Wildlife allocation numbers at heart of dispute Kevin Parnell Hunters from three area wildlife clubs will be staging a protest in West Kelowna this weekend, asking the provincial government to reconsider a wildlife allocation policy in a public fight that is pitting hunters and guideoutfitters against each other.

In December, the government announced a new B.C. Wildlife Allocation Policy that lays out how the different species of animals allotted to hunters is split between B.C. resident hunters and non-resident hunters, who must be guided to hunt in B.C. It’s an issue the groups have been fighting about since the government first introduced the policy in 2007.

But the latest reworking of the policy has resident hunters up in arms about the allocation, which they say gives an unfair split to B.C.’s guide-outfitters.

“Our message is that the policy is not good for B.C residents and it’s not good for wildlife,” said Sean Richardson, of the Oceola Fish and Game Club.

“I don’t think B.C. residents agree with 20 to 40 per cent of wildlife being allocated to foreign hunters.”

In region 8, which includes the Okanagan, splits range from 80-20 for bull moose to 70-30 for big horn sheep and 60-40 for grizzly bears, which are not in high demand by local hunters.

The Guide-Outfitters Association of B.C. (GOABC), which represents some 245

hunting guides across the province, says the new policy came after a decade of negotiations between the provincial government, the GOABC and the B.C. Wildlife Federation, which represents resident hunters.

The two sides among hunters don’t agree on how to properly split the hunting resource.

The guide-outfitters say legislated splits will help revive an industry that

brings high-yield tourists into B.C., while resident hunters claim the splits make it harder for them to provide healthy, local meats for their families and wonder why local businesses need help from the government to survive.

The Guide Outfitters Association of B.C. says it’s time to put the last decade of fighting among the two hunting groups in the past.

“Neither side is happy

with the splits,” said executive director Scott Ellis.

“We wanted more.

We lost flexibility so it’s a problem and there will be hardships still from our side.

“But at least we see there is certainty for the industry so we appreciate that.

“We are supporting the decision and encourage it to go into legislation so we can stop fighting about the piece of the

pie.”

Ellis maintained that individual resident hunters will not feel much impact by the allocation changes and that the hunting opportunity will remain much the same as species such as mule deer, whitetail deer and black bears will be managed through general open seasons.

He added the GOABC took losses in the negotiations including access to vacant areas

of the province, which guides are not allowed to hunt in.

But while the guideoutfitters are asking for the policy to move into law, the B.C. Wildlife Federation says the new allocation policy is weighted unfairly in favour of non-residents and is a big departure from what was originally negotiated in 2007.

A week ago a public protest was held in Prince George and this weekend the group will be in Kelowna, asking its members to write letters to the government so the policy can be revisited.

“Ultimately, we want to put all of this behind us and work with the guide-outfitters (to support the resource) but the problem is the policy is not acceptable and the fear is it will get legislated at these splits (in allocation),” said Richardson.

“This policy is nowhere near what was negotiated and agreed to by the hunting community.”

For its part the provincial government says the changes will result in the loss of an estimated 618 hunting opportunities for residents, a four per cent reduction across B.C. The local group will hold a protest Saturday, 11 a.m., at the old Zellers parking lot, 3571 Old Okanagan Highway, in West Kelowna.

If any of the 15 groups reportedly interested in building a medical marijuana production facility in Kelowna are successful, city council has started the process of making it easier for them to test their product

once it is grown.

Council has agreed to send to public hearing a staff recommendation to change its zoning bylaws for the four industrial zones where medical marijuana production would be allowed to facilitate creation of analytical testing laboratories.

Subdivision approval manager Ryan Smith told council Monday the change to allow the laboratories is currently just for the industrial zones and not for the agricultural zones, where medical marijuana production is also allowed. That change is expected to be forwarded to council for its approval later.

Smith told council there are currently 15 groups interested in building medical marijuana production facilities here under the federal government’s new commercial production rules.

But so far, none have received a licence from Health Canada, which grants final authorization.

Individual municipalities have land use approval, however, on where the facilities can be built.

Last year, Kelowna council agreed to allow them only in the business, heavy, general and central industrial zones, following the provincial lead,

Recently, a company planning to build a similar facility in West Kelowna had its request for a variance to the bylaw requirement that it be located at least 150 metres from the nearest residence rejected, leaving that project in limbo.

The analytical labs would be used to test the product grown at the commercial facilities.

Smith said while there could be more than one laboratory built depending on the number of production facilities here, he did not expect every facility would have its own laboratory.

Currently, there is believed to be just one federally-approved commercial medical marijuana growing facility in the Okanagan, a small operation located in the Vernon area.

Ecole KLO Middle School principal honoured for her leadership skills The principal at Ecole KLO Middle School has been named one of Canada’s outstanding principals by a Canadian education group that offers ongoing professional development to school principals.

KLO Middle School principal Raquel Steen is one of 40 individuals across Canada named to the list of Canada’s Outstanding Principals as individuals who demonstrate innovation, have an entrepreneurial spirit and are creative in finding solutions and opportunities.

The awards are given out by The Learning Partnership, a national charity that promotes publicly-funded education in Canada.

Steen first joined the Central Okanagan School District in 1995 as a French immersion teacher at KSS and has also taught at Mount Boucherie Secondary, KLO Secondary and KLO Middle School.

In 1996, she received her first administrative assignment as viceprincipal at Dr. Knox Middle School before being transferred to KLO Middle in 2007 as vice-

principal.

She has been in her current role as principal at KLO Middle since July 2010.

“Raquel Steen is a most worthy recipient of this award which acknowledges her outstanding leadership in our schools,” said school district superintendent Hugh Gloster. “To be selected amongst only 40 school leaders being recognized throughout the nation is a great tribute to her leadership.”

Steen, one of only two winners in B.C. and the only one from the Central Okanagan, along with the other winners represent every province and territory in the country and will receive their awards at the 11th annual Canada’s Outstanding Principals gala on Feb. 24, in Toronto.

