Despite a lack of action over the last year, the dream of a skate park in Central Saanich is still alive, but a final decision on a site has

yet to be made.

The choice is currently between a portion of Stelly’s Secondary School property and two sites in Centennial Park, one west of baseball diamond No. 6, and the other north of White Road trail fronting onto Wallace Drive.

Each site presents its own challenges.

According to District staff, desirable cri-

teria for siting a new skate park include: an area where youth naturally gather, central location within the community, good visibility from a nearby street or public building, safe location, few nearby neighbours, on a bus route, nearby support amenities, minimal size requirements, clear site without trees close by, compatible adjacent uses, and that the skate park doesn’t displace

Movie fundraiser for hoops team

SIDNEY — Nothing like a dancing penguin to immediately bring basketball to mind.

The Parkland Secondary Junior Girls basketball team is hosting Happy Feet Two at the Star Cinema next Sunday (Feb. 28) as a fundraiser for the team.

Despite a recent loss to Oak Bay in the South Islands, the Parkland girls are still gunning for a shot at Provincials and are hoping to raise enough money to offset travel costs for the team.

The movie starts rolling at 3:30 p.m. at the Star Cinema, 9842 Third Street in Sidney, and tickets are $10. Tickets can be purchased from the players by emailing parklandgirlsbball@gmail.com.

H

aving a baby is a life-altering event for any family; having four is nearly unfathomable.

There’s four times the joy and love, but also four times the financial strain of diapers, formula, car seats, cribs and more, as new parents Mark and Alicia Brown of Brentwood Bay have learned since the birth of their quadruplets last October.

But thanks to the efforts of a close friend and neighbour, the Browns now have an extra cushion in the bank for baby costs. Jennifer Olsen decided to run a raffle in support of her friends, and raised $5,000 from the community.

Olsen lived beside the Browns for years, and saw the financial challenges the newly-expanded family was facing.

“I just did it because I knew they were going to need it,” she said.

“Just travelling back and forth to the hospital and parking was costing them

On March 4, Sidney could know whether it’s worth their time to keep pursuing land next to an elementary school for a new fire hall.

Municipal councillors and Town staff went before the board of trustees of School District 63 (Saanich) last week to discuss plans for a community safety building next to Sidney Elementary School. Mayor Steve Price says that in-cam-

Surplus funds low-income assistance

VICTORIA — Expecting budget surpluses for the next three years, the B.C. government is ending the deduction of spousal child support from social assistance payments and providing modest benefits for other low-income earners.

A target of single parents and poverty advocacy organizations in recent years, the “clawback” of child support payments ends Sept.

1. That is expected to leave about $32 million more over the next three years in the pockets of the parents who receive child support along with income assistance and disability payments, a benefit to 3,200 families and 5,400 children.

Community Living B.C., responsible for developmentally disabled adults, gets an additional $106 million over three years, and $20 million is added to the general budget for income assistance.

Caseloads for both are expected to increase and individual payment rates stay the same.

This is also the budget that ends a two-year increase of 2.1 per cent in tax on income more than $150,000 a year.

Finance Minister Mike de Jong said the current fiscal year is expected to finish with a surplus of almost $900 million, due mainly to better than expected personal and corporate income tax revenues, strong retail sales and a one-time adjustment of federal tax payments.

After an additional $3 billion to the ever-growing health care budget and $576 million more for education over the next three years, the surplus for 2015-16 is projected to be $284 million.

B.C. operating debt on the decline VICTORIA — After five years of borrowing to pay for “groceries,” Finance Minister Mike de Jong says budget surpluses this year and in the coming years will largely be used to pay down operating debt.

The provincial budget shows operating debt of $9.4 billion for the year ending in March, declining to $8.4 billion in 2015-16 and falling below $5 billion by 2018.

Total provincial debt, including roads, hospitals and other capital

projects as well as debt held by BC Hydro and other Crown corporations, grows to more than $70 billion by the end of the province’s three-year fiscal plan.

De Jong said balancing the budget means the province is only borrowing to build assets, and the current spending plan calls for

$10.7 billion more in taxpayer-supported debt. One new project is planning funds for the proposed replacement of the George Massey tunnel under the Fraser River, a bottleneck for vehicle and shipping traffic.

