Bargain hunters descend on Target YOU’RE GOING TO LOVE LIVING HERE.

A queue roughly 50-people-long awaited Kelowna’s Target employees Thursday morning as they opened doors for the first day of the company-wide liquidation, and the flow of bargain hunters didn’t abate as the day wore on. “I was here at 8:15 a.m., and the parking lot was full,” said Kimberly Ferguson, as she lined up to buy some discounted goods.

“Eventually I found a spot in the far corner, but it was busy.” It was the most action the store has seen since it opened July 2013, said Ferguson, noting that back then there were people “conducting” shoppers into line-ups. Business in Kelowna dried up a fair bit from those early days, but not nearly as much as it did elsewhere in the country. “I’ve actually been told by one of the cashiers that this is one of the stores that made money,”

Ferguson said. That won’t stop the estimated 150 local employees from losing their jobs, however. Although no firm closing day has been set, the company gave employees 16 to 20 weeks notice that they’d be shutting down operations nationwide. Thursday marked the first day of the sale aimed at reducing inventory.
