Common areas in city facilities not for politics: Curtis
EXELTA GYMNASTICS CUP
DIRECTIVE ISSUED AFTER CANDIDATE ANNOUNCEMENT
The City of Red Deer manager has had to issue a directive after a public area in one of its facilities was used for political purposes. On Thursday morning, Progressive Conservative nomination candidate Darcy Mykytyshyn made an announcement in the common area just inside the entrance at Collicutt Centre. He told the crowd of about 35 people who attended that he was seeking the Red Deer South PC nomination. While the event unfolded, people ran or walked by on the overhead running track, high school students passed by and parents trundled in with bundled up young children heading to the pool or other venues in Collicutt Centre. “The commons at the Collicutt is allowed to be used by non-profit groups at no cost. This booking was therefore erroneously taken and should really
not have been made,” city manager Craig Curtis said on Friday. But Mykytyshyn had been assured earlier by the city’s booking staff that it he could book the space, said Curtis, who was unaware the booking had occurred until a query was made by the Red Deer Advocate. “They kind of confused it with when the minister comes in to give a funding announcement, you know something like that, then obviously that space is a good one to say, ‘Here’s a million dollars’ ... or something like that.” “But here we’re talking about a competitive environment and I’ve issued a directive that if there any further bookings of this kind, it would be in our paid-for facilities,” Curtis said. The Collicutt Centre does have meeting rooms that can be rented. “The candidate was led to believe it was fine by our booking people. I don’t want to point any fingers at him (Mykytyshyn).”

Couple celebrates 80th anniversary BY SUSAN ZIELINSKI ADVOCATE STAFF Ida and Wilfred Kenzle have hit celebrity couple status. After all, how many people get to celebrate their 80th wedding anniversary. Last year, Wilfred, 101, and Ida, 99, of Red Deer, moved out of their condo and into a couple’s suite at the continuing care facility Villa Marie. The couple met in 1931 in Central Alberta and have 7 children, 14 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. They celebrated their milestone with about fifty family members on Saturday and another celebration was held at Villa Marie on Sunday. Wilfred said it all started with a nofrills ceremony before a Presbyterian minister in Sylvan Lake on Feb. 7, 1935. “We had what you call a quick wedding. We couldn’t afford nothing else,” Wilfred said. Ida, who has lost most of her hearing, said they’ve done well putting up with each other. “I used to be able to hear too much. I think everyone knows how that goes,” she said with a laugh. They settled on a mixed grain farm outside of Sylvan Lake to raise a family. “He was the man and did a lot of the heavy work, and I just had the babies,” she said with a twinkle in her eyes. Their youngest daughter Diana Goodman, 69, of Red Deer, said when her parents got married the price of new car was $625 and a loaf of bread cost eight cents.

Search and rescue technician missing after avalanche BY THE CANADIAN PRESS
Goodman said her mother’s family moved to the Sylvan Lake area when Ida was only three.
LAKE LOUISE — After days of waiting for the avalanche risk to subside, Parks Canada searchers were scheduled on Sunday to set foot on the snow that buried a fellow rescuer in Banff National Park. But at the end of the day and as darkness began to fall, the agency released a statement saying the risk of avalanches remained high and it was unable to send the searchers in. Monday, the statement said, would hopefully be better. Sgt. Mark Anthony Salesse, 44, a search and rescue technician based in Winnipeg, was swept off a cliff by an avalanche on Thursday while ice climbing on a slope called the Polar Circus. His climbing partner searched the snow below but couldn’t find him. Parks Canada staff searched the area by helicopter the following day, but considered the avalanche risk too high to allow ground rescuers to enter the area. They triggered avalanches on Saturday to make the area safer, but it was too late to put searchers on the ground.

Wilfred, 101, and Ida Kenzle, 99, celebrate their 80th Wedding Anniversary with some cake at the Covenant Care’s Supportive Living facility Vill Marie on Sunday afternoon. The couple met in 1931 in the region. Wilfred and Ida rarely spend time apart, and live in one of the couple’s suites at Villa Marie. “I remember when we got electricity on the farm. That bare light bulb was pretty exciting to us,” said Goodman whose oldest sibling is 79. The family eventually moved to Sylvan Lake.