The federal Liberal Party is off to a good start in the Okanagan to keep its vow for half its candidates to be women in the next federal election.

Three of the party’s four candidates in the valley ridings are women—Karley Scott in Okanagan Similkameen Nicola, Connie Denesiuk in South OkanaganWest Kootenay and Cindy Derkaz in North Okanagan-Shuswap.

Last Thursday, the trio joined Vancouver-Quadra Liberal MP Joyce Murray

at a forum about women in politics at the UBC Okanagan campus.

Ironically, the forum was organized by the only man running for the party in the Okanagan, Kelowna-Lake Country candidate Stephen Fuhr who was not able to attend.

The four women urged everyone, regardless of gender, to get involved in the political process.

Scott, who won the Liberal nomination in Okanagan-SimilkameenNicola just last month, is a lawyer and mother of two who was recently called to the bar.

She said she is running

for three reasons—her children, her community and her country.

For her children, a girl and a boy aged six and eight, she wants to be a model for her daughter to show women can excel in leadership roles and for her son, she wants to teach him to respect women in those positions.

For her community, she said she wants to see its diversity better represented and having lived all parts of Canada, she wants to help bridge the aboriginal and nonaboriginal communities of this country. Scott is Metis.

The Person’s Case changed that when five brave women, who became known as the Famous Five, challenged their lack of legal status in the courts and won.

“I recognize that I stand on the shoulders of the women who have gone before me,” said Scott.

In the upcoming federal election, Scott will challenge incumbent Conservative OkanaganSimilkameen MP Dan Albas. That riding will have its boundaries and name changed in the next election as a result of redistribution. But it will still include West Kelowna.

Scott, like the other three women she was speaking with, said prior to running for the Liberal nomination such a move was not part of her life plan. But Scott and the others all felt it was important to let their name stand and to get involved in the process.

Denesiuk said she decided to seek the Liberal nomination in part because of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s reaction to the “Robo-call” scandal which stemmed from voters in a Quebec riding being called prior to the last federal election and deliberately given wrong information about where to vote.

“I expected him to be outraged, and he wasn’t,” said Denesiuk.

She is also upset by the Conservative government pushing through so-called omnibus bills containing reams of legislation on many issues, all wrapped into one bill. She said many of the included issues were important and should have been properly debated in Parliament on an individual basis.

The third point that prompted her to seek the nomination was her concern that Harper, several years ago, had prorogued Parliament rather than face a confidence vote by MPs because its was clear his then minority government would not have survived.

Derkaz, who is also a lawyer, said she is concerned about the lack of young people who vote, saying it’s very important to turn that around.

“Why aren’t youth engaged in politics?” she asked the forum audience.

she believed it’s because Canada’s current crop of federal politicians do not speak about issues that young people have concerns about.

Derkaz said over the last five years, she has increasingly become concerned about what she feels is happening to Canadian democracy , pointing out that 12 of the 16 former Status of Women offices across the country have now been closed by the government.

She also cited the issue of missing and murdered indigineous women in this country, saying the federal response has been shameful.

Derkaz said the justice minister saying there is no need for a special inquiry into the issue because it is covered by the government’s “tough on crime” legislative packed is “obviously wrong.”

While Murray also criticized the current Conservative government and Harper, she also offered some advice for those seeking public office.

Murray, her party’s defence critic, an MP for 14 years and before that a B.C. MLA and cabinet minister, said personal contact is critical in any effort to get elected, giving voters an up-close and personal view of a candidate.

Murray said when she ran in the federal by-election that got her elected for the first time in Vancouver-Quadra, she knocked on thousands of doors over a nine-moth period after winning the nomination.

She won that by-election by just 158 votes.

“Which doors made the difference? I don’t know,” she said.

But, she added, some obviously did.

Alistair Waters Police in three provinces, including here in the Okanagan, are asking for the public’s help to identify and locate a suspect in a series of armed robberies that took place at financial institutions across B.C, Alberta and Saskatchewan over the last 12 weeks.

Among the robberies was the hold-up Dec. 9 of the Interior Savings Credit Union branch on 32nd Street in Vernon.

“All the robberies involved a weapon, either being produced or mentioned,” said Kelowna RCMP Const.

During the robberies he wore dark clothing, gloves, a black toque and sunglasses, said Clark.

Clark said the public should not approach the suspect as he is considered armed and dangerous.

Clark said both the investigation to date and video surveillance collected from the crime scenes appear to indicate the robberies are the work of the same man.

What has police stumped, however, is the lack of any pattern to the robberies.

Some occurred earlier in the afternoon, others later, and one at night.

With the exception of over Christmas, there was a robbery just about each week.

Two weeks after a 62-year-old West Kelowna man was stabbed at a West Kelowna business, the RCMP are asking the public for help in locating the suspect.

On Jan. 11 at 3:28 p.m., West Kelowna RCMP say its officers responded to a report of a stabbing at Sidney’s Swap & Shop, 2474 Main St. A lone masked man had reportedly entered the shop and asked for change before demanding money.

Despite being given an undisclosed amount of cash, police say the man produced a knife and stabbed a 62-year-old West Kelowna man.

The suspect fled on a bicycle and has not been located despite the fact staff at the store recognized him as a homeless man living in the area.

The suspect is described as a white male, 30 to 35-years-old, 5-foot-9 (175 cm) tall and weighing about 154 pounds (70 kg). He’s described as having a slim build and was last seen wearing a green hooded jacket.

PEDESTRIAN HIT BY CAR

The RCMP are reminding the public, especially the elderly, to always obey all crosswalk signals after a 90-year-old Williams Lake man suffered serious injuries last Wednesday afternoon in West Kelowna after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Highway 97.

According to police, shortly after 3 p.m. a pedestrian was hit by a southbound Hyundai, driven by a 50-yearold West Kelowna woman, on Highway 97 at Daimler Road.

Witnesses told police an elderly man was attempting to cross the highway against a red light at the time.

Police said their investigation suggests the driver was proceeding on a green light in the right-hand lane when the collision occurred and was unable to see the man until it was too late.

