Last week all the neighbours were anticipating a blow-up.

Many were watching when the 78 year old “new guy” in the neighbourhood walked over to meet the messy, unemployed son across the street and two doors down.

The drama played out as Charles Fuller approached Greg who was lying under an old Chevy pick-up, propped up precariously on four rusty rims.

“Need a hand holding that starter in place”? asked Charles, quietly, as he knelt beside the left front wheel.

Within minutes they were swapping stories about legendary Chevy trucks from the sixties.

That weekend, Greg’s cluttered driveway got cleared off and his most important “project truck” found a home in one side of Charles Fuller’s double garage.

Greg quickly understood that his new friend and mentor didn’t “work in a mess”.

Within weeks Greg and Charles drive away in a running 72 Chevy pick-up that they put together as a team.

Greg’s frazzled parents can’t believe that anyone would have all that time for their unemployed son.

Emily, the single Mom with three kids living in the basement suite directly across from the Fullers has tried to have a conversation with her new “grandmotherly” neighbour.
