Man arrested after attacking police officers in post office STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

An Eckville man was charged after attacking two police officers in their attempts to arrest him in the Eckville Post Office last Thursday.

Sylvan Lake RCMP were called to the scene at around 1:05 p.m., when the man was said to be causing a disturbance inside the post office and refusing to leave.

Two RCMP officers attempted to arrest him,

and were attacked when the man resisted. He managed to get behind one of the officers and started to choke the officer, and punched the other officer in the head.

Police say the man’s assault on the officers continued as he tried to disarm them both.

With the help of other officers, police were eventually able to arrest the man without any further incident. The man was taken to the Red Deer Regional Hospital to be

assessed, and was later charged.

Leon Williams, 50, of Eckville, was charged with obstruction, resisting arrest, choking to overcome resistance, two counts of disarming a peace officer, two counts of assaulting a peace officer, mischief under $5,000 and causing disturbance.

He was released from custody with a court appearance set for March 27 in Red Deer, and is currently under strict conditions.

Town council gives first reading to mobile vending bylaw STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Sylvan Lake town council has taken the first steps to implementing a mobile vending pilot project beginning this spring, although it’s not yet clear what the project would look like if it goes ahead.

Councillors on Monday gave first reading to a bylaw proposing the 25-week project that would begin in May and run until November. Permits would be issued for a one-week maximum time period for one of six locations along the lakeshore and in the downtown area.

Vendors, as outlined in the bylaw, could sell anything from food, fresh fruit and vegetables, recreational activities and equipment, art and photography, handcrafted goods and flowers and plants. Local vendors would be given preference.

Coun. Matt Prete was in support of the bylaw, and felt the presence of vendors would enhance the town’s atmosphere.

“I’m interested in seeing the program going forward as a pilot program to see what it does,” he said.

Several local restaurant owners who spoke against the proposed bylaw during the open microphone segment of Monday night’s regular meeting, however, indicated their fear of losing business to mobile vendors.

Coun. Jas Payne shared their concerns, and noted he had a particular issue with food trucks.

“I don’t have any issue with art vendors, entertainment, photos, paintings ... those have no negative impact on businesses. I still

am very uncomfortable with food trucks,” he said.

“I don’t like them, and I would very much like to see them removed entirely.

They are a threat to the restaurants that are already waiting to capitalize on that six or eight month period.”

Coun. Graham Parsons noted that the Business Recruitment Team that put forth the recommendation for the bylaw did a “really good job” in compiling their information. He said he was interested to find out how the bylaw would play out.

“It’s not just something that came up, it’s put together by community people who are interested in making downtown and

Lakeshore Drive a lot better,” he said. “Some components have caused concerns, and we’ve heard concerns, but there’s far more to this document than just that.”

Coun. Megan Chernoff said she’d like to see the bylaw move forward, regardless of whether food trucks are part of it.

“I would hate to see this entire thing go to waste if it’s decided food vendors aren’t feasible,” she said.

A public hearing is set for March 23. Mayor Sean McIntyre said that the nonstatutory hearing would be held for the sake of transparency and to allow the opportunity for town residents and business owners to provide input.

The general concept of Family Day, first held in Alberta 25 years ago, is to get families off their derrières and outside doing something active.

Sound like fun?

Of course!

Imagine teens becoming unplugged from whatever electronic device they happen to be using at the time, looking each other in the eye and communicating verbally!

Sound like a plan?

You bet.

And for the privileged few, Family Day turned out just like it was supposed to.

It was cool to see grandpas and grandmas and babies in strollers and moms and dads just being together and enjoying the day named just for them.

Family Day, a February red-letter day, can be chilly and even though Alberta is mostly chilly, except for a brief interlude we call summer, participation in any outdoor event can be a freezing-type experience.

No doubt, the brave and hardy souls who participated in the Polar Bear Dip in Sylvan Lake take this concept to the extreme, flinging their bodies into the icy, unrelenting waters of Sylvan Lake with reckless abandon.

I, personally, have never been a polar dipper, but my camera and I have been close enough to the action to experience the

icy splash resulting from the jumpers leaping into unknown waters on more than one occasion.

Chilly!

