Finding bonds through peace in Costa Rica CASTLEGAR – It’s not surprising that former Selkirk College English instructor Myler Wilkinson’s definition of retirement is a little unorthodox. Rather than withdrawing from the working world, the energetic scholar is using his retirement to simply redefine what it means to work.

Later this month, Wilkinson will head to Costa Rica where he will teach a one-week course in transformative justice at the University for Peace.

It’s the first step in a new relationship with the international university that highlights the work being done in the Selkirk College peace studies program.

“I’m very glad to do something for the college as I move into retirement,” says Wilkinson, who wrapped up a 25year teaching career at Selkirk College at the end of last semester. “It feels good and right to keep on and not just say that’s it. I always said that I wanted to stay engaged and vital, it’s nice to still be working with the college and taking the MIR Centre [for Peace] to Costa Rica.”

The University for Peace was established by the United Nations in 1980 with the goal of providing an international institution for higher education for peace “and with the aim of promoting among all human beings the spirit of

understanding, tolerance and peaceful coexistence.” It offers master’s degree and doctoral degree programs which have attracted students from more than 100 countries since it opened its doors.

Wilkinson helped spur the partnership which was formalized with a memorandum of understanding late last year.

Selkirk College math instructor Justin Ryan mentioned to Wilkinson that his brother Ross Ryan works in the Uni-

versity for Peace’s communications department. Wilkinson contacted Ross and subsequently submitted an article for one of the university’s journals. Soon the correspondence turned to Wilkinson heading down to Costa Rica to teach and the partnership grew.

“By having Myler go to the University for Peace, it’s not just a piece of paper,” says Shana Rablah, the department head for Selkirk International. “Until we have people going, many international teaching and learning opportunities don’t seem to be a real possibility.”

Rablah helped put the MOU the spirit of with University for Peace together. The hope for the future is that other Selkirk College instructors can have the opportunity to teach in Costa Rica. Another area of future growth is for Selkirk College to send students to study at the Central American university.

Wilkinson’s peace studies course on transformative justice has been one of the more popular program offerings at Selkirk College. Transformative justice is a general philosophical strategy that goes beyond punishment and strives to see conflict as a more systemic issue. Rather than revenge and creating more trauma, transformative justice looks for those who commit acts to take responsibility and

moves towards harm reduction.

“Transformative justice has become a larger philosophical reality in that you are looking at systemic or structural inequities and injustices in the world,” says Wilkinson, who will have five days to teach his course. “Like, why are such a high percentage of prisoners in the United States black?

Why are prisons growing at such an exponential rate? One of the answers is that they are privatized. There are structural reasons for these things to be happening.”

Wilkinson will be joined on his journey by his wife Linda, a former Selkirk College instructor and Selkirk international department head who retired in 2010 after 25 years. The couple were the main push behind starting the Mir Centre for Peace and over the years have taught elsewhere in the world (Russia, Japan, China and Austria).

Upon his return from Costa Rica, Wilkinson will debrief with Rablah and Selkirk International about his experience.

“The real benefit is to go down there and share some information, but also learn something in the process,” says Wilkinson.

Moms go virtual for healthy babies For the first time in B.C., expectant mothers can participate in virtual visits with their maternity care provider directly from their local family doctor’s office, thanks to new tele-maternity (video conferencing) technology developed as a part of a Shared Care/Kootenay Boundary Division of Family Practice pilot project.

The project is funded in partnership by Doctors of BC and the Ministry of Health.

The lead physician for the program in Grand Forks is Dr. Nathan Dalla Lana. He was asked to take the physician lead by project manager Mona Mattei, who is program coordinator with Kootenay Boundary Division of Family Practice.

been mostly Nelson so far,” he said. “I’ve spearheaded the development of the video-conferencing and then the trialing of it.”

He said the program is focused on pregnant women in the community and how to reduce travel times.

“Especially for young moms who might have other young children—driving two hours there and two hours back to Nelson for a 15 minute appointment—we want to avoid that.”

Dalla Lana said the program is also a great way to have better communication with the doctors here, who do a lot of the pre-natal care, and either the midwife or the delivery doctor in Nelson.

Dalla Lana said the feedback from the moms in the program has been very positive.

“The moms have been quite

happy with it in terms of preventing travel time,” he said. “(It’s been good about) communicating and helping avoid problems through travel over there once they travel over there and go into labour.”

