Albertans say ‘yes’ to tax increases on tobacco, alcohol and sugar and sugarary beverages if some revenue is applied to wellness initiatives Properly funded, a provincial Wellness Foundation could accelerate initiatives that improve our quality of life and reduce healthcare demands for years to come. This represents a very significant opportunity for creating a culture of wellness in this province.”

Chronic diseases and injuries are responsible for about 90 percent of the total illness burden in Canada. However the Alberta government is only spending one penny of every healthcare dollar on the primary prevention of chronic disease and injury. Investments in primary prevention can produce returns of up to 50 dollars for every dollar invested.

Examples of effective approaches include school nutrition, workplace wellness, youth engagement, active living, injury prevention and positive parenting programs.

Last year, the British Columbia government committed $50 million annually to cancer prevention through a dedicated tobacco tax increase.

Seasonal work: Town crews have been busy throughout town with snow removal. The town is asking businesses to keep their sidewalks clean and remind all residents they are responsible for their sidewalks to be free of ice and snow.

achieve a triple-win in Budget 2015 by raising additional tax revenue, by reducing consumption with higher prices, and by investing a portion of the revenue in the health of Albertans.”

Wellness Alberta represents a coalition of over 100 organizations from various sectors that are calling for the creation of a provincial Wellness Foundation to improve the health of Albertans. The coalition is urging the government to double its investment in wellness by creating a new arms-length foundation that will provide sustainable funding for health promotion and disease prevention. The Wellness Foundation could be financed through applied tax increases on tobacco or alcohol or sugary beverages.

“An ounce of prevention is truly worth a pound of cure when investing in effective wellness programs” said Judy Williams, campaign team member. “The Alberta government needs to double its investment in chronic disease and injury prevention in order to significantly improve public health.

A recent poll conducted by Leger Research reveals that a strong majority of Albertans support tax increases on tobacco, alcohol and sugar-sweetened beverages—if a portion of the revenue is applied to wellness initiatives. The online survey of 1,010 Albertans was conducted between February 2 and 5.

Three out of four respondents (74%) support a tobacco tax increase if a portion of the tax revenue is applied to “effective measures to improve the health of Albertans such as a provincial Wellness Foundation”. Three out of five respondent support tax increases on alcohol (63%) and sugar-sweetened beverages (59%) if a portion of the revenue is devoted to effective wellness measures.

“Albertans strongly support tax increases on these products when a portion of the revenue collected is invested in effective measures to improve public health” said Dr. Kim Raine, campaign team member. “The government can

Reflections on Family Day fun The general concept of Family Day, first held in Alberta 25 years ago, is to get families off their derrières and outside doing something active.

Sound like fun?

Of course!

Imagine teens becoming unplugged from whatever electronic device they happen to be using at the time, looking each other in Treena Mielke the eye and communicating On The Other Side verbally!

Sound like a plan?

You bet.

And for the privileged few, Family Day turned out just like it was supposed to.

It was cool to see grandpas and grandmas and babies in strollers and moms and dads being together and enjoying the day named just for them.

Family Day, a February red-letter day, can be chilly and even though Alberta is mostly chilly, except for a brief interlude we call summer, participation in any outdoor event can be a freezing type experience.

No doubt, the brave and hardy souls who participated in the Polar Dip in Sylvan Lake take this concept to the extreme, flinging their bodies into the icy, unrelenting waters of Sylvan Lake with reckless abandon.

I, personally, have never been a polar dipper, but my camera and I have been close enough to the action to experience the icy splash resulting from the jumpers leaping into unknown waters on more than one occasion.

Chilly!

For me, Family Day this year was proof that the lines penned by the famous Scottish poet, Robby Burns when he wrote, the best-laid schemes o’ mice an’ men, Gang aft agley, An’ lea’e us nought but grief an’ pain, For promis’d joy! are all too true.

I began the three-day weekend with great anticipation and excitement befitting a working girl who had been

given some extra time off. And the weekend started off exceeding my expectations as friends decided to blow up all these balloons, invite a few other friends over, put on a scrumptious feast and call it a party. A birthday party!

