Better Internet service this month?

By Kathy O’Reilly-Taylor Editor Port McNeill – Like groundhog Wiarton Willie, the topic of Internet service on the North Island reared its head at the Town of Port McNeill council meeting Feb. 2.

Mayor Shirley Ackland told her fellow councillors that she had spoken to Ray Lawson from Telus earlier in the day and was told they have completed all the fibre optic installation to Port McNeill and within the next two weeks will be sending live signals.

“He is in charge of the project that is up here,” Ackland said.

As customers are migrated onto the system, the mayor was told “we will notice improved service.”

Skepticism remains though.

“Telus keeps telling us the same thing,” said Councillor Aaron Frost.

Frost said people are paying for high speed internet, and internet speeds they are receiving is akin to dial-up.

He encouraged as many people as possible to call customer service and voice their concerns.

“It shows genuine communitymindedness,” agreed Councillor Jay Dixon.

Ackland said Lawson is scheduled to be present at the Regional District of Mount Waddington meeting set for Feb. 17.

Local councils are not the only government voices calling for improved service.

Improvements in communications are vital for the economic and social health of our communities as well as for safety, says North Island MLA Claire Trevena.

She has written to request action on broadband internet, cell service and pagers.

“It’s 2015 and we are falling behind,” said

Trevena.

“I regularly hear about the lack of cell coverage on our major highways – 19 and 28 – and another accident highlighted how desperate that need is.

“And we know we are getting improved internet service to Port McNeill, but Port Hardy and Port Alice also need to have broadband. It allows access to education, to

healthcare, to economic opportunities.

“This is as important to communities as electrification once was. Our communities are no less deserving than the south island or lower mainland.”

There are still people on a waiting list to get on the internet, Trevena said.

Trevena is also raising, with both Telus and the government, concerns about the potential loss of pager service. In areas where there is no cell phone, pagers are the lifeline for emergency responders. She has offered to work with Telus and the Ministry to find solutions which would allow all North Island communities to be connected.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Gord Brownridge appeared before District of Port Hardy council Jan. 25 to present third quarter statistics for 2014.

According to the report, RCMP efforts to reduce the number of intoxicated people in public areas are working.

“We have now completed the third quarter for this fiscal year and the number of public intoxication files remains consistently lower than they were before this initiative began,” wrote Brownridge.

“The year to date number for 2014 is 247, down from 332 for the same time period in 2012.”

In the last quarter of 2014, Port Hard RCMP wrote a total of nine violation tickets for various Motor Vehicle Act violations. A total of 51 notice and orders/warnings were written and six impaired driving check stops were conducted.

Port Hardy RCMP conducted a total of eight impaired driving investigations that led to either provincial statute or Criminal Code charges.

They also conducted 16 motor vehicle accident investigations. Seven resulted in over $1,000 in damages, seven were under $1,000, and one was the result of impaired driving.

Internet frustration I was going to write my column this week on Internet in the Tri Port area.

However, I went online to do some research and my computer froze.

I have heard complaints about the slow and plodding Internet since I moved here — before I moved here, for that matter.

I have experienced it first hand since I arrived, both at work and at home.

I have to admit it has been frustrating.

Trying to Skype or Facetime family and loved ones, or even log onto Facebook to connect with people, is challenging on some days, impossible on others.

A friend here is studying on-line and often gets booted off halfway through a course and has to start all over again.

O’Reilly-Taylor It is inconceivable to me in this day and age that a group of people should be without reliable Internet access, or on a waiting list for Internet; when people in more populated areas have it.

In fact, it can be argued that people in more isolated areas need reliable service more than their counterparts in larger centres. They need it for access to information, medical services, and education, because some of these services are not close at hand. Businesses also need it to stay competitive in a world that relies more and more on marketing itself and its goods and services to a worldwide audience.

The Internet also plays a huge role in marketing what this area has to offer to tourists.

Internet access is a necessary tool to maintaining our connections to the rest of the world, while retaining our quality of life in rural communities.

Telus has promised Internet service will be much improved by the end of this month.

I, and many others are hopeful, but I gather this promise is something area residents have heard many times before.

People say they have been told for years that high speed Internet is coming, with the latest carrot of this month, being dangled before residents.

This isn’t the first time that a carrot has been dangled in front of the community.

It took over 100 years of lobbying to get a highway to the northern tip of Vancouver Island. It took the “Carrot Campaign” to make the government keep that promise.

Hopefully, we won’t have to erect a second carrot in Carrot Park in Port Hardy because it takes another hundred to get the information highway up here.