For me, Family Day this year was proof that the lines penned by the famous Scottish poet, Robbie Burns when he wrote, “the best-laid schemes o’ mice an’ men, Gang aft agley, An’ lea’e us nought but grief an’ pain, For promis’d joy!” are all too true.

I began the three-day weekend with great anticipation and excitement befitting a working girl who had been given some extra time off. And the weekend started off exceeding my expectations as friends decided to blow up all these balloons, invite a few other friends over, put on a scrumptious feast and call it a party. A birthday party! For me!

I was, of course, humbled and proud, and even when I wore the birthday girl crown and they snapped pictures of me, I tried my best to achieve the demure, yet proud, look. I managed to look only ridiculous, but no one seemed to care, so it was all good.

I envisioned Family Day as a special day, with no particular plans, except to bask in the warmth of my circle of family and

friends and be all happy.

Never in my plans did I envision sitting with my daughter in her living room, while she propped her poor arm completely encased in a huge white cast on the back of a chair and we tried to decide if her fingers were turning blue from lack of circulation or bruising.

Skating! She broke her wrist in several places skating.

I cringe when she tells me the story of how she

was skating backwards and hit a small patch of snow and over she went, putting her hand out to stop the fall.

I can almost hear the bones snap and feel the pain!

Skating is so much fun!

I know!

But it just takes one little moment in time and it is no longer fun.

I know that, too.

It was years ago, but I can still remember the instant bone crushing pain

and the hard, unforgiving ice. And what was I doing?

Skating! Just like my daughter!

Ouch!

Emergency rooms! Casts! Painkillers!

That’s not supposed to happen on Family Day or any other day, for that matter!

Yes, Robbie Burns, the lines you penned are true.

So very true!

Towle working hard to represent constituency’s needs on ongoing basis Dear Editor, Kerry Towle, now your PC MLA for the Innisfail-Sylvan Lake constituency, formerly, when she was the Wildrose MLA, was perhaps the most effective opposition MLA in Alberta history.

She played a large part in getting rid of an unwanted premier and successfully promoting a great number of Wildrose-initiated policies.

When her Wildrose Party became dysfunctional, Kerry chose to continue fighting for those policies by joining the renewed government team led

by Jim Prentice. Kerry is now well on her way to

ensuring those policies become law and is working hard to represent her constituency’s needs on an ongoing basis.

It is difficult to understand why some Wildrose supporters, instead of being proud of Kerry’s successes, are mad about her actions and they themselves want to do the same by crossing over to become a PC in an attempt to end her political career.

Kerry crossed over to become more effective at promoting policies important to this constituency and better representing her constituents in the decision-making process, lending towards a bet-

ter Alberta for all. These disgruntled Wildrosers are crossing over for some sort of sick revenge.

My advice to these disgruntled Wildrosers is, if you are a true Wildrose supporter, then you have plenty of work to do rebuilding your party, getting control of it back from the radical fringe.

If you truly want to switch to the PC Party, then vote for the candidate you feel will most effectively represent you in the Prentice government, and don’t be influenced by a pack of vengeful radicals.

Automated garbage collection program improving efficiency JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

The Town of Sylvan Lake’s automated garbage collection program implemented in 2014 is proving beneficial to both town residents and staff.

Town residents received standardized cart receptacles to be used along with the two automated garbage collection truck units last year.

The new program has been successful, with garbage being collected 33 per cent more efficiently, according to public works director Dave Brand. Trucks collect garbage on two different routes simultaneously. “It’s more efficient that way because you get better coverage,� Brand said. “There is efficiency in that operators aren’t getting in and out of the truck all the time. They stop at each cart and pick it up, but they don’t have to get in and out of the truck.�

Brand said the system allows for town growth to take place without the town having to expand the program’s number of trucks and operators. Operators deal with less physical labour in comparison to the previous manual collection system.

Safety has also been increased. “There was a lot of exposure to slips, trips and falls, back injuries and moving vehicles too, because you’re on the street,� Brand said. “We’ve basically eliminated the majority of that hazard exposure for our people, which is a good thing.�

Cart receptacles are built with wheels, making it easier for residents to transport garbage to the curb for collection. “You can flip the lid open, drop garbage in, close the lid and away they go,� Brand said. “There is no lugging garbage cans back and fourth, because the carts have wheels on them.�

Garbage collection through the program requires all garbage to be secured in bags. An automated arm attached to the truck lifts the cart up, allowing the lid to flip open and the garbage to slide into the truck. If garbage is not properly bagged, it can fly out, especially on windy days, Brand said.