The man suffered what are being described as significant, serious, non life-threatening injuries in the crash. He was taken Kelowna General Hospital.

No charges were laid against the driver, and none are anticipated.

Why are we taking this action?

On December 14, 2014 government gave foreign hunters, who are represented by guide-outfitters, 20-40% of allocated wildlife. This decision is unprecedented in North America and is not good for British Columbians, resident hunters or wildlife. In most jurisdictions in North America, foreign hunters are allocated 5-10% of harvestable wildlife. This means fewer opportunities for resident hunters.

Justification for this policy appears to be centered around subsidizing the Guide Outfitting industry in British Columbia at the expense of British Columbians. In the last 10 years, the number of resident hunters in BC has grown from 84,000 to 102,000 – an increase of roughly 20%. During the same time, the number of foreign hunters has dropped 30%, from 6,500 to 4,500. There are currently about 230 Guide / Outfitters in British Columbia. At a time where the number of resident hunters is increasing while the number of foreign

hunters are decreasing, why would government decide to allocate more wildlife to foreigners?

Resident hunters contribute more than $230 million annually to the British Columbia economy. Resident hunters donate more than 300,000 hours of their time toward conservation projects. Government collects more than $9 million per year in the form of license fees and habitat surcharges for conservation from resident hunters. These numbers are extremely important to wildlife and the economy.

Government has decided to subsidize a small group of business people against the will of voters and taxpayers. This policy must be revisited and changed.

Wildlife is a public resource which is being privatized. We have had great support from non-hunting British Columbians in this battle. Policies such as this could soon effect anglers, berry pickers, beachcombers and parks users. It’s time for residents to stand up and make their voices heard.

Squeeze play on families As we learned last week, camping fees, like everything else (MSP, Hydro, ICBC), are going up.

The Liberal government has announced that, as of March 15, fees to camp in provincial parks will increase $2 to $5.

That might not sound like much, but it’s going to cost $35 a night to sleep on the ground in provincial parks, up from $30.

Over a long weekend, that would total $105.

Add on the cost of travel, food and other necessities, and camping is no longer a cheap option for young families, or young adults working minimum-wage jobs.

According to the B.C. Ministry of Environment, this is the first province-wide increase in camping fees since 2010. The varied rate increases take into account local demand and economic conditions, as well as private camping availability.

The province collected about $17 million from its park and recreation fees last year, while spending $22 million on direct park operating costs.

Meanwhile, campsite use is on the rise in B.C. since the introduction of an online reservation service. Discover Camping handled 133,000 reservations last year, nearly a 10 per cent increase over 2013.

Camping is about the least expensive vacation opportunity, and squeezing residents for more money just when gas prices have plummeted comes off as a cash grab.

It’s well documented how cash-poor Canadians are, especially here in B.C., where housing prices are out of line.

We deserve a break. Campgrounds get families outdoors, together. They are where kids learn to respect nature, to start a fire, where they chop wood and swim in the lake, roast marshmallows and gaze at the stars.

They also attract tourists, who spend money in town.

Camping used to be something everyone could afford.

Raising camping fees is just another example of the Liberals taking advantage of people who can least afford to pay.

Local governments are trying their best to snuff out pot They likely won’t all be approved, but City according to Kelowna Confidential city staff, there are 15 proposals to build ALISTAIR commercial medical WATERS marijuana facilities in the city.

None have received the much sought after licence required from Health Canada under the new federal rules that went into effect last March. But it is the feds, not the city, that gets the final say on whether those pot plants will be allowed to get up and running here.

For the groups that want to start to commercially grow that wacky-tobacci, a trip to city hall will not be enough.

While the city does get a say in the land use decisions for the site of proposed commercial grow ops through zoning, Ottawa has made sure it alone maintains the final say in who gets to grow pot legally in this country.

So municipalities are looking to exert their influence in other ways.

An example of that was seen in West Kelowna last week, where the district council rejected a variance request by one group planning to build a facility in the industrial area of the municipality. Hearing from commercial neighbours of the proposed site—a helicopter builder and mattress factory—council rejected the request to reduce the setback required for the building to 75 metres from 150 metres to the nearest zones where homes are permitted.

The fact a four-lane highway separated the proposed lot from the area with the homes didn’t sway council’s thinking. The council said it was concerned about the potential for odour in the neighbourhood.

taking place. City council has sent a bid to change the industrial zones where commercial growing facilities are allowed to public hearing. The change would allow for laboratories to test the pot once its grown. Ah, cannabis quality control.

In the case of a city the size of Kelowna, 15 proposals seems like a lot.

It’s not quite akin to the deluge of beer and wine store proposals that sprang up when the province opened the floodgate to that enterprise across B.C. several years ago, but it’s still more than your average white-bread, conservative Okanagan town of 120,000 people likely want, will support, need or will otherwise have.

Of course the total volume of pot to be produced is likely going to be a lot less than it was when every Tom, Dick or Harriet was growing it in their basement—with or without a licence—under the old way of doing things.

Maybe a lot of those same people still are growing it for themselves.

But it shows that the interest in commercial marijuana production in this province is strong—strong enough to spark the interest of 15 companies willing to spend a lot of money to meet the new federal standards for a production facility.

As for the other end of the joint—recreational use— this province is still likely a long ways off following Washington State and Colorado’s lead in making pot legal.

But with public opinion on the issue being what it is and acceptance now the position of many, whether it’s for medical or recreational use, pot is becoming a drug of choice .

‘Humungous’ electric bills To the editor: Further to letters from Dave Hamilton and Nicholas Swart (Capital News Jan 14 and Jan. 9/15 respectively) regarding electricity rates going up as smart meters come on stream, investigation by gov’t officials into the operation of these meters is obviously required.

While residing in Kelowna 1.5 years ago Fortis swapped our community’s hydro meters out twice in upgrade to smart meters.

Humungous hydro usage bills followed for everyone, which would appear to imply the usage measurement to be different on these machines from the old versions.

