Ridge lets go of economic manager Sandy Blue wasn’t the right fit: mayor

Maple Ridge council fired economic development manager Sandy Blue on Tuesday, saying it wanted to go in a different direction.

Blue, who’s been manager of Blue strategic economic initiatives since 2008, was relieved of her position Tuesday.

Last November, Blue was elected for the first time to Abbotsford council, where she lives, as part of the Abbotsford First team.

But it was the kindness of a stranger who saved her life.

low wandering around east Maple Ridge at 256th Street and 128th Avenue, barely able to walk, and brought her into the SPCA Community Animal Centre.

Now the SPCA is trying to find the dog’s owner and how it got to the point that Willow came within a few heartbeats of death. “She has no identification to link her to an owner and we are seeking the public’s help in identifying who may be responsible for her,� B.C. SPCA senior

The young Siberian husky weighed only 15 kilograms, below a normal weight of 24 kg. “She has been assessed with a score of “one� on the canine body-conditioning scale of one to nine, meaning that she is severely malnourished.�

Once she was brought into the SPCA, Willow was taken to the Dewdney Animal Hospital, where she received around-theclock care.

She’s now back at the SPCA and gaining strength every day. “When she first came in, she was unable to lie down due to abdominal pain caused by rocks and soil in her gastrointestinal tract,� says Drever. “There were no food remnants in her stomach, so we think she was eating gravel to try to stay alive.�

Since she was brought in Saturday, she’s already gained a kilogram.

Rapid bus in Ridge is years away ‘No’ vote would delay projects 5-10 years

aple Ridge council Monday didn’t pull any punches as it pounded out questions to a trio of transit types promoting a yes vote in this spring’s transit referendum.

When will Maple Ridge actually see a B-line or rapid bus link to Coquitlam Central Station?

Is there really enough track time to allow expansion of West Coast Express commuter rail? And why isn’t there a bus to Mission?

A major worry was how long it would take to get a B-line/rapid bus service linking downtown Maple Ridge to the new SkyTrain line in Coquitlam.

“The target now is to get the rapid bus within three to five years. Two to three years is a long time for people, but it takes a long time to build buses,” said Mike Buda, executivedirector of the Mayor’s Council on Regional Transportation.

“We could possibly have those services up and running within three years of having a vote,” said TransLink vice-president Bob Paddon.

“The problem is, that we don’t have the vehicles.”

Council heard that without a yes vote, all the transportation projects planned for Metro Vancouver will be delayed by another five or 10 years.

If another referendum is held five years from now, it will take another five years to implement whatever’s approved.

Meanwhile, the region’s population will grow yearly by the equivalent of Port Coquitlam’s population.

Coun. Gordy Robson said TransLink has been talking about rapid bus service to Coquitlam from Maple Ridge for a decade.

“Why can’t we make that [rapid] bus next week?”

Robson pointed out that council had been given three different time frames Monday for when rapid bus would get to Maple Ridge; either within two years, two- to three-years or three to five years.

“You’re saying if we vote yes, there won’t be a rapid bus for three to five years?”

According to the Mayors’ Council, the arrival of rapid bus to Maple Ridge has yet another timeline.

However, in a statement two weeks ago, the Mayor’s Council reduced that period to two years.

Implementing a rapid bus system in Maple Ridge would cost about $8 million, Paddon said. “That would be on the street within three years.”

Tamim Raad, TransLink planning director, said it takes time to order the buses, create the right of way and take delivery of the buses.

He said the service, which will follow Lougheed Highway into Coquitlam Central Station, will use a mix of separate lanes, dedicated roadways, and signal priority using SkyTrain type stations to bring people from Maple Ridge to Coquitlam SkyTrain.

TransLink and the Mayor’s Council were trying to persuade council to back the yes side in this spring’s mail-in transit plebiscite.

Voters in Metro Vancouver will be asked between March 16 and May 29 to mail in ballots saying whether they say yes or to hiking the provincial sales tax to 7.5 per cent.

That will raise about $250 million a year to pay for a list of new transit services, including everything from more West Coast Express service, SkyTrain line extension to Arbutus

Street and light rail in Surrey and Langley.