“There was a lot of exposure to slips, trips and falls, back injuries and moving vehicles too, because you’re on the street.� “It goes back to esthetics,� he said. “If you dump the garbage and it’s a windy day, before it falls in the truck, it’s going to blow away and you will have litter all over the place.�

Garbage will still be collected, but it is the town’s desire to educate people on proper use, said Brand. “The amazing thing is the uptake,� Brand said. “When we went to the automated program, we expected there would be a lot more education tags required, and people picked up on it really quickly. We haven’t had a lot of noncompliance issued. When we do try to educate people, usually it’s just an honest mistake and it’s pretty isolated.�

Cart placement, he added, can sometimes be an issue.

He reminds people to place their carts far enough away from a fence or parked vehicle so the automated arm can access them.

The collection program has been well received by the community, said Brand, adding there is $330,000 for an automated recycling collection program in the town’s budget for 2017. “The major cost is the carts themselves,� Brand said. “We would expect we would be able to accomplish that with the same manpower. We could have two people on two trucks, which would be typical.�

The selection arrived following meetings between the Town of Sylvan Lake’s Recreation, Parks and Culture department and the Spray Park Committee.

TOWN OF SYLVAN LAKE ANNEXATION Take notice that the Alberta Municipal Government Board (MGB) will conduct a public hearing respecting an application by the Town of Sylvan Lake (Town) to annex territory from Red Deer County (County).

The hearing is scheduled to commence as follows: DATE: Thursday, March 12, 2015 TIME: 10:00 AM LOCATION: Best Western Sylvan Lake 5027 Lakeshore Drive Sylvan Lake, Alberta The proposed annexation area involves approximately 1,675 acres (677 hectares) of land located adjacent to the existing boundary of the Town. The main purpose of the proposed annexation is to provide the Town with land for industrial and commercial uses.

The Town and the County have reached an agreement on the proposed annexation. The terms of the annexation agreement relate to municipal taxation, as well as compensation. Details of the annexation application can be viewed at the Town’s municipal office during normal business hours. A map showing the annexation area is located on the Town’s website at: www.sylvanlake.ca.

Although the two municipalities have been able to negotiate an agreement, the application filed by the Town contains objections to the proposed annexation. Therefore, the MGB is required to conduct a public hearing to receive information, evidence and argument regarding this matter.

If you plan to attend the hearing and/or wish to make an oral submission to the MGB, please advise the MGB office by 12:00 noon on Monday, March 2, 2015. Urgent care update expected soon STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

An update on the result of the town’s urgent care efforts is expected shortly, Dr. Brad Bahler told town councillors and members of the gallery at Monday night’s regular council meeting.

Bahler said there has been no word from Alberta Health on the formal proposal for a Family Care Clinic (FCC) submitted by the town’s Urgent Care Committee in early November, and he said he wasn’t expecting to hear anything until the provincial budget is tabled.

But he hoped provincial Health Minister Stephen Mandel would follow up on his commitment to get back to the town within ten days of his visit to Sylvan Lake on Feb. 16.

“We’re in a bit of a tricky place right now; we’ve submitted our proposal, we have a commitment to hear back from the minister of health, but no commitment from anybody in terms of moving forward,” said Bahler.

Bahler noted community support for the town’s pursuit of improved health care access has been strong.

More than $50,000 has been raised so far, and he’s encouraging further support.

“We continue to need the support of community and council to seek the avenue to solve this,” he said.

If Sylvan Lake doesn’t get an FCC — the town is currently among eight others earmarked as potential future FCC locations — other alternatives must be explored, he added.

“If it’s not an FCC, it needs to be something else,” he said. “We need to stay focused on this moving forward so it doesn’t get lost.”

Mayor Sean McIntyre thanked Bahler and the rest of the Urgent Care Committee for their tireless work in support of the cause. While the fate of their efforts still isn’t clear, McIntyre said he was grateful to see progress being made, with both Mandel and Premier Jim Prentice now well aware of the issue.

