uilding more houses and improving the village’s landfill are high on the agenda for Carmacks’s new mayor, Lee Bodie.

Bodie was elected in a byelection on Feb. 5, after beating out Robert Mayer.

The 61-year-old had held the position of acting mayor since the death of Elaine Wyatt, who passed away from cancer in late November.

Wyatt had been mayor of Carmacks for nine years.

After serving as deputy mayor for six years and councillor for three years, Bodie said it was just a natural progression to run for mayor.

“I really enjoy it,” he said, “and I enjoy trying to better the community in any way we can.”

“We have a lot of things on our plate and things we want to do.”

One of the goals is to spend the remainder of the Building Canada fund on upgrading the landfill.

Bodie said the village needs to do a better job of recycling, and getting rid of old vehicles.

A better facility would make it easier for them to achieve that, he added.

“Our main focus is on recycling and sending fewer things to the landfill,” he said.

Thinking long-term, it’s important for council to prepare for a potential influx in population, Bodie said, referring to the

Casino Mining Corp. has submitted a proposal to assessors for the $2.5-billion mine, the biggest project ever considered by the Yukon Environmental and Socioeconomic Assessment Board.

The mine, located 150 kilometres northwest of Carmacks, would employ an estimated 1,000 people during construction and 600 during production if it is built.

Bodie said the village could be “caught with its pants down” if it doesn’t start preparing for that now.

“No one will say it out loud but we know it’s coming and they know it’s coming,” Bodie said.

“We need to upgrade our infrastructure and prepare ourselves for them. Even if 10 per cent of the number of people they’re projecting use Carmacks, we’ll be overwhelmed.

“The nursing station and the fire department aren’t equipped to deal with that.”

More people means more housing, and that’s something they’re not ready for either, Bodie said.

“We’ll need help from the territorial government with land; we’re only a small community and we were never set up for that growth,” he said.

“Our mandate isn’t housing but it’s to take care of our people and make sure their needs are met.”

Bodie painted a grim picture of the housing situation in Carmacks.

When asked to elaborate, he

said “there is none.”

In 2009, $1 million in upgrades were made to the Tatchun Centre General Store, in preparation for nearby mining development.

But there was nowhere to house the staff needed to run the store, Bodie said.

“It strangled us for a long time,” he said.

“When I moved here 10 years ago there were a lot of country residential lots. Now there are very few places to live.”

A housing complex with six units is scheduled for construction in April, and that should help alleviate the crunch, Bodie said.

Fixing the town’s only skating rink is on the agenda, too.

It was closed down in December after a routine inspection of the village’s facilities by its insurance company revealed that supports holding the roof above the outdoor rink were unstable.

Bodie’s term ends in October, after which a municipal election will be held.

Working with the three other councillors has been a smooth process, he said.

“We don’t really have debates, we have discussions,” he said.

“We talk things out reasonably amongst ourselves.”

Because there are fewer than six months to the election, the Municipal Act doesn’t require council to elect a fourth councillor in the interim, Bodie explained.

Yukoners ponder assisted-suicide ruling Ashley Joannou News Reporter

A

dvocates and medical professionals in the territory are digesting a Supreme Court of Canada decision that legalizes doctor-assisted suicide.

The country’s top court made its landmark ruling Friday. In a unanimous decision the justices said consenting adults suffering from a “grievous and irredeemable medical condition” and “enduring suffering that is intolerable” can ask a medical doctor for help dying.

The court gave governments 12 months to create any required regulations before this decision comes into full effect.

Dr. Rao Tadepalli is a Whitehorse doctor and board member for the Canadian Medical Association.

He said the association’s experts are in the process of putting together recommendations for the federal government on what the new regulations might look like.

“I felt that the societal maturity would take a long time to happen, so I was pleasantly surprised that that’s an option available to a rare group of patients,” he said Tuesday.

Discussions around assisted suicide are part of a bigger equation when it comes to dying, Tadepalli said.

