This is the best job I’ve ever had and the future looks bright.

How many of us can say that about our current jobs?

One person who can with genuine enthusiasm is Bruce Davies.

As executive director of the Central Okanagan Foundation for the past two and half years, Davies says these are exciting times for the foundation.

The endowment fund has experienced tremendous financial growth thanks to wise investment decisions over the past three years.

As a result, for the first time in its history the foundation is looking at multi-year grants being available to applicants this spring and is in a position to give out three times more grant money compared to previous years.

“There is a great deal of satisfaction for me personally about how the foundation is able to make a difference to many in our community,” Davies said.

A Central Okanagan Foundation project grant enabled recipient Bumbershoot Children’s Theatre to develop and produce Pirates in the Park. In partnership with Festivals Kelowna, Bumbershoot animated public spaces by adapting the show to different play structures in Kelowna parks. With the help and support of the COF, Bumbershoot was able to write an original script (by Tracy Ross) and musical score (Neville Bowman) for Pirates in the Park, and stage three performances to more than 1,500 people in parks throughout the city. and our community, and we have a great team of staff and volunteer supporters behind us.”

The endowment fund has grown and now has assets valued at more than $27 million.

The COF is one of 51 community foundations in B.C., the largest representation of any province in the Canadawide total of 191.

Davies said the history behind community foundations is relatively new, with the first such foundation in North America created in Cleveland a century ago, and the first one in Canada started in Winnipeg in the 1920s.

“I think part of the success behind the number of community foundations in B.C. was the success of the Vancouver Foundation, the largest endowment fund in Canada,” Davies said.

“I think that success carried over

to other communities, and the Vancouver Foundation has also helped to promote the establishment of similar foundations around the province, so that has been very helpful.”

The story behind the COF began with a group of initial investors with a common belief— caring about the needs of residents of their community, in perpetuity.

In the early 1970s, the Social Planning Council of Kelowna recognized that there was a shortage of funding to help address

the needs that their inquiries exposed.

A three-person committee was formed comprised of Ish Holmes, Frank Williams and the originator of the idea for a foundation here, Lionel Wace.

The three-man committee first approached Jake Peters, their friend and local council member, and a person known to support worthy causes.

When the idea was shared with Peters, the three were astounded to have him so readily agree to contribute the first $5,000 with Naramata Centre as the beneficiary.

The committee concluded that a “pool” of funds was essential with the use of as much of the income as possible left to the discretion of the directors of the new

Long-time Kelowna residents likely remember the Halls’ store at the base of Lakeshore hill, and many will recall Dick and Jean’s love of their neighbourhood and appreciation for various not-for-profit groups which contribute to our community’s diversity and health.

When Dick met Jean, a nurse at Kelowna General Hospital, he was instantly smitten. They were married in 1953 and shared a lifetime of wonderful memories.

While they traveled extensively around the world together, they were always happy to return home to their favorite community, Kelowna.

After 48 happy years together, Dick passed away in 2001 from cancer. Jean continued to enjoy life for many years surrounded by Dick’s garden and friends from their lifetime together. She passed away in September 2009.

Although gone now, their generous support of local arts, education, health and faith, along with their love of animals continues through income generated by their memorial fund and contribution to Central Okanagan Foundation’s Community Fund.

She has seen both sides of the Central Okanagan Foundation, as the executive director of the Central Okanagan Child Development Association; she has seen funds from the COF go to financing COCDA programs; and as a private donor she has the personal satisfaction of knowing she’s giving back to improve the community she loves.

In her work and in her volunteer roles in the community, Wendy says her motivation is helping children have a better life. “Children touch my heart.”

One way she and her husband chose to give back to the community is by donating to the Central Okanagan Foundation, creating a family fund.

“The money we donate stays in principle, and the interest goes to helping others in the community,” she says. “It can keep giving and giving for years to come.

That’s why my husband and I invest with the COF.” “The COF is the perfect place to donate,” says Wendy. “It helps those in our community. It helps us all grow.”

Theresa practices law in the area of estate planning. When she meets with clients to discuss their philanthropic goals, she says she often suggests they look at donating to the Central Okanagan Foundation.

“The benefits of donating to the COF is that this money is for community causes, decided upon by community members…I enjoy the work that I do, and my family has really enjoyed living here,” says Theresa.

“I think it’s really important that people help make the community the kind of place they want it to be.”

Call it the Hamilton connection. If all goes well, a new charter flight from Hamilton to Kelowna could bring an ongoing stream of tourists to the Okanagan Valley.

Big White Ski Resort has joined forces with four other ski resorts in B.C., as well as a Canadian travel company called NewLeaf, in an attempt to bring more ski tourists to the Okanagan in a partnership the resort says could benefit the entire region’s tourism operators.

Big White, Silver Star, Apex, Sun Peaks and Revelstoke Mountain Resort are offering week-long spring break

packages on a 150-seat charter out of Hamilton, Ont., which at this point is a one-time charter flight with a chance to grow into more.

“The biggest problem we are having is the price of air during holiday periods has skyrocketed so high on the scheduled carriers that our packaging became unaffordable,” said Michael Ballingall, Big White’s senior vicepresident, noting it has become cheaper to fly from Toronto to Salt Lake City, Calgary or Whistler than to Kelowna.

“So if we wanted to grow our business we needed to find a way to get people here at a reasonable cost.”

“Once this clears the way and we show the airplane is easy to book, it opens up a whole new market for us.

“There are a lot of people that can easily access Hamilton that would think twice about driving all the way to Toronto. It’s an untapped market.”

The resorts partnered with NewLeaf to provide the travel packages and Kelowna-based Flair Airlines, an air charter service with five Boeing 737 jets in its fleet.

Ballingall, who is also the chair of the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association, hopes to offer more ski trip charters around the holidays as well as expand the program to include other sectors of the tourism industry.

“Skiing will test this out but if it works for skiing why wouldn’t it work for wine or golf or mountain biking?” he said.

“This is about getting better air service into the Okanagan Valley.”

Kelowna councillor hospitalized to battle bout of pneumonia Kelowna city councillor Charlie Hodge is being treated for pneumonia at Kelowna General Hospital.

Hodge’s wife Teresa Hodge posted on his Facebook page that he was admitted to the

hospital Wednesday afternoon.

He is being treated with antibiotics and pain killers for pneumonia in his left lung. His condition is complicated by the fact he also suffers from emphysema.