For me!

I was, of course, humbled and proud, and even when I wore the birthday girl crown and they snapped pictures of me, I tried my best to achieve the demure, yet proud look.

I managed to look only ridiculous, but no one seemed to care, so it was all good.

I envisioned Family Day as a special day, with no particular plans, except to bask in the warmth of my circle of family and friends and be all happy.

Never in my plans did I envision sitting with my daughter in her living room, while she propped her poor arm completely encased in a huge white cast on the back of a chair and we tried to decide if her fingers were turning blue from lack of circulation, or bruising.

Skating! She broke her wrist in several places, skating.

I cringe when she tells me the story of how she was skating backwards and hit a small patch of snow and over she went, putting her hand out to stop the fall.

I can almost hear the bones snap and feel the pain!

Skating is so much fun!

I know!

But, it just takes one little moment in time and it is no longer fun.

I know that, too.

It was years ago, but I can still remember the instant bone crushing pain and the hard, unforgiving ice. And what was I doing? Skating! Just like my daughter!

Ouch! Emergency rooms! Casts! Painkillers!

That’s not supposed to happen on Family Day or any other day, for that matter!

Yes, Robbie Burns, the lines you penned are true.

So very true!

Fifty Shades of Grey should go to fifty shades of shredding “Don’t keep opening the fridge”, “turn off the lights when you leave a room”, and “don’t touch the thermostat” are all phrases that still linger in my head from my childhood.

Mum had every right to monitor me and my sister’s bad energy habits while we were still kids at home; that’s because Mum was paying the bills. She was keeping an eye on the cost of keeping a roof over our heads.

So it’s a little disconcerting to hear the Alberta Health Services had an $850,000 cell phone and data bill in 2014. Who was watching their spending? Certainly not my Mum. I find it a little outrageous that such carless

Jonah Kondro spending was committed by AHS on cell phone use. It is extremely likely that a few employees, that had their mitts on a company phone, were checking social media websites or cinema times for upcoming movie releases. This practice would rack up huge quantities of data charges

that us tax payers had to take care of. There is nothing worse than someone else sending a selfie that I had to pay for.

Aside from AHS admitting to a huge cellular bill, I’m more concerned with the forty million dollars spent turning E.L. James’ novel “Fifty Shades of Grey” into a film. Alberta’s economy is on the rocks, people are losing their jobs, spending cuts have been announced by Prentice, and Hollywood is liquidating millions on bad porn.

I bought and began to read the outbreak novel of James’ after its initial popularity had begun to plateau.

Quite soon into my reading I felt resentful – kind of like when you pour ex-

pired milk over a stale bowl of Cheerios. I struggled through the pages like my first attendance at a middle school dance. Eventually I gave up – on the book.

I made it two thirds of the way through the first novel out of the three that were written by James.

Regardless of the raw content within “Fifty Shades of Grey”, I saw it fit to not even finish the book – it was quite simply written badly. I didn’t want to risk letting the demons free from it pages in a sacrificial back yard fire pit burn, so I tossed the book into my recycling pile; a suitable demise awaited in the Rimbey Recycle Facility.

Long after I submitted my copy of James’ novel

into a certain recycling doom, I was wandering through Chapters in Red Deer. I was struggling to find an anthology of Rolling Stone Magazine articles Hunter S. Thompson wrote and literally stumbled over a pile of copies of “Fifty Shades of Grey” on the floor. There were multiple boxes of copies, near one aisle of bookshelves, which had created a literary inflection spilling all over the floor of Chapters. I ran out into the parking lot escaping potential intellectual drowning. The pages of “Fifty Shades of Grey” need to be put through fifty stages of shredding.

I’m scared for the misconceptions that any adolescent with an Ama-

zon gift card might get after purchasing and reading E.L. James’ book through an eReader; or for any youths that manage to gain access to the film’s theatrical viewing. If there is any money left in the Alberta Health Services cell phone budget, they should call Hollywood long-distance, and advise them to stop inflicting any more psychological harm in the form of bad books made into bad movies.