Coun. Corisa Bell worried that the wait time for a rapid bus could coincide with a provincial election, which could upset the whole process.

“Is there a guarantee from TransLink that it will happen absolutely?”

And has West Coast Express worked out a deal for leasing more track time from CP Rail to allow the extra train?

Negotiations with CP Rail are underway, said Paddon.

However, if a yes vote is successful, the mayors council will require that TransLink follow the plan.

Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read wants to wait until she sees an implementation plan, which the Mayors’ Council is to write in the next few weeks, before reconsidering her opposition to the vote.

Read opposed the Mayor’s Council decision to seek permission for hike in the PST because it was downloading provincial responsibility, without giving authority, on to the mayors.

She’s also said she’ll vote no in the referendum.

“There’s a clear challenge with respect to [public] trust,” said Read.

What is TransLink doing to improve its reputation, she asked.

Paddon said that TransLink has found $200 million worth of savings

in the past three years, achieved by trimming administration, freezing salaries, and cutting some services.

The last increase in funding for the agency was in 2009.

One of the transportation priorities includes adding, within five years, an extra rush-hour train, morning and evenings, to the five West Coast Express trains that run from Mission to Vancouver.

“West Coast today is one of the best performing commuter rail systems in North America,” Paddon said. Very few systems can rival its low operating costs.

But the trains are starting to fill up and some stops finds people having to wait for the next train.

Bell said people wanted a mid-day train, but there’s not enough demand for that, council heard.

Coun. Craig Speirs also objected to municipalities taking the heat for raising taxes, which are provincial jurisdiction.

That’s been an ongoing debate at the Mayor’s Council, said Buda.

But mayors have decided they can either oppose it or get on with the process that’s being dictated to them by the senior government.

“This is the province’s choice. Until there’s a change in thinking or a change in government, there is no other choice.”

Council heard earlier that the mayors were able to come up with a regional transportation plan in a few months, while Toronto and Montreal have never been able to agree on a regional transit approach.

Buda said a yes vote would be historic and empower cities.

“A yes vote – changes the world,” he said.

“For the first time in Canadian history, a local government will have made a compelling case,” for raising taxes for a specific purpose, giving more power to that level of government.

Raising the PST from 7.0 to 7.5 per cent in Metro is estimated to cost the average household an extra $125 per year, while low-income households would pay about $50 more, beginning in early 2016.

While a skeptical Maple Ridge council heard the presentation, Surrey, Vancouver and other mayors kicked off their campaign for a yes vote at Vancouver’s Waterfront station.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson pitched the tax as a minimal cost – 35 cents a day per household – to deliver key upgrades ranging from a light rail network in Surrey, to a subway along Broadway, more SeaBus service and 11 new B-line/rapid bus express routes.

CP Rail is in the middle of a major project involving replacement of its steel rails and wooden ties along its line from Vancouver to Pitt Meadows.

But it didn’t tell that to those who run the West Coast Express, which uses the same railway line.

Delays due to the work caused the train’s on-time performance rating to drop to 87 per cent in January, the lowest since it began service in 1995.

Almost all delays to West Coast Express service in the past three months have been CP related, B.C. Rapid Transit Company president Doug Kelsey said in a letter to Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read. “WCE was not informed about the schedule for this work, but has recently learned that it will continue into April.�

SPCA investigating

Commuters, though, aren’t interested in the cause of the delays, they just want to get to work on time, said Read.

One woman told her she was two hours late for work one day. “I don’t think they necessarily care what the reasons are. They rely on service to get work every morning and they need to trust that the services are reliable.

To smooth over rough feelings, Doug Kelsey, president of the B.C. Rapid Transit Company, handed out coffee vouchers Tuesday morning to commuters, while pamphlets explaining the work were put on train seats.

Kelsey told the mayor he’s been in touch with CP Rail brass and said that speeding up West Coast Express service is the top priority.

CP Rail acknowledged in a Jan. 31 release that it could have been “more forthcoming about the potential for commuter delay during this process.�

It explained that repairing the tracks requires delaying trains

to create “track blocks,� which allows crews to work on a certain section of track under tight deadlines.

Most of the work is done outside of the morning and evening rushhour commutes, when the five West Coast Express trains run.

