playing cards, dancing, curling, bowling, going for a drive, and helping others.

Lavina will be lovingly remembered by her sister, Blanche (Sam) Allison; her brother, Darwin (Gloria) Batke; and her stepdaughter, Grace (Lou) Richard. She will also be lovingly remembered by her stepsons: Clifford Fowler, Gordon Fowler, Jim Fowler, and Harold (Jody) Fowler; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Lavina was predeceased by her parents, Irvin and Leila Batke; her life companion, Hubert in 2000; her husband, Bill in 2011; and a baby sister, Sharon.

A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Lavina’s Life was held at the Rimbey United Church, Rimbey on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Deborah Laing officiating. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer. A Private Family Interment will be held at a later date in the Hoadley Cemetery, Hoadley. ANDERSON FORBES W. ANDERSON Passed away peacefully in his sleep February 17, 2015 Survived by his wife of 47 years, Linda Anderson, his brother Bruce and sister-in-law Sharon Anderson of Rimbey.

His father, Forbes and his Mother Mary Anderson predeceased their son along with several Aunts and Uncles. At 70 years old Forbes had seen very few doctors and had an aversion to going to see one, but he hardly ever really needed one. He did have an operation a few years back and that was enough Doctors for him. He fully retired from his job at the Bakery and the crew he loved so much to work with a little over a year ago. I am sure he will find a scratch bakery soon and start making the bread he loved so much. Bread and gravy was his desert of choice.

Forbes started his working career as a plumber, pipefitter achieving his journeyman certificate shortly after his marriage to Linda in 1967. Working away from home for years he decided to buy land near Forshee in 1978 and that was the beginning of a long relationship with the farm, neighbors and many adventures. He started at the Co-Op Bakery in 1987 and worked there until he retired in 2013. Forbes’ love affair with food was a life long passion. Forbes also had a passion for the young people, helping with the Cubs and Scouts, working the horse shows of local clubs, playing with his nieces breaking his ribs or trekking up and down a gold rush creek in the mountains. The countdown is on for Fast Eddy Dostaler’s epic cross-Canada run

Time is getting short and the countdown is on for ‘Fast’ Eddy Dostaler and his epic run across Canada ... and back again.

On March 1 at 8 am, 26-year-old Dostaler set off from Clover Point; Victoria, BC, on a journey to raise funds, break records, and inspire an attitude of change. On that day, Dostaler started his 21,585 kilometer run to raise funds and awareness for both the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.

Starting in Victoria, BC, Dostaler’s trek will take him through Vancouver, Kelowna, Kamloops, Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec, Fredericton, Charlottetown, Halifax, St. John’s, hundreds of cities and town in between, and then all the way back again.

The real journey, however, started for Dostaler back in his school days, when he was assigned an essay on a Canadian hero.

Not having a favourite already, he was encouraged to do some research on the subject. That’s when he came across two great Canadians: Rick Hansen and Terry Fox. And he was inspired.

“They did such tremendous good and really put others before themselves,” says Dostaler. “I was so inspired by them. That stuck with me. I always knew I would do this run.”

He originally chose the Alzheimer’s Foundation because, he says, it didn’t affect him. He wanted to run for a cause that was outside himself, to help others, but in a way he could never understand. He would run in one direction across the country, from Victoria to St.John’s, to run for the disease which was on the verge of being cured. He could be a part of pushing it over the edge.

Then his grandmother was diagnosed with the disease, and the run had a personal lift.

The decision to make the second part of his journey a fight for breast cancer came through a close bond with his university mentor. “I went to go and tell a professor of mine, Dr. Tom Owen (about the run),” says Dostaler, “then found out he passed away. He died of lung cancer.” The run wouldn’t be news to the professor, however, they had discussed the idea of doing great things for research before.

“He told me that if I was ever going to do anything big, do it for breast cancer,” says Dostaler, noting that the foundation was making great strides. “So I planned out my run and doubled it up and made sure it would go just under a year.”

And that was how the passion and vision grew for Mr. Eddy Dostaler. It started with a spark, an inspiration, and was fanned by the love and support of those around him. Even though, according to Dostaler, his mother is quite convinced he will be eaten by a bear along the way And it’s already been a long journey just to get to where he is today. Born from an inspiration back in high school, Dostaler has been working tirelessly gathering support, deflecting naysayers, contacting media and sponsors, all while training his body for this remarkable journey. local news has been talking about Dostaler for close to a year now, with stories on CBC.ca, CFJC TV, 1075 KISS FM, Kamloops This Week, and Penticton InfoTel. He has also recently hit the media circuit in Calgary and New Brunswick.

“This has been getting the best media coverage,” Dostaler says. “It puts it on my shoulders not to fail.” And failing, he says, is just not an option.

During his journey Dostaler will be stopping in each province and hosting 24 hour runs to both help to raise awareness and to meet and greet the public, giving each and every Canadian the chance to run alongside ‘Fast’ Eddy and be a physical part of change. And if you miss him going in one direction don’t worry, he’ll be coming back through on his return trip.

“It hasnít hit me yet,” he remarks. “I don’t think of it as running across the country twice. I think of it as getting around that next corner. Or there’s a straight stretch, lets make it to the end of that stretch.”

Dostaler will be doing this run for Breast Cancer and Alzheimer’s unassisted. Pushing all of his gear in a small jogging type stroller which he has named ‘Aurora’, he will be travelling through the wide and varied regions of Canada on his own.

“Where the bears are,” he laughs.

But unassisted, Dostaler says, doesn’t mean he is unsupported. “I’ve got a great team,” he explains. “I wouldn’t be able to do any of this without them. They are all busy with their own stuff and they still work hard for me. They are vital to this run.”

As well as his close circle of support, Dostaler is also thankful for the great companies who have stood up in support of this run. These include: Hoka, Thompson Rivers University, BodyGlide, CEP, Runner’s Sole, Superfeet and The North Face, with more in the works.

While the time is drawing near, Dostaler is filling his time doing talks at local schools, holding interviews, speaking at local events, reaching out to cross country media, and, of course, doing a little bit of running while he’s at it.
