Tona takes over as interim CAO “We need to build some good building blocks and then it will be easy to move the municipality forward.” Donna Tona, Town of Rimbey interim CAO By Treena Mielke Donna Tona has taken over as interim CAO for the Town of Rimbey. Tona, from Werkz Inc., has been hired by the town to work in partnership with Lori Hillis, the acting CAO for the town. Tona spent some time working for the town this summer, delving into town policies and bylaws. In her position as interim CAO she has plans to update planning and land use files. “We need to get all our ducks in a row,” she said. “There are many fronts to look at. Things need fixing. There are gaps,” she added, noting some policies date back to 1989. “We need to build some good building blocks and then it will be easy to move the municipality forward.” She noted bylaws and correspondence needs to be researched and placed in a chronological report so administration understands which development permit fees correspond to the proper bylaws. A new filing system has been put in place and a new municipal interim is to come on board. Funding for the interim is coming from a provincial grant. Tona said she is pleased to be working with Lori Hillis. “How many municipalities have a chartered accountant as their chief financial officer?” she said. “We are lucky to have her.” During her time in Rimbey this summer, Tona was paid $1,200 a day for her services. She is now being paid $111,000 annually (pro rated for the days that she is in the municipality) the same rate per day as the salary paid to the former CAO, Lucien Cloutier. She will receive no paid benefits. Mileage is to be paid for one day per week. Tona said she plans to work in Rimbey two to two and a half days per week and foresees the position lasting six months to a year. “It is really gratifying to work in my home town,” she said.

403.843.2777 4915 – 50 Ave, East of Rimbey Value Drug Mart Dear friends, We all remember with real love, our days in Rimbey. Since the first day until the last one we had the most beautiful experience and we were warmly accepted by all people in this nice community. Unfortunately our time there was not as long as we all planned and wanted but it all turned out to be a different way. With the changes of the Foreign Work Program we were unable to successfully fulfill our process for the Residency though we submitted our papers few months ago. It was very hard to leave Rimbey and Canada, a country we had already taken as our new home. We felt as if a part of us was taken away. Today we would like to thank all people from Rimbey who made our life there so pleasant and easy even though there was a difference in culture, weather etc. Just to mention some, the beautiful and lovely teachers of our kids and their kind and noble friends (such a good education system you have); the professional and nice staff at our bank ATB Financial with the leadership of our helpful Ilya (the manager); our enjoyable friends of Co-op and Rimbey Foods. In both places Alex used to go buy some food for the restaraunt, both were so supportive. The owners and girls at Sidestreet Liquor Store, Rimbey Liquor Store, the staff of both pharmacies, our Drs. in the Clinic, our stylist and hair dresser Marcia (she is also our friend and neighbor who helped us a lot); Martin and Nicole our landlords; Treena from the Rimbey Review and the whole community that supported our restaurant during these two years. Of course our special thanks goes to our FAMILY of Best Western Rimstone Ridge Hotel, each of them will be in our hearts forever and to Karen and Stanley our Canadian parents. We all know we will have a good and happy life again, but we also know we will never find such wonderful people as those from Rimbey. See you again, Madelin, Alex and Melissa; Jacquie, Yoel and Sammy; Odofvany, Yunia and Fernanda

Canada opens doors for rich immigrant investors With January just barely ended, 2015 is already proving to be a year of surprises, not all of them appearing positive. In Rimbey, the loss of three young families who were here through the foreign workers program has caused some concern, perhaps a few misconceptions and, overall, lots of tears. The families had all become a vital part of the colourful tapestry that makes up a community, and, it seems their departure left a huge hole in the carefully woven threads that won’t soon be mended. While the departure of the families has left many unanswered questions, it is obvious the Cuban families were embraced by Rimbey and, rightfully so. They were hard working, friendly, happy to be here and more than willing to make the community their home. Sadly, the families, worried about being sent back to Cuba as laws in both Canada and the US seem to teeter precariously on the edge of change, are all gone now and the restaurant where they were gainfully employed has shut its doors, at least temporarily. Ironically, the Cuban