“This is a brighter light than we’ve seen in quite some time,” he said. “We’ve had plenty of progress at home, and now we’ve got attention from the province.”

Coun. Matt Prete said he’s also been encouraged by recent developments — the meeting with Mandel, in particular.

“I think that we’re on a good path, and if we keep doing what we’re doing, eventually we’ll get what we need,” he said.

OPERATION: SAFE SIDE-WALKING! Ensuring a Safe and Accessible Community for All to Enjoy

FACADE IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM The Facade Improvement Program is designed to encourage retail and commercial building owners to invest in facade renovations and storefront upgrades by providing grants to cover a portion of renovation costs.

Grants will be awarded to eligible applicants to cover up to 50% of the façade renovation costs, up to a maximum dollar value. The 2015-16 grant program will provide an incentive for 50th Street/Centennial Street buildings to complete façade upgrades that contribute to the Waterfront Area, by creating a more interesting and appealing street environment that attracts people and new businesses.

The program is intended to: • Enhance the appearance and charm of commercial areas while making streets a more attractive, safe, and interesting place to walk.

• Help building owners attract and retain tenants.

• Contribute to the quality of life of residents, workers, and visitors.

• Promote the marketability of the local business area.

• Build civic pride among the local business community and residents of the Town of Sylvan Lake.

Funding cannot be utilized for maintenance projects.

Applications for grants must enhance the pedestrian experience and contribute to the character of the area.

This project coincides with the Town’s plans to complete the 50th Street Redevelopment Plan Design in 2015, with street reconstruction slated for 2016-2017. The Facade Improvement Program will sunset December 31, 2016.

Recently, mild winter temperatures are creating substantial melting and water run-off. As a result, a significant amount of ice has formed on a number of community sidewalks. The Town of Sylvan Lake would like to remind all property owners and occupants of their responsibility to ensure that all sidewalks bordering their property are completely free of all snow and ice. Pedestrian safety is of the utmost importance. Snow and, particularly, ice left on sidewalks is extremely hazardous, especially for those who are disabled or who have limited mobility.

Severe injuries and legal consequences can result from a mishap on a snow or ice covered sidewalk. Owners and occupiers are required to keep their sidewalks safe and ice-free, especially during freeze-thaw cycles. Punctually removing snow and ice plays a vital role in community health and safety. Residential or commercial sidewalks left unmaintained also create difficulties for mail services, metre readers, delivery drivers, and emergency personnel. For this reason, the Community Standards Bylaw (1592/2012) requires that all property owners and/or occupiers remove all snow and ice (clear down to bare pavement) on all public sidewalks next to their property.

Sylvan Lake Municipal Enforcement continues to put Operation: Safe Side-Walking into action, a program campaigning for diligent sidewalk maintenance and greater community health and safety. The Program aims toward 1stronger partnerships between citizens and the Town of Sylvan Lake to identify potentially hazardous snow and ice conditions on residential and commercial sidewalks. Using a teamwork approach, the Program enhances vigilance and encourages property owners to remove snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property.

This program offers an easy three-step method for identifying and effectively dealing with winter sidewalk safety concerns.

Step 1: Identify and share your winter sidewalk safety concern with us by any one of the following methods: (1) Send us an email at safesidewalking@sylvanlake.ca, (2) Submit an Online Complaint by visiting www.sylvanlake. ca, (3) Call Municipal Enforcement at 403-8587280, or (4) Send us your concern by regular mail

Municipal Enforcement will work closely with property owners to encourage their civic duty to remove snow and ice from sidewalks, pursuant to the Community Standards Bylaw. The goal of Operation: Safe Sidewalks is public safety and bylaw compliance, not legal action. However, when requests, notices or warnings go ignored, or otherwise disregarded, Municipal Enforcement will initiate stronger measures.

Concert series planned in light of Jazz at the Lake hiatus STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

For the first time in over 12 years, Jazz at the Lake won’t be a part of summer festivities in Sylvan Lake. But jazz lov-

ers needn’t fret, as several noteworthy events will take place in its absence.