“He is in awesome hands with his lung specialist and he won’t let Charlie come home until he deems Charlie fit enough to do so,” said Teresa in her Facebook posting.

“Charlie is bored,” she said. “He is in room 8 on the main floor of emergency. They haven’t found a room for him

yet. He said he wants company because there is nothing to do there.

So Charlie to want to be social.”

Hodge was elected to Kelowna city council in the last municipal election, after having

served one term previously from 2008 to 2011. Hodge, born and raised in Kelowna, is also a columnist for the Capital News, an author and long-time journalist in the B.C. newspaper industry.

Aquilini Group’s bid for SOPA Square project has been approved The Aquilini Group’s offer to buy the stalled SOPA Square development in Kelowna’s South Pandosy area has been accepted.

There was a six-week wait to see if any other interested parties would match the $29.5 million Aquilini offered for the partially built mixed-use commercial-residential development on Pandosy Street, which is in receivership.

Then the receiver handling disposal of the property issued a certificate allowing the Vancouver-based company to proceed with its purchase and informed the courts of the move.

The sale is expected to close by midFebruary.

The troubled development has been

beset with problems since it was first approved by the city in 2008. The original developer ran out of money trying to build the ambitious project, and then a second developer only managed to complete the two-storey commercial space fronting Pandosy.

An 11-storey residential tower was put on hold and has yet to be built, as was a six-storey townhouse addition.

The Aquilini Group, owners of the Vancouver Canucks hockey team, also has another development planned for Kelowna, the residential highrise tower dubbed 24, slated for Bernard Avenue.

That project was halted when the recession hit and has yet to be built.

Parkinson Rec Centre pool re-opened The Parkinson Recreation Centre main pool has now re-opened.

A filtration system equipment malfunction

caused the pool to be closed earlier this week.

“While the water clarity did not pose any health concerns, the closure was

necessary to maintain a safe facility,” said Jim Gabriel, city divisional director for active living and culture.

The Canadian Culinary Championships return to Kelowna Feb. 6 and 7 when a new top chef for the nation will be chosen.

Chefs across the country have competed locally to take part in this sold-out Gold Medal Plate competition.

They will have locally sourced food and some of the finest products to work with.

Combined with the Okanagan’s and Canada’s renowned wines, spirits and beers, a culinary extravaganza is sure to ensue.

Kristian Eligh, representing B.C. from Hawksworth Restaurant in Vancouver, is young and enthusiastic.

Having taken his initial training on Vancouver Island, he developed his skills and style at Market

by Jean-Georges, ShangriLa Hotel, and Diva in Vancouver as well as spent time in some of North America’s leading restaurants in Chicago, New York and Charleston, South Carolina.

All of these experiences influenced Eligh toward light and compelling flavour profiles.

Although he doesn’t know each farm and market intimately, he knows local chefs and has made the most of that camaraderie.

The second part is a “quick fire” Black Box Competition of ingredients.

“There’s a certain amount of food that has to be prepared in a very precise time,” he said.

Finally, there is the Grand Finale on Saturday night, Feb. 7, at the Delta Grand Hotel. “This is your signature dish for 650 people paired with a

beverage,” Eligh said. “I will stay true to what we do at (Hawksworth).”

Used to the stress of the kitchen, being in competition won’t stop the chefs from having a great time together. “I know four others (in the competition),” he said.

They are the new guard—the rising stars on the culinary scene.

Founded in 2003, the goal of Gold Medal Plates is to raise substantial funds for Canada’s high performance athletes, while celebrating Canadian excellence.

The competition has since generated $8.2 million for Canada’s Olympic athletes.

It is called ‘the plague of the 21st century’ for its dramatic increase in numbers and the challenge it poses to health care. There are no effective treatments, merely a handful of drugs that promise only short-lived alleviation of symptoms.

But as familiar as we are with Alzheimer’s, there are so many questions: where did it come from? Why weren’t we talking about it even 50 years ago? Do we understand what really is going on in the disease?

With Kelowna’s deal to buy Rutland Centennial Park from the Rutland Park Society set to close next week, the focus for the society is shifting to the future of the Rutland Centennial Hall.

The hall, which the society kept as part of its $800,000 deal with the city, will see the money paid for the park spent on improvements to the hall, including realigning its entrance to face what will become known as Roxby Plaza on its south side.

The hall’s existing nondescript main entrance is currently facing the north side of the park.

But with city plans to create a plaza out of what is now a parking lot— curiously called Roxby Park—society officials felt a new orientation for the hall was in order.

The plaza is to become home to an outdoor community market for Rutland, which will incorporate the existing flea market that currently calls the community hall home, as well as add arts, crafts and food.

She said anyone with a “vested interest” in Rutland—whether they are members of the society or not—is welcome to apply to join the committee.

The city has budgeted the first $400,000 of the cost to improve the park and says it plans to spend a great deal more to bring it up to the standard of other major city parks in future years.

For years, the park has deteriorated under the ownership of the society, which has repeatedly said it does not have the money to adequately maintain the hall and the park.

Given that the park is rarely used and thus does not generate much revenue, the prospect of raising enough money to improve it was slim.

That’s why the society says it made the deal with the city.

D’Andrea, who is also the executive director of the Uptown Rutland Business Association, said the connection between the business community and the park society is a good one because both will benefit from improvements to the park and the hall.

“Rutland really does not have a centre,” she said. “We are hoping this will become that centre.”

She said there are a lot of “naysayers” both in the Rutland area and elsewhere in the city who have little good to say about Rutland.

But D’Andrea said she and her fellow park society directors care about the community and want to create a hub that Rutland can be proud of.

In addition, another colourful initiative in Rutland is also set to kick off in the spring, aimed at improving the image of vacant commercial spaces in the area.

The Art in Empty Spaces programs will feature commissioned art works depicting Rutland history hung in the windows of vacant commercial buildings throughout the community.

Initiated by URBA, the Art in Empty Spaces program will call for the art to be sold with a 20 per cent commission going back to URBA. Half of that will go to a Rutland charity, Pathways, with the rest used for further community improvement.

Dick Stewart, also on council at the time and member of a long established Kelowna family, agreed to establish a family fund and to give leadership and vital assistance in the raising of the “pool” of funds.

Stewart was to become the first president of the COF and served in that position for the foundation’s first nine formative years until 1986, by which time the assets had grown to $537,297.

The original target was to encourage 10 families to contribute $5,000 each over a period of no more than five years.

The personal interviews that led to 16 positive responses were not only

for funds but also were for interest in serving as founding directors.