Treena Mielke On The Other Side

families departure came on the heels of the federal government’s new immigrant investor venture capital program which opened this week. Under the pilot program Canada will begin accepting applications from millionaire immigrant investors and their families. The government has said permanent residency will be given to international investors who can invest $2 million in Canada. The government will accept up to 500 applications, but will only give permanent resident visas to a maximum of 60 applicants – at least for the time being. According to the Internet, a senior government source told CBC, 60 applicants was a good starting point to evaluate if the new pilot program

is achieving its goals and working in the best interest of Canada’s economy. Each investor will be required to be worth no less than $10 million. That’s a fair chunk of change. The pilot program states these investors, in order to buy their way into Canada, have to agree to make a nonguaranteed investment of $2 million over approximately 15 years into a fund managed principally by BDC Capital, the investment arm of the Business Development Bank of Canada. Immigrant investors who have a legally obtained net worth of at least $50 million can request to be exempted

from one of the four requirements in the pilot program. Who was it that said, “money talks?” It seems the program is moving ahead despite criticism that implies obvious unfairness. The black and white picture the pilot project paints is certainly one that sees Canada as throwing out the red carpet (or at least a very small red carpet) for foreigners, provided they are rich, and the richer the better. The poor people are not welcomed with open arms, in fact, they are not really welcomed at all, except, of course, by every day, ordinary people, who don’t make the rules, but strive to live by

them. The lines between black and white and right and wrong are often blurry. However, the rules of integrity and fairness should not be defined by a price tag. The federal government might do well to consider the true value of hard working people who come here in search of a better life. Perhaps, those are the ones Canada is lucky to have! They love the country unconditionally and ask for nothing in return except to work hard and not be sent home. It seems so little, but apparently, it’s too much!

OPINION

It wasn’t long ago Alison Redford was warning us about a “Bitumen Bubble,” talking up new taxes, and complaining her government wasn’t making enough revenue to balance the books or avoid new debt. Now, Premier Jim Prentice is talking about a “Price Trough” in oil, and he’s using it as an excuse to openly muse about increasing the price of everything for Alberta families. Indeed, Premier Prentice is considering destroying what’s left of the Alberta Advantage by bringing in a sales tax, increasing income tax rates, returning health premiums and even implementing pop and gasoline taxes. Despite the fact he swore new taxes were off the table when he ran for the leadership of the PC Party, Pre-

mier Prentice has opened the door to some dangerous precedents that are patently un-Albertan. This government has a spending problem, not a revenue problem, and in these tough economic times, its important Premier Prentice understand this before he makes any brash decisions that will cause harm to Alberta. The PCs couldn’t balance the books with $120 oil, and they won’t be able to with $50 oil. The problem here isn’t the price of oil. Oil prices are cyclical. They go up and down. The waste around here, however, goes on forever. Just last month my Wildrose colleagues and I took the government to task after we learned they spent $1 million on a Zamboni garage for a public skating rink that never got built. They built the garage, but not the rink. The garage, they say, will be used as a toolshed now. This is sheer incompetence. Before that, we sounded the alarm when we discovered Premier Prentice decided not to expand

the government’s salary disclosure policy to all government Agencies, Boards and Commissions. Shortly thereafter, we discovered more than 10,000 employees at Alberta Health |Services are earning more than $100,000 per year. We also recently called on the government to sell the Federal Building, the palace built for PC MLAs complete with the Premier’s penthouse suite, rooftop garden and movie theatre. This would save taxpayers almost half a billion dollars. We’ve also called for an MLA wage rollback. The PCs, if you remember, voted themselves a raise, right after the last election. But is Premier Prentice willing to look himself in the mirror to find savings, or will he pass it all on to the taxpayer? The first choice is more likely. Remember, Premier Prentice himself spends more than $4.3 million annually on salaries for his inner circle in Edmonton. Now, Premier Prentice is considering breaking his own government’s fixed election law, and calling an illegal, expensive election, one year

