Kelowna residents who regularly travel a narrow and windy portion of Highway 33 are frustrated that their concerns about road safety continue to be ignored by the provincial government, while the number of fatalities and serious accidents stack up.

“As we’re speaking now there’s another accident in progress,” said John Collinson, the president of the Joe Rich Residents Association, Monday afternoon as emergency crews worked to clear the site and tend to the injured parties.

The accident, he explained, was close to the spot where 21-year-old Alexandra Paulina Nyuli died last week—an event that’s rocked the community and galvanized its resolve to see changes.

Starting at the Black Mountain store, and twisting its way up to Big White Ski Resort, Highway 33 has long been two lanes of terrifying, high-speed travel, he explained. And it’s only become worse in recent years.

“It’s a nerve racking drive,” he said.

“There are a lot of idiots out there.”

Three years ago the community met with representatives from the B.C. Ministry of Highways to deal with the issue, and asked for a reduction to the speed limit. At that time it was at 90 km/h, and neighbourhood residents were asking for a change to 80 km/h.

What happened instead, shocked those who use the road most frequently.

“Highway 33, which is a narrow two lane road, with no shoulder and no divider, is now 100 km/h,” he said.

“People who drive the road regularly, do it sensibly, but there are a lot of idiots who think, ‘It’s 100 km an hour, then I can do 110 to 120 km an hour.’”

Loaded semis even take the windy road at that speed, he said, and when they’re combined with the dozens of cars streaming down from Big White after a day of skiing, things get really hairy.

Collinson himself has had a few “white-knuckle” moments, waiting to turn off the highway to get to his home on Philipot Road.

Cars streaming down from the mountain block his passage, and because there’s no place to turn off, cars back up behind him. It’s a situation he believes could eventually cause a deadly pile up.

“When you’re sitting there, no shoulders on your right, none on your left, cars have to stop or they’re in trouble…and the roads sometimes are very icy,” he said.

It’s a problem, he doesn’t see an easy answer to. “The road is too narrow and the cost to do what needs to be done is too high,” he said, noting straightening curves and widening the path would go a long way to improving safety conditions.

If that can’t be done he’d like to see shoulders widened and turning lanes added.

A meeting with ministry of highways officials is expected to be held in the spring, and at that time their concerns may be dealt with.

“Everybody was not too happy with how it was going, as it was,” said Collinson. “What happened with Alexandria (Nyuli) pushed everybody over the edge. When (ministry officials) come out, and I’m sure they will, they better walk on eggshells. People are very upset.”

“An unknown male suspect was apparently hiding in the bushes when a 24-year-old Kelowna woman and a

15-year-old Kelowna girl walked past,” said Const.

Kris Clark in a press release. “The suspect reportedly rushed out of his hiding spot, ran between the two young women and slapped their buttocks before fleeing through the bushes to a waiting vehicle.”

Neither the girl nor the woman suffered any physical injuries, said Clark. “The suspect was

seemingly dressed like a comic book superhero, wearing what appeared to be silver underwear over a red body suit with a red balaclava.”

The vehicle was described as a smaller dark-coloured four-door car, headed towards downtown Kelowna.

If you’re not one already, imagine you’re a dad.

How comfortable do you feel taking your child to something called Mom’s & Tots playtime at the local community centre?

What about when your child’s day care calls to discuss toy hoarding?

Will you handle the call and do the follow-up parenting, or hand the phone to your spouse?

It’s this sort of thing, and much more, that Brian Russell thinks about at Dad Central.

Since he started the organization 15 years ago in Ontario, he’s seen society’s perception of fatherhood change. But it’s in the last five years that he’s seen the greatest shift with more men taking ownership of their role as hands-on dads.

Russell is coming to Kelowna Feb. 19 as the guest of CATCH— Community Action Toward Children’s Health, and the B.C. Council for Families. He will speak to invited community organizations about engaging men in raising the next generation. “We work with agencies and organizations to look at how they can be more father-friendly,� Russell told the Capital News.

With federal funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada, he said at Dad Central, “we support folks who are working with families. “There tends to be a lot of resources for moms—a lot of baby programs and that sort of thing. A lot of fathers are looking for opportunities themselves to be engaged. We work with organizations to get them to be more fatherfriendly.�

The realization that fathers needed to be more involved in child rearing come out of poverty studies started a few decades ago— �without an involved

father, children were more likely to live in poverty. Our perspective,�

Russell said, “is that every child needs an involved, healthy father regardless of what relationship the parents are in.�

Dad Central helps groups make decisions about how they can reach out to dads and get them involved. “Dads don’t just want to be playmates,� Russell said, they want to be engaged in their children’s school and life decisionmaking for and with them. “We want guys to know they are welcome,� when they engage with community family resources.

Valentine’s Day is a way to express our love to someone special.

But in Kelowna it is also becoming a way to express the love you have for your community.

This Feb. 14 will mark the second annual Generosity Day, a worldwide movement designed to perform a gesture, big or small and not necessarily with a mind to fundraising, to someone or some group in need.

The idea started on a global level in 2011 when Sasha Dichter, an executive for a non-profit organization targeting poverty who blogs about generosity, decided to not turn down any request for help during the month of February and get others on board.

With the help of friends in the non-profit sector, Dichter took aim at Valentine’s Day, hoping to save it from the corporations looking to profit on romantic love and instead help everyone around the world share in a more generous spirit.

Last year, the Central Okanagan Foundation, Kelowna General Hospital Foundation, Kelowna Community Resources, the local United Way and Canadian Mental Health Association came together to launch the

idea locally.

Candace Giesbrecht, with the Kelowna branch of CMHA, said the idea is not to exploit an act of generosity for your own gain, but to make it a community rather than a specific cause. “We just want to call people’s attention to giving generously,� said Giesbrecht. “People acting generously towards their community adds to a community’s quality of life. With mental health, studies have shown that a person’s state of their own mental health benefits when they are meaningfully engaged in a cause.�

Giesbrecht said Valentine’s Day seemed a natural fit for encouraging acts of generosity. “Valentine’s Day should be about more than chocolates and disappointment and Hallmark cards. If you instead did something meaningful to your community, just imagine what a powerful vibe that would send out. It would be awesome to channel that energy in a positive direction like that, paying forward an act of kindness or thoughtfulness,� she said.

Some inspiring exhibitors are lined up for the inaugural Tot to Teen Expo being held on B.C.’s Family Day statutory holiday weekend—Feb. 7 and 8.

Held at Kelowna’s Parkinson Recreation Centre, at 1800 Parkinson Way, the event is being organized for parents and their kids to explore some of the many local products and services designed for their entertainment, enlightenment and fun.