But sometimes the work Read encroaches on to West Coast Express times.

One day, m ai nt e n an c e equipment derailed on to the tracks, blocking the track completely. “This work, Kelsey while necessary, does not always go absolutely as planned,� Kelsey said. “Add into the mix a number of freight trains that need to get in and out of Lower Mainland ports on these same tracks and you can start to understand the challenge.�

Work will continue for the next two and a half months.

Read said she appreciated Kelsey’s efforts, adding she’ll keep peo-

ple up to date.

TransLink didn’t respond to an interview request.

Instead, it sent a copy of a generic letter that Kelsey left on the West Coast Express seats this week.

The letter doesn’t explain why the train was late but instead gives basic facts about Tr a n s L i n k and refers to delays on SkyTrain. “Like any other major transportation system in other cities, we will from, time to time, have minor, unavoidable service disruptions that cause short delays. “These service disruptions may have a short-term impact on our 95-per-cent ontime arrival rating for Expo and Millennium lines, but we stand by our overall numbers and the 7.6 out of 10 customer service satisfaction score (2013) based on independent review.

Life and death The Metro mayors’ council has no ‘Plan B’ if the transit referendum fails.

The group’s only solution is to fund needed transit improvements, such as more SkyTrain, adding light rail transit and more buses, is to bump up the provincial sale tax in the region by 0.5 per cent.

If the plan is approved, a B-line bus connecting Maple Ridge to SkyTrain in Coquitlam could be in place in two to three to five years.

So they say.

If the tax increase is not approved, then planned projects would take at least twice as long to implement, according to the mayors.

Their plan for transportation and transit improvements, with a million more people expected in the Metro region over the next 30 years, would reduce road congestion by 20 per cent.

Their plan would cost the average household $125 a year, or 35 cents a day.

A new four-lane bridge to replace the Patullo is also part of the plan, which aims to reduce the number of vehicles on roads.

And building a new bridge, as well as replacing the Massey Tunnel, as the province plans, will do that?

The Golden Ears and Port Mann bridges, with their tolls and lower than expected usage, are doing a fine job of reducing traffic congestion.

Do we need another empty toll bridge?

Why, if it’s so important to expand transit as the population of the Lower Mainland swells, won’t the provincial government fund it?

Why is it the responsibility of local mayors to find money for the plan?

They shouldn’t have to drive around the region selling their vision. Voters will support the plan if they think it’s fair. They don’t need to be pressured.

The mayors’ plan may be the best they can do under the current governance structure, but it is not fair, or sensible, and the referendum should fail.

The province needs to fix what is wrong with the multiple layers that govern transportation in the region, then devise a funding strategy that doesn’t tax one group of residents more than another, especially when the services are meant for all.

he shadowy parkade on the edge of Memorial Peace Park is a favorite gathering place for Maple Ridge street Along the Fraser people.

But, darkness doesn’t Jack Emberly matter like it used to.

The homeless, addicted, and mentally ill can be seen in daylight, sitting outside banks, coffee shops.

It wasn’t always that way. When I settled here 30 years ago, people didn’t wander streets, their possessions in shopping carts.

There weren’t darkly-clad BOBS – boys on bikes – hauling garbage bags to bottle depots, or wasted souls punching the air while shouting obscenities. This drastic social change needs to be redressed if towns like ours are to survive.

In downtown residences, health care workers bathe seniors for bed, administer medication. Once, they weren’t forced to walk past addicts shooting up in the doorways. The job has changed.

“It’s not a safe area,” one worker told me.

“Our vehicles are broken into. We never know what we’ll encounter.”

It’s folks struggling with a ‘dual diagnosis’.

“Just pitiful,” says this worker. “These people need support. They’re human beings.”

Dual diagnosis – addiction and mental illness – is the term used by drivers with West Ridge Security.

“It’s most of them,” one told me at the start of my ride-along, to learn about the street scene.

West Ridge Security patrols the commercial downtown for the Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association.

The parkade is our first stop.

“They’ll do drugs here, or just sleep,” says the driver. “Sometimes, someone builds a fire – to heat a can of beans, or stay warm. It’s dangerous. There’s a gas line here.”

