Interior Health continues to move towards privatizing laundry services after completing a 90-day mandatory consultation process with the Hospital Employees Union.

The health authority says the impacted positions include 17 full-time jobs at Kootenay Lake Hospital, which provides regional laundry services for Nelson, Castlegar and Trail, and one full time job at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail, plus part-time and casual employees.

The HEU said in all, about 25 laundry workers in Nelson could be affected.

In November, when the potential changes were announced, the union said it hoped the privatization could be stopped.

“We believe there is still hope,” said Mike Old, HEU communications director.

He added that about a decade ago there was talk of privatization by Interior Health but the HEU stopped the changes.

Under the collective agreement, the health authority had to do a three-month consultation with the union before proceeding with its plan.

Interior Health announced that it is entering the next stage of a process that will determine the future of its laundry services, by seeking what it called “request for solutions” from pre-qualified providers.

“We know this is difficult news for our employees who have worked hard to make our laundry plants efficient,” said Alan Davies, Interior Health’s director for support services. “But as we’ve noted from the outset, the decision to explore alternatives isn’t about the efficiency of our operations.

It’s about avoiding future significant spending to replace aging equipment, an investment we can’t make when considering other health-care medical equipment priorities.”

February’s warm weather trend has area on flood watch

It's not so much an El Niño but rather a positive Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) identified as the culprit that's triggered rapid snow melts.

Whatever you call it, the very warm temperatures and rain this winter have reduced the West Kootenay snow pack to 85 per cent of normal.

“The influence that has had more relevance this winter is the PDO,” says local forecaster Ron Lakeman.

Typically El Niño or El Niña, which refer to a southern oscillation of sea surface temperatures, come and go on a yearly basis, he told the Trail Times Thursday.

“But PDO refers to a 10-year span of monitoring the sea surface temperature of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of North America, including B.C. “Those surface temperatures have been exceedingly mild this year, so the positive PDO phase has been the number one influence on our temperatures this winter.”

Normal highs in February are usually around 3 degrees (C), he continued, but the last few days temperatures have reached 8 C. While rain is expected Friday, a cooling trend could hit the area by Sunday as a cold airmass across Alberta is predicted to flow into the West Kootenay region.

“There is potential for below freezing

by Sunday night,” Lakeman noted. “And a few computer models are suggesting it could be cooler than normal toward the latter part of next week.”

While rapid snow melt in the valleys and at mid-elevations triggered flooding in the Nelson and Slocan area, higher up, it's been winter as usual.

According to the Red Mountain Resort snow report, 60 centimetres (cm) of snow has fallen in the first two weeks of the month compared to the usual average of 34 cm.

“The snow pack prior to the recent rainfall event was generally at or below normal for the Columbia Basin,” explains BC Hydro's Mary Anne Coules. “The total volumes are not expected to change much...although there is now more snow at higher elevations and less snow at lower elevations.”

Crews have already been out with the flusher truck to wash sidewalks down the Victoria Street corridor up to the Gulch area, and in front of city hall, the Trail Aquatic and Leisure Centre and other downtown sites and amenities.

“With this warm weather, we are a month ahead of schedule,” said Abenante.

“We should be on the street next week with the sweeper, ready to clean up the grit.”

B.C.’s chief coroner has called on the B.C. government to look for ways to strengthen its graduated licensing system for young drivers and consider a pilot project of electronic speed enforcement in high-risk areas to reduce the number of young people who die in car crashes.

“It hasn’t been reviewed since, so I think it’s a very practical suggestion on the part of the coroner’s office to take a look at the program and see if there are some means to further strengthen it,” Stone said.

The coroners’ analysis showed 68 of 106 drivers were at the “novice” stage when they died. Of those, 18 had consumed alcohol and seven were driving with too many passengers who were not family members, and without a supervisor.

There were 14 deaths of young drivers with a learner’s licence, the first stage of the graduated system.

Of those, 11 were driving with no supervisor, 10 had consumed alcohol.

Cypress Mountain joins growing list of closed ski hills

Cypress Mountain will close its slopes for the time being, after three months of slushing through poor weather conditions.

The mountain made the announcement on its website Tuesday, saying it is on “standby” but hopes to be back up and have its chairs running before the hill’s traditional season’s end in late April.

“With the weatherman continuing to be uncooperative over the next forecast period, Cypress will now have our operations on standby and ready to re-open at the first sign of new snowfall or a snowmaking opportunity,” the website reads. “This winter has been a challenge so far and we have done everything we could to provide the best on-mountain operation possible since we first opened almost 3 months ago on November 15th.”

RCMP improperly took guns during flood: watchdog THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - The RCMP watchdog says Mounties improperly took guns from flood-stricken homes in Alberta two years ago - seizures that angered High River residents and fostered mistrust of the national police force.

In a report released Thursday, the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission blames the mistakes on poor leadership, lack of guidance, and failure to communicate with the public.

The RCMP had legal authority to forcibly enter evacuated homes during the natural disaster and even to seize loose firearms in plain view, the commission report

says.

