West Shore youth and others around the region are combating bullying with film.

The Boys & Girls Club Services of Greater Victoria, City of Victoria and Victoria’s Community Centre Network have partnered for the fourth annual Youth United AntiBullying Film Festival, arming youth with storytelling tools just in time for Pink Shirt Day today (Feb. 25).

“I just feel so strongly about the importance of the event. It’s youth speaking about how they view

bullying and how it affects them,” said West Shore Boys & Girls Club supervisor Dana Parkes.

“They are speaking to peers and it’s a great public awareness event and on par with what they are interested in, and is a great venue to get the message across.”

Both the West Shore and the Millstream Boys and Girls clubs are involved, making personal pledges, pink bracelets and deco-

rating pink t-shirts in a show of support against bullying. Meanwhile, filmmaking participants age 18 and under are creating 30-second PSAs that convey a creative or impactful anti-bullying message.

“It is quite incredible to see what youth are capable of in the computer, and the production value is really surprising at first and admirable,” Parkes said.

“They put a lot of effort into making it a professional product and they take a lot of pride in the message and production of the video. You wouldn’t know it’s amateur filmmakers and (editors).

It’s something a T.V. station would produce.”

Colwood pharmacy hit in armed robbery

According to police, the man entered the store at approximately 4:45 p.m., produced a gun and demanded both money and prescription drugs before fleeing on foot with his ill-gotten gains.

The RCMP detachment’s canine unit was called in to help search for the suspect, but officers were unable to locate him. The suspect is described as

The West Shore RCMP Major Crime Unit and Island District Forensic Identification Service are assisting with the investigation, but are asking for the public’s assistance.

Man in custody, weapon recovered after shot fired in Langford Thursday West Shore RCMP responded to reports of a gunshot last Thursday evening at around 6 p.m. in the area of Desmond Drive and Kelly Dawn Place.

Police asked the residents who live in the area to remain in their homes last night as they searched the area for a gunman.

A portion of Desmond Drive was closed off during the search, which saw the Vancouver Island Emergency Response Team, West Shore RCMP and five police dogs – including one from Saanich – search the area, resulting in the apprehension of the lone male.

The man is now in custody and being questioned by investigators.

After a lengthy search, a weapon was later recovered from the scene, but police are not releasing any more details about the evidence recovered or the man in custody to protect the integrity of this ongoing investigation.

Four young men, one from Langford and three from Sooke, were taken into custody late last Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 18) after two other young men were reportedly physically assaulted and robbed by four men at Danbrook Park in Langford.

One of those injured was transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, but has since been released.

West Shore RCMP officers caught up with the four suspects as they were leaving the park and held them in custody pending an appearance in Provincial Court last Thursday. An RCMP statement said “the robbery was over drugs” and that two of the suspects were known to police.

Witnesses at the scene helped police identify the suspects and are co-operating with the investigation. The four range in age from 17 to 22, with one from Langford and three from Sooke.

West Shore RCMP’s Major Crime Unit has taken over the investigation, assisted by general duty members. Numerous witness statements have been taken, with more still to be gathered.

Restaurants and other foodbased establishments are another story, however. Because of the amounts of food waste from these businesses, in terms of the percentages of what’s being thrown out, the diligence required and buy-in from staff is paramount to the process. It was also a much larger and more significant transition when the ban was brought in.

Gary Strachan, operations manager of Bin 4 restaurant in Langford, says their garbage production has dropped by close to 70 per cent since the start of the year, now that the staff is on board.

“There have definitely been a few hiccups and it’s a bit of trial and error,” he says, “but there have been way fewer bumps in the road than I thought there would be when I heard it was coming.”

Strachan says it’s much easier for staff members to adjust if they haven’t been in the business very long, because they haven’t developed instinctual ways of doing things.

“I find the younger kids have no issues with it. It’s us old dogs that have trouble adjusting to doing things in a new way, but we’re getting there. I’m one of them,” he says, pointing out there are numerous times throughout the day when he catches himself putting something in the wrong bin, purely because it’s what he’s done his whole career.

While they were incorporating the new system, he showed every employee at the beginning of each shift the new process for disposing of the organics, and he stressed its importance.

Strachan found that if he explained the “why” of it, the staff were much more receptive to making the change.

