Yosuke Ito loves New Westminster. So much so, he thinks the city’s waterfront would be the perfect place for couples to express their love for each other. Ito and his girlfriend of two years, Anna, placed a padlock marked with a heart and their initials on the fence at the east end of Pier Park, near the urban beach, on Saturday. They’re hoping others will follow their lead on Valentine’s Day, creating New Westminster’s own

In fact, their first date was at the Circus School in River Market. Enticing others to lock up their love at the park might bring more people down to discover the area. “It’s such an amazing space,” said Ito. It might also put New West on the international love-lock map. The City of Paris recently prohibited love locks from the Ponts des Arts, one of three bridges across the Seine that have become destinations for padlock packing lovers. Please see LOVE LOCKS, A3

The builders of the Fraser River Middle School will compensate the New Westminster school district for the postponement of its opening by a year. Superintendent/ CEO John Gaiptman said the compensation will pay for the district having to extend its office lease at Columbia Square by eight months. The initial plan was for the school, being built on the former site of John Robson elementary, to open September 2015. But the board of education decided last week to hold off for a year because construction wasn’t proceeding to plan. The district also determined opening it during the school year was not practical. The project also includes building a new board office next to the school. The Columbia Square lease, which costs the district $700,000 a year, was to expire Oct. 31. The compensation allows that lease to be extended to June 30, said Gaiptman. see YELLOWRIDGE, A3