The Mounties say the guns could have posed a hazard, as there were reports of breakins and thefts, and there were over 300 people - including one high-risk offender - who refused to evacuate.

Under the Criminal Code, such seizures did not require a court-approved warrant, but officers failed to take the necessary next step of reporting their actions to a judge.

In addition, RCMP members exceeded their authority by seizing some guns that were properly secured or that were not “in plain view,” the commission found.

In all, 609 firearms were taken from 105 homes.

“While RCMP members,

acting on their own initiative and with little guidance, may have acted with public safety in mind, they nonetheless failed to comply with legal requirements concerning the seizure of firearms,” the report says.

“Had the RCMP reported their seizures to the court, it may have addressed many of the concerns and criticisms from residents, the media, and politicians.”

In June 2013, heavy rainfall caused the Highwood River to swell, uprooting trees and engulfing cars and homes.

During the crisis, the RCMP, provincial and municipal police, the military, first responders and volunteers

rescued some 800 people.

Overall, emergency personnel, including the Mounties, did “a remarkable job” responding to this natural disaster in the initial days, the report says.

What should have been a story about heroic actions of many RCMP members during the devastating flood turned out to be “something far different” for the force, the commission notes.

The commission says RCMP leadership failed to adequately plan for communications with the public during the catastrophe, which prompted difficulties when word of the forced entries and seizures began circulating.

THE CANADIAN PRESS MONTREAL - The union representing safety and maintenance workers at Canadian Pacific Railway issued strike notice on the company Thursday and could be off the job by the weekend if negotiations on a new contract fail.

The 1,800 workers, represented by Unifor, said if a deal cannot be reached by midnight Saturday, their members will be off the job.

A spokesperson for Teck’s Trail operations said the company would not comment on the situation while negotiations are ongoing.

It comes after the Teamsters Canada Rail conference union, representing 3,300 locomotive engineers conductors, trainmen and yardmen across Canada, served CP with the same deadline.

The labour strife could hamper freight service across the country, but negotiations with both unions are ongoing in Montreal this week with the help of federal mediators.

Unifor’s national rail director Brian Stevens said the two sides remain far apart on the issues, which include working conditions, representation, health and safety.

“Anything is entirely possible. Our intention here is to bargain a negotiated settlement,” Stevens said.

“We have a long way to go, and there’s a short time to get there.”

In the event of a strike, Canadian Pacific (TSX:CP) said this week it would “implement its extensive contingency plan by deploying qualified management employees to maintain a reduced freight service on its Canadian network.”

Stevens said that in his opinion, a strike would have an immediate impact on locomotive availability and the overall safety and maintenance of the fleet.

“The locomotive fleet will be impacted because the bulk of our employees at CP rail are tradespersons,” he said. “There are safety standards to both the locomotive fleet and the rail cars, and our members are the professionals who are trained and qualified safety and maintenance professionals.”

Community spirit a vital part of village’s success

ecisions made by municipal councils impact a multitude of services provided to residents.

These services include things such as water, sewers, roads, fire and paramedics, garbage and recycling, transit, policing, recreation and many more.

Municipal councils are empowered by the province to address the existing and future needs of their community. Council members embody the public welfare of their communities which often means trying to balance their vision with the concerns expressed by the people and organizations that are affected by Council decisions.

The management of social and health programs are not explicitly part of a municipal council’s mandate.

However, even though social and health programs are not necessarily the responsibility of municipal councils, we find ourselves working more and more on social issues to create a healthy, vibrant community.

When I first entered

into public service, I was eager to start making my community better.

Every project I undertook was with the intention of creating a safe, healthy, active community full of excitement, community spirit and community pride.

I soon realized just how many people, groups, and service organizations were already working very hard on our behalf with the same goals and intentions.

One prime example of community service in the Village of Fruitvale is our Beaver Valley Lions Club Bingo.

Here we have a small group of volunteers who demonstrate the true meaning of service.

They are at the hall setting up and preparing early every Wednesday and are still there late in the evening taking down after all others have gone home.

Even though the actual Bingo game doesn’t start until 6 p.m, people arrive as early as 4 p.m. to sit around, play cards or just socialize. There are potluck dinners, many stories and much laughter shared.

Community Comment Yes, the regulars have their specific tables they like to sit at, and because of that, we have people watching out for people; if someone doesn’t show up there is a group of people looking into why.

The Beaver Valley Lions Club not only gives back to the community through the significant amount of funds they raise and donate to projects all over the Lower Columbia, they also provide a vital outreach creating community spirit through community engagement.

I recently read an article published by the Harwood Institute on building community spirit that inspired me, and I quote; “Authentic community

spirit is vital because it reflects the true sense of connection people have to one another. It is the belief that there are issues, challenges, and opportunities that can only be met when we act together. It is a desire to know what exists beyond oneself – how others think, what they do, what they need – that allows us to live and grow together as a community. Bricks and mortar can give us places to eat, meet and play – all vital to a community; but alone they cannot create the spirit that must fill those places in order for there actually to be a functioning community.

