What’s the best way to approach sewage treatment on Greater Victoria’s west side?

That will be determined using feedback garnered from a series of open

houses held recently by Westside Solutions in Colwood, Esquimalt, Langford, Songhees First Nation, and last Thursday at View Royal town hall.

So where do we go from here?

Colwood Mayor Carol Hamilton said now the hard work begins, which is to take that feedback, streamline it and come up with concrete options for the project to present back to the public during round 2 of the consultations.

Despite a good turnout at the open houses, many people struggled to offer feedback because they wanted actual

treatment options to choose from, said Michael Baxter, Colwood’s director of engineering.

Given that the process is largely starting from scratch again after a Capital Region-wide plan for sewage treatment fell apart, the Westside program is in the early stages.

“We need to ask them the very general questions up front and get a sense of what they want,” he said.

Mom and babes project inspires Shoreline students Allows students to practise altruism, acknowledge social justice and other complex issues, principal says Don Descoteau News Gazette staff

There is plenty of excitement among a group of Grade 6 students gathered in the Shoreline Community Middle School library.

The students, part of the leadership-focused Youth Creating Inclusion club at the school in View Royal, are buzzing around three wooden boxes. The containers are filled with newborn baby clothes, niceties for new moms and supplies to start them off once they leave the maternity ward at Victoria General Hospital.

“It’s nice to feel we’re a part of something that makes a difference in someone’s life,” says Krystina Kearney, one of the youth who worked on the Let’s Go Home project overseen by Shoreline educational assistant Emily Urbaniak.

The project saw students go out on lunch hours to request donated items from area merchants and community groups, then spend a pro-D day hand-sanding and painting the roughly 30 boxes assembled by volunteers with Campbell Construction. Each box is decorated with its own design, making them unique to their eventual owners.

Shoreline principal Nadine Naughton, who moved over from

Gordon Head middle school to start this school year, brought the Youth Creating Inclusion concept with her.

The goal, she says, is to get young people talking about “doing

the right thing because it’s the right thing to do,” about altruism, practising kindness and about the social justice requirements of living in harmony in a complex world where not everyone is the same.

Urbaniak had previously taken a course on making a difference in one’s community and generating momentum for a cause. When she approached Naughton about the baby box idea, the principal figured the charitable project could be a perfect match with students in YCI. It was an instant hit.

“I’m present to how passionate kids are to create change in the world,” Urbaniak says.

The project is an illustration of community and how the pieces all fit together, with youth, adult volunteers and the beneficiaries – the moms and babies – each playing a role, she adds.

Naughton, noting that YCI’s 30 or so members include an increasing number of adults, says, “Kids at this age naturally want to lead, and sometimes they need a nudge.

This project gives them an opportunity to do that.”

But where will they skate?

Belmont’s relocation means West Shore’s only skatepark will go away, at least for now Mike Davies News Gazette Staff

When Belmont secondary relocates into its new home at Glen Lake and Sobey’s takes over the property on Jacklin Road, the West Shore’s lone skatepark will also disappear.

The existing park cost $128,649 and opened in 2007 behind the school, off Kelly Road.

Rob Martin, board chair for West Shore Parks and Recreation, said a skateboard committee has been formed to address the situation. Parks and rec. community development officer Bobbi Neil, who heads up the committee, says her role isn’t necessarily to lead the process, but to “facilitate this community opportunity.” She adds they are currently in phase 3 of a four-phase process for getting a new park up and running.

Phase 1 included a review of the status of the current park and an assessment of West Shore Parks and Recreation’s role in it. The second phase saw that information shared at a public forum, at which attendees were asked about the need for such a facility.

“We received that response, and yes, they do want a skatepark,” Neil says, “so now my role moving forward into phase 3 is to bring people together to help figure out how to make it happen.”

The first step is to find possible locations for the new park, she says.

“Right now we’re working with the various municipalities to determine where it could be located. Once we find a home for it, we’ll start looking at what the specifics of the park will be and fundraising to get it built.”

The committee is made up of various stakeholders interested in the project, including, but not limited to, community members, law enforcement, users of the park and business owners.

“It’s definitely a collaborative process, which is open to all who are interested.

We’re hoping to engage the public in various capacities,” Neil says, though no dates have been secured yet for future consulta-

Metchosin has some of the darkest night skies on the West Shore.

