The purpose of the horse wrangling program is to keep feral horses away from highway right of ways, where they can pose a safety concern.

he Yukon Workers’ Compensation Health and Safety Board has fined the Yukon government $5,000 after the investigation into the death of Arnold Johnson.

Johnson, 57, was wrangling feral horses near Kusawa Lake on January 26, 2014 as part of a team hired by the Yukon government’s agriculture branch.

As the three workers attempted to close the rail fence around the horses, the animals bolted.

One horse charged the fence and became tangled in a metal panel that Johnson was standing behind.

He was knocked to the ground, and the horse rolled over him.

“Mr. Johnson struck his head on the frozen ground and was immediately unconscious,” according to the coroner’s report

ukon Zinc has announced a temporary shut-down of the Wolverine mine.

“The metal prices in the past months have significantly affected our revenues and the Wolverine mine does not realize cash positive to sustain its operations,” wrote CEO Jingyou Lu in a letter to suppliers on Jan. 23.

The plan is to shut down for two or three months, and then re-evaluate the company’s position.

The news comes just as Yukon’s politicians, mining execs and First Nation leaders are in Vancouver trying to drum up interest in the territory in a gloomy investment climate at the annual Mineral Exploration Roundup conference.

Exploration spending in the territory has fallen from a high of $332 million in 2011 to $88 million in 2014, according to recent numbers from Natural Resources Canada.

With Wolverine shuttered, Capstone Mining Corp’s Minto mine is the last active producer in the territory.

Yukon Zinc has had difficulty securing funding from shareholders to pay down its debts to suppliers, according to the letter.

“As a result, we’re still unable to provide a payment plan to pay down the balance owed as previously agreed.”

However, the company is still in a position to pay its debts, and financing discussions are ongoing, according to the letter, which promises an update by Feb. 16.

The Town of Watson Lake is already feeling the pinch, said Mayor Richard Durocher in an interview this week.

“We’re noticing it in town. It’s a lot quieter. There’s not as much activity as there was before.”

Forty or 50 Watson Lakers are expected to lose their jobs directly or indirectly as a result of the shutdown, he said.

“That’s a substantial amount of loss in employment for a community this size.”

The town is just hoping that the mine gets back into production soon, said Durocher.

“They’ve announced a 90-day shut-down, but we’ve seen these trends before, and 90 days come and go and there’s never a reactivation of the facility. That’s the big worry of people in the community right now.

The mine is currently using up stockpiled ore, supplemented by underground operations, while it waits for the Yukon Water Board to issue an amended water licence for the project.

A hearing will likely take place in March, and it could be another six weeks after that before a permit is issued, said Light.

Those sources of ore could run out in the next 12-18 months, he said.

And falling copper prices add a further layer of uncertainty.

“We’re looking at, do we want to run just stockpile? Do we want to invest money to pre-strip Minto North, when we do get a licence?

It’s a hard decision, based on the economics of the industry right now and commodity prices.

••• First Nations are in Vancouver this week, too, asserting their wish to lead the conversation when it comes to mining development in the Yukon.

Last night Yukon’s 11 self-governing First Nations hosted a meetand-greet event to discuss issues and common goals with the mining industry.

“It was excellent. It was very well received,” said Council of Yukon First Nations Grand Chief Ruth Massie in an interview this morning.

“We let everybody know that we want a positive working relationship with them.”

One of the main topics of discussion was First Nation opposition to a federal bill that will amend Yukon’s environmental assessment legislation.

First Nations say some of the proposed changes will undermine their participation in assessments, and are contrary to the final agreements they signed with Yukon and Canada.

“All the Yukon First Nations are speaking with a common voice,” said Eric Fairclough, chief of the Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation, in an interview this morning.

The mining industry responded very positively to their message, he said.

“They feel that this is really throwing a wrench in things.”

The unsigned Kaska nations, too, are asserting their right to guide development on their traditional lands.

The Council of Kaska Chiefs announced yesterday its intention to write legislation that will govern development on large swaths of Yukon, B.C., and the Northwest Territories.

The announcement is about giving mining companies certainty, in terms of laying out precisely what they must do in order to achieve First Nation consent for their projects, said Brian Ladue, chief of the Ross River Dena Council, in an interview yesterday.

“We’re asserting ourselves as a government and saying that these are laws that should be recognized just as the Yukon government laws are recognized,” he said.

“With the recent court decisions and such, it’s been established that for any project to go forward in our traditional territory, that requires our consent.”

So far, mining companies working in the area have been very supportive of the idea, said Ladue.

“They thought it was a brilliant idea. We heard from them that that is what’s needed in the Yukon.”

••• The mining industry news this week is not all doom and gloom.

