Fishermen’s friends flock to Pearkes Daniel Palmer News staff

Lures and baits won’t be needed to hook hundreds of outdoor enthusiasts at Pearkes Recreation Centre this weekend for the annual Victoria Boat and Fishing Show.

The Feb. 20 to 22 event includes exhibitors ranging from Ducks Unlimited to Fisheries and Oceans Canada, local hunting and fishing shops and the South Vancouver Island Anglers Coalition.

“Per capita, Victoria has more independent anglers than all of B.C. It’s amazing,” said Darren Wright, co-owner at Island Outfitters and long-time sponsor of the boat and fishing show. “Just drive around our roads, there’s a boat in every driveway.

Fishing is very good here and it’s protected. We’re lucky to live here and be able to fish so locally.”

The fishing season is off to a strong start this year after Fisheries and Oceans Canada opened up halibut fishing on Feb. 1, several weeks earlier than in previous years. Strict fishing licences ensure a sustainably managed population as anglers are allowed a set number of catches per season.

Wright’s co-owner, Ward Bond, will be presenting a talk on halibut fishing each day during this weekend’s event. The company’s six charter boats have already been out on 15 trips since the halibut season kicked off in waters around Race Rocks ecological reserve, Constance Bank and elsewhere in and around the Juan de Fuca strait.

While charters range between $500 and $800 for a daily trip, those with more boating experience (and a boating licence) can rent fishing boats from various local compaines and make their own way.

Though be warned, says Bond, boaters need proper training on ocean tides and currents before venturing into the strait.

opens at 1 p.m. today (Feb. 20) at Pearkes Rec Centre and also includes an indoor air gun range sponsored by the Victoria Fish and Game Protective Association.

Weekend tickets to the show are $9 for men, $7 seniors and kids and teens under 18 and women are free. Bring a food donation to The Mustard Seed food bank and receive $2 off an admission.

No charges in dog mauling The parents of a then-16-day-old baby who was mauled by the family dog won’t be facing charges, it was revealed Tuesday.

The Dec. 28 incident left the infant girl with permanent scarring on her face after she was rushed to hospital from the McLellan Street home in the Glanford area.

The dog, a pit bullRottweiler cross that had been declared dangerous in 2007, was put down the same day.

Crown lawyers simply did not have enough evidence to prosecute charges of criminal negligence causing bodily harm, said Saanich Police Sgt. Steve Eassie.

“The underlying factor here is to use extreme caution when introducing a new family member, specifically a baby, into a family where you already have pets,” Eassie said.

Coun. Vic Derman wants the District of Saanich to become a “world leader” in sustainable development, and he hopes a citizen-led forum will be just one small catalyst for change.

On Saturday, Derman will present his pet project, The Natural City, to residents, business owners and politicians who will gather to discuss the future of the Douglas corridor.

“Like it or not, we’re in a worldwide competition for wealth, skill and talent,” said Derman, who has pieced together global shifts in urban planning that show how pedestrian, cycling and public transit infrastructure can transform cities.

“We want those people, and we need them for our future economy. But what’s going to attract them here? I would argue quality of life and place is in fact, for Saanich and Greater Victoria, an economic ace.”

Quality of life, he says, includes a focus on approving new projects with nature and sustainability top of mind. Rainwater management is one example of how cities can influence impact on the environment through smart policy, he said.

The City of Victoria, for example, incentivizes homeowners to retain and distribute rain water on their property instead of sending it straight towards the street drain.

“Another huge issue is sustainable energy.

People don’t know how far solar energy has come,” said Derman, who has relied on a solarpowered hot water tank at his home since 1980.

The solar energy covers 100 per cent of his hot water costs in the summer, and about 70 per cent of costs in the shoulder seasons.

“Since 2008, the cost of panels has gone down by over 80 per cent,” he said. “Texas feels within a couple of years, solar energy will be competitive with gas energy. In Britain, the feeling is solar will be cost competitive by 2020. And what are we doing here?”

Susan Belford is organizing the all-day Douglas corridor talk, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Garth Homer Auditorium (813 Darwin Ave.). She says Derman’s vision will provide a jumping off point for residents who want to weigh in on a pending local area plan.

“The corridor needs to be something other than a place we pass through,” said Belford, echoing Derman’s sentiments that urban street design should be ‘much more than A-to-B conduits.’

The City of Victoria is also launching its own local area plan for the Burnside-Gorge neighbourhood, which covers the Victoria area of Douglas Street. Belford said Victoria Coun. Marianna Alto has agreed to stop by Saturday’s event, which Belford hopes will help both municipalities work together on a co-ordinated Douglas corridor plan.

