Inmates file claim over lack of programs Vikki Hopes BLACK PRESS

Two inmates at Mission and Matsqui institutions filed a notice of civil claim recently in B.C. Supreme Court, saying the lack of adequate programming has violated their charter rights, including their being considered for lower-security prisons and their chances for early parole.

The claim was filed against Correctional Service Canada (CSC) by Wesley Devries, currently incarcerated at Mission Medium Institution, and Yong Long Ye, in Matsqui Institution in Abbotsford.

Devries is serving a 34-month sentence, which began in Septem-

ber 2013, for 13 charges of fraud and theft involving women he was dating.

Ye was sentenced in December 2008 to 18 years in prison after pleading guilty to three charges – conspiracy to produce and export methamphetamine, conspiracy to import and traffic cocaine, and conspiracy to launder the proceeds of crime.

Their civil claim states that inmates’ participation in programs is considered when assessing their security classification, which, when lowered, can result in their being transferred to a lower-security prison.

Programming is also taken into account when assessing whether

a prisoner is eligible for early parole, the claim states.

The types of rehabilitation programs available vary from prison to prison but can address issues such as substance abuse, sexual abuse and violence prevention.

The documents state that no resources were available for Devries for counselling or psychiatric care related to his underlying health conditions.

He is on a wait list for other programs and has been unable to transfer to a lower-security institution.

Devries has just seven months left before his statutory release. “(He) will have spent his entire custodial sentence without any

programming being made available to him and no assistance in helping him cascade to a minimum-security institution,” the civil claim states.

The documents state that Ye, too, has been eager to take programs, but, to date, has been denied access.

Ye applied for early parole but was denied in November 2012, with the parole board concluding that there were grounds to believe that Ye, if released, would be “likely to commit an offence involving violence.”

The civil claim seeks an order requiring CSC to provide “reasonable access to all inmates with respect to programming.”

None of the allegations has been proved in court, and the CSC has not yet filed a response.

Lawyer Chris Terepocki said this litigation is unique because it is funded by the inmates themselves.

Jason McGown, head of the inmates committee at Mission Institution, started the process.

He contacted other inmate committees and several indicated their support.

“It is incredibly frustrating for those of us that recognize that we do need help and want to participate in programs, yet, for whatever reason, some do not qualify and are basically stuck until they reach their statutory release date.”

“Oh my gosh, it was just wonderful. It’s amazing to see how people come together. It’s truly an amazing story.”

She said since his cremated remains were rediscovered, the family has begun sharing stories about Pickersgill and pulling out old family photo albums.

The ceremony included a minute of silence, prayer, the laying of a wreath (Pickersgill was a veteran) and stories about the late teacher.

At the end, his cremated remains were placed into the earth as friends and students laid flowers around his final resting place.

During Friday’s service many kind words were shared about Pickersgill.

Maguire said, “He was highly respected, knowledgeable, patient. He caught me drawing a picture of him in class but that’s another story… He made such an impression on me and what he taught me has stuck with me to this day. There’s not a sentence that I’ve composed or an essay I’ve had to do that I don’t look for misplaced modifiers or prepositions at the end.

“He taught us respect and treated us respectfully.”

Cecchini thanked all of her uncle’s students.

“Apparently he was much appreciated and fondly remembered by you, his former students; a family where he could be himself.

Many thanks to all of you for participating, back then in the classroom and here today.

Walter would be proud.”

Mayor Randy Hawes introduced the issue at the Feb. 16 meeting. He explained he heard there have been delays of up to an hour for service.

BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS), which operates BCAS, has just initiated a review of deployment and demand and will be undertaking a study in the spring to look at population projections, including the aging population, and where calls are coming from.

The median response times for non-code 3 calls in Mission were 12:02 minutes in 2012, 11:12 minutes in 2013, and 12:02 in 2014.

Changes were made to the province’s Resource Allocation Plan (RAP) in 2013 to provide faster response to patients with critical injuries, said Jensen. “We wanted to only respond with code 3 when it truly makes a difference to the outcome of patients.”

Speaking to the News Tuesday, BCAAFC executive director Paul Lacerte also struck a positive tone.

Patrick, owner of Kids Physio Group, was in Mission Thursday to talk about the trials, tribulations and the thrills of creating your own company.

She was invited to speak at a luncheon hosted by the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Business and Professional Women’s club of Mission.

“Almost 10 years ago I took a giant leap of faith and left a very stable job,” said Patrick, who made the decision to open her own company providing physiotherapy services for children.

It was a rocky beginning for the young entrepreneur.

“I had never taken a business course,” she told the crowd.

The Mission Friendship Centre (MFC) is making strides towards addressing concerns raised last year about the management of the facility, members of its parent organization told a group of stakeholders Monday.