BMC (UK) Ltd. announced this week the purchase of the Kudz Ze Kayah project from Teck Resources Ltd. “We spent just about 18 months looking around the world at different projects that had the right blend of geology, location, political risk, community support, that kind of thing,” said BMC CEO Scott Donaldson in an interview yesterday.

The opportunity to buy Kudz Ze Kayah came up and they took it, he

said.

“It was the precise type of project that we were looking for.”

Kudz Ze Kayah is a base metals project, with deposits of zinc, copper, lead, silver and gold. It is located between Ross River and Watson Lake, and neighbours the Wolverine mine.

The company is backed by Barclays Natural Resource Investments, which has committed $150 million in equity funding for the project.

That will cover the purchase of property plus things like feasibility studies, engineering and environmental assessments, said Donaldson.

The company plans to spend about $15 million developing the property this year, he said.

Things might not look great for the industry today, but that won’t always be the case, said Donaldson.

“Mining industry people are generally optimists, and the mining industry is cyclical. So the last year or so hasn’t been great for the mining industry but we’re confident in the long term future and we’re in a fortunate position to be able to take a longer view.”

The company has done a great job communicating with the Ross River Dena Council so far, said Chief Brian Ladue.

“This is a perfect example of the industry going with the new way that business should be done in our traditional territory. They came to us right at the beginning and sat down at the table and had open discussion on what the project is about.”

Burwash brothers sentenced for unlawful confinement Myles Dolphin News Reporter

wo Burwash Landing brothers have been sentenced for their role in unlawfully confining Collin Johnson in the summer of 2013, an incident that continues to divide the isolated community.

Wilfred Sheldon, a former Kluane First Nation chief, was sentenced to 18 months probation while Derek Johnson received a six-month conditional sentence as well as 12 months’ probation.

Sheldon, 39, must remain in the Yukon and complete 50 hours of community service while Johnson, 33, must com-

plete 20 hours of community service.

The men must also take part in the restorative justice process outlined in Southern Tutchone traditional law, which will unfold over the coming months.

It may never be fully clear what happened on the night of Aug. 8, 2013.

A one-day trial last year featured two witnesses, one of whom was Austin Dickson, who testified both Sheldon and Johnson held Collin against his will following a party they attended.

The next day, Collin appeared to have bruises, Dickson told the court.

The teen’s death has weighed heavily on the community.

One man, Weldon Danroth, is already serving an 18-month sentence for beating up Derek Johnson in an act of vigilante justice.

Last July, defence lawyer David Tarnow successfully argued there would be a real risk of violence if the trial was allowed to take place in the community.

Yukon Supreme Court Justice Ron Veale agreed and the trial was moved to Whitehorse.

Justice Colleen Kenny found the brothers guilty of unlawful confinement in October.

At Friday’s sentencing, several of Collin’s relatives submitted written victim impact statements. Letters of support for the brothers were also taken into consideration.

Kluane First Nation council sent along a resolution it had passed on Jan. 15, in which it stated it would not be wise to allow the two individuals back into the community.

Ruth Carroll, Collin’s grandmother, and Alyce Johnson, an aunt to both families, made oral statements in court.

Carroll talked about her grandson’s character and his dream of seeing Burwash Landing become a “good place.”

“He was a good kid who had a short life but he did wonderful things,” she said.

“He was quiet but fun to be around. It’s good to know he loved Burwash Landing.”

Carroll also spoke about following in Collin’s footsteps and focusing on community healing.

She said parts from many of the statements were inadmissible because they “went far beyond the criminal code” and did not focus on the incident itself.

Although there is a sense that Collin’s suicide was a direct result of his confinement, one must only look at the facts of the incident, Kenny told a packed courthouse.

“Many of you will be disappointed with this sentence,” she said.

“Unfortunately our justice system cannot solve the problems in your community. You have the power and the responsibility to make the community whole again, for the sake of you and your children.”

When given a chance to speak, neither Sheldon nor Johnson took the opportunity.

Ta’an Kwach’an Council chief rescinds resignation Myles Dolphin News Reporter

C

hief Kristina Kane is back at the helm of the Ta’an Kwach’an Council.

Kane, who resigned from the position on Jan. 9 citing concerns for her personal health and safety, announced on Friday that she had a change of heart.

According to a TKC news release, her decision was largely influenced by a ruling from the First Nation’s judicial council.

The council, made up of two judges, had been tasked with reviewing Kane’s eligibility as chief following a complaint made by a TKC citizen on April 29 last year.

The complaint alleged that Kane had violated the First Nation’s constitution by acting as director, and then chief, since 2009 despite having a criminal record.