Davies said those initial contributors behind the formation of the COF showed considerable foresight for how the growth of that initial endowment start-up could benefit community groups for years to come, with that impact widening as the fund grew.

In 2014, the COF handed out grants totaling more than $700,000, and has distributed more than

$7 million in its history.

Today, the COF also administers grant initiatives for the City of Kelowna, this past year overseeing the distrubution of more than $250,000.

Like its counterparts across Canada, the foundation faces the ongoing challenge of maintaining a high profile in its communities, and through that provide a vehicle to make endowment investments that will percolate down to worthy local groups for years to come.

“For us, it’s a kind of thing where those who know about us, like us a lot. But we’re always looking for ways to get the word out in our communities, such as by forming partnerships,” Davies said. “It’s a common issue that we all talk about among community foundations all the time.”

Davies is no stranger to that plight, having worked in the charitable sector for the past 30 years across Canada, including 20 years with the United Way. “The great thing about the Central Okanagan Foundation is we represent the community we work and live in, we are a reflection of that.

And it is the generosity and foresight of those initial donors 37 years ago

Big White Road not much better To the editor: I have the privilege of driving up to Big White over the ski season. I would like to offer up some comments regarding the experiences I have had.

Taxpayers paid for an $11-million “upgrade” to the Big White turn off. They moved the intersection up the highway a bit and had

These people have a right to make a living but sure upset thousands of people every day. Some drivers have the decency to pull over just before the highway, but many do not.

A good portion of Hwy. 33 has been posted at 100 km/h now.

Very few drive it that fast as it has many curves and driveways.

Most drivers will travel the speed that is reasonable. What is not, is having the section between Black Mountain and Springfield posted at 60. It is four lanes, there are only two farm driveways and everyone does 80. The police often set up a “fishing hole” at the curve, bringing much extra revenue. This section needs to be changed to 80.

Finally, a general comment about B.C. drivers. Why do so many of you disable your daytime running lights? About 10 per cent of the vehicles I see do not have them. Since they have been legally required to be installed for 20 years it can only mean they are intentionally disabled. There is no law requiring them to be active but it sure makes sense when you are on a mountain road with blowing snow or fog.

Wolf kill is the last hope for caribou When the B.C. government last resorted to shooting wolves Victoria News from helicopters in the 1980s, an emotional public outcry forced a retreat.

TOM In the B.C. tradition, sensation- FLETCHER seeking urban media and protesters led the way. An outraged reporter named Pamela Martin marched a BCTV crew off the road near Fort St. John to expose this presumed crime against nature. With a metre of snow and temperatures dipping to -40, they didn’t get far, but public sentiment was aroused enough for politicians to overrule wildlife biologists.

This winter, while snow reveals the wolves’ location from the air, the choppers and rifles are out again. And my heart goes out to the biologists and First Nations hunters who face this grim task.

The South Selkirk mountain caribou herd, which ranges between B.C., Idaho and Washington, has been the target of intensive conservation efforts by governments on both sides of the border. Six of the remaining 18 animals now wear radio collars. There were 46 in 2009, only 27 by 2012, and wolves have killed two more since last spring.

Targeted hunting and trapping haven’t been sufficient, so up to 24 grey wolves are to be shot from the air before the snow melts.

There are seven caribou herds in the South Peace, with the Graham herd the largest at about 700. It’s the control group, left to fend for itself as a measure of wolf removal for the rest.

The Burnt Pine herd is down to one bull, effectively extinct. The province and Treaty 8 First Nations are working on a plan to kill 120-160 wolves in that region.

It’s long been accepted that resource roads, logging and recreational trail use have increased herd disruption and predator access through what would otherwise be seamless bush and deep snow.

Snowmobiles and even back-country skiers can shift the balance. Smithers-area outdoor enthusiasts are currently being urged to stay away from the Telkwa Mountains, where the caribou herd is down to fewer than 20 animals. Local hunting and snowmobile clubs have observed a ban on motorized travel since 2003, but of course there will always be yahoos who chase animals for fun.

A mountain caribou recovery plan was implemented in 2007, protecting 2.2 million hectares from logging and road-building, including most of the core habitat of the South Selkirk herd.

Strategies include transplanting animals from healthier to weaker herds to increase genetic diversity, and capturing and penning females with young calves to keep them from being picked off by wolves.

The B.C. grey wolf population averages around 8,500, with managed hunting and trapping to protect livestock while preserving the wolf as apex predator in most of its wide range.

This context is seldom reported by Vancouver media, which mostly sees its role not as explaining issues but rather embarrassing whatever political party is in power, and providing an uncritical platform for the stop-logging-mining-energy crowd, which is seen as popular with urban viewers.

Remember the spotted owl, with the fringe of its range extending into southern B.C.? Our branchplant enviros marketed that one for years. Its core habitat is Washington and Oregon, where many sawmills were shuttered to “save” them.

Now they’re shooting invasive barred owls, which have emerged as a greater threat to spotted owls than logging. Context is important.

I suppose we’ll never know what difference the 1980s wolf kill would have made if it hadn’t been shouted down for TV ratings and urban envirodonations.

Save caribou HUNTERS/GUIDES habitat, don’t Resident hunters not getting fair allocation kill wolves To the editor: I am writing to express my opposition to the planned wolf kill program that the British Columbia government is considering.

Killing more than 180 wolves through aerial hunting, in the absence of protecting adequate caribou habitat, is unjustifiable.

Wolves are social animals which are integral to ecosystem function. They deserve protection and should not be exterminated because the B.C. government has failed to protect enough habitat for caribou.

Further research is needed to say definitively that wolves are the cause of the decreasing caribou population. Virtually no evidence has been provided to show that slaughtering this many innocent animals will have any effect on the caribou population.

Wolves, being highly intelligent pack animals, understand and mourn when a member of the pack dies. They feel emotions just as we do and when something traumatic happens in the pack it increases aggression and predation.

Not only will these killings upset the population of what should be a protected animal, but we have very little confidence that it will actually make a difference. A more plausible theory for the drop in caribou numbers could be attributed to habitat loss, and lack of food source (lichens) because of this.

Furthermore, if wolves are proved to be what is killing the caribou, then what right do we, as people, have to interfere with a very natural process. Natural selection will do what it will do, populations will decline and populations will rise. It’s the way it’s always been. Wolves are an innocent species that have every right to be protected by us just as caribou are.

There are solutions and alternatives to protecting caribou but killing wolves should not be one of them.

