Peter Langeman gave his bride-to-be a chance to back out of their impending wedding nuptials. It was two weeks before they were set to be married, and Peter was involved in an accident while riding his motorcycle. One of his legs was amputated below the knee and he was missing his front teeth. He spent his last few days of bachelorhood recuperating in hospital. “I wanted to give (Ramona) a chance to back out,” he recalled on Friday afternoon. But he is glad she didn’t call it off. Peter and Ramona will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this July. But on Friday, they were among the six couples who renewed their wedding vows in front of family, friends and fellow residents at the Chartwell Langley Gardens retirement community. The ceremony — done for all six simultaneously — was conducted by another resident, Rev. Greta Sheppard. The six couples have a combined 314 years of marriage among them, with John and Felicita Rampone in their 67th year of marriage while Denis and Mary Hughes are ‘the newlyweds’ at five years. For the Langemans, sharing the day was nothing new, as they were also part of a joint ceremony on their original wedding day, July 30, 1955, as Peter’s brother was also marrying Ramona’s sister. “I was in shock,” Ramona recalled of her fiance’s accident. On March 7, 2011, Kwantlen First Nation elder George Antone was found shot to death in his McMillan Island home. Now his accused killer, Michele Marie Serdar, 43, has pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. She was in Surrey Provincial Court on Thursday, Feb. 12. She is scheduled for a sentencing hearing on April 2. In November, 2013, the Integrated Homicide GEOR GE investigaANTONE tion Team announced Serdar had been charged with second-degree murder. She was arrested in Quebec City after an extensive investigation. She was transported to B.C. shortly afterwards to face the charges. In February 2014, she was released on $50,000 bail. Antone’s body was discovered in his home on March 7, 2011. He was 71. An extensive police investigation took place after Antone’s death, and there was a lot of concern among the Kwantlen First Nation people about the fact that a suspect had not been apprehended. “We await the judicial process to begin, as we continue to remember and mourn the loss of our dear elder,” said Kwantlen councillor Tumia Knott in a press conference after Serdar’s arrest in 2013.