More than 50 vendors will have booths at the rec centre, where they will showcase their activities, sports,

lessons, child minding, financial services, business opportunities and many other products and services.

Shara Mendoza is organizing the Expo with Alma Gurgol.

Mendoza has plenty of experience putting together such an extensive event having organized the Kelowna Wellness Fairs.

Her experience started where most good ideas come from—family.

Mendoza’s father organizes the Body and Soul wellness fair in Vernon. “He’s a total health nut,” she said admiringly of her dad. “I suggested we do (a wellness fair) in Kelowna.”

Both women are parents of young families and are acutely aware of products and services available in the area.

Gurgol has helped Mendoza at previous fairs and said what was missing here was a way to get all that information together in one place for families.

“There’s so many events going on,” she said, but not much specifically for the whole family.

They both think the Family Day holiday is the perfect time to host the Tot to Teen Expo. “It was the perfect timing,” Gurgol said.

“We wouldn’t have done it any other weekend.”

“I just thought it was a perfect weekend,” added Mendoza.

The Expo is not only for companies that supply goods and services to families. “There are lots of moms who work from home,” Mendoza said.

Many of them created things they needed as parents and couldn’t find locally. “There are so many moms and dads out there looking for a way to boost their family incomes.”

In addition to corporate and homebased businesses, several local non-profits will be represented at the Expo, in particular the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs, Kelowna Childcare Society and the Okanagan

Hunters turned out in force Saturday to protest the share of wildlife licences between those who hunt for their own use, and outfitters who guide tourists.

They came in camouflage. They brought their kids in strollers and their dogs on leash.

They were a sedate and orderly assembly as they walked from a shopping mall parking lot on Old Okanagan Highway to the constituency office of Christy Clark, the Premier of B.C., in downtown West Kelowna.

They were there to sign a petition and deliver letters to the premier, protesting the allocation of hunting licences between local hunters and professional guideoutfitters.

Sean Richardson, head of the Oceola Fish and Game Club, was an organizer of the march.

Soon after he called for a peaceful march, a minor scuffle ensued as a hunter knocked a sign out of the hands of a woman protesting all hunting, and tore it in pieces.

The SIR program up for award The OkanaganKootenay Sterile Insect Release program has been nominated for an integrated pest management (IPM) achievement award.

The winner will be announced at the eighth annual International IPM Symposium, March 23 to 26 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The SIR program has been successfully controlling codling moths in the apple and pear growing areas of the Okanagan Valley for more than 20 years.

The program has garnered international interest from areas and companies looking to recreate its success, such as the US, New Zealand and France.

Switzerland and France, are also looking to use the local SIR program’s approach to control other pests.

Richardson echoed that sentiment, saying all voices were welcome.

“Allocation is a big issue that’s facing resident hunters,” Richardson said to the assembly later estimated at 500.

Richardson reminded the hunters they were there to sign a petition and deliver it, along with their own personal letters to the premier.

“I think that you’re here because you don’t think that 20 to 40 per cent of our harvestable surplus of wildlife should be going to people from other countries.”

Richardson said townhall meetings throughout the province had led to letter

writing and now public marches in support of resident hunters getting a bigger share of the licence allocation.

“A lot of you wrote letters to Christy Clark.

How many of you got a response?” he asked.

No one there could say they had, but Richardson told of one response, from a Clark staffer, that the matter should be taken up with Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations and Kelowna-Mission MLA Steve Thomson. The B.C. Legislature is scheduled to hear the matter on Feb. 10.

“This protest today gives us an opportunity to make sure that she actually got your letter.

There is no excuse that she didn’t get it because today we are going to put it in a mail box right in front of her office.”

Richardson said the march was to accomplish three things. The first was

Two politicians were on hand. Katrine Conroy, MLA-Kootenay West, gave her support as someone who came from a hunting and fishing family.

Dan Brooks, of the B.C. Conservative Party, said he had been a guideoutfitter until two years ago. “I can tell you that the Guide-Outfitters

Association (GOABC) has not been honest with you,” Brooks said.

“I have been an outfitter since 1999. I have not outfitted for the last two years.”

He called the outfitters association “an elitist bunch of snobs. They are determined to win this allocation fight with money and lobbying

instead of honest conservation and values.”

There may still be questions about the local economy but building appears to be bouncing back in Kelowna—at least according to yearend statistics released by city hall.

Both the value of development permits issued in 2014 and the number of building permits issued were the largest in four years and eight years respectively here, the stats showed.

Kelowna’s real estate

division director Doug Gilchrist, in reporting the city’s 2014 fourth quarter results to council, said the $91 million value in the fourth quarter alone put the $349 million total for 2014 ahead of any year since 2010.

The increase in building permits was even more dramatic. The 330 permits issued for singlefamily homes in the city was the highest total in that category since 2007, before the recession, said Gilchrist.

1,424 new businesses took out licences last year in Kelowna, part of a total of 9,251 licences issued over the course of the year.

Other highlights of the report included Kelowna’s airport seeing 1.6 million passengers pass through its terminal in 2014, a number that was not expected to be reached until 2016.

A plan to build a 90unit development near Kelowna’s Landmark office towers, featuring the city’s first “micro” condominiums—units just 29 square metres in size, is heading to public hearing after council heard three traffic mitigation measures will be put in place to help ease congestion on Dayton, Burtch and Dickson Roads.

The measures include: • A right-in/right-out/ left-in channeling of traffic at the intersection of Dickson and Burtch to prevent westbound left turn exits onto Burtch Road. It will require a raised median on Burtch and a corner island on Dickson with an allowance for a pedestrian crosswalk • A separate southbound right-turn lane at the Springfield/ Dayton intersection because traffic affected by the left-turn restriction will result in additional travel southbound on Dayton Street and use of

Springfield Road to access Burtch • Signal timing changes at the lights at Burtch and Sutherland and Burtch and Bernard Avenue.

While development fees from previous construction in the area will help pay for the work, the project itself is too small to generate development cost charge revenue for the city.

Councillors liked what they heard about the mitigation measures. Two weeks ago they had held off sending the project to a public hearing, wanting to hear the results of a minor traffic impact study that was to be undertaken.

“I’m much more comfortable now that I see the traffic mitigation (measures),” said Coun.

Luke Stack. “ I was really uncomfortable last time.

There really needed to be some attention paid, particularly to the Burtch and Dickson intersection.”

office towers. About half the units in the building will be the ultra-small micro units.

City staff said as the area continues to grow, a major traffic study will be required as well as a parking plan.

Both are expected to be done later this year.