Last year, the MFC was placed “in difficulty” by the British Columbia Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres (BCAAFC) after complaints of mismanagement and nepotism, and public protests outside the centre’s First Avenue building.

On Monday, BCAAFC staff told representatives from a variety of funding agencies that they have been satisfied with how the MFC and its governing board have responded to the complaints.

They noted that several new committees were struck, including ones responsible for human resources and financial matters, to address the problems cited by complainants.

The BCAAFC’s Lisa Mercure also said the organization did not find wrongdoing with the friendship centre’s hiring practices, although she said a larger staff was needed both to provide more services and to lessen any percep-

dent that the special agreement now in place between the BCAAFC and the MFC will run its course in the near future.

“We have to be sure we’ve got the centre to a place where we are comfortable that all of the questions have been answered,” he said, expressing hope that the centre had now reached a turning point where it can focus on addressing the needs of the community. “What we want them to do is put all their time and energy into building capacity to serve clients.”

None of that however, satisfies Kristopher Eriksen, a former volunteer who was banned from the centre and who has been behind many of the complaints against the MFC. Eriksen maintained that the issues with the MFC will not be addressed until there is a change in leadership.

He also denied that he had turned down an invitation to meet with BCAAFC and MFC staff, and said the BCAAFC’s complaint process is flawed in not dealing with those who raise concerns about centres.

“I’m still willing to meet,” he said. “We have to sort through this.”

While she faced many bumps on the road to success, Patrick said networking events, like the luncheon, were of key importance.

“I have been to countless networking luncheons over the years now and have always been inspired PATRICK by somebody who said just one thing to help shape my business.”

She warned the crowd that rapid growth isn’t always a good thing. The constant changes needed to her work

Patrick also said she made an error by branding herself, instead of the company. As the business kept growing, new clients all wanted to see her, rather than the other physiotherapists at her company.

Eventually, Patrick realized she had to step back and run her business as well as providing physio.

Her first step was to create a systems manual.

“If you’re looking to expand your business and have multiple locations then you need to have a systems manual in place so you don’t have to be there.”

Again, it was networking that helped her find a mentor to help complete the manual.

Patrick suggested that new business owners connect with a mentor to learn from other, more experienced business people.

More patrols, a larger presence in the downtown core and consistent response times were the main concerns expressed at a Mission RCMP public forum held last week.

More than 200 people came to the Leisure Centre to ask questions of Mission RCMP Insp. Ted De Jager.

The event was designed to allow the public input in the process to set 2015 policing priorities.

At times, people were lined up four and five deep waiting for their opportunity to speak.

One subject that kept coming up was dealing with drug addiction and mental health issues in the downtown core.

“We’re not going to find an immediate solution to something that’s going to take a long time to resolve,” explained De Jager.

He said homelessness and drug addiction is not something police can solve by themselves. The whole community has to be involved in finding a solution.

Mounties search for wanted man Mission RCMP are asking for the public’s help in locating 24-year-old Dylan Gropp, who is wanted on a warrant for criminal harassment.

Police say Gropp is from Mission and are cautioning the public not to approach him if they see him.

Gropp is six feet tall and weighs about 180 pounds. He has long brown hair, a full beard, and brown eyes.

According to police, he is associated with a white four-door 1997 Honda Civic with B.C. licence plate 060 LNN, and a black Chevrolet Blazer pick-up with canopy with expired B.C. license plate AD 861C. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Gropp is asked to call their local police department or call Crime Stoppes at 1-800-22284770.

“Do you have plans on having regular foot patrols in the downtown area?” asked Jamie Hayes of the Mission Downtown Business Association.

“Yes, we are,” replied De Jager. “Last year, since downtown was one of the priorities, one of the initiatives that we had that was supported by the community was the downtown foot patrol,” consisting of police officers and auxiliary members.

Other criticisms included a lack of response by police to reports by Block Watch or other calls.

De Jager explained that not all calls can be addressed immediately.

“Our call response, like any police force, is based on priority,” he said, adding that violent crime will always have a higher priority than property offences. Calls are prioritized by the RCMP’s operational communications centre in Chilliwack.

“Bear in mind that we have limited resources. We have to find the balance between a police officer always coming – because that is the most expensive way to address the problem – and the whole community being involved.”

Domestic violence, property crime and problematic youth were also discussed.

Morphine seized at Mission Institution Contraband, including morphine, was seized at the medium security unit at Mission Institution on Tuesday.

The total estimated institutional value of the seizure is $6,305.

While many people asked questions, several others voiced their approval of the work the police have done.

Following the meeting, De Jager continued to answer questions on a one-on-one basis. He said he was pleased with the number of people who took an interest in the forum.