“I’ve been in restaurants for

a new connector pathway to link the rear of Shoreline Community Middle School off Shoreline Drive in View Royal with the main trail coming off the railway trestle over Island Highway, and Portage Park. The project, on school district land, is being done in conjunction with restoration work on the Craigflower Pump Station that sits between the school and the trestle.

“Once the E&N Trail is (completed), it’s a major route for kids from portions of View Royal and the First Nations, as well, to get to school,” said View Royal Coun. John Rogers.

One of the interesting things about the Shoreline Trail is its connection to history, he added. On an old map from 1860, a dotted line shows a pathway called the Portage Trail connecting the Gorge Waterway to the Esquimalt Harbour.

It allows us to keep track of the trends and be able to see them one year to the next – it allows us to see that evolution.”

“As the event grows, more and more regions are getting involved,” Parkes said.

“It started as a downtown Victoria initiative and now it is all over Greater Victoria, which is a great way to bring awareness to the issue. It’s really a heartwarming, feelgood booster for anyone having a tough time. It’s (also) great to know that others are feeling the same way and great to know there is support out there for you.”

Getting smart about energy usage in the home Mike Davies News Gazette staff

When Solar Colwood and Horizon Technologies showcased their pilot Smart Home For Us system at the home of long-time Colwood resident Frank Gale, the Gazette was on hand to see what all the fuss was about.

“This system makes me more aware of exactly how much energy I’m using and where I can save money,” said Gale, a captain with the Colwood Fire Department.

“And I think, overall, for the average person, that’s what they want to do – save money.

Since I’ve started with Solar Colwood and done the hot water, the ductless heat pump and now the smart home, I’ve saved lots of money. Plus, I’m helping the environment, too.”

Colwood is touting, walked us through how it works and why it’s being developed.

“A key part of it is getting information to the consumer so they can see how much energy they’re using,” he said, waving a seven-inch tablet around at Gale’s kitchen table. “If you look at a typical homeowner, they’ll get a bill in the mail maybe one or two months after they’ve used that energy, and by then, they’ll have forgotten how they used that energy.”

This new technology, according to Bertsch, allows the consumer to see in real time, so they can adjust habits and make decisions before or while they’re using that energy.

“A lot of this (poweruse information), you really don’t know unless you have a display like this in your home,” he said.

He used the example of going into one cus-

tomer’s house, hooking things up to the smart system and demonstrating it, to their astonishment.

“The lady of the house was sitting in the living room and she had the music on. We hooked up the system and we saw the amount of energy being used. We turned off the music system and found out that it was just using a little bit of power,” Bertsch said. “Meanwhile she had a reading light on in the corner, (and we turned it off) and boom. The energy went way down. It’s the kind of thing you really don’t realize until you have a good way of measuring it.”

The “hub” of the system controls and monitors the energy use of anything connected to the system. It also allows the user to be able to turn those items on and off. The user reads and controls the system from a tablet, computer, or

When he turned off the halogen-lit lamp using the tablet in his hand, the total power use went from 68 watts down to four.

You can also set timers using the system.

For example, you could set your heat to only

Bertsch demonstrated this real-time connection by having the tablet in front of him monitor the power use of two lamps in front of him on the table. One lamp uses a halogen bulb and

come on in the morning, go off while you’re at work and then come back on shortly before you get home. You can also change that timing remotely, so if you remember to set something – after you’ve left the house – you can still take care of it.

Caring middle schoolers expand social horizons Spencer students raise cash for malaria battle Arnold Lim News Gazette staff

At the end of a lunch-time bake sale, a group of Spencer middle school students added up sales from day one tabulating $124.60. More importantly to them, said 13-year-old Grade 8 student Morgana Adby, the total meant 12 bed nets for children in tropical countries including those in Africa, to help curb the spread of of a deadly disease that accounts for approximately 200,000 newborn deaths every year.

“There is a lot of talk of ebola but malaria

kills a child every minute so we decided that is something we should really focus on and all our money from the bake sale is (for them),” she said. “A bed net is $10; that is pretty cheap to help save lives.”

Adby spent an evening at home baking cookies to bring to the two-day sale, while others in the social action club joined in making a variety of sweet treats and baked goods. Undertaken over a 25-minute span during lunch break, the sale was run by student volunteers dedicated to bringing about social change in the world.