The district has recognized that importance by moving to put in writing low-lighting rules that some have been seeking for years.

“It puts a night sky policy at the village centre, (downtown Metchosin),” said Coun. Moralea Milne.

While the regulations were to be voted on by council Monday night (after the Gazette’s print deadline), the rural community has been working for some time with keen Metchosin residents on an unofficial policy to encourage dark skies. As part of that plan, approximately 30 street lights were changed so the beams shine only down, not up.

At a cost of about $500 per light, the housings were changed over several years. The move helped Metchosin win the Dark Sky Award from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, for the municipality’s work towards light pollution abatement.

Metchosin astronomy enthusiast Bill Weir was involved in writing the original proposal more than three years ago. He said reducing commercial and

community building lights, encouraging owners to aim light only downward and installing motion sensor lighting, where appropriate, would further enhance the character of the municipality.

“From my perspective, if everyone along a road put up one of those large, bright, street pole yard lights that are on from dusk till dawn and shine in all directions, where is the rural character in this?” he asked.

“My wish for this proposal is that it is at least accepted as a guideline, so that when people wish to add lighting to their property or business they are guided towards making wiser choices.”

Milne said area residents are blessed with the opportunity to really see the sky at night, something more urban areas cannot do as easily.

“It’s important to me and the people of Metchosin to have that ability. We are a small enough community and footprint that we could change all the lighting without a huge impact on our budget,” she said.

Light pollution may also have a negative effect on migrating bird species, Milne said, adding that some studies show artificial light interferes with the magnetic compass of birds. They can also attract insects such as moths, drawing them away from their pollinating and mating roles.

“There is an incredible universe out there that we don’t know very much about and this gives us a little perspective on our lives,” she said. “(To) look out at the night sky and see that we are a little part of the universe, it is a little bit humbling and beautiful to look at.” alim@goldstreamgazette.com

According to Christine Houghton of Aurora Consultants, the consulting firm tasked with project communication, among other things, aspects of feedback gathered from open houses and surveys will be incorporated into the plan, where possible.

“We’re not taking anything off the table at this point,” she said at the View Royal session.

While the input process is complicated, she added, it’s important to get it right at the start of projects of this size. This new consultation stage is informed by the failure of the larger project and the way it came together.

“If you feel someone is doing something to you,” Houghton said,

“your reaction is to push back. But if you feel someone is doing something with you, you’re more likely to; if not to participate; at least feel kindlier towards the initiative, knowing it’s not something that’s being imposed on you.”

Hamilton agreed.

“There were some key steps in the process that were missed during the previous try at this,” she said.

With Colwood having independently researched and consulted with various other treatment facilities over the last number of months, they’d be ready if the city chose to go that route, Hamilton said.

“Right from the beginning we were doing our research and developing a plan to have a facility in Colwood for Colwood,” she said adding that would give them a huge head start on any agreedupon initiatives down the line.

“We’ve done our homework and we continue to explore, alongside the Westside Solutions discussions, … the factors of what we can and can’t do. Whether it’s just as Colwood or with whatever (Westside Solutions) ends up developing, we’ll be ready when the time comes to get this done.”

Victoria resident Bryan Gilbert brought his own research to the View Royal consultation in an attempt to help simplify the issue for people.

“When we commit ourselves to a billion dollars in capital, and commit ourselves to $15 million of operating costs every year into the future, I think there’s some-

thing to be concerned about,” he said. “It’s a complex topic, so I consider it just part of my civic duty to help simplify it for people. I’ve done a lot of research on this, so I’m just here to help people digest the information a little easier.”

Gilbert admitted he “used to be in the camp of ‘let’s not do this at all.’” He said he now realizes this is something that needs to happen and is going to happen, so he hopes others will engage the process positively, rather than looking at the mistakes of past efforts.

“Where we’re at right now is great. We’re being consulted this time,” he said.

“This isn’t just them telling us

what they’re going to do, this is a time where the public can – and needs to – get informed and help make the decision. We can actually have a voice this time, if we get ourselves up to speed on it.

“I would like to move forward.