“We were certainly prepared for any type of questions that were going to come. That’s the whole point in having this – to get a very clear picture of what the community concerns are. That’s going to help us set our priorities for the next year.”

One initiative he wants to discuss is setting up an advisory committee, similar to police boards that municipal forces have.

He also wants to address the notion of visibility in the community.

While he believes visibility is important, it has to be balanced with intelligence-led policing.

“We don’t do a lot of good being where the crime is not.”

De Jager will now meet with his senior management team and “digest” the information and feedback received. Then he will present the findings to council and the public.

The numbers are even worse for students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, as the rate of discrimination against them is three times higher than for heterosexual youth.

Any participation in bullying increases risk of suicidal ideas in youth.

The growing popularity of events such as Pink Shirt Day show that Canadians are committed to putting an end to the potentially tragic results of bullying.

Strategies and legislation aimed at preventing bullying and helping victims of bullying are certainly worthwhile ventures. But it bears noting that no one is born a bully, it is a behaviour children learn from those around them.

It is something parents need to keep in mind the next time they’re angered by a passing motorist or something that takes place in the check-out line or neighbourhood rink.

And the consequences of bullying can be life-altering, not just for the victims but for their families, schoolmates and community.

B.C. Views The B.C. government’s third straight budget surplus is the main battleground for provincial politicians this spring, with little else on the order paper to argue about.

The main conflict is over the tax cut for the rich that results from removing a twoyear surtax on personal income greater than $150,000 a year. It’s an outrage, says the NDP, starving our threadbare government services of more than $200 million over the next three years.

NDP leader John Horgan set the tone in his reply to Finance Minister Mike de Jong’s budget speech: “I can appreciate that the minister was celebrating with the champagne-and-caviar set, but the rest of British Columbia saw $700 million in increased fees and taxes on their backs.”

surtax on high-income earners to help get B.C. out of its post-recession red ink, and it expired as it was legislated to do.

This political theatre doesn’t help people understand what’s actually going on. First, a lot of that red ink was B.C. Liberal blood from dismantling the harmonized sales tax and repaying Ottawa for that failed experiment.

Second, this temporary tax on the rich was a political strategy by de Jong and Premier Christy Clark, limping into an election most expected them to lose. De Jong’s debut budget in February 2013 also accelerated a small increase in corporate income tax, stealing two populist planks from Adrian Dix’s NDP platform.

Ending the surtax not only kept a promise, it kept B.C. competitive with Alberta on personal income taxes. High wage earners and many of their businesses are more mobile every year, which is why this year’s budget also extended tax breaks for high-tech and digital media companies.

Another tweak in de Jong’s budget was to increase the low-income cutoff for personal income tax from $18,000 to $19,000.

Those with the lowest incomes are relieved not only of income tax but also medical

premiums, which continue to march up by another four per cent, and are mostly paid by employers. As with the federal election set for this fall, we will hear a lot about the bur-

In B.C. they have to dig deeper for car insurance, hydro, ferry rides and post-secondary tuition, while those top-hatted champagne-sippers party on with their tax holiday? Well, not exactly. Here’s an assessment from Philip Cross, research co-ordinator at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute and former chief economic analyst at Statistics Canada.

Just after the 2013 B.C. election, Cross noted that Canada, its provinces, Europe and the United States have all been adjusting their tax systems to increase the load on wealthier people and ease it from the poor.

This has closed the wage gap considerably in Canada. By 2010, the top 20 per cent of earners were paying 58.3 per cent of all income taxes. That’s up from 50 per cent in 1976, showing how long Canada’s income taxes have been “progressive.” This is the main reason why “income inequality,” that other great cause of the left, started leveling off in Canada around 1998.

Cross points to measures like the low-income exemption from income tax. By 2013, the bottom 40 per cent of Canadian households were paying just 6.8 per cent of income taxes, and more than a third of income tax filers were paying none at all.

Cross asks and answers the central question: Should the rich pay more? “If it’s a misinformed attempt to compensate for imaginary losses of low-income people, the answer is clearly no.”

YOUR VIEWS Two sides to vaccination debate I am adamantly opposed to our government mandating routine vaccinations to children because the entire theory and practice of vaccination is unscientific and doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. It simply doesn’t cut the mustard. A growing number of dissenters (call them anti-vaxxers if you like) are opting out and refusing to vaccinate their children because they are seeing through the deceptive and fraudulent government program called immunization that masquerades as science.

Edward Jenner, the so-called father of vaccination, has been eulogized by and large by the medical profession since the introduction of vaccination in the early 1800s.

Jenner obtained his medical degree by sending 15 pounds to an obscure Scottish university.