Jailed man fights with police A 40-year-old man from New Westminster who was charged with a recent robbery, faces more charges after allegedly breaching his conditions and assaulting a police officer.

The Lake Country RCMP responded to an armed robbery at the 7-Eleven Convenience Store, located at 9724 Highway 97, Jan. 21 at 2:47 a.m.

“A lone masked male suspect reportedly entered the store brandishing a rifle and demanded cash, lottery tickets, and cigarettes,” said Const. Kris Clark, in a press release.

“The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle with an undisclosed amount

of cash and stolen goods. A pursuit was initiated and the suspect was eventually arrested.”

Dennis Garth De Witt was charged with robbery, disguise with intent, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, use of an imitation firearm while committing, flight from police, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

On Jan. 22 within a few hours of being released, a member of the Lake Country RCMP located De Witt in an intoxicated state and arrested him for breaching the conditions of his release.

“While incarcerated in the Kelowna Detachment cells, De Witt was observed attempting to use

items of his clothing to commit self-harm, resulting in intervention being required by officers,” said Clark.

“When police entered the cell, a struggle ensued and it is alleged that De Witt repeatedly punched and kicked the responding officer until he could be restrained.”

The officer was taken to Kelowna General Hospital for treatment and was soon released.

De Witt has since been charged with breach of recognizance and assaulting a peace officer.

He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Kelowna Provincial Court on Thursday.

Leave, Cleave, Become, Believe Credit card giant, American Express, published a survey in 2013, where it asked Americans to reveal their plans for Valentine’s Day. The survey found that about six million couples were likely to get engaged to be married on February 14th, of that year. Can you imagine six million couples, gathered all over the US on Valentine’s Day? Can you imagine six million potential grooms asking six million potential brides this question: “Will you marry me?” A bride’s “yes,” leads up to a marriage ceremony. Many of these marriage ceremonies will be conducted by a Christian minister using a Christian rite of marriage.

Christians believe that marriage has a divine nature. We believe marriage emanates from God’s creative work. By the gift of marriage God founded the human community and ensured its growth. God described marriage in these words from the Old Testament Book of Genesis. “So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh; and the rib which the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and cleaves to his wife, and they become one flesh.” God called Adam and Eve all married couples that followed them, to leave, to cleave, and to become.

God calls married couples to commit to leave their parents’ homes. To leave does not mean to abandon their parents. The Fourth Commandment requires children to honor their father and mother as a lifelong commitment. However, they are definitely called to leave their homes of origin. Their call is to leave their place, or role in life, so they can assume a new role.

The primary goal of married couples is give their children roots and wings. We see this so beautifully in nature. A pair of birds builds a nest, thereafter, they fill the nest with chicks. The couple works together to feed and care for the chicks, and when their wings are strong, and the time comes, the pair urge their sons and daughters to leave the nest and start their own families. God calls parents to love, nurture, care for and train their children, and to provide them with an identity, that sense of belonging to a family. God calls parents to teach their children about God, how to worship God and to live in obedience to God’s will. In this way, children sink roots into a family and a community of faith. Parents are also called to give their children wings, to teach them that it is their calling to leave their home, and marry, and thereby form their own family and to encourage them to embark on this adventure.

God calls sons and daughters to become husbands and wives and start new families.

God declares that this can only happen if men and women leave their identity as a child, and take on the identity of spouse.

God calls the couples that leave their parents’ homes to cleave to one another. The word “cleave,” means to stick fast to another. Cleaving means that a couple is called to stick together emotionally and physically. If a couple sticks together, they can overcome many obstacles.

In the beginning, cleaving to one another emotionally and physically is easier. However, as the couple matures, when the honeymoon period is over, and they embark upon a life together, cleaving can become more of a challenge. The couple comes to understand that their actions may cause the bond between them to weaken. Thus, in order for the couple to continue to cleave, the two of you will have to ask: “Will this action I take, this word I am about to speak, this decision I am about to make, or this attitude I have, draw us closer together or drive us apart? Will what I am about to think, say or do, build up or tear down our relationship?”

God calls a husband and a wife to commit to becoming one. The commitment to become “one,” is a call to intimacy. God calls married couples to enjoy ever deepening physical, emotional, economic and spiritual intimacy.

God calls married couples to know and to understand one another in the deepest and most profound sense; to build a life together, to build a home, fill it with children, raise them in the fear of God and provide for their education.

God calls the couple to be a good example to their children; to be good stewards of the time, talents and treasures God has given them. A married couple cannot be good parents or build a good family economy unless they regularly share their joys, sorrows, goals and dreams and regularly confess their fears and sins to one another. God calls married couples to listen to one another. He calls them to serve one another by acts of sacrificial giving.

The covenants that God requires of married couples seem impossible to fulfill. When Jesus confronted both his disciples and his detractors with God’s high calling in marriage, his disciples blurted out: “If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry.” (Matthew 19:10). Jesus responded to their fears with these words. “But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder.” (Mark 10:6-9) Jesus calls married couples to believe He is active in their marriage.

God issued a warning along with his promise to bind the couple together: “Let not man put asunder.” He warns all not to try to break the couple apart. God acknowledges that the couple will be assailed from within and from without and these attacks will challenge the ties that bind them. God gives them gifts which will, over time, make them one. God calls each couple, each bride and groom, to believe that He put the love they have for one another in

them and He brought them together. They are called to believe that when each takes the other as spouse and responds “I do,” to their vows, God acts. God joins them together in a process which begins that day and continues as long as they both live. God gives them the gift of faith and trust in one another and faith and trust in Him. God the Holy Spirit, gives each Christian, the Fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). God promises that these hidden gifts will blossom and grow.

These gifts are like buds on a fruit tree that will erupt and bear fruit. God promises all Christians that they have the spiritual gift of, “forbearance.” Forbearance is defined as refraining from the enforcement of something, (as a debt, right, or obligation), that is due.

To forebear is to be very patient and not collect, punish or take revenge, even though we have the right to do so. Married couples will inevitably hurt one another by what they say or do and/or by failing to speak or act when they should. The injured spouse may have every right to be angry at the offending spouse. Sometimes the injury can cut to the core of the marriage and may even justify one of the spouses leaving the marriage. It is at this critical juncture that God can act. God gives the couple the Holy Scriptures as their guide.

The Scriptures call couples to see their sin, to say they are sorry, to earnestly repent and want to amend their ways and seek the forgiveness of their injured spouse. God gives the wronged spouse the gift of forbearance, the grace to forgive the other from the heart and remain in the relationship.

