The Langley community has rallied around a Willoughboy diagnosed with brain cancer last year. Family and friends raised a whopping $36,000 in one night in January to help the family.

Owen Dumansky is a two-and-a halfyear-old who is ‘full of beans,’ said his mom, Joanne MacNeil.

In January 2014, Owen (18 months old at the time) and his mom were at his older brother Jacob’s skating lesson.

“Out of nowhere Owen lost his balance and then started vomiting what felt like nonstop,” said Joanne. “We took him to

emergency and after giving him some medicine to calm his tummy he seemed to perk up.”

They were told it was likely an inner ear infection. Less than a week later Owen was at BC Children’s Hospital.

Fraser Health is also on track to end the year almost right on its $3.3-billion budget at the end of March, perhaps with a very thin surplus.

Cost control allowed the region to increase the number of surgeries and MRI scans it performs until the fiscal year finishes at the end of March.

The Township of Langley won’t be participating in the debate over a proposed transit improvement tax for Metro Vancouver.

Councillor Angie Quaale convinced a majority of council Monday (Feb. 2) to agree that the Township should spend no money or staff time trying to convince residents how to vote later this year in a referendum on hiking the provincial sales tax by half a percentage point.

Quaale said Vancouver and Surrey were spending “a lot of time and money” on transit tax campaigns that would be better spent in on other things.

The council vote approving the neutrality policy passed 5-4, with Councillors Quaale, Blair Whitmarsh, Charlie Fox, Michelle Sparrow and Mayor Jack Froese in favour, while Councillors Petrina Arnason, Kim Richter, David Davis and Bob Long were opposed.

Richter thought a decision on the idea should be delayed until council had an opportunity to hear representatives of the yes and no sides make presentations to council later this month.

“Members of the public might want council to take a stand,” Richter said.

Councillor Blair Whitmarsh thought a hands-off approach made the most sense.

“A position of no position is a good position for this council to take,” Whitmarsh said.

While the Township won’t be taking an official position one way or the other on the tax, Mayor Froese has been campaigning for the yes side.

Froese and his Langley City counterpart Ted Schaffer were among the majority of Metro Vancouver mayors who voted 18-3 to hold a referendum on hiking the provincial sales tax within the region by 0.5 per cent to fund a $7.5-billion package of transit upgrades.

It is the first Canadian referendum on transit funding.

If approved, the increase to the sales tax would cost the average Metro household about $125 a year.

Two men face charges in fraudulent business scheme Two company executives, including a 46-year-old Langley man, of the Surrey-based Aggressive Roadbuilders are facing charges in relation to a fraudulent business scheme which allegedly involved numerous false and misleading operating claims.

the president, Matthew Gregory Brooks, 47, of Surrey, and the controller/bookkeeper, Kirk Dennis Roberts, of Langley. Both men are facing charges of fraud over $5,000 and are due back in court Feb. 13.

The investigation began in 2009 when the RCMP Federal Serious and Organized

Crime unit (FSOC) received information from a financial institution about exaggerated and over-inflated financial documents associated to a business line of credit for Aggressive Roadbuilders.

“Significant fraud investigations like this rely on the comprehensive analysis

of all financial records. They are intensely time-consuming for all involved, including police, businesses and government agencies, and the costs incurred must ultimately be absorbed elsewhere within our economy,” said RCMP Insp. Brian Gateley of FSOC.

There, Owen’s parents were given the devastating news that their baby boy had a tumour in his brain.

He was rushed into surgery to remove the egg-sized mass.

Doctors managed to get it all, she said, but pathology came back confirming it was a rare form of brain cancer called ependymoma.

Because Owen is so young, doctors didn’t want to do radiation but chemotherapy’s success rate on this type of tumour is only about 40 per cent.

In the end, the team of doctors at BCCH decided to monitor Owen through MRIs.

By September, the tumour had returned.

After more appointments at BCCH it was recommended that they try proton beam radiation.

Since the treatment is not available in Canada the family had to go to the U.S. It was covered under MSP. “Owen and I went to Seattle for six weeks. He started treatment on Nov. 12 and finished Dec. 24,” said Joanne. Owen’s dad, Eric, and five-year-old brother, Jacob, visited often as Joanne and Owen stayed at the Ronald McDonald House there.

The family can’t say enough about the team at the Seattle hospital and the care he received.