Last July, documents obtained by the News revealed that Kane had been twice charged with theft under $5,000 and sentenced to six months probation in 1998.

Kane was 19 years old when she was caught stealing shoes from a store in Burnaby, B.C. on March 29, 1997. Later that year, on Dec. 31, she was caught stealing cigarettes from a store in Whitehorse.

The constitution of the TKC states that citizens are not eligible to be chief if they have been convicted of an indictable offence or of theft, fraud or false pretences.

Kane, meanwhile, had insisted that she had submitted all the required documentation when she ran for chief.

She initially said she believed she had obtained a pardon, because she’d been able to produce RCMP criminal record checks from 2010, 2012 and 2014 that showed she had no prior convictions.

She claimed the paperwork had been lost in the mail because she changed addresses so often over the years.

According to the judicial council ruling, Kane received confirmation from the Parole Board of

Rather than immediately inform the TKC board or the elders council of this, she waited four months, until Sept. 23, to do so in a memo.

The TKC constitution gives the judicial council the right to remove a member of the board if they are found to be compromising the dignity or effectiveness of their position.

The council ruled that Kane had compromised the dignity, but not the effectiveness, of her position to such a degree that action had

to be taken. “The primary burden of disclosure rests with Ms. Kane, who knowingly withheld salient information once she had been made aware that she did not possess a pardon,” it stated.

Last Thursday, the council ruled that Kane should be suspended from her position until she could produce a record of pardon, which she did that day, according to the release.

As a result, she was allowed to resume her duties as chief.

Kane applied for her pardon in October. It remains unclear when she obtained it.

Kane declined to be interviewed by the News. She instead asked for questions to be emailed to her. She did not answer them before press time.

The RCMP’s Cpl. Natasha Dunmall said there are a few explanations as to why convictions would not appear on a criminal record when a pardon had not been is-

sued.

Theft under $5,000 may be treated as either a summary conviction, as was the case with Kane, or as a more serious indictment.

Summary convictions don’t appear on criminal record checks.

Kane’s three-year term ends in October.

ere are a few fond memories I have of Ted Harrison, that happy, jolly man.

My youngest brother Roland and I first saw a short man smiling as he came up the road to our mom and dad’s home in Beaver Creek.

This was in August of 1972, when I was 26.

“Roland, do you know who that is?” I asked. “No,” he said, so we just sat still, holding our guitars.

Still smiling, he said, “Aye there, laddies, hot day, today.”

He looked at me and asked, “Would you be Stan Peters the artist?”

“Yes I am, why? And who are you?”

“I’m Ted Harrison, me laddie, and I’ve come from Whitehorse. I work at the government’s vocational training and technical centre as the arts and crafts instructor. You see, I was told at the Yukon Native Brotherhood that I should go and look you up, to see if you can come and attend the arts and crafts class for 10 and a half months with me. I’ve already gone to other artists.”

I smiled at Ted and tried to put him down. I said matterof-factly, “I bet you wouldn’t even be here, driving 284 miles one way, if the government didn’t pay for your mileage, meals and room, right?”

“Oh no,” he said. “No one’s paying me, not a penny. I came up here to see if you’d just give me a chance, to see if I might help you to learn more arts and crafts. No, Stan, I paid for everything out of my own pocket. You see, you

were spoken about very highly, they thought the world of you and your art. That’s why I came all the way up here to talk with you.”

“Well, OK, Ted, let me think about what you’ve said.

Then, when September comes and if you see me in your class, that means I’m here, as I’ve committed myself to attend your classes. But if you don’t see me, do not wait for me, because that means I’m not interested and am doing a job someplace, OK?” And so with that, he says, “OK, me laddie, I’ll see you in class.” I thought, “So sure of yourself. We’ll see.”

I ended up attending his classes. They were very interesting and always full of fun and laughter and also seriousness.

My first small carving was a 15-foot totem pole. Later, Ted told me that as soon as they put it up for sale at Yukraft, it only sat there for 15 minutes before it was sold.

My pottery crafts also sold quickly, so I could never keep up. No matter the demand, it had to be perfect to me or I wouldn’t put it up for sale.

Then, just before Christmas of 1972, I met with Ted and a couple of Yukon government reps who said that Skookum Jim Friendship Centre wanted to know if we could come up with a totem pole carving for them. I went to see this huge, long spruce tree still with its bark and limbs, lying on some sawhorses. It was so huge and hard looking, I felt small and intimidated.

“This is what they want me to carve? The hardest wood in the Yukon? Look at it!” I thought.

Next morning I said, “Give me until 11 p.m. every day, including weekends. Tell your janitor not to bother me, and I will have the carving done by the last day of Sourdough Rendezvous.’”