Fires, and people shooting up aren’t good for business. West Ridge moves street folk along to ease the problem for any one shop owner. Usually this happens without argument, but sometimes, drivers are verbally abused, and often threatened, sometimes with knives.

We move onto 224th Street, down Dewdney Trunk Road to 228th Street, then south, along side streets and alleys before heading east on Lougheed Highway to another hot spot – the alley behind the bottle depot at the edge of the business district.

The homeless are everywhere with shopping carts, sitting on benches. The driver points out a man who talks to himself all day.

The area around 222nd Street and Selkirk Avenue attracts prostitutes. They move along when citizens complain, but come back.

On 224th St. again we check another alley.

Behind a restaurant, the driver points out dumpsters.

“Another place you’ll find people doing drugs, or sleeping.”

There’s nobody here, but we find a man asleep on the commercial parking lot opposite the school board office on Brown Avenue.

“I told him it was warmer in the sun,” reports the driver, “and where he can get a better rest.”

“It’s a sad picture,” I suggest.

Mayor Nicole Read says she’s committed to find effective strategies to address homelessness and addiction as soon as possible.

“We’re seeing more property crime,” she told me, “hearing from residents about needles in parks. There are people who fear for their safety. We need to address that. It’s the reason we’ve enacted a task force.”

The task force includes Read, Couns. Bob Masse and Gordy Robson.

Daryll Pilgrim, co-chair of the local Housing Planning Table, said in a recent article that there’s “a wide range of disorders our city doesn’t have answers for right now.”

Answers for a town’s survival will demand drastic changes. We’ll have to house people locally and treat their mental illness at home because they’re not going anywhere.

The task force reports publicly Feb. 10.

THE NEWS/letters ‘Pupils first’ Editor, The News: Re: MLA accepted BCTF cheque (The News, Jan. 30).

I would like to correct the record to erroneous statements in your article.

These are the facts. On January 21st my office was contacted by the BCTF who expressed their error in sending me a cheque and a T4 slip a month earlier in December.

As the funds were to address grievances from 2002 until the present and as I had been a teacher for seven of these years, I assumed that the BCTF had sent me a cheque proportionally based on the years I taught during this time.

I returned the BCTF’s call and said that I would return the full amount, which I did the same day by Express Post.

Under no circumstances did I dispute any so-called entitlement.

I accepted their mistake at face value and fully understood what transpired.

Yes, I was a teacher for 15 years in School District No. 42; and I am proud to have helped local students develop their minds as they’ve grown into adults.

Teaching is a wonderful and rewarding profession. This is why I am disappointed the Maple Ridge Teachers Association felt the need to speak with the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows News about their union’s error and somehow attempt to place blame on myself.

I will continue to stand-up for the best interests of students and their parents, along with teachers who put the needs of their pupils first.

Question about ambulances Editor, The News: Re: ‘Ambulances take too long’ (The News, Jan. 28).

There are two important messages in the article, both of which I agree totally.

One is ‘ambulances take too long’; the other is, “We have a great ambulatory care service”.

Unfortunately, neither has anything to do with the other.

Time is of the essence in a medical emergency, there is no doubt. For heart attack, trauma, stroke and many other patients, timely skilled medical intervention is critical and is often referred to as ‘The Golden Hour’.

For a stroke patient, that is the time from onset of symptoms to having a CT scan, including initial interpretation of the result.

My colleagues in the B.C. Ambulance service, fellow nurses, doctors and other medical staff do their best with a broken system.

Lack of available ambulances may be part of the problem meeting ‘the Golden Hour’ standard, but the other part is lack of paramedics to use those ambulances, including advanced life support paramedics.

Having single paramedic responders will help as a Band-Aid solution, but it is rather like painting over a crack in a wall.

The crack is still there and getting worse by the day.

MLA Marc Dalton is quite correct when he says that “we have a great ambulatory care system”. Mr. Dalton, as a former teacher, is no doubt aware of the importance of answering the question assigned for homework, saying what you mean and of checking your answer.

People attend the ambulatory care clinic for numerous reasons, including but not limited to intravenous antibiotics, blood transfusions, chemo therapy, replacing IV cannulas and many other medical procedures.

So, Mr. Dalton is quite correct. The only problem is that the article is actually about ambulance response times and not ambulatory care.