Open letter to the Honourable Premier Christy Clark: Re: Decisions regarding B.C. resident hunter allocations.

The facts presented to us with convincing clarity at the 16 Dec., 2014 emergency BC Wildlife Federation meeting at the Kelowna and District Hunting and Fishing Club, and in many subsequent forums, are really unarguable.

No matter how many different ways these facts are scrutinized, churned, parsed or cut, B.C. resident hunters are not being dealt with fairly.

Gael and I would strongly suggest that you, your cabinet colleagues and your staffs might wish to prudently review and re-visit the underlying rationale for this change in wildlife allocation.

Although I’m now, admittedly, focused more on “fish stuff”, i.e.: fish, fishing (angling) and fish habitat and…the long term health of the fisheries resource here in the Okanagan and in the Interior, my son,

Cringe at Fletcher’s opinion To the editor: Do you think the Capital News’s journalistic integrity is buoyed by publishing biased, compromised and ‘paid for’ journalistic opinion from someone whose boss is a privately owned publishing company (Black Press) with obvious corporate and political alignments (Enbridge and BC Liberal Party) aimed at furthering the owner’s personal wealth and political power (David Black)?

Mr. Fletcher’s column “Hippy Science is Easy, and Wrong,” along with most of his mainly offensive opinion pieces, is both erroneous, misleading and ill-researched.

Not to mention incredibly insulting to those that have and are suffering from the toxic downstream effects of pollutants from the tar sands entering the Athabasca River in Alberta.

I find it astounding that you would allow a journalist with little to no journalistic integrity to have such a prominent place on your Opinion page. Shouldn’t this page offer a varied and diverse range of opinion rather than a consistent right wing rant from Mr. Fletcher who is anti anything not provided and pushed by the conservative, corporate and industrial complex that seem to have gained a strangle hold on this country and

much of its media?

His mash up of topics and confusion of the issues related to them is astounding. For example, comparing quality proven detoxs with soup diets, and vitamin supplements with ‘bleeding by leechs’.

Mr. Fletcher has obviously decided that ‘the facts’ for him are supplied and need no support, and that personal choice and civil liberty are unimportant and a holistic, and a natural and conservation-based approach to my own life, or life on this planet, is a waste of time. Particularly if it doesn’t increase economic growth, add to the coffers of politically aligned corporations with the same rights as people, or continue to strengthen the status quo of the ‘industrial development at all costs’ mentality that threatens the health of the environment and the people living in it.

I am sick to death of Mr. Fletcher’s feckless, biased and misleading opinion pieces and wish you would temper his right wing extremism with some open-minded, innovative opinion that may actually make your readers think deeply rather than cringe with disgust.

The Phoenix, largely supported by a media fee charged to UBCO students, had run up a deficit of approximately $16,000 prior to its removal from campus.

A deal the newspaper thought it had with the student union to cover its $8,000 rent for the office space was not signed by the student union, despite the newspaper thinking it had been accepted.

During its exile from the campus, the Phoenix was produced from the living room of a former editor’s apartment in Rutland.

Described as “not being ideal,” the newspaper nonetheless continued to publish.

But as a result of presenting a balanced budget for this year, the Phoenix was allowed to return to its former office space in the UNC building last November.

Barberis said to balance the budget, some cuts had to be made including dropping two of the 14 issues it normally publishes during the school year and reducing the honorariums paid to Phoenix staffers.

“We’re just glad to be back on campus,” she said.

But while the newspaper is back in its former office, the space is now a little more cramped. That’s because it has to share the space with the UBCO radio club, which has launched a campus radio station.

It will get a small share of the media fee, said Barberis.

The Phoenix will receive about $37,000 of the $44,000 the media fee will bring in this year, with the rest going to the radio club.

The radio club’s cut of the fee has enabled it to buy a sound board for the new station.

Meanwhile, the Phoenix is planning to publish 12 editions during the current school year, said its news editor, three of which have been produced since its return to its campus office.

What if the “life event” is your fault? What if it is something you did that, instead of water off a duck’s back, caused another person devastating consequences?

Do you accept full responsibility for the consequences of your actions? Or, do you instead try to avoid responsibility by blaming your victim for being more vulnerable to the impact of your actions?

These questions come up all the time in personal injury cases.

You crash into the back of a car that was just sitting there, waiting for a light to change.

Your victim might be a fit, flexible, young person whose body can withstand and bounce back from a whiplash injury. Alternatively, the crash might be that straw that breaks the back of a particularly susceptible camel.

The law is very clear.

You (your insurance company) take full responsibility for what your negligent driving has caused.

It’s a legal principle that’s known as the “thin skull rule.” Bash someone over the head with a bat, and you (your insurance company) “pay the piper,” even if your victim’s skull happens to be particularly thin and he suffers a more serious injury than someone with a thicker skull. It’s a rule of law that fits with common sense morality.

There is another rule that deals with those who are more susceptible to injury from every day events, where stepping off a curb or shoveling snow would be enough of a “straw” to cause serious consequences.

That situation is referred to as “crumbling skull.” A crumbling skull victim is entitled only to compensation to the extent a crash accelerates an otherwise inevitable outcome.

If an insurance adjuster tries to get away with blaming you for taking longer to recover than it might take others, hand over a copy of this column.

We are all unique, and entitled to fair financial compensation for however a negligent driver’s actions impact on each of us.

There is significant misinformation about the way wildlife is managed in British Columbia (BC). This backgrounder attempts to clear up the incorrect information and provide an explanation of the way wildlife is managed in the province.

The Ministry’s decision on December 10, 2014 was the result of 10 years of exhaustive discussions between the BC Wildlife Federation (BCWF), the Guide Outfitters Association of British Columbia (GOABC), and the provincial government. Including talks with a neutral facilitator to help resolve this longstanding dispute. The Ministry made a balanced decision and neither party was completely satisfied. However, it is an improvement on the previous policy and provides increased certainty for allocated species. Putting this decision into legislation will finally close this matter.

How do other jurisdictions allocate hunting opportunity between residents and non-residents?

Wildlife managers use a variety of tools to manage and allocate the harvest of big game animals. These tools include laws, regulations, licences, tags, and lottery systems. Most jurisdictions allocate hunting opportunity based on the available species tags for residents and non-residents. These are examples of the true splits of allocated hunts in BC: This decision will provide “…nonresident hunters the best deal in North America” FALSE. Some jurisdictions have a lower percentage of tag sales to non-residents than BC, while some have higher. In BC, the average share for the guide outfitting industry is 12% - consistent with neighbouring jurisdictions.