He said palliative care is still his primary focus. But in rare cases, where an informed patient has

he City of Whitehorse is taking steps to plug gaps in its ATV and snowmobile bylaws that were created by recent changes to the territory’s Motor Vehicles Act. The recommendations, made by bylaw chief Dave Pruden last week, would require users to carry a valid driver’s licence and registration, wear a helmet and meet required equipment regulations when riding within city limits.

The city introduced these requirements in 2012. But these bylaws referred to sections of Yukon’s Motor Vehicles Act that

The new system, called Aspen, is the same used by the B.C. Department of Education, Minister Doug Graham announced today.

The student information system is what educators use to track, among other things, students’ contact information, grades and attendance.

The system currently used in

Those changes are likely to become law next month, so Pruden said it was good timing for the city to amend its bylaws.

The bylaw received first and second reading at Monday’s council meeting.

The city currently only has two part-time bylaw officers available to enforce the ATV and snowmobile rules, Pruden said.

“Based on their observations, we’re getting good compliance when it comes to snowmobile users wearing helmets,” he said.

“But with ATV and motorcycles there is less compliance.

As far as registration and driver’s licences, the officers are telling me that the majority of users

have those.

“We’re still running into people who don’t, though.”

The penalty for operating an ATV or snowmobile without a certificate is $300, while the fine for riding without insurance is $500.

Based on statistics from the past four years, 39 users were ticketed for not having insurance, while only four were ticketed for not having a helmet.

Eleven people were fined for operating in prohibited areas.

Councillor Mike Gladish raised the question about what would happen on the Alaska Highway, where the city can’t enforce those bylaws.

Pruden said it would be hard

to stop users staying along the highway, but most just cross from one side to the other – meaning they could be stopped either before or after.

Dorothy Lebel, a Riverdale resident and member of Active Trails Whitehorse Association, spoke at last week’s standing committee meeting.

She said if the city is going to amend its bylaws, it should also consider increasing its list of prohibited areas.

Snowmobile users are banned from roadways such as Mountainview Road and Lewes Boulevard, and also from campgrounds, playgrounds and the downtown area.

“We want to remind council

that there’s still a gap that needs to be addressed,” she said.

“There is ongoing evidence of snowmobile damage to non-motorized trails and green spaces.

There is a need to designate clear, well-signed motorized trails.

Lebel said she had previously been told by Mayor Dan Curtis that changes couldn’t be made because the bylaws were too recent.

“Now that changes are being brought to the ATV and snowmobile bylaws, we would like to remind council that it needs to protect our trails and green spaces,” she added.

The fine for damaging vegetation is $300.

Yukon schools is being discontinued by its provider Pearson Canada in 2016. It has been used in the Yukon since 2010.

Training on the new system is expected to start in the spring.

At 6:19 p.m., Whitehorse RCMP responded to a 911 call of a man who had been severely beaten and stabbed at The Barracks, an apartment complex on Range Road.

The 29-year-old victim was brought to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to a RCMP news release this morning.

Police are still searching for two male suspects involved in the attack.

The weapon, believed to be “sharpedged, such as a knife,” has yet to be recovered, said Cpl. Natasha Dunmall.

The second incident occurred ap-

proximately 10 minutes later.

Police responded to a 911 call of multiple stabbings inside a residence on Prospector Road.

Five victims were located with various degrees of stabbing and slashing injuries. Three of them were brought to the Whitehorse General Hospital.

Following an argument that led to a physical fight, the accused left the residence and returned with what police believe was a hunting knife.

Alcohol was a factor, Dunmall said.

Roxanne McGinty, 32, has been charged with five counts of aggravated assault and one count of failing to comply with a court order.

McGinty remains in custody and will re-appear in territorial court later this week.

Despite the time and proximity of the incidents, the RCMP says they were not related.

Yukon Hospital Corporation spokesperson James Low said he could not comment on the condition of the victims.

He said that he has since realized that he “clearly put others at risk.�

He said that he had “completely blinded� himself to what he was doing.

