Trek to the top of the world

J

ust like research papers, all great mountaineering adventures start on Wikipedia.

“I saw that Chimbarazo is the highest point on planet earth and that intrigued me,” said Stephen McOrmond. “I wanted to stand on the highest point on the planet, basically the closest to space I could possibly be while still standing on planet earth.”

With that, plans for a trek in Ecuador began to form.

Mountains intrigue McOrmond so much that they spurred him to move all the way to Port Alberni from Toronto in July 2013.

“I came here for a day and decided to stay,” said McOrmond, a denturist who followed both his passions to the west coast.

By day, he sculpts dentures as the city’s only denturist.

“Dentures are an art form to me,” he said. “You start with a blank canvas and you create a smile.”

On his off time, he’s adventuring whether here in the Alberni Valley or much further afield.

“Those are my two passions, dentures and adventures.”

The trip to Ecuador has been a goal of McOrmond’s for a few years now but the idea really started to coalesce six to eight months ago.

While he booked his tickets and picked up a book on Ecuadorian mountains, he kept the trip loosely planned.

“I winged it, to be honest. The logistics of it, where I was going to stay, what was going to happen; I totally winged it.”

He first flew into Quito,

the sprawling capital city of Ecuador. At an elevation of 2,800 metres, it was already higher than back home.

“There’s a hill in the middle of town with a giant statue that’s the virgin mother made of aluminum, it’s huge,” he said, adding that even climbing that 200-metre hill to the monument proved to be a bit of a challenge.

“You could feel the difference in elevation.”

As part of his acclimatization he climbed a variety of mountains, starting with Rucu Pichincha at the top of the nearby TeleferiQo, an

“That’s when I discovered altitude is a real thing. My heart was just palpitating like crazy.

Even at a standstill it was beating fast, it was difficult to breathe.”

Even though the mountain was 4600 metres high and his climb itself was only 800 metres, his hands started turning

After five days of climbing mountains and exploring in and around Quito, he ventured further at lower altitudes.

“I went to the actual equator itself with a friend I had met from Argentina.”

He also paid a visit to Otavalo, which houses the largest outdoor market in South America—a large tourist draw—before heading off to Baños, the outdoor capital of Ecuador for some bungee jumping.

“It’s the sketchiest... you’re on this bridge, probably about a hundred metres up over a river,” McOrmond said.

“I don’t even know if you could call it bungee jumping because it’s not a bungee, it’s just a rope and then you hit the end of the rope violently and spiral all over the place and then it turns into a swing.”

Though the three people in front of him wouldn’t jump, for McOrmond “it was sketchy enough to get me that adrenaline rush I wanted.”

His adrenaline rush didn’t end there.

“I did five or so kilometres of zip lines, I did pretty much every zip line the town has to offer, over waterfalls, over rivers, though forests.”

shooting over waterfalls, he went under them via the Ruta de Las Cascadas.

“One of the main things I had planned while I was there was riding down the highway of waterfalls and it turned out to be really cool. You rent an awesome mountain bike for $5 and then you just go on this multiple kilometre trip, down through little towns, waterfall after waterfall.

Some of them were two waterfalls that converge and fall together.”

Ecuador’s customs turned out to be just as amazing as the scenery.

While McOrmond was in Banos for New Year’s, he got to see a local tradition.

“They take these life-size mannequins, these paper mache dolls of politicians, superheroes, anything you can imagine they’d make out of paper mache.”

On New Year’s, they pile them up and then the show begins.

“All of the teenage guys and younger boys dress up in drag and stop traffic and beg for money, and they dance to music.

It’s just a massive dance party, it was really cool.”

After the party, it was back to the forest for McOrmond. With a few friends he met along the way, he went to a tiny town right on the edge of the Amazon rain forest, where locals took them deep into the jungle, both by land and by river.

“They took us to this animal refuge where they had ocelots, toucans, tons of spider monkeys that were just roaming free so they’d come right up to you.

“I wanted to hug one but they’re pretty vicious, they have big teeth. It didn’t seem like a good idea.”

Pretty much everything in the jungle ended up being deadly.

“We want to address excess capacity but I don’t think we simply want to eliminate it because there is an advantage to having a bit more room,” Smyth said, adding that the choice to be made was how much excess capacity was worth the price of maintaining it.