Follow up with Fortis proved futile, but assistance from the BC Utilities Commission on my account determined that Fortis could produce no concrete evidence for the readings and adjustments were made.

Now this month the same fiasco has occurred in my new home with BC Hydro smart meters. Usage had been consistent and even took a 200 kW.h drop per billing period to account for the elimination of a hot tub that was in operation the whole of last winter.

Now a sudden 400 kW.h increase has been reported in the billing period. BC Hydro was

contacted regarding the discrepancy, pointing out the elimination of this high usage piece of equipment, as well as significant home improvements from last winter including a totally drywalled interior, replacement of old badly leaking patio doors to coincide with previously installed all new windows, upgrade to low energy efficient light bulbs - all the things Hydro says will result in savings.

It was also pointed out that the home has had an electrician certified inspection, is maintained with a new gas furnace & hot water tank, and there have been no modifications/life style changes to substantiate the reported increase in power usage. All they could say is do a breaker test and wait for your next billing.

These meters are a disaster!

I have been a hydro customer for many years and have never encountered unsubstantiated spikes in hydro power usage with the old style meters. These meters appear to be a licence for power suppliers to gouge their customers, and the public needs to request the gov’t conduct proper investigations into their use.

I certainly intend to do so!

Rushed on the job means senior is ‘not seen’ To the editor: Re Alisen Kates’ letter regarding the Interior Health employee who barged into her house, (Senior Feels Apology is Due, Jan. 21 Capital News), I do think an apology is in order if not from IH, certainly from the worker who was so unaware as not to look at the person answering the door and immediately realize this lady was not her client.

If Alison was a new client some intros would have been in order in the first place.

Being rushed on one’s job is absolutely

no excuse for not seeing the person one is talking to.

And in case the idea needs reinforcement, “seniors” are not some grey lump of porridge to be slid over en masse, but aging individuals, as the younger folks also are, even if not quite elders yet.

So yes, do continue to look at ‘seniors’ as regular people and be courteous. This situation certainly was no recommendation for ‘age friendly’ or ‘better at home.’

You’re not alone with stroke To the editor: The Kelowna Stroke Recovery Club is an organization that has been active in our community since 1981. A member of the Stroke Recovery Association of B.C., we are a non-profit organization that works closely with anyone recovering from a stroke.

Our goal it to enable individuals to live as well and independently as possible. The tangible results from the branch include increasing self esteem, lowering incidence of depression, maintaining a plan for recovery, reducing the dependence on acute care beds and preventing admission to long term facilities where possible.

A stroke is an affliction of the brain that is sudden in onset and causes weakness or paralysis of one side of the body and other, with possible symptoms such as loss of sensational disorder.

Doctors refer to a a stroke as a cerebral vascular accident or hemiplegia. The most important key to survival is your own mental attitude.

After a stroke most peoples’ lives change so drastically that they do not want to go back into the public. Although there are many changes the picture is not always gloom and doom.

This is where the Stroke Recovery Club comes into the picture. The Kelowna club is

a support group for victims of stroke, their spouses and families. The program consists of exercise, lunch, then activities every Thursday.

We have educational programs, informative speakers, caregivers meetings, mental aerobics, crafts, discussion groups, bowling, a speech maintenance program as needed and much more.

We raise funds by having a craft, bazaar and bake sale twice a year and we also receive donations from some service clubs in our community.

I have been with the club for 32 years and its co-ordinator for 24 of those years. I am the liaison between the hospital, health unit, rehab and doctors on our members’ behalf.

I will visit anyone affected by stroke in their home when requested, before they come to the club and will give informative talks to any organization.

Why have property assessments for Kelowna homes gone crazy?

To the editor: What on earth is going on with these crazy property assessments?

Our assessment just went from $572,000 to $667,000—an increase of 16.6 per cent in just one year. If I thought we could get anywhere near $600,000 for this house, I would sell today. I’m sure the Real Estate Board could confirm this.

We wondered if our neighbours’ had also increased, so we looked online. The increases for the 10 closest houses on our street were 3.6 per cent, 7 per cent, 8 per cent, 8 per cent, 8 per cent, 10 per cent, 10 per cent, 11 per cent, 11.8 per cent and 13 per cent.

I could accept it if everyone went up the same amount, but where is the logic in this?

With this ridiculous increase added to the new tax hike, we will be paying much more than the 3.5 per cent increase that is being proposed, and of course we will have to pay more every year hereafter.

I would love to know who exactly is responsible for this and exactly how they arrived at this number.

“We were having supper one evening, and I asked the girls about their plans after graduating from college,” said Keen, a director with the Kelowna Innovation Society.

“My wife and I were stunned to hear them say they planned to leave Kelowna to pursue their careers because there was ‘nothing for them here.’

I knew something had to change.”

As past CEO of Accelerate Okanagan and an active member of the local high-tech industry, Keen knew there was a burgeoning tech sector growing quietly— apparently too quietly— in the Okanagan. And he knew the potential impact that sector could have on the entire community.

“Most people hear ‘high tech’ and only think of computer engineers, software developers, the Internet, and if they’re not a ‘techie’ there aren’t career opportunities for them,” he said.

“But this sector represents so much more.

Firstly, technology crosses industry boundaries, encompassing tourism, agriculture, forestry, mining, etc. And the job opportunities aren’t limited to computer experts. The tech companies servicing these industries need management, business development, sales and marketing, administrators, accountants, human resources, you name it.”

Keen said the tech sector brings clean jobs to the community, and gives students graduating from Okanagan College, UBC Okanagan and other local institutions a chance to live in a beautiful city and find relevant, competitive work in their field.

Instead of heading south to Silicon Valley, or west to the Lower Mainland, he believes young graduates should and can be able to launch their careers here in the Okanagan.

“The tech sector attracts creative, innovative people— artists, actors, musicians —young people wanting to engage in their community. They bring new ideas, energy and vitality to the city,” explained Keen.

“The result is an injection of life into the financial and social economy. And that’s great for a growing community.”