VICTORIA — Reducing income taxes for the top two per cent of wage earners cost the B.C. government $230 million that should have gone mainly to middle income earners, NDP leader John Horgan says.

Horgan and NDP finance critic Carole James focused on the measure in Tuesday’s B.C. budget to end the tax increase on income over $150,000 a year. They acknowledged other measures to help low-income people but Horgan said “the middle class was left behind.”

Finance Minister Mike de Jong brought the 2.1 per cent increase on the top tax bracket in 2013, and also increased the corporate tax rate by one per cent in order to present a balanced budget for the 2013 election.

De Jong said Tuesday his commitment was to remove the personal tax increase after two years and this week’s budget follows through.

James said middle-income families are taking the brunt of rate increases for car insurance, ferry fares and BC Hydro, and the services available to them are declining.

Horgan pointed to modest tax breaks for high technology and film production industries, while four times as much government assistance is going to resource roads to develop B.C.’s natural gas export business.

With a surplus nearing $1 billion for the fiscal year ending in March, Horgan said his priorities would have included help for manufacturing in the forest sector.

The site at Stelly’s would not require any tree removal and meets all the criteria associated with siting a skate park.

But though District staff had recommended the Stelly’s location in their most recent report, Coun-

cillor Alicia Cormier offered some concerns about the site after having spoken to several young skateboarders and their families.

Being beside the high school could be intimidating for younger students, she said, and noted there had also been concerns from parents over a less fam-

ily-friendly feel to the area and about existing washrooms and other amenities not being accessible outside of school hours.

The Central Saanich Lions Club, who approached council a year ago with an offer to help fund the skate park, also had qualms over the Stelly’s site

and asked council to reexamine the Centennial Park location.

“Four years ago we lost one of our hardest working members in Mr. Bill Eastgate,” said Ed Wignall, chair of the skate park project and member of the Central Saanich Lions. “Our club has a memorial fund to help fund a last-

Eastgate was heavily involved with Centennial Park when he was alive, and the club has been pursuing an upgrade to the park in Eastgate’s memory, including a skate park, said Wignall.

Having already approached the previous council with the idea and receiving verbal support, Wignall came to council at Monday’s meeting “to request that mayor and council reaffirm their support of the project.”

“Anything we can do to put free recreation in the community is good,” said Coun. Carl Jensen. “I think this might be worthy of putting on a priority list for the strategic planning workshop.”

The District of Central Saanich is currently in talks with the school board regarding the Stelly’s site, and after discussion, council agreed to further examine the Lions’ offer to build a skate park at one of the sites in Centennial Park.

The notoriously shy octopus at the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre came out on Family Day to show off its tentacles, much to the delight of the crowd of children who gathered underneath the tank.

The District of Central Saanich has unanimously approved a proposed resolution for the right to a healthy environment. “It’s good to see how progressive our councils are,� said Alexis White, a Central Saanich resident who gathered a slew of community support for the resolution.

White attended Monday’s meeting and urged council to officially declare support for the resolution, calling up examples of pollution and environmental degradation in her hometown of Hamilton, Ontario as warnings if steps are not taken now to protect the environment on the Peninsula.

More than 20 letters of support were presented, from a handwritten note from a local seven-year-old that simply stated “Find a better way to build houses that won’t hurt the environ-

ment,� to a note from Saanich Mayor Richard Atwell, encouraging the District to follow municipalities like Saanich, Victoria, Vancouver and Montreal in endorsing its own Declaration of the Right to a Healthy Environment.

Eleven-year-old Rafa Snider took the microphone to read out his well-articulated plea to council to ensure that his own children and grandchildren have a healthy and vibrant environment. “It is not too late,â€? he read out to council, “it is time for adults, big company managers and politicians to take our future seriously. “Who cares about wealth and economy if we can’t breathe or feed ourselves in a healthy way ‌ in your hands my future lies.