“For Saanich, we wanted to make sure there were a wide number of stakeholders involved, and this is the first step in that conversation,” Belford said.

Organizers will be forwarding responses to the Capital Regional District, Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, Saanich and B.C. Transit, she added.

Derman said the region’s municipal governments have been slow on the uptake of the CRD’s pedestrian and cycling master plan, which was completed in 2012.

“For a dozen years at the CRD, we’ve had walking-cycling-transit as our priority modes.

In 10 years, we’ve changed virtually nothing,” he said.

Derman said the next steps towards a sustainable Saanich will take place at the council table, where strong adherence to sustainable, longterm planning needs to be followed. Provincial and federal governments will also need to step in with long-term funding if municipalities hope to create better transportation modes.

“We have to be very careful with Douglas Street. It was seen as a conduit to move people from downtown Victoria to the western communities,” Derman said. “That’s not good urban planning. That’s a huge highway in a city, and it destroys neighbourhoods and kills value.”

Property tax could rise 4.5 per cent Daniel Palmer News staff

Saanich residents could be looking at a 4.5-percent tax hike in addition to rising sewer and water rates, if the District passes a proposed budget in the coming months.

Saanich embarking on its annual budget presentation to councillors and the mayor over the coming weeks, with committee of the whole meetings scheduled for Feb. 24 and March 2. Residents are able to provide public input at these meetings.

On Tuesday, council got its first peek at the 2015/16 budget numbers. For the average homeowner, this year’s increase proposal breaks down as follows: • $99 increase in property taxes • $43 increase in sewer rate • $26 increase in water utility • $5 increase in garbage collection fees Saanich’s budget is $245 million for 2015, rising about $4.5 million from last year. The increase is primarily due to: • $2.8-million increase in salaries and MSP premiums for Saanich’s 1,600 employees • $1.9 million request from the Saanich Police Board for “operational shortfalls” and for a fleet and technology replacement reserve fund. (Of note, Chief Bob Downie told council the average police cruiser has a useful life of only four years.)

Finance director Valla Tinney noted at Tuesday’s meeting that “new tax,” which is derived from new development throughout the District, has dropped significantly in the past year. The resulting tax burden on existing homeowners is larger as a consequence, she said.

“As the non-market change gets smaller and smaller, the existing taxpayer takes on those increases as a result,” Tinney told councillors.

“However, we have got new grant funding from the restructuring of the gas tax fund. That can only be used for specific projects, but it is good news.”

All operational costs have been held at 2014 levels, with the exception of “critical capacity” requests from each department, Tinney said.

Get smart on budget talks Financial planning is upon the District of Saanich once again, but you’d never know it with the piddly turnout at the first unveiling of the 2015-2019 draft budget on Tuesday.

Property taxes are slated to rise by 4.5 per cent in the coming year, if the budget passes without adjustment.

Those numbers are mostly due to unchangeable salary and MSP increases, as well as vehicle and equipment replacement costs for the Saanich Police Department. But there are big “asks” by some departments for what are touted as critical needs. Saanich PD is also requesting a reserve fund to help cover those replacements in future years.

Why a reserve fund didn’t exist in previous years is yet to be determined.

The budget also earmarks $100,000 for the much-touted governance review, the details of which will congeal slightly in March when a staff report comes back to council.

There’s also an estimated $150,000 needed to install webcasting of council meetings, which will be funded through non-tax sources (possibly 2014 surplus cash, but first needing a decision from council). The City of Victoria installed its webcasting in the fall of 2013 at a cost of $50,000 for equipment and software, with another $17,000 annually to operate and maintain the service. North Saanich pays about $10,000 each year for webcasting; Sooke spends $7,500 annually.

Other eye-popping numbers include $1 million for telephone assessment and upgrades at municipal hall and $1 million for a financial software upgrade.

Comparisons with other municipalities will be fundamental before council can make an informed decision and sign off on each of these budget line items.

And don’t forget: financial planning meetings are open to public input. Check out the budget online at saanich.ca and then attend the Feb. 24 and/or March 2 committee of the whole meetings. Make sure your voice is heard before the tax man cometh.

Re: Biologist blasts District over environmental bylaw confusion, News (Feb. 13) Is it ethical to lock down a person’s property and their property rights if an environmental value Saanich is trying to protect doesn’t exist on the property and hasn’t for decades?