I don’t want to go bashing the old stuff. There were lots of mistakes made and it would be nice if people admitted them, but we are where we are right now, so let’s move on. Let’s go.”

hy is heart attack the number one killer in this country? Ninety-nine percent of doctors say it’s due to atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries) and that cholesterol lowering drugs are the primary way to treat it. But I suggest cardiologists have closed minds and are ignoring facts that could save thousands of North Americans from coronary attack.

Vitamin C is required to manufacture healthy collagen, the glue that holds coronary cells together, just like mortar is needed for bricks. Lysine, like steel rods in cement, makes collagen stronger. Two-time Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Linus Pauling reported twenty-five years ago it takes a mere 10 milligrams to prevent scurvy, but several thousand to prevent heart attack.

Williams Stehbens, Professor of Anatomy at Wellington University in New Zealand, proved Pauling was right. Stebhens’ research showed that coronary arteries closest to the heart are under the greatest pressure. This causes collagen to fracture resulting in the formation of a blood clot and death.

I also believed the research of Pauling and Stehbens is irrefutable. Now, the work of Dr. Bush has convinced me my decision was prudent.

But to take large doses of vitamin C and lysine requires swallowing many pills daily. It’s a tall order for those who dislike swallowing one pill. So for several years I’ve been trying to find a company that would manufacture a combination of vitamin C and lysine powder. Now Medi-C Plus™ is available at health food stores and specialty pharmacies.

The dosage for the Medi-C Plus combination is one flat scoop mixed with water or juice with breakfast and the evening meal. Those at greater risk should take one flat scoop three times a day.

What’s the best way to approach sewage treatment on Greater Victoria’s west side?

That will be determined using feedback garnered from a series of open

houses held recently by Westside Solutions in Colwood, Esquimalt, Langford, Songhees First Nation, and last Thursday at View Royal town hall.

So where do we go from here?

Colwood Mayor Carol Hamilton said now the hard work begins, which is to take that feedback, streamline it and come up with concrete options for the project to present back to the public during round 2 of the consultations.

Despite a good turnout at the open houses, many people struggled to offer feedback because they wanted actual

treatment options to choose from, said Michael Baxter, Colwood’s director of engineering.

Given that the process is largely starting from scratch again after a Capital Region-wide plan for sewage treatment fell apart, the Westside program is in the early stages.

“We need to ask them the very general questions up front and get a sense of what they want,” he said.

The Westin Bear Mountain is offering many fun activities for familes. ‘Road boss’ remembered Last October, 100 past and present riders with the Canadian Cancer Society’s Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock headed out on a ride in dedication to a man who volunteered countless hours to the Tour.

Battling cancer himself at the time, 20-year Saanich police officer Mike Lawless, joined by his wife Krista, emerged from their Central Saanich home that day to a wall of riders sporting the colourful Tour de Rock team jerseys. The group formed a collective ring of support around the couple.

Lawless, whose dedication to the fight against pediatric cancer proved a catalyst for many riders who rode the Tour after him, was cheered on by those who benefitted from his support over his years.

It was, therefore, a cruel irony last month when Lawless was felled by a disease he sacrificed so much, for so long to beat. The 44-year-old father of two, well known among the Tour de Rock community as the Road Boss, was gone.

At his celebration of life, held recently on the ground floor of Langford’s Westin Bear Mountain Resort – seating for 400 proved too small for the crowd – Mike’s many friends, family and colleagues gathered to pay their respects amid hugs, stories and plenty of tears.

The man’s unwavering dedication and his countless hours of volunteerism, benefitting some who will never know his name, cannot be measured only in time. For people like Mike Lawless, it is the moments of shared silence across the communities he has touched with fellow riders that truly tell the tale.

Communities and individuals around Greater Victoria, including those on the West Shore, continue to raise funds and contribute in other ways to dozens of other excellent community building and humanitarian causes.

But when the call goes out for a new batch of riders to tackle the 2015 Tour de Rock – peace officers and media can ride just once – we predict the memory of Lawless’ efforts, dedication and support will prompt his former teammates to talk it up to their colleagues and do their best to support them in the same way.

Education Minister Peter Fassbender announced at the forum that the province is about to unveil new curriculum that moves toward individual learning for all students.

And he said there will be a series of experiments conducted at yet-to-beidentified B.C. schools to pioneer new models of learning.

BCTF president Jim Iker sat stoically through the proceedings, where speakers described integrating community groups and businesses directly with schools.

