In a competition that set 11 of the country’s best chefs against one another, Edmontonian Ryan O’Flynn came out the official champ.

The chef, who in the past has cooked for Queen Elizabeth and the members of U2, took the gold medal after the final dish was served at the Canadian Culinary Championship last Saturday night in front of a crowd 600-people strong, adding another feather to his already well-decorated chef’s cap.

But the Gold Medal Plates event had a few more winners worth mentioning.

Burgeoning chefs from Okanagan College’s culinary program, Canadian food culture and, perhaps most of all, the city itself were big winners.

Touring through any of the challenges that took place over the weekend and speaking with attendees quickly clarified any questions about the benefit of this competition to Kelowna.

Foodies hailing from one side of Canada to the other, made the journey to the Okanagan to get a chance to hobnob with the nation’s best chefs.

Gisele, Nanette, Suki and Nicole Haché were among those on the foodie pilgrimage. The sisters—the first two from St. John’s Newfoundland, then from Vancouver and Montreal respectively— make it a priority to meet once a year for some bonding.

This year Nanette suggested coming to the Gold Medal Plates, and they all jumped at the chance. And, as meals were dished out and wine was poured, all said they’d do it again.

Chef Renee Lavalee, from the Canteen in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, was the only female competitor.

“I think it’s amazing,” said Nicole. “I’m blown away by how well organized it is. I had no idea what we’d be getting…I really enjoy going to great restaurants and now I’m getting to meet the best chefs in Canada. It’s exciting.”

Gisele chimed in that her sister “was

almost giddy” about the opportunity.

“It’s true,” Nicole admitted, pointing out that her hometown representative cooks for stars the likes of Katy Perry when they go to Montreal, and now she was getting a chance to speak with him.

All four of the sisters

said they would be making return trip to the valley, to further soak in its food and wine culture.

“It’s beautiful here… with the mountains and the lakes, I’ll definitely coming back,” said Nanette.

As an aside, all the sisters had Edmonton in their list of top two best

chefs for that night’s dish.

At a table across the room during the Saturday finale, Regina residents Sarah Fedorchuk and Hanna Ly—along with their husbands—were also reveling in all there was on offer.

“It’s fantastic— so much fun,” said Fedorchuk, noting they’d

likely return to the Okanagan at a later date.

While the tourism draw of Gold Plates could have multiplying effects, the appeal of the competition also reflects the rise of food culture in this country.

Chef Luc Jean, of Jane’s Restaurant in Winnipeg, pointed out that can be

chocked up to TV. “Ever since the Food Network came out, people have become way more knowledgeable and there’s way more foodies than ever before,” he said, after his turn in the kitchen for the Black Box competition.

“Fifteen to 20 years ago, you had a hard time finding olive oil on cooking shelves. Now people know about different foods, they know about different styles.”

It’s meant that chefs have had to tap into a deeper knowledge base as well.

Jean said cooks have to know how to make a Thai curry, know what an Indian curry is, not to mention being able to identify South East Asian and French flavours.

“Cooking has really become global,” he said.

It’s still, however, a tough industry to make a career in.

“I worked in the underbelly of the industry, I worked in London and got treated like garbage by some primadona chefs, but that’s life,” he said.

“If you really want to do this for a living, follow your heart. There’s nothing wrong with different types of food.

“You don’t have to do extreme fine dining.

Do fish and chips. Do a food truck. Do high end comfort food. Do something you like and enjoy…If you want to do it, work for people you look up to, people who will treat you right.”

The two-day event started with a Friday evening Mystery Wine Competition where chefs prepared a dish they felt perfectly suited the mystery bottle of wine they had received less than 24 hours before.

The wine was unveiled as Stoneboat Vineyards 2012 Pinotage from the Okanagan Valley.

Chefs were given $600 to shop for ingredients to provide a small plate nosh for the 500 guests in attendance.

Invited guests were able to taste the chefs’ creations and cast their own

ballot.

Emerging as the People’s Choice for this single event was Chef Mark McCrowe of Aqua Kitchen/Bar from St. John’s, Newfoundland.

The Grand Finale at the Delta Grand Okanagan Resort and Conference Centre saw the 11 chefs competing in an all-out, slam-down competition.

Dishes were partnered with their chosen Canadian winery/cidery.

The evening was simply delicious, with the very best of Canada’s culinary scene fully evident.

The biggest church in Kelowna is getting bigger.

Trinity Baptist, located on Springfield Road, has announced plans to build a $6-million, 29,000-square foot addition to its 105,000-square foot complex.

The addition, to be built where a storage building and the church’s existing youth services space is now located, will house what the church calls its “Next Gen” ministries.

They include services for elementary school, middle and high school kids, as well as older students.

According to senior pastor Wayne Alguire, the new space will not only add room for the church’s operations, but will likely include space available for public use.

“This is about Trinity growing to impact our growing city,” he said.

He added the church feels it is important to

The cost of the addition will be borne by Trinity’s huge congregation, and Alguire said the church will not go into debt to construct the building.

Trinity Baptist is the largest church in the city and, according to church officials, one of the 10 largest in Western Canada. Each weekend it holds three services in its huge auditorium that seats 2,200 people.

The auditorium space is so large, it annually hosts local high school graduation ceremonies and has also hosted several large civic events in the past, including the salute to fire fighters and emergency personnel following the 2003 Okanagan Mountain Park Forest Fire that destroyed hundreds of homes in the southern part of the city.

Alguire said the new space is needed because

the existing area set up for older students just five years ago, is already too small.

“Our students just outgrew it,” said Alguire.

He said at a time when many churches across Canada are seeing their numbers dwindling, Trinity is growing, especially with younger people.

So the plan was hatched to build the new four-storey space, which will include classrooms on its roof, a roof garden, offices, a large lobby/meeting area with a food service, a recreation/games area, a worship/arts space with a stage and room for 200 kids and an even larger multi-use area that could be used as a gymnasium, for concerts, theatre, meetings and presentations.

Alguire said it’s important that the new space be part of the

community as that’s an integral part of the church’s mission in the city.

As such, space in the building will be available for rent or be donated to groups the church works with.

The location of the new building fronts Springfield Road on the east side of the existing church complex. If all goes according to plan, it will be up and running by the fall of 2017.

Alguire said while the church membership has endorsed the building plan, final decisions about timing and how the building will be built— all at once or in phases— will be made by the end of the month based on the pledges from the congregation.

The fundraising campaign starts this month and will run until the structure is complete.

The mother of one of two women at the centre of last Friday’s historic Supreme Court of Canada decision to strike down the country’s ban on doctor-assisted suicide, says her daughter would be “absolutely elated.”

“I’m sure she was looking down on Ottawa (home of the Supreme Court) and smiling,” said Anne Fomenoff, speaking of her daughter Gloria Taylor.

Taylor, from West Kelowna, was one of two terminally ill women who challenged Canada’s ban on doctor-assisted suicide in the country’s highest court in 2012. On Friday,

posthumously, she won.

The Supreme Court’s nine justices unanimously ruled in favour of Taylor, who died in October 2012 after the arguments to the Supreme Court were made. Her fellow plaintiff, Kay Carter, went to Switzerland to end her life.

Taylor was 64 when she died, as a result of an infection from a perforated colon.

She suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a crippling disease with no known cure.

Prior to the Supreme Court challenge, Taylor and the B.C. Civil Liberties Association were successful in having the B.C. Supreme Court strike down part of the Criminal

New fire chief named for West Kelowna The District of West Kelowna has revealed that Jason Brolund will replace the retiring Wayne Schnitzler as the new fire chief.

Brolund, currently with the Kelowna Fire Department, will officially start his new job for West Kelowna on March 27.

Members of West Kelowna Fire Rescue and District of West Kelowna have enjoyed an excellent professional relationship with Brolund during the past several years in his capacity as the regional emergency program coordinator for the Central Okanagan.

“I am extremely pleased to join West Kelowna Fire Rescue as their chief. I have served alongside many West Kelowna firefighters during active emergency operations and I know that Chief Schnitzler and his assistant chiefs lead a dedicated and highly-skilled team of emergency responders,” said Brolund, in a district press release.

Brolund, with more than 19 years of firefighting experience, is a deputy fire chief for the Kelowna Fire Department.

He is an adjunct instructor for the Justice Institute of British Columbia, has served as a firefighter, first responder, fire inspector and dispatcher in his time with the City of Kelowna, as well as a paramedic for the BC Ambulance Service.

Brolund also holds a Bachelors’ Degree in Technology with a major in Emergency Management, a Fire Service Leadership diploma, and a Computer Information Systems diploma.

“Many of us know Jason well, having worked with him during Emergency Operations Centre activations, and already know he is a strategic leader with exceptional relationship building skills and a calm, results-driven approach,” said Tracey Batten, West Kelowna general manager of administrative and protective services.

“We are extremely fortunate that Jason will be joining our senior management team and leading West Kelowna Fire Rescue.”

Kelowna Fire Chief Jeff Carlisle said he is very sorry to be losing such an exceptional team member.

“Jason’s commitment, leadership and diligence to the Kelowna Fire Department over the last 12 years has been extraordinary. Jason has been an exceptional chief officer and will be missed by KFD,” said Carlisle.

“However, we know opportunities to become fire chief don’t come along very often and Jason is ready for this next assignment.”

But that ruling was itself struck down by the B.C. Court of Appeal in 2013. So the case went to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Following the arguments before the high court, Taylor was given special personal dispensation to have a doctor-assist suicide, the only person in Canada to receive that.

The court did so because of her advanced condition at the time and the fact the court’s ruling would likely be handed down after she died.

But in the end, she did not need it, said her mother.

Fomenoff said her daughter volunteered to be a plaintiff in the court battle in B.C. as soon as she was diagnosed, feeling it would help to have someone who was still healthy enough to participate and explain the needs of a person facing a painful terminal illness and death.

“She was the type of person who once she got it into her mind, she was going to see it through,” said Fomenoff.

She said Taylor’s whole family supported her

effort and was delighted with the ruling.

“I had no doubt it would happen,” said Taylor’s mother.

Taylor’s challenge followed an unsuccessful attempt to overturn the country’s doctor-assisted suicide ban in 1992 by another B.C. ALS-sufferer, Sue Rodriquez .

In 2012, Taylor called Rodriquez a hero for her attempt despite its failure.

On Friday, Fomenoff said she believed her daughter and Rodriquez were “partying with the angels,” following the Supreme Court ruling.

The ruling gives the

federal and the provincial governments one-year to write new legislation allowing doctor-assisted suicide and limits it to competent adults with grievous and irremediable conditions and enduring and intolerable suffering, both mental and physical.

The ban remains in effect for the year.

Fomenoff said she believed her daughter was fighting for the terminally ill to have a choice.

She said no one wants to die but when the time comes, Canadians should have a choice about their death.

In the case of the terminally ill, that choice should include an option where they do not have to suffer a painful lingering death.

“Death is a natural thing,” she said. “But we live in a death-denying society. We need to talk about this.”

And she urged Canadians to talk with their families about how they want to die.

“In my family we talk about it openly,” she said.

Now, she feels, with the legacy her daughter has left, others may be more willing to talk about it too.

She was a hockey player, a makeup aficionado, had a generous heart, a “onein-a-million smile” and she’ll be missed by many.

Alexandra “Alley” Nyuli, 21, was laid to rest at a ceremony at Willow Park church last Saturday.

The funeral, which paid homage to a short but impactful life, attracted hundreds of people who knew the young woman as well as hundreds of emergency service workers.

Alexandra’s father, Curtis Nyuli, is the chief of the Joe Rich fire department and as such, was one of the first to

arrive at her vehicle after it plummeted down a snow covered ravine on Jan. 28.

The story of a father having to tend to his own daughter in a horrific and fatal car crash sent shockwaves through the community of Joe Rich and beyond, and the Nyuli family has since been overwhelmed by the support it sparked.

When he spoke at his daughter’s ceremony, Nyuli offered a little insight into what that looked like.

Beyond the assistance he received at the crash scene from his fellow firefighters, a couple of days later the family was looking for Alexandra’s phone and they stepped

up again.

Three to four hours after taking on the task they showed up at his door.

They said, “We had to rappel down a quarter of the mountain to get the phone, but we got it” he told the crowd, explaining how surprised and humbled he was to have their help.

Beyond the fire department, there has been more support from the community, in the form of calls, emails, Facebook messages and much more.

“It’s mind boggling… it makes a big difference in our mourning,” Nyuli said.

Also making a difference in that process

was the send off the family decided to give Alexandra.

“Naturally as parents you expect to one day... put on a big celebration for them, especially if they’re girls,” he said.

“It’s usually a wedding.

Unfortunately that’s not going to happen.”

Instead, Alexandra’s life was celebrated by all the people who loved her in a ceremony that included speeches, a video montage and music on a stage with the hockey gear, scrubs and memorabilia she loved.

Laughter rang out through the church numerous times as family and friends recalled special moments with the young woman.

Her casket was taken from the church atop a Joe Rich fire engine, while a pipe band led the procession.

Alexandra Nyuli’s parents and sister said goodbye to her Saturday morning at a funeral that saw hundreds from the communities of Joe Rich and emergency workers from across the Central Okanagan pay their respects.

Strip search policy examined in light of recent court decision kmichaels@kelownacapnews.com

Kelowna Mounties are reviewing a recent court judgment that touches on their strip search protocols to determine its impact on “procedures, policy or training,” says media spokesperson Const. Kris Clark.

The review-prompting court decision was delivered late January by Judge Ellen Burdett, and related to a repeat drug offender’s arrest.

Police picked up Madison Fine for possessing drugs for the purpose of trafficking in downtown Kelowna on Feb. 27, 2014.

At that time the police officer who made the arrest found a wallet with $915.

The assortment of bills was consistent with drug trafficking, said Burdett in her judgment.

Also in the purse was an open bag of baking soda, which is commonly used as a cutting agent in processing cocaine

and two cell phones Fine had in her hands when arrested rang frequently.

As she was transported to the detachment, a female Mountie was called in.

She, along with a female civilian employee, took Fine into a search room.

When she told Fine to remove her pants, a piece of tin foil fell out.

When Fine took off her underwear, a bag was visible.

Inside the bag were 48 packets of cocaine, crack and heroin, Burdett said.