“Owen did amazing. They made this experience less stressful for us and fun for Owen,” she said. “Owen is such a tough, brave little guy who is loved so much. To see him you would never know what he has been through.”

On Dec. 31, the family returned to Seattle for Owen’s graduation from radiation ceremony.

“It was the perfect way to end 2014,” she said.

In the meantime, family friend Leanna Kemp organized a fundraiser to support Owen in his fight against this horrible cancer. Kemp’s daughter is the same age as Owen and the two are friends.

The hope, said Kemp, was to have family and friends come out to a fundraising night to be held at The Loft on Jan. 17.

“We were expecting maybe to see 150 people. The event grew to over 300 tickets sold, many auction items donated and we’ve had to close the venue to the public as it’s at capacity,” said Kemp.

“The outcome has already far surpassed what we thought we could accomplish.”

The evening raised more than anyone could have dreamed, with twoonie tosses, 100 auction items, wine raffle and everyone’s collective desire to help Owen and his family get through this difficult time, easing any financial burdens they incurred while stopping work and life to focus on their son, said Kemp.

On Sunday (Jan. 25), Kemp

was able to hand a $36,070 cheque to the Dumanskys at a dinner celebration.

“We are humbled and so blessed to have so many incredible people in our lives,” said Joanne. “We are very fortunate that Owen is doing so well.”

Going forward Owen will be monitored with MRIs every three months for the next two years, then every six months.

After the age of five, he only has to be checked once a year.

“The support we have received from our family, friends, coworkers and community (Jacob’s school Richard Bulpitt Elementary and the attached Country Bumkins daycare) has been incredible,” she said.

In this year, both Joanne and Eric say it is Owen who has taught them the most.

“He has taught us to laugh lots, enjoy everyday and live life to the fullest,” she said.

Career criminal gets four years

The driver of a Toyota Tercel has only minor injuries but there is nothing left of his vehicle, which became trapped underneath a semi truck on 200 Street on Tuesday morning.

The driver, a 34-year-old Pitt Meadows man, was heading south on 200 Street around 5 a.m. when he tried to make a left onto 92A Avenue.

He slammed into a semi and the vehicle became jammed underneath the wheel well.

The driver of the semi kept driving to the truck yard before being told by police he had been in an accident.

While the car is a write-off, the driver suffered only hand and ankle injuries, said police.

Career criminal Chadwick Walter Ross, 39, was sentenced to four and a half years, minus 19 months’ credit for time already served in jail, for his role in robbing a man, possessing stolen property in a Langley storage unit, as well as carrying loaded guns.

Ross was sentenced on Dec. 16, 2014 by Provincial Court Judge Michael Hicks in Surrey. This will be Ross’s first federal sentence since his life in crime started in 1994.

He pleaded guilty to robbing a man in Langley in November 2013, and possessing stolen

A planned $20 million worth of seismic upgrades to Langley Secondary is not going to happen, confirmed Superintendent Suzanne Hoffman at last Tuesday’s Langley Board of Education meeting.

“There is very little appetite by the community to do the seismic upgrades,” Hoffman said. “Staff are no longer exploring that.”

But what district staff are exploring is the feasibility of ‘right-sizing’ LSS — building a smaller high school there and attaching it to newer portions of the school, like the gym and trades wing.

The district is able to use the province’s committed $20 million for seismic upgrades toward a new school in Langley.

Police put Ross under surveillance, and arrested him at a Langley gas station a few days later where he was found with a bag containing a .357

semi-automatic handgun with a bullet loaded in the chamber and eight more bullets in the magazine.

At the time of the search, Ross said he bought the stolen property from Lauzon to support his drug habit.

His convictions began in 1994.

He has struggled with cocaine, crack cocaine and methamphetamine addiction since a young age. His addiction has fueled his criminal activity.

With over a year in custody, Ross is now clean and addressing his recovery.

He apologized for his crimes during his sentencing.

The attitude towards marijuana in this province is in sharp contrast with the approach in other parts of Canada.

Proof of that comes in details from a court document, filed as part of an application to seize a property near the Aldergrove border crossing which was the subject of a massive search last week.

Although the large property just drew public attention last week, the documents suggest it has been used for marijuana production since 1993. That’s a 22-year period.