For that we need citizens and leaders alike to find what makes our community thrive and what steps we must take together to forge and sustain authentic community spirit.”

Input from residents to Council is a key component to enhancing the quality of life in the community.

Your feedback helps us align the services provided with the needs of the community.

We have numerous programs running through the

Village and BV Recreation from our Beaver Valley Youth Club to our Age Friendly Seniors’ activities.

In my opinion it is the community spirit and the social engagement aspect that makes our community “home”.

I am proud to say Community Spirit is very much alive and well in the Village of Fruitvale.

Our council is committed to continue support and work with our community service groups and programmers to ensure we grow and flourish.

All that aside, it’s all good until your sewer backs up!

From one political gang to another

An editorial from the Winnipeg Free Press When gang members defect to rival outfits, the motives are pretty simple. They’re either on the outs with the old gang, or they’ve got a better deal with the new team. The differences in gang philosophy, if there are any, are irrelevant. Staying on top is what counts.

Politics, of course, is a little more principled, sometimes, but there are parallels with gang dynamics.

Former premier Gary Doer, for example, could easily have been a Conservative or a Liberal, but he saw more opportunities with the New Democrats, Manitoba’s top outfit for the past 40 years. Mr. Doer discarded the party’s old socialist ideas, renamed it Today’s NDP in 1999 and successfully moved the party to the centre.

Nothing wrong with any of that.

Alberta rancher and fierce federal Tory Jack Horner is a different case. Mr. Horner hated bilingualism, the CBC, socialism, unions and so on, but in 1977 he switched parties to become a cabinet minister in Pierre Trudeau’s Liberal government.

Belinda Stronach worked to unite the right, then joined the left, leaving boyfriend Peter MacKay behind on the Conservative benches, before deciding she was bored with it all.

Winston Churchill crossed the floor twice before becoming prime minister.

In these and other cases, ideology was less important than personal success.

The latest switcheroo, however, is one of the most remarkable in recent Canadian history. Not only did longtime Conservative loyalist Eve Adams bolt for the Liberals this week, so did her fiancé, Dimitri Soudas, a key Harper soldier who helped manage the Conservatives’ 2011 election and was, until recently, working on the party’s 2015 re-election strategy.

The Harper gang may not be unhappy about losing Ms. Adams, but the desertion of Mr. Soudas to the enemy camp could be enormously damaging, depending on how many trade secrets he is prepared to share.

Like other defectors, Ms. Adams has tried to frame her move in high moral terms.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper, she said, was a bully and the Conservatives no longer represented her values. She said she opposed the income-splitting plan.

Of course, she was perfectly happy with Mr. Harper for the last decade and she had vigorously supported his tax plan. The real problem was the national Conservative council had decided she could not run for office because of misconduct over a nomination issue.

Well, as a lifestyle politician, she needed to go somewhere and Justin Trudeau’s gang looked like the best bet.

As for Mr. Soudas, his treach-

ery and backstabbing is more serious because of his ability to divulge Mr. Harper’s darkest secrets to the opposition.

Of course hundreds of politicians have crossed the floors of Parliament and their provincial legislatures over the decades.

But what does it say about politics and ideology if elected officials can switch parties as easily as they change their underwear?

How is it possible that Ms. Adams and Mr. Soudas were fierce advocates of a Conservative political philosophy one day, and then a completely different ideology the next day?

Well, it could be that the bedrock principles of the Liberals and Conservatives aren’t that different, except perhaps in style. Or it could be that the deserters are no better than common gang members, who can get their rewards from any political outfit that looks like it might end up on top.

There are many theories today about whether ideology is still significant in a fastchanging world where most parties are trying to appeal to the perceived needs of the general public, rather than promoting deeply held ideals about how society should be organized.

The crude self-interest demonstrated by Mr. Soudas and Ms. Adams, however, diminishes the business of politics and reinforces the public’s cynicism about the motives of their representatives.

An editorial from the St. John’s Telegram No one can insult everyone in the room like Don Rickles can.

At 88, the veteran American funnyman is physically frail, but can still make mincemeat out of anyone who dares try to outwit him.

Toronto Sun columnist Ted Woloshyn described last year being ribbed by Rickles when he went to interview him in his dressing room.

When Rickles asked him what he wanted to drink, Woloshyn said he’d have a rye and ginger.

Rickles stared at him for a second: “Well get up and make it yourself.”

According to Woloshyn, Frank Sinatra used to tell a story years ago about the time he and some friends were dining at a restaurant. Rickles came over and made a request.

He told Sinatra he was dining with a woman who didn’t believe he knew Sinatra, and asked if he would come over and say hello.

Sinatra agreed and shortly afterward came by and said, “Hi, Don, how are you doing?”

Rickles replied, “Can’t you

see I’m eating, Frank?”

Rickles often pushed the envelope. A few years ago, he made a crack about U.S. President Barack Obama that made waves.