During a voir dire, Fine’s lawyer Rajdeep Basra argued police had no reasonable grounds to arrest Fine and delayed her from calling a lawyer due to the strip search.

The judge concluded there was no such breach.

Fine removed her own clothes during the strip search and she was never fully undressed.

But she was not told she would be videotaped or monitored, or that many other individuals,

including men, could potentially view the strip search if they were in the monitoring room, and that’s where practices at the local detachment came into question.

“In my view, the RCMP practice in the Kelowna detachment of video recording and broadcasting strip searches to a central monitoring room breaches the requirement that the strip search is carried out in a private area such that no one other than the individuals engaged in the search can observe the search,” said Burdett.

“I find that the video taping of strip searches and simultaneous broadcast to monitoring rooms at the Kelowna detachment is routine.

(An officer) testified that he assumed the cameras were ‘always on’ as there is no start and stop mechanism on them.”

Burdett acknowledged that the use of video cameras in the detention areas of police detachments is necessary for both safety reasons and for the preservation of evidence, however, she said, the reasonableness of videotaping everything in the detention area should not include videotaping and simultaneously broadcasting a strip search to a central monitoring area.

Such videotaping should only be captured on a recorder inside a private search room and accessible to a limited number of people if allegations of misconduct arise.

Police action in this case, she said, showed ignorance of the law rather than a pattern of misconduct.

Tracking immunization Parents of babies and younger children have another job to put on their to-do list: get their child vaccinated.

But unlike the situation where dentists remind their patients every six months to get a teeth cleaning, there is no similar immunization reminder for parents except for those they set up for themselves.

And this is a problem.

Certainly, health authorities face challenges from immunization foes who fear that vaccinations may be dangerous or that mandatory vaccinations violate their rights or religious principles.

But by far the biggest obstacle to greater participation rates is that people forget to get their child’s shots at 12 and 18 months. Once the parent returns to work or has another child, they can be too busy or distracted to make an appointment or they don’t understand how important it is.

The vaccinations are free but It’s up to parents to keep track of this information either by mental notes, signing up for free text reminders or downloading the ImmunizeCA app to keep track.

By the time kids get into school, the process becomes easier because boosters are offered for children in Grades 6 and 9. Therefore, parents of younger children have to be diligent on following through on this task. For that to happen, they need to know that missing out on the 12 month vaccination, which includes the first dose of mmr (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine to protect against measles, their children could be at risk for a vary serious disease and they could pass the illness on to some other child.

Although the disease has been virtually eradicated in Canada, there is still a chance of catching it from an unvaccinated visitor from overseas.

No one said raising a child would be easy and until a simpler way of immunizing non school aged kids is found, parents will have to take on this responsibility themselves.

Post-secondary ‘re-engineering’ begins Premier Christy Clark’s push to “reVictoria News engineer” the B.C. education system is moving ahead TOM aggressively in B.C.’s FLETCHER 25 post-secondary institutions.

One of the first tasks for Andrew Wilkinson in his new role as advanced education minister was to outline the shift in operating grants for colleges and universities to in-demand occupations. By 2017, a quarter of the money for postsecondary institutions will be directed to areas where labour force surveys forecast a need.

This was greeted with some alarm when it was announced last year. Simon Fraser University president Andrew Petter at first downplayed the coming skills shortage as “relatively small” and warned against pushing post-secondary institutions into a “zero sum battle for dollars.”

Petter has since come on board, as his approving comments were featured in the ministry’s Jan. 26 news release detailing the shift. He and others have been assured that in spite of Clark’s rhetoric, suggesting trades training is in and university is out, the news for SFU and other universities isn’t all that bleak.

Wilkinson is completing a province-wide tour of all post-secondary institutions this week, and I reached him at his visit to Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops.

“The response to this has generally been pretty good, because the students are putting this pressure on institutions themselves,” he said. “Some of the institutions are … shrinking things like teacher education and putting more effort into the science-based, quantitative fields that are often related to these indemand occupations.”

The surplus of teacher graduates has been noticeable for some time, but that’s largely a function of oversupply, much of it in urban areas. In the Cariboo, for example, teaching jobs are projected to have the highest number of openings by 2022, followed by nursing and retail and wholesale trade managers. Then come heavy duty

mechanics and electricians, but also paraprofessional jobs in legal, social, community and educational services.

Province-wide, it’s part of a broader demographic shift to fewer children and more retirees. In fact the government started this targeted funding a decade ago with health care, forcing universities to produce more doctors, nurses, lab techs and so forth.

The retiring baby boom is expected to account for more than half of the openings in the next decade, which will expand the skills demand across most fields, beyond the trades training for the anticipated liquefied natural gas industry and other high-demand industrial areas such as truck driving.

Wilkinson notes that of the ministry’s $1.9 billion budget, about 60 per cent goes into general postsecondary education, for introductory courses that students take when they are seeking a career path, through undergraduate studies to professions.

“So I think the idea that we’re going to somehow minimize or diminish funding in that general education, arts and science category is just not true,” he said.

Key to this shift is measuring the performance of courses offered at colleges, universities and technical schools. Each year, the ministry surveys about 30,000 graduates to find out whether their studies helped them find a related job.

The results are available on a website that breaks them out by institution and general study area. To find it, do a web search for “BC student outcomes” and select the “executive dashboard” to check the results for courses and schools in your region.

The site provides charts showing the percentage of students who land relevant jobs. Not surprisingly, it tends to be higher for technical programs and lower for fine arts.

It also shows grads’ average wages, a sobering but useful bit of information for high school students and their parents.

Time to put ‘smart meter paranoia to rest’

To the editor: In her letter to the editor of Feb. 6 (Keep Your Smart Meter Off My Townhome), Linda McGillvray clearly proved the old saying that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. She clearly is utterly ignorant of the technical facts behind smart meters, and wireless devices in general.

Smart meters transmit at a very low signal level, and they transit for only a minute or so per day. So much for the “dangers” of “long term” exposure.

In contrast, a cordless phone, and especially a cellphone, expose the user to far higher signal levels than a smart meter does.

In fact, the signal level from a smart meter, is roughly similar to that which one is exposed to when one’s next door neighbour is using

their cellphone.

McGillvray claims that installing a smart meter can be a fire risk. What rubbish. Any risk of fire is related to a damaged electrical connector in the meter base (mounted on the house), and has nothing to do with the meter itself. The risk of connector damage in the meter base is the same, whether one were to plug in an analog meter or a smart meter, since the connectors on the back of all meters (smart or analog) are identical.

It really is time to put this smart meter paranoia to rest. None of the wild claims of danger are technically valid, many violate common sense and have as much validity as recent claims that vaccinations are hazardous.

Wonderful event coming up To the editor: Wow, what a wonderful demonstration of neighbourly love and caring on Jan. 19 of 10 young people who stood outside Walmart encouraging people to smile. Sure, a great prod to a Canada and a world so wrapped in a pessimistic frown. Imagine if everyone vowed to Make Someone Smile Day a daily holiday and commitment as did the Kelownabased organization Open for Change.

On what has been known as Blue Monday since 2005, the young people renamed it Make Someone Smile Day while smiling throughout their hours on city streets handing out happily-positive messages and gifts to uplift people’s spirits.