The declaration, based on David Suzuki’s Blue Dot Tour, included the District’s recognition that a healthy environment is “inextricably linked to the wellbeing of our community.�

Mayor Ryan Windsor called it a “highly

laudable goal,� and fully supported the declaration, but offered “significant caution� in reminding council and the attendees that Central Saanich is a smaller municipality, with limited resources for the “full cost accounting� called for in the document. “I want to recognize the letter writers,� said Coun. Zeb King. “I really want to salute them on that. It’s good to have a vision and something to strive for, and a clean environment is so important.�

“It’s encouraging to see the seats full and people so engaged,� added Coun. Alicia Cormier. “We were absolutely thrilled,� said White of council’s support. “It was heartening, and especially to see a unanimous vote. We’re hoping that the District of North Saanich and the Town of Sidney will feel inspired to follow suit.�

They never got catty

I

t wasn’t the outcome they had hoped for, but as they say, that’s why the game is played.

The Peninsula Panthers’ season ended Monday night at the hands of the Oceanside Generals in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League’s wildcard game to see which team would be the last one into the playoffs. One of these teams was destined to play the spoiler — unfortunately it’s not going to be the Panthers.

Credit must be given, however, to coaches Pete Zubersky and Rob Morin for their efforts to keep the team’s spirits up, even in the face of a rocky season. With only 15 wins, the Panthers might have been excused for being more, well, catty.

And that’s why the team was awarded the Most Disciplined Team honour during the game.

The Panthers didn’t throw hands to try win games — nor did they throw games out of frustration or bad attitudes.

This is a team that stayed focused on improving, showed they could stay positive in the face of defeat and proved they could compete with anyone on the ice.

A young team, keeping up with the league’s best was always going to be a challenge, but the Panthers redeemed themselves. All those close games this season bodes well for the next.

With the potential for a squad chock full of veterans next season, Peninsula could be positioned to exact a little revenge. While many of the players the News Review spoke to are good-natured, we hope this season will help give them that edge needed to string together a bunch of wins.

We plan to be there, to see the players return and hopefully have a better year. Hopefully the fans — and plenty of new ones — will return as well.

A little more noise and plenty of voices of support from the stands will go a long way for this squad next season.

Wolves are not the problem, we are

This response to “Wolf kill the last hope for caribou” in the Peninsula News Review, Jan. 28, provides transparency regarding the controversial issue of killing wolves to save caribou.

The article mentions 18 remaining animals of the South Selkirk mountain caribou herd. The article fails to mention that according to Environment Canada’s Recovery Strategy (2014), the population of the Woodland Caribou, Southern Mountain population across B.C. and Alberta is approximately 6,000.

The 18 caribou mentioned are not genetically distinct; they are geographically distinct. Isolated pockets of caribou are the result of habitat loss and degradation due to industrial interference.

The approximation of B.C.’s grey wolf population being 8,500 individuals requires scrutiny. According to B.C.’s Wolf Management Plan (WMP) “direct census is infeasible.”

Therefore the actual wolf population is unknown. Moreover, the wolf population of the South Selkirk mountains and the Peace District are also unknown. Factual scientific data should underpin an effective caribou protection strategy.

The cause of reported increased predation to caribou is cited in the Recovery Strategy as “resulting from habitat alteration due to industrial activities.” These activities “such as forest harvesting, mining and mineral exploration and development, and oil and gas exploration and development remove or destroy southern mountain caribou habitat (mature and old forests) and create early seral habitats favoured

by other prey species such as moose and deer.”

As deer and moose reportedly sustain wolf populations, the resulting increase in their populations may increase wolf populations, which may subsequently prey on caribou. In response, “wildlife managers have increased the hunting allocation of deer, moose, and elk in, and adjacent to, caribou habitat to reduce the alternate prey.” The rationale is that a reduction of these primary food sources for wolves will naturally limit the wolf population. However, the contrary is also true: a decrease in a wolf’s natural

prey forces wolves to hunt alternate species such as caribou, justifying a wolf kill while satisfying BC’s hunting lobby.

The WMP’s goal to “ensure a selfsustaining population” is echoed in the article, that managed hunting and trapping preserves the wolf as apex predator. These claims are premised on the argument that killing wolves preserves them, rather than conserving wildlife and its habitat for a balanced ecosystem to preserve wolves.