Smyth also said without going into much detail that busing children a little further to Neill and Dunn would not be an excessive expense.

The elementary schools in question also share catchment areas with the middle schools, so any transition would not be huge for the students.

Smyth emphasized that even though he is suggesting closing Gill and Eighth Avenue, it is the trustees who will make the final decision following consultations with teachers, parents and the general public.

According to Smyth, Gill has “had a significant enrolment decline” while Eighth Avenue is limited by its smaller capacity and thus doesn’t make sense to keep—even if the trend of declining enrolment in SD70 reverses itself.

The district’s middle schools would stay open and convert to K-7 to accommodate students from the schools Smyth is proposing to close.

Students from Gill Elementary would move to A.W. Neill’s facility and those at Eighth Avenue Elementary would use E.J. Dunn.

According to Smyth, closing the elementary schools and converting the middle schools makes sense because the middle schools are bigger.

Although excess capacity—and the cost to maintain those facilities—is an issue in the school district, Smyth cautioned against cutting capacity down to exactly what’s needed

City moves forward with new sewage lagoon SEWAGE UPGRADES: | The city hopes to have environmental approval for the effluent discharge pipe for its new lagoon in 2015.

Port Alberni’s new sewage lagoon is getting closer to being operational.

The city purchased the lagoon from Catalyst Paper in 2012 for $5.75 million—taken from borrowing— because its existing lagoon had reached capacity. The 13.4 hectare facility also came with 3.9 hectares of land that included space for an industrial road.

The city’s wastewater advisory committee met with representatives from the Ministry of Environment and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in mid-January to discuss a key part of stage two of the Liquid Waste Management Plan.

In order to fall under provincial regulations for wastewater management, municipalities must ensure that their sewage treatment systems have a

suitable effluent discharge pipe.

“After treatment, we discharge [treated wastewater] into the inlet,” said city engineer Guy Cicon, who sits on the wastewater advisory committee.

“Right now, the lagoon has just a little side discharge.”

The new municipal wastewater regulation requires a designed discharge that ensures suitable dilution and disinfection of the discharged

wastewater. The city, like many other municipalities, aerates its wastewater.

“We presented an option that is the most sensitive for the salmon,” said Cicon, adding that the city has always pushed for

“recognition that the salmon is the most valuable resource

that we have in the (Alberni) Inlet.”

Due to that focus, Cicon said that the option that the city came up with “conflicts with the MoE’s regulation on the discharge depth.”

The MoE regulations require the discharge depth to be 10 metres below the surface.

While the precise location for the discharge pipe has yet to be determined, studies conducted by DFO and the city show that the ideal depth to affect the salmon fishery the least is shallower than the MoE regulation depth.

Although the city doesn’t have the go-ahead for the shallower depth, Cicon said they have MoE’s “appreciation of the evaluation of all of our options.”

Going beyond the salmon, having properly treated

and discharged wastewater is especially important given the location of the new sewage lagoon just south of the city’s existing sewage lagoon within the Somass Estuary, a biologically sensitive location.

“This is one of the most biodiverse estuaries on the continent,” said Cicon.

While neither the old nor new sewage lagoon are ideally placed, they’ve been there for close to half a century and it made more financial sense to purchase the old Catalyst lagoon than to build a new facility in a different location.

Purchasing the old lagoon also meant the city could take advantage of an $11.2M federal grant to upgrade both its existing lagoon the former Catalyst one.

“It was playful, like a little dog. It got within six feet of me and bounced around me as I was walking. It was adorable, I walked with a fox.”

After Rumiñahui, it was onto the big one: Chimbarazo.

Unfortunately, conditions there hampered McOrmond’s efforts.

“December and January are some of the better times to go but they’re still tough mountains to climb.”

Poor conditions and blizzards stopped him short of his original goal to ascend to the peak at approximately 6,268 m.

Once the design is agreed upon, the city will move onto “the more detailed design of the improvements to the [former] Catalyst lagoon.”

While he didn’t get as close to the stars as he wanted, he did

come home with a souvenir.

“Every mountain that I ever climb, I grab a rock. A rock that either resembles the mountain or just looks cool.”

Though he’s been back for less than a month, McOrmond’s ready for more trekking. Perhaps Antarctica, or back to South America.