Random acts of kindness were smilingly suggested as they chatted with people. The smiling good Samaritans pasted sticky notes on windows of parked cars with the words, “Be Happy You are Amazing.” That, and gift bags, too.

Wouldn’t it be so world-changing if that one per cent—or all of us of self-sufficient income—were as devoted to neighbourly love such as that being organized for Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14 in Kelowna by Open for Change.

It’s organizing a Love Inn to support Inn From The Cold, Metro Community and the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs’ emergency youth shelter.

Love Inn will be a free open-to-the-public event from 10 a.m, to 10 p.m. at Metro Community, 1470 Water St., and will feature varied fund-raising activities, information and education, with lunch and dinner prepared by local groups and eateries. Many volunteers will help with many activities. Noteworthy, especially, is the Pack-A-Sack Run in which Gamechanger Teams will seize upon clues and go to various downtown core spots to fill backpacks with toiletries and other essentials.

Those backpacks will be given to the three

organizations for distribution to the most needy.

As an Open for Change official declares: “We are committed to raising awareness regarding homelessness—why it happens and, more importantly, how we can all help to alleviate the severity of the problem by supporting these three worthy organizations.”

All this certainly gives us so much reason for everyone to be devoted to making all our days a Make Someone Smile Today.

Imagine our world being wholly textured in words expressed in the Friendship Book of 2015 for the day of Jan. 22, as that day’s saying underscored: “Someone once said: ‘The rule of nature is living for others, The sun doesn’t keep its own heat, the trees don’t keep their own fruit, and flowers don’t keep their fragrance to themselves. All these things are given for the benefit of others.” Yep, a rule so worthy of keeping.

All of this is so much attuned to the positivity of various art sketch hangings adorning the walls of our homes, such as: “Friendship is to people what sunshine is to flowers.” Or an owl reading a book and pondering the Wise Words attributed to writer W.A. Vance: “We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give.” And, the heartwarming drawings of two farm kids huddled over a patch of soil—a little sister and her smaller brother, with the underlying words: “Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant.”

All in all, words to live by, and, certainly, we in Canada have so much to smile about.

The opening of the brand new Rutland Community Market is

Nominations open for annual Okanagan College alumni awards The Okanagan College Alumni Association (OCAA) is accepting nominations for the 2015 Distinguished Alumni Award and Young Alumni Award.

The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes alumni of Okanagan College and Okanagan University College for their demonstration of excellence in the areas of leadership, the environment, business or industry, public or community service, the arts, and/ or support for the college.

The Young Alumni Award celebrates the outstanding contributions of an alumna or alumnus who is under the age of 35.

“Reviewing nominations for the alumni awards is always one of the highlights of our year,” said Kara Kazimer, president of the OCAA board of directors. “The achievements of Okanagan College and OUC alumni are as inspiring, diverse and far-reaching as the alumni themselves.

The Canada Revenue Agency has information on its website and a few publications (RC4111) regarding the responsibilities of the people safeguarding the assets of the deceased and what needs to be done when someone has passed away.

The easiest way for surviving family members to wind up your affairs is if you have a will in place.

The will should name the legal representative who would be the executor of the will.

If there is no will, then the court will appoint an administrator as the legal

Working parent At any stage of life it is important to have a savings plan; whether for a future purchase, as an emergency fund, or for retirement.

Matthew Ehrenreich is an associate of McIver Capital Management at the wealth management firm Richardson GMP Limited in downtown Vancouver.

While he and his team tend to cater to high net-worth clients, one common factor he has noticed for individuals at any income level is the desire to be prepared for their future.

When it comes to saving, consider life as having many different stages.

The Accumulation phase: mid-to-late twenties to mid-to-late thirties, when people have the chance to start putting their first bit of money away. This phase is often overlooked as an opportune stage to begin saving, because people are busy starting a family, buying a house or car, and getting into the rhythm of a full-time job.

The Mature Earning phase: age forty to fifty-five, when people have begun to mature in their careers and earn substantially more. They often have kids who are participating in various activities and who will potentially need assistance with saving for their post-secondary education.

It’s a time when there is a greater temptation to spend more money in conjunction with the increased household income, whether its wanting to upgrade to a nicer house, a better car, or taking more vacations.

“At this stage, if people haven’t already developed a sound habit of putting away a little chunk of their income on a consistent basis, it will only become significantly more difficult to get in the habit as the stages of life continue,” says Ehrenreich. “The key is to have developed a small amount of savings by this stage already, that you can continue to add to month after month as you approach the third stage.”

The Peak Earning years: age fifty-five to sixty-five, which in most cases is the final decade of work for many people. At this point they have spent the majority of their lives in the workforce and are in the process of reaching their potential. If health permits, these will be the years when people make the most money and also begin to think about life after the workplace. For too many families today, it isn’t until this phase that they begin to realize what the costs of retirement will be.

people aged 50 to 59 have saved less than $100,000.

Given that the average retired person in Canada now spends approximately $51,000 a year, it’s clear to see that people are grossly underestimating the costs required to live a sustainable life upon retirement.

With life expectancy increasing, in many cases, people will need to fund up to 20 years of retirement living, meaning that people need to begin putting away money sooner.

A Canadian Payroll Association survey found that 40 per cent of people spend all, or more, of their paycheck.

“This is simply unacceptable,” says Ehrenreich, who advises putting away ten to twenty percent, at minimum, of every paycheck into savings. Along with this, he has other tips when it comes to money management and where to invest for retirement.

Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA): this is the best savings tool available for Canadians, where you can grow money without being taxed, even on withdrawals, and yet far too many do not take advantage of it. It began in 2009 and at this point, Canadians have up to $36,500 available in total contribution room.

Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP): this is an effective way to save for retirement and reduce current taxes. Money grows within it tax-free, much like a TFSA, however, when you withdraw funds you do have to pay taxes, which makes this a more longterm plan for retirement.

Have an emergency fund: It’s important to have enough cash in a bank account to cover three months worth of expenses. If you ever lose a job or are faced with a crisis, emergency or unforeseen expense, this will allow a buffer zone that prevents you from having to dip into your savings.

Setting up an automatic electronic monthly contribution to a savings account is a simple way to start. Establish a difference between needs and wants and cut back on unnecessary spending.

“Every individual’s circumstances are different, which is why it’s important to actually sit down with someone and discuss future goals and expectations for retirement and all of life’s stages,” says Ehrenreich.

“With good habits and dedication, financial freedom can be achieved and people can live the kind of lives they want after retirement; it all starts with a plan.”

The legal representative can charge a fee to the estate to be compensated for the time taken to wind up the affairs of the deceased.

Probate is the process of getting the court to rule that a will is legally valid.

If the person dies with assets such as land, house or investments, the will is usually required to go through probate.

There are fees for the process depending on the value of the assets in the estate.

Canada does not have inheritance tax, but there is probate which is a provincial fee on the assets of the deceased, that could be considered inheritance tax.

Each province has its own fee structure.

If you are the legal representative, your responsibilities under the

Income Tax Act are to file all the required returns for the deceased, make sure that all taxes owing are paid and you need to inform the beneficiaries if any of the amounts that they will receive from the estate are taxable.

The first thing you need to do is to let CRA know that the person has deceased.

When this happens CRA will remove all representatives from the deceased’s account and will stop all automatic payments such as the GST/HST or transfer these payments to the surviving spouse.