Jamie Colby, a young mom from Grand Forks, was able to use tele-maternity in December to connect with her midwife. Reflecting on her new option for maternity care, Colby said, “It was awesome. The visit was stress free, the connection was good and my doctor and midwife also seemed to really enjoy it.”

Colby, a 24 year-old first time mom, had her baby delivered in Nelson four weeks ago.

Before learning about tele-maternity she was traveling two hours from Grand Forks to Nelson to meet with her midwife about once per month for pre-natal appointments.

“I didn’t know they had the tele-conferencing available,” she said. “I was going to Nelson where they brought it up with me. I phoned my doctor here (Sebastian) and we set it up.”

Colby said the biggest benefit was not having to drive the Paulsen Summit in the winter.

“I think it’s convenient,” she said. “Saving money and saving time was the big factor.

You spend four hours traveling time for a 15 minute appointment. It was just like having a regular doctor’s visit with them.”

Colby said she would get a physical check up from Dr. Sebastian and he would relay any message to the midwife.

“I would then talk about any questions with the midwife,” she said. “I was able to talk about my birth plan. It was like she was in the room. It was really pleasant and easygoing.”

Fear Not — there is help for children and youth with anxiety

BY DR. DAVID SMITH Everyone has times of feeling anxious, scared or fearful. In fact, without our body’s innate ability to sense and respond to pending danger, we would never have survived as humans.

These days, however, anxiety disorders are like a car alarm repeatedly sounding when there is no real threat. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health concern for children in BC, affecting an estimated four per cent of

all children, impacting their dayto-day life, their friendships, their school performance, their physical health and their sense of wellbeing. My colleagues and I in the mental health field are concerned that in this modern, fast-paced, wired world, anxiety disorders in children are greatly increasing. We are seeing more children than ever before who are constrained and made miserable by their fears when they should be feeling safe, secure, confident and happy.

Anxious feelings include a rapid heartbeat, difficulty catching one’s breath, a sense of doom, sweaty palms, an upset stomach or stomach ache, even nausea and vomiting. Focusing on the feelings can cause them to intensify, a vicious cycle. Anxious symptoms become a true anxiety disorder when the anxiety leads to avoidance of the situation that is causing the anxiety and causes significant physical distress and disruption of daily life and functioning. An unresolved anxiety disorder can often lead to depression or substance use problems in future years.

Anxiety, however, exists on a

spectrum. A certain amount of anxiety is normal and beneficial. It keeps our children safe and conscientious; it motivates them to perform well. Children who tend to be anxious are often model students: high achieving, diligent, analytical, sensitive, alert, creative and imaginative. Too little anxiety and a child or teenager may take foolish risks or lack motivation to succeed.

But too much anxiety and children become so paralyzed by fear that they may be unable to leave their parent’s side, leave the house, go to school, make friends or participate in normal life.

The good news is that anxiety can be very successfully managed or treated when required. Regular exercise and reliable routines in children are often all it takes to quell mild cases. Mild and moderate anxiety is very responsive to cognitive behavioural therapy, which is a process of addressing the unhelpful thoughts and actions that underlie anxiety. Thought stopping, talking back to negative thoughts, not believing everything you think, relaxation techniques like calming breathing, mindful-

ness meditation, and gradual safe exposure to the things you fear are all examples of types of therapy.

All children — and adults, too — could benefit from learning simple techniques to turn off their body alarms that are sounding unnecessarily. In more long term or severe cases of anxiety — such as panic disorders, post traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder — treatment may include a period of anti-anxiety medication in addition to teaching the child age-appropriate techniques, an approach called “pills plus skills.”

If you are worried about your child or teenager’s anxiety, there are many places to get help. Many online resources as well as books, some written for specific age groups, are available to give in depth information about anxiety and step-by-step instructions for specific therapy techniques. For parents of children and youth, the Force Society, in partnership with the Ministry of Children and Family Development’s Friends Program, offers an online parent program for parents of children ages four to 13 years. Anxiety BC (anxietybc.ca)

is another great site and offers detailed pages for adults and youth.

West Kootenay/Boundary families seeking treatment for children and youth who suffer from anxiety have access to cognitive behavioural therapy but there may be a waiting list depending on the community.

“Anxiety is the No. 1 reason we’re in business,” says Nelson-based clinician Catherine Williams. “Depression would be next. But anxiety left untreated can also lead to depression.”

Cognitive behavioural therapy can help in a majority of cases, while the rate increases even higher when combined with medication.