So, did Mr. Dalton do his homework? Did he say what he meant? Has Mr. Dalton answered the question or has he deliberately given a wrong answer?

Pig ad flies at Super Bowl Cinematographer wins $50,000

Winning a free trip to the Super Bowl is a great sporting experience, and getting $50,000 in the bargain is fantastic.

But the mind-blowing part of Sunday was Graham Talbot seeing his “When Pig’s Fly” ad run on the world’s biggest stage for advertising.

“The whole experience was ... you can’t put it into words” said the Maple Ridge cinematographer, who runs the fledgeling film company Talbot Twins Cinematography with his brother Nelson.

But he did a good job of putting it into words.

“When the spot aired, an atomic bomb of emotion blew up inside

my head,” is how he put it.

Talbot entered the Doritos Crash the Super Bowl contest, and his entry was one of the 10 finalists chosen from 5,000 from across the globe. As such, he won a trip to see the Seattle Seahawks take on the New England Patriots in Sunday’s epic Super Bowl.

He and the other nine finalists were set up with box seats on the Pats’ side of the field, Graham Talbot was rubbing elbows with the likes of British comedian Eric Idle, of Monty Python fame. He got a photo taken with novelist George R.R. Martin, who wrote Game of Thrones.

It was Talbot’s favourite, too, and won the audience online voting.

“There’s no shame in losing to his commercial,” Talbot said.

He and the other nine finalists had a long sweat, waiting until the fourth quarter to finally learn who was the runner-up, as chosen by the chip company itself.

He said they were a fun bunch to hang out with, and congratulatory when he won the next biggest prize.

“When Pigs Fly” is both the title, and what the boy in Talbot’s commercial was told when he asked a salty farmer for some chips. He sets about building a rocket to launch a porker. It was the choice of Doritos. Talbot said they loved it.

It was a heartbreaking game for those who watched Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson throw an inter-

ception, when his team was just a yard away from a game-winning touchdown.

But Talbot was flying high.

“I was supporting the Seahawks, but as the game was ending, I was fielding phone calls from friends and family.”

It’s a great piece for the Talbots’ resumes, and has to get the 25-yearold cinematographers some credibility as a true up-and-comers in a tough industry to break into.

“Getting a commercial out to 100 million people should do something,” he said.

His brother Nelson was there, too, but as the prize was for one person, he couldn’t be in the chip company’s box.

He was in the stands, though, with friends at the big game.

They can enter again, and Graham Talbot said he might team up with the person who helped him develop the visual effects for “When Pigs Fly” for next year’s contest.

“We’ll have to up our game again,” he said.

“Or maybe I’ll be so busy with new projects, that I won’t have time.”

‘No conflict’ Blue from front

But Mayor Nicole Read says the firing, a decision of council, had nothing to do with that.

“It was all about fit,” she said.

“We need to deliver a strong economy in Maple Ridge going forward. We need to make some changes in order to do that.”

Read said, in last year’s citizens’ survey, people wanted more jobs and more shopping in Maple Ridge. The city is now working on a change in economic development strategy and, therefore, wanted a new person to lead the four-person

economic development department.

“I think our direction will be very much aimed at deal closing,” said Read. “People have to know you exist in order to make a decision to invest here.”

Just before the November 2014 civic election, Coun. Corisa Bell wondered about Blue running for election in Abbotsford. How could Blue have the time to sit on Abbotsford council while managing Maple Ridge’s economic development, Bell asked in September.

Blue though said then she didn’t see any conflict.

As Maple Ridge’s manager of strategic economic initiatives,

Blue made $107,676 in 2013.

As one of eight councillors in Abbotsford, she’ll make about $37,500 a year, ($5,000 less than Maple Ridge councillors make.)

Blue said her work schedules didn’t conflict. Maple Ridge’s Monday morning council workshops, during which she sometimes gave presentations, start at 10 a.m., while Abbotsford committee meetings begin at 3 p.m.

Read said Blue’s severance will be determined by the city’s human resources department.

Council will be conducting a national search for a replacement.

the weapon that was used during the heist.

The suspect is described as a white male in his mid-20s, 5’4’’, with a slim build and blond hair.