When confronted with vaccinations that did not prevent cases of smallpox, he explained that the vaccination mitigated the severity of the disease.

When the smallpox cases terminated in death, he described the vaccines used as “spurious.” Only if successful were they regarded as “genuine.”

His eldest son died at 20 of tuberculosis after being injected with swine-pox at 18 months and six years later with cowpox. He was sickly until his death. James Phipps was vaccinated with cowpox pus as a child and then inoculated with smallpox about 20 times. He died of tuberculosis at 21.

Jenner’s closing years were years of misery as the failure of his vaccine fetish became increasingly evident. Space does not allow me to enumerate the myriad reasons vaccination is to be considered a grotesque superstition and sinister practice with evil consequences. Here are just a few: 1) vaccine ingredients (eg ethyl mercury, aluminum hydroxide, formaldehyde) are toxic and destructive.

2) Adverse reactions are far more prevalent, permanent and even fatal than reported by the medical profession.

3) Fragile immune systems are being systematically crippled and destroyed. The sufferings of children (and parents) is incalculable.

4) Autism, diabetes, asthma, life-threatening allergies and debilitating developmental diseases are epidemic.

5) Herd immunity is a sham. Measles outbreaks, for example, have occurred in fully-vaccinated populations.

Mandatory vaccination is a violation of our inherent civil rights and of the Nuremberg Code. It is contrary to our Canadian Constitution.

Ralph Neumann Mission

Say yes to vaccines Ralph Neumann’s letter against mandatory vaccinations (above and online) reminded me that it is time to put compost on the gardens.

Otherwise it was the most pitiful excuse I’ve

seen in quite some time attempting — and failing miserably — to justify the pseudo-science, half-truths, completely made up facts, debunked claims about vaccines and autism, and other dubious claims of the anti-vaxxers.

Just by Mr. Neumann claiming that “entire theory and practice of vaccination is unscientific and doesn’t stand up” showed mind-boggling ignorance of the scientific method which has given us all the benefits of the modern world.

I cant respond to everything that Mr. Neumann claims in the space allowed but let me be clear on this: Edward Jenner’s discovery of the smallpox vaccine puts that man among the greatest discoverers in medical history.

As for that Charles Creighton, who Mr. Neumann praised beyond all reason, was himself the subject of condemnation by the medical boards and peer-reviewed journals of his day for claiming, among other things, that germs didn’t exist. How fitting that an anti-vaxxer would be a devoted follower of his ideas.

When someone is so desperate to defend against mandatory vaccinations by throwing in the Nuremberg Code, it makes me quite happy that the anti-vaxxers have Mr. Neumann on their team. I would laugh it off if it wasn’t all so tragic that such conspiracy beliefs about vaccines are so dangerous to the public good.

Advocating for seniors’ facility in Mission Seniors are adults and mentors too; this must ring loud in the ears of politicians who need to adopt the Council of Senior Citizens’ Organizations motto, “Plan with seniors not for them.”

Mission seniors have felt the brunt of successive mayors and council indifference, lack of empathy, moribund governance and lack of respect for the many contributions seniors have made to our community and contributions from a lifetime of paying taxes.

CRMG started to make changes but they and many seniors who have passed on have passed the torch.

Almost every other community in B.C. enjoys an independent seniors’ activity centre.

Mission seniors need and deserve their own facility. Build on district-owned property adja-

cent to the Leisure Centre, incorporate low-cost to market housing to cover costs of building, with any additional cost paid from accrued surplus. Establish the appropriate fee-for-service.

Permit seniors to govern their own facility and the option to rent out available space.

Please stop making seniors feel guilty in order to appease some spending of public funds needed to create a safe, friendly and needed facility for seniors to enjoy and enhance their lives through exercise, health programs, crafts, entertainment and so forth.

Simply, I am requesting council to complete the process underway to finalize that component of information gathering, then build seniors their facility.

Connecting with the outdoors Dewdney school to expand its CORE program Carol Aun

“We can’t do it all at once,” said Sue McLeod, principal at Dewdney. “We want to be methodical and really try to make sure what we integrate into the curriculum makes sense.”

McLeod started the idea for the program with a $2,000 grant from Whole Kids Foundation last year.

She used the money to build gardens at Dewdney and Deroche schools and encouraged students to learn

Since then, she has been applying for more funding for the program which will include lessons in the outdoors, on land, and in the water.

Students will learn wilderness survival skills, such as how to start a fire without matches, tie knots, and build a lean-to shelter.

On land, they will learn rock climbing, team building and problem solving skills, and in the water, they will learn to kayak and swim. Grade 6 students will even try summiting the challenging Dewdney Grind trail.

Students will also have lessons inside and a gardening component.