early, just to ensure the PCs remain in power. This is not the kind of thing the government should be focusing on right now. Premier Prentice needs to get serious about the economy, and stop musing about the idea of new taxes while he continues to waste hundreds of millions of dollars on things such as MLA offices, corporate welfare and political salaries. Until then, Wildrose remains the only party in Alberta committed to not raising your taxes. Alberta deserves a government willing to spend wisely, cut waste and save for the future, but Premier Prentice will go the other direction and ask families to pay for the mistakes of his party, before he asks anything of himself or his friends in government. Wildrose has had a challenging few months, but I’m proud to say our mission continues. Our team has continued to do great work protecting Alberta families from this PC government. That will never change.

Bentley school continues to gives back to community By June Norvila The Bentley school continually strives to give back to the community. Each classroom donated to a themed Christmas basket to raffle off at the Christmas concerts and there was a silent auction and raffle and donations collected at the Winter Classic hockey game. High school librarian, Sherry Haarstad, spends many hours sorting, organizing, and wrapping up all the classroom gift baskets. This year over $6,000 was raised between fundraising at the Winter Classic hockey game and the school Christmas concerts in December. It went towards the Familiesin-Need program at the school. Gift cards were bought and purchased and distributed to many people / families / children in the community. Haarstad also helps gather ‘Gifts for Grandparents’ which the entire school donates to. Assistant school principal, Stephen Lush, and the Bentley Grade 9 students delivered 44 gifts to grandparents within the community of Bentley, the Bentley Care Center, Oxford Court, Westview Apartments and some individual homes, with another 15 gift bags given to the Red Deer Family Services of Central Alberta to support their efforts to give gifts to grandparents throughout central Alberta. The newly organized parent school council, in cooperation with the school, is helping to organize some activities to help encourage the community to make better use of the

school building itself. The elementary school now opens its doors and hallways to accommodate winter walkers Monday through Thursday from 3:30-8:30 pm. free of charge. All that is required is a pair of indoor shoes. Participants must sign in and out. People can walk the school hallways to exercise while avoiding the cold and icy conditions outdoors, and at the same time admire the students’ work that is displayed. On open gym night, Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m.) the elementary gymnasium is now open. Adults may participate in activities such basketball, volleyball, badminton and floor hockey. Indoor shoes are a requirement. There is no cost. Access for gym night and walking the hallways are through the Panther Fitness doors. The Panther Fitness Centre located in the south end

of the Bentley elementary school is open to the public on Monday through Thursday from 3:30 - 8:30 p.m. and on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings from 8:0010:00 a.m. It is closed on all school holidays. A fitness specialist is available at specified times for personal training, personalized program setup, group/partner training. A variety of exercise equipment is accessible. MP Blaine Calkins responds to article about Cuban families leaving country Dear Editor, I recently read an article by Ms. Treena Mielke entitled “Cuban Families Leave Rimbey and Move to United States. I was very saddened not only to hear that Mrs. Sardina and her family chose to leave Canada but that a very successful business in the town of Rimbey had to close its doors in the process. I did not become a Member of Parliament to watch businesses in Central Alberta close their doors. As your Member of Parliament I have always advocated for policies that are good for small businesses and families. I have met members of the business community such as Ms. Conover on many occasions to listen to their concerns and ideas and to bring them back to Ottawa. In fact, Ms. Conover attended a round table discussion last September which I hosted with my colleague Scott Armstrong, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Human Resources, in Rocky Mountain House. It is important to note that the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) is exactly that. The TFW program was created as a last and limited resort to allow employers to bring foreign workers to Canada TEMPORARILY to fill jobs for which qualified Canadians are not available. In certain parts of Alberta the labour