Among them, and the biggest of a three-date concert series planned for Sylvan Lake and Red Deer over the next several

months, is an outdoor concert on Aug. 15 featuring the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra, the Dan Brubeck Quarter and Sylvan Lake singer Cheryl Fisher and saxophonist Eric Allison.

The event will provide a fitting replacement for the long-running Jazz at the Lake, according to Allison, who’s also chair of the festival’s board. And it will help ease the burden for the festival’s hardworking

organizers and volunteers.

“We decided after careful deliberation and discussions with our board that we’re going to go on hiatus this year,” he said.

“After 12 successful years, it’s almost become a full-

time job to produce the festival ... so we just felt we needed a breather.”

The concert series, which also sees an April 4 date in Red Deer and a May 26 date at a yetunknown location, may require a lighter workload. But that doesn’t mean it will be in any way less momentous.

In fact, Allison assures the contrary.

“Dan (Brubeck) was one of our headliners way back in 2007, and just tore up the place,” he said. “He got a standing ovation after about the second or third tune with his band on the first set, and I’d never even seen that before. He’s a great guy and a very dynamic drummer.

“Then when the Red Deer Symphony contacted us because they didn’t want to conflict with our festival date, we started talking and figured we could do a collaboration.

It will be like jazz with full orchestra. It will be way cool.”

A site has yet to be confirmed for the concert.

The Pier and Centennial Park have been mentioned as possibilities, though both would require approval from their respective jurisdictions.

The concert will take place on the Saturday of the same weekend Jazz at the Lake would have been held. Whether the festival returns to its original format in future years isn’t yet known. But Allison couldn’t be more excited about its replacement in the interim.

“Our initial intention was to just completely take the year off and just to regroup and find out where we’ve been and where we’re going,” he said. “We’ve worked for 12 years on the festival, and to just go dark for a year just didn’t seem right. “(The concert series) will be like nothing Sylvan Lake has ever seen before.

It’s really exciting.”

Zimmerman competing in Canada Winter Games this week JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

The Canada Winter Games are continuing this week in Prince George, B.C., and Sylvan Lake’s very own 17-year-old crosscountry skier Anna Zimmerman is competing with her team of five against 50 other girls, all of whom are under 23 years old, to become Canada’s best skiers.

Zimmerman has been skiing since she was four years old, and started racing around the age of 12.

“It’s a bit intimidating, because some of the girls are two or even five years older than myself,” Zimmerman said. “At the same time, I am really excited about it, and I am really excited to compete against Canada’s best.”

Zimmerman is participating in four different races this week, and hopes to place well. Perhaps more importantly, however, she hopes the event will help her become a better skier.

“I am mainly hoping to have fun and enjoy this amazing experience,” she said. “But I am hoping to get into the top three for the relay.”

Zimmerman has competed at nationals, which she said was one of her biggest races. Aside from that, most of her races take place across Alberta.

She qualified for the competition in Prince George after her father signed her up for Canada Winter Games trials, where she raced her best and earned fifth place.

That qualified her for Team Alberta, and also left

her somewhat surprised.

“The girls are really fast, and even if I did qualify they would probably choose someone older,” Zimmerman said. “But they chose me.”

Zimmerman, a homeschool student, is currently finishing her high school education. When she isn’t studying, she practices skiing with the Red Deer Nordic Ski Community.

“I really enjoy competing and being with other skiers.” she said. “I enjoy the communities I get to be with and am surrounded by.”

Health centre challenging community to donate blood JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

The Sylvan Family Health Centre has recently partnered with Canadian Blood Services and pledged its commitment to donating blood to individuals in need.

Its staff are now challenging other businesses in Sylvan Lake to do the same, and to play their part in helping the 52 per cent of Canadians or their family members who need blood at some point in their lives.

“There are people that benefit all the way around,” said Jamie Johanson, a registered nurse at the Sylvan Family Health Centre. “It’s making a commitment and just trying to create awareness, and we’re hoping some of our patients and patients’ families will participate as well.”

Students to showcase theatrical talents in Wizard of Oz adaptation SUBMITTED SPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Starting the evening of March 10, the Stevenson Performing Arts Centre at École HJ Cody School will be transformed to host this year’s musical theatre production.