Ted, bless his soul, said, “Oh, no, Stanley, it’ll be late spring at the earliest!” I said again the same words, but added at the end, “And I’ll have it done by 3 p.m., a halfhour before putting it up in Rotary Park.”

No one believed me, so when 1973’s Sourdough Rendezvous catalogue of events came out, everything was in there, except the raising of the totem pole. Half an hour before 3 p.m. I was putting the finishing touches on it, while about 40 students were waiting for me to say, “OK, I’m done, take it out!”

Well the Skookum Jim Friendship Totem Pole stands proudly in Rotary Peace Park ever since 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 28, 1973 – enjoy it.

I called it “the very first totem pole ever carved in the Yukon, since time began.” And that’s the truth. Thank you, Ted, for believing in me.

NorthwesTel shouldn’t discriminate against its rural customers I currently live in Teslin, and I am a NorthwesTel dissatisfied customer.

I recently had both home phone and Internet service with them. But because I already have a cell phone, I have little need for a home phone.

Until recently, NorthwesTel forced me to keep my home phone to be able to have DSL. But they changed this where I no longer require a home phone to maintain my standalone DSL service. Which is good. But then they’ve slapped a $20/month fee for this!

As if this wasn’t bad enough, this fee is only applied to NorthwesTel’s rural customers. Customers who live in Whitehorse and Yellowknife are not charged this or any fee if they only want standalone DSL. Why is it that NorthwesTel is discriminating against its rural customers?

If they insist on a fee for standalone DSL, then it should apply to all their customers no matter where they live.

Better yet, there should be no fee for this service, as is currently done only for customers in Whitehorse and Yellowknife.

Can’t be coy about fracking forever

T

his past week the Yukon legislature’s select committee regarding the risks and benefits of hydraulic fracturing released its final report. In the dry and predictable tradition of such studies, it stated the obvious (by saying stuff like the government should respect its agreements with First Nations) and recommended further study of the issue.

The governing Yukon Party was quick to lambast what it has taken to calling the “Opposition coalition” for “siding together to stifle yet another industry in Yukon” and not waiting “for the committee’s work to be done before taking a position.” In contrast, the government has promised to “take the necessary time to do an in-depth analysis.”

The accusation that the NDP in particular has jumped the gun in coming out against fracking is a little silly. Two NDP members were on the committee, so the released report would not have contained any surprises for them. And, since the committee was charged to “consider whether hydraulic fracturing can be done safely if properly regulated,” it can’t be a surprise that the New Democrats have formed a conclusion on just that.

home inspector’s report tells me that the foundation is cracked, I’m really not that interested in the debate over whether the roof also needs to be redone. I’ve heard enough, and I walk away.

I suspect the NDP’s thinking on fracking falls along similar lines.

But it’s the Yukon Party’s lack of a position that I find most interesting.

Is “take the necessary time to do an in-depth analysis” politician-speak for “be coy on the subject and wait until after the next election to reveal our intentions”? I hope not, but the Yukon Party has certainly set the stage to do just that.

The committee agreed that there needs to be further study and the collection of baseline

data on, among other things, the impact of fracking on ground water, permafrost, seismic activity, overall greenhouse gas emissions, wildlife and human health.

Essentially the committee has called for further study on pretty well every concern raised with respect to fracking – hardly a quick and simple task, especially considering the glacial pace at which we are accustomed to the Yukon government operating.

Further study is not necessarily a bad thing. The burden of proof clearly lies with those who would like to conduct fracking to prove that it is safe. When you propose pumping various unidentified chemicals into the earth, it is on you to show that those chemicals won’t make its

way into my drinking water, not on me to show that they will.

But the question is when will the Yukon Party have enough information to make a decision?

Before the next election? After?

I would implore the Yukon Party not to do what it did with the Peel watershed. If it wants to take further time to study fracking, by all means it should do so.

An important decision like this should not be taken lightly.

But make sure you respect the voters. It is clear that there is significant, palpable opposition to fracking in the territory, and before we allow it to take place within our borders the voters should get an opportunity to weigh in through a territorial election.

What’s the price of the Peel appeals?

Open letter to Premier Darrell Pasloski: The Yukon Party’s Jan. 14 news release states: “the Yukon Party government and Premier Pasloski continue to stand up for Yukoners who want accountable, responsible governments.”

While many Yukoners doubt this to be true, there is an opportunity for the premier to prove this is an honest statement – tell Yukoners how much taxpayers’ money his government is spending on the Peel regional plan’s legal process.

Like many Yukoners, I too want an accountable government.