What a surprise. Seems like the folks at Saanich municipal hall have been keeping all the information to themselves again.

Why weren’t the affected homeowners notified about the changes and restrictions that were made to their properties and the financial burden they would be stuck with.

Who really benefits from the EDPA and who suffers? What other secrets are they keeping. Hopefully some positive change and openness will start to happen and politicians and staff will have the best interests of the property owners/taxpayers in mind in the future and not in protect their own fiefdoms.

Humans must learn to co-exist

Many Greater Victoria residents are sensitive toward the plight of other species.

Deer, rabbits, etc. are sentient beings. Although some humans still assume we are the only species

capable of emotions and physical pain, the truth is humans are not alone in feeling joy and suffering.

As for the term “cull,” what’s with that? A human word invented to cover up our guilt and insensitivity sentencing other species to die simply because we find them inconvenient to our way of life.

Thoughtful, compassionate solutions for coexistence are there.

Those who care enough for deer to give their time and energy to voice concern over the planned killing of a beautiful species are a few examples of compassionate Canadians working selflessly to move us positively forward to a balanced future.

Good hearing, poor comprehension?

The number of people who can hear well, but can’t understand what’s being said, is increasing. This is most evident in conversations and watching television. A newlydeveloped hearing chip is designed to restore speech comprehension without being noticeable in the ear.

A lot of people have poor comprehension, though they actually still hear well. It becomes noticeable in conversation, watching television and asking family to repeat what’s been said. A potential cause can be undetected loss in the high-frequency range. This means the sensory cells in the cochlea that hear high-range sounds are damaged as a result of circulatory disorders, diabetes, sudden hearing loss or workplace noise. Hearing loss in the highfrequency range makes speech sound muffled and unclear. The person with hearing loss mixes up, or can no longer hear, consonants like s, f, t, k, h and g.

These values are then input into the new Venture hearing chip in the Audéo V, which precisely takes into account and balances the frequency range of the person being tested. The test phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role a new technology called “Autosense OS” plays. The chip recognizes where the person being spoken to is located and amplifies only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this significantly augments speech comprehension, especially in conversation.

Expecting budget surpluses for the next three years, the B.C. government is ending the deduction of spousal child support from social assistance payments and providing modest benefits for other low-income earners.

Finance Minister Mike de Jong said the current fiscal year is expected to finish with a surplus of almost $900 million, due mainly to better than expected personal and corporate income tax revenues, strong retail sales and a one-time adjustment of federal tax payments.

After an additional $3 billion to the ever-growing health care budget and $576 million more for education over the next three years, the surplus for 2015-16 is projected to be $284 million.

A target of single parents and poverty advocacy organizations in recent years, the “clawback” of child support payments ends Sept. 1. That is expected to leave about $32 million more over the next three years in the pockets of the parents who receive child support along with income assistance and disability payments, a benefit to 3,200 families and 5,400 children.

Community Living B.C., responsible for developmentally disabled adults, gets an addi-

tional $106 million over three years, and $20 million is added to the general budget for income assistance. Caseloads for both are expected to increase and individual payment rates stay the same.

This is also the budget that ends a two-year increase of 2.1 per cent in tax on income more than $150,000 a year. The provincial income tax rate for that tax bracket returns to 14.7 per cent, which de Jong said is part of the lowest personal income tax rates in the country.

At the low end of the income scale, the exemption from paying any personal income tax goes to the first $19,000 earned, up from $18,000.

NDP leader John Horgan said reducing income taxes for the top two per cent of wage earners cost the B.C. government $230 million that should have gone mainly to middle income earners.

Horgan and NDP finance critic Carole James focused on the measure in Tuesday’s B.C. budget to end the tax increase on income over $150,000 a year.

They acknowledged other measures to help low-income people but Horgan said “the middle class was left behind today.”

James said middle-income families are taking the brunt of rate increases for car insurance, ferry fares and BC Hydro, and the services available to them are declining.

“We’re seeing hallway medicine. We’re seeing overcrowded classrooms. We’re seeing less support for seniors,” James said.

An early childhood tax benefit begins April 1, with up to $660 a year for each child up to the age of six, designed to assist with child care costs.

This is also the year the province’s training and education savings grant begins to be paid out for children who reach six years old. It is a one-time payment of $1,200 born since Jan. 1, 2007, to be placed in a registered education savings plan.

Horgan pointed to modest tax breaks for high technology and film production industries, while four times as much government assistance is going to resource roads to develop B.C.’s natural gas export business.