Advanced Acting students, technical crew and musicians are in their last weeks of preparation for their adaptation of The Wizard of Oz. Rehearsals have been ongoing since October and the group is excited to perform.

The popular musical follows Dorothy, a young girl from Kansas, who after running away from her guardians is transported to the magical land of Oz by a cyclone. She encounters both wonderful friends and wicked foes on her journey to find her way home.

The Wizard of Oz, first produced for theatre in 1902, was originally based on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, a novel by Frank Baum, and was adapted into the classic film in 1939, starring Judy Garland as Dorothy.

HJ Cody’s production of Oz is an extremely technical show involving many set, prop, sound, lighting and costume changes. Artistic director Jacqui Renwick feels it’s one not to be missed.

“This show is daunting when it comes to the technical aspects,” she said. “Thankfully, we have had a multitude of parents, students, family members and staff working hard to bring it all together. It truly takes a great team to put on a production of this size.

Renwick added she was particularly excited to have Art 31 students working on scenic painting and the Drama 20/30 class working on everything from prop construction to costume repairs.

Cast members have been involved in singing, acting and choreography practices for the last several months, and many are preparing for multiple roles. There are also many students involved behind the scenes, working on sound, lighting, set design and make-up.

The music will be live, provided by the school’s very own Oz band and led by music director Kerry Heisler.

The band is comprised of students and community members.

Hailie Ludington, member of the band, feels the music will be a positive addition to the show.

“I think the live music adds character and allows the audience to connect to the music,” she said.

Audience members should expect a faithful retelling of the story, with a hint of a modern twist. Other aspects to keep an eye out for are the Munchkin Casts from CP Blakely, Steffie Woima, and Bowden Grandview schools, lots of comic and tender moments, and a real, live Toto!

The roles of Dorothy, Glinda, and the Wicked Witch have been double casted, and each actor will perform several shows.

The musical numbers will be sure to have audience members singing along with familiar tunes, and remembering famous lines such as “there’s no place like home.”

Opening night for The Wizard of Oz is Tuesday, March 10 at 7 p.m., with nightly shows as well as two afternoon matinees on Saturday, March 14 and 21. There will be no shows on Wednesday March 11, and 18.

Tickets are $12 and are on sale at the HJ Cody School main office. Patrons are encouraged to get tickets as soon as possible due to early high sale volumes.

Recognition

By Bill Spangler It is Academy Award week with all of it’s glitter and fashion and celebration. Anyone worthy of recognition in the motion picture world is in the spotlight for a few hours.

Many awards are given, for all manner of categories. The achievements and recognition are noteworthy and demonstrative of hard work and countless hours of effort and energy, skill and talent.

The prize? A golden statue that few ever receive, and the bragging rights that go along with it. Many thanks are given to the people who helped along the way, and rightfully so. We don’t achieve much in any category all on our own.

The applause of people and photo’s and entertainment world talk do fade away over time, and the golden statue soon becomes a reminder of past achievements.

There is another recognition, of a different kind, that outclasses all that is ever given by humans on planet earth.

Jesus said, “And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones...I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward.” He also asked, “what good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul?” It doesn’t get better than to hear Jesus say, ”Well done, good and faithful servant....enter into the joy of your Master” That’s a reward that won’t get dusty, won’t fade and won’t end. It may not make headlines in magazines or newspapers, but it makes headlines in the mind of God! And the best part, it’s available to EVERYONE, not just a few!!

Wave face strong opposition in Edmonton tournament KIM MATTHEWS SPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

The Sylvan Lake 16U Wave volleyball team was in Edmonton at the Saville Center last weekend for the Girls North Premier #1 tournament. There were a total of 32 teams from Sylvan Lake and north all the way to Northern B.C. Saturday had the girls starting at 8 a.m. for the roundrobin. They won two of the three games in the round-robin portion of the tournament, resulting in a second-place finish in their pool. This put them into the A side of the playoffs.

Saturday evening at 5 p.m., they played the crossover match against last year’s top-six Pandas team, resulting in a loss of both sets. Both sets were played really well and were close at 25-22 and 25-19.