The inevitable effects of the approved Northern Gateway Pipeline that will run through the heart of Mountain Caribou habitat, the natural gas industry in the Peace District, the potential expansion of the Trans Mountain Pipeline, and the Site-C project is that they negatively impact caribou habitat.

In other words, the worst is yet to come for caribou. When Europeans arrived, humans, wolves and caribou co-existed in plentiful numbers.

Caribou populations have suffered since then. One incontrovertible conclusion is that killing wolves will not change the future for caribou.

Caribou populations naturally fluctuate, yet without sufficient habitat preserved or restored, they will continue to decline.

Action that is arguably as opposite to the core values of many British Columbians as shooting wolves from helicopters is not the answer to caribou preservation. Habitat protection and restoration is the last hope. Wolves are not the problem, we are.

Bullying and Cyberbullying Bullying Bullying happens when there is an imbalance of power; where someone purposely and repeatedly says or does hurtful things to someone else.

Bullying can occur one on one or in a group(s) of people. There are many different forms of bullying: ◼ Physical bullying (using your body or objects to cause harm): includes hitting, punching, kicking, spitting or breaking someone else’s belongings. ◼ Verbal bullying (using words to hurt someone): includes name calling, put-downs, threats and teasing. ◼ Social bullying (using your friends and relationships to hurt someone): includes spreading rumours, gossiping, excluding others from a group or making others look foolish or unintelligent. This form of bullying is most common among girls (Canadian Children’s Rights Council).

Cyberbullying Cyberbullying involves the use of communication technologies such as the Internet, social networking sites, websites, email, text messaging and instant messaging to repeatedly intimidate or harass others.

Cyberbullying includes: • Sending mean or threatening emails or text/instant messages.

• Posting embarrassing photos of someone online.

• Creating a website to make fun of others.

• Pretending to be someone by using their name.

• Tricking someone into revealing personal or embarrassing information and sending it to others.

Cyberbullying affects victims in different ways than traditional bullying. It can follow a victim everywhere 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from school, to the mall and all the way into the comfort of their home - usually safe from traditional forms of bullying.

Impacts

Over time, youth who are bullied or bully others find their own ways of dealing with it. While some victims/bullies may become depressed and begin to withdraw socially, others react aggressively and turn to violence.

Dangers for Children and Adolescents Who Are Bullied: • Depression • Social anxiety, loneliness, isolation • Stress related health problems (e.g., headaches, stomach aches) • Low self esteem • School absenteeism and academic problems • Aggressive behaviours • Contemplating, attempting, or committing suicide Dangers for Children and Adolescents Who Bully Others: • Not knowing the difference between right and wrong • Delinquency and substance use • Academic problems and increased school dropout rate • Aggression • Sexual harassment and dating aggression • Gang involvement and criminal adulthood • Difficulties in their relationships with others • Being bullied at the hands of others

• Council has approved an extension of the Sewer Collection Area No. 1 to allow the property at 6244 Rodolph Road to connect to the sanitary collection system.

Aplomado Developments recently received approval for a six-lot subdivision that would include the removal of ten protected trees. Owner Dan Doore agreed to donate five per cent of the property as park land.

• Council declined an invitation from the BC Seniors Games Society to host the 30th, 31st and 32nd consecutive annual 55+ BC Games, to be held in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Councillor Carl Jensen noted he felt the District simply does not have the facilities.

• Councillor Alicia Cormier has been appointed liaison to the Saanich Inlet Protection Society. The Society is involved with environmental protection, habitatconservation and wildlife protection.

• In response to a request for funding for Christmas lights in Brentwood Village, council will be sending out letters of inquiry to local service groups to see if any are interested in sponsoring a holiday light-up.

Sidney Mayor Steve Price is losing his top project this year, as council sets its priorities and budget for 2015.

A proposed pedestrian overpass of the Pat Bay Highway near Beacon Avenue has been cancelled for this year and pushed to 2016 at the earliest. At this point, Price said, it’s too expensive.