Mackie told the court he believes he “can come back from the pit that I dug with my own two hands.�

Cozens said he needs time before he can make a decision.

For now, Mackie remains out on bail. He will be turning himself in at the end of the month to start serving his sentence, however long that ends up being.

Officers, including a police service dog, came to the airport and spotted the suspect.

Officers were in hard body armour and carried rifles.

The suspect in this case followed all of the officers’ instructions, police say.

He was instructed to lie on the ground. He was arrested without a problem.

Dunmall said that when the officers searched the man they did not find a gun in his waistband, but did find a knife in his pocket.

Eleven grams of crack cocaine was

also located on him, she said.

She didn’t have any information on what type of knife it was.

After the man was taken into custody, officers and the dog searched the area but did not find any gun.

The whole incident took about an hour, Dunmall said. It doesn’t appear any flights were affected, she said. “Having a tactical response in a public setting such as the airport is always dynamic. The responding officers were able to quickly and effectively assess the situation, locate and arrest the male while maintaining public safety.�

Gerrit Houben-Szabo, 27, was scheduled to appear in territorial court yesterday on a charge of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

It’s no wonder they were a major hit.

About 940 calendars have sold so far, said O’Carroll.

There are still a few available at the Feed Store, he said.

They had been selling for $20 each, but now they are available by donation.

“If you feel you want to give more, or even less – that’s fine, too,” he said.

“We’ve met our goal. We were quite happy with that.”

irefighters plus puppies turned out to be a winning combination for the Whitehorse Firefighter Association’s charity calendar fundraiser.

The project saw firefighters pose with shelter dogs and cats to raise money for the Mae Bachur Animal Shelter in Whitehorse.

Shelter manager Betty Irwin was overcome with emotion on Monday as she accepted a cheque for more than $21,000.

“We are so grateful for this help,” she said.

“I can’t believe it. These guys have just been unbelievable.”

The size of the cheque came as a total surprise, said Irwin.

“I heard a rumour that we might get $2,000.”

“I kept lying to her for a while,” said Nicholas O’Carroll, one of the firefighters who led the project, with a laugh.

The money has come in at a crucial time, said Irwin.

“This being the wintertime, our expenses go up for taking care of the animals,” said Irwin.

“The heating bill just goes sky high.”

The money will help keep the lights on and the doors open and the animals warm and fed, she said.

Humane Society Yukon was presented a cheque for over $21,000 from the Whitehorse Firefighters Association on Monday.

“Being a non-profit organization, we depend on people like this … to keep the shelter open and to make sure that the animals are well cared for.”

It’s been about 10 years since the last time the firefighters put out a calendar, said O’Carroll.

They were looking for a local charity that they hadn’t

sponsored in the past, he said.

“My wife actually was the one that influenced me to look at Mae Bachur. Her mother was a part of the board here in the late ‘90s, and she knows that at this time they’ve been going through a lot of changes and they could use a little extra help, a little extra cash for the animals.”

The association teamed up with GBP Creative to take the photographs and produce the 2015 calendar.

Some firefighters posed with dogs and cats that were up for adoption at the shelter, and others brought in their own pets that they had previously adopted, said O’Carroll.

As for the dog that rode the final leg in the sled, Sass hasn’t decided if he’ll leave Dawson this afternoon with or without him. “He’s a younger dog who just wasn’t keeping up with the speed we were coming down off the Dome with,� said Sass. “I haven’t made the call yet, but I think I’m going to leave here with 13.�

Phillips takes back Quest 300 title to win the Yukon Quest 1,000, which she did in 2000. The 44-year-old also placed second in the 2012 Iditarod.

Phillips has raced the 1,000mile Quest six times, with five top-10 results. She placed fourth in 2008 and fifth in 2009.

Additionally, she took 16th in the 2012 Iditarod and plans to race it again next month.

At press time Friday morning Phillip’s husband, Ed Hopkins, was in seventh place in the 1,000-mile Quest to Fairbanks.