Sunday morning saw them face some very strong teams, which they played very well against. Overall, the team placed 14th out of the 32 teams competing, which places them in Division 2 for the next Premier tournament in March. There, they’ll join both the North and South teams for some more great competition.

Throughout the weekend, there were some amazing

power hits by Shae Boyes, Erin Matthews, Erin Leidl and Annessa Parcels. This group of hitters kept the other teams scrambling all weekend, and were ‘killing it!’ The setting was done by Amy Busch and Morgan Lockyer, who really kept the play moving, setting up the hitters. The main passing was done by Braxton Orantes and Bailey Kentz as the liberos on

the team, landing pass after pass right to the setters. Playing right side was Rebeka Reynolds, who had some strong hits.

The front line on the net playing middle were Paige Hagel, Leah Hagel and Regan Eisler, who all had some incredible blocks this weekend, ‘stuffing’ the other teams time and time again.

SUBMITTED SPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

The following article and pictures above were submitted by the Sylvan Lake and District Archives Society as part of a series celebrating the society’s 20 years of existence this year.

The Archives Society is open to the public every Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 4 p.m. at its new location in the lower level of the town’s Municipal Government Building.

On April 17, 1917, Mr. and Mrs. James Dingwall and their two children moved to Sylvan Lake to start a Boarding House. They bought the Lakeview Hotel on 46 St., cultivated a large garden, prepared a large dining room and went into business.

On Jan. 21, 1921, the building burnt to the ground when a gasoline lamp exploded. According to the Red Deer Advocate, January 26, 1921: “The entire community deeply regret this disastrous catastrophe, as Mr. Dingwall had established an enviable reputation and his hospitality was known throughout Central Alberta.”

A new boarding house was built and operated by the Dingwalls for many years, providing accommodation for many workers and visitors in town. This building still stands today and is operated as the Hazzard County Bar and Grill.

SHANE GERALD BERGSTROM MYHR Arden Gary Arden Gary Myhr passed away February 1, 2015 at the Red Deer Hospital at the age of 68.

Born on March 6, 1946 in Preeceville, Saskatchewan to Arthur and Gladys (Meberg) Myhr.

After high school graduation in 1964, Gary went on to the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon for 2 years receiving his Diploma in Agriculture. In April 1966, Gary had an amazing opportunity to travel to Denmark to work on a farm for 8 months.

He returned to work on the Myhr Family farm with his dad, brother and Uncles Emil and Hank. On November 6, 1971 Gary married Patricia Leason. They were blessed with 3 children; Fredrick Arthur in 1972, Lisa Jane in 1973, Marlon Gary in 1976. It was not until 1987 that Gary was able to build his own farm on the hill north of the Myhr homestead. This was finally “home” to Gary. He loved spending time in his shop making things with iron and fixing anything that was a challenge. All of his cattle were his friends, talking and scratching each and every one of them was the start to his day. He acquired his class 1 license and hauled logs at Hudson Bay for a total of 16 winters. He also worked at Preeceville Implements for 9 years. Helping his neighbours and anyone that needed help was a very important part of his life. No payment was ever required.

Gary served on numerous committees over the years; Rural Telephone Co., Farmers Union, the local Co-op, Saskatchewan Wheat Pool for over 30 years, Nelson Lake Bible Camp and St. John’s Lutheran Church. In 2002, the farm was sold and off to new adventures in Alberta. Since trucking was still his passion, Gary hauled wood chips for Bulk Systems for 2 years. In 2004, he started working for Red Deer Directional Boring and remained in this line of work until August, 2014. Predeceased by his infant son Fredrick Arthur in 1972; parents, Arthur in 1993 and Gladys in 2000; grandparents Olaf Myhr in 1970, Berntlne (Elleraas) Myhr in 1966, Bjarne Meberg in 1986 and Geoline (Sando) Meberg in 1977; father-in-law Fred Leason in 1994; brotherin-law Richard Birkett in 2007; and many aunts and uncles who were his very dear friends. Survived by his wife and soulmate Patti; daughter Lisa (Desmond) Serhan, Jake and Jena; son Marlon (Andrea), Wyatt, Seth and Maximus; brother Brian (Deb), nephew Nathan and daughter Haley, nieces Tara and Pamela; sister Marion Birkett, nephew Drew (Amanda) Birkett and Josie, nieces Allison Birkett and Whitney (Josh) Striha; mother-in-law Helen Leason; brotherin-law Harold (Bev) Leason, nephew Brent (Krista) Leason, Carter and Ella; nieces Kim Rauch and Ryder, Heather (Eric) Hennie, Austin and Bryson; Laura (Zachery) Kennedy, Karlee and Aubree; aunt Clara (Myhr) Cole; uncle Kenneth Myhr; aunt Doris (Meberg) Rostad. When it will be God’s wish, Gary and Patti will return home together to the Preeceville Cemetery.