Relief coming for the rich

B.C. will likely be the only province in Canada to report a balanced budget for the current year and project surpluses for the next three years, Finance Minister Mike de Jong says.

Fall in love with music again Gazette Staff February 14 will be a great day for music lovers.

On that date, the North Island Concert Society presents 6 Guitars at the Port Hardy Civic Centre.

Originally formed by Gwen Doi, Malcolm Fleeton, Maureen Lee and Gretchen Frith, the North Island Concert Society is a non-profit society dedicated to presenting quality professional entertainment.

In the beginning, the District of Port Hardy provided a start-up grant. The Port Hardy Lions Club and the Port Hardy Rotary Club also gave a large amount of support to the Society.

6 Guitars is a blend of music, comedy, and characters. Chase Padgett becomes six different guitar players, each with their own distinct voice, views, and musical style (Blues, Jazz, Rock, Classical, Folk, and Country).

During this 85-minute show, each of the characters, ranging from a 19-year-

old rock prodigy to an 87-year-old blues man, shares their journey with music from discovery to mastery through songs and stories that leaves every audience laughing, crying, and falling in love with music all over again.

Padgett graduated from the University of Central Florida in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and has been a full time actor and musician ever since.

Art exchange a teaching tool

By Kathy O’Reilly-Taylor Editor Using art as a teaching tool to examine culture in other countries is the focus of a program on right now at Fort Rupert Elementary School.

The school is participating in an international art exchange through the One World Classrooms program.

One World Classrooms is a unique learning opportunity for students to experience art and culture from other students their age around the world.

“This is our third time doing the program,” said

Grade 6/7 teacher Marlei Boyko.

The school has put up a display of art it received from 15 different countries including the United States, Mexico, Paraguay, India, Thailand, Philippines, Armenia, Romania, Ukraine, Albania, China, and Macedonia.

“In turn, our school has sent out art (K-7) to be displayed in schools around the world,” Boyko said.

“Our school made artwork that reflected where we live and who we are,” she said.

Back-country dogs each with unique, quirky habits It’s been a few seasons now since I’ve had a dog on the trails with me. Every once in awhile, while naval gazing into a glass of merlot, I’ll think of those comedic, disciplined, heroic, and quirky attributes of man’s best friend. They were dogs that spent a good portion of their lives in the backcountry, well trained dogs that didn’t chase and stress wildlife and, in the case of bears, didn’t bring a angry bruin back to your location — aka doggy bear burger. Not too sure if man’s best friend would apply in that case.

There was one exception to the disciplined pups, a 24-pound sack of energy named Ranger. A beagle with small-man syndrome, he was always attempting to pick a fight with the biggest bear in the neighbourhood. There was nothing more outrageous than watching a 400-lb terrified bruin scamper up a tree with a white and reddish blur in hot pursuit.

No training stopped his habit of chasing bears; we always hoped one day that one of the big guys would put a bit of fear into Ranger to stop his errant ways, but it never happened. Along with his aggressive behaviour was his habit of rolling in bear

Before all the rest came Rembrandt, she was wilder than the wilderness, you couldn’t put a collar or leash on her, and she had the largest set of teeth I’ve ever seen in a dog.

These are the back country dogs, each with their unique personality and quirky behaviours, but all were valuable trail companions, each with their own rancid tail.

Victor’s Secret has grown from the brainchild of Flower Shoppe owner Lyn Skrlac, who has raised thousands of dollars to aid breast cancer research and treatment through a summer fund-raiser involving the creation and display of decorated and themed bras.

Following the second year of Bras for a Cause, Verbrugge stepped in with the help of her sister, Tammi Beek, and other volunteers to create the Victor’s Secret fashion show and pageant, which has utilized the same bras to raise thousands more for North Island victims.

Tickets for the show sold out in 7.5 hours.

Career Expo set for April 14 PORT HARDY— The North Island will once again play host to a Jobs and Career Expo on April 14, 2015 at the Port Hardy Arena and Civic Centre. These events are always highly successful at bringing together employers and prospective employees.

The last event held in 2012 saw more than 40 employer exhibitors. Angela Smith of the Port Hardy Chamber of Commerce says “This year’s event promises to be even bigger!”

A Steering Committee of School District #85, Community Futures Mt. Waddington, Regional District of Mt. Waddington, North Island College, North Island Employment Foundation, and the Chambers of Commerce of Port Hardy and Port McNeill has been formed to ensure the full participation of all our North Island communities, industries and employers.

A website, www.mwjobexpo.com, has been launched as a “one stop shop” for employer information, registration and sponsorship.

Starting in March the site will also be expanded to provide valuable information for participants planning to attend, including actual job openings on the North Island.