At this time the representative needs to provide to CRA a copy of the death certificate, the SIN of the deceased, copy of the will or other legal document such as grant of probate or letter of administration indicating who the legal representative is.

Unwavering entrepreneurial spirit drives brand awareness The social media revolution in the business world isn’t the only phenomena we’re seeing today.

It seems everywhere I go and look, I experience a presence of the branding syndrome.

Is that a disease, you ask? Heavens no, but it is a significant concept in product, personal and concept design marketing that assists in the product selling process.

I am regularly besieged by this syndrome from many of the clients I

It is with this abundance of exposure, I feel prompted to talk a little about entrepreneurial branding, to see if you can find a fit for this in your life’s journey into the

entrepreneurial world.

With our unemployment still fluctuating like a roller coaster and company downsizing continuing to confuse, projecting our economic future causes bewilderment to many Canadians today .

But one topic remains constant, as entrepreneurship remain a hot button item for discussion and advancement.

Starting one’s own venture provides a means of making ends meet while doing what you love, instead of looking for outside employment.

Yes, although entrepreneurship truly does mean risk, it allows for creativity and autonomy.

Even with statistics highlighting apparent failure rates for a plethora of reasons, entrepreneurs who fail still have a better chance of succeeding at their next venture attempt because they

have previously gained knowledge, experience and an understanding of what doesn’t work for them.

Before I continue with some thoughts on establishing your entrepreneurial brand, let me share what to many can be construed as a problem.

When any entrepreneur brands their product, business or concept, invariably that entrepreneur becomes associated with that brand. Think of Bill Gates

That is not a problem of course until the entrepreneur decides to shift gears and consider a new and unrelated venture. Folks, this is not entirely unlikely as we more and more become familiar with the serial entrepreneur concept that has people globally launch a series of entrepreneurial ventures that may or may not have a direct relation to each other.

But, it does pose this question: How does one open a new era of an entrepreneurial venture while still operating under an existing brand personally or otherwise?

To begin anew, and if the two entities are unrelated, you will likely not be able to use your existing brand reputation to attract clients for your newest venture.

Another realistic issue is the possible loss of credibility with existing clients.

They may sometimes assume you are taking on a side job because your initial venture is not doing too well, or they think you may not be as good as you seem. Ouch!

While your entrepreneurial spirit and energy should unquestionably be applauded, we are unfortunately a society accustomed to assume the worst when people take on extra burdens.

But with that said, let me return to this concept of how and why to establish a powerful brand identity in your entrepreneurial journey.

Always be authentic in your brand journey.

People connect with real people and generally can spot superficiality.

Stick always to your core values and beliefs and base your brand off of them.

In essence, never compromise your values nor the image you wish to project.

The devotees you may create will always have certain expectations about your brand. If you

disappoint them by falling off-track, you may lose them forever as loyal fans and customers.

Be unique as many other companies may be selling similar products, services or concepts but few may get any attention at all.

“Distinct or extinct” is an entrepreneurial management phrase citing the importance to differentiate yourself as an entrepreneur from others.

Figure out what makes you different, then tell your tale to the marketplace in a compelling attentiongrabbing fashion to create the magnet that will draw in your customers— and hold pm to them tightly.

No question, you must innovate constantly, another hallmark of the entrepreneurial journey, otherwise your grasp on the market will slip through your fingers at a rapid pace.

Let me close my column today with this point that I believe in very strongly from my own life’s experiences, put yourself around the right people.

As an entrepreneurial person, you will need a strong support system of family, friends and business associates.

The people around you will influence your career, family life and entrepreneurial venture’s success—either positively or negatively.

Surrounding yourself with people you like and trust, not people who are toxic to be around.

So remember, when an entrepreneurial venture is unique and effectively brand marketed, it will stand out and shine.

And when we surround ourselves with the right kind of people, we will be blessed with the type of support to soar our entrepreneurial venture to the moon and back.

Keep your old medications out of local landfills BC’s pharmacists are teaming up with the Regional District of Central Okanagan to urge people to return old medications to their local pharmacy.

In recent years, Central Okanagan residents have returned more than 4,800 kg of medications annually.

There has been a 172 per cent increase in the number of medications returned in the past five years.

In 2009, residents returned less than 1,700 kg of medications, compared to the more than 4,800 kg of medication now returned each year.

The BC Medications Return Program helps divert medications from being thrown in the trash or flushed down the toilet, where they have the potential to harm the environment, children and pets.

The program covers all prescription drugs; over-thecounter medications, including topical antibiotic and antifungal creams; and natural health products that are orally ingested, such as vitamins, minerals, traditional Chinese medicines, herbal products, probiotics and homeopathic medicines. More than 95 per cent of community pharmacies in B.C. participate in the program, which is free for all British Columbians.

“Community pharmacies are accessible to everyone and able to accept medication returns at any time,” said David Pavan, president of the BC Pharmacy Association.

“Pharmacists have been helping to protect their patients and the environment for many years.

“Medication that goes down the drain can have a negative effect on our marine environment, while medication in household garbage is not only accessible to children and pets, but can also contaminate the soil and water sources.”

Any liquid or cream medications should be kept in their original container with any personal information removed or blacked out, and solid medications such as pills should be combined into a small bag. For more information, visit healthsteward.ca.

“The Regional Waste Reduction Office encourages you to return your expired and unused medications to your local pharmacy,” said Rae Stewart, waste reduction facilitator with the Regional District of Central Okanagan.

“By taking care of them properly, it prevents you or someone in your home from inadvertently using expired medications.

“Keeping these items out of the hands of our kids or people who might use them inappropriately is just as important as keeping them out of our local landfill, sewer systems and water supplies.”

Many post-stroke patients have the ability to reach higher levels of physical activity, but choose not to do to the lack of awareness that exercise is feasible and desirable, or don’t feel they have access to appropriate exercise resources.

Exercise is key in decreasing the risk of an additional stroke, enhances motor control, increases strength and flexibility, and it’s very important to improve balance and return to normal movement.

Some 20 to 40 per cent of stroke survivors state

that fatigue is the most debilitating symptom.

Reasons for this are due to the additional effort needed to move due to compensation for weak muscles, is physical deconditioning and selfperpetuating fatigue cycle.

Exercise helps to improve post-stroke fatigue by increasing energy levels and decreases the risk of depression.

The recommendations for stroke patients are not very different from the rest of us—at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity per week, which should include 20 to 60 minutes of aerobic exercise such as walking, stationary cycling and being on the treadmill; strength training using free weights weight machines or circuit training two to three days a week coupled with stretching

I recently attended a workshop on the importance of exercise for those recovering from a stroke and wanted to share some information from what I learned.

While you may not be able to control your genetic predisposition, age, gender or ethnicity, you can do something about other factors that could increase your risk of having a stroke such as obesity, diet, diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure or high blood cholesterol.

Steps to help avoid becoming a statistic in flu season It seems to be all around us. We see it at our children’s school, we see it at Ask Dr. Thiel our workplace and in our community.

It’s something I have experienced first-hand. It seems as inevitable as tax MARKUS season and tourists.