Worm composting in the classroom teaches students about organic waste and gives them the opportunity to watch the worms and see what happens to soil when it breaks down.

“We hope this will be a centre for training for outdoor education,” said McLeod, who also plans to research how the program will help develop social responsibility and academic success in children.

Conductor ends will need to be joined with the use of an implosive connector, which is a metallic sleeve with a small charge in it. Using safe and controlled methods, the sleeve is detonated which compresses (welds) the conductor ends together. This split-second process will create a flash with smoke and a bang similar to fireworks.

The new 247 kilometre, 500 kilovolt transmission line between Merritt and Coquitlam will expand the capacity of the system that brings power to businesses and homes in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.

The 2015 British Columbia Historic Motor Races are again coming to Mission.

The Vintage Racing Club of British Columbia (VRCBC) announced the 28th running of the races will be held Aug. 22 and 23 at the Mission Raceway Park road course.

This event has run since 1981. It is the largest vintage race event in Western Canada with typically 100 vintage and historic racing cars and several thousand spectators in attendance.

For 2015, organizers are bringing back the popular Hagerty Formula Festival featuring the quick pure‐ bred open wheel and sports racing cars. The plans for 2015 also include a special race for vintage and historic sedans and sports cars of the types that people remember from younger days.

Returning as well for the 2015 event is the “Ride in a Real Racing Car Event,” where fans can (for a nominal contribution) go for a ride on the track with a racing driver in one of the day’s cars during a dedicated period held over the lunch break each of the two event days.

The event is popular with classic car enthusiasts as well. They can display their vehicles in a special spectator area, known as “The Field of Dreams”, creating a unique show of its own.

The Mission Outlaws are heading to the second round of the Pacific Junior Hockey League playoffs.

The local squad, which fell behind two games to zero early in the playoff series against the Langley Knights, bounced back with four straight wins, culminating with Tuesday night’s thrilling 6-5 overtime victory.

Bakshi Gill played the hero, scoring seven minutes into the first overtime period to give Mission the win and the series. “It was a great feeling, “ said Gill. “I just saw the puck coming in on the rebound and it was an open net and I just put it in the net.�

When the puck went in, Gill’s teammates mobbed him on the ice.

For many, it was an unlikely outcome to the series, considering Langley took the first two games. But the Outlaws showed no quit in their game. “The boys really came back from those two losses. We came together as a group and we showed how we play,� said Gill.

The clinching game was a thriller for the fans and tested the nerves of players and coaches alike. Mission had a 5-3 lead in the third period, but couldn’t protect it. Giveaways, falling players and other mishaps allowed Langley to tie it up and send it to extra time. “What you saw tonight was a result of four games in five nights and no lead was safe. Guys on both sides were running on fumes,� said Outlaws coach Brad Veitch.

Even when it wasn’t looking good in overtime, the coach said he still thought his squad was going to get the winner. When the final goal went in, it wasn’t just the players celebrating.

And what went through Veitch’s mind? “Elation, thank God we don’t have to play Thursday night.

Chaplin was one of the six-member Team BC squad to win the honour in the Artistic Gymnastics team event. Changes to CPP could benefit you in the long term According to recent Statistics Canada numbers, a 50-year-old worker in 2008 expected to stay in the labour force about 3.5 years longer than the same worker in the mid-1990s. But this does not mean we will enjoy fewer retirement years.

In 2008, a 50-year-old man could expect to spend 48 per cent of his remaining years in retirement, compared to 45 per cent in 1977.

This is because we are living a little longer.

The Canada Pension Plan (CPP) is designed to replace about 25 per cent of your average pre-retirement employment earnings, up to a maximum amount. Changes in 2012 will make CPP a little more flexible.

“With early retirement, people can take their CPP at age 60. It used to be as long as you were collecting CPP, you didn’t have to pay into CPP,” explained Jim Sobkow, branch owner of H&R Block in Mission.

“They are getting to the point now where every nickel counts.”

Statistics Canada also examined changes to the numbers of hours worked. The growth in the 55-andover population has increased annual hours by 87 per cent between 1997 and 2010. That means the trend towards delayed retirement has resulted in significant positive impact on annual hours worked and shows that the 50-plus population is a strong part of the Canadian labour market.

Under the old rules, people between 60 and 65 who wanted to start receiving retirement pension early had to stop working for at least two months. If they subsequently went back to work, they did not have to resume contributing to the plan.

This will change. People now no longer need to stop working in order to receive retirement pension.

However, if they do continue to work while receiving pension, they will have to continue making See next page

Now. if people decide to keep working, or go back to work or take your pension at age 60, the government is “going to still dictate that you pay into CPP until you are 65,” he explained.

Then people have the option to continue paying until they are 70.