It is mportant to keep in mind that, in 1993, growing and selling marijuana for any purposes was illegal in Canada. While there were advocates for medicinal marijuana, which has since been allowed, growing, selling and using the product could lead to criminal charges.

Yet as the documents suggest, there was plenty of marijuana being grown in Langley (and other parts of B.C.) at that time. Some was for local consumption, and some was truly for medicinal purposes. However, the vast majority was grown for shipment to the U.S. and other countries, often in return for other drugs or guns.

B.C. residents have had a more laissez-faire attitude towards marijuana since the late 1960s, and a willingness to put up with marijuana growing, if not actively partaking in what has been a big business, has been strong for many years.

Could any other province have been so receptive to marijuana activist Marc Emery who, after serving several years in a U.S. jail, is encouraging American marijuana users to come here and buy their supply — even though it remains illegal to sell it, except for medicinal purposes?

It seems likely that, if the legalization of marijuana in Washington and Colorado turns out to be successful, marijuana will be legalized throughout North America some day.

If that does happen, B.C. marijuana activists, and the laissez-faire attitude that so many B.C. residents have, will have played a major role.

We don’t have to tell anyone on the West Shore that last Tuesday night’s shooting incident in Langford is the second violent crime against a person in less than two weeks in the area.

Residents, business owners and workers have been buzzing about both crimes, both in person and on social media.

It leads us to once again ask, how safe is Langford these days?

The shooting took place in a home near the Langford-Colwood border of Jacklin Road, a short drive from where a man was stabbed Jan. 14 on Station Road. He ultimately died in hospital from his wounds. It’s also a short walk from where a woman was dragged down the Galloping Goose Regional Trail and sexually assaulted in the wee hours of a summer morning last year.

Now, police investigations have told us that both the stabbing and the shooting incidents appear to be non-random acts of violence between people engaged in unsavoury activities; a.k.a. “they were all known to police.”

But does that make people feel any more safe about their surroundings?

Asked what they might tell residents worried about the recent violence, West Shore RCMP assured the public that Langford remains a safe community and that the unrelated nature of the crimes does not lead police to think otherwise.

Logically, that makes sense. Stay away from potentially dangerous situations or people and you’ll have no problem keeping safe. Unfortunately, not everyone thinks logically in the wake of violent crime.

If the victim in Tuesday’s shooting does not survive, it’ll give Langford the lead in crime-related deaths for 2015 with two. That’s two more than any other jurisdiction in Greater Victoria.

No matter what the police say, violence has once again found its way to Langford and people will think a little differently about the area.

Answers provided on recycling in the City Editor: Re: “Residents need answers on recyclables” (The Times, Jan. 27).

It is important to clarify a few points in the letter “Residents need answers on recyclables.” Multi-Material BC (MMBC) assumed direct responsibility for collecting recycling in City of Langley on Jan. 1, and has an agreement with Emterra Environmental to collect recyclables from residents’ curbsides.

When collecting recycling in the City of Langley, Emterra regularly uses trucks with three compartments: one for paper, one for containers, and one for glass.

Emterra used a two-compartment truck for a few days in mid-January after experiencing technical issues with the three-compartment truck.

The two-compartment truck was a temporary measure while the three-compartment truck was repaired. When recyclables are sorted into these three streams, we can ensure that more of the materials that are collected are successfully recycled. By moving to multi-stream recycling collection, we hope to improve performance and reduce the cost of your community’s recycling program.

Finally, it is important to clarify that MMBC’s packaging and printed paper recycling program is completely financed by the businesses that supply these materials to residents.

Hospital on the hill will mark 50 years, Feb. 21 Editor: To those of us who were around in 1965, the singular most important event to take place in Langley up until that time seems like it happened only yesterday.

We were still listening to the top hits from the previous year when the Beatles were lamenting their Hard Day’s Night and Louis Armstrong was saying hello to Dolly.

And in 1965 Petula Clark topped the music charts with her new hit, Downtown.

Here in Langley, the focus was not downtown but uptown.

On top of Hospital Hill, the Langley Memorial Hospital Planning Committee were putting in their own hard days and nights as they finalized the plans for the official opening of a new hospital.

And now, 50 years later, another committee is planning two events to mark the anniversary of that building now known as the South Tower.

On Saturday, Feb. 21, the LMH South Tower Anniversary Committee will host an afternoon tea in the hospital for all staff, past and present.