Having been a part

of many think-tank sessions with community leaders to discuss the growing tech sector in the valley, Keen resolved to build something tangible himself on the momentum created from those early talks.

When a group of community leaders gathered under one roof in January 2013 for what proved to be a watershed meeting, they all agreed on some ground rules.

“There had been many great conversations about the tremendous potential,” said Keen.

“It was time to make a concerted effort to turn those conversations into action.”

Keen said all the stakeholders committed to two basic tenants— to leave their particular special interests at the door, and if they started this journey they were going to finish it.

“Everyone’s input was invaluable, but it couldn’t be motivated by a personal agenda, you had to believe this was important as a community member, and if you volunteered to lend your support, the expectation was that you would follow through.

“We needed a 100 per cent commitment from everyone who stepped up, otherwise momentum would stall.”

With these actionoriented goals and a team of dedicated volunteers, it didn’t take long for the group to get things off the ground. The official ground-breaking for what is now known as the Okanagan Centre for Innovation was held in October 2014, less than two years after that first watershed meeting.

The centre, set to open in 2016, will be a stateof-the-art building able to house everything from two-person start-ups to large technology and innovation firms.

Publicly-supported space and services will also be available for entrepreneurs and founders of early-stage companies, non-profits, community groups and social enterprises.

Business, academic and political thought-leaders have been working together to make this centre a reality.

As they now sit around the table formulating strategies to ensure its success, at least one of its members will also be thinking like a “dad at the dinner table.”

Bev Busson experienced a number of firsts during her career with the RCMP. Not only was Busson among the first class of women to join the RCMP, she was also the first woman appointed as Commanding Officer for B.C., the first woman appointed Commissioner of the RCMP and the first police officer to ever be awarded the Order of British Columbia.

as a rookie cop back in 1974 to her extensive experience as a serious crimes investigator and later as the commissioner of the 25,000-member RCMP, Busson not only survived but thrived in the challenging environment.

“If you want to make a difference in other people’s lives, there is no career that can give you more satisfaction achieving that than as an RCMP officer, “ said Busson, who was in Kelowna Thursday night as the keynote speaker for a celebration hosted by the BC RCMP Southeast District to mark the 40th anniversary of women joining the RCMP. Busson, who now lives in Salmon Arm, was joined at the reception by a fellow member of that first RCMP women’s class, Cheryl Joyce, also now retired and living in Lake Country.

Joyce, who already had five years of work experience as a teacher, signed up for the RCMP training class at age 29, and was something of a den mother for that inaugural group which included Busson, ensuring they marched together from class to class, maintained discipline and harmony within what was known as Troop 17, and kept the sergeant major apprised of the group’s daily progress.

“As a troop, we had our ups and downs but in the end we worked very well together,” Joyce recalled previously.

“When I think back, some of the things that happened were pretty funny, but it was stressful at the time.”

At Thursday’s event, Joyce said paving the road for other women to follow presented difficulties, but it was important for her and her classmates to keep their perspective about why they wanted to be cops.

“We wanted to make a difference in people’s lives so we just had go out and do our jobs.”

While she acknowledged there was initial adversity within the RCMP ranks between men and women, in the 40 years since her troop graduated the degree of respect has come a long way. “I think there is a lot of support there today for women being in the RCMP,” Joyce said.

Busson said the RCMP needs to actively recruit women because of what they can bring to the job.

Jay Ingram describes Alzheimer’s as a wicked disease that society has ignored for too long.

While much research has been done on memory loss, the cruelty of Alzheimer’s is the tragic effect it has on the life of the patient, and how it devastates those left to care for a person who no longer knows who they are.

And as society continues to live longer than previous generations, more and more people will be diagnosed and begin the long, lonely demise of Alzheimer’s.

Ingram says it’s time for a rethink on how we deal with Alzheimer’s. Being informed, he says, is a good thing and his goal with his new book is to help people understand the disease.

Ingram will unravel some of the mystery of Alzheimer’s at his UBC Okanagan’s Distinguished Speaker Series appearance in Kelowna on Wednesday, Feb. 25.

Ingram is an iconic Canadian writer and broadcaster, hosting several shows including CBC’s Quirks and Quarks and Discovery Channel Canada’s Daily Planet.

So how do you stay motivated?

There are many reasons why people tend to give up so quickly in the pursuit of fitness but stats have shown that individuals who work out with a partner have a higher probability of reaching their personal fitness goals.

Some of the many benefits of having a workout partner include accountability and encouragement. Unless you happen to be a highly selfmotivated, your chances of sticking to a long-term fitness plan without a partner are much lower.

Think about how working out with a friend or partner can make your workout time go by more quickly. When you’re able to chat with a friend it makes the time fly by and make your exercise time more enjoyable.

Exercise should be fun, and the more fun your workouts are the more you’re going to look forward and be committed to them over the long-term.

Scheduling time together to work out also increases the chance that you will get your workouts done. It’s easy to opt out of a work out because of a busy day or make excuses, but having someone who is counting on you makes it like less likely that you will cancel.

In addition, having a positive partner to work out with can help you to succeed in supporting you and encouraging you in your commitment to achieve your fitness goals.

What should you look for in a good workout partner? First, you need to have compatible schedules.

If your schedules do not coincide it it’s not going to work, plain and simple.

Ideally, you and your workout partner should share similar goals and the same level of commitment to achieving those goals. It’s important to have someone who you can count on, be on time and won’t cave in on days they don’t feel like exercising.

They also need to be able to call you on making excuses and know you will respect their time as well.

What if you don’t have a close friend or significant other to recruit? Consider hiring a personal trainer. Personal trainers can provide structure and accountability, keep you motivated and accountable.

What are the advantages of juicing raw cannabis?

While the downsides of getting high are often debated, the fact is that some people prefer their cannabis without psychoactive effects. This is where juicing comes in handy. Since heat is required to convert the THCA in raw cannabis into THC, its psychoactive form, juicing provides a way of obtaining many of the benefits of cannabis without getting high.