With a surplus nearing $1 billion for the fiscal year ending in March, Horgan said his priorities would have included help for manufacturing in the forest sector to take advantage of a lower Canadian dollar. editor@saanichnews.com

Leonard was appointed for the role by the Government of Canada. The position pays an annual retainer between $14,000 to $17,000 plus per diems for monthly board and committee meetings.

Bullying and Cyberbullying Bullying Bullying happens when there is an imbalance of power; where someone purposely and repeatedly says or does hurtful things to someone else.

Bullying can occur one on one or in a group(s) of people. There are many different forms of bullying: ◼ Physical bullying (using your body or objects to cause harm): includes hitting, punching, kicking, spitting or breaking someone else’s belongings. ◼ Verbal bullying (using words to hurt someone): includes name calling, put-downs, threats and teasing. ◼ Social bullying (using your friends and relationships to hurt someone): includes spreading rumours, gossiping, excluding others from a group or making others look foolish or unintelligent. This form of bullying is most common among girls (Canadian Children’s Rights Council).

Bullying and the Law

Cyberbullying involves the use of communication technologies such as the Internet, social networking sites, websites, email, text messaging and instant messaging to repeatedly intimidate or harass others.

Cyberbullying includes: • Sending mean or threatening emails or text/instant messages.

• Posting embarrassing photos of someone online.

• Creating a website to make fun of others.

• Pretending to be someone by using their name.

• Tricking someone into revealing personal or embarrassing information and sending it to others.

Cyberbullying affects victims in different ways than traditional bullying. It can follow a victim everywhere 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from school, to the mall and all the way into the comfort of their home - usually safe from traditional forms of bullying.

Bullying can be a traumatic experience, and some forms of bullying can even be considered illegal.

These include: • Threats - whether done face to face, online, over the phone or through text messaging.

• Assaults - including pushing, tripping, slapping, hitting or spitting.

• Theft of personal items - like a backpack, books, electronic devices, etc.

• Harassment - repeated tormenting online, with texts, phone calls and/or emails.

• Sexual Exploitation - sharing videos or photos with nudity of people under 18.

• Hate crime - bullying based on ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, etc.

For all of these criminal offences, it is important to notify your local police detachment or report it to CYBERTIP.CA. Based on the available information, police will decide if an investigation is warranted and whether charges may be laid.

What You Can Do Youth If you are a victim of bullying • Walk away or leave the online conversation.

• Keep track of the bullying (write it down and/or save a screenshot of the online message).

• Tell a trusted adult. If you don’t trust anyone or need to speak with someone urgently, contact the confidential and toll-free Kids Help Phone.

• Report the bullying to school administrators.

• Report criminal offences, such as threats, assaults and sexual exploitation to the local police detachment.

• Report unwanted text messages to your telephone service provider.

Over time, youth who are bullied or bully others find their own ways of dealing with it. While some victims/bullies may become depressed and begin to withdraw socially, others react aggressively and turn to violence.

Dangers for Children and Adolescents Who Are Bullied: • Depression • Social anxiety, loneliness, isolation • Stress related health problems (e.g., headaches, stomach aches) • Low self esteem • School absenteeism and academic problems • Aggressive behaviours

If you know someone who is being bullied...

Most types of bullying go on as long as someone is watching and laughing. As a bystander, know that you have the power to stop the bullying. 60% of the time, bullying stops in less than 10 seconds when someone steps in (Kids Help Phone).

• If you feel it’s safe to do so, tell the bully to stop.

• Find friends/students/youth or an adult who can help stop it.

• Befriend the person being bullied and lead them away from the situation.

• Report it to a teacher or school staff.

• Fill out an anonymous letter and drop it off to a teacher or any adult you trust.

Adults If you know or think that a child is a victim of bullying...

• Talk to them - Let them know that they can trust you and that they shouldn’t deal with bullying alone.

• Help them: • document the bullying; • report unwanted text messages to their tele phone service provider, or cyberbullying to social media sites; • report the bullying to school administrators; and • report criminal offences, such as threats, as saults, harassment and sexual exploitation to the local police detachment.

The view from Poplar Grove over Okanagan Lake is spectacular as is the Syrah, which, like the best of the winery’s reds, benefits from the extra aging afforded by cellaring it for a couple of years longer than the norm. A three-kilometre side trip to Red Rooster netted a Reserve Syrah, which exuded yummy plum and cherry from its neck, once opened! One more stop before a relaxing evening spent staring over the lake while sipping on a suite balcony at the Summerland Waterfront Resort. The snowy and very icy single track to the new Sage Hills Vineyard in Summerland required careful navigation. The reward was a barrel tasting with winemaker Andrea Lee and vineyard manager Keenan Thrussell. The new vintage had yet to be bottled but a rosé version hit the spot later!

