Angel Magnussen is a young woman of many talents. The Port Alberni teen, who will turn 19 on March 16, has raised thousands of dollars for the Variety Club, and now sews special blankets that go to sick children around the world.

She calls it “wrapping sick kids in a hug.”

One of the things Angel loves to do in her Hugginz By Angel studio, which houses her two-year-old charitable business, is dance. It’s something she shares in common with television talk show star Ellen DeGeneres.

Cheryl sent a special cat lovers’ blanket to Ellen last year, but never received a response. This time Angel’s friend Curtis Hargrove hopes to deliver another cat lovers’ blanket directly to Ellen.

Hargrove met Angel in 2012 at the Canadian Football League Grey Cup in Toronto, where they were both up for a $100,000 Game Changer award (which Angel won and donated to the Variety Club). He is renowned

in Alberta for running for charity—from raising $50,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation to $250,000 for Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton.

Last year Angel called him up and asked him if he would go to her Grade 12 prom with her.

“I said yes,” Hargrove said from Edmonton. “I helped make a couple of blankets. I got to see how she affected the community; how many people support her in Port Alberni.

“You see the respect from people. For a girl of 18, she’s accomplished so much at that age.”

and ask the talk show host to come to Port Alberni and help Angel make her charitable blankets, he decided to do something about it.

Hargrove has set up Hugginz Highway, and plans to run from Port Alberni to Burbank, Calif., to personally deliver a blanket to DeGeneres if he can.

“Angel’s been trying to get Ellen’s attention. She doesn’t even want to be on the show, she just wants her to come and sew blankets with her and dance,” he said.

“To me, Angel’s one of the most selfless people I’ve ever met in my life.”

Hargrove will be in Port Alberni on May 30 for the Wings For Angel dinner dance and auction fundraising event; on May 31 he will depart for Burbank, 2,100 kilometres away.

He plans to run 50 kilometres a day until he gets there, in approximately 50 days. He will raise money for Hugginz by Angel, which is in the process of becoming a registered charity along the way.

“Running’s always been a passion of mine,” he said, which is why he uses it as a way to raise funds.

“Angel’s very happy that Curtis is going to carry the blanket to Ellen and ask her to come sew with her in her studio,” Cheryl says of Angel.

“She just wants Ellen to help her help sick kids.”

Wings For Angel is a fundraiser to help the Magnussen family build a larger Hugginz studio for Angel—the one she has now was provided by Telus employees—giving Angel, who lives with Down Syndrome, autism and a few

“She’s at an age where all her friends are moving out and living on their own and yet she can’t do that,” says Cheryl.

“She needs care 24/7; she wants to live at home but feel that she has her own space as well.”

Before her fundraiser can happen, though, Angel is facing her fourth—and Cheryl hopes her final—jaw surgery in March.

This time doctors will take a bone graft from her hip to build up her jaw. This means Angel will be back in a

wheelchair for awhile as her hip recovers from the graft.

“Definitely this will be a hard two months ahead with the reconstruction, wiring and tube feedings,” says Cheryl.

“But she is so positive that she can do it and will be able to make it through and keep a happy heart.

“I wish I had her courage and wisdom and faith.”

Angel will take a couple of weeks off to heal, then will be back in the Hugginz Studio to sew blankets.

“Angel will nap in the studio a few times each day while she

recovers, but will sew between rests as helping her kids is most important to her,” says Cheryl.

of the way up the mountain-side. Chris is cross-ditching the road to minimize erosion.

But he is doing it with gentle dips in the road so that vehicles can drive through them easily.

This allows people to get further up the road and access the trails up there.

Speaking of trails, veteran trail-builder Harold Carlson is working to put a trail off this section of road up to Mount Adder. I’ll keep you posted on that.

The recreational opportunities in the AVCF are mainly focused on trails.

The Alberni Valley Community Forest (AVCF) has been quietly operating in the Alberni Valley for a little over 7 years in two locations around Sproat Lake. The Sproat Block is a 3000 ha property up the hill behind Sproat Lake Landing (formerly known as the West Bay Hotel). And the Taylor Block is 3400 ha and block runs up the slopes of Mount Klitsa, and extends to Sutton Pass on the south side of the Taylor River. Although one of its objectives is to manage the land to produce timber, another is to accommodate and even encouraged.

The new manager, Chris Law, has a fresh perspective that is far more supportive of the recreational on environmental aspects of the AVCF. In fact, it was he with help from some of his friends who built the existing trail network there.

So I called him up and we had a chat to see what he is doing for outdoor recreation.

So far during his tenure Chris thinks that by far the most people that use the woodlot for recreational purposes are residents from Sproat Lake hiking the trails; to be expected as it is close to them.

Quads are there too, but they stick mainly to the logging roads.

And also there are a few trail bike riders.

These motorized bikes are quiet and people take them on the trails. They have no seat.