Have hunting opportunities for the resident recreational hunters been reduced?

NO. Most hunts in BC are managed through general open season, tags

purchased over-the-counter. This decision has no effect on these hunts.

For hunts that need to be allocated, there are approximately 17,500 tags issued every year for hunts that need to be allocated. The Government’s decision will result in 618 fewer resident tags or a 3.5% decrease as compared to 2014.

This decision provides a little relief for those small family businesses but does not replace the revenue lost from the new Harvest Allocation Policy.

This decision will result in “…5,000 fewer hunting licence sales for BC residents” FALSE. Most of the species tags are sold over-the-counter so it is highly unlikely that there will be a reduction in the hunting licences sold to BC residents. Last year the top 5 tags were: 1. Mule deer – 81,596 tags (over-the-counter purchase) 2. Whitetail deer – 52,346 tags (over-the-counter purchase) 3. Moose – 39,049 tags (draw & over-the-counter purchase) 4. Elk – 24,748 tags (over-the-counter purchase) 5. Woman killed in accident

A 21-year-old Kelowna woman has died after the vehicle she was driving went over an embankment Wednesday afternoon.

Shortly after 4 p.m., the Kelowna RCMP responded to a report of a crash in the 6900 block of Highway 33 East.

Vehicle tracks were

seen leading from the roadway, down an embankment.

Police discovered a Mitsubishi Lancer about 250 feet down the

embankment and the sole occupant deceased.

The driver has since been identified as a Kelowna woman. Her name is being withheld

pending notification of next of kin.

RCMP Central Okanagan Traffic Services, and Integrated Collision Analyst and

Reconstructionist Services, continue to assist the BC Coroners Service in the investigation.

Without the highprofile John Morris throwing skip rocks, Jim Cotter’s rink was a little less conspicuous during the 2014-15 curling season.

But that doesn’t mean the Vernon/Kelowna foursome is any less motivated or qualified to take a run at its fourth B.C. men’s curling championship in five years.

Cotter, new third Ryan Kuhn, second Tyrel Griffith and lead Rick Sawatsky will be among the favourites in the 16rink field of the 2015 provincials beginning next Tuesday at the Vernon Curling Club.

While the newlyconfigured team started the season slowly, the Cotter rink finished strong, including reaching the playoff round at the Canadian Open in Yorkton.

“It’s always tricky when you start a season with new players, you kind of need to find your niche as a team,” said Griffith, who will be playing at his third provincials. “About halfway through (the Canada Cup in Canmore)

we started to do that, we won a couple of big games and really started to gain momentum.

We just got stronger in Yorkton, so hopefully that will carry over into provincials.”

With Morris at skip last year, the Okanagan team won the B.C. crown, then fell just a step short of a national title, losing to Alberta’s Kevin Koe in the Brier final.

Based on experience, past successes and the home cooking in Vernon, expectations for the Cotter rink will be high.

But with former B.C. champs Brent Pierce, Dean Joanisse and Sean Geall—among others— in the field, Griffiths said nothing will come easy.

“There are a lot of good teams in B.C., and this is probably the deepest field yet. Teams always seem to get up to play us, so we’ll have to be sharp. I’d say any one of six or seven teams could potentially be there at the end of the week.”

Kelowna’s Jeff Richard—the 2010 B.C. champ—will once again play third for the Brent Pierce rink, with Kelowna’s Tyler Orme and Dave Harper taking care of the front end.

Strong start to Rockets’ road trip east The Kelowna Rockets will wrap up a four game road trip this weekend, beginning tonight with the first of back-to-back games starting in Lethbridge against the Hurricanes.

After winning 4-3 in a shootout Tuesday in Red Deer, the Rockets lost to Edmonton 2-1 in a shootout Wednesday night.

The game against Edmonton marked the return of Leon Draisaitl to the city where he

started the season with the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers before being returned to junior.

Draisaitl was met by a throng of media as the Rockets arrived in Edmonton where he was quizzed about the return to junior, his time so far with Kelowna and whether or not it was the best move for his development to spend another year in the WHL. “I think for me personally it was the best move,” he told reporters. “I can work on my skill and work on the little things. Warriors face Cents in key divisional battle

The games don’t get much bigger than this for the West Kelowna Warriors and Merritt Centennials.

With sole possession of third spot on the

line, the BCHL Interior Division rivals square off in a doubleheader this weekend, beginning Friday night in Merritt.

The Warriors and Centennials meet for the rematch Saturday at Royal LePage in a 7 p.m. face off.

The teams are currently tied with 50 points, but Merritt does hold two games in hand. The Salmon Arm Silverbacks are just four points back in fifth spot. Four teams will make the postseason, meaning one of the three teams will be

left out in the cold.

Zach Burlon (LHP, junior, Etobicoke, ON) and Austin Orsted (RHP, sophomore, Calgary) will also be in the starting rotation mix. Burlon is coming off an up and down season that saw him post a 1-3 record and 5.45 ERA while Orsted was 1-1 with a 2.42 ERA. The fourth spot in the rotation looks to be solidified over the course of the preseason.

The Okanagan College Coyotes will be looking for quality starts this season from lefty Zach Burlon.

There are some notable returnees who are up for the job but also some new faces that are making a bid for it. Joel Lamont (RHP, junior, White Rock), Brandon Becking (RHP, sophomore, Coquitlam), Zac Yandeau (RHP, sophomore, Plumas, MB) are three returnees who could fill the last spot in the rotation. New faces that will also make a strong case for the last rotation spot will be Jason Merz (RHP, freshman, North Vancouver), Will Russell, (RHP, freshman,

Kelowna), and Bo Meikljohn,(LHP, freshman, Edmonton).

Russell is a year out of playing for the local Okanagan Athletics, (BCPBL) where he pitched a team-leading 58 innings in 2013. “Russell had a strong fall and has the ability to throw on short rest, so we will see how the early spring plays out in a variety of roles,” White said.

Despite less than ideal conditions, Jenkins raced to her way to gold medals on both Saturday and Sunday in the girls U14 division. Big White teammate Amy Jorgenson took the silver medal in both events.

It was also a solid weekend for Jenelle Giebelhaus as the Big Whiter Racer grabbed gold in Saturday’s U12 girls race, then added a silver on Sunday. Kiera Swift won a bronze on Sunday.

In U16 girls, Brooke Lukinuk won bronze on Saturday.