Perhaps you are getting ready to pop the question, and you are ready to, leave, cleave and become. Perhaps you are married and you are having trouble leaving, cleaving and becoming. God wants to know that His most passionate desire is for you to believe that He will guide you and that through Him you can, leave, cleave and become. The leaving, cleaving and becoming begins in His presence at the altar. You can find an altar at a church near you.

Use bridges and pay the tolls As 42,000 drivers in B.C. are discovering, failure to pay their bridge tolls is resulting in ICBC blocking them from driver’s licence or vehicle insurance renewals.

That figure represents an all-time record number of people who have refused or neglected to pay tolls on the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges—25,000 and 17,000 drivers, respectively—worth $3 million for just the Port Mann.

Some feel the measure to deny motorists the ability to drive is overly harsh, and obviously, there is still a level of opposition to the concept of bridge tolling.

It’s a surprising number, given that the Golden Ears has been tolled since it opened in 2009, and the Port Mann became tolled in 2012 as a new bridge.

It’s not as though these fees are new, or haven’t been thoroughly discussed and debated.

The reality is that the movement of traffic through the region requires river crossings, and those structures are astronomically expensive to build.

They have to be financed somehow, and there are bound to be opponents of every option, including road tolls, increased gas taxes, additional provincial tax – or, as is the case here, user-pay.

As for the denial of licence and insurance renewal, serious consequences are not an unusual result of failing to pay for a service.

Don’t pay your hydro and gas bills, lose your power and gas. Ignore your cell bill, your phone eventually goes silent.

The vast majority of bridge users pay their tolls, many by pre-authorized payment.

Fee-ducking drivers are issued three warnings before ICBC issues a “Refuse to Issue” notice.

Aside from isolated cases of billing errors, it would seem the system is fair enough.

If you use the bridges, pay up.

News reports downplay reality Nothing is more frustrating than Kathartic having to view the world through the lens of my gender.

KATHY I’d like to pretend, MICHAELS like the legions of ladies who recently took to the Internet to claim their aversion to feminism, that I live in a world of complete equality. Women are paid the same, treated to the same opportunities and never more likely to fall victim to violence. We are not expected to trot around like pretty ponies on special occasions while life marches on business-as-usual for our male counterparts. Nor should we smile vacantly when controversy arises, lest we be known as a shrew.

Life truly is beautiful—rose-coloured, even.

Of course, that’s a load of garbage. One need only go to a wedding or read the most recent statistics on violence against women in this community alone to know most of those assertions are baseless.

Perhaps it’s the fact that I’m continually bra deep in stories of this kind that made me particularly annoyed by this week’s tale of the superhero buttocks slapper.

Every news organization in the city and a few in Vancouver, picked up and added flourishes to the police press release for its apparent absurdity; this one included.

The bare bones of the story went like so: Man in superhero costume jumps from bushes, slaps a couple butts—one belonging to a 15-year-old—then runs into car. The goofiness begged to be explored for some easy laughs.

Where it ceased to be funny, however, is where pixels met real people.

In the online wake of one news organization’s rendering of the police press release, there were a series of comments about how the story was insubstantial.

People, or victims, need to learn how to put things in perspective, readers said. And there were questions about why the police even reported on it.

No thought was given to how the 15-year-old or her adult friend at the receiving end of the slap may have felt. Nobody commented that it must have been upsetting and scary to be randomly hit by a weirdo superperv who was such a coward that he had to run away after his attack.

Nope. It was all about how the two women should learn how to take a joke.

Thing is, I don’t think it’s a joke.

it’s OK for men to touch her in a sexual way, scare or demean her for the sake of their own entertainment as she makes her way in this world, it’s not funny.

And, while I’m on this soapbox, I’d like to point out that there’s usually more to a police press release than meets the eye.

For reasons I may never understand, the Mounties often underplay the crimes they’re dealing with when they issue notices. And when that’s the case, the old adage “no news is good news” doesn’t apply.

Top of mind are the two attacks convicted murderer Matthew Foerster pleaded guilty to late last year.

When he was arrested for Taylor Van Diest’s murder in 2012, police revealed that Foerster was wanted for an earlier thwarted attack on a woman he lived near as well as an assault on a sex trade worker.

Neither story, at first glance, seemed as serious as it was eventually revealed to be. In particular, the thwarted home invasion made me think that the victim got off easy. Police reported that Foerster entered the woman’s house, threatened to sexually assault her, then was scared away.

What was revealed by the victim at Foerster’s sentencing hearing, was that he attacked her so violently in an attempt to make her submit to his sexual impulses, that she couldn’t see straight.

And while he didn’t rape her, he did manage to leave her without any sense of safety, forever looking over her shoulder for a potential attacker.

Basically, she was forever a prisoner to his violence.

The press release fell quite short when it came to revealing those details.

If you want a femme-free cause for caution, look at the story of a fairly infamous June 2011 fight in Rutland.

Police wrote that up like a battle between two backwater families, and local reporters took the bait.

Headlines about our own versions of the “Hatfield and McCoys” naturally rose from the keystrokes of editors looking to breathe life into the stiff prose of police.

Of course, a day later when we all learned a Rutland man had been beaten to death by a bunch of local thugs, including a couple Hells Angels, the nature of the headlines changed.

It’s these stories that remind me to view these dribs and drabs offered by police a little less like potential punchlines, and a little more like news stories.

For those who need some help, you’re welcome to borrow my frustrated-woman lenses. They’re giving me a headache.

Highway 33 a road that’s ‘scary as hell’ To the editor: Are we mad! Yes. Are we pissed off? Yes. But we’re scared too.

Losing that young lady was horrible in and of itself but her father, as the fire chief (and therefore the chief of the first responders in a rural setting), was the first person to the vehicle—even after losing our son I can’t imagine how devastating that would be.

I’m mad, we’re all mad. We asked highways three years ago, when the speed was still 90 km/h, to please reduce it to 80 km/h—but received only a lot of political double-speak.

And then when they re-surfaced Hwy. 33 this last fall and increased the speed we asked them to please, at least, put it back to 90 km/h—more political double-speak.

We are quite aware that technology has improved and motor vehicles can travel faster and manoeuvre much better than older vehicles—but we contend that the road itself is not designed for the higher speeds.

Virtually all (other) 100 km/h roads in the province are four lane or four lane divided, while Hwy 33 is a narrow, winding, two-lane road with little or no shoulder and no lefthand turn lanes

Joe Rich used to be a community of people who lived, worked and played here but the community has evolved into a bedroom community to Kelowna—most working residents commute daily and most of those are scared driving the road. They are scared not because of the road but because of “the others” who drive the road as well.