“This council is not impressed

about having to pay 50 to 60 per cent of it,” he said.

The Town would have been able to pay for it with gas tax money — and not add to people’s tax burden — if not for preliminary engineering work that revealed ground conditions that forced up the overall price tag. The province had agreed to pay a portion of the overpass costs, but Price said the federal government has not yet responded to the Town’s request for infrastructure funds.

“Because we have so many other

pieces of infrastructure in need, we really can’t justify paying for something that’s really provincial transportation infrastructure.”

Price added he still would like to see the pedestrian overpass built, but admitted it’ll just take longer.

Council, in the meantime, is setting its priorities for 2015 and fitting them into the budget. Price said Beacon Wharf and Bevan Pier will be studied this year to see what can be done to improve them. Price said Sidney is asking the Capital Regional District

to throw in some support in regards to studying whether a proposed Gulf Island passenger ferry service could be added at Beacon Wharf.

New wayfinding signage is in the work for the Anacortes Ferry terminal area, Price added. Those plans could use up council’s entire $15,000 for new signs.

The view from Poplar Grove over Okanagan Lake is spectacular as is the Syrah, which, like the best of the winery’s reds, benefits from the extra aging afforded by cellaring it for a couple of years longer than the norm. A three-kilometre side trip to Red Rooster netted a Reserve Syrah, which exuded yummy plum and cherry from its neck, once opened! One more stop before a relaxing evening spent staring over the lake while sipping on a suite balcony at the Summerland Waterfront Resort. The snowy and very icy single track to the new Sage Hills Vineyard in Summerland required careful navigation. The reward was a barrel tasting with winemaker Andrea Lee and vineyard manager Keenan Thrussell. The new vintage had yet to be bottled but a rosé version hit the spot later!

Mercedes gets a grip with winterland

Montreal – If there is one part of this vast country that knows about winter and winter driving, it is the province of Quebec.

Winter weather can stretch from November until April, which is why this frost bitten part of the country mandates winter tires on all vehicles and was the perfect spot to showcase two products from Mercedes Benz, the B-Class and CLA-Class.

Both are now equipped with Mercedes 4Matic all wheel drive (AWD) system. Touching down in Montreal, the outside temperature was heading to minus twenty three overnight and minus nineteen for a daytime high, plus snow, lots of snow.

Looks

Both the B-Class hatchback and CLA sedan are based on the Mercedes small car platform that is also shared with the GLA compact crossover. The B and GLA are sold with front wheel drive (FWD) and now AWD. The latest B-Class was introduced a few years ago and gets a mild facelift, including a new grille, lower chin spoiler, different

wheels and a new accent line down the side. The CLA was just introduced last year so external updates will have to wait another couple of years. The B-Class is a taller hatchback design that provides a useful package for young families, including bigger rear windows and a large hatch and cargo space.

Inside

Both the B-Class and CLA receive nice updates for 2015 on the inside. Both share the same dash so updating both made sense. The screen that sits front and centre on the dash, like and iPad is larger, moving to a standard 7-inch screen or optional 8-inch screen on cars equipped with navigation.

This screen is controlled with a small knob between the front seats. Other updates include a sportier and very comfortable steering wheel, a revised stereo head unit and a new instrument cluster behind the steering wheel. Heated seats are now standard equipment for 2015 but heated rear seats and a heated steering

wheel are not available in these cars. The B-Class 4Matic is a $2,200 premium over the FWD version, starting at $33,500. The CLA has the same $2,200 charge for AWD, starting at $36,800. One nice feature available on the CLA is an “exclusive” package that includes a leather dashboard with French stitching for $2,300.

To explore the abilities of these two new products, the Olympic rowing basin used for the 1976 Montreal games was partially plowed, exposing sheet ice with a fresh sprinkling of snow. This provided a great example of the limits of grip and the abilities of the electronic stability program, in conjunction with the AWD system. On sheet ice, there is no grip, so sliding is easy. It was on the rural roads outside of Montreal near the ski resort of Bromont that the 4Matic system proved useful. The system is designed to provide power to the front wheels as often as possible and instantly transfer power to the rear wheels when extra grip is needed, it all happens in a nanosecond. The maximum amount of power sent to the rear wheels if fifty percent. I noticed that these cars, when placed in “sport” mode actually allow the car to slip and slide without the electronics being too oppressive.