He was last seen walking north toward Dewdney Trunk Road on Laity Street.

Police are also poring over security video and are optimistic they’ll identify a suspect.

A 17-year-old armed with a knife is lucky to be alive after an armed standoff with Ridge Meadows RCMP officers Monday afternoon.

Police answered a call about a disturbance in a condo building in the 11700-block of 207th Street, just before 2 p.m.

When they got there, the teen took off.

However, when one of the officers chased

after him, the teen had armed himself with a knife, “which he held in a very threatening manner toward police,� Cpl. Alanna Dunlop said in a release.

Police drew their guns and told the teen to drop the knife.

He hesitated briefly, then dropped the weapon.

Cops then tackled him and cuffed him.

The situation didn’t end there, however.

As he was being led to the police car he continued to struggle and spit at the police.

One of the officers had to go to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Police are recommending three charges of assaulting a peace officer. The youth’s name cannot be released under authority of the Young Offenders Act, Dunlop said.

Good hearing, poor comprehension?

The number of people who can hear well, but can’t understand what’s being said, is increasing. This is most evident in conversations and watching television. A newlydeveloped hearing chip is designed to restore speech comprehension without being noticeable in the ear.

A lot of people have poor comprehension, though they actually still hear well. It becomes noticeable in conversation, watching television and asking family to repeat what’s been said. A potential cause can be undetected loss in the high-frequency range. This means the sensory cells in the cochlea that hear high-range sounds are damaged as a result of circulatory disorders, diabetes, sudden hearing loss or workplace noise. Hearing loss in the highfrequency range makes speech sound muffled and unclear. The person with hearing loss mixes up, or can no longer hear, consonants like s, f, t, k, h and g.

Speech comprehension is particularly impaired when there is background noise or when television programs have background music. The dilemma is that people with hearing loss in the high-frequency range do not

Spring tips for the home

t seems like winter never really hit the Lower Mainland this year, with all the record-breaking warm temperatures. Yet spring is quickly approaching, and that means preparing your home for a new season.

From spring cleaning to spring maintenance, the busy season is almost upon us.

Planning your spring home chores list is a good way to ensure this spring is a productive one around the house and helps you save money on energy bills this summer, improve your home’s appearance and head off big-ticket repairs down the road.

A few tips to help you prepare your home for the warmer months: • Inspecting the air conditioner – for about $75-200, a technician will tune up your cooling system to manufacturer-rated efficiency and you won’t sweat the first hot weekend with an air conditioner that’s out of commission.

Dirty filters make air conditioners work harder, increasing energy costs and possibly damaging equipment.

Check them monthly and replace as needed, or at least every three months.

Technicians will check drains during a tuneup, as well.

• Putting temperature on autopilot – a programmable thermostat can save about $180 annually on cooling and heating bills, if you can live with higher indoor temperatures in summer and cooler temperatures in winter.

In summer, you can make those settings more tolerable if you install ceiling fans.

Just remember that a ceiling fan cools people, not a room, so turn it off when you leave the room.

• Caulking the cracks – if gaps around doors or windows are wider than a nickel, you’ll need to reapply exterior caulking. Check windowglazing putty, too, which seals glass into window frames.

Add weather stripping around doors, making sure that no daylight is visible from the inside.

You’ll save money on air conditioning and you won’t have to repeat this job in the fall.

• Cleaning gutters – decomposed leaves, twigs, and spring petals and seeds may be worse in spring than in the fall.

Among the tasks to be completed for spring: power washing your driveway and repairing your roof, including damaged shingles.

Gutter cleaning generally costs $90-225 for a 2,000-square-foot home with about 180 linear feet of gutter.

Extend downspouts to carry water three to four feet away from your home’s foundation, using four-inch corrugated plastic pipe.

• Repairing roof – inspect your roof for damaged, loose or missing shingles. You can use a pair of binoculars if that is safer.

If needed, hire a handyman to repair shingles but if damage is more extensive, you’ll need a roofer.

You’ll also want to check and repair breaks in flashing seals around vent stacks and chimneys.

Clean out any roof drains or openings in the wall that allow water to drain.

• Pressure washing – spring-clean your home’s exterior to remove accumulated dirt, mold and stains from siding, deck, sidewalks, driveway and garage floor, fences, and lawn furniture.