Over on the boys side, Zander Torres won silver at Saturday in the U14 category, while Luke McMillan earned bronze medals on both days.

It was a challenging weekend for skiers and organizers alike, as Saturday’s rain gave way to clear skies and warm temperatures on Sunday.

A hard track Sunday morning made for some stellar photo finishes in the early heats, but the softening snow was too much for the track and the older racers. The eight final heats that would determine the winners for U16/18 men’s and the U16 ladies were in

jeopardy.

Race organizers struggled with the decision, but racer safety prevailed and the race was cancelled.

There were over 100 volunteer shifts during the two-day event, and everyone gave all they had to preserve the race, but Mother Nature won out in the end.

Regarded as one of the top ski cross tracks in Western Canada, Big White Resort staff also contributed to the preparation and execution of the race located in Telus Park. Next stop in the series is Fernie on Feb. 7 and 8.

Okanagan athletes compete in first trials Members of the Okanagan Gymnastics Centre got an indication of where they stand against the province’s top athletes as they competed at their first trials in Langley.

It was the first of four competitions for the national streamed athletes trying to qualify for Canadian championships.

Samantha Smith won the Women’s Senior division after returning from the World Championships last November.

Curtis Gerein, who is preparing for the upcoming Canada Winter Games, won the Men’s Senior division.

Two Chiefs to Oklahoma Kelowna Chiefs forward Ethan Rusnack will join assistant coach Matt Sheeran at the University of Central Oklahoma next season.

Rusnack finalized his commitment last week and will play U.S. collegiate hockey with the Bronchos, based in Edmond, Okla., for the four years.

“I’m extremely excited to have the opportunity to play hockey for four more years and receive a university degree while I’m doing it,” says Rusnack.

“Rusty is a natural leader amongst his teammates and peers,” said head coach Jason Tansem. “His goal scoring and hockey ability speaks for itself. He will be a huge asset to his new team to say the least.”

Four new club records and a handful of new meet qualifiers were among the highlights for the home team as the Kelowna AquaJets played host to the 38th annual Snowfest swim meet.

Close to 275 swimmers from across B.C. and as far away as Whitehorse and Seattle competed last weekend at H20 Fitness & Adventure Centre.

MADSEN, BENT NIELSEN Passed from this life to the next on Tuesday January 27th, just short of his 86th birthday, at Kelowna General Hospital. Bent leaves seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Hedges and brother, Pastor Holger Madsen. Bent was born February 17, 1929 in Invermere, B.C., and lived in B.C. all his life. He met and married his wife, Jean (nee Pearson) on April 28, 1951.

They moved to West Kelowna, B.C. from the Lower Mainland in 1974. Bent was known for his skill as a mechanic, an inventor and a fixer of all things. He loved his Lord, his family and his church family. Bent lived his life and conducted his business in a manner which reflected his love for God. He shared his faith with all who would listen. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered. A service celebrating Bent’s life will be held on Monday February 2nd at 1:30 pm at Grace Lutheran Church, 1162 Hudson Road, West Kelowna, BC (250) 769-5685. Indulging for a good cause Winter Indulgence is a way to celebrate Valentine’s Day and support a fundraiser for the Elizabeth Fry Society.

The event promises to be an evening of all you desire in fine desserts and wines, featuring the culinary talents of Okanagan College culinary arts program pastry chef Danny Capadouca and chef Bernard Casavant.

The dessert menu will include strawberry champagne French macaroons, red velvet cupcakes with orange buttercream icing, blueberry lemon tartlets and Okanagan apple cinnamon cheescake parfaits.

And all of that is being done to support an agency, the Elizabeth Fry Society, which last year served 2,770 clients and had 13,519 general inquiries.

An opening reception to celebrate this exhibition will be held tonight, 7 to 9 p.m., at the Kelowna Art Gallery.

This will be a free event, open to members and guests by invitation.

New Costner offering delves into some sensitive topics It was another great weekend for American Movie Guy Sniper.

In an era where movies drop 50-per-cent or more on their second RICK DAVIS weekend, it dropped just 28 per cent, earning another $64 million for a total of over $200 million.

If it stays on the same track, it has a chance of beating The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 as the top movie of 2014.

And although it is not grossing nearly as much, Paddington dropped only 35 per cent on its second weekend with great word-of-mouth, meaning that it will have a longer first-run shelf life in theatres.

Awards season continued last Sunday with the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, which is usually a good indicator of what might happen at the Academy Awards.

At this point, it looks like the following are locks for Oscars: J.K. Simmons, best supporting actor for Whiplash; Patricia Arquette, best supporting actress for Boyhood and Julianne Moore for Still Alice.

Even though Eddie Redmayne was the surprise winner for best actor at the SAG awards, the favourite still seems to be Michael Keaton for Birdman.

However, Birdman did win best ensemble at the SAGs (which may be an indicator for best picture at the Oscars), so it may take some attention away from Boyhood, which won best drama at the Golden Globes.

In Project Almanac, a group of friends discover plans to build a time machine and then build one themselves.

They use the time machine initially to undo past mistakes, and eventually their goals turn towards their own gain and pleasure but soon realize that changing the past has dire consequences in the future.

The topic of time travel has already been seen in a lot of sci-fi but producer Michael Bay and the young cast might attract a young audience.

Kevin Costner serves as both producer and star of Black Or White, as a grandfather suddenly left to care for his beloved granddaughter.

When her paternal grandmother (Octavia Spencer, The Help) seeks custody the little girl is torn between two families who love her deeply.

With the best intentions at heart, both families fight for what they feel is right and are soon forced to confront their true feelings about race, forgiveness and understanding.

If a friend told you that the works by Edward Burtynsky and Emily Carr in the current exhibition at the Kelowna Art Gallery were “eye candy,” would you think that was something of an insult?

Or is it actually possible for paintings and photographs to be visually stunning and delicious and still have a compelling intellectual component?

These are questions you can ponder when you come to see A Terrible Beauty: Edward Burtynsky in Dialogue with Emily Carr.

This show has been organized and circulated to us from the Vancouver Art Gallery as part of their Across the Province touring exhibition program, sponsored by the Killy Foundation.

It’s comprised of 18 colour photographs by internationally known, Ontario-based artist Edward Burtynsky, and nine paintings by B.C.’s own Emily Carr.

What unites these two artists, who are separated by a generation, is their shared concern about humanity’s devastating impact on the natural environment.