Mercedes has had enormous success with its 4Matic AWD system, accounting for eighty five percent of its sales. With the introduction of these two new models in late 2014, the number has jumped to over ninety percent. This opens up the safety and stability of AWD to a larger market.

One thing to keep in mind is these two products offer great value if the buyer keeps and eye on the options. The “must have” package include the Premium Package for an additional $3800 on both the B-Class and CLA. This includes automatic climate control, a huge panoramic sunroof, rear view camera, blind spot system and navigation. This brings the 4Matic price on the B-Class to $37,300 and $40,600 on the CLA. Not overly expensive for a Mercedes Benz product but pricier than the starting price suggests. Should you consider the 4Matic version of the B-Class and CLA? Music has helped Jennifer Viinikka’s children develop great study habits at home.

For that, and for many other reasons, her three kids take lessons at Brentwood School of Music.

“Our home is like a family recital,” she says.

“Even the international student we’re hosting plays the drums.”

Mom waits in the small lobby of the Brentwood School of Music in Brentwood Bay, which has been in operation for more than 40 years. Much of the building is portioned off into smaller studios for piano, guitar, voice and more. Faint sounds of those instruments and the instructors filter throughout the place. Viinikka enjoys a paperback novel while her kids scurry to and from their lessons.

“The school has been so wonderful,” she says, adding she enjoys sitting there.

Her son Levi started in the school’s Orff Program, which is designed to introduce musical instruments to young children. At 10, five years after starting on the piano, Levi is now learning to play the electric guitar with instructor Mike Preston.

Coral Reefs in Hawaii and across the globe continue to decline in health due to intensifying climate change, resource extraction, and pollution.

Although the future looks bleak, some corals and reefs are not only surviving but also thriving in conditions that kill others. Dr. Gates, a world renowned coral expert, unveils the complex biology that underpins this natural variation in response. She then discusses how this knowledge can be harnessed to develop tools that build resilience on reefs and arrest and improve the prognosis for coral reefs.

Brentwood School of Music owner Carrie Dujela started teaching music with her parents, who worked for Lann Copeland’s school on Oldfield Road. She took her own lessons as well, becoming an accomplished musician.

Copeland would eventually open a downtown Victoria music school and sold the Central Saanich school to Dujela’s family, who moved it to Brentwood Bay. “We started in two small houses (next to their current location),” she says. “We would eventually have to build a new building.

That was taking a big risk.”

That was in around 1988, she says. Since then, they’ve grown considerably to today’s estimated 400-plus students and 14 instructors.

Dujela has also seen a lot of change over those years. At one

time, they leased out space in the music school building — but that’s almost unnecessary now. The school has expanded within its walls a few times — and Dujela says there are plans to make further changes in the near future.

One of the biggest impacts came when they introduced their Rock Band programs, she says. More space for larger groups was needed, so more walls came down.

What has kept them going all these years, Dujela continues, are the people.

“That has been our emphasis over the years. The kids are coming here to have fun and if they’re not, we lose them.”

Yet, she says they are more successful than not in introducing music in a positive way into people’s lives.

“We have had some students that have become teachers here,” she says, adding other students have grown up and are now bringing their kids to the school.

“We always try to instill a love of music in their lives. When we see it come through when new generations come here, well that’s why we keep going.”

Niah Davis and Zoé Johnston are two young students at Brentwood School of Music. They both love singing and wanted to improve their voices and their confidence.

“I started singing in Grade 4 in talent shows,” Davis says. “I wanted to learn how to master my voice.”

Johnston started in piano lessons and soon found she enjoyed singing along. So, after eight years on the ivories, she is taking a break and using her voice. Both girls say they have learned new things about themselves and how to reach the highs and lows of singing the type of music they like (folk/pop for Davis and musicals for Johnston). They say they’re not sure if they’ll turn singing into careers, but expect music to be in their lives for a long time.