Mercedes gets a grip with winterland

Montreal – If there is one part of this vast country that knows about winter and winter driving, it is the province of Quebec.

Winter weather can stretch from November until April, which is why this frost bitten part of the country mandates winter tires on all vehicles and was the perfect spot to showcase two products from Mercedes Benz, the B-Class and CLA-Class.

Both are now equipped with Mercedes 4Matic all wheel drive (AWD) system. Touching down in Montreal, the outside temperature was heading to minus twenty three overnight and minus nineteen for a daytime high, plus snow, lots of snow.

Looks

Both the B-Class hatchback and CLA sedan are based on the Mercedes small car platform that is also shared with the GLA compact crossover. The B and GLA are sold with front wheel drive (FWD) and now AWD. The latest B-Class was introduced a few years ago and gets a mild facelift, including a new grille, lower chin spoiler, different

wheels and a new accent line down the side. The CLA was just introduced last year so external updates will have to wait another couple of years. The B-Class is a taller hatchback design that provides a useful package for young families, including bigger rear windows and a large hatch and cargo space.

Inside

Both the B-Class and CLA receive nice updates for 2015 on the inside. Both share the same dash so updating both made sense. The screen that sits front and centre on the dash, like and iPad is larger, moving to a standard 7-inch screen or optional 8-inch screen on cars equipped with navigation.

This screen is controlled with a small knob between the front seats. Other updates include a sportier and very comfortable steering wheel, a revised stereo head unit and a new instrument cluster behind the steering wheel. Heated seats are now standard equipment for 2015 but heated rear seats and a heated steering

wheel are not available in these cars. The B-Class 4Matic is a $2,200 premium over the FWD version, starting at $33,500. The CLA has the same $2,200 charge for AWD, starting at $36,800. One nice feature available on the CLA is an “exclusive” package that includes a leather dashboard with French stitching for $2,300.

To explore the abilities of these two new products, the Olympic rowing basin used for the 1976 Montreal games was partially plowed, exposing sheet ice with a fresh sprinkling of snow. This provided a great example of the limits of grip and the abilities of the electronic stability program, in conjunction with the AWD system. On sheet ice, there is no grip, so sliding is easy. It was on the rural roads outside of Montreal near the ski resort of Bromont that the 4Matic system proved useful. The system is designed to provide power to the front wheels as often as possible and instantly transfer power to the rear wheels when extra grip is needed, it all happens in a nanosecond. The maximum amount of power sent to the rear wheels if fifty percent. I noticed that these cars, when placed in “sport” mode actually allow the car to slip and slide without the electronics being too oppressive.

Mercedes has had enormous success with its 4Matic AWD system, accounting for eighty five percent of its sales. With the introduction of these two new models in late 2014, the number has jumped to over ninety percent. This opens up the safety and stability of AWD to a larger market.

One thing to keep in mind is these two products offer great value if the buyer keeps and eye on the options. The “must have” package include the Premium Package for an additional $3800 on both the B-Class and CLA. This includes automatic climate control, a huge panoramic sunroof, rear view camera, blind spot system and navigation. This brings the 4Matic price on the B-Class to $37,300 and $40,600 on the CLA. Not overly expensive for a Mercedes Benz product but pricier than the starting price suggests. Should you consider the 4Matic version of the B-Class and CLA? A legacy of controversy

arrangement so that they could live together harmoniously with the new settlers.

The inhabitation and occupation of land by First Nations was not and indeed still is not viewed within a European definition of ownership. Douglas’s assumption that “empty” land, unoccupied by fields or villages, was somehow disposable did not fit with indigenous principles of ancestral territorial rights.

Douglas stated that the indigenous peoples would have the same “rights and privileges” as the colonists once they complied with the land treaties, which certainly sounds equitable.

Modern scholars, however, tend to view this as an attempt to ‘domesticate’ First Nations and, worst of all, disconnect them from the land upon which their cultural identity had been dependant for thousands of years.

Douglas stopped negotiating treaties in 1854 as the expansion of the colony was slow and relatively few settlers were arriving.

This all changed when the Fraser River Gold Rush of 1858 hit, and 25,000 gold miners flooded to Vancouver Island and then over to the mainland in search of their fortunes.

Today, most of us who reside in the Victoria area live on land that was obtained as the result of the Douglas Treaties, and their validity is still regularly tested in court.