But for now, he’s sticking close to home.

McOrmond escaped the jungle and headed back into the mountains.

He climbed Illineza Nort and Illineza Sur, where a mountain refuge at 4700 metres was the true test of whether he could handle Chimbarozo.

“That’s the true test of if you’re acclimatized enough to sleep at height.

You’re supposed to hike high and sleep low but I wanted to hike up there and sleep up there and let my body acclimatize.”

Illineza Sur was topped by a big glacier but Illineza Nort was the perfect mountain for McOrmond to climb.

“I didn’t have ropes or anything so it was easier to do solo.”

A couple of mountains and the world’s highest active volcano later (Cotopaxi Volcano, 5897 metres), not having ropes gave McOrmond a scare bigger than any jungle animal.

Sports tourism overlooked Post-secondary ‘re-engineering’ begins Tourism—and what, if anything, we should do with it in Port Alberni—is always a hot button issue in our city, especially around budget time. Many people have opinions about tourism being our city’s saviour; not being enough to save this town; well served through various interest groups; neglected by municipal leaders.

Whenever tourism is on the conversation menu, McLean Mill or the steam train are sure to be an appetizer, if not the main course.

One area that people seldom bring up is that of sports tourism (unless they’re complaining about having to pay tax on the AV Multiplex when ‘we don’t play hockey’).

We suggest people take a pause and look at several big sporting events happening in the next two weeks: three high school basketball tournaments, including a senior girls’ Island championship; the 62nd annual men’s curling bonspiel; and the Tim Hortons Senior Men’s and Women’s provincial curling championships.

How many hotel rooms and restaurant or catered meals, facility rentals, souvenir sales do you think these events represent? How many dollars do these visitors—from high school athletes with parents to adults visiting from in and around the province to curl—spend in our community?

How much attention do we really pay them while they are spending their time and money in our community? What are we doing to welcome them?

Certainly food for thought.

ICTORIA – Premier Christy Clark’s push to “re-engineer” the B.C. education system is moving ahead aggressively in B.C.’s 25 post-secondary institutions.

One of the first tasks for Andrew Wilkinson in his new role as advanced education minister was to outline the shift in operating grants for colleges and universities to in-demand occupations.

By 2017, a quarter of the money for post-secondary institutions will be directed to areas where labour force surveys forecast a need.

This was greeted with some alarm when it was announced last year.

Simon Fraser University president Andrew Petter at first downplayed the coming skills shortage as “relatively small” and warned against pushing post-secondary

institutions into a “zero sum battle for dollars.”

Petter has since come on board, as his approving comments were featured in the ministry’s Jan. 26 news release detailing the shift.

He and others have been assured that in spite of Clark’s rhetoric, suggesting trades training is in and university is out, the news for SFU and other universities isn’t all that bleak.

Wilkinson is completing a provincewide tour of all postsecondary institutions this week, and I reached him at his visit to Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops.

“The response to this has generally been pretty good, because the students are putting this pressure on institutions themselves,” he said.

“Some of the institutions are … shrinking things like teacher education

and putting more effort into the science-based, quantitative fields that are often related to these in-demand occupations.”

The surplus of teacher graduates has been noticeable for some time, but that’s largely a function of oversupply, much of it in urban areas.

In the Cariboo, for example, teaching jobs are projected to have the highest number of openings by 2022, followed by nursing and retail and wholesale trade managers.

Then come heavy duty mechanics and electricians, but also paraprofessional jobs in legal, social, community and educational services.

Province-wide, it’s part of a broader demographic shift to fewer children and more retirees.

In fact the government started this targeted funding a decade ago with health care, forcing

universities to produce more doctors, nurses, lab techs and so forth.

The retiring baby boom is expected to account for more than half of the openings in the next decade, which will expand the skills demand across most fields, beyond the trades training for the anticipated liquefied natural gas industry and other high-demand industrial areas such as truck driving.

Wilkinson notes that of the ministry’s $1.9 billion budget, about 60 per cent goes into general postsecondary education, for introductory courses that students take when they are seeking a career path, through undergraduate studies to professions.

“So I think the idea that we’re going to somehow minimize or diminish funding in that general education, arts and science category is just not true,” he said. Key to this shift is measuring the performance of courses offered at colleges, universities and technical schools.