The committee is endeavouring to contact everyone who, at some time, has been employed at LMH from the opening of the cottage in 1948

Here come the garage police Editor: I see where a new townhome project in Yorkson will be approved by Langley Township, with 50 per cent more parking stalls than required under the current regulations. Strange as this may seem, about 15 years ago the planners across the GVRD reduced the number of stalls required in both commercial and residential projects by about this same margin of 50 per cent.

This was done on the premise if we did not provide the parking stalls, people would use other types of transportation, such as transit, bikes or walking. I guess that experiment did not work.

I am writing though about the new restriction, as to the legally binding promise not to store anything other than a car or truck. My goodness, where will it end?

We have the suite police and the tree police, and now we will have the garage police. I think we are losing sight of the original goal, which is to provide affordable shelter for the masses.

Enormous potential in B.C.’s mining sector Editor: Our province’s mineral exploration and mining sectors have generated some $700 billion in economic activity over the past 150 years, and along the way B.C. has become a global centre for mineral and coal exploration and development.

But there is enormous potential for even more investment, good jobs and revenue in B.C. from exploration and mining.

We should always remember that mineral and coal resources in our province are typically owned by the Crown, which means that we all benefit from their development (First Nations included).

We have benefited over for the past 150 years of mining and mineral exploration in this province.

The jobs, opportunities and economic potential are literally sitting there wait-

ing for us to take the next step and make the next 150 years even more successful than the previous 150.

B.C. is incredibly blessed with mineral and coal resources, and there are many programs and grants available to train the women and men of British Columbia to help them break into the mining sector.

In fact, I am amazed at the training re-

sources available and surprised that more young people are not taking advantage of them.

New mining projects and ongoing mineral development bring opportunity and jobs to our province, all of which can help to meet the social and economic demands of our growing population.

The Fair Share Food Services Society has closed both Langley storefront distribution centres, the result of bad press and interference with suppliers, according to Society founder Kelly Fowler.

“We were driven out of business,” Fowler told The Times recently.

The Aldergrove store at 27117 Fraser Hwy. closed in September and the Langley City store at 5765 203A St. closed in November, he said.

Fowler said Fair Share will continue to collect food for distribution to local charities, but the non-profit has been forced to abandon selling low-cost food to low-income people.

“We’ve had to change our direction because we’re under attack,” Fowler said.

“We’re not doing any retail.”

Fowler said some suppliers stopped donating food and other products to Fair Share because of negative news coverage and lobbying by rivals.

He said the controversy was creating too much stress for himself and the other volunteers he says all worked without getting salaries (although expenses were covered).

“It got to be too much of a burden,” Fowler said.

Fowler said the shutdown has stranded 800 Fair Share clients.

One former volunteer, Virginia Mary, posted a statement on Facebook decrying the shutdown.

“I am a single mom who is going to college and working [at] Fair Share literally saved my life,” Mary wrote.

Most of the controversy concerned a door-to-door food-collecting campaign called Operation Clean Out Your Pantry that dropped off paper bags with a note requesting donations of non-perishable foods and canned goods.

Food banks and charities in Abbotsford, Maple Ridge and Surrey objected, saying Fair Share was wrongfully claiming to have their support.

In 2012, when Fowler was just starting out and operating as the Fraser Valley Grocery Resource Society, he ran afoul of the Abbotsford Community Services’ (ACS) Food Bank.

The food bank complained the grocery bag note was misleading because Fair Share was saying “we support the local food banks� and that would make people think ACS was operating the program.

At the time, Fowler told the Abbotsford News the bag campaign would be halted in Abbotsford.

In 2014, the bag campaign attracted flak in Maple Ridge and Surrey.

Youth Unlimited, a group that operates an in-school breakfast program in Maple Ridge, complained it was misleading of Fair Share to say it supported Youth Unlimited.

Dennis Hemminger, the area director of Youth Unlimited, said his organization was not associated with Fair Share. “They shouldn’t be soliciting outside their area,� Hemminger said.

Fowler told the Maple Ridge News it was a mistake that had been dealt with. “We’ve got it all straightened out,� Fowler said.

When Fair Share donation bags appeared in a Cloverdale neighbourhood, it prompted criticism by Marilynn Herrmann, executive director of the Surrey Food Bank.