A rented pressure washer can set you back $40-75 a day for such a task.

• Washing windows – it’s only when windows are clean and the spring sun shines in that you’ll realize just how dirty the windows were.

A blade typically needs sharpening once or twice a year, or more often depending on how big your yard is and how frequently you mow.

You should also tune up your lawn mower after every 25 hours of use to increase its efficiency and reduce polluting emissions.

Change the spark plugs, oil and oil filter (or clean it).

A pro tune up will cost you upwards of $75, but you can do the job yourself for about $25 for oil and parts.

• Losing lint – even if you clean your clothing dryer’s lint trap before every use, the vent still accumulates lint over time like plaque in arteries.

A clogged vent can reduce the dryer’s efficiency and create a fire hazard.

The Internet and YouTube also provide guidance on these tasks.

Getting ahead of the game now can help make 2015’s spring one of the most enjoyable ever.

Before washing the glass, clean out the sills and window tracks with a soft brush or vacuum attachment.

Pour a small amount of water into the sill to ensure that weep holes, which drain rainwater to the exterior, aren’t clogged up.

And don’t forget window screens too as they accumulate dust and other pollutants.

• Repairing sidewalks and driveways – fix any breakdowns in concrete or asphalt before it worsens. You can patch or fill surface cracks, chips or flaking in concrete on your own, using cement-repair products available at local homeimprovement stores.

For deeper cracks, settling or sunken concrete, call a professional, whether a handyman or a concrete contractor.

Asphalt is harder to work with, so call a pro for that job.

To increase your driveway’s lifespan, have asphalt resealed every two to five years, depending on climate and wear patterns, and have concrete resealed every one to three years. You may be able to do the concrete work yourself.

55-year-old runner leads the Blaze

occer, hockey and softball are the kinds of sports that follow athletes from their childhood days into adulthood.

Track and field generally gets left behind, along with gymnastics and dodgeball.

But that’s not the case for the Martin-Brower Blaze, a sprint team from Maple Ridge that is now up and running.

The 2015 Harry Jerome Indoor Games will be run Feb. 7 at the Richmond Olympic Oval, and the hometown Blaze will be competing against university track teams.

The Blaze started with the ageless Bobby Lefever.

The local trucker tried out for a Washington State arena league football team in his late 40s.

He didn’t make his namesake, the Tri-Cities Fever, which plays out of Kennewick, Wash., but says he didn’t embarrass himself out there, either.

His son is a top-flight sprinter, and Lefever found that in a race he was only a step behind his boy.

Apparently, the guy who was once the fastest back on the James Bay rugby team hadn’t lost it yet.

“I had never done track and field before, and there’s so much science to it.”

Short arm movements, a straight torso, the proper stride, the right amount of training and rest – he immersed himself in sprinting, training three times per week, and working out at Club 16 on off days.

His workouts and passion for running soon rubbed off on guys he knows through work, and after

kicking around the idea for about six months, they formed a sprint team. Lefever is 55, and the rest of the guys on the Blaze are all 20-somethings.

MRSS grads Cody DiSaldo and Ty Lum were track athletes at the high school level and Jordan Crowe was a high school football player. Vancouver resident Hugh

Murray and Delta’s Kevin Zimmer round out the team.

“We push each other to be better,” said Lefever.

They will compete this weekend in the 60m individual races. Lefever will compete in an over-35 age class, and his goal is to make the final eight.

The team will also compete in the 4x200m relay, each of them sprinting 50m.

Generally speaking, the people training seriously in sprints are university-level athletes, with goals like trying to make the national team, and that’s who they will be up against on Saturday.

“I think we’ll do well,” said Lefever. “It’s a huge accomplishment for us just to have a team.”

Some of the Blaze members have got some chops as athletes.

Lum has a long history of track training, having been with the Golden Ears track club and local coach Ken Elphick. In Grade 11, Lum finished sixth in B.C. in the 100m sprint.

The training has become a habit.

“I never really stopped training. I came out to the track on my own a lot. And now I’m picking it up again with Martin-Brower, officially joining a team again. So it’s fun, and it’s exciting,” Lum said.

