Welcome to the 2015 Readers Choice Awards The results of our third annual Readers Choice survey are in.

You’ve taken us on a virtual tour of Cranbrook and Kimberley, highlighting your fa-

vourite people, places and moments. Some of the results were surprising, some were expected, some were … well, read on, and see for yourselves.

We have also excerpted some of the results, providing details about some of the people, places and things that have stood out in the survey. Hundreds

of readers of the Cranbrook Daily Townsman, Kimberley Daily Bulletin and Kootenay Advertiser participated, revealing the depth of experiences one can

have in Cranbrook and Kimberley.

The categories range through all manner of businesses, restaurants, services, entertainment centres,

places and people. You put forward your picks for most beloved citizen, your favourite City Councillor, your favourite bartender, your preferred driving

range, what you think is the best neighbourhood to live in or the best place for a first date — all aspects of Cranbrook that make us who we are.

There’s a lot more to Bud than just acting.

He has been a strong voice for community improvement and the betterment of the lives of its residents through his involvement in a number of organizations: the East Kootenay Mental Health Association, Meals on Wheels, the Cranbrook Rotary Club, to name but a few, as well as his personal initiatives — many of these on behalf of seniors.

Cranbrook’s Citizen of the Year for 1992.

Shirley Rossi of Kimberley takes the silver spot. Over the years, Shirley has been a familiar face at Kimberley events, as one of the community’s most irrepressible and visible volunteers. She has been involved in Girl

Guides, the PTA, United Way, Chamber of Commerce, Women of the Moose, ran the Miner’s Den at the ski resort, Snow Fiesta Queen Committee, Dynamiter Booster Club, JulyFest, WinterFest, KIOTAC, the Business Improvement Association, she was director of

Food Services for the 1980 Winter Games and the Festival of the Arts.

Shirley began her work with Summer Theatre in 1999 and continues to this day. She was the Beta Sigma Phi woman of the year in 1989 and won a commemorative medal during the celebration of Canada’s 125

anniversary.

It is estimated that over the years, Shirley has baked 30,000 meat pies to raise funds for one organization or another. She is a true Kimberley treasure.

Bronze medal citizen Derek Kortschaga has devoted a wealth of time and effort to making Cranbrook a better community to live in.

Earlier this year he was recognized for his efforts in this regard by being named Cranbrook’s Citizen of the Year for 2014.

Derek is best known as a radio personality with The Drive/B104, but it is his contributions to local charity

Team Taylor Adams of Cranbrook came in first place in the nation-wide Dress for the Cause competition, in which organizations across Canada dressed up office and staff to raise donations for breast cancer research and support. Taylor Adams Chartered Accountants (and Friends), led the nation with more than $11,500 raised, winning $5,000 for their community’s local cancer treatment centre. Taylor Adams took gold for Accounting Firm, and Mike Adams himself won Silver in the Corporate Citizen category — Adams committed himself to a day of bra-therhood for every $1,000 raised. The 2015 Readers’ Choice Awards for Gold goes to Glow Yoga and Wellness Studio. The studio was started in 2013 by Krista Birch, who is originally from Cranbrook. The studio specializes in Ashtanga yoga, which is an athletic and physically demanding form of yoga that other Vinyasa Flow styles are derived from.

Classes include Ashtanga for beginners and more advanced practitioners.

The award for silver goes to Exhale Yoga Studio. The studio is well established in Cranbrook having set its roots back in 2006 when

Dueck, Reinhart, Niedermayer top list for favorite athletes

As the saying goes, there’s something in the water around Cranbrook.

This town, and the surrounding region, has produced all kinds of notable athletes, however, some of which have been made famous by careers in professional hockey.

Leading off the crop of hockey players who have reached the NHL, Scott and Rob Niedermayer are probably the most recognizable names in the community.

While both enjoyed long

careers where they shared a Stanley Cup title together in Anaheim in 2007, it was Scott Niedermayer who developed into an elite NHL defenceman and won at every level, which earned him a place in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Niedermayer’s dominance started in major-junior hockey where he won two WHL championships and a Memorial Cup with the Kamloops Blazers.

That turned out to be the tip of the iceberg as he jumped into the NHL with the New

Jersey Devils in 1992, and captured his first Stanley Cup in 1995. More NHL titles followed with the Devils in 2000 and 2003.

Niedermayer found success in international hockey as well, representing Canada with a gold medal in the 1991 World Junior Championship, and gold medal finishes at the World Championship (2004), and World Cup of Hockey (2004). Capping off his international resume is two Olympic gold medals in 2002 and 2010.

While not from Cranbrook, local hockey fans may call him an adopted son as Sam Reinhart has been the face of the Kootenay Ice for the last few years.

Reinhart, the son of former NHL defenceman Paul Reinhart, was drafted second overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2014 NHL Draft after three stellar seasons with the Ice. He set scoring records as a rookie and recently vaulted past L.A. Kings forward Jarret Stoll to lay claim to the franchise scoring record.

He has collected many awards during his time in the WHL, including Rookie of the Year, Player of the Year and Most Sportsmanlike Player of the Year.

However, there is more to life around Cranbrook than hockey and Josh Dueck has certainly proved that.

Dueck, a Kimberley native, recently retired after a stellar career as a para-athlete in downhill sit-skiing. Dueck, who was injured in a freestyle skiing accident in 2004, but got back onto the slopes in a

sit-ski apparatus and rode his way to a silver medal slalom at the Vancouver Olympics 2010. Four years later, he returned to the Olympic stage in Sochi and won gold in combined and silver in downhill.

In between his Olympic accomplishments, Dueck has won gold at the 2011 X Games and a bronze the following year.

He went viral in February 2012 after he shot a video where became the first person to do a backflip in a sit-ski.

Who got the votes for favourite politician, City Councillor We in the East Kootenay are proudly political, happily opinionated, engaged and activitistic. So when we inquired after who our favourite politicians are, our readers waded into the fray with sharpened pencils.

Choices for favourite local politician crossed jurisdictional boundaries. Perhaps in a surprising result, two of the top three are currently not actively involved in politics.

Once again, Bill Bennett polled first.

The two-time President of the Cranbrook and District Chamber,

four-term MLA for Kootenay East, and Cabinet minister with several portfolios in his time, this colourful politician is a populist indeed.

For the third year in a row, Wayne Stetski is our silver medallist politician, even thought he no longer occupies the mayoral seat. But as Mayor of Cranbrook, Stetski always made himself and his ideas accessible to Council and to the public, and always has a smile for everyone.

In third spot for favourite local politician

was Denise Pallesen, who retired this year from the political game. The two-term Cranbrook Councillor and former owner of

Nutter’s Bulk and Health Foods has always been a strong advocate for downtown Cranbrook, for small business and for

women in business.

We asked readers to vote for their favorite City Councillors, and the results almost mirrored the results of the

2014 municipal election in November. Tom Shypitka, Isaac Hockley and Ron Popoff finished with Gold, Silver and Bronze respective-

ly‚– in the election the order was Shypitka, Popoff and Hockley (first, second and third).