Previously, CPP increased retirement pension by 0.5 per cent for each month you delayed the benefit after age 65. So, if you decided to take CPP at 70, your pension was 30 per cent more than it would have been if you took it at age 65. Under the new rules, that same delay will give you a 42 per cent increase. If you are between 65 and 70, still working and receiving CPP retirement pension, you will have the option of opting out of CPP contributions. Any additional contributions will increase your monthly benefit.

Sobkow said some people are choosing to make the conscious decision to pay into CPP until they are 70, but most aren’t.

Festival for young and old Linking Generations is the theme for the 8th annual Mission Writers and Readers Festival.

The event is set for March 7 at Heritage Park Centre and is for anyone who loves to read or write and will feature guest speakers, workshops, author readings, and more.

Ken Selvaraja INTRODUCTION Ken immigrated to Canada, from Sri Lanka, in 1974. At the time he was working in the health care industry. “I decided I should be looking for something a little more challenging,” he said. He chose to take a course in gemology. That decision changed his life forever. He opened his first retail shop in the Mission Hills Shopping Centre in 1979. His business, Lanka Jewels, gradually began to grow. “As the city grew up, we grew up,” said Selvaraja. When the new Junction Mall was built, he decided to move his successful company to the new location.

VOLUNTEER Selvaraja said he loves the community and enjoys working with youth and children, “especially those who are coming from a home that might need a little extra help.” He used to work with several specific charitable organizations, but Selvaraja now works with a variety of causes, depending on where he sees a need.

KEEPING ACTIVE Selvaraja’s business keeps him busy. His long term goal is to keep his business at the Junction and possibly expand to meet the needs of the growing population in Mission. “I’m a golfer as well. So I plan myself in a way that I come and put a couple of hours in the shop and then go and play golf.

Also, benefits are reduced if you decide to take CPP early. Under the old system, if you retired at age 60, your pension amount was 30 per cent less than if you had waited five years. Starting in 2012, the system will gradually change and the reduction will move from 0.5 to 0.6 per cent per month. It doesn’t sound like much but it means, at 60, your pension would be reduced by 36 per cent, rather than the previous 30.

Those out of the workforce for a number of years will also benefit under the new system. Now you can drop up to 7.5 years of zero or low income earning years from your benefit calculation. So, if you were a stay-at-home mom, family caregiver or you travelled for a period of time, those years can be ignored, resulting in a few extra dollars of CPP. If you started receiving benefits before December 31, 2010, you do not need to worry about these changes as long as you stay retired.

But, if you are looking at early retirement, you may want to revise

your calculations based on the new numbers.

Sobkow has some advise for people who are considering retirement.

“Number one, you have to have something to do. You can’t just retire and say I’m just going to kick back. There are too many hours in the day so you have to have a plan,” he said adding that some people just choose to keep working. It all depends on health and other considerations.

As tax time approaches, seniors should be aware of the credits that are available to them.

“When you turn 65 there’s another little credit that kicks in called the age credit.”

Sobkow said a professional tax company can help people find those lesser known credits and deductions that they may qualify for. The government is making the tax structure more and more complicated all the time.

Stay active after retirement

Embracing a new hobby is one way for recently retired men and women to avoid growing bored during retirement.

From the moment young men and women first walk into the office for their first day as a working professional until the day they officially retire, the notion of planning for retirement is never far from their minds.

But when the day to hang up the briefcase and donate all those business suits arrives, some retirees wonder what to do next.

Some retirees know exactly how they will spend their days when they no longer have to work, while others who decide to play it by ear may find themselves battling boredom.

For those among the latter group, it’s important to understand that many retirees find themselves bored once they no longer have to focus on a career.

Jobs keep men and women busy and provide a sense of purpose in their lives, so it’s understandable that retirees feel bored once those jobs are no longer a part of their lives. But just because you no longer have an office to go to every day does not mean life cannot be as fulfilling or even more fulfilling than it was when you were still working. Work part-time: Though it might seem odd to start working right after

you retire, a part-time job can provide the type of structure you have grown accustomed to without all of the responsibility that comes with a full-time career. Part-time jobs can range from consultancy work that makes use of your professional experience to something entirely different like landscape maintenance at a nearby golf course that gets you out of the house and enjoying the warmer seasons.

Embrace a new hobby: Working professionals often say they wish they had time to pursue a hobby.

Now that you are retired, you have

all the time in the world to do just that. Whether it’s perfecting your golf game, writing that novel, learning to cook like a gourmet chef or whatever else you might have always wanted to do, retirement is a great time to do it.

Volunteer: If a part-time job is not up your alley, then consider volunteering in your community.

Volunteers are always in demand, and volunteering with a local charity can provide a sense of purpose and provide opportunities to meet likeminded fellow retirees, all while helping to quell your boredom.