You won’t catch me buying a ticket to view “Fifty Shades of Grey” in the theatres. I’m more likely to be caught holding a bag of Skittles and walking in to see “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” in 3D.

Fas Gas Plus may be open in Crestomere by May long weekend

By Treena Mielke The May long weekend could be very busy for Greg Neilsen and his wife Barb, as they plan to open a Fas Gas Plus at Cresto-

mere.

The new Fas Gas Plus is now being completed and will include the completely renovated and rebuilt Crestomere Store.

and his wife have been working hard to renovate and clean up the old Crestomere Store and he is excited to be able to open the Fas Gas. “It is something the

community really needs and I’m really glad we will be able to serve the public with our new venture.

The new Fas Glas Plus will include liquor, groceries, fishing supplies,

cigarettes and lottery tickets.

Neilsen and his wife own the Bentley Subway and also ran the Subway in Rimbey and Ponoka for many years.

They are pleased to be able to bring their extensive experience in the industry to their new Fas Gas Plus at Crestomere and look forward to serving the community.

Sylvan Lake urgent care ‘message received’: Prentice Stuart Fullarton Sylvan Lake News Premier Jim Prentice said he’s heard loud and clear Sylvan Lake’s need for enhanced health care access.

Mayor Sean McIntyre brought up the issue with Prentice during his brief visit to Sylvan Lake with MLA Kerry Towle last Wednesday.

Prentice said while he wasn’t prepared to provide any insight into the fate of the town’s pursuit of enhanced health care, the issue remains very much on his radar.

“Kerry has talked to me about that, and she made it very clear coming here that that was the first and most important message I would hear, and it’s message received,” he said. “I’m not in a position today to respond, but I hear what you’re saying.”

McIntyre told Prentice urgent care was an “uncontested” top priority for the town, and urged his support.

“We understand you’re not here to make any spending announcements ... but what we’re hoping for and asking for is your support for that project to make sure that our 13,000-plus residents and over 20,000 regional residents have access to quality health care,” said McIntyre.

More bowling teams needed for the Bowl for Kids Sake

By Treena Mielke Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rimbey are looking for some community minded people to sign up for their big fundraiser challenge, Bowl for Kids Sake.

The event, to be held Sun., March 1 at Strikers Alley, promises to be fun for everyone.

“It really is a fun day,” said Annette Peck, BBBS program director. The money raised stays right here in the community,” she added.

The theme of the fundraiser is medieval so if bowling teams want to dress up in appropriate costumes such as princesses or knights it would add to the fun and also afford the opportunity to win a prize.

The goal of the Bowl for Kids Sake is to raise $15,000 to help Big Brothers Big Sisters, a local program which offers positive mentoring opportunities between responsible and caring adult volunteers and youth in need of additional attention and role models.

“The program has been fantastic,” said Peck. “We have 27 matches and we also run Go Girls through the program. Go Girls teaches young girls the importance of active living, balanced eating and feeling good about themselves.”

Teams participating in the Bowl for Kids fundraiser may consist of up to six people and there will be lots of door prizes, pledge-collection prizes and costume prizes.

The team entry fee of $300 may be increased by col-

lecting pledges online at www.rimbeybbbs.kintera.org. or with a pledge sheet which is available at the office of Big Brothers Big Sisters. Teams who collect their entry fees online will have more chances to win great prizes. The grand prize will go to the team that raises the greatest amount of money online.

Gold sponsors ($350) will have the company name displayed at the end of a bowling lane throughout the event and the name will also be printed in the Bowl for Kids Sake program.

Silver sponsors ($250) will have their company name displayed from the ceiling throughout the event. The name will also be printed in the Bowl for Kids Sake program. Bronze sponsors ($150) will have their name displayed on a table centerpiece throughout the event.

All sponsors including prize or refreshment sponsors will have their name promoted prior to the event.

She notes it is a great opportunity to learn more about resources and education available for anyone who wants to help children grow into healthy, happy adults.

“We’re really hoping to give parents more resources to use in their every day job of parenting. Children are everybody’s responsibility,” she added.