“It makes me feel good. It’s one thing to feel sad about these different issues going on, but it’s another to do something about it,” Adby said. “Even if I am not doing a lot, I am doing something and that makes me feel better about it as a person.”

Grade 7 to 9 students has also collected donations for the Goldstream Food Bank and families in India. This time they partnered with Plan Canada’s Spread the Net campaign to help stop a disease that was eradicated from Canada 50 years ago.

“I am so inspired by these kids. They come up with an idea, they want to help, and they just do it,” Nixon said. “For me as a teacher, it makes me so happy to see there are teenagers that are doing things for other people, not just thinking about themselves.

(I am hoping) this will inspire them to go forth in their journey in life and take part in social action initiatives and help stand up for one another.”

Adby hopes their work now is just the beginning. “What we are doing here is essentially getting involved in whatever way we can and as we are right now,” she said. “As

The anti-bullying day is celebrated across Canada and in 25 countries around the world on other dates. The movement aims to eliminate schoolyard bullying and alleviate the negative consequences bullying can have on children in school.

Bullying can often be life-altering for the families of victims, their schoolmates and their communities.

They can also be tragic, as in the case of Shoreline Community School student Reena Virk, who died at the hands of her tormenters under the Craigflower Bridge in 1997.

The statistics tell a frightening tale. Bullying is not just an occasional event.

According to a report from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, at least one in three teenaged students in Canada report being bullied, while 47 per cent of Canadian parents report having a child who has been a victim of bullying.

Among adult Canadians, 38 per cent of males and 30 per cent of females report having experienced occasional or frequent bullying during their school years.

The numbers are even worse for students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, as the rate of discrimination against them is three times higher than for heterosexual youth. Any participation in bullying increases risk of suicidal ideas in youth.

The growing popularity of events such as Pink Shirt Day show that Canadians are committed to putting an end to the potentially tragic results of bullying.

Strategies and legislation aimed at preventing bullying and helping victims of bullying are certainly worthwhile ventures. But it bears noting that no one is born a bully, it is a behaviour children learn from those around them.

It is something parents need to keep in mind the next time they’re angered by a passing motorist or something that takes place in the check-out line or neighbourhood rink.

Speaking truth can give Canada’s youth great power David Suzuki Special to the Gazette

When she was just 12 years old, my daughter Severn gave a speech at the 1992 UN Earth Summit in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. She spoke with such conviction that delegates were moved to tears. It was one of my proudest moments as a father. More than 20 years later, Severn is the mother of two young children, and the video of her speech is still making the rounds, inspiring people around the world. Its popularity speaks to the power the young have to affect the world’s most pressing issues.

More than half the world’s population is under 30, a demo-

graphic now at the forefront of international decision-making and some of Canada’s most powerful environmental changes. Across the nation, youth are thinking critically about how we can become better stewards of our vast landscapes and spectacular wildlife and protect the air, water, soil and diversity of nature that keep us healthy and alive. They’re standing up for strong environmental protection and a saner approach to resource management in their own communities.

Some young leaders are taking up the David Suzuki Foundation’s call to support the right to a healthy environment in their towns. In December, after attending a Blue Dot Tour event, 10-year-

old Victoria resident Rupert Yakelashek led a successful charge to have his city adopt a declaration giving citizens the right to clean air, water and food, and to participate in decisions that affect their environment.

Ta’Kaiya Blaney, a 13-year-old from B.C.’s Tla’Amin First Nation, followed a path similar to my daughter’s, speaking at the UN Rio +20 conference in 2012 when she was just 11. She’s also gaining recognition as the visionary behind the Salish Sea Youth Foundation and for speaking, writing and singing in defence of a healthy future for animals, humans, plants and ecosystems. She incorporates environmental messages into her songs, as she did on the Blue Dot

Tour. “In my culture it’s a fact, and an understanding of life, that everything is connected, and we were put on this earth to be stewards and caretakers of the environment,” she writes.

Young leaders are also at the forefront of Idle No More, one of the largest Indigenous mass movements in Canadian history. What began in 2012 as teach-ins in Saskatchewan to protest parliamentary bills that would erode Indigenous sovereignty and environmental protections has changed the social and political landscape of Canada.

