Extensive police effort leads to the arrest of four individuals A combined effort by a number of detachments and units including a helicopter resulted in the arrest of four individuals believed to be involved in a break and enter. The incident started just before midnight on Jan 28 when Cranbrook RCMP received a report of an alarm at a local pawnshop. Upon attendance police found the gates open and a number of items missing. Video surveillance indicated at least three subjects wearing gloves and masks were involved. A short time later officers located two suspects at a local motel who were arrested in

served the suspect vehicle coming towards them 177km per hour. Officers activated their emergency equipment in an attempt to stop the vehicle; it did not stop and in fact sped up. Police Dog Services attended and deployed the spike belt on highway 3, just east of Cranbrook, the suspect Jetta managed to evade the belt and continued into Cranbrook. A sec-
ond RCMP member attempted to stop the vehicle but again the vehicle managed to maneuver around the police vehicle. Due to safety concerns the pursuit was terminated as the vehicle continued at a high rate of speed down the Cranbrook strip, running red lights. Extensive patrols failed to locate the black Jetta. Later in the morning the black VW Jetta was
found abandon, which had been stolen out of Alberta, in the Southview area of Cranbrook. Area residents alerted police to two suspects seen in the area. Police converged on the area and were able to locate and arrest one subject. Extensive patrols failed to locate the second subject and police asked residents to be vigilant and call 911 if the subject was seen.

Shortly after noon a resident contacted police when he observed a suspect fitting the descripting checking vehicles. Police headed to the area and while on route noted a grey Ford Pickup leaving the area with the suspect driving. Emergency equipment was activated but the driver failed to stop. Due the erratic driving behavior police did not pursue the suspect but attempted to monitor its location using unmarked units. Numerous units were dispatched to various parts of Cranbrook and highways to contain the area. A local helicopter was deployed and began searching the area. observer was able to direct units on the ground toward the vehicle. The driver then got the truck stuck in the snow, which allowed police to move in without the risk of the driver fleeing. The male was taken into custody with the assistance of a police dog. Police were very concerned about the erratic driving observed and employed a helicopter to safely search and monitor the stolen vehicle to reduce the risk to the public. The investigation is very involved and is still ongoing. Different names and identification has been found and police are in the midst of confirming their identity. Police are also learning that some of the subjects may have
outstanding warrants and could have been involved in other incidents. Three males and one female are facing a number of Criminal Code charges and police plan to hold a bail hearing Friday. S/Sgt Dave Dubnyk, NCO i/c of Cranbrook Detachment says, “this was an excellent combined effort by Cranbrook, Kimberley, Southeast District Traffic Units, Police Dog Service, Forensic Identification Section and General Investigation Section which led to the successful arrest of four individuals. “ Police would like to thank the public for their calls and assistance in locating the suspects.

The Weekday View
Opinion: Time to get a bigger cut for our oil by Brian Coombs Living in the East Kootenay region means that a person spends a lot of time in their car. Whether it is commuting to work or just hitting the backroads to enjoy the country, we put a lot of kilometres on our vehicles. Putting more litres of gas in the car than dollars spent has come as a nice start to 2015. It has also prompted conversations about it being OK to buy a bigger vehicle, and how long will it be until food prices drop. The conversation that isn’t as common is how this could be an opportunity for us as a province and as a country to re-think how we deal with oil—in particular how much revenue we should get from this resource. Giving away our resources for pennies on the dollar is not a new concept for people in this country. We seem to do it all the time, but how we deal with oil is especially egregious. Currently, pretty much the entire industry is owned by private business, with much of that being foreign. Oil-rich Alberta gets about 9 per cent of the profits from the oil sands and the
feds take in about 7 per cent of oil company revenues. Shrink the cost of oil by two thirds or more and the Canadian share of the profits from our resource dwindles to next to nothing. Contrast that with Norway. That country’s oil reserves account for nearly 25 per cent of its revenue, as opposed to the 5 per cent it accounts for in Canada. Because it is that important to their economy, from the beginning the government felt that they had to get their ducks in a row; and they did. Norway owns outright about 80 per cent of its petroleum production. It also, through tax and direct access rules, keeps around 85 per cent of its petroleum revenues. Because of this, the country is approaching $1 trillion in oil revenues in the bank. This cash is invested globally and the country holds referendums to ask the people how they want to spend the dividends. That country stands as a shining counter-point to the people who say that the large resource extraction companies require huge tax breaks before investing. This point needs to be made. With the current
low oil prices we will soon be hearing politicians talking about further tax “incentives” for the industry because they are hurting. And this deal for a further decrease in tax for our resource will outlast the present situation. Instead the conversation should be about getting a new deal. Less revenues brought into the country mean the interests that control the oil dollars have less clout. This course of action would require some hard bargaining on our part but it can be done. Canada, and in particular B.C. is not a one-trick pony. We produce most of our power through hydro projects. We have immense forests, vast mineral deposits and a population that would love to ramp up our manufacturing capabilities. With these assets as leverage, we could exercise our rights in a free market to demand at the very least, the best possible deal for our resources. That’s just sound fiscal management. Knowing that it is our province and our country that is getting wealthy from a well-bargained deal on oil revenues will definitely take the sting away when prices at the pumps inevitably rise. On the other hand, we could just go out and buy a really, really big truck.