Burtynsky actually made his first professional works in northern B.C., photographing cuts made in the forest for railway lines. He then moved onto a series of images of giant quarries, which met with immediate critical success when they were first exhibited in the 1990s.

From there, Burtynsky began to travel the world and has photographed such wide ranging places and activities as ocean tanker demolition in Bangladesh and the devastation from the construction of the Three Gorges Dam in China. His works are both riveting and gorgeous.

Emily Carr was a unique and unusual person who struggled against her society’s views on both women and art.

Rather than being a polite, submissive Victorian woman who devoted herself to family and dabbled in genteel watercolour painting, Carr was a serious, committed and passionate artist.

She continued to study abroad and to

15,000-bell quest takes artist around the globe Ellen Creager contributor

Julie Dawson hears life in all its clanging, chiming, gonging, bonging charm.

That’s because she has spent decades tracking and finding bells all over the world.

She has 15,000 photographs of bells and nearly as many stories.

She has written one book about world bells that has 500 pictures in it and has enough pictures to make another book just about bells in the U.S. “Every culture and country throughout the world, through history, has used bells in the most extraordinary ways,” says Dawson, a Birmingham, Mich., watercolour artist and avid traveler who just visited her 100th country,

Turkmenistan, in October.

Dawson has found strange and quirky bells in all corners of dozens of countries: at a hospital in Norway, a farm in Cambodia, even at the New York Stock Exchange. She has photographed cowbells, telephone bells, church bells, school bells, bells that hang around the necks of elephants and camels, bells on the lively legs of traditional British Morris dancers, bells made of splendid brass or carved crudely of wood, bells that have rung in wars or greeted emperors, and bells rung by trained swans pulling on a string to get treats.

Once she visited a barn in Lithuania where an artist had collected bells that had been stolen across the countryside

Bells are used differently in the U.S. than in the rest of the world, she says.

“Throughout the world, bells are more

utilitarian, to make life function,” says Dawson, 77. “In the U.S., because we are inventive and because we are affluent, we can use bells in creative, silly ways as well as serious ways.”

For all that, bells are

not the reason Dawson travels and not the reason she started or keeps going with her work and art.

She gives credit for the trajectory of her life to two influences: the Girl Scouts and her late

husband, Peter.

Born in Highland Park, Ill., Dawson made her first trip abroad at age 17 when she went to Switzerland with the Girl Scouts. There she met nearly two dozen girls from seven

After college at DePauw University in Indiana and another Girl Scout forum in Mexico, at 22, she traveled alone for four months to Europe, visiting other girls she’d met at the scout conferences.

Eventually, she moved to Detroit as a Girl Scout administrator. To try to meet new people, she signed up for watercolour painting classes at the Birmingham-Bloomfield Art Center, and found she had a talent for it.

She married Peter Dawson in 1966, a race car driver and engineer at Chrysler, and later Ford. He shared her travel bug. They’d save up his vacation days so they could be gone for a month at a time in December. Without children, they just went.

When he retired, “we could extend it to seven weeks at a time” or as long as they felt like it.

But they traveled differently than most people did. They rarely made reservations and did not go with a group.

They once showed up in India with hotel reservations for only two nights, got kicked out because Nelson Mandela was coming to visit— and ended up spending a month in India visiting not only classic sights but “the most backwater places, and it was just wonderful.”

By now a professional artist, Dawson shot photographs on her trips that could be used for later painting inspiration,

She also takes commissions from families, companies and organizations for kaleidoscope watercolours—huge, round paintings filled with tiny, puzzle-like images from the person’s own life or company’s mission. In her family room hangs one painting about three feet in diameter.

The kaleidoscope is special—it’s about her husband Peter’s life—and it is filled with tiny race cars and images of their travels.

He died nearly five years ago. But in his final months, during a short battle with cancer amid its long waits and treatments, the couple took out every travel journal they had ever kept and reread every word.

They walked through their trips together again.

“We had been to 97

countries together, and in those four months we relived most of our trips,” she says. “It was a lovely way to wrap up our lives together. We had forgotten—did a toad really jump out of the toilet in Namibia? Things like that. It was fun.

We were perfect travel companions.”

After his death, however, “I decided that my new job was to make the rest of my life good, not just good, but wonderful. That is not to say I don’t miss him. And it’s not to say I wouldn’t give everything up if I could have him back, but I can’t. So I’m plowing ahead.”

The trip she just came back from, taking the Golden Express train on the Silk Road in Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, took two weeks. She is planning to go to Iceland soon.

The only place she has

had trouble finding a bell was Antarctica.

There was only one. It was on their cruise ship.

She took a picture of it while the ship cruised along a bitterly cold mountainous shoreline.

“But it had a nobility to it,” Dawson said.

Her friend Susan Berry says Dawson is not a classic bell collector— in fact, most bells were given to Dawson by others. “For Julie, I think what it is is the spirit of the bells,” she says. That and the quirky aspect.

“She is always interesting. She’s always positive. She’s been through a lot. She just stays strong and maintains and travels.”

A line Dawson writes in one of her children’s books—”Each has a merry bell to keep each full heart light”— reflects Dawson’s own belief: that each of us has an obligation to ring out clear and steady throughout life as best we can.

Then one day in Detroit, she met Susan Berry, an authority on hand bell ringing who owned a shop in Dearborn, Mich.

Dawson started shooting photographs of bells on her trips to make note cards Berry could sell in her shop.

Soon, the bell quest took on a clanging life of its own. But meanwhile, the artist had about 12 other things making noise at the same time.

If you look around Dawson’s Birmingham home and talk to her long enough, her accomplishments make lazier folks feel exhausted.

The house is cheerful and serene, with her art on the walls and broad windows looking out on calm winter woods and a river below.

But Dawson herself never stops. She has had 87 one-woman art shows. She still works 60 hours a week in her home studio. In addition to the bells book, she creates and sells intricate paper cutouts. She writes poetry and has created four children’s books.

She just did a holiday table design for charity that featured nearly 200 tiny handmade penguin cutouts that she designed and made herself. She takes commissions to paint portraits of people’s pets (although not their children, because “lots of parents think their

An entrepreneur has two factors to face when launching an entrepreneurial venture— internal and external.

The external involves the environment, the marketplace and other relevant components outside of the entrepreneur and their business.

The external factors represent the greatest risk to your venture and cause you to adapt to circumstances beyond your control.

Think of it further as the proverbial— opportunities and threats—opportunities which can cause your venture to prosper if you respond to them correctly and promptly; and threats which could cause your downfall if you do not learn how to adapt.