In recent times, the Yukon Party government has spent a lot of money on the Peel legal process it precipitated by ignoring the terms and conditions of the Yukon land claim agreements, which form part of the Constitution of Canada.

If it is true that the premier

wants accountable, responsible government, then he should immediately provide answers to the following four questions: 1. How much taxpayers’ money did your Yukon Party government pay to law firms for the Yukon Supreme court action that the Yukon Government lost in the Peel case?

2. How much has your government budgeted to pay law firms for the Court of Appeal challenge to the Yukon Supreme Court decision?

3. What is the cost of Department of Justice, cabinet office and other department staff time for the Yukon Supreme Court action?

4. What is the estimated cost to the Department of Justice, cabinet office and other department staff time for the Court of Appeal action?

I note that I could not find any contracts with law firms involved in the Peel case, including with John L. Hunter, Q.C.,

posted on the Yukon government’s contract registry.

If Premier Pasloski and the Yukon Party are being truthful about wanting accountable government, then they should immediately post all these contracts for all Yukoners to see them. After all, construction, service and other contracts are posted on the registry, so why is the government hiding these legal services contracts?

Too many injured workers When I recently passed the Yukon Workers’ Compensation Health and Safety Board building, the “injuries count” was at 51. I am shocked that so many workers had been injured in what was then less than 17 regular working days this year.

We are not keeping one another safe at work.

Workers: get trained, wear the proper equipment, follow safety procedures and protect each other.

Employers: make sure your employees are appropriately trained, that they follow procedures and that they use the safety equipment you provide.

Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Let’s bend the trend.

Cathers served Yukon’s rural paramedics well I don’t do politics, and I admit when it comes to dealing with what I perceive to be BS my “PC” filter rarely works. I was raised with the ideal that a man has to earn your trust and to not to blindly put your trust in the position he holds.

The election of the Yukon Party back in 2011 is not a mandate for fracking, and nor will an election in 2015 or 2016 serve as such a mandate if the government is coy about its intentions until after it is done.

Voters should get to weigh in on the basis of clear options conveyed in an honest and forthright manner by their politicians without the usual platitudes and generalities. Before the last election we knew little more about the government’s plan for the Peel than that it wanted the draft plan prepared by the commission to be simplified, and more “balanced” – whatever that means.

Before the next election we should receive from the Yukon Party either a clear position on fracking in the Yukon or a promise not to make a decision until after a subsequent election.

Without one or the other, it will ring hollow if the government claims to be defending the right of the “democratically elected Yukon government” to allow fracking in the territory, as it is now doing with the Peel.

Between elections the practical reality is that (subject to consultation with affected First Nations) the Yukon government has “the authority to make final decisions on public lands.” But we should expect our politicians to treat democracy as a principle and not simply a process. It is the people, not the government, that should have final say.

This is an issue which we should have an opportunity to vote on. We can only hope that the Yukon Party does the right thing.

Navigating the idea of northernness Meg Walker Special for the News

W

hitehorse artist Joyce Majiski spent 14 years as a wilderness guide, so she’s skilled at helping people know where they are and where they are headed.

But as her current exhibition North of Myth reveals, on a personal level she remains fascinated with finding the edges of individual and geographic knowledge.

Majiski is one of the Yukon’s most established artists, known especially for her printmaking and her nuanced depictions of wildlife. Whales, caribou, bison, wolves and, surprisingly, jellyfish, accompany lichen, ocean and stone formations in this current multimedia and mixedmedia exhibition at the Yukon Arts Centre. Sculpture, artist books and a glacier-inspired installation round out the space.

In her 30 years of Yukon living, Majiski has frequently explored themes of northernness. Her work has become increasingly collaborative as she asks herself and others what “northernness” means to them.

This Thursday, the community-minded artist has invited four Yukon poets to read their northern-inspired writing, surrounded by the North of Myth artwork.

Host Ellen Bielawski is a non-fiction writer with a doctorate in Arctic archeology who has worked across Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, Alaska and the Yukon. Her perspective on North will provide intriguing introductions for readings by Erling Friis-Baastad, Joanna Lilley, Michael Eden Reynolds and Clea Roberts.

Many works in the exhibition are inspired by Majiski’s experiences in 2013 on the Arctic Circle Residency. The two-week residency on a tall ship out of Norway took Majiski and 26 other artists (including Whitehorse painter Jane Isakson) from Svalbard to within 966 kilometres of the North Pole.

The ship made daily shoreline stops for exploration. In the evenings, guides gave talks about the history, flora and fauna of the area. Majiski was struck by how explorers in the Svalbard area were eager to go beyond known coordinates, even though it was a location without an indigenous or other continuous population.