Zirkle’s husband, Allan Moore, who is attempting to win his third straight Quest 1,000 title, was at the Dawson City checkpoint in second place.

nlike when she won two years ago, Tagish’s Michelle Phillips wasn’t backlit by the headlamp of Fairbanks, Alaska’s Aliy Zirkle late Monday night.

There was a lot more breathing room this time around.

Phillips claimed her second Yukon Quest 300 title with a two-hour victory over Zirkle Monday evening in Pelly Crossing. She beat rival Zirkle by just eight seconds in 2013, the last time Phillips entered the race.

“I’m really happy with my team and I’m really happy with the training I did and some of the dogs I had on my team,” said Phillips. “I had some younger dogs – some Iditarod prospects – and they really impressed me. Yah, it feels good.”

Phillips completed the 300-mile (483-kilometre) sled dog race from Whitehorse with a time of 56 hours and 16 minutes. Zirkle, who was the defending champ, came in at 58:18.

Dissimilar to the back-andforth battle two years ago, Phillips owned it this year. The 46-year-old was fastest overall on all four legs of the race.

She had a 42-minute lead over Zirkle by the end of the first leg at Braeburn following a chilly Saturday start with temperatures below minus-30.

“The hardest was coming into it knowing it was going to be cold because our winter was so warm that it was really hard on the mind to know if we’d be OK in the cold,” said Phillips, who reached the finish at 11:25 p.m. “But I’ve run a few Quests and Iditarods in some pretty cold weather – I think the coldest I’ve been in is 60-below running dogs – so we were fine.

Got a Whitehorse squatter story?

am compiling stories and pictures from pioneers who once lived in one of the old squatter areas in the lower town of Whitehorse. I hope to publish them into a proposed book called The Squatter Days of Whitehorse.

In contrast to our present bustling and thriving capital, Whitehorse in the ‘50s and ‘60s was an ugly duckling, honey bucket town, with ramshackle buildings left over from the two mad “rushes” of 1898 and World War Two. The young population, from all over, came seeking the high wages in the Yukon, almost double of elsewhere. But, same old story, plenty of jobs, but no place to rent.

Affordable housing came by building a little cabin on a piece of empty White Pass or Crown land downtown, known as squatting.

This incredible building boom flourished in the ’40s, peaked in the early ‘60s to the final clearance in the late ’90s by the city in Moccasin Flats (Shipyard Park).

It has left us with an amusing

picture of a survivor town of muddy streets, crude shacks and outhouses that huddled below the escarpment and airport. Sitting above, in its own modern world, was the Canadian military, the main payroll.

A report on the squatters of Whitehorse for the Department of Northern Affairs by Jim Lotz in 1961 featured a map of the squatter areas. For instance, there were 310 squatter homes downtown, occupied by an average of three persons, one-third of the downtown population.

Here is a list of dwellings – shacks, cabins, trailers, etc. – in 1961: Whiskey Flats (S), now occupied by the SS Klondike: 51.

Whiskey Flats (N), now Rotary Peace Park: 56.

First Avenue, near Hanson between the tracks and the river: eight. home to trendy condos: 56.

Two Mile Hill: six.

Assisted suicide ruling is a landmark for Canadian rights

B

efore the introduction of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms in 1982, many of our laws were anachronisms from a bygone era when the freedom of individuals were of lesser concern to policy makers.

Since the introduction of the charter, individual rights in Canada have advanced in leaps and bounds. Friday’s Supreme Court decision effectively legalizing assisted suicide for those suffering from “grievous and irremediable” illnesses was one of the most important advances we have seen in a while.

The decision is a welcome reversal of a two-decades-old decision where a narrow majority of the court invoked the “sanctity of life” to deny Sue Rodriguez relief from a life of suffering with Lou Gehrig’s disease. Rodriguez later did succeed in taking her own life with the help of a doctor whose identity was never found out publicly.