Members of the South Country Fire Service will be in the community of Elko Tuesday evening as the “Elko Fire Volunteer Firefighter Recruitment Drive” gets underway. “We will have some of our volunteers from the Jaffray and Baynes Lake Departments out in the community doing a door to door awareness campaign, answering questions and providing information,” explains RDEK South Country Fire Services Fire Chief Dave Boreen. “We also have two community presentations lined up at the Elko Community Hall – one on Wednesday evening and one on Saturday morning to
help get the word out and encourage people to fill out application forms.” Wednesday, February 4th, they are hosting a beef-on-a-bun community dinner from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm with a short presentation at 6:30 pm about being a volunteer fire fighter for the new Elko Fire Department. On Saturday, February 7th, there will be an equipment expo from 9:30 am to 10:30 am with trucks and equipment on display, followed by a presentation at 10:30 am. “Both events are free and open to the entire community. We will be having colouring pages for the kids and we would like
to see a strong turnout from the community.” The most critical need right now is to have volunteers signed up and getting trained. Application forms are available on the RDEK’s website and at the Jaffray Fire Hall, along with a number of community members in Elko. Packages will also be available during the door to door campaign, and at both community events next week. The deadline for applications to be submitted is February 20, 2015. In addition to securing volunteers for the department, the RDEK will be gathering the equipment needed and constructing a new fire hall. Until all these pieces are in place, there is no fire protection in Elko. The RDEK hopes to have the fire protection service established in the fall of 2015.

Non antibiotic treatment forclostridium difficile
Clostridium difficile is a bacteria that is found in air, soil, water, human and animal faces and contaminated food products like processed meats. Hospitals and health care facilities are the most common reservoir of this pervasive organism and most people who get sick with it do so as a result of taking antibiotics and being in a health care facility. C. diff. is typically passed from feces to food, surfaces and objects when people who are infected don't wash their hands thoroughly. The bacteria produces spores that can live on a surface for weeks or months and if you touch the contaminated surface you many unknowingly swallow the spore which then starts reproducing in your bowel. Community associated C. diff., infection caused not in health care settings, is becoming more common and is affecting younger and healthier people not typically associated with the infection. Once established, the organism produces toxins that attack the bowel wall causing symptoms ranging from mild diarrhea and cramping to severe diarrhea, pain, fever, nausea, blood in the stool and kidney failure. A small number of people carry the microbe in their bowel and do not have any symptoms whatsoever. These carriers can pass the organism on to someone else who can get sick with the bug. Your intestines contain billions of bacteria, most of which are
called "probiotics" because the promote health and protect you from infection. When you take antibiotics for an infection the antibiotic kills off many of the probiotics leaving your bowel vulnerable to an organism like Clostridium difficile which can quickly grow out of control. Overuse of antibiotics is certainly associated with the increasing rates of Clostridium difficile. Should you contract this organism, you have effective treatment options other than antibiotics. First, clean up your diet by avoiding sugars and refined foods. Eat a hypoallergenic diet of vegetables, fruit, poultry, fish and small amounts of whole grains. Second, give the Clostridium difficile some competition by taking a very good probiotic supplement and an organism called Saccharomyces boulardii. The latter is a fungal organism that is key for your bowel to remain healthy, particularly if you have antibiotic associated diarrhea. Third, take a supplement like Chlorgen, chlorella pyrenoidosa, which soaks up and binds the toxins released by C. diff. that trigger the bowel irritation. In most cases this approach will work nicely without damaging your healthy bacteria and making you more susceptible to another bowel infection. As with any potentially serious health condition, seek the guidance of a health care provider.