Powerful Moms and Super Dads, to be held Sat., Feb. 28 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre in Rimbey, promises to be a day packed full of positive, inspirational and informative tips.

Childcare services will be provided by the Nursery School and Parent Link. A puppet workshop will be held for the older children.

A homemade lunch and great entertainment will be provided for all who attend.

The day will kick off with a presentation by Line Perron from the University of Alberta.

During his presentation, Perron will talk about how relationships between parent (or caregiver) and child affect the child’s ability to feel connected, capable, counted and courageous.

A homemade lunch provided by staff from the library will follow. During lunch, carnival activities and a festival style circus workshop featuring the Leaping Lemurs and Lyne Gosselin will be held.

Over the past 15 years, Gosselin has performed across Canada, the United States, Japan and Dubai.

A specialist in trampoline, she taught and performed with l’Ecole de cirque du Quebec and she has created various aerial acts, ground acts and roving animation.

Gosselin shares her joy of circus with children through her circus workshops, Leaping Lemurs.

Face painting and a photo booth will also be set up.

Following lunch, Keir Kutney, a regional behaviour educator, will make a presentation.

Kutney is recognized across Alberta for his understanding of children’s behaviour and his ability to provide concrete strategies to better manage this behaviour.

The foundation of his practice has been built around the Child and Youth Care principles of managing and modifying behavior.

He focuses on building relationships around trust and respect while implementing various strategies to engage youth.

Following the afternoon presentation, world class acrobats, the Leaping Lemurs and Lyne Gosselin will perform.

Family Day activities in Bentley attracted good turnout

By June Norvila There were two special activities offered in Bentley on Family Day, February 16.

The Bentley Museum once again offered a free open house from 1-4 p.m. with visitors welcome to explore between the society’s three buildings on their own or with guided tours by society member volunteers.

The museum also sponsored the always-popular free horse-dawn wagon rides around town with pickup and drop-off in front of the museum. Owner Stuart Lyster and daughter Holly Lyster who drove around town with families and individuals seated on straw bales placed on the rubber-tired wagon kept Duke and Doc busy.

Coffee or hot chocolate, and cookies were served, encouraging visitors to sit and visit for a while in the main building, the Pico house.

Both the Ag Building with rearranged displays and the newer building were also open.

A lot of work has been ongoing as was evidenced by the improved displays and display areas and the more life-like mannequins now showing some of the past fashions and uniforms they have in their collection. A Dick Damron section is vey impressive, along with many more areas and artifacts.

Admission is free. Just call Cora (403-748-2455) or Clara (403-748-2350) or Betty (403-48-2744) to make an appointment. The museum is open regular hours during the summer.

Free turkey dinners were served to anyone and everyone who cared to come to the Bentley Community Church on Family Day starting at 3:00 p.m. The gymnasium, decorated in a bright Valentine’s Day ‘love and family’ theme, was packed with people, full of the festive scents of good food, and resounding with the sounds of happy, visiting guests.

Stop the diet binge cycle

By Lisa Ferentz, Despite what all those weight loss ads tell you, being able to fit into a size zero bikini should not be your greatest life accomplishment.

Nor will it help you achieve true happiness, inner peace, self-confidence or self-worth.

Yet our culture puts such an emphasis on appearance and thinness it’s difficult to not be swayed by society’s version of beauty and how the multibillion dollar dieting industry tells you to look. Young girls poring over images of their favorite celebrities get the message loud and clear; if you want to be successful, rich, or in a relationship with a good looking guy, start dieting.

There are many gateways into eating disordered thinking and behaving, and dieting is one of the most common and dangerous. With the help of countless weight loss programs, millions of people set themselves up to half starve all day, avoiding foods that are “bad”. You might be someone who tries to severely restrict your intake of calories throughout the day.

You can easily skip breakfast, distract through lunch with a busy work schedule, and even white knuckle putting off dinner. But by the evening hours your body is hungry and angry! It needs sustenance to accomplish everything you want it to do.

When you push your body to produce without giving it the fuel it needs to make that happen, it’s like demanding your car go 100 miles on an empty tank of gas.