Rebecca Battilana, a Grade 12 student at Stelly’s Secondary School, has been at the music school for 14 years. Recently, Battilana appeared in Stelly’s presentation of Band Geeks, a musical.

“I don’t ever want to lose what I’ve gotten from music,” she says, adding it’s always helped relieve the day’s stresses. “It’s been a good part of my life.”

Up-and-coming singer Lara Beattie, 8, is learning God Help the Outcasts for the upcoming Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival in April. She says she’s working through her nervousness to be able to perform in front of a lot of people. Her instructor, Olivia

Selig, is a soprano and has been on stage many times. She is sure to be able to help Beattie overcome any stage fright she might have.

Beattie, too, worked her way into voice lessons after learning on the piano for a few years. That represents how being exposed to many instruments and music styles can encourage people to take on new challenges.

Dujela notes the school isn’t

just for children. There are many adults that come to hone their skills — or even learn an instrument for the first time.

And when they do gain new and better skills, the students are invited to put them to the test.

Each year, Dujela says the Brentwood School of Music holds a series of concerts. A dozen of those are for the different Rock Band program classes and they start in June.

“The students and instructors have a blast at these concerts,” Dujela says. “The kids are always planning big things for their friends and the teachers encourage that.”

Again, it’s all about having fun and that means it’s all about the music.

There are two migrant workers buried in a collapsed well in North Saanich’s Ardmore subdivision.

That’s one piece of interesting history, told by Wallace du Temple, one of three storytellers invited to talk about North Saanich this week.

On Tuesday, the District launched its official Jubilee events, marking the municipality’s 50th anniversary, with the first of two storytelling sessions.

Du Temple, the author of a book on the history of the Ardmore Golf Course, joined Pat Johnston and Gordon Hartshorne in the North Saanich municipal hall. They talked about the early settlers of the District, their neighbours and their interesting experiences — including an armed robbery, TV stars and the aforementioned well accident that sealed two workers to their doom.

Mayor Alice Finall says the storytelling event drew a good crowd. They were invited by the District’s Heritage and Jubilee committees to open a year of events that mark the anniversary of the incorporation of the municipality.

To mark the occasion, Finall said there will be a variety of activities and events. Storytelling continues May 6 at the Ardmore Golf Course, where du Temple will regale the audience with tales of the family mule that lived along the links, and more.

Good hearing, poor comprehension?

The number of people who can hear well, but can’t understand what’s being said, is increasing. This is most evident in conversations and watching television. A newlydeveloped hearing chip is designed to restore speech comprehension without being noticeable in the ear.

B.C. lost 7-0 to Quebec and 7-1 to Ontario. They beat Prince Edward Island, 5-1, and played Saskatchewan on Feb. 18, after the PNR’s deadline.

In three games, team captain Hart scored one goal and racked up 12 penalty minutes.

Peninsula peppered the Parksville goalie with shot after shot Monday night but could only muster two goals and missed a chance to extend their hockey season as they fell, 5-2.

The Oceanside Generals came to the Panorama Recreation Centre Monday night (Feb. 16), to face the Peninsula Panthers in a Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) wildcard game.

A win in the suddendeath match would propel one of the teams into the first round of the playoffs. A loss would end their season.

Peninsula (15-30) outshot Oceanside 58-23 on the night, yet Gens’ goalie David Anderson was there to block them. It didn’t help that Peninsula would hit on his chest pad, glove or miss the net entirely. On a few occasions, Peninsula missed empty-net chances — and that seemed to be the way things were going for the squad that night.

Oceanside’s Travis Flug and Keagan Fedorko opened the scoring. Peninsula’s Sean Buchanan added one with six seconds left in the first period, assisted by Kai Turner and Braeden Pearce.

In the second period, Logan Savard would score what would turn out to be the winner for the Gens, who came into the game with a record of 7-36-2.

Chase Gaudreault added the Gens’ fourth tally and Peninsula’s Spencer Loverock scored his team’s final goal of the season, unassisted.

Flug added the empty-netter late in the third period to seal the victory.

Oceanside advanced to play the Campbell River Storm on Feb. 18.