Saanich’s Amelia Wells benefitted from the hard work of parents, club members and dedicated nordic skiers who shovelled snow onto trails at the B.C. Midget Championships (for nine to 12-year-olds) last week.

Wells, 12, survived the series of heats to win gold in the demanding 300-metre skate competition.

The Central middle school student nearly won bronze in the 2 kilometre classic, finishing less than a second behind the third place finisher.

Mount Washington’s cross country and downhill ski areas closed for the season in the week

following Wells’ medal win.

Wells competed against other 2002-born girls and qualified to compete in the B.C. The results qualified her for this weekend’s B.C. Cross Country Championships (for all age groups) at Crystal Mountain near Kelowna, Feb. 20-22.

Wells will face a deeper field of talent this weekend as some of the province’s elite 2002 athletes were not at the Mt. Washington meet.

To make Mt. Washington happen, a group of dedicated skiers and parents shovelled relentlessly, transporting snow on toboggans to to fill barren spots along the trails.

It was the second time Wells has won gold in the 300m skate at the B.C. Midget Championships. reporter@saanichnews.com

The real estate market is diverse and changes with clients’ needs.

In Greater Victoria, “expert” real estate agents are specialized in everything from waterfront properties, condominiums and senior clients. Like any buyer in the real estate market looking for a specialized property, you want someone with the knowledge to help you find your dream location.

Seniors’ real estate specialist Vicky Turner says seniors are generally moving from properties they’ve lived at for numerous years.

“Many of them have owned real estate for a long time and haven’t been in the market for many years,” she says.

A homeowner rentering the market after 20 years will find the pace much faster since the introduction of online listings and social media.

“They want somebody who is able to navigate the waters that are a little more complicated then what they are used to.”

For senior clients, they also want a relatable agent, an advantage Turner has.

“I am in my 60s myself, I have salt and pepper hair.”

Luxury condominium expert Scott Piercy says like other professions you need experts.

“It’s like law, you have someone who deals with divorce or taxes.

People feel more comfortable.”

Although the condominium market is not huge in Victoria, the market is still there.

“With the boomer generation retiring and some making the move to Victoria, we saw the market was under-serviced,” Piercy says.

Something most people don’t think about is the way the weather plays a hand in the market. Victoria’s early spring is helping to boost the spring influx of buyers early.

“It has been fairly steady with the sunshine, we’re having what feels like an early spring so that’s in the market.”

Weather also works to the advantage of Dockside Realty, an agency based on Pender Island as well as Saturna Island. Dockside’s main

AGGV explores power of fashion Fabrics and fashions are all the rage as a new retrospective exhibition is revealed at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.

Merimekko, With Love includes vibrant exhibition looks at the heyday of Marimekko, the Finnish textile and clothing design company that revolutionized the design world with its lively, groundbreaking prints.

The retrospective draws together landmark Marimekko fabrics and fashions created by pioneering designers during the 1960s and 70s.

“This exhibition is exciting for us for a number of reasons,” said Nicole Stanbridge, AGGV’s curator of engagement. “It brings together art and design as it applies to both iconic objects from our daily lives and key moments in art history and popular culture.”

The exhibition, on loan from the Textile Museum of Canada – and that museum’s most popular show to date – gives visitors a sense of the excitement and changes that swept the design communities in Finland, Canada and other countries due to Marimekko’s belief in form and function. The company was revolutionary in changing the way people expressed their personalities and recog-

nized the power of design in everyday life, Stanbridge said.

“The vision behind Marimekko connects to a lineage of art movements that created ideals for living, such as the Arts and Crafts, International Style and Bauhaus movements,” she said.

Lengths of fabric from the time period include the company’s most famous designs, such as Unikko, which today, some fifty years later, is one of the most recognizable patterns in the world. This large poppy pattern was born in 1964 shortly after the Marimekko’s founder, Armi Ratia, who favoured original and utopian designs, had announced the company would never print florals.

Famed designer Maija Isola, who produced many of Marimekko’s most recognized patterns, designed an entire collection of floral patterns in protest—true to the company’s collaborative and pioneering culture.

But the exhibition, like the company, is about more than fabric design. Photographs, letters and more tell the personal stories and relationships at the heart of the company’s international impact, as well Marimekko’s impact on the Canadian design scene.

Marimekko, With Love runs until May 3, and will be the inspiration for the Feb. 27 sold-out edition of Urbanite, the gallery’s always-popular quarterly social event.