shortage has been more of a chronic problem than a temporary one. Notwithstanding, the changes the government introduced most recently in June 2014 were put in place to ensure that Canadians continue to have the first opportunity at available jobs. At no time was the TFW program ever intended to be used as a path to permanent residency. There are other avenues through our immigration policies that are designed to address that need, such as the new Express Entry program which commenced January 1st of this year. It is unfortunate that I did not have the opportunity to speak to the individuals identified in Ms. Mielke’s article. I do not know if they were nominated for Permanent Residency under the Provincial Nominee Program nor do I know if they had looked for opportunities to extend their stay in Canada through other employment opportunities or immigration avenues. I do not know if the outcome would have been different in this case, but perhaps had Ms. Conover contacted my office about these specific individuals a solution may have been found to keep them in Canada. I have always maintained that as the MP for Wetaskiwin I represent the best people that Canada has to offer; we are Industrious, hardworking and determined to suc-

ceed. I will continue to do my best to reduce taxes, invest wisely and build better, stronger and safer communities to the benefit of all. My door is always open, and I remain

yours in service. Please contact my office for assistance on any federal matter. Blaine Calkins, MP

Reader disgusted with government’s decisions regarding immigrants Dear Editor, Is this Canada? The deportation of the Cuban folks amplified my disgust for the federal government’s policies and priorities. I am aware of three other deportations based on an even greater reprehensible criteria. In the cases that I refer to the people are being deported because, their health could become a burden for Canadian taxpayers. Case number one is a mother of four Canadian children. The result is that two children will remain in Canada with their father and two children will go with their mother when she is deported to the USA. The local school will lose two students and the community will lose two warm hearted, hard working adults. The reason for deportation - health could become a burden to Canadian tax payers. Case number two is from CTV At-

lantic. An older married couple is to be deported to the United Kingdom (our mother country) because one developed a kidney problem. Health could become a burden. Case number three (this is unconfirmed and is through word of mouth). A Ponoka resident, working here for 12 years, spent four days in hospital and is being deported to the United Kingdom for the same reason. How many more cases like these can there be across Canada? What will these people say about Canada when they are in their new home? This is another black mark on Canada’s reputation as a caring and compassionate country. Today’s news announced that Canada was welcoming 60 millionaires as immigrants! This is not my Canada. Irene Kurta-Lovell

honorary life members By June Norvila About thirty people attended the Bentley & District Agricultural Society’s annual general meeting on January 8. In the past, the annual meeting had been held in November, but this year the meeting was changed to January to facilitate an audited financial statement. Chairman Jeremy Park gave a welcome and Jennifer Johnson said grace. The meal was again catered by Chelsey McCullum of All Occasions Catering from the Forshee area. Bentley high school student Victoria Pacholko gave a power point presentation and reported on her trip to Ottawa for ‘Encounters With Canada’ which the ag society had sponsored her for. Subcommittee reports were given, and some events are to be expanded for the town’s centennial next year. Some like the RevMasters Car Club and the rodeo committee also reported having given financial donations to help other groups/organizations. Head convener of bench shows, Joan Dickau, reported they think they have a sewing/stitchery convener for the coming year’s fair so that category will be back to join culinary, art, horticulture, handicrafts and school exhibits this

system, and the health care system. A passionate goal of mine was to eliminate the offensive landowner’s Bills (a.k.a. Bills 19, 36, and 50) that stripped away many of the rights of property owners. I also passionately sought to improve Alberta’s [electric] utility services with the passage of Bill201.