The speed limit really isn’t the problem, it’s what “the others” do with their speed that is terrifying. According to Ministry of Highways, and by the documents provided by them, they did their study in April—not tourist season, not ski season. They came out for two days, mid-week (they don’t work weekends) for an hour each day—that was their ‘study.’

The major problem time for traffic in Joe Rich is ski season on the weekends at about 4 p.m. (Ski day is over and the tired idiots are either in a hurry to get home or get to a bar to get drunker.)

We are told, by the Highways that the increase in speed has nothing to do with accommodating Big White clientele in their frenzied rush to get to and from the hill; however, the speed increases to 100 km/h at the bottom of Walker Hill (in Black Mountain)

and goes back to 90 km/h at the Big White turn-off. I’m guessing that is for the safety KELOWNA CROSSING (BY COSTCO) and consideration of the Joe Rich residents 140-2463 Hwy 97 778-484-2688 and not the convenience of the Big White clientele. Combine that with logging trucks NOW BOOKING 15 pt. Furnace Service.... ONLY $89 and commercial semi’s, who get paid by the load and/or by the time, moving as quickly as they can in order to make as much money as they can.

Carriage homes sound like they’d be ‘cheap,’ ‘squishy’ To the editor: There is a movement forming within the District of West Kelowna council that will allow for carriage homes to be built on properties that would, otherwise, not be permitted.

One rational given is that carriage homes would be mortgage helpers. I am not sure how this would help as building a Carriage Home, a small version, would cost around $100,000 to be built.

Another rational is that Carriage homes would expand the stock of low-cost housing.

I am not sure why a home owner would want the burden of having tenants that might not be able to pay their rent. Just hearing that a Carriage Home could be low-cost housing reeks of cheaply built and unattractive.

Descriptions given for building requirements of Carriage homes is also being discussed. For example, a property that is 5,900 sq. ft. will allow for a small Carriage Home and a property of 26,000 sq ft. will allow for a much larger Carriage Home.

5,900 equates to a lot size of, say, 60 by 100 feet. Spatially, this lot size is quite small and having a second home built on the lot would mean the home would be right at the fence line and that seems very intrusive.

The 26,000 sq. ft. lot size equates to, say, 200 by 130 feet. A fair-sized lot, about a half acre, and having two homes on that size of lot would still be ‘squishy’.

Carriage homes bring extra noise, garbage and parking of vehicles and they take away privacy from neighbours. I bought into West Kelowna because I love the peaceful country vibe, open spaces, large single-family lots and mature neighbouhoods. I did not expect to live in a place that could one day look cluttered with cheap housing, clusters of homes, too much traffic and too much noise.

If one were to read the B.C. government’s 2005 guide on secondary suites it would be noted that even the B.C. gov’t states that carriage homes are not an affordable option when dealing with low-cost housing. .

Kelowna will celebrate Global Citizen Week next week with a number of events, featuring food, photography, entertainment and a discussion of social issues.

Watoto children sing their way across Canada Watoto Children’s Choir from Uganda, will perform songs of hope at the Okanagan Adventist Academy, 1035 Hollywood Rd. in Rutland, on Sunday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m.

Watoto means the children in Swahili. The choir is made up of African children who have been orphaned and abandoned due to the spread of AIDS, civil warfare, extreme poverty, or other catastrophic events shaping their young lives.

A donation will be taken to help fund the children in their journey through Canada.

Birthday party for Darwin offers chance for youth to learn about theory of evolution A celebration is planned in Kelowna on Saturday to mark the 206th birthday of Charles Darwin, who developed his theory of evolution.

The party will take place at the Rotary Centre for the Arts, 421 Cawston Ave., from 1 to 3 p.m., put on by the Kelowna chapter of the Centre for

Ryder said there will be birthday cake served along with fun games and crafts.

The event is free to the public and those participating are encouraged to bring evolution-themed things and to wear your party clothes.

The Centre for Inquiry Canada’s goal is to champion the discoveries of scien ce and pass that wisdom and knowledge to future generations.

Darwin’s theory of evolution presumes the development of life as being a complex evolution of creatures from more simplistic ancestors naturally over time.

terror, mostly at night, when I would hear him scream out in the darkness.

When I rushed in to calm him at his bedside, his eyes were wide with a frightened stare that rather shook me to the core.

It seemed that in the stillness of sleep, his subconscious was bringing forth some unresolved issues and some of the images left him unnerved in a way I had never seen before.

I also watched this same occurrence with my mom as she lived with me in her final year of her life.

Gradually those fears seemed to subside, but the choice still remained for both of them to fight death or accept it.

Experiencing the imminent death of a loved one brings home a very deep truth that can prepare us for our own journey towards the inevitable ending of our physical life here on earth. The desire to “age

well” necessitates taking an inner journey into our beliefs and understanding aging from a spiritual perspective.

A process of learning how to surrender, if started before the time that death is sitting right on our doorstep, seems to offer an opportunity to ease our fears of completely letting go and opens our eyes to possibilities that perhaps we have refused to allow ourselves to experience.

We have all heard or read stories about people chronicling near death experiences and sharing their discoveries of “seeing or being in the light,” yet we seem to still question their validity because we have not been there ourselves.

I know I was always fascinated with it all at quite a young age.

But it wasn’t until I was faced with the frightening feeling of being completely out of control, when I knew there was no way to

It was the night that we moved him from his home to the palliative ward at the hospital that shook my tired caregiver body to its most fragile questioning of what life was all about.

Why this? Is there nothing left for me to do to help him? It was in this moment of knowing I didn’t have any power within myself alone to handle the overwhelming emotions and feeling of inadequacy I was left with as I surrendered the care of my father over to the hands of someone else.

Coming home to get some rest, I had to face a much deeper truth and it took me to a place that I had never been before.

A telling moment when you either choose to fight, deny or surrender to the fact that we are spiritual bodies, not just physical ones. For me, this challenge was too big to tackle on my own. I asked for help with a heart that was truly open. Open because my dad needed it to be and so did I. And just like someone who crosses into another realm because their heart has stopped, so I did as well, although without the necessity of having to die. No one was more surprised than me as I felt this light envelop me and a calming vibration begin to fill every cell of my body.

There was no mistaking that this was a form of energy much greater and more powerful than me alone. It was an expansion into another realm and left me with a knowingness I did not have before, an understanding of the “ light” and the incredible unconditional love that goes with it.

My life path

changed forever from that moment. When you are faced with insurmountable odds, it offers a gift that you can choose to receive or not.

You simply have to decide to surrender.

As the aging journey

of life’s passage presents things we feel unable to handle, we can choose to take one step inward before taking one step outward, however small.