The results are available on a website that breaks them out by institution and general study area.

To find it, do a web search for “BC student outcomes” and select the “executive dashboard” to check the results for courses and schools in your region.

It’s Saturday on Stirling Arm Crescent. The rain has temporarily stopped, the wind has dropped, the hydro electricity is back on and I am full of gratitude.

A tree had been blown down across our steep and lengthy driveway. Not being a young guy, in good physical health, I took my rusty dull hand saw and headed down the laneway.

Lo and behold: a miracle! Some kind hearted individual had finished falling the tree, trimmed the branches and moved the tree trunk to the side of the driveway permitting us access to the main road.

All this had been done without our knowledge.

So from this old guy to the good Samaritan: “thank you so very much”.

The kiteboarders are to be banned from Centennial Pier?

Well, we do have a working harbour and I completely agree that

the pier is too close to the working boats.

Canal beach is the perfect location for this activity. I can appreciate that the port authority has to exercise restraint in this time of change, but could the watersport groups get together to earn the money to rebuild the pier at Canal Beach instead of the port paying alone to develop the beach?

I would love to see service groups join in to make a playground,

shelter and benches for the community and tourists to enjoy.

This gem could be a huge boon to the tourism industry and the community.

Many Canadians fear our government’s over-reaching surveillance policies may result in loss of civil liberties; as far as governments go, nothing much seems to have changed in two millennia, does it?

When Canada’s AntiTerrorism Act, Bill C-51, was announced last week, the prime minister’s rhetoric about “a great evil has been descending over our world” sounded eerily similar to George W. Bush’s “Axis Of Evil”. And who can forget the U.S. president’s illchosen words of 13 years ago: “Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists”.

Those politics of fear got George W. Bush elected for a second term, and with an election looming in Ottawa this year, we have to wonder if that playbook is being repeated by the Harper government.

One thing has changed: Syria is no longer an ally willing to torture the West’s prisoners; they have their hands full torturing their own.

Edwards emphasized the benefits of partnering with Steelhead LNG. “We found there was a good fit...

[Steelhead] bring a full set of experience throughout the value chain... and they come a with a real partnership attitude,” Edwards said, adding that the Huu-ayaht see that as an enormous positive.

Steelhead LNG is also B.C.-based, something that Edwards said “provides both corporate and provincial alignment.”

Edwards also spoke about the jobs— mainly professional, skilled and semiskilled—that the

facility would create, both during construction and afterwards.

“As a mega-capital project it’s estimated that 3000-4000 construction jobs would be employed in the creation of the facility.”

There will also be indirect jobs created due to the project.

“One of the best analogies that we have in terms of indirect jobs is that if you have 4,000 workers, every morning they get up and every worker has two eggs for breakfast.

That’s 2,000 eggs everyday. Where do you get the eggs and how do they get to site?

“Now you’ve got a

farm and you’ve got trucks and you begin to see some of the related businesses that go into this size of an operation.”

Answering a query from Mayor Mike Ruttan as to what could be done to prepare people here to take fill those positions, Edwards said that they were “in the process of developing a memorandum of understanding with North Island College to increase the number of trade seats available here.”

He acknowledged that while the project will likely need workers from all over B.C., they’re committed to making

sure as many of the jobs as possible go to locals.

Edwards also reassured directors that after the site was decommissioned it would be returned to a greenfield as a minimum standard.

The Steelhead LNG lease of the land is currently for 25 years, although Edwards said that the LNG facility could operate for longer.

The final investment decision for the proposed LNG facility will happen in 2018.

“We’re underfunding pretty much everything.” With that comment, Port Alberni engineer Guy Cicon wrapped up his budget presentation in front of city council last week. It was the first shot for city departments to present their budgets for the city’s 2015–19 draft financial plan.

Engineering and public works

represents onequarter of the city’s total budget. They are responsible for roads and water, sewage and garbage, and also look after the city’s cemetery.

Some of the projects engineering will work on this year include completing the Gertrude Street road bridge expansion, the Dry Creek flood mitigation plan, paving the worst parts of city streets, replacing aging

water pipes and separating storm and sewer drains—an ongoing requirement by the provincial government, Cicon explained.

The department’s proposed capital budget comes to $2.7 million.