I can claim many small achievements in my first term advocating for constituents. However, I am very pleased to have played a pivotal role in the repeal of Bills 19 and 50. I am extremely proud to be the first Independent Member of Alberta’s Legislature to have a Private Member’s Bill pass in 91 years. I am only the second Independent Member in the

history of Alberta’s Legislature to accomplish this feat. Premier Prentice has shown me he has a willingness to protect landowner rights, and I want to build upon his commitment to restoring those rights – fully! The issue of Bill-36 still needs to be addressed. The province is also facing difficult economic times, and constituents

have indicated to me they want someone with experience to represent them in the legislature. My legislative experience has shown that I am able to work with MLAs from all parties to shape good laws and legislation. I have demonstrated that I am a person who can muster and obtain unanimous consent to get legislation

passed. PC party officials have assured me that the nomination process will be fair and open and I have no reason to believe it will be otherwise. It will be an honour to run for the opportunity to represent the people of this constituency again, and advocate for their values in the future as fiercely as I have in the past.

After conducting numerous public town hall meetings, and listening to constituents in both private and public consultations, I hereby announce I will seek the Progressive Conservative (PC) nomination for MLA in the constituency of RimbeyRocky Mountain HouseSundre. The nomination vote will be held on February 21. I entered politics with a commitment to fiscal responsibility and a goal to improve upon Alberta’s educational system, senior’s care system, PDD Care

Library cards free at Rimbey library By Treena Mielke Library cards will now be issued at the Rimbey Muncipal Library free of charge. “I am just thrilled,” said library manager Jean Keetch. “I have always believed they should be free.” The decision to issue free library cards to residents of the Town of Rimbey, Ponoka County and the Summer Village of Parkland Beach was made at the Jan. 21 library meeting. Keetch said it is not usual practice in North America to charge for library cards. She noted fees are only charged in Alberta and a small portion of Quebec. However, an increasingly large number of libraries in Alberta are beginning to offer free library cards including Ponoka library, she added. “While the Rimbey library has always offered free cards to those unable to afford one, the board and staff believe that requiring someone to self identify a need is a barrier in itself. She said the library board agreed that tax dollars fund library services and, therefore, library membership cards and the benefits provided by the card should be free to everyone. Last year the library realized $6,100 from the sale of library cards which sold for $15 for an individual and $25 for a family. However, the library budget showed a small surplus last year and Keetch said the board is hoping the funding will be sustainable for this year. Library board chairman Rowena Aitken said there are numerous other ways residents can support the town’s library. “They can join the Town of Rimbey Library Board, the Rimbey Library Booster Society, shop at our semiannual book sales, or contribute a cash donation that may have been spent on a membership,” she said. “The library can issue tax receipts for donations, she added.

Medicine Lodge Ski Area offers fun for everyone By Treena Mielke While temperatures soared to unseasonably warm highs last Sunday, many families took to the slopes, enjoying the chance to do some skiing or snow boarding in the sunny shirtsleeve weather. Cam and Jill Turnbull and their three boys, Ben, Dylan and Jacob were among the families who traveled to Medicine Lodge Ski Area for the afternoon. The family, who live in Rocky Mountain House, are in fairly close proximity to Medicine Lodge which is located just 11 kilometers west of Bentley on Hwy. 12. “It is great for the boys,” said Jill Turnbull. “They just love it.” Her oldest son, Ben has taken a couple of lessons from ski instructor Colleen Overs who comes out to Medicine Lodge

on Sundays. Turnbull said she is amazed at how quickly the six-year-old caught on to skiing after he had taken the lessons. “He’s already skiing on his own,” she said proudly, as she watched her son, who wasn’t exactly flying down the hill, but who was definitely coming down on his own, make a safe landing at the bottom. Ben’s younger brother, three-year-old Dylan, seemed quite content to go down the hill several time securely attached to his dad with a harness. It will be a few years, no doubt, until the baby, who is nine-months-old, will venture onto the ski hill, but for now he is quite happy to sit in the sunshine with his mom watching his dad and his brothers. The ski hill, run by volunteers, has 13

runs, a main T-bar and two handle tows. At Medicine Lodge there is a chance for everyone to enjoy skiing; the beginning skier who is content to glide down the bunny hills or the more advanced skier who is ready to take on a black diamond run. In an earlier interview, Gina Williams, secretary of the Medicine Lodge Ski Club said the hill is frequented by families from the area as well as larger centers such as Edmonton and Calgary. “So many families come back every year,” she said. “It’s just a wonderful place for everyone to enjoy.” The little ski hill nestled in the rolling hills between Bentley and Rocky Mountain House has served the area well over the years, she noted. About 20 volunteers work at the hill.