Since that can’t happen, you are now set up to binge.

In a tired and hungry state, your judgment is impaired and impulsivity increases.

In an attempt to rebalance the lack of food, you’re vulnerable to going overboard, compensating for the profound dip in blood sugar and depleted energy. Bingeing is not the same thing as merely overeating. Three extra cookies is overeating- the whole bag followed by other snacks is a binge. When you binge you probably do it in a detached state. Many people claim they don’t even taste what they’re eating, or experience standing outside of themselves watching the binge without the ability to stop.

Area farmers learn benefits of renewable energy in workshop Jasmine O’Halloran–Han Sylvan Lake News A well-attended workshop provided area farmers with information on the benefits of using renewable solar and wind energy sources at the Eckville Community Centre last Thursday.

Rob Harlan, executive director of the Solar Energy Society of Alberta, discussed the benefits of solar panels, while Dr. Tim Weis, policy director for the Canadian Wind Energy Association, discussed the benefits of wind energy.

Different topics were discussed, such as the benefits of using solar panels and wind turbines, choosing a provider, generating and selling power, hiring a contractor and the benefits of buying locally as opposed to online.

Harlan said the event proved helpful for farmers to attend as they are used to making intelligent, long-range financial investments and have solar access with little shading on their land.

“I think most of the farmers are interested in reducing their bills and putting in a utility inter-tie solar system on their farm,” Harlan said. “It’s the electric technology they are interested in. They want to be small power producers and sell it to the grid.”

Harlan said the alternative energy sources are necessary in battling pollution, rising

costs and the finite nature of fossil fuels, and global warming.

“The whole world is making a transition towards a less expensive renewable source of energy,” Harlan said. “Alberta has the opportunity to join that process, and the long-range benefits are significant.”

One of the most prominent benefits of using renewable energy is financial savings; after the initial investment has been made, there aren’t any ongoing fuel or maintenance costs.

“They last a long time,” Harlan said.

“They could last 30 or 40 years, so the economics of it are really compelling. The original solar cell that was invented in the 1950s is still running.”

There may be a perception that renewable energy is more expensive, Weis said. But he assured that isn’t the case.

“The trick with renewables is all the money is up front,” he said. “That’s the trick and (also) where the downside is. It may make sense in the long run, but you still need all the money up front. You need two things: you need to get that money up front and that project has to work for a long time.”

The investment cost is scale dependent, but Weis said investments range anywhere from five or six thousand dollars to 20 or 30 thousand dollars. He said that some farmers in Lethbridge were buying half-million-

Holocaust survivor speaks to students at Rimbey high school

By Treena Mielke When holocaust survivor Dr. Eva Olsson spoke at the Rimbey high school, the student body was strangely quiet, and during her dynamic presentation, it seemed one truly could have heard a pin drop, so riveting were her words.

Although her English was laced with a heavy ac-

cent, the 90-year-old survivor seemed to grab the attention of her audience immediately.

While Olsson talked, slides depicting surviving scenes of the holocaust played on a screen set up behind her.

“This is not a video game,” she said. “And it’s not a Hollywood movie.”

During her hour and a half presentation, Olsson took the students back to a time of horror, a time when unspeakable acts of bullying occurred at the hands of Nazi soldiers.

Several hands were raised when she asked the question “How many of you have been bullied?”

bullied me and I didn’t make a sound. I didn’t want to end up with a bullet in my back.”

Olsson stressed that the horrors of the holocaust were the result of hate in action.

“What was the cause of the holocaust?” she said. “It was one word – hate.”

Treating others with kindness and respect no matter what their race, religion or country of origin is a golden rule which needs to be strictly adhered to, she said.

“How can we achieve peace if we don’t accept each other?” she said. “You are being disrespectful to the country your ancestors came from (if you are a bully),” she said.

Anyone who watches bullying happen needs to take action, she said.

“Hitler could not have gotten away with what he did without bystanders,” she said. “The worst thing you can do is remain silent.

Don’t remain silent or the bully will get away with it.’