“I shouldn’t make fun of the blacks,” Rickles said during a tribute to Shirley MacLaine.

“President Obama is a personal friend of mine. He was over to the house yesterday, but the mop broke.”

Everyone knew it was his schtick. He was not a racist or a bore at heart.

So, what does that make Don Cherry?

Well, he’s no Don Rickles.

Rickles had a way of instantly making the funniest and most outrageous retort. Cherry just seems to open his mouth and let things roll out before his brain kicks in.

As happened on Saturday night, when the NHL “Coach’s Corner” star called co-host Ron MacLean a “barbarian” and “savage” for eating seal meat at Mallard Cottage in St. John’s.

MacLean later admitted he knew he’d get Cherry on the go by mentioning it to him. But there’s no clear indication that Cherry is only playing the buffoon when he responds in this

way. Rather, his thoughts seem to belch forth unfiltered.

Speaking at then Toronto mayor Rob Ford’s inauguration years ago, he taunted “all the pinkos out there who ride bicycles.” He said Ford will be the best mayor out there, and told his opponents, “Put that in your pipe, you left-wing kooks.”

Fans — and therefore producers — seem to like this occasional lapse into Archie Bunker bombast.

But if he’s not just joking around, it’s hard to rationalize giving such an over-paid windbag a national podium to say what he says.

Cherry did apologize for the seal comments.

“I have no problem with my friends who are hunters and eat venison and duck,” he said on Twitter, “Just the same as I have no problem with people who hunt seals and (eat) seal meat.”

Really? Then why did you say it? If it was just a joke, it was a flop. If it wasn’t, it was ignorant.

It will all blow over, of course. All will be forgotten.

That is, until the next time he decides to open his mouth.

John Douglas Rothwell

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Douglas Rothwell on February 10, 2015 at the age of 88. He passed away peacefully at Rosewood Village with his children by his side.

Dad was born in Trail, BC, on July 5, 1926. He grew up in Fruitvale and went into the army at age 17. He later met Agnes and on September 1, 1950 they married, at which time he built the family home in Montrose. They had a great circle of friends with whom they loved to travel. Dad also enjoyed curling, golfing, and fishing. He even did square dancing. Later in life he enjoyed partaking in the BC Senior Games.

Dad’s greatest joy in life was spending time with his family and friends at his cabin at Christina Lake.

Dad worked as a machinist at Cominco until his retirement. Dad was a volunteer with the Montrose Fire Dept., the Montrose council, the Trail Hospital Board as well as being a Rotary Member. One of his great achievements was to help establish the Beaver Valley Ambulance Service.

Dad moved in Rosewood Village on December 2, 2008. He loved to joke around with the staff. He loved their interaction, the witty banter, as it kept them all entertained. The family would like to thank the staff for the excellent care dad received and for putting up with us.

And a special thanks to the Veterans Affairs for all of their support.

Dad is lovingly remembered by his son Gordon (Carol) of Calgary, daughters Joan (Pat) Vallier, Tammy (Kelly) Campbell, Sandra (Daniel Sager) Rothwell, of Trail and Colleen (Ed) Ghirardosi of Montrose.

Papa will be missed by his many grandchildren Jarrett (Jo-Dee), Allison (Mike), Stephen (Laura), Vanessa, Shawn, Tiffany (TJ), Austin, Justin, Devin, Tyler as well as his five greatgrandchildren, Kailey, Jayce, Kenleigh, Stephen Jr., Tatum and a baby boy on the way.

Doug was predeceased by his loving wife Agnes in 2010. His parents Mary Jean and John Henry Rothwell, his brother Jim, sisters Betty Ross, Barbara Drouin and Norma Green.

A celebration of Doug’s life will be held at the Montrose Hall on Tuesday, February 17 at 2:00 pm. Bill Clark of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services™ has been entrusted with arrangements.

Irene Buratto It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our mother Irene Buratto on February 10th with her daughters by her side.

She was predeceased by her husband Sante Buratto in 1993 and son-in-law John Cristofanetti in 2004. Irene was born on April 25,1922 in Santi Angeli, Treviso, Italy.

She joined Sante in Canada in 1951 where they built a loving life together. Irene will live on in the hearts of her daughters Elena and Lucie (Chuck), grandchildren Elenita (Geoff ), Julie (Sam ), Jason and Michael and great-grandchildren Kailas, Therin, Mariah, Sammy and James and numerous nieces and nephews in Italy.

Mom was devoted to her children, grandchildren and to her Catholic faith.

After dad passed, mom maintained his tradition of a healthy and very productive garden. She loved to sit outside at the end of a busy gardening day with a glass of wine and a cigarette, and was always ready to offer advice or sit and pray with you.

The family wishes to express appreciation and gratitude for the loving care mom received during her last years in Poplar Ridge at Kootenay Boundary Hospital. Your compassion, supportive friendship and affection will last in our hearts forever.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at 11:00 am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Father Bart van Roijen, Celebrant. Entombment will take place at the Mountain View Cemetery Mausoleum.