Williams is one of three trained clinicians based in Nelson. There are also three in Castlegar, three in Trail, and two in Grand Forks. But Nelson gets the most referrals and has the longest waiting list.

Williams says it’s not easy

to say how many families are served at any given time, because individual cases vary greatly.

“While we would hope to offer ten to 15 sessions, sometimes it doesn’t happen that way. Sometimes we’re involved longer because there’s been a crisis, or we think movement is starting to happen and we’ll hang in a little longer.”

Conversely, in some instances, only three or four sessions are required.

Clinicians do intakes, assessments, develop treatment plans with families, provide the treatment, consult psychiatrists, and make other referrals.

In Nelson, all students at Trafalgar middle school — not just those at high risk — are exposed to BC Friends, an anxiety-prevention and resiliency program that teaches them to question their internal dialogues.

“If their life is too stressful and the modelling in the

home is volatile or negative, they’re much more likely to have high anxiety,” Williams says. “We teach kids that if they’re having those thoughts, they can ask ‘Is that actually true? Is the way I’m thinking about this situation accurate?’ Kids learn problem solving.

“Avoidance is a big characteristic of anxiety. Kids and adults want to avoid things that make them anxious, so this program helps them face their fears and break them down into small, manageable steps. Those are life skills we all should have.”

The majority of referrals come directly as a result of parents approaching mental health workers, but others come from physicians and social workers. Williams welcomes parents to call her, even if they don’t think a referral is necessary.

Much of their work is family-based, and includes education and support for parents.

Meanwhile, Dr. Akinyele Iyiola, a Trail-based psychiatrist, says while families are sometimes reluctant to consider medication, it can help until therapy becomes available.

“Often if a child has depression, anxiety, or anxiety with depressive features and we feel this child would benefit from medication, we discuss it with the parents,” he said. “I would never impose it on you, but it’s my duty to advise you.”

Once therapy begins, Iyiola continues to provide outpatient follow-up and monitor the child’s progress.

He says rates of childhood anxiety in this region appear normal, although he’s hoping to do a two-year review of his patients to get a better handle on how things break down by gender, diagnosis, location and socio-economic factors.

Rossland’s Patrice Gordon is finally home from over two months of training, providing care and staying isolation after fighting the Ebola virus in West Africa. She was excited to get home and spend time with her dogs in the snow.

With files from Liz Bevan There wasn’t much fanfare when Patrice Gordon boarded a plane for Africa last month – but there sure was a national hullabaloo when she returned home.

That’s because for four weeks, the Rossland native had worked the front lines of the deadly Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa.

Upon her return to Canada, the nurse practitioner developed flu-like symptoms, with fever and achy muscles, while she was staying in Kelowna over the holidays.

Gordon’s subsequent admission to the Kelowna General Hospital sparked a media frenzy across the country, forever linking her name to the contagious disease.

“I couldn’t believe it,” she said.

“I was shielded by a lot of it by a media person for the Red Cross.

She was fabulous, and told me I didn’t have to talk to anyone, but I wanted to talk to people.”

The story has since quietened and has a happy ending, because after being tested for Ebola three times over 21 days, all tests were negative and she is back in the comfort of her Chilcotin home.

And even though she is a long way from Sierra Leone, her mind remains with those at the treatment centre.

“I am all the way over here in Canada, but I feel so close to those people and feel their pain,” she told Trail Times reporter Liz Bevan, on Jan. 19.

The message she wants to get to the media is how relatable the victims of Ebola are to Canadians at home.

“I wanted to be able to put some faces on the story instead of talking about a virus on the other side of the planet,” she said.

“I want people to understand that these are happy little chil-

dren being stricken. There is the 22-year-old university student or the 18-year old who is working with his father fixing shoes – they are dying.”

Just before speaking with Bevan, Gordon had received news that the disease had also killed one of the health care providers she had worked with in Kenema district of Sierra Leone.

“He was the first Red Cross person that has been affected since the mission started in April 2014,” she explained. “I am just stunned. It is like one big family there. I am just waiting to hear more and send my deep sadness and love over to them. He committed the last four months of his life to working six days a week looking after his fellow countrymen and now he has died.”

There is still suffering going on in the Ebola-stricken country, but for Gordon, it is time to heal herself after the emotional roller coast of the last few months.

“I know that I haven’t processed it year,” she said. “But, I came home to my partner and two furry, warm puppies that are happy to see me and that has been the greatest therapy a person can have.”