Boulders hosts world sport Extreme need for a climbing camp this weekend new clubhouse roof CENTRAL SAANICH — Some of the world’s top competition climbers are in Central Saanich this weekend for a sport climbing camp.

The Boulders Climbing Gym is hosting the camp, put on by the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) and welcomes close to 100 athletes, age 13 and up. Competing in both lead (difficulty) and speed, these athletes are on the Saanich Peninsula to hone their skills and learn more about the sport.

“Our reputation as a world class climbing facility continues to grow and we are very excited to be hosting this high profile event,” said Boulders Chair Kimanda Jarzebiak. “This camp is bringing the top climbers in the world to our facility and will set the stage for us to host additional international events in the future.”

Classroom sessions will be paired with workshops starting today (Friday, Feb. 19) and running through Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 20 and 21 at Boulders gym, located at Stelly’s Secondary School.

There will also be a pair of mock climbing competitions. The first goes Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. and the second, Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Public admission to the mock competitions is by donation.

According to Boulders, this is the first time the IFSC has held an official training camp — with Boulders its first host venue.

There’s no place like home, which is why Abstract Developments has designed its new 14-unit condo in Cadboro Bay, Element Beach Residences, with expansive living areas.

“The size and number of units is driven by the location,” said Abstract’s development and acquisitions manager, Sam Ganong.

“We see a demand from downsizers, and the community plans drive it too, across the street is a three-storey building, this fits in with the community.”

There are three layouts available: a one bed, one bath, and den; a two bed, two bath; and a two bed, two bath with den. They range in square footage from 737 to 1,009, with seven units on the second floor and seven on the third floor.

The ground floor will be commercial space, either for office or retail, which will be subject to zoning.

The floor designs are based on creating a home feel rather than a condo with an open kitchen and living area that is flowing and expansive.

Because condo living areas often feel small with limited storage, Abstract tried to make it more functional by adding storage with custom millwork throughout.

Element Beachside Residences adds ground level commercial space and 14 condos on Penrhyn Street in Cadboro Bay. It’s a much different project than Abstract’s recently completed City Park townhomes overlooking Rudd Park on Whittier Avenue, just south of Boleskine Road.

“City Park townhouses are geared to entry level buyers

and young families, driven by its proximity to Uptown, which has been successful,” Ganong said.

Lures, baits and scents won’t be needed to hook hundreds of outdoor enthusiasts expected at Pearkes Recreation Centre this weekend for the annual Victoria Boat and Fishing Show.

The Feb. 20 to 22 event includes exhibitors like Ducks Unlimited, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, local hunting and fishing shops and the South Vancouver Island Anglers Coalition.

“Per capita, Victoria has more independent anglers than all of B.C. It’s amazing,” said Darren Wright, co-owner at Island Outfitters and longtime sponsor of the boat and fishing show. “Just drive around our roads, there’s a boat in every driveway. Fishing is very good here and it’s protected. We’re lucky to live here and be able to fish so locally.”

The fishing season is ramping up strong this year after the Fisheries and Oceans Canada opened up halibut fishing for Feb. 1, several weeks earlier than normal. Strict fishing licences allow anglers a set number of catches per season to help manage the population.

Bond will be presenting a talk on halibut fishing each day during the event. He said the company’s six charter boats have already been out on 15 trips since the halibut season kicked off in waters around Race Rocks ecological reserve, Constance Bank and elsewhere in and around the Juan de Fuca strait.

“We get a lot of locals who just want to learn about what we do, lots of people from Vancouver, Calgary, and with the Canadian dollar dropping like it has, we get a lot of people from the States as well,” Bond said.

While charters range between $500 and $800 for a daily trip, those with more

boating experience (and a boating licence) can rent fishing boats and make their own way. Though be warned, says Bond, only boaters with proper training in ocean tides and currents should venture into the strait.

The Victoria Boat and Fishing Show opens at 1 p.m. today (Feb. 20) at Pearkes Rec Centre.

Weekend tickets to the show are $9 for men, $7 seniors and kids and teens under 18 and women are free.

Bring a food donation to The Mustard Seed food bank and receive $2 off an admission.