Critics of the ruling claim that the court has ventured down a dangerous, slippery slope. They assert that allowing capable adults suffering from grievous and irremediable illnesses to make the voluntary choice to seek assistance in dying somehow puts the

If there is anything unfortunate – albeit understandable – about the Supreme Court’s decision it is that its effect has been suspended for a year. This means that thousands more Canadians will be forced to suffer a painful death while politicians scramble to do what they should have done years ago and put in place the necessary safeguards.

Scientist to share saga of wandering White River Ash Erling Friis-Baastad Special to the News

O

ne of Yukon’s many fascinating geological features is the thick band of lightgrey volcanic ash readily found where topsoil has been worn away in the south and central regions of the territory.

It dates back to about 1,200 years ago, when Mount Churchill, easternmost of the volcanic Wrangell peaks in Alaska, exploded. Ash from that event wreaked havoc with people and ecosystems in Alaska and Yukon.

The ash continues to yield surprises, some from as far away as Europe.

Britta Jensen is a Quaternary geologist – that is, a scientist who specializes in studying the geologic record of the past 2 million years.

She will visit the territory to share those surprises with Yukoners in Whitehorse and Dawson City on February 15 and 16 respectively.

It turns out that great Holocene cataclysm still has much to teach us.

“I study ash not necessarily to study volcanoes,” says Jensen. “We use the ash beds we find to help us date and correlate sediments.”

Each ash bed has its own unique geochemical signature, which acts like a fingerprint, says the geologist. For instance, if we find volcanic ash in the Dawson City area, you can use its geochemical fingerprint to identify it elsewhere, perhaps around Fairbanks, and which then ties these two sites together and perhaps tells us how old they are.

Jensen has conducted most of her PhD research in the Yukon and Alaska, where volcanic ash beds, like the White River Ash, are readily visible. “You can just walk up to a site and look at it,” she says.

In Europe (and eastern North America) it’s a different story. The closest volcanoes are in Iceland – still quite far away. The Icelandic volcanoes don’t tend to erupt as vigorously as those of Alaska and

the Yukon, so the ash that falls in Europe is not usually so thick.

The fine ash does eventually get incorporated in the European geological record. For example, bits of ash are found in peat cores.

“Europeans use ash beds just as we use them – to date and correlate different geological sites,” she says. The difference is that in North America geologists tend to stay in areas where the ash can be readily seen. In Europe, geologists rely more on microscopes to find and study the minute ash bits.

“They call these bits cryptotephra because they’re not visible to the naked eye.”

At one point during her PhD research, Jensen and her team made contact with Irish scientist Sean Pyne-O’Donnell. He had

been working in Newfoundland, peering into peat cores. “And sure enough he found ash beds – one contained White River Ash. PyneO’Donnell became the second author on the paper Transatlantic Distribution of the Alaskan White River Ash (2014).

“He’d been working in Europe his whole career and we’d been working in North America our whole careers and we finally came together on this project,” says Jensen.

“When he identified the White River Ash in Newfoundland, he said, ‘You know, this geochemical fingerprint of White River Ash is like an ash from a particular European bed; we never could figure out where it came from.’” Working together, they have shown that

this unknown European ash is the White River Ash, which has now turned up across the east coast of North America, Greenland, Ireland and Germany.

That’s more than 7,000 kilometres of sailing through the stratosphere, high above the troposphere where our weather happens and rain can the wash ash away.

The Mount Churchill eruption was a big one, says Jensen. But the thing is, it was not all that big; it wasn’t a super volcano on par with the ancient Yellowstone super eruptions – cataclysms that repeat only every several 100,000 years or so and could obviously send ash very great distances.

Volcanic ash can have a big impact on humans, even when from much smaller, more common events, says Jensen. Consider Iceland’s 2010 Eyjafjallajokull eruption. “We’re talking a hundredth the size of the White River event,” she says. “That Icelandic volcano shut down European airspace for a week and cost the airline industry $3 billion.