These young environmental champions share a commitment to their communities and to the world. They know that young

people have the power to rally others to create positive change.

And when people gather around a common cause, magic happens.

Although many young leaders aren’t yet old enough to vote, they’ll be left to clean up messes from decisions made today. We owe it to them to think more carefully about the world we want to leave to their generation.

If you know a young leader who deserves national recognition, nominate him or her for The Starfish Canada’s Top 25 Environmentalists Under 25. It could help inspire others to change the world.

The Wounded Warriors runners arrive at the Langford Legion after completing their week-long run down the length of Vancouver Island, which spanned more than 600 kilometres.

Steve Deschamps, Canning Knull, Lorne Guthro, Mary McGregor, Sebastian Aresenault and Rob Lamothe arrived in Langford on Friday after completing their gruelling run down Vancouver Island to raise awareness of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Departing from Port Hardy Feb. 15, the runners each took a leg of the journey along the Strait of Georgia over the course of six days, covering more than 600 kilometres. It culminated in a celebration back at Saunders Subaru in Colwood, where

the kickoff for the event happened two weeks earlier, before the team departed north.

The team began their days in Port Hardy, Rooney Lake, Campbell River, Comox, Nanaimo and Mill Bay, before returning to the Capital Region for another fundraiser for the cause – an auction and raffle held at the Langford Legion.

Grizzlies looking sharp, regain second in Island Div. NOTICE OF ROAD CLOSURE AND DISPOSITION The City of Langford hereby gives public notice of its intention to close a portion of road, shown in heavy outline in Schedule ‘A’ below, known as Hockley Avenue, which was dedicated as highway by Plan VIP9002.

The 13.8m² portion of Hockley Avenue intended to be closed and removed as highway dedication will be considered by the Council of the City of Langford at its regular meeting at the City Hall, 3rd Floor, 877 Goldstream Avenue, on Monday, March 2nd, 2015 at 7:00pm. Persons who consider they are affected by the Bylaw will be provided an opportunity to make representations to Council at the meeting, or by delivering a written submission to the Corporate Officer by 4:00 pm on that date.

The City of Langford intends to transfer the closed portions of road to the adjacent land owner who will be responsible for all costs associated with the road closure, and will be dedicating approximately 18.3m² of their land for road.

Despite his team losing the south Island final 81-50 to the home court Bays at Oak Bay last week, Belmont coach Kevin Brown likes the Bulldogs’ chances of securing a berth into the provincial AAAA boys high school basketball tournament.

The ’Dogs enter this week’s Island championships at Mount Douglas rated No. 2 south behind the Bays, who last week were No. 2 in B.C. The two are on opposite sides of the draw, meaning that if the Bulldogs were to win their first two games – they open tomorrow against Nanaimo’s Dover Bay, then would play the winner between

Claremont and Vanier from Courtenay – they could meet the Bays again in the Island final.

But Brown isn’t counting his chickens just yet. Dover Bay came from behind to beat the Bulldogs at the Belmont minitournament over the Christmas break.

“The top two teams go, but the third-place team can challenge the (runner-up) at the No. 2 team’s if they haven’t played them in the tournament,” he says.

With Vanier beating Cowichan in the north, the Thunderbirds, a Belmont nemesis this season, wound up on the opposite side of the draw from the Bulldogs.

“I like how our draw looks,” Brown says, noting that if he were “picking my poison,” he’d rather face Vanier

than Cowichan in a semifinal game.

“To be honest, no game at the Islands is easy and you never know what can happen. I’m sure Oak Bay is thinking the same thing. Over the years we’ve seen crazy upsets happen.”

Based on last week’s head-to-head matchup, the Bays command plenty of respect from Brown. “They’re just so strong in every aspect of the game. It’s tough to prep your team against a team like that,” he says.

While Belmont’s goal may not be to beat the No.2 team in B.C., he adds, a positive sign is that the Bulldogs are in perhaps the best overall health they’ve been in all year, after a season in which not one game has seen all five starters in the lineup, due to either injury or illness.

week’s tourney, Brown says, which will make a huge difference against teams with potent offences. And with Lucas Longstaff, a sixfoot-one “big man” who defends opponents’ top forwards, really stepping up his game

of late, Brown says, it gives the team a rocksteady defence.