Busy Valentine’s Day for local RCMP detachment February 14 12:15 a.m. – A 911 call was placed from a residence on Westview Drive in Sylvan Lake as a result of a domestic dispute. A male advised that he was involved in an escalating verbal argument with his ex-common-law spouse which required police attendance. RCMP arrived on scene and questioned both parties. Alcohol was a factor. A 51-year-old female was removed from the residence and lodged in cells until sober.

1:25 a.m. – RCMP received a 911 call from an intoxicated male who was talking incoherently. A second call was placed to police by the same male who advised that he required an ambulance. The calls were traced back to a motel on Lakeshore Drive in Sylvan Lake. A 53-year-old male from Bowden was arrested for public intoxication. He was also found to have outstanding warrants. An ambulance attended the detachment to check on the male, who remained in cells until sober.

4:06 p.m. – A single vehicle rollover resulted in RCMP attendance.

A truck rolled in the ditch just south of the intersection of Range Road 13 and Township Road 372.

There were two males and one female in the vehicle. Open liquor was found inside the vehicle and the 21-year-old male driver was fined for transporting liquor in an open container.

4:15 p.m. – RCMP are investigating a theft at the Walmart in Sylvan Lake. A female was wit-

nessed stealing a basket full of product and attempting to run out of the store. A female employee ran after the suspect and grabbed the basket at which time the suspect bit the employee and fled the store, leaving in a dark coloured Jeep with another female.

6:39 p.m. – A two-vehicle collision on Highway 20 south of 47th Avenue in Red Deer County resulted in injuries to one of the drivers.

A 35-year-old female was southbound in a van on Highway 20 when she stopped to turn left into her driveway, at which time a truck driven by a 44-year-old female rearended the van causing extensive damage. RCMP attended the scene and charged the driver of the truck with following too closely. The driver of the van sustained a broken nose as a result of the collision.

11:05 p.m. – RCMP attended the intersection of Highway 11 at Highway 20 after a report of an intoxicated male standing in the middle of the road north of the intersection. When police arrived, two males were standing next to a vehicle on the side of the road and both were found to be intoxicated.

A 25-year-old Red Deer male was arrested on outstanding warrants and a 28-year-old Red Deer male was charged with failing to comply with a probation order.

February 16 11:41 a.m. – RCMP attended a domestic dispute at a residence in Eckville. Police were called to a residence on 54 Avenue in Eckville where a 17-year-old female advised

officers that she and her friend had been physically assaulted by her common-law spouse who had left the residence with their two year old child. The male was arrested without incident and is facing two counts of assault.

February 17 6:06 a.m. – A domestic dispute on Old Boomer Road resulted in RCMP attendance. A 911 call was received by a female advising that a female was being assaulted by her boyfriend at the residence. Police questioned both parties and arrested a 29-year-old Sylvan Lake male.

He is charged with assault. A threeyear-old child in the residence at the time of the incident was not injured.

February 19 3:56 p.m. – A 30-year-old Sylvan Lake male is facing a charge of assault in relation to a domestic dispute. RCMP attended a residence on Willow Springs Crescent in Sylvan Lake where a verbal argument became physical. The male admitted to pushing his 32-year-old spouse into a wall. The female was not seriously injured.

February 20 9:32 a.m. – The theft of a vehicle is being investigated by RCMP. A white Ford truck was stolen from outside a residence in Benalto. The complainant reported that his company vehicle was parked on Meadow Drive and contained some tools as well as his wallet. The vehicle was later located by Olds RCMP however the tools and his wallet were not recovered.