That’s underway here, with trades training in particular.

Iker’s record on adaptation is clear from his own career. The only school where he actually taught was in the northwest B.C. village of Topley, and it closed in 2010 due to a long-term decline in rural students.

By 2001, Iker had left the classroom to work for the Burns Lake teacher union local, which the BCTF continues to staff eight years after that school district and others disappeared through amalgamation.

Letters to the Editor

Editorial unfairly painted Langford as dangerous place Re: Violent crime a real concern (Our View, Jan. 30) Langford has enough problems trying to recover from the “hick Langford” reputation that Mayor Stew Young and his council have been fighting against for years.

We are finally getting a good reputation as a family friendly city. This editorial was clearly designed to try and destroy that by making Langford out to be “scary and dangerous,” because some criminals from Victoria were passing through and happened to stop in Langford to commit their crime.

I also think it is incredibly important to make a note of where the criminals are from simply because it means that we don’t have the criminal group living in Langford where the crimes can be repeated regularly but that they just happened to be passing through and it could easily have stopped in Victoria, Saanich, or View Royal.

We have lived in Esquimalt with the crimes in the Head Street area; Victoria city, where drug party boarding houses are common and the dealers are dealing on the streets, and

Saanich, where we lived off Cloverdale Avenue near an infamous drug house that has since been torn down.

Langford has been the first safe city where I feel OK letting my kids play in the yard because there are not an abundance of drug houses like there are in Victoria.

I do not think that it is fair to try and destroy Langford’s family friendly reputation because of two non-related incidents involving criminals from outside of Langford.

Cartoon on officer’s death devalued mental illness Re: Editorial cartoon, death of Const. David Wynne (News Gazette, Jan. 28) I am offended this cartoon in regards to the priority order of murder/ suicides.

There is no question, every time a person is killed, either in uniform in the line of duty or in the general public, by someone suffering mental health issues, it is a tragedy to the family, friends and society in general.

It is also tragic that before this heinous act was contemplated, there was a failure to recognize the mental illness and supply treatment that may have prevented the act.

What is suggested in the cartoon violates our moral and society’s standard that every life is worth saving.

I do not think David Wynne went to work as a police constable with the attitude the cartoon portrayed, in relation to his death.

I suggest that an apology to your readers and his family in is order, as is a statement of support to the front-line workers on the mental health battlefield.

With underfunding it is a difficult and demoralizing battle.

Currently the Liquor Distribution Branch, the government monopoly wholesaler, sells products to government stores at cost and sets a minimum price for all retailers.

Belmont writer anticipates spring mounting of The Pajama Game

This is the year of strikes, both in the educational field and onstage.

In April at Spectrum Community School Theatre, Belmont secondary is producing the musical The Pajama Game, based on Richard Bissel’s novel, 7 1/2 Cents.

The Pajama Game focuses on Sid Sorokin, who is hired to work in a pajama factory going through labour issues. The employees demand a raise of seven and a half cents, which their boss, ‘Old Man’ Hasler, refuses to give them. Despite being on opposite sides in the labour debate, with an imminent strike looming, Sid eventually falls in love with the head of the grievance committee, Katherine ‘Babe’ Williams.

The second reason? it just seemed to work out this way that The Pajama Game is about a strike at a pajama factory. And standing on the picket lines (last fall), it made me think about this musical again.”

Although it was several months late in starting production, Young has a lot of faith that the cast will be able to pull off this massive show.

“We have a strong, committed

group this year, and everyone thus far has been working really hard. But it’s gonna [sic] be lot of work,” she laughed. “‘Cause there’s a lot of dancing.”

This is my third year in the Musical Theatre program offered at Belmont, and it has definitely been advantageous to someone who aspires to be an actress.

Ms. Young runs a pretty hardcore production and the results are always stunning.

Two years ago, with some amusement on my part, my grandmother had been slightly reluctant to come to see Fiddler on the Roof, because it was a high school production, thinking they are typically of very poor quality. She was amazed by how professional and wellput-together the show was, and has come to see all of our shows since.