After that there are a few mushroom pickers in the fall and some commercial Salal pickers in the

It’s named after an early settler who built a home on Weiner bay before it was called West Bay. The trails are reasonably well marked, and there are maps at the start and along the way.

HINT: Take a photo of one of the maps on either your phone or digital camera when you start your walk so you have a copy of the map with you.

A Brighter Note

In 2002 Jamie Lee Curtis famously posed for a magazine to expose what she really looked like. The mother of two appeared make-up free in a sports bra and spandex shorts, proudly displaying a softer, thicker physique rather than the perfect hard body she was known for.

She was 43-years-old at the time and felt compelled to reverse some of the harm she and her profession had subjected a trusting public to with it’s constant parade of impeccably airbrushed photos.

She wanted women to discover that we shouldn’t try to look like celebrities and models because even they didn’t look the way they were presented.

After the unforgettable photograph was taken, 13 people worked their magic over the next three hours to transform her into the flawless movie star we were familiar with for the pages that followed. The enlightening pictorial made a powerful statement of truth to people everywhere.

A couple weeks ago it seemed like Cindy Crawford might be doing something similar when a shockingly untouched image of her began circulating the internet along with a story about it being part of a magazine feature designed to empower women.

However, it quickly became unclear as to whether she intended it to be seen publicly or it was leaked without her permission. Regardless, the imperfect body shot of her wearing lingerie was out there for anyone to

criticize or praise.

Also a mother of two, Cindy Crawford was 47-years-old at the time the picture was taken, and in contrast to the one of Jamie Lee Curtis, she was fully made up and only needed some digital tweaking to smooth out her visible flaws and make her look the way we’re accustomed.

I shared the photo with friends and posted it on Facebook asking people if they’d rather see real pictures like this in the magazines, or the thoroughly altered images of perfection that have become the norm. The reaction was mixed.

The vast majority of women said they’d prefer to look at un-doctored photographs, and many felt that seeing this iconic fashion star in a more honest state helped loosen the expectations they had for themselves measuring up to an unattainable standard of beauty.

Some of the men agreed and added that the excessive use of trickery before, during and after a photo shoot wasn’t lost on them.

Others, though, were revolted and one male friend responded with:

“I just threw up a little.”

If that’s the immediate reaction an incredibly gorgeous super model gets from an authentic picture of herself, what chance do the rest of us have?

In this day and age most people realize what’s involved in attaining the flawless images we’re used to seeing, but is that knowledge actually alleviating some of the unhealthy and unrealistic pressures we place on our own aesthetics?

I think it’s helped slightly, but as a society we continue to be negatively affected.

According to the Confidence Coalition and the Canadian Mental Health Association, only two percent of women think they are beautiful, one out of four college aged women has an eating disorder and 90% of girls say they feel pressured to be thin from what they see in the media.

Even without the issue of airbrushing this makes sense when we consider the average North American woman is 5’4” and weighs 166 pounds, yet the average model is 5’11” and weighs 117 pounds.

With the growing interest in nutrition, diets, supplements, natural health food products and the health food industry, food has been broken down and categorized into nutrients instead of whole foods and meals. If you want to spend money in a health food store, the best “health food” is at the local farmer’s markets or produce section in the grocery store, and this is a good place to invest your food money for better health.

Supplements in a bottle will not improve poor lifestyle habits.

In recent years, the “slow food” movement is bringing attention back to making good, healthy food important and is a backlash to the recent epidemic of our fast food and quick-fix culture.

With the realization

improved health through better eating, look to the good “real food” abundant around us in the Alberni Valley and even consider growing your own edible garden.

To go one step further, cycling, walking, taking public transit or car-pooling with a friend will help to get you moving to the farmer’s market or grocery store with less of an impact on the environment. Each step is an investment in the future.

that local, healthy food equals healthy lifestyle, there is a growing demand recently for more local food shops, farmer’s markets, variety with more options for produce in grocery store, homegrown gardens and hobby farms.

Visiting local markets and purchasing food grown in the region may cost slightly more, but feels good and is an investment in your health and environment. It has a win/win effect on the local economy and long-term agriculture sustenance for the area.

To strive for

A few celebrities might offer bona fide images of themselves, and there will always be unauthorized shots posted on the internet, or unflattering ones taken by the paparazzi – but until there’s a reputable magazine with a person of prominence leading a mission to present more truthful pictures, I don’t think attitudes will change much more than they have.

This is where someone like Oprah Winfrey could easily make a positive difference. Her popular self-titled

magazine is heavily photo-shopped from cover to cover.

What would happen if she put a stop to that and started representing all kinds of people, including herself, without post-production tampering? Would sales drop or increase? Being a billionaire megastar intent on making constructive improvements to humanity, she’s in an optimal position to take the small risk and find out.

If my friends who prefer real over fake prove to be a good reflection of what the general public wants,

her sales would increase and other magazines would follow suit.

For a woman who has personally suffered the ill effects the media has played on her own image, this seems like an amazing opportunity for her to reverse some of that damage, and help boost the self esteem of millions.