While the city maintains 150 kilometres of road, workers are only able to replace about 1.6 kms per year, at a cost of $500,000—and that’s a bargain, Cicon

said, because they are using a less expensive replacement method.

While Cicon was the first presenter, he wasn’t the only one laying out his budget for city councillors.

Johann Van Schaik, the senior regional transit manager for BC Transit, presented the transit budget (53.3 per cent for which the city is responsible).

Inspector Mac Richards presented the RCMP’s budget.

City ponders transparency from in-camera meetings

The public might soon be able to find out what happens at in-camera city

council meetings if city council votes to approve it.

Following a council directive at the Jan. 12 meeting for a change to the procedures

bylaw to incorporate a process for the release of in-camera resolutions, staff drew up a report detailing how in-camera information could be

released.

If passed, the council procedures bylaw no. 4860 would allow for portions of the in-camera meetings and the

information provided for them to be released to the public following a majority vote by council.

While drawing up the report, city

staff also took the opportunity to recommend a change to the order of council procedures and business.

“Sometimes our

meetings do extend fairly late, beyond 10 p.m. and some of the more substantive issues are currently discussed later in the agenda, [such as] bylaws and reports,” said city clerk Davina Hartwell.

Our beloved husband, father, grandpa and friend passed away on Feb. 5, 2015.

He was born on January 26, 1945 in Broek-Op-LangeDyk, Holland, moving to Canada with his family in 1954.

In 1967 he married Susan Morris and together they had three children.

Simon was a great Ă€xer, a mechanic by trade. He loved people and met many of them at workplaces through the years at Plywood, Franklin and the City of Port Alberni. He loved boating with his family, Ă€shing, car shows and travelling with Sue. His family and friends would recognize Simons unique exclamation, “Geez....hey.â€?

He will be greatly missed. He is survived by wife Susan, his sons Ted (Rya), Michael and Dennis (Leah), grandchildren Hayley, Adisyn and Cruz, and by brothers: Bill (Mary), Neil, sisters Margaret Stephanson (Butch), Greta Heinen (Henry) and many nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by brothers Jake and Peter.

A memorial tea will be held at the Cherry Creek community hall on Friday February 13, 1:00 - 3:30.

In lieu of Ă owers, donations may be made to your favourite charity.

The best senior curlers in the province are headed to the Alberni Valley for the Tim Hortons Seniors Curling Championships from Feb. 16-21.

The top eight men’s and top eight women’s

seniors (50 and over) teams will compete for spots in the Canadian senior championships in Edmonton in March.

“We’ve got a few highend curlers coming here,” said Michelle Twanow, who is organizing the event for the Alberni Valley Curling Club.

Two men’s and two women’s teams are from Vancouver Island, including Lynn Noble from Qualicum Beach and Heather Lindsay from Nanaimo, Wes Craig from Victoria Curling Club and Dean Thulin from Campbell River.

Other women’s rinks

are Kathy Smiley, Lynda Roemer and Marilou Richter from the Lower Mainland, Lori Freeman from the Kootenays, Lil Blashko and Sandra Jenkins from the Okanagan.

The Nanaimo Hornets may have scored the first and last tries of their B.C. Rugby Union Div. 1 men’s rugby game on Saturday, but the Port Alberni Black Sheep scored the ones that counted, winning 31-24 on home turf.

Nanaimo opened scoring early in the contest, going up 5-0 on an unconverted try. Port Alberni got it back when Anthony Selva scored, and went up 7-5 after Neil Thurley kicked a conversion. Nanaimo swapped the lead again with a second try, going up 12-7.

“We had some really sloppy moments,” Black Sheep head coach Jas Purewal said. “We started playing some pretty good rugby 25 minutes into the first half.”

Ty Shannon, with a Thurley conversion, gave the Black Sheep a 14-12, two-point edge at halftime.

“Our scrums were pretty weak but they got better as the day went on,” Purewal said. “Our lineouts

were improved from last week.”

Jack Rokotuiwakaya widened the gap for the Black Sheep with a try, converted by Thurley, after a push inside the Hornets’ five-yard-line.

With the Sheep putting pressure on the Hornets’ twoyard-line, Mike Nelson pushed the goal line with some pick and go rugby and it translated into a try to put the Sheep up 26-12.