THIEL I am talking about flu season. When I spoke with a patient who is a teacher, she said as much as 40 per cent of her kids were missing because of the flu.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a report that mentioned the flu vaccine was not as successful as they thought it ought to have been.

Some estimates were as low as 17 per cent effective.

So, what do we do? I feel there are some very simple and straightforward solutions to avoiding the flu or, at least minimizing its lingering effects.

It is important that we practice good hand-washing techniques. The majority of the entrance way into our bodies of the flu include pathways like the nose, mouth and ears.

That’s why these areas hurt first just prior to the other lovely symptoms. Contrary to popular opinion, we do not contract the flu by inhaling germs from a cough or sneeze.

In fact, it is usually by our hand to an unknowing orifice of our body such as our nose, ears or mouth.

Washing your hands about five times a day greatly reduces the ability of transmitting the pathogen to you, the unwilling host.

But this brings us to the age old question: Is it the seed or the soil? By this, I mean do we get sick because of the simple exposure to germs or do we get sick because our very own immune system (the soil) is compromised?

I believe the latter. Understanding this, helps us to

potentiate our very own immune response and our ability to fend off any would be cold or flu.

Regular exercise has been proven over and over again to boost the immune system and your response to a pathogen.

In the research, acceptable exercise levels include light or moderate exercise three to five times a week for as little as 20 minutes.

The next thing you need to do is ensure that you get enough sleep. A body that is tired is one that has a weak immune response. If one takes care of their body, it agrees to take care of you.

My next point is about the importance of vitamin D. This vitamin is essential to our very own immune function.

Here in Kelowna, even though we pay a hefty sunshine tax, we don’t really get much sunshine this time of year. Researchers have estimated that 81 per cent of our population is vitamin D deficient.

This is one of the most important steps you can take in avoiding the flu. Because we have no exposure to direct sunlight during this time of year, we have little to no synthesis of vitamin D. During cold and flu season and seeing approximately 60 patients a day, I make sure that I take at least 2000 mg of vitamin D a day. And yes, I shake everyone’s hand.

So, wash your hands, get your sleep, exercise and take vitamin D. Before you know it, the sun will be out again.

The most common reason for using carpet runners is to prevent high traffic areas from resoiling and thereby extending the time between cleanings. Although the runners themselves still need to be cleaned periodically, this is not a good idea for various reasons.

Aesthetically, they tend to create a cluttered look. Some of the soil that would have ended up in the traffic area will accumulate along the edges of the runner. As this area is rarely vacuumed effectively, the soil can be even more difficult to remove when cleaning. Also, the runners will often creep on the floor and must be constantly readjusted. However, the most compelling reason that carpet runners are not a good idea is safety.

They are easy to trip on and injury may result. Plastic runners are even worse as they can be slippery when wet and are extremely dangerous on steps.

Carpet runners are not necessary when a proper vacuuming and cleaning schedule is maintained.

In 2006, Donald Tashkin, M.D., of the University of California in Los Angeles, presented the results of his study “Marijuana Use and Lung Cancer: Results of a Case-Control Study”. Dr. Tashkin found that smoking marijuana does not appear to increase the risk of lung cancer even among heavy users. The more tobacco a person smoked, the greater their risk of developing lung cancer and other cancers of the head and neck. But people who smoked more marijuana were not at increased risk compared with people who smoked less and people who didn’t smoke at all.

The new findings “were against our expectations,” said Donald Tashkin of the University of California at Los Angeles, a pulmonologist who has studied marijuana for 30 years. “We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use,” he said. “What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect.”

Similar findings on the safety of smoked marijuana were released in April 2009 by the Vancouver Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease Research Group. The study presents that smoking both tobacco and marijuana synergistically increased the risk of respiratory symptoms and COPD. Smoking only marijuana, however, was not associated with an increased risk of respiratory symptoms of COPD. Protect your heart this month and beyond Heart disease doesn’t run in my family, but 14 months ago I looked in the mirror and made a troubling realization. I found my midsection was expanding, my belt size was increasing, my stamina was decreasing, and my weight had gone from 145 pounds in my twenties to 160 pounds.

fix’ for a problem that slowly creeped up over 25 years, and was especially tough to tackle given my busy, high-stress job.

That’s when I found ‘myfitnesspal.’ It’s an app for my phone and computer which helps

me keep track of what I eat and the exercise I get. It took 6 months, but I hit my goal weight of 145 pounds and have been holding steady ever since. My belt size is back down, my stamina is up, I feel great in my skin, and grudgingly-- I had to buy some new clothes (I’m not a shopper.).

I also reached my big goal because I set small, achievable ones along the way—and took a ‘no excuses’ approach. Last summer, I spent nearly a month behind the wheel as I completed an extensive farm tour in my capacity as Agriculture Minister. With 6,000 kilometres of road in front of me, it would have been easy to say, ‘it’s too hard to exercise on this schedule. I’ll just wait until the tour’s over to start my weight loss journey.’

Instead, I thought about the small ways I could sneak in a little bit of exercise and trim my calories. Tummy rotations and contractions every 30 minutes as I drove? Sure.

Not indulging in the treats made from delicious farm products like fresh cream and butter? Now that was a bit tougher— but enjoying that B.C.

bounty in moderation, rather than indulging completely, sure made a difference.

I’m not special. You too can achieve the results you want, but it will take a decision on your part to make the first move and reduce the chances of being another heart disease statistic.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation says there is one sudden cardiac arrest every four hours, and that more than 2000 British Columbians die from sudden cardiac arrest each year.

Some of the risk factors are things we can’t control—our age and family history, for example. But we can control things like our nutrition and physical activity, which contribute greatly to our overall wellbeing and stave off a variety of illnesses.

February is the

Foundation’s ‘Heart Month,’ a campaign that supports lifesaving research and raises awareness of heart disease and stroke in communities across Canada. You may encounter some of their local volunteers throughout this month, canvassing for donations and sharing information on how to prevent and treat heart disease and stroke. I encourage you to listen to what they have to say.

Owls soar to Western Canada BT title The 2015 Kelowna Owls were more than happy to oblige their fans by ending the school’s 33year title-drought at the Interior Savings Western Canada Basketball Tournament.

Still, Harry Parmar insists that halting the streak wasn’t all that motivated his Owls in their run to the tournament title.

“We never talked about the streak at all,” said Parmar, the Owls’ head coach. “We just really wanted to win the tournament and that’s what carried us through.

We gutted it out in every game and found a way to win. The effort by the boys was overwhelming.”

Inside a boisterous, jam-packed KSS gym on Saturday night, the Owls gave their fans the school’s first WCBT championship since 1982 with an impressive 70-57 victory over Winnipeg’s Oak Park Raiders, the No. 1-ranked team from Manitoba.

Owls guard and tournament MVP Parker Simson paced his team in the finale with 18 points, while Matt Lafontaine added 15, and Nav Sandhu, 12.

three games, the Owls put on a staunch defensive effort against Oak Park— another big reason why KSS was hoisting the trophy on Saturday night.

But by the time the B.C. men’s championship rolled around, the Okanagan foursome had more than enough in its arsenal to get the job done.

Cotter drew to the button with his final rock to score a 7-6 victory over Victoria’s Dean Joanisse to earn a berth in the Brier next month in Calgary.