Only lift attendants are paid. The hill is open on weekends and throughout some Wolf Creek School holidays. A snowboard instructor, Brandon Lansall is also on staff. Rentals and a concession are available. The hill may stay open until the end of March, depending on the weather. “You never know, relying on Mother Nature the way we do,” said volunteer manager Bob Offet. Day and seasonal passes and rentals are available through cash or cheque. The ski lodge is also on Facebook. Medicine Lodge is presently looking for patrollers who have first aide. For more information contact the lodge at 1-403-7482025.

Some spectacular shots in final draw in Bentley Sylvan Lake’s senior’s bonspiel By June Norvila Extra work was needed to get the ice ready for the Bentley / Sylvan Lake Senior’s Bonspiel held in Bentley January 12-16 because the inside heaters had not shut off during the holidays and had caused some of the ice to melt. And despite some people having to drop out for various reasons, the event still went ahead with a full slate of 32 teams. Seniors like the format that has proven popular over the years. All the curling is daytime, with only one game per day until the playoffs. Cash is paid for each game won. Free food supplied by the members and sponsored coffee is available for the curlers every along with candies to nibble on. Having fun with good competition is the priority. Coming out on top in the Servus Credit Union ‘A’ event was Red Deer’s Norm Crossman rink with last minute skip Don Finch, third Norm Crossman, second Jim Penman, and other subs including Gail Wilson as lead. “We had lots of fun,” said Finch. “Bentley is always a good event.” They defeated the Red Deer Merle Craven foursome in seven ends making Bentley’s Merlyn Wilson third and Red Deer’s Bill Hanrahan fourth. Winning the Cecil Galloway ‘B’ Event

was the local Gary Sparrow team with Sparrow skipping, Michelle Lawrence third, Perry Widdifield second, and Mona Sparrow lead. They defeated the Lacombe Chris Jenson team in seven ends, making Lacombe’s Jim Bruns in third and the local Doug Culshaw team fourth. It was interesting to note that Widdifield also had his own team besides filling in on the Sparrow team so he ended up playing multiple games - at least two each day! “I was lucky the two teams never played at the same time,” said a pumped Widdifield as he explained the two teams always played on different draws. The two finishing on top in the Toothill Holdings Inc. “C” Event were Gord Traverse, Paul Gowans, Bob Nelson, and Mary Vincent from Red Deer who defeated Tom Barker from Sylvan Lake in a good match up. With the score tied 5-5

after regulation play, a throw off with a draw-to-the-button was needed to declare the winner. The other ‘C’ winner was Ken Cookson, Betty Cookson, Ross Crawford, and Florence Douglas from Lacombe who won over the local Gord Mydland team in the most exciting game on the ice in the final draw. The teams were tied 5-5 after seven ends. There were lots of rocks in play. Eighty-eight year old Ken Cookson made a spectacular angle-raise-take out with his last rock and counted two. There was jubilation and disbelief on the ice as an ecstatic third and her skip jumped up and down hugging! When asked afterwards about the shot, an unusually humble Cookson said, “You should report about the shot that our third Betty made yesterday to get us into this game. She partially covered the button in a shoot-out (in a tied

“We had lots of fun, Bentley is always a good event.” Don Finch game to advance us on)!” Two picture perfect shots for them to remember about this year’s ‘spiel. The Finished In Wood ‘D’ Event was played out to the fours making Dale Stannard from Red Deer, Perry Widdifield from Sylvan Lake, Dave Neufeld from Bentley, and Doug Norris from Sylvan Lake the four finalists. A banquet was held in the Bentley Agricultural Centre on Thursday night for curlers and guests and was catered by Rochelle’s Bakes & Cakes. Many door prizes and raffles were drawn for throughout the evening, adding to the fun. Volunteers and the many cash, and door and raffle sponsors, most of who support the event year after year, all help make the ‘spiel the success it is. The Bentley club’s ‘seniors representative, Ralph Scarlett congratulated the winners and thanked everyone for coming when he passed out the final cash prizes in the club lounge.