Born in Szatmar, Hungary Olsson was one of six

children of a poor Hasidic Jewish family.

As the war raged around them, the family was one of many families placed in a ghetto. Living conditions were primitive, but the young Eva still had her family around her.

“It was okay. I had a mom, dad, brothers, sisters.”

But on May 15, 1944 that all changed. The family was told to pack their bags and within two hours was forced to march seven kilometers from the ghetto to a railway station.

It proved to be the beginning of a nightmare that did not end until British and Canadian soldiers finally liberated the prisoners.

After being one of the Jews who survived a harrowing train ride where passengers fought for breath in packed box cars, Olsson found herself at AuschwitzBirkenau – a Nazi death camp set up in occupied Poland.

In a voice sometimes breaking with emotion, Olsson told how a Nazi officer and physician known as the

Angel of Death who, with a simple glance to the right or the left, decided who would live and who would die.

“It was a killing factory,” she said.

She was to find out later members of her family including her mother were killed in the gas chambers.

“My mother was 49 years old when she was murdered,” she said. “Who could do this? Animals!

“It was people with hate in their hearts,” she said.

As Olsson continued, the students remained riveted to their chairs, and all eyes were on the speaker.

The prisoners were forced into the gas chambers and the air was filled with their screams, but after 20 minutes it was all over and there was only silence, she said.

Her words and the images that flashed on the slides brought tears to some, as the horror was relived.

During her time in a slave labor camp, Olsson barely survived, living mostly on bread that was 70 per cent sawdust and dirty putrid water.

Like many of the other prisoners she became very ill with typhoid fever and dysentery and lay on a straw floor covered with human waste awaiting a certain death.

But even through the long dark days she never gave up hope and on April 15, 1945 at 11 a.m. four hours before prisoners were all to be shot, those who had survived in the slave labor camp were liberated by British and Canadian soldiers.

Olsson recalled how sick she was and how the medics had placed a red cross on her forehead, indicating she needed immediate attention.

After she recovered, she and her younger sister, the only surviving members of her family, went to Sweden as refugees. Eva would later marry Rude Olsson, a young Swede she met while living there, and move to Canada.

Olsson gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, but only the baby boy survived.

Olsson’s husband later died of complications caused by a car accident.

As a single mother without family, education or job training and harboring the fear that her story could cause harm to come to her son, Olsson remained silent about her past for 50 years.

But her veil of silence was shattered when she spoke to her granddaughter’s elementary school

class. That first speaking engagement led to countless presentations made at schools, colleges, universities and numerous groups and organizations.

She has also written numerous books.

“The only way humanity will survive is if me becomes we,” she said. “The only thing that affects every

one of us is our attitude.”

“Unconditional love and acceptance of other human beings. Pass it on to other children,” she implored.

Grade 11 student Brendon Freerksen purchased one of Olssen’s books for his mother after the presentation. He said her talk was well worth hearing.

“It was unbelievable. It was a once in a lifetime experience.”

Eva Olsson was brought to Rimbey through the Rimbey Library. She also

spoke at the Rimbey United Church and the elementary school.

FRAYN Arthur “Art” Melvin Frayn of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at the age of 83 years.

Art will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his beloved wife, Judy; two sons, Tom (Elaine) Frayn of Rimbey; and Murray Frayn of Gull Lake; and two daughters, Sharron (Leroy) Juuti of Bentley; and Lana Curle (Bryan Wiese) of Rimbey; as well as fifteen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. He will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his sister, Elvey Brown of Calgary; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many cherished friends. Art was predeceased by his parents; his son, Randy in 2008; and two brothers, Len in 2014; and Ken in 2012.

A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Art’s Life will be held at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre, Rimbey on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. with the Reverend Deborah Laing officiating. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer.

Interment will be held at a later date in the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Art’s Memory may be made directly to the Canadian Diabetes Association, #6, 5015 - 48 Street, Red Deer, Alberta T4N 1S9; or to the Kitchener #95 Masonic Lodge, c/o Box 1999, Rimbey, Alberta, T0C 2J0.

Stop the diet binge cycle Continued from page 14.