According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, about 22,000 people in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone have been infected with Ebola, leading to more than 8,600 deaths.

Bursaries a boon for Selkirk College students Learning to deal with financial pressure is as much a part of postsecondary life as final exams, but financial aid opportunities at Selkirk College help ease stress for students focused on success.

When she enrolled in the Selkirk College resort and hotel management program straight out of Nakusp secondary school in 2013, Kim Hill discovered one of the biggest challenges was how to pay the bills at the end of the month.

Though she had a student loan, Hill was looking for some relief and applied for the Robert Leoppky Bursary.

“I didn’t expect much when I filled out the application, but when I received the notification in the mail just a couple days before Christmas... for me that was the biggest Christmas present I could get,” she says.

The Robert Leoppky Bursary is one of Selkirk College’s newest financial awards and was started by Atlific Hotels and Temple Hotels Inc. in 2013 in honour of the late Robert Leoppky.

Each year students receive $10,000 in bursaries that pay tribute to a man who spent 40 years in the hotel industry.

Hill was one of the four students last year who received $2,500 each.

A graduate of Nakusp secondary school, resort and hotel management program student Kim Hill is one of the many students who has benefitted from the substantial scholarship and bursary opportunities at Selkirk College. arships, bursaries and other awards. Bursaries are based on financial need and scholarships are awarded on academic merit.

“We know how challenging it is for students to balance their studies and make ends meet,” says Selkirk College donor relations coordinator Joleen Kinakin.

“Bursaries and scholarships enable students in all of our programs to ease the financial burden and focus their energies on striving for the success they seek in the classroom.”

Like the Robert Leoppky Bursary, Selkirk College depends on the generosity of donors like Atlific Hotels and Temple Hotels Inc. to make the awards possible. Later this month, the college will bring together students and donors at the annual Bursary Tea which is held at Nelson’s Tenth Street Campus. More than 250 bursaries will be handed out at the January 31 event.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for our donors to make direct connections with the students they are helping,” says Kinakin. “Without individuals, companies and organizations stepping forward to create these important gifts for Selkirk College students, getting the proper education might be beyond reach for many people.”

Choosing the Proper Pathway Hill has now completed three of her four semesters in the resort and hotel management program and now there’s one final fourmonth push to graduation in April.

With a wealth of knowledge already gained — including a summer internship at the Nakusp visitor centre — Hill is pleased with her decision to choose Selkirk College.

“Moving to a bigger city was a little stressful for me, but the school is great,” says the 19-year-old. “I love the small classrooms,

it’s not like in university where there are so many people. You get to know your teachers and classmates pretty well.”

Though the $2,500 Robert Leoppky Bursary is the largest award she has received during her time at Selkirk College, Hill has also been awarded a couple of other scholarships. She says if students take time to consider the opportunities, the financial rewards are available.

“There are so many awards out there,” says Hill, who plans to pursue a career in event planning upon graduation which she hopes to start at the Westin Calgary or Chateau Lake Louise. “You just need to do your research and then apply... you never know what you are going to get.”

Family program helps son – and mom

L

eaving everything behind to start a new life can be scary, but that’s exactly what Lani did ten years ago. “If my Dad didn’t pass away I wouldn’t have come. I wanted to help my mom support my younger brother and sister.”

Lani got a job in a camp at the Mica Dam, near Revelstoke. “At first I didn’t talk to anyone. I was sad, I didn’t have any friends.” But over time, Lani made friends at the camp, where she eventually met her husband. In

2009, the couple had a baby boy named Evan.

Lani got information about programs for families and when Evan was three months old, Lani and her mother-in-law took him to the Mother Goose program in Revelstoke.

“I thought it was fun. I didn’t know any of the baby songs but I met other moms.”

The Mother Goose program facilitator printed the songs for Lani and she studied them at home. “My husband said ‘it’s not a test’ but I wanted to get the words right!”

When Lani and her family moved to Castlegar she looked online to find programs she could attend with Evan. She found what she was looking for at Kootenay Family Place – a family literacy program offered by the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) for English as a Second Language (ESL) families with young children.

Lani made friends at the ESL family program, lots of friends, and became an unofficial leader of the group, organizing parties, play dates and outings. “In Revelstoke I had a big group of Filipino friends. I was afraid I would be lonely in Castlegar. But, when you meet people who have all come from a different country, you connect.”