As for the internal factors of an entrepreneurial venture, this is what I think creates

Get Out From Under the Expert Tips for Getting Out of Debt Fast People are always asking: are there options before I have to file a Consumer Proposal or a bankruptcy?

The answer is YES, but like anything, it takes commitment and diligence for them to work. So what are the options?

The easiest and most effective one is to work on a monthly budget and stick to it. Look at where you can reduce some of your expenses without giving up everything. For example, take a look at your budget and examine your entertainment, dining and / or clothing expenses and see what can be cut back. Use any extra money at the end of the month to pay down your debt.

Another option is to call your credit card companies and ask for the lowest interest card possible. You may lose your points or rewards, but the money saved on the lower interest payments will be worth it.

Do you have any assets, like a house, extra cars, savings, investments, RRSPs, etc.? If you do, depending on your level of debt, you may want to use your assets as collateral to get a loan at a much lower interest rate and then pay off your other debt. You could also choose to sell the assets outright and use the funds to pay off your debt. If the funds received from the sale of assets are not enough to pay your debts in full, this may not be the best option for you. The key here is to speak to a professional so you are coming up with a long-term solution, not just a temporary quick fix.

Another option is to go to your bank and ask for a consolidation loan. Basically this involves you asking the bank to give you an amount of money large enough to pay off all your debt, leaving you with just one payment to the bank at a lower interest rate. For this to happen, you need to be qualified by the bank. If you do, the bank may lend you an amount of money to pay off your other higher debts. The only issue is that for this type of loan, the bank usually only lends money for debts that you have at their bank.

As you can see, you do have options before bankruptcy or a Consumer Proposal. They key is dealing with your debt problems early on so they do not become overwhelming.

An entrepreneur’s personal development touches victory more often than people may think.

An entrepreneur’s personal development will determine how he or she responds to those external factor complications.

There are those who believe if you develop yourself professionally, that being engrossed in your venture will come at the expense of your personal life.

But really, there’s more to just being labeled an

entrepreneur.

Many studies conducted by experts in this field centre on identifying the traits possessed by victorious entrepreneurs.

However, one crucial item that should never be disregarded if one wishes to become a successful entrepreneur is mindset, the touchstone that plays a very important role in the achieving success equation.

Mindset, the literature offers us, is an outcome of attitude and behaviour.

Much has been written in leadership and entrepreneurship gospels highlighting the importance and impact of attitude on life.

For instance, attitude is more important than facts, than the past, than education, money, circumstances, failures, successes. It will make

For me, I am convinced at this stage my life is 10 per cent what happens to me and 90 per cent how I react—and we are in charge of our attitude.

It’s the belief of many that the true character of the entrepreneur is not measured by falling, but by how often one keeps getting up.

The best kind of entrepreneurial character development for anew venture creation is how to take you hit and not let it defeat you.

But despite all of that, you need to stand up and raise your arms to the sky in victory.

The famous golfer Arnold Palmer, I am told, has a framed plaque on his office wall which tells us why he has been victorious both on and of the golf course.

Learn how to prioritize what is important on your journey. Juggling glass balls may find you afraid to drop even one and trying to keep them all in the air can wear you out.

So remember, some of those balls are actually made of rubber and will bounce back if you occasionally drop them.

Avril Paice has been employed with the United Way of the Central and South Okanagan Similkameen as the Director of Community Investment since 2010.

In her role with the United Way, Paice works on behalf of many communities and organizations to mobilize and leverage resources to improve the quality of life for citizens.

Paice believes that every person has the power to create the change they want to see in the world and that when we work together, anything is possible. Paice takes this philosophy into everything that she does.

Paice’s coworkers describe her as intelligent and thoughtful, with the wonderful ability to develop positive and beneficial relationships with a wide range of individuals and sectors in the community in order to tackle some very challenging social issues such as poverty, homelessness and health.

As for what drives her to keep going, Paice said it’s simply a matter of doing what she can.

“I’ve been a social worker for 15 years, so I see the needs and I see the difference it makes when someone gives,” she said. “I know I have something to contribute and that I can help.”

A lifelong dedication to volunteerism is the reason why Alison Moscrop was named an honourable mention in the Above and Beyond category of the Community Leader Awards.

Her mother was a devout volunteer, so donating her time was a intrinsic part of her family’s culture.

But, it was really candy striping in her teens that led her to dedicate countless hours of her life to causes she feels passionate about.

“It instilled the desire to volunteer more,” she said. “Some of the most satisfaction I’ve had in my life is through volunteerism, and the people I’ve met through volunteerism.”

In the years since, Moscrop served on the board of directors for the United Way for six years, including two years as the chairperson and she also chaired the Allocations Committeee for two years.

She’s well known for her many philanthropic initiatives including serving as the administrator for the Colin and Lois Pritchard Foundation and being a co-founder of the Great BIg Run for Aftica to raise funds for partners in the Horn of Africa.

Through the Colin and Lois Pritchard Foundation, Alison has been involved in supporting the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation, UBC Okanagan, United Way Success By 6, the Okanagan Boys and Girls Club, the Kelowna Women’s Shelter and dozens of other causes.

She genuinely cares about each organization, taking time to get to know their staff and volunteers, and finding out what else can be done to assist them.

Above & Beyond

Paul Nesbitt saves lives in his spare time, and for that he’s won the Community Leader Award for going Above and Beyond.

Nesbitt ensures Kelowna streets are safe weekend after weekend, when he gets behind the wheel of his car as the leader of Designated Driver Dads.

Nesbitt came up with the idea for DDD while watching a MADD ad on TV in 2009.

He turned to his wife to note that dads were strangely absent from the conversation about drinking and driving prevention.

It was a gap that needed to be filled, so he decided to get a taxi license from the city, rally together some fellow dads and get his volunteer chauffeur concept incorporated.

Canadian Designated Driver Dads Inc. came to life May 2009, and since then a few dedicated men started driving the club loop to help young people make the right decision about drinking and getting behind the wheel. In fact, they’ve assisted in getting 9,000 people home safely, which has taken a tremendous amount of commitment from both Nesbitt and all the other volunteer dads.

It’s a free service, although donations are welcome. And for that reason alone it’s not surprising that it’s been a hit.

“It’s almost gone viral with the kids talking about it and giving cards out for it; they promote it themselves,” Nesbitt said, noting that the service ensures that both the drinker and their car make it home safely.