“It just feels fabulous,” said Cotter, who has won four of the last five B.C. titles. “I’m so proud of my guys. We went through a lot of adversity. We had so many one-point games this week and we knew we had a target on our backs. We seem to like those close games and relish in that moment.”

The Cotter team— which added Kuhn at third last fall to replace

departed skip John Morris—didn’t exactly do it the easy way in Vernon.

The Okanagan curlers lost to Joanisse 8-5 in the 1-2 Page playoff game Saturday morning, then had to scratch out a 7-6 win over Kelowna’s Brent Pierce in the semifinal later that evening to qualify for the final.

“It was a grind all week,” Griffith said.

“There were some good teams there that didn;t make it easy. But we battled through, played one shot at a time and tried to make the most of every one. It turned out well for us.”

The win marked both

Cotter and Sawatsky’s fifth B.C. men’s curling title. Kuhn, a former world junior champ, was a winner for the first time, while Griffith is now a three-time provincial men’s champ.

“It feels phenomenal,” Griffith said of the win.

“It’s every curlers dream to play for those purple hearts, so to get another one is great. Some guys play their entire lives and don’t get one. I have the greatest teammates and that’s the reason we’re going to another Brier.”

The Okanagan rink will represent B.C. at the Tim Hortons Brier, Feb. 28 to March 8 in Calgary.

Rockets still have two goaltenders on the roster with WHL experience— rookie Jake Morrissey and 19-year-old Michael Herringer.

The two will split time between the pipes until Whistle is deemed fit to return.

“It’s been kind of a blessing for us to be in this situation,” said Rockets head coach Dan Lambert. “With what happened to Morrissey earlier and now with Jackson out, I guess things happen for a reason.

“We just felt having three guys would be the best way to go,” Lambert added. “It would have been tough to decide who to keep and who not to keep, so holding on to all three has turned out well.”

Whistle underwent an appendectomy on the weekend and is expected to miss at least the next couple of weeks.

On Monday, Morrissey, 17, backstopped the Rockets to a 5-2 victory over the Prince George Cougars.

Herringer, who was released earlier this season by Saskatoon and subsequently claimed by Kelowna, was scheduled to start Tuesday night against Seattle.

Meanwhile, Rockets’ centre Tyson Baillie remains sidelined with an upper body injury suffered Saturday in Kamloops.

ANN PATERSON (ANNIE) Of Kelowna, BC passed away February 3rd, 2015, at the age of 79 years.

Survived by her husband Jim of 59 years, Ann will be deeply missed by her family, children Gordon (Julie-Clare), Carol (Rick), Jimmy, Heather (Michael) and grandchildren Alexander, Mathew, Brittany, Cory, Anna, Finlay, Freya, Hannah, Landon, great grandchild Frank and brother Bill Woiken, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Ann graduated from K.S.S. and started her accounting career with McGavins Bakery in Kelowna. Moving on to Coquitlam, Ann worked for Kelly Douglas in Burnaby and then moved to Port Coquitlam where she worked for Kennametal Inc. -Macro Division for 33 years. Returning back to Kelowna for retirement, Ann took on many activities, treasurer of the Celiac Chapter of Kelowna, bridge, lawn bowling, golf and walking. Thank you to the doctors and nurses of Kelowna General Hospital, 6th West for their extraordinary care.

A celebration of life will be held at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC, on Saturday February 21st, at 4:00pm. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Celiac Foundation of Kelowna or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. and Yukon, will be gratefully received.

We are sad to announce the passing of our dear Mom and Grandma, Isabel Campbell on February 4th, 2015 at the Village at Mill Creek. Born May 15, 1930, in Andrew, Alberta, Isabel enjoyed most of her life in the Okanagan.

She loved to spend time with her family, and is survived by her daughters, Shelley (Michael) and Beverley (Bill), and her grandchildren, Niki, Jordy and Andrew. She also leaves behind her brother Bill, and sisters, Vicky and Mary. Isabel was a passionate gardener, traveler, pet lover and dedicated hockey fan. She particularly enjoyed many happy times with her grandchildren, who adored her. We thank her friends and staff at the Village at Mill Creek for their care and kindness. A special thank-you to Dr. Michael Bobyn and his staff for their compassionate care. A private family gathering will be held this summer in her favourite place – the garden. Isabel saved her quick and lively steps to dance her way to heaven.

PAWLYSHYN, JULIA

October 28, 1926 ~ February 5, 2015 On February 5, 2015 Julia passed from this life, surrounded by her loving family. She began her journey to reunite in heaven with her parents Frank and Maria Pawlik, sister Mary Kolewaski and brother John Pawlik.

Julia will be greatly missed by her husband Harry, with whom she shared 33 wonderful years of marriage. She will also be lovingly remembered by her niece Jeannette Kolewaski (and her husband Lloyd), sisters-in-law Kay Bartko and Olga Boklaschuk (and her husband Chuck).

A heartfelt thank you to the nurses, staff and volunteers at Hospice House for their exceptional care and compassion.

LOVERIN, GORDON JOHNSTON

“Good Old Gord” also known as “The Chief” passed away peacefully January 27th, 2015 at David Lloyd Jones Home.

He was in his 90th year. Gord was born on March 21st, 1924 just outside Hazenmore, Saskatchewan, otherwise known as Section 35, TWP #9, Range 9, West of the 3rd Meridian. He was one of 14 children of John and Pearl Loverin and was the last survivor. Gord was predeceased by his loving wife Catherine in 2001. They had four children, Gary, Darlene (Jim), Richard, Dean (Julie), grandchildren Denny (Lisa), Darren (Shannon), Katherine, Laura, Mark, Joel, Geordie and Kaiden. Great Grandchildren; Kyra, Teya, Nolan and Morgan. Gord spent 29 years in the Royal Canadian Air Force (Ottawa, Trenton, France, Winnipeg and Regina) before retiring to Kelowna in 1972. He started his Real Estate career with Okanagan Realty, then with Block Bros., and finally with Coldwell Banker. Gord had many passions, some of which were collecting antiques (1907 Triumph Motorcycle) military badges and coins. What he liked most was “making the deal, and talking to the people!”

Gord was always one to initiate a card game. Whether it was 31, crib, poker or bridge; anything to make a couple of loonies. Gord loved his games of golf at the Kelowna Golf and Country Club. Over the years Gord was involved with the Westbank Lions Club where he spearheaded the First House Lottery which raised money for the move and upgrading of the Westbank Community Hall. At one time he was also known as the “Unofficial Mayor” of Westbank.

Gord was also involved with “The Burtches” which is now a subsidized residence in Kelowna. Gord was always thinking and always ready to have fun no matter what it involved. It usually involved having a “Short-one”. Appleton Rum and short on Coke. In the later years Gord resided at Sandalwood Adult Community, where he had many good friends and good times. We wish to thank Sharon Loverin Whaley and her husband Jim for always being involved in our family. We also as a family would like to thank the Staff at David Lloyd Jones Home for making his last days most enjoyable. Special thanks to his long-time Doctor – Dr. Grant Chamberlain for assisting him on his many visits. A celebration of Gord’s life will be held at a later date. GLAUSER/GOODWIN, KATHLEEN MARGARET (NEE CARVER) Passed away on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at the age of 94. Survived by her loving family, daughter Wilma of Orangeville, ON; grandchildren: Mark (Janice), Colleen (Willie), Deborah (Walter), James (Amanda); great grandchildren: Mackenzie, Connor, Sophia, Tessa and Lily; sister Lyla; brother Stanley (Sietske) and many extended family. Predeceased by her husbands Wilmer Glauser and Bill Goodwin; brothers Art, Crawford, Howard and Gerald; sisters Marguerite and Caroline. Kay touched many lives in her profession as a hairdresser, starting in Arborfield, SK and she was proud of her accomplishments as a curler and award winning golfer.