Bingeing leads to a state of physical pain and fatigue, as well as intense feelings of guilt, shame, powerlessness, self-hatred, and a profound loss of control. These thoughts and experiences set you up to “make-up” for the binge by starving again. This is the beginning of the restrict-bingerestrict cycle that creates medical complications, emotional and psychological pain, and can lead to serious impairment.

It’s not easy to consciously choose to ignore the images and messages that tell you what you should and should not eat or how much you should weigh. But there are important steps you can take to help break the starve-binge cycle, re-claim your body, and begin to focus, instead, on more meaningful ways to achieve a true sense of selfworth.

1. Honor and respect the uniqueness of your body and how it was meant to look.

2. Make the conscious choice to listen to your body so you eat when you’re hungry, and become more aware of when you’re full.

3. Give yourself permission to enjoy what you eat!

Take your time to taste and appreciate it. Your brain can only register fullness if it is “present” for the experience of eating.

4. Stop dieting! Focus instead on portion size and eating balanced meals and snacks.

5. Don’t skip meals. They set you up for bingeing at the end of the day.

6. Think about food as

a positive source of energy and sustenance, rather than a source of comfort, reward, or a weapon.

7. Stop labeling foods as “good” or “bad.” That adds an unnecessary emotional component to eating and sets you up to diet.

8. Decide how much power you’re going to give to the number on the scale, and the extent to which you will allow it to define your worth.

9. Cultivate a practice of gratitude for all of the amazing things your body does for you everyday!

10. Choose to spend less energy thinking and worrying about food, calories, and the shape of your stomach.

Instead, re-channel that energy into hobbies, loving relationships, personal and professional growth, paying it forward, and making a meaningful difference in the world.

Legislation in Bill C-525 raises many controversial questions and concerns Dear Editor, Albertans have long had a complicated relationship with unions. Historically, we have the lowest union membership rates at 23.5 per cent compared to the Canadian average of 31.5 per cent (Employment and Social Development Canada). Public opinion about unions is equally complicated in our province.

It is no wonder then, that Prime Minister Stephen Harper gifted Conservative MP Blaine Calkins with the private member's Bill C-525. Private members bills are a way a backbencher can enact a law that is close to their hearts, or alternatively a way the caucus can pass a bill without identifying themselves too closely with it, if deemed too controversial.

Bill C-525 is one such controversial bill.

In the past, when a group of workers tried to form a union, they needed 50 per cent plus one of votes cast as a “yes.” We call that democracy. No matter what your opinion of unions, they are run by democratic principles. Under the new Bill C-525 however, workers now need 50 per cent of all eligible voters in order to form a union, which means ballots not cast are automatically considered a “no.” This is NOT democracy. If the same rules applied to the last election, Stephen Harper would not be our Prime Minister, nor world Blaine Calkins be a Member of Parliament.

Bill C-525 also makes it easier to decertify a union requiring only 40 per cent plus one to get rid of an existing union, a further insult to injured democracy.

Why then, you might ask, was this private member’s bill pushed through Parliament during a Conservative majority? Why was this bill not just included in one of the massive omnibus bills the Conservative government is so fond of? And why was MP Blaine Calkins “chosen” to be the author of the bill?

Is he really that passionate about union busting, or is this part of something bigger?

The answer is simply that Bill C-525 is a bad piece of legislation, not only in its content, but also in its drafting. The bill itself was criticized in the Senate for its numerous flaws, but passed anyway by the

Conservative majority chamber (Huffington Post - Senators Find Mistakes in Tory Bill C-525, Pass It Anyway). More importantly though, Bill C-525 is a bad piece of legislation because it is intentionally

anti-democratic and an affront to the principles on which Canada is founded.

The Stephen Harper government thought Central Albertans wouldn't care about this assault on our democracy. The 2015 gen-

eral election will be an opportunity for us to tell the Conservatives that we do care, about our country and our democratic rights. The question is whether Blaine Calkins, the MP running in Red Deer-Lacombe

and author of the flawed bill, will resign if he, once again, doesn't receive 50 per cent of eligible voters.