When the group visited the remains of a centuries-old explorers’ building, Majiski notes, she thought: “That sense of not knowing where you were – not knowing if you were going to fall off the edge of the earth –

that wasn’t that long ago. To truly, truly not know where you were in the world would have been a really interesting thing.”

After the high seas, Majiski expanded her longstanding love of old maps with a residency in Can Serrat, Spain. The space was smaller than she’d expected, so she was not able to start printmaking. Instead, she began putting ideas together on the computer and drawing out many variations of compass roses.

Then a link between Norway and Spain surfaced and inspired the printmaker to plunge into poetry more than ever before. The Svalbard archipelago contains Magdalena Fjord, laced with historical sites from Norway’s whaling, and the Arctic Circle Residents visited some of these. In Spain, Majiski visited an aquarium with displays about whaling history and ideas started to come together.

“The whaling places are a lot of rock and ice, not a lot of vegetation, but in one space there was all this moss that was a vibrant green,” she says. In her journals she noted learning that, over the years, oil spilled by whalers created the micro ecosystem that fed the moss.

The second show at the Yukon Arts Centre also speaks to collaboration and mutual support. Alchemy of Collaboration by California artist Zea Morvitz showcases both Morvitz’s vivid ink drawings and two major collaborative projects with Majiski. LIFE The heat is on After growing up in Whitehorse’s kitchens, Nathan Young is competing in MasterChef Canada Myles Dolphin News Reporter

W

hen the Young family drove to Haines, Alaska in the summer of 1990, they had little idea of the impact the trip would one day have on their son.

It was that July, at the annual Southeast Alaska State Fair, that seven-year old Nathan first discovered a fondness for fish and chips.

“In the three days we were there I must have had it 50 times,” he said.

Almost 25 years later, it inspired him to come up with a fish and chips recipe of his own, one that would ultimately land him a spot on season two of MasterChef Canada.

The 31-year-old Toronto resident, whose day job is in marketing for a men’s grooming company, is one of 49 finalists vying to be crowned Canada’s next top chef.

It’s a varied bunch. Other finalists range from a rural veterinarian to a bartender to a tax officer.

Growing up in Whitehorse, Young spent a lot of time in kitchens around the city.

His father, a cook, plied his trade at Trails North, the Gold Rush Inn and the Chilkoot Trail Inn, among other places.

“I saw how hard he worked and how passionate he was, it really inspired me,” Young said.

“Cooking has always been in my family. It’s always sort of been a hobby of mine and it’s probably only in the past few years that I’ve started taking it more seriously.”

When Young moved from the Yukon to Toronto at age 21, he was soon exposed to a wide variety of cuisines and foods he’d never tasted before. “I didn’t eat a

Young discovered Korean food, and barbecue in particular, which became his favourite cuisine.

Kimchi, a spicy cabbage served with almost every Korean meal, is one of the foods Young learned to love.

“It smells like a used sock but once you start eating it, you just want more,” he said.

Young has a friend who took part in season one of the television show and who encouraged him to try out for it.

He told him it was a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity and there was no sense in having any regrets.

After Young auditioned for a culinary team in Toronto last year, he received a call from the MasterChef Canada producers a few months later telling him he’d been accepted on the show.

Then, he auditioned for a panel of judges – Michael Bonacini, Alvin Leung, and Claudio Aprile – and made the cut.

Although he can’t reveal too many details about the show itself, he said he was surprised by the level of competition from his peers.

“A lot of people took time off to study with a professional chef,” he said.

“I’m just a guy from the Yukon who likes to cook for his wife. It was one of the most challenging but also rewarding things I’ve done in my life.

“It was an amazing experience and I met some great people there.”

With the show behind him, Young said he isn’t sure about whether he wants to make a career out of cooking.

If the opportunity presented itself, it’s something he’d seriously consider, he said.

Juneau Capitals launch big comeback for Yukon gold

Alaska’s Juneau Capitals let the gear fly in jubilation after winning gold at the championships on Sunday at Takhini Arena.

They were excited and for good reason.

“It’s the first time they’ve ever won any type of tournament or championship ever since they started hockey,” said Capitals head coach Ian Leary. “So they’re very excited.”

Making their win all the more exciting, the visiting Capitals overcame a three-goal deficit to defeat Whitehorse’s Peewee Mustangs.

Juneau won 5-4 in overtime.

The Peewee Mustangs left the medal ceremony looking rather dejected.

“I think they’re upset because A, they lost, and B, they were up by three goals,” said Mustangs head coach Kirk Gale. “But that’s why we play these games and that’s why we play these tournaments. Our goal is provincials. If they get that taste in their mouth that they don’t like, hopefully they can learn from their mistakes. That’s what it’s all about.