“We honestly never thought that a eruption of the White

River size would spread ash 7,000 kilometres,” she says. “The White River eruption was huge, but not so huge that eruptions of that size haven’t already happened in historical times.”

“It’s something we want to be prepared for … it doesn’t take a super-massive eruption to spread ash 7,000 kilometres.”

And there’s much more to the White River Ash story, including a possible reason why Athabaskan is spoken in a portion of the U.S. Southwest. There’s enough history embedded in the White River ash for a book, says Jensen.

She says she has not heard of anyone being injured or becoming ill during the blackout, and adds everyone staying in the recreation centre is in good spirits despite being very tired.

The District of Kitimat opened its Emergency Operations Centre on Friday night in order to organize extra equipment, and private contractors were brought in to help with road clearing.

Crews made significant headway on Saturday as the snowfall stopped, with at least limited access to side streets available in most areas of Kitimat, but the road leading to Kitamaat Village remained covered in snow and ice.

The nearby community of Terrace also experienced a massive snow dump between Thursday and Saturday, with about 159 centimetres blanketing the city.

“It was about minus 45 degrees Celsius. The second night we made a fire and carved out some beds, then insulated them. And we saw the northern lights, which was amazing.”

Most of the equipment was donated from sponsors but the pair had to fork out the rest of the funds for the trip out of their own pockets.

They also have camera gear and hope to turn the entire experience into a documentary someday.

As Kersten explains it, the goal upon their return is to communicate positive values to children about the importance of having a relationship with the environment.

“We want to give them more insights on how nature should play a role in their lives,” the Parisian said.

Workshops and presentations have already been lined up at a school in Paris, and Lazenbury, 28, has contacts with the Army Cadet Force in England, which teaches children survival skills.

There’s also a plan for students in Paris to communicate with schools in the Yukon, as part of a cross-cultural exchange, Kersten said.

Kersten and Lazenbury met six years ago while studying at Lancaster University in England.

After they graduated in 2011, they began brainstorming destinations to explore around the world.

They finally settled on the Yukon because Kersten had spent some time here a few years ago, when he travelled from Whitehorse to Dawson City over 34 days.

He wrote and published a book about his experience, called Un Trek en Or, meaning “a golden trek.”

During that trip, he forged relationships with citizens of the First Nation of Nacho Nyak Dun. “In Mayo we learned how to fish, how to prepare, smoke and dry it for the winter,” he said.

“They make sure nothing is wasted. It’s these ideas that we want to bring back to Europe.”

Lazenbury said another im-

portant objective is to convey the importance of elders and the roles they play in First Nation communities.

“In Europe, elders are seen as a burden to the younger generation and we just put them in retirement homes,” he said.

“But here, elders have such an important role for children, teaching them about life and how to survive. That’s something we want to bring back too.”

Kersten suffered a minor setback on Monday when he sprained his ankle playing soccer.

The pair now plan on leaving Whitehorse on Friday.

“Maybe it was a good omen,” Kersten said, walking around with the help of a ski pole.

“We still need to prepare a lot of things and talk to people before we leave.”

Seasoned Yukon team set for Canada Games Tom Patrick News Reporter

ukon is sending a small but experienced team to the Canada Winter Games, beginning this weekend in Prince George, B.C. The territory will be represented by a team of 159, including 100 athletes, many of who have previous Games experience under their belt.

It is the smallest team Yukon has sent to a Canada Winter Games since the 2003 Games in New Brunswick.

“We just want them to perform to the best of their ability with a feeling of pride and fair play,” said Yukon Chef de Mission Trevor Twardochleb. “We are very proud of our athletes because a lot of them are very dedicated and committed and we invest a lot of money – not just the government, but the sports (organizations), the parents and everyone else – into these kids. So we want them to do crazy good.”

Yukon’s most recent national champ is obviously one to watch.

Figure skater Rachel Pettitt will take to the ice in the second week of the Games. The 15-year-old won Yukon’s first-ever gold at the 2015 National Skating Championships last month. Prince George will be Pettitt’s second Canada Games, having competed at the 2011 Games in Halifax at just 11 years old.

“I’m super excited,” Pettitt told the News after qualifying for the Games in November. “I had so much fun when I first went, and I was so young, so it was a huge experience for me. I feel like I’m ready to place, hopefully, at Canada Games and skate well, as well as it being an awesome experience.”

Pettitt also won two silver and a bronze for Yukon at the 2012 Arctic Winter Games.

Another figure skater to keep an eye on is Special Olympian Michael Sumner, who won silver at the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Sumner will first compete at the Special Olympics B.C. Winter Games in Kamloops next week before heading to Prince George.

Three of Yukon’s five medals at the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax came in cross-country skiing. This year’s squad will attempt to surpass that.

Female skip Alyssa Meger curled for Yukon at the 2014 Arctic Games, placing fourth.

Katelyn Vowk is hoping to hit top speeds in B.C. The Alpine skier, who won a gold and silver at the 2014 Arctics, is one of two set to represent Yukon.

Three athletes are lone Yukoners in sports down in Prince George.

Brown-belt Jacob Melanson will compete in judo, synchronized swimmer Catherine Seal will compete in the solo competition, and speedskater Michael Ritchie will race short-track. Ritchie pocketed three silver and a bronze at the 2014 Arctic Games.

Yukon is sending seven squash players to the Canada Games and for two of them it’ll be a second go. Mustafa Syed and Eshan Idrees both played for Yukon at the 2011 Games in Halifax. Syed also produced two wins and two losses at the 2014 Canadian Junior Squash Championships last April.

Gymnasts Reena Coyne, 14, and Emily King, 11, have both won Arctic Games bronze in team events. Next week they’ll be facing older, tougher competition.

Canada Games swimmer shines at synchro championships Tom Patrick News Reporter

T

he best was saved for last at the Yukon Synchronized Swimming Championships on Sunday.

Northern Nova swimmer Catherine Seal capped the event with a first place finish in the junior solo category at the championship hosted by Synchro Yukon at the Canada Games Centre.

It was the 17-year-old’s last competition before she represents Yukon at the Canada Winter Games in two weeks in Prince George, B.C. “It’s pretty exciting,” said Seal. “I haven’t really been to an event like that before, so it’ll be interesting.

“I’ve always wanted to go to the Games, so it’s cool it’s actually happening.”

Seal, who is the only synchronized swimmer Yukon is sending to the Games, will compete in figures and solo in Prince George.

She performed a routine that has a military theme at the championships.

“It’s definitely different from what I usually do, so I’m pretty excited about that,” said Seal.

“We were trying to come up with themes and (coach) Heather (O’Carroll) came up with it and she thought it would be a good idea because it’s something different from what I usually do. I usually do slower stuff, so it’s good to change it up.”

Seal was one of 11 Northern Novas synchro club swimmers at the championships, which featured figures, two other solo routines, a pairs routine and the first team performance in years.

“There’s never been one since I’ve been with the club, and I’ve been with the club seven years,” said Synchro Yukon

president Shannon Duke. “It’s really exciting for us – it’s been a goal trying to get enough kids at the same level.”

Within the team performance was a first for the championships. Camron Maguire, who was one of six swimmers in the team, became the first male to perform at the annual

event.

“In the future it’s going to be in the Olympics; males have never been allowed at the Olympic level, it’s only been a female sport,” said Duke.

“There are clubs coming out that are all males.”

F

or the third year in a row, the same two teams played down in the same championship and same team won.

Team Smallwood defeated Team Balsam to win the Yukon Mixed Doubles Curling Championships on Saturday at the Whitehorse Curling Club.

The husband and wife team of Robert and Jody Smallwood will now represent Yukon a third straight time at the Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Trials for the world championships in Ottawa next month.

“I always want to go and give it our best effort, see if we can get a little farther up in the standings,” said Robert. “Our first year was pretty good. Last year … we fell short of a playoff

situation.

“This year we’ll see if we can come out of the gate with more wins that are needed for the playoff spot and move on to that next round if we can.”

The Smallwoods, who reached the quarterfinal of the world trials in 2013, defeated the team of skip Herbert Balsam and third Corrine Delaire for the spot.

Team Balsam scored four in the seventh end Saturday morning, but the Smallwoods put two up in the eighth to win 8-5.

The Smallwoods then scored three in the seventh end to win 12-2 and seal the deal in the best-of-three playdown.

“The first game, I thought we played pretty good. We were down one coming home – we had a good seventh end, came back, scored four. That was

all right,” said Balsam. “In the second game, I think we curled well, they just got the breaks.

That’s the way curling goes sometimes: you get the breaks.

“But that was the third year they’ve beat us, so we’re getting a little discouraged.

“It seems like it’s like that all the time: we play well in the first (game) … In the second game we get blown out for some reason.”

The Smallwoods have already had plenty of success on the sheets this season.

Robert and Jody, along with Yukon teammates Nicole Baldwin and Wade Scoffin, placed 10th at the 2015 Canadian Mixed Curling Championships in November. The team finished with five wins and four losses for the first winning record by a Yukon rink this millennium.

“It’s a lot better game than people think,” said Balsam. “It’s very strategic and it’s a lot of fun, actually. It’s just a fun as (regular) curling and it really develops your game too because you’ve got to be right on the money ... It really makes you concentrate on your shot.

“You get lots of rocks in house, lots of plays, tap-backs – you’ve got to make finesse shots.”

Campers & Trailers Ron, the first born son of Jacob and Mary Brown, was born in Leamington, Ontario in 1951. He, along with his younger brothers Dave and Jim were raised on a farm where they learned the value of hard work. Jake and Mary raised their boys in a Christian Mennonite home full of love and storytelling.

In 1971 Ron moved north to the Yukon to join his cousin and dear friend Bill Braun. Before he even knew what happened, he fell in love with his best friend and partner, Sheila McLennan. By 1974 they were married and were thrilled to welcome Ryan to their family in 1975. In 1977 there was great joy when Jordan completed their family.

Ron was a family man with a great love of God, his family and the outdoors.

When he was unable to be out hunting or fishing he spent much time regaling stories of those activities. Many Yukoners will remember Ron’s voice heard regularly on Saturday mornings on Trader Time.

Ron began his career in the Yukon as a self-employed roofer and sider.

He had a career change when he was hired to manage Woodland Creations.

His next career move found him working for the Council of Yukon Indians (later known as CYFN). He joined the Yukon Government Department of Education before moving to Yukon Housing where he spent the rest of his career in Government before failing health took him away from his position.

He was a God loving, generous man who was active in his church and the community. He, along with his wife and their children spent many summers at the local ball diamonds where ‘Ronnie’ could be seen on the pitcher’s mound while Sheila was score keeping for the Men’s fastball league.

Summers also found Ron dedicating much time to Marsh Lake Bible Camp where he touched the lives of many Yukon youth.

Ron was a mentor to many young adults over the years through the Bible Camp, the Whitehorse Baptist Church Youth Group and the College and Career Group of the Church. Sheila, Ryan, and Jordan have been on the receiving end of many testimonials in the days since Ron was called home.

Ron is survived by and will be forever missed by his wife of 41 years, Sheila, his son Ryan and his wife Neely of West Virginia, his daughter Jordan and her husband Mike of Whitehorse and his grandchildren Caden (and his mother Harmony), Emerson and Adelaide Brown and Micah, Ezra and Jude Grossman. He was also ‘Poppa Ron’ to many surrogate grandchildren. He will be missed by many nieces and nephews, extended family and his many friends from the Yukon, BC, Alberta, Ontario, Alaska and beyond.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, February 14 at 3:00 pm at the High Country Inn Convention Centre.