Men’s spiel kicks off The Alberni Valley Curling Club hosts their 62nd annual men’s bonspiel, sponsored by Quality Foods, from Feb. 13–15.

There will be 32 teams participating in the event, with curlers coming from as far away as Cold Lake, Alta. This year the men will be honouring Billy McNeill from the Marpole Curling Club, in Vancouver.

This is Billy’s 50th consecutive year attending the Port Alberni Men’s Bonspiel.

Other highlights include a silent auction table to support the 2015 Tim Horton’s BC Senior Curling Championship which takes place Feb. 16–21.

The men’s bonspiel begins Friday, Feb. 13 at 2 p.m. and will wrap up with event finals on Sunday afternoon.

Alberni District Secondary School is a hotbed of basketball this month.

The junior boys’ basketball zone playdowns concluded on Feb. 7, and the junior girls basketball North Islands are slated for ADSS this Friday, Feb. 13 and Saturday, Feb. 14.

The senior boys’ basketball North Islands are scheduled for the Alberni Athletic Hall Feb1920–

21 and the senior girls’ AAA Island championships take place Thursday, Feb. 19 through Saturday, Feb. 21.

“It’s crazy busy,” said Mike Roberts, athletic director at the high school.

The school is gearing up for the junior girls North Islands this weekend.

The Armada junior boys finished fourth in the zone playdowns, and faced Ladysmith in a challenge game Tuesday night to decide who will go on

to the North Island championships. No score was available before the News went to press.

From Thursday, Feb. 19 to Saturday, Feb. 21, the school will host both the senior boys’ AAAA North Island championships and the senior girls’ AAA Island championships concurrently. The boys were originally going to be at the Alberni Athletic Hall but some booking confusion have them juggling gymnasiums

at ADSS, Roberts said.

There will only be four boys’ teams and they will be able to run their final on Saturday afternoon, while the senior girls’ teams take a break to hold their annual general meeting. The girls will wrap up their finals Saturday evening.

“Several players have gone to Olympic trials, which is quite a feat. Not just anybody can go there.

When they were playing in ladies’ or men’s before seniors, there are some previous world champions.”

Port Alberni has hosted provincial championships

before, but in this case Curl BC came to them, Twanow said.

“They’re finding it hard to get clubs for the seniors events.

They have no problem with the ladies’ and men’s events because they’re televised.

They’re having trouble finding clubs to put (others) on because it’s quite a production.”

Hosting a provincial championship is not a money maker for

the curling club, she added.

Monday, Feb. 16 is a practice day for teams; opening ceremonies on Tuesday are at 5:45 p.m., and will include bagpipes and RCMP members in their red serge.

Games continue all week, with the semi-finals and finals wrapping up on Saturday, Feb. 21.

The public is welcome to come

Portal Players have been working on Seussical since last fall and all the cast’s hard work is about to come to fruition. Opening night is Friday, Feb. 13 and the play runs Fridays and Saturdays till March 7, with Sunday matinees Feb. 28 and March 1. Jazz lovers in Port Alberni will have an opportunity to hear one of Vancouver Island’s finest music ensembles in concert when the Arrowsmith Big Band from Oceanside plays as the special guest at the annual ADSS Jazz Night on Thursday, Feb 12. Cody Johannessen has been playing live music for two years now but solo shows still make the 20-yearold musician a little nervous.

“Everything’s focused on you, there’s no security blanket so you’re kinda exposing yourself,” he said.

The Parksville native removes the security blanket with an appearance this Sunday, Feb. 15 at Char’s Landing in Port Alberni.

Johannessen first picked up a guitar six or seven years ago when his dad bought his stepbrother a guitar. Ironically, Johannessen now plays professionally but his stepbrother doesn’t.

Born to a partially British family—his father’s side—

Johannessen loves the culture there and would love to play in the United Kingdom someday. He also takes inspiration from British artists.

He describes his sound as a “mix of Ed Sheeran meets Oasis,” with a bit of Passenger thrown in.

His sound is still developing and he’s thinking about “adding a bit more pop stuff” to the mix.

Johannessen is thinking of working on some songs over the next couple of months and putting out an EP “possibly in June.”

He’s a solo act these days, playing under the name ‘Cody to the Moon’, but wouldn’t say no to performing with a band one day.

“Over time, I think yes,” he said, “but I don’t know the future.”