To show their support for this major event, employers are encouraged to go to the site and register early. Deadline for registration is March 20.

Councillor Jay Dixon revealed that plans are underway to build a climbing wall at North Island Secondary School.

“It’s an initiative that was brought forward to our PAC (Parent Advisory Committee) group by our outdoor education teacher Greg Muirhead,” said

“Our vision is to have a third of a wall with a professional climbing wall on it and adding to it in pieces.

“The addition of a climbing wall “aligns well with our new outdoor education programs that are

“It is exciting and our learners are really vibrant about it (the wall).”

Preliminary planning for the wall is

Last year, there were three athletes in the swimming program and they are expecting that number to increase to eight, said Volunteer Coordinator and acting Head Coach Courtney Cox. “It’s very exciting,” Cox said. “To be part of a team is a really powerful thing for these athletes.”

The local group is looking for volunteers to help with the swimming team, says Cox, adding volunteers don’t even have to get in the water.

This position requires a minimum of 10 hours a month dedicated to assisting the local programs, volunteers and athletes.

“One of the positions is local coordinator, which is one of our more import positions.”

The local coordinator “liaises with all the other positions to make sure things are running properly and appropriately.”

“I think there’s a lot of interest in it and our student population is very excited about it,” Dixon said.

“It’s a project that is very viable; and with community support it can be completed before the end of the school year,” he said.

Lake Cowichan looked like they were down for the count when Campbell River went ahead in the game 5-1, Heller said.

However, the team not only fought their way back to tie the game, but scored the go-ahead goal in the last minute for the victory.

Cowichan Valley (Duncan) came third in the tournament; Port McNeill finished fourth; and Port Hardy was fifth.

“Things went smoothly,” said Heller, offering his thanks to the volunteers who helped put on the event and to the teams who travelled to Port Hardy to participate.

While the weekend offered up some exciting hockey, Heller said the turn-out was a bit disappointing.

Typically local tournaments have eight teams participating.

This one ran with five.

“We’ve always run full. This is the first year that we’ve been short,” Heller said.

“It’s a changing demographic, I guess,” he said, adding that perhaps things like economics and distance are having an impact.

“We worry about it,” he said, because tournaments are an opportunity for Tri Port players to see competition from outside the area.

“They really look forward to it.”

On a positive note, the next big hockey event in Port Hardy will be a Midget tournament slated for Feb. 20 to Feb. 22.

Enthusiasts will be able to see 10 teams compete.

Speedway seeking scrap Gazette staff Members of Tri Port Speedway are currently seeking volunteers to help clean up and rebuild the race track.

As a fund-raiser, members are collecting scrap metal such as washing machines, lawnmowers, old dead cars, anything metal which will then be sold for cash.

Anyone who has an item they would like to donate can arrange to have a member or volunteer pick up items or they can be dropped off beside the old veterinary clinic buildings in the race track parking lot.

Tri-Port Speedway (also known as the “North Island Exhibition Grounds”) located 2 kilometres south of Port Hardy, is a 1/4 mile clay oval track.

McNeill flag to fly Gazette staff The Town of Port McNeill will be presenting a flag to participants of the Wounded Warrior Run. Port McNeill council was asked if they would like to donate a flag signed by council and staff and they were happy to oblige.

The Wounded Warrior Run, which raises awareness about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, kicks off at 6 a.m. on Feb. 15 in Carrot Park in Port Hardy. The flag will be presented at that time.

Day one will see the Run make its way from Port Hardy, to Port McNeill and then to Rooney Lake.

The event ends six days later in Victoria.

Nailbiter nets Peewees top spot

By Kathy O’Reilly-Taylor Editor PORT HARDY—With just 9.5 seconds left on the clock, the North Island Eagles Peewee team clinched top spot when they tied the Cowichan Valley Capitals 4-4 at home Saturday.

The Capitals drew first blood in the game scoring two goals, in quick succession to take a 2-0 lead in the game.

Rhys Dutcyvich, assisted by Luke Gage, put one in the net with 5:35 left in the first to bring his team within one. Dutcyvich and Gage paired up again to tie the game with help from Mathew Saunders.

The Capitals came out on a mission after the second-period break and scored a quick goal to go ahead 3-2.

The Eagles refused to give up and tied the game up 3-3 when Dutcyvich got the hat trick, once again with the assist going to Gage.

The Capitals went ahead 4-3 at the 12:07 mark of the third period.

The Eagles just about stood on their head trying to get the tying goal, but were repeatedly denied.