Lani noticed a difference in Evan too.

He enjoyed doing the crafts and listening to stories in circle. His social skills improved, and he became more independent.

“ESL Family Time is a wonderful program.

It is good for the parents and good for the kids.

It helped Evan be ready for school. I enjoy the speakers. We have had a dental-hygienist, public health nurse and a yoga teacher come to the program to talk to the parents.”

What is STEAM? STEAM learning is an authentic, hands-on approach to learning that integrates science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. The acronym STEAM originated with the National Science Foundation; STEAM incorporates the arts.

Fun Activities for ages 5 to 8

⚫ Gather household objects that make different noises, e.g. plastic containers with something inside, spoons, pot lids, and toys. Make lots of different sounds and rhythms. Use objects that make both hard and soft sounds. Talk about what you hear. ⚫ Make a treasure basket. Fill a basket with safe household items that have different colours, textures, weights, sizes, etc. For younger babies, a basket with soft fabric, a soft toy, a soft sponge, and soft towel is appropriate. ⚫ Young babies can hold, mouth, and drop blocks. And they can watch you stack and knock over blocks. As children develop, they can start to sort, stack and build with blocks. Make sure the blocks are designed for very young children.

⚫ Use a magnifying glass to explore your home and yard. How do things look different? Do you notice new details?

Draw what you see. ⚫ Play Tri-spy. In this version of I spy, choose a category of things to look for, e.g. something orange, something shiny, something funny. ⚫ Cook together. You can follow a recipe or get creative. Salad, pizza and cookies are all popular choices. Added bonus: children often want to eat what they have prepared. ⚫ What do you think will float? Collect and make some things you think will float, such as plastic bottle tops, corks, and waterproof toys; then try them out.

Don’t forget to add some things that won’t float.

⚫ Use things around the house to build something together. For example, you can design and create a scavenger hunt, a board game, a Lego structure, a domino run, an item of jewellery or clothing, a piece of music or a recipe. ⚫ Origami is a popular activity with some children. Start with simple paper folding, like the origami talking dog. There are lots of origami instructions available online or in books at the library. ⚫ Draw or write with invisible ink. Dip a cotton swab into lemon juice and write or draw on heavy paper or cardstock. Use heat (a hair dryer, light bulb or iron) to make the picture or words appear. Be careful; too much heat and the paper could catch fire. Try different liquids and compare the results.

More than half of Castlegar homes exceed radon threshold

Health officials say not to panic, but actions should be taken to reduce radon levels within homes CHRIS STEDILE West Kootenay Advertiser

In a recent study, over half of homes tested in Castlegar were above the national threshold for radon gas exposure. The threshold sits at 200 Bq/m3.

This information comes from the BC Lung Association which released the results of the largest ever community-wide home radon testing project done in Canada.

The project offered free radon test kits to Castlegar homeowners and tenants to test indoor radon levels in their homes. 230 residents participated in the study, of which 158 returned their kits for analysis and 59 per cent tested for high

levels of radon within their homes.

Radon is a colourless, odorless gas and can be found in soil, rocks and water. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer with Health Canada estimating as many as 16 per cent of lung cancer deaths can be attributed to radon exposure.

The guideline states that residents in any home that tests above threshold should take action to reduce radon levels in their home.

Britt Swoveland, Provincial Coordinator for RadonAware said, “People shouldn’t panic if they have a radon problem in their home because it’s really exposure over a long term that will cause problems. However, the best time to take action is the present and we en-

Nevertheless, most would surely enjoy the sleek lines of the Toyota FT-1, designed to be at home on the track and a heck of a ticket magnet on the highway.

Future collector cars: Five cars to buy now

Most 5- to 10-year-old cars are just used cars, destined to head steadily to the bottom of their depreciation curve as an intermediate stop on the way to their ultimate destination— the local pick-andpull lot.

Here are five used cars that deserve a cushy spot in the Garage Mahal of a collector: 2009 Pontiac Solstice GXP coupe: Pontiac’s demise during GM’s bankruptcy was a sad story, and the loss of this fantastic sports car made it even more bitter. The Solstice roadster was an attractive car that suffered from terminal packaging problems. The Solstice coupe was drop-

dead gorgeous and far more practical.

Just 1,200 were built before GM did the equivalent of burning, pillaging and sowing salt in the field—they killed Pontiac, offed the Solstice and closed the Delaware plant in which it was built. Used coupes with normal miles have barely depreciated and low mileage cars are already appreciating.