Not getting high makes it easier to take higher doses of cannabis and therefore more of its medical components, also known as cannabinoids. One doctor who recommends juicing is Dr. William Courtney, founder of the Cannabis International Foundation.

According to Dr. Courtney, THC can be taken in doses of hundreds of milligrams when in its acid form. However, once heated, the tolerable dose drops to 10 mg a day. Cannabis juice also contains CBDA, the acid form of CBD. Juicing, like vaporizing, allows you to avoid the negative effects of smoking. Although cannabis smoke has not been linked to lung cancer, it can irritate the airways and lead to minor respiratory symptoms such as chronic bronchitis. Thus, juicing may even help you breathe a bit easier.

While cannabis is often seen as a treatment for chronic diseases, incorporating cannabis into your diet can be a great way to maintain health and prevent disease. Cannabinoids have been shown to possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties, making them a powerful dietary supplement.

Loss of an uncle who will truly be missed Interesting how waking up on a Monday morning earlier this month to the snowfall was a bit of a “now I have to go out and shovel” moment while a call from my daughter let me know my granddaughter Ellie was having the time of her life.

I remember Master Dan Zaleski explaining in one of our mat chats at Quest Academy how we can see things two different ways.

It’s generally the kids that will see the positive in things such as snow and deep mud puddles where as we adults try and avoid them both.

So if we wake up to snow on another morning before this winter ends, go out and make a snow fort—just for fun.

From a gardening perspective, snow is the best thing that can happen in the Okanagan, as it provides a wonderful insulation for our plants from freezing temperatures and that much needed moisture for our arid climate.

The more snow we get, especially up in From The the hills, the more Ground Up water we will have in reserve come spring and summer.

DON BURNETT ••• Our family,and indeed much of the community, are remembering a fine gentleman this month with the passing of Harold Henderson.

I was shocked to hear of this news. Uncle Harold, my mom’s younger brother, moved to Kelowna with his family in 1937 at the age of 17.

Leigh and Helen Henderson with their children Evelyn, Harold and Kay left Calgary to begin a new life in Kelowna while their oldest, Leigh Jr. stayed back while working with a dental equipment company.

Even though I had a relationship second to none with my own father and still consider him my hero, my Uncle Harold gave me support in other ways and I admired him so much for that.

Quiet yet fun loving, calm yet assertive and wise beyond measure; he helped me over the years to accomplish many of my goals.

My heartfelt condolences go to Bruce and Peg, Maureen and Mel and all Harold’s family and his close circle of friends and colleagues. In particular my thoughts are with my dear Aunty Kay McLeod who lost a wonderful brother.

The past 12 months has seen a lot of positives in both real estate sales and mortgage interest rates.

In real estate, there has been a balanced market. Sales have been higher than in 2013 and inventories showed a marked decline in single family dwellings, strata condominiums, townhomes and bare land lots.

On top of that, prices have increased in most sectors with new home construction also on an upswing.

Some stats comparing 2014 to 2013: • Residential sales—up 7.73% • Condo sales—up 3.20% • Lot sales—up 4.64% • Residential listings down by 136. Indicates inventory is being bought up • Units sold—up 52.

The average house price as at December 2014 is $475,799.

B.C. Assessment notices are out and we have seen price increases generally from 0 to 10 per cent. Assessments reflected the value of a property as at July 1, 2014.

Mortgage interest rates remained at historical lows for the year. With rates being so low, it has allowed more people to get into the real estate market.

Also, there are opportunities to do those renovations that have been put on hold. Those looking to consolidate their vehicle loans, credit cards and lines of credit allows the reduction in monthly payments.

Looking at the year ahead, there are many variables that can affect both home values and where interest rates are headed.

We are all affected by what happens in Canada—price of the barrel of oil and how long the low prices will last; how our Canadian economy is advancing.

Two Eagles We are also affected by the economic performance in the Golf Course United States and globally.

All indications, to date, show the year ahead to be a balanced real estate market with increases in property values.

We all look, with great anticipation, to seeing what will happen to our real estate market if there is a continuance of low oil prices.

As for interest rates, it is difficult to predict what will happen.

Whether there will be an increase or remain the same will hinge on what direction the Bank of Canada decides to go as the year unfolds. Will our economy grow? Will inflation kick in?

As it stands today, those looking to purchase or build a home, do renovations, consolidate or take equity out for larger purchases or investments have the availability to choose very low interest rates with excellent terms and conditions.

It will be an interesting year ahead.

Uncle Harold’s obituary further describes his many accolades and awards he so rightfully received over the years but I personally want to say the following about my favourite uncle.

He humbly took on the role of family patriarch helping his extended family whenever he was needed.

As the executive turkey carver at our many Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners at Grandma Henderson’s, I could see he was take charge person and I used to watch his technique with awe.

He took time to make sure all the cousins were included in the seasonal home movies and he made us feel welcome at his family cabin at Green Bay. So many great memories were made back then. Over the years I welcomed and was inspired by his counsel.

Of Prime Interest: Watching the interest rates

My grandfather Henderson was a dental mechanic and Harold became a dentist as did his son Bruce who still practices in Kelowna.

So with a dad that made dentures, a brother that sold dentistry tools and a son that followed in his footsteps as a doctor of dentistry, Harold really made an impact on our community when it came to dental health.

Gary Payne has spent the past five years initiating programs to help teach life skills to children in London, England.

Now he wants to adapt the same principles behind his successful initiative in his native homeland to the Okanagan.

Payne has been meeting with school officials and others involved with youth programs to gauge local interest in his philosophy behind teaching young people to grow up safe, confident and be successful in life.

“As a senior trainer and mentor for more than 20 years with police and military personnel, young people and teachers, I have a wealth of experience in providing a number of training solutions,” Payne said.

“My Life Skills AntiBullying seminar has been successfully delivered to more than 12,000 young people with amazing results. I have run more than 80 behaviour mentoring boot camps and numerous family engagement seminars through my charity.”