An Opinion on Advertising... “Advertisements go where personal salesmen and even letters can’t hope to go, and they have a profound influence on readers of them - they soften resistance, dissolve apathy, create confidence and goodwill, and direct the steps of buyers. Buyers also go, in largest numbers, and of their own free will, to those stores which spend a lot of money on advertising.” —An excerpt from The Times, from Alliance, Alberta, 1932

Obituaries
OBITUARY Jacob Goodman 1929 - 2015 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jacob Goodman on Monday, January 26, 2015 in Cranbrook, BC. Jake was born on May 30, 1929 in Champion, AB to Jacob and Pauline Goodman. He was the youngest of five children. Our dad was a member of the East Kootenay Shrine Club #4 in Cranbrook and was very proud of his affiliation. Dad loved to play golf and after his retirement from Goodman Diesel he learned to fly ultra light planes. Jake was predeceased by his parents, three brothers and one sister: William, Ronald, Elizabeth and Samuel. He is survived by his children Donna-Leigh, Lori (Paul), Doug, Richard and Anniel (John); four grandchildren Kirstie, Farran, Kevin and Michael; and his partner Dawn. A special thank you to the staff at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital, especially Dr. Shilhan, who were so kind to our dad and our family during this difficult time. Dad left this world on his own terms and can now finally breathe with ease. As per Jake's wishes, there will be no memorial service. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com

Québecois roots to the wider world, in both arrangements and on stage. Considered a driving force in progressive folk, Le Vent du Nord captures the energy and mirth of a Saturday
night kitchen party, infusing old Québec with a breath of fresh, cosmopolitan air. Since its founding in 2002, Le Vent du Nord have become compelling Francophone ambassadors, winning criti-

cal acclaim and audience adoration across Europe and North America. The quartet has performed well over 1,000 concerts, racking up several prestigious awards, including a Grand Prix du Disque Charles Cros, two Junos, a Canadian Folk Music Award, and ‘Artist of the Year’ at the North American Folk Alliance Annual Gala. In addition to their traditional repertoire, the group exhibits great finesse and flexibility, appearing regularly on Canadian, American, French, and UK television and radio, and participating in a wide variety of special musical projects. They’ve collaborated and performed with Harry Manx, Väsen, The Chieftains, Breton musical pioneer Yann-Fañch Kemener, Québecois roots legend and master storyteller Michel Faubert, hip Scottish folk band Breabach, and the transMediterranean ensemble Constantinople. Not content with standard approaches to tradition, Le Vent du Nord have also created a symphonic concert, presented by the respected Portland Symphony Orchestra and Québec Symphony Orchestra, that “puts all traditional folk naysayers to shame” (Voir Montreal). Having given the La Part du Feu concert 250 times in North America, Europe, South America, and Scandinavia, Le Vent du Nord presents a new show with the songs of Tromper le temps (Fooling Time), its 7th album (released in Spring 2012). Made up of 4 singers and multi-instrumentalists, Le Vent du Nord returns to its roots, drawing from yesterday and today to give us a glimpse the hopes of possible tomorrows. Through songs meant to resist the march of time, the Tromper le temps concert evokes often forgotten episodes of Québec’s history with provocative texts and poetic descriptions destined to endure throughout the ages. Tickets for are now on sale for the February 10 Le Vent du Nord performance at Key City Theatre. Show time is 7:30 pm and seats are priced at $35 and $30 for Key City Theatre members. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Box Office at 250-4267006 or online at www. keycitytheatre.com