2006 Chrysler Crossfire SRT6: The 2006 Crossfire SRT6 is undoubtedly the greatest lovechild of the affair between Chrysler and Mercedes-Benz in the early 2000s.

While the standard Crossfire coupe and convertible where offered from 20042008, the SRT6 was only available in

showrooms in 2005, and as a factory special order in 2006. This Chrysler/Benz mashup was essentially a Mercedes-Benz SLK32 AMG redressed as a hardtop coupe with breakneck performance, featuring a handcrafted AMG supercharged V-6 laying down 330 hp to the rear wheels.

Hindsight is always 20/20, and the only regrettable decision in development of the car was to offer only the AMG signature automatic transmission, making it the only model in the Crossfire lineup not offered with a 5-speed manual. Fewer than 1,500 were produced, making this model quite rare.

With its aggressive styling, a high-revving 4-cylinder engine producing 237 hp, an ultra-low center of gravity, and 50/50 weight distribution, an unmolested S2000 is bound to be a future collector car. However, due to the affordability of the S2000, many have suffered a cruel and all-too-usual punishment at the hands of the “Fast and Furious” generation. It’s the Cadillac of station wagons

The CTS Sport Wagon (2010 – 2013) was the first in-house full production wagon (based on a sedan) made by Cadillac.

The CTS has clean, crisp, edgy styling that is distinctively modern Cadillac. The sedan edition of the highly successful rear-drive CTS was introduced for the 2003 model year and captured numerous awards. Its high-powered V variant, which followed in 2004, embarrassed Euro competitors of the day by smashing the production car lap speed record at the revered Nurburgring, in Germany.

These days, wagons are less popular here than in Europe, so the available local used car market pool, for this edition of the CTS, is not a very deep one.

North Americans tend to buy utility type vehicles instead of a wagon. A wagon is typically closer to a sedan in terms of driving dynamics, yet has more than double the cargo capability.

A CTS Sport Wagon is a little taller and heavier than the sedan, it offers 736 litres of storage space with the rear seats up, and 1,642 litres with them folded. There’s also a clever sub-floor cargo management system and the rear door is poweroperated.

The base engine is a 3.0-litre (255 horsepower) V6 that’s mated to six-speed automatic transmission.

The other engine is a 24-valve, 3.6 litre, direct injection (304 horsepower) V6, that provides more torque at lower engine speeds, yet fuel economy is about the same. Using the newly revised rating

method, consumption should be about 12.8/8.6 L/100 km (city/highway).

The CTS can also come with an all-wheel drive system that normally splits torque 30/70 front-to-rear, to maintain its sporty (rear-drive) driving dynamic.

It’s capable of delivering up to100 per cent of torque to either axle if needed, but there is a small increase fuel consumption.

An interesting adaptive forward lighting system was included in an option package that came with Xenon headlights. This system automatically adjusts headlight direction for improved visibility at night. It can also turn the headlights up to 15 degrees inboard and 5 degrees outboard, providing better vision while cornering.

The big news for 2011 model year was the addition of a, limited edition, high-performance CTS-V Sport Wagon model. Like the V sedan it’s powered by a 556-horsepower supercharged V8 engine and came with 6-speed manual transmission or optional 6-speed automatic.

You’ll likely pay a $20,000 premium (maybe more) to acquire a (hard to find) used CTS-V Wagon.

The 2012 edition of the CTS Sport Wagon came with a new 3.6-litre V6 engine that is more powerful (318-horsepower) yet lighter than the 3.6-litre engine it replaced. It also came with a new grille, standard Bluetooth and a new option package that made it look like a V Wagon.

No significant changes followed for 2013 and it was the last production year of this generation of the CTS. Although it can be harder to find in the used car mar-

ket, Sport Wagon adds a handy utility bonus, without destroying the scintillating driving experience that is Cadillac CTS. Acura RDX breaks with automotive tradition When one manufacturer comes out with a vehicle, you can be sure that the other manufacturers will match the equipment and price, almost to the dollar with their own products.

There are exceptions to every rule and the Acura RDX is one of those exceptions. The value that this entry-level premium SUV offers is so good, it is hard to find a vehicle that can compete on price, features and overall ease of use. Based on the hot-selling Honda CRV, Acura takes what is good about that vehicle and transforms it into an Acura, full of luxury touches, more power and refinement that makes it the best value in the hyper competitive compact luxury SUV space.