Payne started out in 2009 by developing the Life Skills for Children course which was created to address some of the youth-related issues that affected communities in

Payne was in the British Army and had the military’s support to start the program.

“What started out as a project for two weeks ended up taking three years,” Payne said.

His program was initially intended to address poor discipline, anti-social behaviour, low confidence, anger management, personal safety, anti-bullying and communication skill improvement techiques.

Payne said some 5,000 young people from a variety of locations participated in his pilot program, which garnered considerable positive

feedback.

That feedback evolved into corporate and private sponsorship to create a new charity, Young People Are Our Future, and a permanent location from which to continue the life skills initiative and expand its diversity of programs.

Those programs range from seniors’ mentoring and skills workshops to personal presentation and communication skills.

“While we provide services for vulnerable young people and their families, I believe that all young people regardless of their financial, social or religious background, should have access to some practical and

effective core life skills to provide them with the chance to become the best they can be,” Payne said.

Payne has been in Kelowna for several weeks networking with residents. He has hosted some information sessions to see if there is an interest to establish a local model for his programs now being offered in the UK. The Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs have joined the provincial and national movement to share the Pink Shirt Day message—Stand Up Against Bullying, on Feb. 25.

Pink Shirt Day originates from Nova Scotia where two young men stood up to bullying in their high school. A new student was being bullied and was harassed even more when he showed up at school wearing a pink T-shirt.

In support, these two young men went to a discount store and purchased 50 pink T-shirts. They enlisted fellow students to wear the pink shirts at school to support the new student who was being bullied.

Pink Shirt Day was launched from this powerful act of solidarity

and it has made its way across Canada.

This initiative has been a huge success.

In Vancouver, the 2008 call to make a statement against bullying by wearing pink met an overwhelming response from schools, unions, nonprofit groups, employers and politicians.

Thousands of people wore pink as they made their way to school or their workplace.

Today more than 60,000 shirts will be sold through pinkshirtday.ca.

The local London Drugs stores support the efforts of organizations like Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs in providing a safe, secure place where children, youth and their families feel they belong.

This year the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs are also introducing a new

event. The inaugural Pink Shirt Day Breakfast Fundraiser, presented by Krafty Kitchen + Bar, will feature guest speaker Alvin Law who will share his message about bullying and rising above adversity.

Come for breakfast on Feb. 25 from 7:309:30 a.m. at the Laurel Packinghouse, and remember to wear your pink shirt. Tickets must be purchased in advance; $30 per person and $250 for a table of 10.

Team bungled handling of jerseys being tossed on the ice Only in Canada, you say? Where else but the supposed ‘centre’ of the hockey universe could it be against the law to quit being a die-hard Leaf fan?

Heck I quit as a teenager. I never knew it was a life sentence.

During a 4-1 home loss to the lowly Carolina Hurricanes last Monday night, three different (indifferent?) Toronto Maple Leaf fans (former?) tossed their team jerseys onto the ice in frustration.

Seemed the team’s 13 of 16 home game losses were more than the hattrick of hockey hot heads could handle.

It was also the team’s fifth consecutive defeat

Hodge Podge CHARLIE HODGE and 10th in the past 13 games.

The sweater tossing incidents were not connected other than by a shared displeasure at the Maple Leafs’ on-ice performance.

All three fans were escorted out of Air Canada Centre by Toronto Police and later charged with a noncriminal provincial offence of engaging in a prohibited activity.

In addition, police say all three “trespassed at the ACC and are banned for a year from all Maple Leafs MLSE properties.”

The whole incident has been tagged ‘Jersey gate’ and is drawing mixed reactions.

While most fans agree that tossing anything on the ice is a taboo in regards to a safety factor—a huge bright blue hockey jersey is hard to hide on a brightly lit ice surface.

Even if most Maple Leaf players have seemed invisible lately it does not mean a rumpled sweater

on the ice is.

As common as a prone, unmoving Leaf jersey may be to many fans, there is no history of an injury involving one.

In fact, as many players on other NHL clubs will attest no one has been hurt by a Leaf jersey in years. It’s fully understandable to see sport facilities evict and possibly charge fans foolish enough to throw pucks, containers, coins or other potentially harmful items on to a playing surface.

Those days of stupidity are largely done. A fluffy sweater hardly seems in the same category as a can of beer or puck from the 30th row.

Oddly enough team owners have no problems when happy fans toss their paid for expensive hats on the ice following a hat-trick, but God

forbid you doff and toss your $200 jersey in protest.

I’m confident the three fans involved were regular ticket holders caught up in a stupid moment of sports passion.

The Leafs and Air Canada Centre have likely now lost all three (and many others) as supporters because of how the incident was handled.

The Maple Leaf franchise has a long history of major failure in the public relations department with fans, media and players alike.

Some former fans mockingly suggest it should be against the law to put on a Leaf uniform—not to take one off. Their attitude is that impersonating a real hockey player in Toronto should be prohibited— not being a fantasy fan

hoping for a winning club. I am not that harsh, though I no longer wear my Leaf sweater in public (it hangs on the basement wall) and it’s illegal to wear a Montreal Canadiens’ sweater in my house.

There was a time when I adored the Leafs. Like many other Canadian kids I grew up dreaming of being like Tim Horton or Davey Keon.

Giving up on the Leafs was not easy, even as a young lad. It sort of gnaws away at my hockey guilt to this day.

However, like most Leaf fans sometimes enough is too much and sooner or later you have to say goodbye.

I was already really mad at Conn Smythe, Punch Imlach and the rest of the old miserable men that ran the club for how they treated Keon.

However, it wasn’t until May 1967 that I tossed in my Maple Leaf patch —just a few weeks after the club won the Stanley Cup. The snapping point was when they shipped my childhood hero Eddy Shack to Boston for Murray Oliver and a whack of cash.

I had amazingly spent my 11th birthday spellbindingly having a hamburger with Mr. Clear the Track one year before the trade and followed his every move from that birthday event on.