Grade 10 point guard Nathan Ziragosa and Jack Wenstob continue to lead the offence for the Bulldogs, but the collection of role players are also

cranking their game up a notch at both ends of the floor. “It’s been a bumpy, up-and-down season, but the guys have kept working hard,” Brown says. “I really think the guys have turned things around. We’re getting

improved performance (in the areas of) rebounding and turnovers and getting a consistent effort.”

Facing elimination at the Island AAA girls basketball championships in Port Alberni, the Bulldogs pulled off a pair of wins then came from behind to overtake Stelly’s in the third/fourth game Saturday, only to lose in overtime, 62-61.

Stelly’s will challenge a Lower Mainland team for a wild card berth into next month’s provincials in Langley.

Down by 14 at the half and 15 at one point in the third quarter, Belmont battled back to take the lead by two in the final minute of regulation, but Stelly’s hit a late shot to send the game to OT. While the Bulldogs led for much of the extra period, a Stelly’s three-pointer with eight seconds left sealed the deal.

“The girls showed a lot of heart and determination to battle back from down 15 to send the game into OT,” said Bulldogs head coach Brad Lidstone. “It’s what we’ve been doing all year; no one was willing to give up and in the second half they showed the progress they’ve made.”

Belmont star Isla Swanwick wrapped up her high school career with a best-ever 34 points and hauled down 11 rebounds.

Jess Thomsen added 11 points and collected a team-high 18 boards.

Both girls were named to the tournament allstar team.

Cassy Allen, Alysha Walton, Madi Bullen, Nicole WeldamDickson, Hannah Allen and Frelen Gorst also made significant contributions.

“Probably not many people expected us to get as far as we did,” said Gorst, one of three team captains and a half dozen or so graduating players.

“In the end, to lose by one point … It was an amazing weekend and I’m really proud of all of the girls and the growth we had through the season.”

The Bulldogs’ preseason goal was simply to make it to Islands, Lidstone said.

“I had a strong idea that if the team developed the way I thought, they could (do even better).

I think we really achieved our team goal and I think a lot of players surpassed their personal goals.

It was a super-exciting way to end a season.

It’s heartbreaking, but it really motivates us for next season.”

Six players from this year’s team are eligible to return, but three may play at Royal Bay, he said. Nonetheless, upcoming middle school players from Spencer give Belmont some good prospects in the system for future, LIdstone said.

Recapping the Islands games: After dropping a 73-23 decision to Oak Bay, Belmont beat Cowichan 53-28 in Game 2. Swanwick (18 points) and Thomsen (11 pts.) led the Belmont attack.

Jr. B Wolves, Braves in dogfight Game 5 goes tonight at The Q Centre The precursor to the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League series between the Westshore Wolves and Saanich Braves offered good foreshadowing to the bestof-seven affair.

The Wolves’ one-goal victory back on Feb. 13 at Pearkes Recreation Centre gave a good indication how close the series would be.

After splitting the first two games of the series, the teams went into a second overtime period to settle Sunday’s game 3, won 3-2 by the Wolves at The Q Centre.

Game 4 was set for Monday night (after the Gazette print deadline) in Saanich.

Jordan Martin bagged the winner from Adam Page in the second extra frame, when the teams had played 16:44 of additional time on Sunday.

The Wolves’ Dylan Grant had forced overtime when he scored a power play marker with 2:22 left in regulation, finishing off a passing play from Corey Peterson and goalie Chris Smith.

Jack Rachwalski gave the Braves a 2-1 lead 9:37 into the third. The teams were tied 1-1 after one period, with Saanich’s Hunter Atchison and Westshore’s Christian Brandt trading goals.

Josh Reaume is off to a roaring start on the NASCAR xfinity Series.

The 24-year-old stock car driver, who lived in Highlands for a stretch, managed to avoid disaster and finished 23rd overall in the crash-filled Alert Today Florida 300 at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday.

The finish was a career best by one placing on the series for Reaume, who drove a dozen races on the former Nationwide Series in 2014 and was 24th at Kansas Speedway.

Having started with a pole position of 36th on Saturday, he completed 115 laps and wound up five circuits back of race winner Ryan Reed.

Reaume, who is signed to drive a full season on the series this year for Obaika Racing, sits 16th in the standings, with Sprint Cup drivers who choose to run the xfinity Series excluded.