Each occurrence is an opportunity to practice letting go of worry and

finding the “middle way.” make a good sound.

Developers optimistic about 2015 Failure to manage debt will add hardship for students Alistair Waters

A predicted increase in B.C.’s population, lower interest rates and increased buyer confidence is leading the head of the Pacific region of the Urban Development Institute (UDI) to predict 2015 will be a good year for developers in this province.

David Porte, who chairs the UDI Pacific regional board and oversees a development company in the Lower Mainland, was in Kelowna last week to speak to members of the Okanagan UDI chapter.

UDI represents developers across B.C. and has 626 members, 112 of whom are located here in the Okanagan.

This month alone,the organization has attracted 13 new development companies as members.

And Porte questioned if B.C. will have the jobs needed for all those workers.

If they can find it, that should bode well for the housing market, said Porte, as one of the keys to consumer confidence is steady employment.

Another factor that could affect development here could be a move away from single-family homes into multi-family buildings.

Porte said some people, especially those in the Vancouver area, are trading in the dream of a yard or garden for a condominium or rental unit that is located somewhere close to amenities, culture, recreation and entertainment options.

Andrew Bruce, chairman of the local UDI chapter, said while he agrees with Porte when it comes to the provincial picture, he said locally the Central Okanagan is different from the Lower Mainland as there is still a strong demand for singlefamily homes here.

But, he acknowledged that one look at downtown Kelowna’s growing skyline reflects the increasing demand for condominium living that Porte talked about.

As a result, he sees a more balanced market developing here this year.

“I think we’re in for a fairly solid year this year,” said Bruce following Porte’s presentation.

It’s no secret that getting an education isn’t cheap, but is debt inevitable?

By the time Kathleen Robinson graduates from the University of Waterloo in Ontario with her Bachelor of Environment Studies, she will be approximately $44,000 in debt.

The 23-year-old has done her best to earn money for school when she returns home to B.C. for the summer, often taking on multiple jobs at once.

Regardless of her efforts, expenses add up: tuition, textbooks and rent, leaving Robinson with no choice but to apply for a student loan.

As she works towards a career in politics, she expects to pay about $400 each month towards her debt for the next 10 to 20 years after graduation.

According to the Canadian Federation of Students, the average student debt upon graduation is nearly $30,000, and for students completing a four-year degree away from home, data shows that the expenses can add up to $60,000.

Jay Mitchell, a student at the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford, will complete

his Bachelor of Arts degree in December 2015, at which point he will begin the long road to paying back $80,000 in student loans.

“Being stuck in the loan-study cycle can be really mentally draining, and that’s a really negative outcome when we want students to be performing their best and really learning what they’re studying,” he said.

“With minimal time to work during full-time study, the loans build up faster than we can hope to pay them.”

Debt can be a major hindrance to many students as they struggle to work, gain independence and simultaneously achieve high academic standings.

The first step in limiting, managing or eliminating debt altogether is being aware of the available saving strategies and options, including scholarships and grants.

A survey conducted by CIBC in the summer of 2014 found that 51 per cent of Canadian college or university students have, or will need, to borrow money to pay for their education.

This means that over half of Canadian students will require the kind of money smarts that

can help them navigate interest rates and better manage their funds.

For starters, it’s advised to build a manageable debt repayment plan that outlines a plan while in school and upon graduation.

However, for many students, including Mitchell, it’s not as easy as it sounds.

“In one early semester, I’d spent my entire loan before the semester was over, simply because I didn’t know how to budget,” he said.

“Young people are raised inside a culture of commodity consumption, so it’s hard to suddenly switch that mindset off once the government drops thousands of dollars in your bank account.”

Kevin Dove, head of external communications with CIBC, says failing to manage debt appropriately can lead to financial and emotional stress, and negatively impact students’ credit rating, essentially impacting their future ability to get loans for a car or a mortgage.

Colthorp just missed the podium and finished fourth in her category with a personal-best score of 108.18 points.

Colthorp opened in 10th after the short program but moved up six spots thanks to a second ranked free skate.

Another dramatic comeback occurred for Kelowna’s Ajsha Gorman,

year-old Rachel Pettitt finished third in the short program and first in the free program to finish with a personalbest 112.87 points and a Canadian national title.

Pettitt trains year-round in Kelowna with the KSC, but represents her home club in Whitehorse, Yukon.

The KSC’s strength and depth was evident, as local skaters qualified to compete at all three levels of competition. In fact, the KSC had the most female singles entries of all clubs across Canada.

In the Junior Women’s division, 17 year-old Cailey England became the third singles figure skater in Okanagan history to medal at the Canadian Junior level. She skated a great routine for a personal-best score of 127.33 points to win a silver medal.

England, a grade 12 Okanagan Mission Secondary student, was forced to withdraw from a qualifying event last season due to a hernia, which required surgery and a four-month layoff but bounced back in a big way with the silver skate.

“I think the trip came at the right time for us,” said Lambert. “We keep talking about wanting to get better and we felt that was the best we’ve seen our team play. Our team building is continuing to grow and certainly on this trip we took steps in the right direction.”

The trip was the Rockets final lengthy road excursion of the WHL regular season as Kelowna heads into the final seven weeks of play with nine road games left, all of them against Western Conference opponents and all but two against teams in the BC Division.

This weekend Kelowna has a home and home against rival Kamloops, hosting the Blazers on Friday night before playing in Kamloops on Saturday.

“We constantly want to grow as a group and we feel there are a couple areas that we need to work on this week,” said Lambert.

The Rockets also have a home game on the B.C. Family Day holiday, hosting Prince George in a special 2 p.m. start at Prospera Place.

The Kelowna Skating Club had a terrific week in Kingston, Ontario where five local skaters took part in the 2015 Canadian Tire National Figure Skating Championships, featuring the top skaters from all of Canada at the Novice, Junior, and Senior levels.

The Kelowna Rockets road trip through the WHL Central Division last week came at the right time for a team that still sits in first place overall in the WHL, but remains a work in progress after the addition of several new players that joined the team last month.

And if a 5-1 win on Saturday night in Kootenay, in the team’s fourth game in five nights on the road is any indication, the Rockets are starting to gel together quite nicely.

“When you play four games in five nights with a lot of travel it’s never easy,” said Rockets head coach Dan Lambert, who saw his team go 3-0-0-1 on the road trip, picking up seven of a possible eight points. “Our best game was probably (Saturday) in Kootenay.

I thought we were really starting to make some plays and look comfortable with each other.”