Journalist remembered for ability to face danger, tell stories THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - Bob Simon was kidnapped in Iraq, beaten in Belfast and held at gunpoint in Romania during a nearly 50-year career at CBS News. His bravery made the mundane way he died - in the back seat of a car on Manhattan’s West Side Highway Wednesday night - seem all the more tragic.

Simon’s work outlives him, and not just on reputation.

A story he was working on with his producer, daughter Tanya Simon, about searching for an Ebola cure, is scheduled to air on “60 Minutes” this weekend. The newsmagazine will have a full tribute to Simon on Feb. 22.

He died at age 73.

Simon was a foreign correspondent in the heyday of CBS News and broadcast

news in general. He was one of the last to leave Vietnam following the fall of Saigon in 1973, and reported on conflicts in Northern Ireland, Nigeria, Portugal, Cyprus, Argentina, India, Romania, Bosnia and, most indelibly, the Middle East.

He often said he was better known in Israel when he was stationed there than he was in the U.S., something he may have wished was untrue. A story in the late 1980s that showed Israeli soldiers beating Palestinian boys during the Intifada earned him so many threats that he needed to hire security for his home.

During the first Gulf War in 1991, he was taken by Iraqi forces near the Kuwait-Saudi border.

He and three colleagues were held and beaten severely for six weeks, after which

While he was held, one of his New York colleagues prepared an obituary reel - kind of a reverse psychology, hoping it would never be used. Following his release and return to New York, it was handed to him. It took Simon months to watch.

“When you look at your obit, it sort of reminds you how close you came to being dead,” he said.

Jeffrey Fager, then a young producer at CBS News and now executive producer of “60 Minutes,” said he was always eager to hear Simon’s take on a story, even if many others covered it.

Simon would usually notice something others hadn’t, he said.

Simon had the hardware, including some 27 Emmy Awards. His impact may be better felt in the words of younger correspondents who followed his path. Anderson Cooper nearly broke down speaking about his death on CNN Wednesday night, saying he felt intimidated walking the same hallways with Simon.

“When I try to write really well, I listen for Bob’s voice,” said NBC News correspondent Richard Engel, in an email from Iraq Thursday. “Sometimes I can just hear it the ups and downs, the simple phrase to button up a complex thought - but then when I think I’ve got it, it’s gone too quickly, just like Bob. “He was a brilliant writer and journalist who had the amazing ability to be brave, intelligent and witty all at the same time and make it look effortless,” Engel said. “He was the gold standard.

Without him, our profession is diminished.”

Love is in the air

L

ove is in the air. From red roses to chocolates to jewelry, the modern day celebration of Valentine’s Day bears little resemblance to its ancient Roman and Christian roots.

In the middle of February, ancient Romans celebrated the fertility festival of Lupercalia. The festival opened with the sacrifice of a goat for fertility, and a dog for purification. The goat’s hide was turned into strips that were then dipped into the sacrificial blood. The strips were used to whip young women, who lined up for the beating because they believed it would make them more fertile in the coming year.

Later in the day, a lottery paired up the city’s unmarried women and men for the remainder of the year. Sometimes, the lottery got it right, and a couple that fell in love louise was married at the end of the year.

During the 5th cenEveryday Theology tury, when Christianity was the official religion of the Roman empire, Lupercalia was outlawed; in its place, Pope Gelasius declared February 14 Saint Valentine’s Day. Saint Valentine was a third century priest during the reign of the Emperor Claudius II. Claudius had prohibited young people from marrying because he thought that unmarried men made better soldiers than men with wives and children. Valentine defied Claudius’ edict and performed marriages in secret. In 269 AD, Valentine was beaten, stoned and decapitated.

A legend associated with Valentine’s imprisonment and execution has done much over the centuries to establish him as a romantic figure.

According to the story, while he was in prison, Valentine healed the daughter of one of the Roman judges who was to decide his fate, and he fell in love with her. On the day of his execution, he sent her a note and signed it “From your Valentine”, the salutation immortalized in Valentine’s Day greetings.

The association of the feast of Saint Valentine with greetings of love began to gain traction in medieval times; by 1400, written Valentine’s Day messages began to appear. Towards the middle of the 18th century, friends and lovers of all social classes exchanged symbols of affection. By 1900, commercial cards began to replace handwritten notes, and at some point, Valentine’s Day morphed into the hugely successful commercial celebration of today.

In the United States, an estimated 200 million roses are grown for February 14, when 180 million Valentine’s Day cards will be exchanged, and six million couples will become engaged. The National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates that Valentine’s Day spending will reach a staggering $18.9 billion this year.

Here in Canada, we are less extravagant.

According to the Retail Council of Canada, in 2013 Canadian shoppers averaged $37 on Valentine’s Day purchases. That same year in the United States, American shoppers spent an average of $130.97, and this year’s NRF survey suggests that amount will increase to $142.31.

The roots of Valentine’s Day go deep into the past, to a pagan fertility festival and the martyrdom of a priest. Since medieval times, it has been a day to express and exchange tokens of love. So whether it is a simple card or a diamond ring, whether you spend a little, a lot, or nothing at all on Valentine’s Day, love is in the air; breathe it in!

Scripture reminds us that Jesus would often go to a deserted place in order to express the oneness of God: the perfect communion we had with the Father in the Spirit. His prayer was constant his will resolute and his life uncompromised. “...for I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of Him who sent me.” (JN 6:38) “...Servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them.” (JN 13:16). As disciples of Christ, we are invited into communion with God. We, too, are called to pray. We, too, are called to come to know the Lord as he reveals himself to us in Scripture, throughout history and in our lives.

The objection is raised, “But prayer takes time!”

end. Lives filled with busy-ness with no clear direction, afraid to ask the basic questions. Slow progress made at great price and over great spans of time. Sure, prayer takes time. In fact, it may take more time that most are ready to give. But it sure saves time. Imagine how much further we would be, both individually and collectively, if like Jesus we took the necessary time to pray.

Consider this passage from Mark’s Gospel: “In the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. And Simon and his companions hunted for him. When they found him, they said to him, “Everyone is searching for you.” He answered, “Let us go on to the neighbouring towns, so that I can proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do.” (MK 1:3538 NRSV). Imagine that! He had found fame, acceptance and a niche of his own, and yet is free to see beyond it – so that he might not lose track of the greater call. Rather than limiting himself to a safe haven, he reveals himself as light of the world and salt for the earth.

NATIONAL Five things to know about Canada’s flag on its 50th birthday

OTTAWA — Canada’s Maple Leaf flag turns 50 on Sunday. Five things to know about its history: The flag was conceived on Oct. 22, 1964.

Well, sort of. That’s the date the flag selection committee voted, unanimously choosing the Maple Leaf design as the new Canadian flag. The vote was sent on to Parliament and the flag was officially adopted on Feb. 15, 1965.

Its origins remain the subject of fierce debate. Some insist Dr. George Stanley, inspired by the commandant’s flag at Kingston’s Royal Military College, designed the flag; others say Brockville’s John Ross Matheson, a Liberal MP, is due most of the credit.

It was controversial from the outset. The Globe and Mail wrote of the new flag in an editorial in December 1964: ``Flags that have been torn in battle with a foreign enemy can still fly with pride.

This will surely be the first flag in history that was shredded by its sons.’’

John Diefenbaker was not a fan.

Diefenbaker, the Tory Opposition leader, fought bitterly against Lester Pearson’s plans to adopt a new flag, even losing a party member in the process. Leon Balcer, a

Entertainment Red Army movie provides glimpse behind hockey’s Iron Curtain Royal Theatre presents documentary for Sunday Cinema at 4:30 p.m.

THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - It doesn’t take long for audiences to figure out that “Red Army” is more than just a film about hockey.

Certainly, the documentary features plenty of footage of the Soviet Union’s renowned national team scoring incredible goals, undergoing rigorous training and being hailed as a symbol of strength.

But there’s also a glimpse into life behind the Iron Curtain, as experienced by men who are now key figures in present-day Russia.

“Sport is a creative expression and these guys really raised the bar,” filmmaker Gabe Polsky said. “Although it was one of the most oppressive systems, the hockey was the most free and that’s very paradoxical.”

An examination of the Soviet approach - tight collective work, the study of ballet movements, and many somersaults on the ice during practice - is among the highlights of the documentary, which explores the power of sport to affect politics.

The film is anchored by Viacheslav (Slava) Fetisov, a one-time captain of the Soviet hockey team and a hall of famer with two Olympic gold medals, several world championships and three Stanley Cups to his name.

Fetisov - who is now a politician in Russia - recalls being constantly watched by ominous state authorities until he eventually left the Soviet Union to play in the NHL. His stories are intermixed with interviews from

The differences between the Soviet team and the North American brand of hockey serve as a metaphor for the pitting of communism versus capitalism in the midst of the Cold War. “I wanted to go way beyond hockey on many other levels,” said Polsky. “On the geopolitical level, on what’s the meaning of sports to the Soviet Union, on the idea that they revolutionized sport and hockey and creativity.”

Polsky hopes his documentary might provide some context on the Russian way of thinking at a time when relations are once again tense with North America.

“What my film does is get at the history of who these people are, their soul. They grew up in the Soviet Union, they had these experiences and they’re running the country now,” he said.

Silverbacks sink Smoke Eaters in OT

The Trail Smoke Eaters battled back from a twogoal deficit in the third period, but could not complete the comeback as the Salmon Arm Silverbacks promptly won it 6-5 in overtime to take sole possession of third place in the BCHL’s Interior division playoff race.

In a wide open see-saw affair, Silverbacks forward Ross Heidt scored just four seconds into the extra frame to give Salmon Arm the victory, and a four-point cushion on West Kelowna for the final playoff spot in the tight Interior division.