Not that long ago, if an all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicle was on a buyer’s shopping list, the options were largely limited to SUVs and trucks.

Today the automotive landscape has exploded with manufacturers offering many more AWD vehicles. In fact, 48 per cent of all vehicles purchased in Canada come with AWD or fourwheel drive (4X4).

For Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Canada (Formerly Chrysler Canada) the percentage is even higher, at roughly 58 per cent, thanks, in part, to the success of the Jeep brand and the many vehicles sold under that off-road-ready marque.

The latest entry, the Jeep Renegade, will be arriving at dealerships around April but just last week I had a chance to drive this small Jeep in classic Canadian winter conditions just outside of Montreal.

Looks The setting for the winter driving program was at ICAR, an enthusiast’s racing facility built on the abandoned aprons and taxiways of the old Mirabel airport, including a slalom course, road course and off-road adventure. The bold orange Renegade instantly jumped out against the howling wind and, at times, whiteout conditions. The Renegade is built in Europe on the same platform that Fiat uses to make the allnew Fiat 500X. This cost sharing, multi-vehicle offensive is what has helped Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) to be so successful over the past few years. The engineering and design was done in Michigan to insure the Renegade has all the classic Jeep characteristics, from the round headlamps and classic Jeep grille, to the trapezoidal wheel arches, appropriate ground clearance and overall bold styling. The Renegade is smaller than the Compass

but this model is only available with a six-speed manual transmission; if the buyer wants and automatic, the larger 180hp 2.4L 4-cylinder is fitted with a class leading nine-speed automatic.

There is a whopping $2,990 premium to get the larger engine and automatic on the Sport trim and just $1,495 on the North, excluding the price premium to get AWD. At the end of the day this Jeep has a very attractive exterior and interior and is something

and Patriot models in the lineup, helping to promote the red-hot, small crossover segment even further.

Inside With a high seating position and boxy roofline, the Renegade has a lot of headroom and large windows, making this compact crossover feel open and airy. The dash and surrounding trim is filled with eye-catching touches, like the speaker grilles and air vents that come painted for more panache. The front seats are supportive and provide a nice look down the long hood, making this feel more “trucky.”

The back seats offer plenty of room in this class and the cargo area is what Jeep calls class leading.

Prices start at $19,995 for base Sport model with front wheel drive (FWD) and the first AWD model starts at $25,995.

The volume leader will be the North trim with alloy wheels, starting at $27,494 for an AWD version. The problem will be the higher-end trims, like the $31,995 Limited, that look pricey compared to a bigger compact SUV, like a Honda CR-V, with a much more powerful engine, vastly bigger interior and a $30,000 AWD starting price.

Drive FCA didn’t just have the Renegade to drive in frozen weather, rather a selection of the 17 vehicles they offer with AWD or 4X4 capability.

They were clear to point out that nine of the 26 models have AWD available even on the base trim. The Renegade’s base AWD system is a lighterweight active powertrain that can disconnect the rear wheels to save fuel but reconnect them in a fraction of a second if the temperature drops of the windshield wipers are turned on. On dry pavement, the system only needs to detect the slightest wheel slippage

IN LOVING MEMORY of Gloria Jean Blanchard who passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, in Abbotsford, BC on February 15, 2015 at the age of 67 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Edmonton, AB on March 15, 1947 to her loving parents, Charles & Christina Blanchard.

Her family relocated to Burnaby, BC and Gloria eventually moved to Abbotsford, BC, which became her final place of residence for the past 25 years.

Gloria will be deeply missed by her spouse, Bruce Smith, 3 siblings Marj (Ken), Rick (MoToKo), Bob (Teresa); 4 children Paula (Kerry), Ken (Shari), Tanya (Dave), Sonya; 3 step-daughters Michelle (Randy), Laura, Sandy (Adrian); 16 loving grandchildren and her loyal companion, Bailie.

She is also survived by many other family members and friends who where very close to her heart.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, March 15, 2015 at Mount Lehman Community Hall, 6418 Mount Lehman Road, Abbotsford, BC starting at 1 pm.

Gloria will be forever in our hearts as a loving mother, sister, grandmother and friend.

May she rest in peace now and always. We love you.

DEGEER Joyce passed away peacefully on Feb 24th 2015 at the age of 88. Joyce was born in Bristol England and moved to Canada to be with her family, Mike and Joyce, Adrian and Jennifer and Heather and David.

Joyce just loved to be the life of any family gathering and she was loved by all of her grand children and great grand children she is going to be greatly missed by all.