The Rockets jumped all over Kootenay en route to the win, and also earned wins in Red Deer and Lethbridge on the trip, only losing 2-1 in Edmonton in a shootout.

West Kelowna Warriors forward Brett Mennear has committed to the Bentley University Falcons for the 2017-2018 season.

Mennear, who is from West Kelowna, is in his second full season for the Warriors, playing in 102 games, and recording 14 goals and 19 assists for 33 points.

“I’m very excited to have committed to play hockey at Bentley University. I decided to commit there because it was a great fit on the ice as well as academically,” said Mennear.

The Warriors coaching staff also echoed Brett’s statements about the fit to the Falcons program.

“Brett is a great 200 foot player, and Bentley is getting a player that is dedicated on and off the ice,” said Warriors Associate Head Coach/ GM Brent Gough, “We are extremely excited for this opportunity for Brett.

Bentley has had great

success with players from our program and we hope that Brett is another one of those successes.”

Prior to joining the Warriors, Mennear played for the Okanagan Rockets of the BC Major Midget League, where he put up 32 goals and added 57 assists for 89 points in 78 games.

He also had 7 points (2 goals, 5 assists) in 8 playoff games for the Rockets in 2012/2013.

He will join fellow Warrior teammate Jonathan Desbiens on the Falcons roster in 2017/2018.

As a team building exercise aimed at improving and getting set for playoffs, the KSS Owls senior girls basketball team had a solid weekend on the court, hosting the Best of the West girls basketball tournament.

On the court the team was also successful but came up just short against the Immaculata Mustangs in the final, dropping a 49-39 decision to the Mustangs, who claimed the tournament title.

“Our whole goal last week was to improve on breaking full court pressure and to play tough defense,” said KSS coach Lisa Nevoral.

“I think we reached both goals this weekend and I am pleased with how the girls handled themselves under tough defense, especially Immaculata’s full and half court defense. The girls didn’t back down and even though things didn’t

always go their way, they continued to play hard.”

In the final, the first meeting between KSS and Immaculata in 11 years, the teams played a defensive battle that the Owls led 22-21 at the half. The second half was a see-saw battle that the Mustangs eventually took the lead and extended it late in the game, including a key threepointer late that put the game out of reach for KSS. But Nevoral said even with the loss, the game was a great team effort by the Owls.

“Even with a loss, the girls were able to break Immaculata’s full court press and played great defense on their team,” said Nevoral. “We limited their fast breaks to a handful and the score didn’t open up to a difference of 10 points until the last few minutes of the game. We can now go back to the drawing board and revisit where we need to improve as

we head into the last few weekends of league play, and then Valleys at RSS. The Owls, ranked 10th in the province in the girls AAA basketball league, had opened the tournament with a 5957 win over Vernon as Ellie McCarthy was named player of the game. Against SheldonWilliams collegiate out of Saskatchewan, KSS had a 30 point win, winning 78-48 as every girl on the teams scored at least one basket. Avery Watson was named player of the game in the win.

In the final, Hannah Friesen was named the player of the game, bouncing back after being injured early in the tournament.

KSS now moves on to the final few weeks of league play in the Okanagan Valley before heading into the playoffs, which open with the Okanagan Valley Championships at RSS. @KP_media1

The UBC Okanagan Heat men’s basketball team toppled valley rival Thompson Rivers Saturday night in Kelowna 84-75 as a trio of Heat starters shot the lights out in 20plus scoring figures.

Third-year guard Mitch Goodwin (Kelowna) netted a season-high 25 points, adding five assists, and he shot nearperfec from the charity stripe before missing a pair of free-throws late to settle at 13-15. He was awarded Player of the Game Honours.

The Heat split a pair of games with Thompson Rivers on the weekend after TRU opened the weekend with an 8060 win over the Heat on Friday.

The victory is a huge confidence boost for a Heat squad which had been on a 10-game slide to sit in the bottom of the division.

“We have been a bit down on ourselves the past few weeks, but the young guys really showed how mature they are with how hard they competed tonight,” said Goodwin, the lone third-year on a very young team.

“I would say that we’ve come a long way since September. I’ve witnessed all of them grow on and off the court and tonight we showed just how far we’ve come as a team.”

WOMEN HEAT

After closely missing a chance to steal a win off the Explorer Divisionleading Thompson Rivers WolfPack just a night prior, the home standing UBC Okanagan Heat women’s basketball squad were once again narrowly bested by their valley rival Saturday night, this time in a 61-47 result.

Leading through three quarters 41-39, the now

15-1 WolfPack broke through in the fourth, coming alive offensively at just the wrong time for a Heat squad who had hit an untimely scoring drought. Thompson Rivers would win that frame 22-6 to close out the season series in a sweep.

Thompson Rivers has now recaptured the President’s Cup from UBC Okanagan, an annual award between the two schools based on cumulative wins across all varsity sports. For the women’s category the Kamloops school won 4-3.

The WolfPack improve their record to 15-1 for the season and remain atop the Explorer’s Division having already clinched a playoff berth.

The Heat meanwhile move to 4-12 for the season.

TO Lakers chalk up two ties and a loss on Vancouver Island road trip The Thompson Okanagan Lakers AAA female hockey team had two ties and a loss in a three-game weekend tilt against the Vancouver Island Hurricanes.

In games played in Campbell River, the Thompson-Okanagan squad had a 3-3 tie and a 1-1 tie on Saturday before dropping a 3-1 decision on Sunday to Vancouver Island.

Liquid Lightning swimmers started 2015 with a bang, notching 248 individual personal best times to finish third at the Kelowna AquaJets’ Snowfest swim meet Jan. 23 to 25.

Bryce Molder, 16, punched his ticket to the Speedo Western Championships Feb. 19 to 21 in Edmonton, Alberta with a club record 1:00.83 in the 100-metre butterfly to win the event.

Molder out touched the rest with a second Western qualifying time in the 200-m fly with a club record 2:14.71.

Molder also won the 400m freestyle.

Club records also tumbled as Taylor Smith, 11, took out Kassidie Cornell’s 2008 club record in the 200-m breaststroke with a 3:20.60, dropping 18 seconds off her previous best. Smith also won the girls 11 and under 50 fly with a club record 36.72. She swam to all best times and won the 200 free and 100 breast.

Alex Strobel, 11, set a club record in the 200 fly with 3:15.24 for third place. Strobel’s work in the pool paid dividends as she lopped 22 seconds off her 800 free, 15 seconds off her 400-m individual medley and 10 seconds off her 200 fly.