With Trail’s top line of Craig Martin centering Jake Lucchini and Dallas Calvin on the ice to start the overtime, Smokie fans were hopeful that Trail might end it early. But it was not to be, as Salmon Arm’s Josh Blanshard pushed the puck past Martin, while Heidt separated from Lucchini, gathered the puck, then flew past the Trail defenceman and wired a wrist shot off the post and in, to abruptly end the match.

“It was pretty tough, just so quick off the draw, hard to react, a wobbly puck, not much you can do about that,” said Martin, Trail’s assistant captain. “It’s anyone’s game on 4-on-4 and we just didn’t get the outcome we wanted.”

“There is more positives than negatives, and that’s kind of been the story,” said Trail coach and GM Nick Deschenes. “It’s a bit of a roller coaster, up and down, we get behind, we comeback or vice versa. However, before the celebration had died down, Martin and Lucchini would get two wacks at a puck in front of ‘Backs goalie Angus Redmond before Calvin fired in the rebound to tie it at 1-1.

Todd would make an acrobatic pad save on a 2-on-0 midway through the period, but moments later Nick Hutchison would sneak one in short side on the Courtenay native to give Salmon Arm another short-lived lead; as less

than two minutes later, Lucchini would strike, taking a perfect pass from Calvin on the left side and ripping it top corner on Redmond to make it 2-2 at 12:56 of the first.

The trend would continue into the second period as Trail took a 3-2 lead when Dexter McLeod made a heads-up pass to a streaking Kienan Scott who walked in all alone and flipped a wrist shot over the blocker of Redmond four minutes in. Trail’s Minor Hockey Day kicks off

The Greater Trail Minor Hockey Association will celebrate Hockey Day in Canada on Saturday, along with the NHL and most other minor hockey associations in Canada this year.

As the birthplace of Minor Hockey Week, Trail traditionally celebrated the event on the third weekend in January, but certain factors led GTMHA to fall in line with the rest of the country this year.

“Minor Hockey Week is technically in January, but this didn’t work for us in terms of facilities and it’s so important to have the Nitehawks and Smoke Eaters games around and the weekend that it would

have been just didn’t fit for a lot of reasons,” said organizer Jim Maniago.

Despite the date change, Greater Trail arenas will be packed with minor hockey players, and games starting at 8 a.m. and going all day.

In lieu of the traditional pancake breakfast, GTMHA will be barbecuing a hot dog lunch for players and spectators in front of the Cominco Arena.

“We’ll have the hot dogs cooking right out in front, so hopefully the idea is that everyone is going to be grabbing a hot dog and going sitting down and watching. The more people around the better.”

Cominco Ice, while the Jr. and Sr. Novice will follow that up with their own jamboree where all teams will mix it up in some funfilled matches. Following the Atom Jamboree from 1-4 p.m. the Bantam Tier 2 Smoke Eaters will host the Nelson Tier 2 Leafs in Game 1 of their first-tofour-points playoff.

All minor hockey players will be allowed free entry to the Beaver Valley Nitehawks and Trail Smoke Eaters games on Friday and Saturday respectively, with the Beaver Valley Jr. Novice teams playing between periods at the Nitehawks game and the Trail Jr. Novice doing the same at the Smokies game.

While many minor

hockey associations have seen numbers drastically decline, Greater Trail minor hockey has enjoyed an up year for registration, particularly in the number of young players joining.

“Our Junior Novice, I don’t know when we’ve had this many kids in Junior Novice since I can remember,” said Maniago. “We did a big push and made some changes to encourage kids to join up and it increased our numbers this year, so I hope that’s a good sign.”

The Smokies would tie it a minute later. Martin carried it through the neutral zone, then hit Calvin skating in from the left side.

The lanky forward drew the defenceman then feathered a pass to Lucchini breaking in on the right, who faked, then toe dragged around Redmond, sliding it into the open net for his 29th goal of the season.

“It’s awesome, we played together before being all three local guys and developed some chemistry, and just over the last couple weeks it’s been nice,” said Martin. “We’re hot right now and hopefully we can keep going, and get the team some wins.”

In the past five games, Trail has two wins and two overtime losses, and the line has had much to do with the recent success, accounting for 29 points, with Calvin and Lucchini each with 11 points and Martin netting seven over that time.

“There is some serious skill in that room and some character for sure,” said Deschenes. “But you look at that game, and you go ‘Really, Salmon Arm is in the playoffs, and we’re 20 points back from them?’ – it doesn’t make any sense.”

A major overhaul to start the season and lengthy injuries to Martin, Calvin, Robbie Johnson, Todd, and defensive stalwart Bryan Gerstenfeld have hampered the win column this season.

Saints play final regular season home game CASTLEGAR – Though it’s a month away from the start of the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL) post season, the Selkirk College Saints had a taste of playoff hockey Friday night at the Castlegar Recreation Complex.