With every great deal there is usually one area that lets down the overall package and in the case of the RDX it is exterior styling. The Acura grille is less intrusive than the previous model but it might be rather bland. Wheel sizes are kept to 18-inches, even the optional sport wheels are only 18-inches. The rest of the RDX is inoffensive but not striking either. The size and shape is perfect for most buyers looking for a compact SUV, with large easy to use doors. The RDX is sold in only two trim levels; the base is $41,390, almost dollar-for-dollar the same starting price as all other small luxury SUVs. It is the optional Tech package that

makes this a steal. Fully loaded, the RDX Tech is just $3000 more at $44,390.

Inside Acura takes the CR-V’s selling points like a roomy cabin, flat rear floor, automatic folding rear seats and pumps up the features. The dash is nicely arranged with much higher trim and finish on the dash, doors and armrests. Standard features include heated leather seats, power moon roof, push button start and a multi angle rearview camera. The Tech package adds an 8-inch centre screen with voice activated navigation, a power tailgate, duel climate control and an upgraded stereo system, for just $3000 more. Try and find these features in one of the competitive German of Japanese vehicles for just over $44,000. It doesn’t exist.

Acura and Honda are moving towards a two-screen centre console, the RDX is still sold with a single screen and this makes the operation much simpler. The new systems are eye catching but simplicity over flash has a place.

Drive With manufacturers racing to include smaller turbocharged engines with eight and nine speed automatics, the RDX is still sold with a trusty 3.5L V6 and a proven 6-speed automatic. Take notice, this might not be the case with the next model so buying this simpler RDX might be a good buy. The 273hp engine is very quick off the line; it cruises with ease and passes without hesitation.

In real world highway and city driving the RDX returned 13L/100km just slightly worse than the 12L used in the CR-V. All wheel drive (AWD) comes standard on all models but it is a simpler system than the previous model. The suspension is less aggressive than the past model too. This has all been done to produce a ride that will appeal to a wide range of buyers. In everyday driving, the laid-back approach is welcome but the powerful engine always makes the commute fun.

Verdict Some good news, the rumour mill is grinding out potential new updates for the 2016

model year including a refreshed front end and interior tweaks. Stay tuned. As it stands, the RDX is a bargain in the small luxury SUV space but this Acura model almost PLEASE READ THE FINE PRINT: Offers valid until February 2, 2015. Bob McHugh For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, I’ve been writing about cars for over 25 years and I’m a long-term member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). My auto background is mainly in the service side of the industry as I’ve always had a keen interest in knowing how things work. Especially those oily, greasy parts that make the wheels go around.

My first car was an early sixties Triumph Herald Coupe (web example photo) that was traded-in to a dealership where I worked as an apprentice auto mechanic, back in Dublin, Ireland. It spent more time off the road, being repaired, than on the road, during my time as its owner.

A Herald had the same chassis and a similar powertrain as the much nicer looking Triumph Spitfire, which was sold in North America.

At the BC Automobile Association I initially worked as a mobile Vehicle Inspector in the Vehicle Inspection Service. The vehicle was an AMC Gremlin and it was painted to look like a cut-away or skeleton view of the car’s mechanical bits. A small car with a big gas-guzzling engine, a Gremlin was an odd choice of vehicle for that job and the paint job just added to its weirdness, yet I grew to like it.

Currently I enjoy serving on the AJAC Technology Awards panel and have also been involved in the promotion of trade skills training for young people in BC. When time permits, I still like to get my hands dirty and give my son a helping hand with, his pride and joy, a 1966 Ford Thunderbird coupe. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

Ian Harwood has been involved in the light truck industry for the past 30 years. His career started with the opening of a small 4-wheel drive shop in the early 80s. This shop was involved in custom fabrication, complete 4x4 rebuilds, and sales of off-road related products.

This would prepare him for his current position as Manager for Custom Truck Parts, one of the largest accessory warehouses in Canada.

Ian started his journalism career in the late 1090s with a column in a national magazine for automotive enthusiasts.

In the spring of 2005 Ian was approached by a local news outlet to write a weekly column. Wilderness exploring, fishing and four wheeling have been his passion since he was a teenager.

Some memorable moments in Ian’s career are flying in by hto the famous Rubicon Trail in Northern California and driving a 2007 Jeep Wrangler out of the backwoods, up a waterfall and out of the trail to Lake Tahoe. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca
