City okays cull of fifty urban deer ARNE PETRYSHEN

Cranbrook city council approved a 50 deer cull that will take place in the next few weeks. At the Wednesday, Feb. 11 budget meeting, city staff recommended that council not go forward with a late winter cull, recommending instead that council seek a Wildlife Act Permit from Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations to go ahead with a fall 2015 cull.

The city’s permit expires March 15, 2015. Coun. Norma Blissett said she was in favour of going ahead with the cull. “The previous council had received a permit from the Ministry to cull 50 deer,” Blissett said. “We need to act on that now before the spring fawns are born otherwise we’ve got a bigger problem come fall.”

UBC student working on robotic ocean crossing TRE VOR CR AWLEY

Sailing across the Atlantic Ocean isn’t a relatively big deal nowadays ever since Christopher Columbus first did it in 1492. However, a team of UBC students are hoping to make history again with a transatlantic crossing by boat, this time with a unique twist. This transatlantic crossing will be by an unmanned and autonomous robotic ‘sailbot’.

And if all goes to plan, a Cranbrook native will be in on that history-making event. Neil Dobie, a fourth-year mechanical engineering student, has been involved with the project since the idea was conceived. Initially, Dobie and four other students got together to resurrect the sailbot program, which had been defunct for a few years. In 2011, the group began building small sailbots

and entering them into regattas around North America. And their vessel started winning. “After we went and did everything we could do with this regatta, we went, ‘Well, what’s next? There was this thing called the he Microtransat Challenge, and that’s where you cross the Atlantic Ocean autonomously and we said, ‘Well, lets do it’,” Dobie said. With the team growing to

It’s not the first crack at a transatlantic crossing with a robotic sailboat; other European groups have tried, and the U.S. Navy recently made an attempt.

Council paves plan for roads ARNE PETRYSHEN

Council pushed forward on the 2015 Annual Capital Roads Program at the Wednesday, Feb. 11 budget meeting that will see a number of roads repaved. At the Jan. 14 budget meeting, city staff put forward two options for the road program. At that meeting council decided to pursue a surface level approach — hoping to pave as much street as possible for the money. On Wednesday,

council directed city staff to undertake removal, reshaping and repaving of the roads identified in the attachment, with the emphases was on maximizing the amount of paving that could take place. Engineering Services assessed the roads based on whether the water, sanitary sewer and storm water infrastructure have a projected life of at least 15 years.