With time ticking down on the regular season, the two-time defending BCIHL champion Saints locked horns with the Simon Fraser University Clan in a key stretch drive contest before a raucous home crowd. Despite a valiant effort, the Saints were edged 2-1 in overtime.

“We’re in good shape

moving forward, despite the shootout loss,” said Saints head coach Alex Evin. “We have games in hand on both Simon Fraser and the University of Victoria as we all battle for the last home ice seed.

It was a playoff-like game against SFU and it was good for us to play at that intensity for 65 minutes.

This game will help us moving forward over the next month.”

The Saints final regular season home game is against Eastern Washington University tonight starting at 7 p.m. at the Castlegar Recreation Complex.

Couples on the same page for money and chores: poll The Canadian Press VANCOUVER — Western Canadians appear to be doing a good job connecting with their spouses or partners on issues such as chores around the house and financial decisions, and face arguments more frequently on intimacy and sports, a new Insights West poll had found.

The online survey of representative provincial samples asked British Columbians and Albertans who are currently in a

relationship several questions about their spouse or partner, including how they met and issues that may cause tension in their relationship.

Nine-in-ten Albertans (89 per cent) say they approve of the performance of their spouse or partner over the past year.

The proportion is slightly lower in British Columbia, where 84 per cent give a positive rating to their spouse or partner.

While there is no

gender gap when it comes to the way British Columbians feel about their current spouse or partner, men in Alberta demonstrate an extraordinary amount of admiration for their wives or partners (95 per cent), while the rating for men from women drops to 85 per cent.

A question related to moments when a person may not be on the same page as their spouse or partner shows that the least contentious issue is

deciding which restaurants to go to, with 86 per cent of British Columbians and 82 per cent of Albertans saying they are in agreement with their partner “all of the time” or “most of the time” on this.

Western Canadian couples also fare well on providing emotional support for each other (79 per cent in B.C., 84 per cent in Alberta), the amount of time spent together (76 per cent in B.C., 83 per cent in Alberta), money

B.C. residents more likely to mark Valentine’s Day More than three-in-five residents of the two Western Canadian provinces (61 per cent in B.C., 65 per cent in Alberta) deem Valentine’s Day “a waste of time and money”, and a minority (32 per cent in B.C., 27 per cent in Alberta) consider it “an important day.”

In the two provinces, 85 per cent of residents regard Valentine’s Day as “a commercial enterprise.” However, while 50 per cent of Albertans will not do anything special on Valentine’s Day, only 39 per cent of British Columbians will behave in the same fashion.

“As far as celebrations go, Valentine’s Day is not specially momentous for Western Canadians,” continues Canseco. “But British Columbians are more likely to do something, anything, to observe the day than Albertans.”

The favourite activities for those who will be celebrating Valentine’s Day are giving a greeting card to the spouse or partner (26 per cent in B.C., 20 per cent in Alberta), going out to dinner (23 per cent in B.C., 18 per cent in Alberta) and cooking a special meal at home (20 per cent in B.C., 17 per cent in Alberta).

and spending decisions (75 per cent in B.C., 76 per cent in Alberta), the quality of time spent with each other (72 per cent in B.C., 82 per cent in Alberta) and doing chores around the house (65 per cent in B.C., 70 per cent in Alberta).

There also is widespread agreement on which movies to watch (65 per cent in B.C., 65 per cent in Alberta), but Albertans are more likely to be on the same page with their partner when it comes to watching television at home (62 per cent in B.C., 71 per cent in Alberta) and setting the thermostat than British Columbians (65 per cent in B.C., 71 per cent in Alberta).

Among couples with children in both provinces, 82 per cent of spouses or partners are in agreement on child rearing “all of the time” or “most of

the time.”

Sports are a more controversial topic, with 59 per cent of Alberta and 51 per cent of B.C. sports fans saying they agree with their partner “all of the time” or “most of the time.”

About three-in-five residents of the two provinces say they are on the same page as their spouse or partner when it comes to politics (62 per cent in B.C., 60 per cent in Alberta) and religion (61 per cent in B.C., 62 per cent in Alberta).

Albertans are more likely to be on the same page as their spouse or partner on intimacy, in both frequency (53 per cent in B.C., 58 per cent in Alberta) and variety (58 per cent in B.C., 65 per cent in Alberta).

“Politics and religion are not particularly problematic within relationships in Western Canada,”

says Mario Canseco, Vice President, Public Affairs at Insights West.

“Most of the disagreements between spouses or partners that were reported in the survey have to do with intimacy and sports, whereas traditionally more complex issues—such as chores and money— are not creating much tension.”

An introduction by a friend is the most common way to meet a spouse or partner (32 per cent in B.C., 28 per cent in Alberta), followed by meeting a person at work (20 per cent in B.C., 22 per cent in Alberta) and meeting a person at school (11 per cent in B.C., 13 per cent in Alberta).

O n e - i n - t e n respondents in the two provinces (11 per cent in B.C., 9 per cent in Alberta) met their current spouse or partner through an online dating service.