“They have to get in these pressure situations and from time to time they have to execute the things we’re trying to teach them.”

Mustangs centre Kyron Crosby scored in the first and second

periods – assisted by Eric Potvin and Kyle Bierlmeier – to go up 2-0.

Crosby was named his team’s Player of the Game in the final.

“A lot of disappointment, but we played hard,” said Crosby. “We went out thinking we weren’t going to win, to be honest, because we played this team and they put up a pretty good fight and a lot of our guys were really nervous. They never felt this excitement and emotion before.”

Mustangs defenceman Cole Cowan then made it 3-0 on a long shot through traffic from the blue line, with assists from Ashton Underhill and Errol Ekholm.

Juneau pulled within one by the end of the second on two goals from Bill Bosse.

Whitehorse pocketed their final goal on a cross-ice pass from Crosby to Wyatt Sheardown-Waugh in front. Defenceman Kyle Schwantz also got an assist on the play.

The Capitals tied it 4-4 in the third on goals from Cullen Corrigan and Bosse. It was evident to anyone watching that a shift in momentum was complete and in Juneau’s favour.

“As tired as we were, we seemed to get more tired because of that,” said Gale. “The mental game begins at that point.”

Bosse scored his fourth of the game with 49 seconds left in overtime, on a quick shot through the five-hole. He was named his team’s Player of the Game.

“They’re used to being in positions like that,” he said. “They don’t quit, they play hard the whole game.

“At a lot of tournaments, our skill level is lower than the teams we play a lot of time. So we’re always playing from behind. So we’re used to being in that position.”

The Mustangs defeated the Capitals 7-6 on Friday and beat Fort Nelson 3-0 in the semifinal with goals from Crosby, SheardownWaugh and forward Keegan Bevilacqua.

“Our kids are younger than those guys, so of them by probably three years, it was our sixth game this weekend and that’s a lot of hockey on them,” said Gale. “You could tell they were tired, but they did well.

I’m really proud of them, they did a lot of good things, and there’s some stuff we’re continuing to work on.”

His others came in the 50-metre backstroke (30.96), the 100-metre freestyle (58.75), the 50-metre breaststroke (33.56) and the 100-metre breaststroke (1:15.18).

His AAA times were set in the 50 free, 50 back, 50 breast and 100 breast.

Robinson, who was swimming the boys 14-15 division in

Kelowna, made the podium with second in the 50 breast and third in the 50 free. (He missed the 100 breast and 100 free finals to catch a flight home.)

“My endurance isn’t where it was before my injury, but it’s slowly getting there,” said Robinson.

Robinson was one of eight members of the Whitehorse Glacier Bears at the meet that saw about 275 swimmers from throughout B.C. compete.

Teammate Hannah Kingscote also set club records and made the podium. The 12-year-old set records in the 50 back (32.80) and 100 back (1:11.60) for girls 11-12.

“Aidan did really well: he swam the 1,500-metre freestyle and qualified for his AA,” said Glacier Bears head coach Malwina Bukszowana. “He does really well at the long distances recently.”

Whitehorse’s Emma Boyd made B finals in the 50 and 200 free for girls 12-13.

Teammate Taylor Harvey, who is dealing with a shoulder injury, took 12th in the 100 back and 15th in the 100 free, shaving 29 seconds off her time, in girls 14-15.

“She is doing really well for just kicking,” said Bukszowana.

“It went really well. I think the kids swam a little faster than I expected at this time, especially since they had a time trial last week and they were a little bit tired,” she added. “They always swim so well at the Outside meets that it’s kind of easy to motivate them.”

Huskies set for tougher challenge against Regals this weekend Tom Patrick News Reporter

T

he Whitehorse Huskies senior men’s hockey team thumped the Fort Nelson Yeti in a pair of home games earlier this month.

But don’t expect blowouts as the Huskies host the Powell River Regals this weekend, says Regals player and manager Andy Welsh.

“We have two goalies and 13 skaters, so we’re not exactly full, but the players we do have a pretty high quality, so we should be playing a pretty skilled game,” he said.

“I saw the scores from when Fort Nelson was up there and I don’t think the scores will be that high when we’re playing.

“We play more of a defensive style and with our goaltending and the D-men we’re bringing up, the goal scoring will be down a little bit.”

Both teams have gone AA this season. The Regals played AAA just last season and the Huskies played AAA in their previous season five years ago. The cost of AAA, which all but demands the use of outside players, is just too expensive for both clubs.

“We’ve been bouncing around,” said Welsh. “We were doing AAA and it just got too expensive. And with Fort St. John no longer having a (AAA) team, there’s not really anybody to play. So we made the move to go back to AA and get more local players involved and it’s more fun that way.”

against B.C. AA teams to qualify for the Coy Cup – B.C.‘s AA senior men’s trophy.