The play opens with the lyric, “The pajama game is the game we’re in” – and this year, we hope you can be in the game too.

then by the Lake Passe Trail to Pedder Bay … and on to Weir’s Beach … This part of the trail became known as the Barde Knockie, much of which still exists today. Then to Witty’s Beach [via Taylor’s Beach] … then to Albert Head Lagoon … and then by canoe to Victoria, conditions permitting.

Though a wagon road from Craigflower to Metchosin (Weir’s farm) was completed in 1862 and a road to Sooke in 1872 (a trail constructed from Bilston Farm to Sooke in 1845 by Indian labour was little used), residents continued to use the Lake Passe and Barde Knockie trails for many years.

That part of the Lake Pass Trail along Matheson Creek is still in use, as is that part of the Barde Knockie Trail within the Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific Property.

“What got you here, won’t get you there.”

When Sara Kaljuvee’s body tells her to stop, she remembers the mantra. When she wants to hit snooze after her 6 a.m. alarm signals the start of another gruelling training regimen with the Canadian women’s sevens rugby team in Langford, she remembers the mantra. When her body is hurting so bad she wants to stop, she remembers her mother, Lynn.

“In grade 7, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, she was re-diagnosed with bone cancer when I was in Grade 11 and during my second year of university, she was diagnosed with brain cancer,” an emotional Kaljuvee says.

Lynn’s condition was eventually deemed terminal and a second brain surgery followed in the spring of 2014. It’s been a challenging journey for the entire family, including Sara’s father Gary and siblings Emily and Conner. It has also served as motivation for the nationally carded rugby athlete to follow her dream.

In August of 2014, the awardwinning player from Ajax, Ont. showed up at the Canadian Rugby Centre of Excellence.

Then 20, she had two suitcases with all her worldly possessions and a goal to represent Canada at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

“My mom is the reason why I want to succeed and one of the reasons why I want to go to the Olympics,” Kaljuvee says. “She would say, ‘don’t worry I am fighting until I see you on that team.’ She is my inspiration. It’s hard being away from her, but she says she is proud of me … that is why I am here.”

One of 22 women based in Greater Victoria who train six days a week, six hours a day, she is battling to be one of 12 players selected to travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil next year. The training is gruelling and the competition tough, especially so on a sevens squad considered one of Canada’s few team medal hopefuls for 2016.

“Literally, the Olympics and gold have been my dreams forever,” Kaljuvee says. “This job is basically everything to me; I can’t see myself doing anything but being on this team. It would mean a lot to (my mom as well). When she was still mobile … she came out to watch me play. I just remember hugging her and bawling my eyes out. It was the best moment.”

Her experience with family health challenges has been exacerbated by physical challenges of her own as she competes hard for a 2016 roster spot. She suffered an Achilles tendon injury that left her on the sideline for months last season, and a recent finger injury that cost her an opportunity to play in a tournament in Brazil.

Financial troubles, including a looming $15,000 student loan – she’s on deadline to repay it following a decision to leave school mid-program to pursue rugby – has further complicated the most important training

year of her life.

Despite Kaljuvee’s off-field challenges, Canada’s women’s rugby sevens head coach John Tait says her determination has been inspiring.

“It is not something she talks too much about,” he says. “We are aware of it because we are a close knit group, (but) you would never guess it by her demeanour. She is a great teammate and great athlete.

She has definitely had tough days, way tougher than most, but she never lets that effect her. We call her an energizer, and it speaks volumes to her character and personality.”

Watching the Olympics with her parents as a child, Kaljuvee says she knew she wanted nothing more than to represent Canada on the world stage one day. When she found rugby, a switch flipped, she says, and despite her success so far, she knows the effort to this point will need to be raised to get her to Rio. “My mom once said, ‘I am so proud of you, you will do so many good things.’ This is one of those good things,” she says.

“She is battling everything, literally from head to toe every day. If she can fight in the hospital I can definitely fight on the rugby field.” alim@goldstreamgazette.com

Mom and babes project inspires Shoreline students Allows students to practise altruism, acknowledge social justice and other complex issues, principal says Don Descoteau News Gazette staff

There is plenty of excitement among a group of Grade 6 students gathered in the Shoreline Community Middle School library.

The students, part of the leadership-focused Youth Creating Inclusion club at the school in View Royal, are buzzing around three wooden boxes. The containers are filled with newborn baby clothes, niceties for new moms and supplies to start them off once they leave the maternity ward at Victoria General Hospital.