Herrmann told the Cloverdale Reporter newspaper that organizations like Fair Share are “popping up all over the place� and are not affiliated with the food bank. “We do not barter, trade or sell donated food,� Herrmann said, adding the food bank also doesn’t canvass door-to-door.

A 64-year-old Langley man said to be a spiritual leader in the South Asian community has been charged with human smuggling In December 2014, Joga Singh Badwal was formally charged under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. He faces one count of smuggling 10 or more persons and one count of failing to bring persons for examination upon entering Canada.

It is alleged that Badwal used his status as a spiritual leader within the South Asian community to assist other South Asians to gain entry into Canada.

Police say it was a lengthy and complex investigation by “E” Division RCMP Federal and Serious Organized Crime (FSOC, formerly known as Border Integrity Program).

The investigation began in 2010 after the RCMP became aware of some illegal cross-border move-

In partnership with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. Border Patrol, and Canada Border Services Agency, an investigation was launched focusing on the involvement of Badwal.

“Human smuggling revolves around the facilitation of illegal entry into Canada,” said Insp. Cal Chrustie of FSOC. “Criminals demand large fees in exchange for providing assistance to individuals wishing to enter our country. Province agrees to blend transit tax with PST JEF F N AGEL Bl ack Pre s s

The proposed 0.5 per cent sales tax for transportation improvements — if passed by voters in a referendum this spring — will simply be added to the seven per cent PST on receipts instead of adding an extra line and more headaches for businesses.

B.C. Transportation Minister Todd Stone outlined the change in a letter to Metro Vancouver mayors over the weekend.

It will still be known as the Metro Congestion Improvement Tax but would not be displayed as a distinct third tax on bills or require complex adjustments for businesses.

“Consumers would see a com-

bined PST and MCIT totalling 7.5 per cent at the point of sale,” Stone said. “We would not require businesses to separately identify the MCIT on receipts or invoices.”

Stone was responding to business complaints about the extra complexity that an additional tax line was going to create.

The Retail Council of Canada last week said it would oppose the referendum unless the province agreed to harmonize the new tax with the PST so it doesn’t become a separate tax and burden for business.

Retail council spokesman Greg Wilson said the tax threatened to create a “dramatic increase in red tape.”

Stone said the new tax, if ap-

proved, will mirror the tax base of the PST as much as possible, unless Metro mayors want additional exemptions.

Metro mayors originally proposed a simple 0.5 per cent increase to the PST, but the province had indicated it would instead be a separate tax with its own name applying to the “majority” of transactions subject to PST. B.C. Chamber of Commerce president John Winter said the province’s decision addresses the concerns of small businesses that they would have shouldered a significant new cost and administrative burden.

“This announcement removes this concern entirely,” he said.

The Eric Flowerdew Volunteer Award recognizes a volunteer who promotes an active living lifestyle that enhances residents’ quality of life through creative, cultural, physical, or social pursuits, promotes traditional and non-traditional recreation activities, and enhances Langley’s community spirit.

The John and Muriel Arnason Award is presented to a volunteer couple who advocate culture, learning, and literacy, foster partnerships and cooperative efforts, and create the potential for long-term benefits to the Langley community.

A $750 monetary award will be presented to a recognized charity or society chosen by the winners of the Eric Flowerdew Volunteer Award and the John and Muriel Arnason Award.

By 2001 Iker had left the classroom to work for the Burns Lake teacher union local, which the BCTF continues to staff eight years after that school district and others disappeared through amalgamation.

Langley’s International Festival Society’s fifth annual Multicultural Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony held at the Langley Golf and Banquet Centre is being hailed as a success by organizers, both in attendance and nominations.

Dignitaries who gathered to celebrate cultural diversity in the community included Township of Langley mayor Jack Froese, who was joined by councillors Angie Quaale and Petrina Arnason, as well as City of Langley deputy mayor Jack Arnold and City councillors Paul Albrecht, Gayle Martin and Rudy Storteboom.

Representing the Langley School District was trustee Rosemary Wallace.

The Township was also represented by cultural services manager Peter Tulumello, libraries manager David Thiessen, and Muriel Arnason Library’s community librarian Dr. Sarwan Singh Randhawa.

The society received several nominations in each of the four categories — Youth, Seniors, Education, and Community Ser-

vices Diversity awards.

Nasheman Waheed was awarded in the ‘Youth’ category for her volunteer work with the Settlement and Integration Services at the Langley Community Services Society. She facilitates youth and children’s programs, and represents the organization at cultural fairs.