The Huskies will head to Fort St. John for a series against the city’s Flyers in March. The winning team will go on to play for the 2015 Coy Cup, which will be hosted by the Fort Nelson Yeti at the end of March.

“We’re expecting this (weekend) to be our biggest challenge getting ready for Fort St. John,” said Huskies assistant captain Clayton Thomas. “So we’re expecting a tighter game on both

ends. These guys have a history in their hockey club – they can put teams together. They put AAA or AA teams together every year.

“Those guys have played a lot of AAA hockey.”

“I think they are going to be a little bit younger and a lot faster than the last team,” said Huskies head coach Michael Tuton. “It’s tough to prepare for these games. We have no idea what they’re like, but from what I hear they are going to be a much better test for the Husk-

ies.”

A total of 1,600 fans attended the two games against the Fort Nelson Yeti – the Huskies’ first home games in five years – earlier this month at Whitehorse’s Takhini Arena.

The Huskies downed the Yeti 9-5 and 14-7 in the games, giving the team a 4-0 record on the season. The Huskies had already beat the Yeti in Fort Nelson in a of pair tighter one-goal games in December.

In the Huskies’ previous season five years ago, the Regals

– who were also a AAA team at the time – swept Whitehorse in a five-game series to get to the Allan Cup, Canada’s AAA senior men championship.

The Regals won the Savage Cup – B.C.’s AAA championship – in 2012 and the Allan Cup in 2006.

They also won the Coy Cup in 2010 with goalie Lazlo Tamasik, who will be starting in net for the Regals this weekend.

At the other end of the ice, Whitehorse’s J.J. Gainsforth will be getting his first at-home start on Friday. Gainsforth picked up a win in Fort Nelson in December.

Both nights are doublebilled. Before the main show the Whitehorse Bantam Mustangs rep team will face the visiting Eagle River, Alaska’s Blue Devils.

It will be Whitehorse fans’ last chance to see the Bantam Mustangs face out-of-town competition before they go to the B.C. Hockey Championships in March. The Mustangs-Blue Devils games start at 5:30 p.m.

“We’ve partnered up with (Whitehorse) Minor Hockey and it’s working out great,” said Thomas. “It doesn’t happen all the time that you partner up with someone and everybody wins.”

The Huskies-Regals games will start at 7:45 p.m. both Friday and Saturday at Takhini Arena. Tickets are $10 at the door (cash only). Minor hockey players under 12 and wearing their team jersey, get in for free.

There will be a beer garden in the mezzanine.

hitehorse junior Mustafa Syed starts slow but finishes strong.

At least that was the case at the Darkest Night Squash Tournament on Saturday at Better Bodies Whitehorse.

The 17-year-old kept fighting back from trailing situations in the open A division final to win his third tournament of the season. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Every tournament I go to that

happens,â&#x20AC;? said Syed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;(Squash Yukon head coach) Khoon (Chua) is like, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;You have to start strong in the beginning.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

Syed won the open division with a 15-13, 14-16, 16-14, 16-14 win over Grayson Peters in the final.

Syed dropped the first five points of the match and was down 9-4 before winning the first game.

He was also down 11-2 in the fourth set and then 14-9 before winning seven straight points for the match.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;As far as I could tell, we were both playing pretty well â&#x20AC;&#x201C; I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t blame it on anything,â&#x20AC;? said Peters. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My body wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t able to keep up, I guess. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t play enough to be in the best of shape.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the beginning he was really fast, but by the end he was slowing down,â&#x20AC;? said Syed, of his 29-year-old opponent. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I just kept it in (play).â&#x20AC;?

Syed captained the winning team at the Reservoir Dogs Squash Tournament in November and won the Early Bird Squash Tournament in October. He also produced

two wins and two losses at the 2014 Canadian Junior Squash Championships last April.

He is one of seven Yukon players who will compete at the Canada Winter Games next month in Prince George, B.C. It will be Syedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second Canada Games, having played for Yukon at the 2011 Games in Halifax.

Water collected in the MCP will be used in processing ore and any excess water will be treated in the mine water treatment plant prior to discharge to the environment. Effluent discharge rates will vary over the course of the year and range from 2 L/s (183 m3/d) to peak values of roughly 30 L/s (2600 m3/d). The water treatment plant will remove cyanide and metal contaminants through cyanide destruction using SO2 â&#x20AC;&#x201C;air and high density sludge (HDS, respectively. The expected water quality in the discharge from the mine water treatment plant for the parameters of environmental interest is summarized in Table 2.