Jessica Forbes, 16, swam to a club record 1:05.67 to win the 100 fly. Forbes placed second in the 100 fly and took 10 seconds off her 400 IM. Brock Hoel, 13, set club records with wins in the 200 free, 1500 free and 200 back. He swept his events out touching the rest in the 50 fly, 50 back, 100 back, 400 IM and 400 free.

Bree Cooper, 17, won the girls 16 and over 50 free with a 27.69 and broke the one minute mark with a personal best 59.23 to win the 100 free. Cooper took 14 seconds off her 400 IM to take second.

Christina Russo, 19, won the girls 16 and over 50 fly and 200 fly.

Craig Mathieson, 16, won the boys 16 and over 50 breast and took 20 seconds off his 1500 free for third place.

won the boys 12 and 13 division 100 fly and came second in the 100 back, 200 free, He took 39 seconds off his 400 free to finish third.

Lincoln Hoel, 11, took 10 seconds off his best time to win the 200 fly.

Hoel won the boys 11 and under 50 breast, 200 breast, 100 fly, 200 free, 200 fly, 100 breast and 400 free.

Pierson Piche, 10, swam all best times with wins in the boys 11 and under division 50 fly and 100 back. He finished second in the 50 back and 50 free.

This was Emma MacKenzie’s first regional meet. She rose to the occasion swimming all best times including taking off 12 seconds in her 100 fly. Connor Diemmert marked his first regional meet with 100 per cent best times as well.

Other swimmers who achieved 100 per cent best times include Kaitlyn Luchka, who took 12 seconds off her 200 breast and 26 seconds off her 200 IM; Georgia Pengilly, 13, who took 26 seconds off her 400 IM and swam to a new AA time in the 200 back Jacklyn Pengilly and Ryan Scott.

Swimmers who missed 100 per cent by one time include Enrica Guidi, Sydney MacFarlane, Katie McConechy, Samantha Pringle, who took 13 sec off her 200 breast and 12 seconds off her 200 IM and Madison Wudrich, who swam a new AAA time in the 50 fly.

Lightning swimmers with big drops in time included Angelina Barkley, who chopped 14 seconds off her 200 IM; Victoria Koehle, who erased 10 seconds off her 200 breast; Cassidy Lawrence, 14, – 11 SEC 50 breast and Madison Poole, who took 10 seconds off her 400 I.M. Janae Hoel, Megan Allan, Paige Allan, Gabrielle Hanvold, Cameron McConechy, Kyra McNulty, Sara Roggeveen, Paighton Senger, Ava Toyata, Marc Toyata, Quin Toyata and Diana Trif also had notable swims.

BOWERS, DORRANCE It is with sad hearts we announce the passing of our much loved husband, dad and poppa. Dorrance Bowers died at Mountainview Care Home where he had resided the past two and a half years. The care and love he received there has been and always will be a great comfort to his family.“Bow” was born in Exeter, Ontario May 8, 1925. He grew up in Ottawa and after public school he studied medicine at the University of Toronto. He interrupted his studies to serve in the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy. He later studied at the Mayo Clinic and London Heart Institute. Dorrance came with his family to Kelowna in 1957 where he joined the Knox Clinic and later branched out into a private cardiology practice.

He leaves behind his wife Ruth of 62 years, children, Jim (Catherine), Bob (Julia), Patty (Nick) Balfour and Barbara (Rod) Lawson, beautiful grandchildren, Jessica, Tom, Kate, Olivia, Ryan, Sam, Sarah, Jack and Graeme, and his sister, Joan McCallum. No public service will be held. The family will have a celebration of his life in the summer at his most favorite place, “The Beach Lot”. Anton was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be remembered always for his commitment to family, his positive outlook on life, kind nature, jovial laugh, deep singing voice and strong work ethic. Anton treasured the time he spent with his many friends. FITZPATRICK, HUGH DUGGAN

Passed away at Kelowna General Hospital with family by his side on Friday, January 30, 2015 at the age of 84.

Pre-deceased by his wife of 58 years Jacqui and his sisters Marie Green of Kelowna and Glenda Doran of Powel River, survived by his sister Kay Sladen of Lake Country, daughter Sheilagh Fitzpatrick of Kelowna, son Dock (Cathy) Fitzpatrick of Kelowna, daughter Shaune (Terry) Stewart of Lake Country; grandchildren: Jordan (AJ) Wilson, Cecily Wilson, Ariane Wilson, Jonathan (Andi) Fitzpatrick, Taeya (Adrian) Boruta, Kaeli Fitzpatrick, Britney Stewart, Katelyn Stewart, Amanda (Mike) Morley; great grandchildren: Jakob and Zakary Wilson; and numerous nieces, nephews and his extended family. Hugh was born in Kelowna, BC on November 26, 1930. Hugh grew up in Rutland, attending elementary school and high school in Rutland and Grade 13 at Kelowna Secondary High School. Hugh was a Rutland native, only leaving to attend the University of British Columbia. Hugh returned to Rutland where he started a confectionary delivery business delivering supplies to convenience stores throughout the Okanagan Valley. Hugh met his soulmate Jacqui while staying in Penticton on his delivery route. They eventually married and lived the rest of their lives in Rutland and Kelowna. Hugh was a community minded man driven to helping those around him and passionate about the opportunities available in the Okanagan. Never one to sit still, Hugh was actively engaged in many public activities. He taught Sunday school at the Rutland United Church; was an active Gyro Club member for 60 years; volunteered for the Rutland May Days; coached Rutland Juvenile Soccer; volunteered as Scout Leader for the Rutland Boy Scouts; and organized the sponsorship for local figure skaters. Hugh also donated his time to many initiatives including, designing and building the Rutland Centennial Hall; designing and building the Gyro Park beach washrooms; serving ten years as Chairman of the Kelowna General Hospital; serving as director of the Kelowna YMCA; and serving as director of the Kelowna riding for the BC Social Credit party. Hugh owned and operated a building construction and design company, building many homes in Kelowna, the infrastructure buildings for the startup of Big White, and the first accommodation buildings on Big White, to name a few.

Upon the death of his father in 1968, Hugh assumed the management of the McLean and Fitzpatrick fruit packing operation until 1986 when the fruit packing was discontinued. Hugh purchased the Mac & Fitz property in 1986 and converted the business into a warehouse business, still storing fruit but also storing seedling trees and SunRype juice. Hugh grew the business to include a civil construction division, contaminated soil transportation division, property management division, and a long haul transportation division operating from Vancouver to Toronto. Hugh loved his work, attending the office up to the day before he entered the hospital on December 29. Hugh touched many lives and he is sorely missed. The world was a better place with him than it is now without him. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at 1:00 PM at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC with Pastor Ed Weiss officiating.