His goals are simply to improve his stamina, and his pace.

Butterfly style can cause injuries

B

utterfly-style goaltending in the NHL seems to have been with us forever, but it did have its origins in the 1960s and ’70s, first with Glenn Hall, who used it sporadically, and then Tony Esposito who popularized it as his ubiquitous style.

Its use declined until Patrick Roy brought it back in a big way, and since then virtually all goalies use an exclusive butterfly style or at least a hybrid of styles including butterfly. It’s successful at stopping pucks and controlling rebounds especially with low shots, screens and scrambles around the net.

Unfortunately, with the advantages in stopping pucks comes the disadvantage of stressing the joints, ligaments and muscles in the lower body.

There have been numerous stories in the media about injuries resulting from the use of the butterfly style. Now some of the pioneers of the style are getting a bit older they are experiencing problems in their joints, premature degenerative changes, pain and mobility problems.

Typical lower body injuries that can occur include knee ligament sprains and tears, cartilage tears, groin muscle tears, sports hernia and abdominal pulls.

One of the overlooked injury spots is the hip joint itself. The ligaments and capsule that surround the hips are large and strong as are most of the muscles.

However, the rotator muscles in the hip are much smaller in relation to other muscles and the load they are subjected to is great. The external hip rotators are perpetually stretched out and loaded and take a real beating. And despite the size and strength of the capsule, labrum and ligaments they can be injured too because of the load, torque and frequency of the movement.

Another problem that can be encountered is that not everyone has

perfectly shaped hip ball and socket. If the socket has a little extra boney prominence on the rim or is too deep, the ball can jam into the socket and cause pain in the front of the hip.

The ball itself can have extra bone formation on the front of the neck of the head of the femur, which can jam into the rim of the socket causing the same anterior hip pain.

Any of these situations can result in a hip impingement (or AI – acetabular impingement) and will often manifest in a sharp groin pain, which is made worse with quick

ROULEAU, Henri (Henry) Joseph Henri (Henry) Joseph Rouleau passed away peacefully on January 18, 2015. He was surrounded by family and love.

Henry was born in Beaumont, Alberta on December 10, 1927 to Adelard and Marie-Ange (nee Nadeau) Rouleau.

Survived by siblings Remi (Claire), Rene and Rolland (Doris), his wife Doris Mae Rouleau (nee Bird), his step children, son Jacques and grandson Jason. He is predeceased by his mother, father, big sister Therese, brothers Georges and Andre. He was a wonderful man, husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Doris, their children, many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be held in Kelowna, BC in May 2015.

He is solitaire and crosswords, western novels and walks along the lake, he is porridge in the morning and ice cream at night.

MELLOF, Lilianne Louise (nee Vermette) Aug. 29, 1925 - Jan. 26, 2015 It is with peace and sadness that the family of Lil would like to share the news of her passing. She was surrounded by her family as she peacefully passed on Jan. 26, 2015 in her 90th year. She has joined the love her life Bud, predeceasing her in 1997. Lil’s family was her rea-

son for everything. She leaves to mourn her 3 children, Cheryl, Robert and Joe, daughters-inlaw Inga and Shelley. Gram was so special to Jennifer, Brandy, Julianne and Josh, and GG to Alissa, all of Maple Ridge. Lil will be missed by many, many nieces & nephews.

Lil was one of nine children, born and raised in Payton, Sask, later moving to Fort William (Thunder Bay) where she met and married Bud in 1946.

A few years later they moved west, settling in Haney, B.C. where they made their home.

In that time, as well as being a busy mother, Lil held a variety of jobs. She was Haney’s first female gas jockey when she and Bud opened Bud’s Service in 1959, she worked at the Stardust Roller Rink in Surrey, sold real estate in Maple Ridge and was a mail carrier for Canada Post.

Lil had a calm confidence in life and taught her family what unconditional love was. She always gave of herself and anything to do with her children was of the utmost priority. She loved music & dancing, cards & board games, cribbage and pool, and always had some knitting on the go. Her favorite times were camping with her grandchildren while whipping up a batch of Grams famous pancakes.

Lil was a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a great grandmother, an aunt, a niece, a cousin....and a few that were lucky enough to call her a friend.