After retirement, Kay and Wilmer enjoyed many lovely winters in Hawaii. As requested, there will be no service.

SARAH ELIZABETH BUSKELL (NEE STRACHAN) passed away on February 3, 2015 at the age of 32. She will be remembered affectionately by her loving husband Jeff; parents Les and Shirley Strachan; brothers Clinton (Courtnee), and Cameron (Kathleen); grandparents Henry and Phylis Tostenson, and Marie Strachan; nieces Celeste and Adelaide, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Sarah loved her family and friends. She also loved camping, dancing, music, travelling (with Jeff, the love of her life). You could find Sarah relaxing in their backyard, sipping her tea at a local coffee shop or sitting under a tree in the shade watching Jeff swim. Sarah loved life and was passionate about being a kindergarten teacher. Never to be forgotten are Sarah’s pets Tula, Meowsers and Nina always giving her comfort and companionship. Sarah will be loved “To the Moon and Back” “Always and Forever”. The family would like to thank the amazing staff at the BC Cancer Agency in Kelowna, and all the wonderful people involved with her care. BYLAND, KATIE It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Katherine Brigitta Byland on February 7, 2015, surrounded by her loving family after a long battle with cancer. Katherine was born in Palanka, Yugoslavia on September 18, 1935. After an idyllic childhood she soon felt the ravages of WW ll and lost both her parents by the age of ten. She immigrated to Canada in 1949 with her younger sister Anna, arriving in Kelowna where she had family. She met Adrian Byland while working at a café and they married in 1956, starting a fledging business that would become Byland’s Nurseries. Katherine is survived by son John (Maria), daughter Anita Thorsen (Rico), grandchildren Michael, Melanie, Venessa and Jordan and sister Anna (Dennis) Brown. She was predeceased by her husband Adrian in 1982. The family would like to thank all the health care professionals that cared for Katherine especially the staff at Hospice House.

Donations in Katie’s memory can be made to the Central Okanagan Hospice Association – Hospice House, 2035 Ethel Street, Kelowna, BC, V1Y 2Z6.

Young cross country ski racers earn medals The Telemark Racers Cross Country Ski Team earned 14 medals at the Teck B.C. Cup Series Jan. 24 and 25 at the MacPherson Nordic Trails in Revelstoke.

Gareth Williams earned gold in the 10km Junior Boys event, while teammate David Walker was seventh.

Garret Siever earned a gold in the 2.5km Bantam Boy’s 2004 division, with Nikhil Filatow eighth and Cameron Hobbs, 12th.

Jasmine Filatow won silver in the 1 km Pee Wee Girls 2006 race while Tamasin Graham took fifth, and Kaelin Urness 10th for Pee Wee Girls

Community honours athletes, volunteers Individuals from Kelowna’s sports community were honoured this month for their exceptional efforts, both on and off the field of play.

Pacific Sport and Tourism Kelowna acknowledged 11 volunteers and 10 athletes at the 2015 Community Sport Heroes Awards at the Rotary Arts Centre.

The honourees in the volunteer category were: Gordy Charles, Alisa Brownlee, Peter Rudd, Joey Hertz, Steve Brunsden, Peter Dennert, Bill Farley, Steve Smith, Colleen Bryant, Norman Hanson and Roy Gillespie.

The Okanagan will be well represented on Team B.C with 46 athletes, 11 coaches and six support staff from 14 sports heading to the Games.

Team B.C. preps with game at Memorial Team B.C. will tune up for the Canada Winter Games with an exhibition game tonight at Memorial Arena against Kelowna’s bantam tier 1 girls’ team.

Face off is 6 p.m.

The provincial U18 girls’ squad is coached by Sylvain Leone, who is also the head coach of KMHA’s bantam female A program.

Team B.C. has spent the the last few days in Ke-

lowna preparing for the games.

“The Canada Games is one of the largest events for Canada’s young athletes,” said Leone. “This being the first time hosting in B.C. really adds to event for the players.

We’re very excited to hold our pre-competition camp in Kelowna.

It hosts a large female hockey community and large part of our team

trains in the Okanagan.

We really appreciate the KMHA for supporting with some practice ice and setting up the game. We’re looking forward to a full house.”

The Canada Winter Games will be held Feb. 13 to March 1 in Prince George.

Romance, magic, adventure are all words that come to mind when I think of this month’s concert,” said Rosemary Thomson, music director, Okanagan Symphony Orchestra.

“We have so much talent on stage this month including our youth orchestra who will perform side by side with your symphony, this concert makes for a perfect Valentine’s weekend date night that everyone will enjoy.”

Featured works in this performance include Three Stratford Fanfares for Brass and Percussion written by composer Louis Applebaum; Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy written by Piotr Ilych Tchaikovsky which will include musicians from the Okanagan Symphony Youth Orchestra joining the OSO musicians on stage; and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, written by Felix Mendelssohn.

Several guest artists are also featured this month and will also join the OSO on stage including actor Maureen Thomas, from Calgary, who will portray the characters of Midsummer Night’s Dream; soprano Carmen Harris, who is thrilled to perform in her Okanagan valley with the OSO; Kelowna Secondary Ladies Chamber Choir, an auditioned group of 38 made up of Grade 10, 11 and 12 students; and soprano Mia Harris, a Penticton resident; and the Okanagan Symphony Youth Orchestra, comprised of 80 youth members.

THEATRE Big Sister, Little Brother Feb. 12 to 22 Bumbershoot Theater 125-1295 Cannery Lane Kelowna A new twist on the classic story of the Emperor’s New Clothes will lead off the 2015 season at Bumbershoot Theatre.

Big Sister Little Brother is a fast-paced story is about two siblings who make a rash promise to provide royalty with magical garments.

Created in the U.K. by playwright Mike Kenny, the production will feature Jennifer Turner and Jordan Jenkins in the lead roles.

It will also mark the first experience as a Bumbershoot director for Neal Facey, who designed a show for the company last fall and is currently teaching a class at Bumbershoot.

Also new will be the first of the ‘City Pizza Saturdays,’ which will take place on the first Saturday evening performance Feb. 14, when pizza will be included in the ticket price. The successful ‘PJ Milk and Cookie’ night will continue to be offered at the Thursday, Feb. 12, show opening.

“Jennifer Turner is new to Kelowna and she will be an outstanding Big Sister.” Jordan Jenkins, who plays Little Brother, a graduate of Kelowna Secondary who has been working as a professional actor in Vancouver.

“I love the whimsical world created by playwright Mike Kenny in this show, and to spend time with those sly and deceitful tailors will be a wonderful experience for the audience,” Facey said.

Big Sister, Little Brother will be presented on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 6.30 p.m., with Saturday and Sunday matinees, 2 p.m.