“It’s nice to feel we’re a part of something that makes a difference in someone’s life,” says Krystina Kearney, one of the youth who worked on the Let’s Go Home project overseen by Shoreline educational assistant Emily Urbaniak.

The project saw students go out on lunch hours to request donated items from area merchants and community groups, then spend a pro-D day hand-sanding and painting the roughly 30 boxes assembled by volunteers with Campbell Construction. Each box is decorated with its own design, making them unique to their eventual owners.

Shoreline principal Nadine Naughton, who moved over from

Gordon Head middle school to start this school year, brought the Youth Creating Inclusion concept with her.

The goal, she says, is to get young people talking about “doing

the right thing because it’s the right thing to do,” about altruism, practising kindness and about the social justice requirements of living in harmony in a complex world where not everyone is the same.

Urbaniak had previously taken a course on making a difference in one’s community and generating momentum for a cause. When she approached Naughton about the baby box idea, the principal figured the charitable project could be a perfect match with students in YCI. It was an instant hit.

“I’m present to how passionate kids are to create change in the world,” Urbaniak says.

The project is an illustration of community and how the pieces all fit together, with youth, adult volunteers and the beneficiaries – the moms and babies – each playing a role, she adds.

Naughton, noting that YCI’s 30 or so members include an increasing number of adults, says, “Kids at this age naturally want to lead, and sometimes they need a nudge.

This project gives them an opportunity to do that.”

Belmont’s relocation means West Shore’s only skatepark will go away, at least for now Mike Davies News Gazette Staff

When Belmont secondary relocates into its new home at Glen Lake and Sobey’s takes over the property on Jacklin Road, the West Shore’s lone skatepark will also disappear.

The existing park cost $128,649 and opened in 2007 behind the school, off Kelly Road.

Rob Martin, board chair for West Shore Parks and Recreation, said a skateboard committee has been formed to address the situation. Parks and rec. community development officer Bobbi Neil, who heads up the committee, says her role isn’t necessarily to lead the process, but to “facilitate this community opportunity.” She adds they are currently in phase 3 of a four-phase process for getting a new park up and running.

Phase 1 included a review of the status of the current park and an assessment of West Shore Parks and Recreation’s role in it. The second phase saw that information shared at a public forum, at which attendees were asked about the need for such a facility.

“We received that response, and yes, they do want a skatepark,” Neil says, “so now my role moving forward into phase 3 is to bring people together to help figure out how to make it happen.”

The first step is to find possible locations for the new park, she says.

“Right now we’re working with the various municipalities to determine where it could be located. Once we find a home for it, we’ll start looking at what the specifics of the park will be and fundraising to get it built.”

The committee is made up of various stakeholders interested in the project, including, but not limited to, community members, law enforcement, users of the park and business owners.

“It’s definitely a collaborative process, which is open to all who are interested.

We’re hoping to engage the public in various capacities,” Neil says, though no dates have been secured yet for future consulta-

Metchosin has some of the darkest night skies on the West Shore.

The district has recognized that importance by moving to put in writing low-lighting rules that some have been seeking for years.

“It puts a night sky policy at the village centre, (downtown Metchosin),” said Coun. Moralea Milne.

While the regulations were to be voted on by council Monday night (after the Gazette’s print deadline), the rural community has been working for some time with keen Metchosin residents on an unofficial policy to encourage dark skies. As part of that plan, approximately 30 street lights were changed so the beams shine only down, not up.

At a cost of about $500 per light, the housings were changed over several years. The move helped Metchosin win the Dark Sky Award from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, for the municipality’s work towards light pollution abatement.

Metchosin astronomy enthusiast Bill Weir was involved in writing the original proposal more than three years ago. He said reducing commercial and

community building lights, encouraging owners to aim light only downward and installing motion sensor lighting, where appropriate, would further enhance the character of the municipality.

“From my perspective, if everyone along a road put up one of those large, bright, street pole yard lights that are on from dusk till dawn and shine in all directions, where is the rural character in this?” he asked.

“My wish for this proposal is that it is at least accepted as a guideline, so that when people wish to add lighting to their property or business they are guided towards making wiser choices.”

Milne said area residents are blessed with the opportunity to really see the sky at night, something more urban areas cannot do as easily.