With under a minute left on the clock, the Eagles pulled their goaltender. The Eagles capitalized on having an extra attacker and Saunders put the tying goal in the net with the assists going to Dutcyvich and Gage.

The tie means the Eagles have clinched top spot in the North Division of tier 3, said Coach Andrew Laming.

“They came out and they battled all game long,” said Laming.

The Eagles amassed three wins and a tie in playoffs.

“They’ve been improving all year long,” Laming said.

As for the Capitals, “they came out hard. They wanted to beat us.”

Which team the Eagles take on next was not known at press time.

Midgets set sights on Tier 3 semis

By Kathy O’Reilly-Taylor Editor The North Island Eagles Midget squad had their wings clipped by the Port Alberni Bulldogs in play-off action Saturday.

The teams started out evenly matched.

A solid effort by both squads saw the score tied 1-1 going into the second period break.

The Bulldogs came back with a vengeance scoring five unanswered goals, before a switch in goaltender. The Eagles settled back down and held the Bulldogs to just two more goals in the

third. They final score was 8-1.

“We played great in the first period,” said Coach Aaron Hinton.

“Just three minutes after the break killed us,” Hinton said.

The Honour Your Health Challenge may be just the kickstart you need.

The Challenge begins Feb. 17 at 4:30 p.m. at Port Hardy Secondary School.

“This will be the third year that we’ve done it,” said Stephanie Nelson, Port Hardy Secondary School connections worker.

The 13-week program brings together staff, parents, students and community members twice a week for a 40- to 60-minute light warm-up and jog routine “developed by doctors from

SportMedBC. SportMedBC is a professional not-forprofit society comprised of close to 600 sport medical and paramedical practitioners in British Columbia. It promotes leadership, public awareness and education in the areas of sport medicine, sport science and sport training.

“It’s a fabulous program, tried and true,” said Nelson of the Honour Your Health Challenge.

Over 200,000 Aboriginal people across British Columbia take part in the event each year, “but it’s not just Aboriginal focused.”

The number of people who take part in the program varies from year to year and

because of conflicting schedules some do the program on their own.

At the end of the 13 weeks, participants will be ready to do a 5-kilometre or 10-kilometre walk-jog through Port Hardy. A dinner is also be held to celebrate the participants’ successes.

Last year about 100 people attended the final event ranging in age from four to 70.

“There are a lot of incentives involved,” she said.

Economic plan complete J.R. Rardon Gazette staff PORT McNEILL—Almost a year after launching to great fanfare a $50,000 consulting process for the development of a community economic plan, the Town’s councillors were somewhat more quiet in their first meeting with the completed document in their possession.

The 48-page Port McNeill 2020: Our Economic Development Plan was completed by the Zethof Consulting Group and delivered to council this month. With the 48-page plan on the agenda of its Jan. 19 meeting, though, council voted to table discussion or action on its objectives and recommendations until members had a chance to review the information further.

All four councillors — Jay Dixon, Shelley Downey, Aaron Frost and Graham MacDonald — were elected in November, after the consultation process was completed. None was in office when the process was undertaken early in 2014.

“I’d like to make a motion we have a special meeting or meeting of the committee of the whole to go through this,” Coun. Downey said.

“There’s a lot here and I don’t know if we have time to go through it all in a public meeting.”

Council agreed, but that the wrong chord with several members of a sizable gallery, who spoke up during the public comment period at the end of the meeting.

“Which is it, a committee of the whole, or a special meeting?” former councillor Gaby Wickstrom asked. “Is this going to be a public meeting?”

Waddington noted the multiple public events held to promote the development of the plan and gather input throughout 2014.

“I think there should be another meeting to discuss this info, like the meetings you had when you asked the public for their input,” Mitchell said. “I think the public would like full-circle closure on this.”

Council agreed its work with the economic plan would be made public, and that the document would be available for viewing through the Town of Port McNeill website.

“I think that’s a great idea for a public meeting to share the goals and objectives of the plan,” Mayor Shirley Ackland said.

Port McNeill 2020 identifies three primary goals — a diversified and strong economy, an attractive and sought-after community, and engaged youth — and lists a series of objectives to achieve those goals. Recommended strategies and actions cover short-, medium- and long-term time frames. The plan also notes the limitations faced, including a small population base and major industry stakeholders located outside the Town’s boundaries.

While no extended discussion was held during the January meeting, Coun. Dixon noted with approval the Town seemed already to be involved in some of the plan’s short-term actions.

Coun. MacDonald’s initial review of the economic plan was also favourable, particularly the action items.

“We paid for this, right?” MacDonald asked.

“This is a good stepping-stone. We need to move on this.”