SCHMOR, Irene E. (nee: Doerksen) June 26 1940 - Feb. 24 2015 Irene’s journey on earth ended at age 74. She leaves to mourn her spouse Paul, children Carl (Kate) and Kent, grandchildren Ethan & Emma, brother Henry (Chrysanna) and sister-in-law Nancy. Irene is predeceased by her parents Herman and Mary Doerksen, and brother John. Irene was the founding director of the Amadeus Children’s Choir following a lengthy career of teaching in Winnipeg and Surrey, BC. The family wishes to acknowledge the special care provided by the staff at KinVillage in Tsawwassen, and also to Deraldine who provided compassionate care to Irene for the past 13 years. Funeral service will be held on Monday March 2, 2015 at 1:30 pm at Valley View Funeral home, 14660 72 Ave, Surrey, BC, interment to follow.

James Earl Passed away at Abbotsford Hospital on February 22, 2015 at the age of 85. Jim is predeceased by wife Nessie Degeer (nee Ballantyne, Oct. 7, 1997) parents Earl Shelton and Claira (nee Anderson) Degeer, sisters and brothers, Lois, Laura, George & Charlie.

He is survived by sisters-inlaw, Judy and Maureen, brother-in-law Eugene McCormack, and a number of nieces and nephews in Ontario. Jim was born in Bancroft, ON and came to Abbotsford in 1967.

He worked at Abbotsford Chrysler from 1971 until his retirement then worked for Harwood Industries. Jim was an Abbotsford Kiwanis member for 45 years and past Lt. Govenor, recipient of the Mel Osborne and Milt Lewis awards and fellow life member recipient. He was also a Director of Schmidt Family Foundation, Maple Wood House, Abbotsford Kiwanis Foundation and member of the Abbotsford Curling Club. Service to be held at Calvin Presbyterian Church, 2597 Bourquin Cres.

Originally from Chile, Julia had made her home in the Lower Mainland for over 50 years.

Julia was a very loving wife and mother. She was an avid reader, retired teacher, loved to travel and family was very dear to her. Swordy, Muriel (nee: James)

Swordy, Muriel (nee James) passed away peacefully on February 22, 2015 in Chilliwack at age 90. Muriel was born near Watson, Saskatchewan on December 31, 1924.

She served in the RCAF in WWII, after the war she married John (Al) Swordy and settled in Richmond.

Muriel raised a family and worked in administration then retired to Abbotsford, wintering in the south. Predeceased by her husband Al and her six brothers, she leaves behind her son Lee Swordy and his wife Rachel.

At Muriel’s request there will be no service. Rachel and Lee wish to thank everyone at Cascade Lodge for the wonderful care they gave mom.

ROBERTS Anna Bartsch Feb. 10, 1934 ~ Feb. 12, 2015

Anna Bartsch (Rempel) was born on February 10, 1934, in southern Saskatchewan, the youngest of twelve children.

She always said she had a happy childhood. She lived in the area until the family moved to BC in 1972.

She met dad in 1950 at a birthday party where she played accordion and he played guitar. It was the beginning of a lifelong enjoyment of music together. They were married on July 18, 1954 and in the following years six children were born to them.

Through the years they also were blessed with sixteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Both mom and dad were very involved in their church, first in Rhineland and then Swift Current, Saskatchewan, then in Grace Church in Abbotsford. Anna loved sewing, gardening, quilting, and camping.

She was diagnosed with cancer in January and died at home in the arms of her son (Gary). We will all miss her deeply. She was always there for us and we are glad for the times each of us had to be there for her. She is survived by her six children, Emily (Ken), Shirley, Gary (Jacqueline), Elsie (Dave), Vic (Pat), and Lucy (Les), her siblings Frank and Margaret, her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on Friday, February 20 at Grace Church.

Died peacefully of pneumonia in Abbotsford, BC. A “Celebration of Life” will be held 2:00 PM Saturday February 28 at Gladwin Heights United Church in Abbotsford. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Betty’s name to a charity of one’s choice.

Born in Fort William, Ontario, to Mary and Harvey McNally of Murillo, Ontario, she was a country girl. Member of the global mission of Moral ReArmament, professional photographer and photo journalist (PACE magazine, L.A.), wife, mother, gardener, cook, seamstress, rug and quilt maker, women’s libber, voracious reader, amateur historian (5th place in national Women’s Institute contest; MacLachlan Woodworking Museum), author (“Land of 1000 Lakes; a History of Loughborough Township”), B&B manager, watercolourist, avid United Church participant in Murillo, Ottawa, Harrowsmith, Sydenham (Ontario) and Abbotsford, BC. Betty saw life through the lens of her Christian faith, finding blessings in nature and in the love of her husband Ron, son Gordon, daughter-in-law Marni, family and many friends. She believed that with God’s guidance people and situations can change.