CALNASH AG EVENT CENTRE FEBRUARY

A father’s response to the outpouring of support for the Dixon family It has been a month since our world was changed with the loss of our two boys, Tristan and Lynus. Not a day goes by when I don’t think about both of them. Every time I drive that same road and pass the Forshee hall sign my mind is forced to recall the events all over again. And yet, throughout it all, Rai and I feel incredibly blessed. The level of compassion and thought shown to my family and me has shown me a side of humanity that we would never have dared to believe possible. Through donations, support and well wishes, my family have been well cared for. Special mention goes to Sandra and Justin at Game On and John Meinema and the rest of Ram Livestock Inc., Oberhammer Funeral and the thousands of people who have pulled together with donations. The financial obligations of a world that doesn’t stop were taken off my shoulders already crushed with loss. The deepest and most sincere words of appreciation pale in comparison to the level of gratitude felt by the two of us. You all have saved what’s left of my family. If I had to leave my loving, terribly hurt and grieving wife in order to deal with work and bills I would be a different man -- a hollow shell, a ghost of a man, of no use to anyone. I wouldn’t have been able to be the man she needed most at this devastatingly pivotal point in our lives. Thanks you everyone. We feel like there is a possibility of a future and we give it all to you. We have been given time to heal and recover. We both want everyone who has donated to my family to know you are our heroes because without you we wouldn’t have been able to see past the dark. You are our candles, you have led us safely home. And the warmth of each small flame has combined to drive the icy chill of sudden death away and warm our hearts.

Thank you all so very much! Angus and Rachel Dixon

THANK YOU

MADDOX Caroline Grace In Loving Memory of Caroline Grace Maddox of Rimbey Alberta who passed away peacefully on January 20th, 2015. Caroline was born in Eckville on September 3, 1940 to Stuart and Laura Chappell of the Gimlet district. Caroline married Tom on May 5, 1959 and soon was mother to three children. After starting married life in Calgary, they returned to the farm in 1962 and worked between Gimlet & the Gilby farm with a short time in Olds while Tom went to College. She was kept very busy once she and Tom moved back from Olds in 1972. She helped raise their three children and managed the farm with Tom while he worked in Eckville. After Tom retired, they began travelling south for winters, making new friends and seeing some beautiful parts of this continent. Caroline was a loving wife, mother, daughter and friend and will be missed by ever-so-many! She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 56 years, Tom, her three children Debbie (Lyle) Burke, Jody Maddox & Anna Marie (Ken) Olive, her grandchildren, Morgan, Lisa, Mack, Laura, Julie, Elijah and Zane, and her brother, Clifford (Fay) Chappell. She was predeceased by her parents, Stuart and Laura Chappell and her grandson Joel Maddox. Caroline felt very blessed in her life - surrounded by a large extended family and more friends than she could count - know that she loved you all. Funeral Services will be held from the Sylvan Lake Memorial Presbyterian Church on Tuesday January 27, 2015 at 2:00 PM with Reverend Jin Woo Kim officiating. Interment will take place in the Gilby Cemetery. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Caroline’s memory may be made directly to David Thompson Health Trust for the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre PO Box 440 Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0. Time slips by and life goes on, but from our hearts you’re never gone. We think about you always, we talk about you too. We have so many memories but we wish we still had you. Forever loving and missing you, Bob, Carmen, Trent, Carson, Ben and Anna

In loving memory of our Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather & Great-Great Grandfather. We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone; for part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide; and though we cannot see you, you are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same; but as God calls us one by one, The Chain will link again. Author Unknown
