The Whistle Stop Pub takes pride in providing quality food at reasonable prices, offering something different and giving back to the community. Barry Van Dusen, who has owned the pub since 2003, says his philosophy is to ensure his food is reasonably priced so customers can enjoy quality food, affordably. His reasoning is that he may make a little less money per meal, but patrons are more likely to come in more often. “I believe that’s a good idea,” says Van Dusen. “(You’re) selling more ... and people are happy when they get good value for their dollar.” StoneGrill® dining is an example of something the Whistle Stop Pub offers customers that no other Comox Valley dining establishments do, and it’s one of the healthiest methods of cooking. The volcanic stones are heated then brought to the table so customers can cook their meal to their preference. It also does away with excess oil or fat found in other cooking methods but provides plenty of flavour. Van Dusen says StoneGrill® dining has proved very popular at the pub, noting filet mignon and New York steaks, salmon, halibut and pork loin are offered.
Meanwhile, hosting community fundraisers is hugely important to the pub, as is ensuring the money raised stays in the Comox Valley.

“(The money’s) come from the people here and it’s nice that it stays here and does something good for the people here,” explains Van Dusen, noting the annual Whistle Stop Pub golf tournament is a prime example.

Each year pub staff chooses a local charity to raise funds for in the September tournament held at Sunnydale Golf & Country Club. After the tournament, participants head over to the pub for a BBQ dinner and the prizes are handed out. Entry forms are available starting in June each year, but pub staff gathers prizes together for much of the year. For more information, contact pub manager Tammy Holmes at 250-334-4500.

The pub also hosts a meat draw each Saturday afternoon, with proceeds going to Street Smart Kidz, a national organization dedicated to encouraging kids to have a safety-first mindset. Various other fundraisers are held throughout the year.