Geoffrey Metcalfe, a retired school teacher, won the award in the ‘Senior’ category for being instrumental in teaching the literacy and language skills to the Karen seniors group at the Langley Community Services Society.

Immigrant Services Society of BC (ISSofBC) has been awarded the diversity award in the ‘Education’ category for providing assistance to immigrants and refugees through a variety of programs and services including language education, job search assistance, training, mentoring from professionals in different fields, and community connections support.

The Boys and Girls Club of South Coast BC was the winner for the ‘Community Services’

Award. The Boys and Girls Club of Langley provides a safe, supportive place where children and youth from different backgrounds and nationalities can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships, and develop confidence and skills for life.

The sponsors were also recognized for their contribution to the Langley’s International Festival and the Langley Canada Day celebrations.

The program opened with the national anthem, led by John Spence.

The Jorge Leyton Band group and the Portalatango (Tango Dancers) entertained throughout the event.

Vancouver’s largest free seminar for new home buyers Looking to buy a home at any stage of life can be intimidating as much as it is exciting, especially for first-time homebuyers.

How do operating costs of home ownership impact purchasing decision? What role do lawyers play in the closing process? If homebuyers opt to buy new, what sort of warranty should the home have?

“The goal of most home buyers is to buy a well built home for the right price: no more, no less. The trick

is finding a deal that meets your expectations,” says de Wit. “There is a wealth of information out there – especially online -- about buying a new home. Under Haugen’s leadership to date, KPU hosted the Industry Training Authority (ITA) Apprentice Job Match Tool launch, which connects apprenticeship-seeking trades students with local employers. Plans to expand KPU’s programming to support B.C.’s Skills for Jobs Blueprint are also underway.

Spartans stretch streak ELEVEN STRAIGHT VICTORIES FOR MEN’S VOLLEYBALL TEAM

After spotting the opposition a lead on both nights, the Trinity Western Spartans battled back to extend their Canada West winning streak to 11 matches.

The Spartans were hosting the Saskatchewan Huskies over the weekend at the Langley Events Centre.

The Spartans men’s volleyball team — ranked third in the country — improved to 18-4 and clinched a home playoff date in the process and they are one game back of firstplace Alberta with two games remaining in the regular season.

“It was a greasy win. It was never smooth, but that’s a credit to Saskatchewan,” said TWU coach Ben Josephson.

“They made it hard on us and kept the pressure on us serving wise. They’re big, physical guys and they made it hard to score.

“I thought our guys found a way to win on a bad night; we made just enough plays and (ground) it out.”

The Huskies took the first two sets 25-23 and 25-21 before TWU stayed alive with a 25-18 win in set three and 25-18 in set four. The decisive set was 15-12 for the Spartans.

Ryan Sclater (18 kills, three

aces, 10 digs), Nick Del Bianco (14 kills, eight digs) and Blake Scheerhoorn (11 kills, five blocks) led the attack. Branden Schmidt had a match-high six blocks and Tyler Koslowsky had a match-high 11 digs. Adam Schriemer had 43 assists.

In Friday’s opener, Saskatchewan won the opener 25-22 before the Spartans stormed back with 25-20, 25-14 and 25-19 victories.

A big turnaround was the fact the team made just six attack errors over the final three sets, hitting .478 as a team.

Del Bianco had a season-high 23 kills, while hitting .583 and also collecting four blocks and two aces.

Daniel Grant had a matchhigh eight blocks as the Spartans out-blocked the Huskies 17-3.

The Spartans close the regular season with a pair of games in Winnipeg against the Wesmen this weekend.

••• The Trinity Western Spartans women’s volleyball team made quick work of the Saskatchewan Huskies, winning in straight sets both nights at the Langley Events Centre.

The fifth-ranked Spartans improved to 17-5 on the season

and head into the final weekend of Canada West conference play in a three-way tie for top spot.

TWU won 25-19, 25-15 and 25-20 on Friday and 25-8, 25-19 and 25-15 on Saturday.

Head coach Ryan Hofer was impressed by his team’s attack prowess, especially the second night when they hit .359 compared to -.149 for the Huskies.

“We blocked well and we followed a game plan tonight just a little bit better than last night and it really gave us opportunities to score points with our block or, at least, recycle it and bang it back.”