“It’s important to me and the people of Metchosin to have that ability. We are a small enough community and footprint that we could change all the lighting without a huge impact on our budget,” she said.

Light pollution may also have a negative effect on migrating bird species, Milne said, adding that some studies show artificial light interferes with the magnetic compass of birds. They can also attract insects such as moths, drawing them away from their pollinating and mating roles.

“There is an incredible universe out there that we don’t know very much about and this gives us a little perspective on our lives,” she said. “(To) look out at the night sky and see that we are a little part of the universe, it is a little bit humbling and beautiful to look at.” alim@goldstreamgazette.com

According to Christine Houghton of Aurora Consultants, the consulting firm tasked with project communication, among other things, aspects of feedback gathered from open houses and surveys will be incorporated into the plan, where possible.

“We’re not taking anything off the table at this point,” she said at the View Royal session.

While the input process is complicated, she added, it’s important to get it right at the start of projects of this size. This new consultation stage is informed by the failure of the larger project and the way it came together.

“If you feel someone is doing something to you,” Houghton said,

“your reaction is to push back. But if you feel someone is doing something with you, you’re more likely to; if not to participate; at least feel kindlier towards the initiative, knowing it’s not something that’s being imposed on you.”

Hamilton agreed.

“There were some key steps in the process that were missed during the previous try at this,” she said.

With Colwood having independently researched and consulted with various other treatment facilities over the last number of months, they’d be ready if the city chose to go that route, Hamilton said.

“Right from the beginning we were doing our research and developing a plan to have a facility in Colwood for Colwood,” she said adding that would give them a huge head start on any agreedupon initiatives down the line.

Victoria resident Bryan Gilbert brought his own research to the View Royal consultation in an attempt to help simplify the issue for people.

“When we commit ourselves to a billion dollars in capital, and commit ourselves to $15 million of operating costs every year into the future, I think there’s some-

thing to be concerned about,” he said. “It’s a complex topic, so I consider it just part of my civic duty to help simplify it for people. I’ve done a lot of research on this, so I’m just here to help people digest the information a little easier.”

Gilbert admitted he “used to be in the camp of ‘let’s not do this at all.’” He said he now realizes this is something that needs to happen and is going to happen, so he hopes others will engage the process positively, rather than looking at the mistakes of past efforts.

“Where we’re at right now is great. We’re being consulted this time,” he said.

“This isn’t just them telling us

what they’re going to do, this is a time where the public can – and needs to – get informed and help make the decision. We can actually have a voice this time, if we get ourselves up to speed on it.

“I would like to move forward.

I don’t want to go bashing the old stuff. There were lots of mistakes made and it would be nice if people admitted them, but we are where we are right now, so let’s move on. Let’s go.”

The next round of public consultations will take place once there are feasible options to discuss. No timeline has been determined for that stage of input. mdavies@goldstreamgazette.com

hy is heart attack the number one killer in this country? Ninety-nine percent of doctors say it’s due to atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries) and that cholesterol lowering drugs are the primary way to treat it. But I suggest cardiologists have closed minds and are ignoring facts that could save thousands of North Americans from coronary attack.

Vitamin C is required to manufacture healthy collagen, the glue that holds coronary cells together, just like mortar is needed for bricks. Lysine, like steel rods in cement, makes collagen stronger. Two-time Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Linus Pauling reported twenty-five years ago it takes a mere 10 milligrams to prevent scurvy, but several thousand to prevent heart attack.

Williams Stehbens, Professor of Anatomy at Wellington University in New Zealand, proved Pauling was right. Stebhens’ research showed that coronary arteries closest to the heart are under the greatest pressure. This causes collagen to fracture resulting in the formation of a blood clot and death.

I also believed the research of Pauling and Stehbens is irrefutable. Now, the work of Dr. Bush has convinced me my decision was prudent.

But to take large doses of vitamin C and lysine requires swallowing many pills daily. It’s a tall order for those who dislike swallowing one pill. So for several years I’ve been trying to find a company that would manufacture a combination of vitamin C and lysine powder. Sixteen years ago following my own coronary attack, cardiologists claimed it was sheer madness for me to refuse cholesterol-lowering drugs. Instead, I decided to take high doses of vitamin C plus lysine with breakfast and the evening meal.