Royal Richardson led the way with 13 kills and six blocks, Alicia Perrin added 11 kills and six blocks, Lauren Moncks led the team with 22 assists while also collecting four blocks. Kristen Moncks had a team-high eight digs.

In Friday’s match, Sophie Carpentier led the team with 13 kills and four aces. Elly Wendel and Alicia Perrin each contributed nine kills while Perrin also delivering a match-high five blocks. And Katelyn Devaney had seven kills while hitting .600 for the match.

The Spartans are on the road in Winnipeg this weekend to close the regular season. The team can finish anywhere from first to third depending on the weekend’s results.

Buys hat trick leads Spartans

A hat trick and four points from PJ Buys paced the Trinity Western Spartans to a seventh-straight victory.

The Spartans hockey team doubled up the Eastern Washington Eagles 6-3 on Friday night at the Langley Events Centre.

The victory was the team’s fourth straight win by three goals or more.

“From a systems standpoint, I think we are doing a good job,” said TWU coach Barret Kropf, whose

Everything went right for the Valley West Hawks last weekend.

Not only did the major midget team sweep the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds, they gained ground on two rivals in what has now become a four-team race for second place. After their two triumphs, the Hawks have improved to 17-9-6 and their 40 points has them well within range of second place.

Valley West scored 14 goals against the Thunderbirds, winning by scores of 7-4 Saturday in Abbotsford and 7-6 Sunday at the Langley Events Centre.

“At times, it was a shooting gallery,” said Hawks head coach Jessie Leung. “We showed why we are one of the top scoring teams in the league this year.

Our team executed our game plan, plain and simple.”

While Saturday was a well-executed game, Sunday was a different story as the team trailed 3-1 after one period.

Tardi takes mixed doubles title Tyler Tardi teamed with Dezaray Hawes of the Royal City Curling Club to win the mixed doubles provincial championship over the weekend at the Peace Arch Curling Club.

Tardi, a Cloverdale resident and a member of the Langley Curling Club, will now compete with Hawes at the mixed doubles curling trials March 11 to 15 in Ottawa.

If successful at that event, the pair would qualify for the world championships in Sochi, Russia.

Tardi/Hawes defeated the duo of Daniel Wenzek and Sarah Daniels 7-6 in Sunday’s final. The champions went 2-1 (won-lost) in round robin play to place fourth among the 13 teams, then won three consecutive playoff contests.

On top of that you can layer an impressive list of optional active safety features that includes Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Blind-spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Path detection, ParkView and a Rear Backup Camera.

skills would allow, there were also a few hours on the street getting to test the livability of the Z06. This was a big part of the design challenge. Juechter states “You can use them as daily drivers, you can use them as a long distance tourer, the seat comfort is good over long periods of time and you can also hammer it on the racetrack everyday.”

The new Z06 really is a car without compromising comfort. The manual transmission is easy to shift, the clutch is light and the car is very easy to use, even in stop-and-go traffic.

The secret is the magnetic ride control that makes adjustments to the shocks to smooth out larger bumps. The seats are supportive and the dash is futuristic. The previous buyers of the Z06 told Chevrolet that, yes they wanted a fast car but also the modern comforts, and this car has everything from navigation to a standard removable Targa top, even an available automatic transmission.

Drive It is understood that a Z06 Corvette should be fast but this new model is also very precise and rewards even the average driver with a level of confidence and ability to go fast, that

defies belief. Juechter explains how this was achieved. “We use the technology, either in the tire construction, or the electronic differential, magnetic selective ride, it all comes together in the performance envelope but make it very accessible to normal driver’s, so people of average talent can go very fast”. And fast I went. Driving both the Z06 with a manual or the new 8-speed automatic is a jolt of adrenaline that should be bottled and sold. The howl from the 650hp 6.2L supercharged V8 is a sweet sound from inside the car and even more threatening outside the car. The traction is uncanny and the cornering grip unshaken due to massive Michelin tires and race ready Michelin Cup tires on the Z07 trim. The brakes are very surefooted even lap after lap. What is fun is using the manual transmission with re-matching, letting the car automatically blip the throttle of downshifts.

Verdict The top dog is the Z07 package that includes ceramic brakes, the competition tires, more aerodynamic effects and a forty percent stiffer ride. This is the car to get if you are a track rat or take part in weekend club events.