To a 12-year old Leaf fan, trading Eddy to the Bruins was like being sentenced to the dog house for life with your sister.

At the time, the Bruins were at the bottom of the heap so it was from the top of the pack to the bottom in one swoop.

I decided, however, to remain loyal to Eddy and took my hockey heart to Boston with him.

Fortunately a kid named Orr came along that year and the Bruins had a much brighter future in no time.

The Leafs never won another Stanley Cup. Some say they have never really come close, and the current team infected with pompous players such as Phil Kessel seems to be unable to compete with any continuity.

Frustrated fans in Toronto have being showing their displeasure in many ways over the years; yet spend millions of dollars on memorabilia.

Few folks other than true hockey fans buy expensive jerseys and even fewer get so upset as to then toss them away. Smart management would suggest instead bullying such diehard fans a different approach may have garnered better overall results.

Now that its headline news that taking off a Maple Leaf jersey and tossing it on the ice is illegal I am awaiting to see the response. The mind whirls.

The best scenario will be if one fan appeals the ticket. They could file a ‘not guilty’ retort based on temporary insanity due to the club’s abysmal display. “It wasn’t my fault your honour. It drove me nuts watching them play.”

Stephens hits stride with Rockets Warren Henderson Twenty-two teams, including the Kelowna Rockets, passed over Devante Stephens in the 2012 edition of Western Hockey League’s bantam draft.

However, later that year, director of player personnel Lorne Frey was intrigued enough to add the young defenceman from Semiamhoo to the Rockets’ player list.

Two-thirds of the way through the 201415 season Frey and the Rockets clearly have no regrets, as Stephens has emerged as one of the club’s most promising, young blue liners.

Last week, the 6-foot1, 165-pound rearguard was ranked 108th among North American skaters

by Central Scouting, in advance of this summer’s NHL entry draft.

Clearly, Stephens’ game has come a long way since his less refined days as a bantam in Semiamhoo.

Seldom have I seen an individual improve that much, he’s certainly one of the best skaters on our team.

“He’ll get bigger and

stronger, his whole game will improve. It’s been a very fortunate situation for us.”

On the way to evolving into a bonafide major junior defenceman, Stephens overcame some adversity when he broke his leg in December 2013.

He missed most of last season with the

B.C. Major Midget League’s Valley West Hawks and with it went one of the most crucial developmental years of a player’s career.

Still, Stephens wasn’t about to let one unwelcome turn of events sideline his goal of playing for the Kelowna Rockets.

“I trained really hard

in the off-season, on and off the ice, harder than anyone else because I knew I had to,” said Stephens, who turned 18 on Jan. 2. “When I came to camp, I could tell I wasn’t quite at the level I needed to be, but the progression was good, the leg just felt better and better, and now I’m feeling comfortable, and happy to getting lots of ice time.”

Stephens contends he’s always been a decent skater—it’s simply being exposed to the WHL game on a daily basis that’s allowed him to be more efficient and better accustomed to the pace of the game.

Stephens’ uncommon speed on a pair of blades became evident to assistant Kris Mallette very early in the season.

“During a back checking drill Devante got caught up the ice and actually passed Madison Bowey coming back,” said Mallette.

“Dan (Lambert) and I just looked at each other…his skating is second to none.

“He’s blocking shots, he’s doing other good things that have forced us

to play him a lot,” added Mallette. “He still needs to learn, but he’s coming along very nicely.”

With Madison Bowey and Josh Morrissey away at world juniors, Mitchell Wheaton injured and Jesse Lees traded, Stephens saw his ice time ramped up dramatically in December.

So did youngsters Joe Gatenby and Lucas Johansen, both of whom Mallette also praised for their poise and steady work on the Rockets’ blue line.

Stephens now takes a regular shift with Bowey and often plays 20-plus minutes per game, not bad for a guy who wasn’t really on the radar two years ago.

As for his recent acknowledgement from Central Scouting, Stephens is honoured but is doing his best not to allow the attention be a distraction.

“I was just shocked really, I never expected such a thing, being undrafted, it was an honour to have it happen,” added Stephens. “But I just have to focus and continue

playing game by game.

“I’ve put a lot of hard work and effort into getting here,” he said, “but I am grateful the way things have worked out.”

Needless to say, so are the Rockets.

GOULBOURNE HONOURED…

The 21-year-old Edmonton native scored three goals, added four assists and posted a plus5 rating as the Rockets swept a pair of games at home from the Everett Silvertips.

Heat women cling to playoff hopes They’re not done yet.

However, the UBC Okanagan women can’t afford too many more setbacks if the Heat plan on making the Canada West post-season.

Despite a couple of determined efforts, the UBC Heat came up empty-handed in both tries against Fraser Valley over the weekend in Abbotsford.

The two losses push the Heat (4-10) to the edge of playoff elimination in the Explorer

Division.

On Friday, with the Heat trailing by three and vying to tie it up late, Sarah Allison’s trey attempt banged off the rim and stayed out, giving the Cascades a 70-67 victory.

“That was too bad we didn’t grab that one,” said Heat coach Heather Semeniuk.

the team with her second double-double this season as she poured in 17 points and brought down 10

by UFV’s twin towers— Sarah Wierks and Katie Brink—who combined for 49 points, while Wierks added 19 rebounds.

UBC Okanagan will need to win at least five of its last six and get a lot of help from teams around the league to have a shot making at the playoffs.

The UBC Okanagan men put up a fight but couldn’t find a way derail

the runaway Fraser Valley Cascades.

UFV took both games in Abbotsford over the weekend to push their season record to 14-0 and have now won 26 straight.

On Friday, the Heat fell behind by 22 points, then made a game of it before ultimately falling 73-67.

Aldrich Berrios notched a game-high 17 points for UBC Okanagan, while David Manshreck scored 16.

On Saturday, with

Manshreck sidelined by injury, Fraser Valley cruised to a 79-65 victory.

Rookie Buzz Truss led the Heat with a careerbest 18 points and added five rebounds. Mitch Goodwin added 15 as the Heat slip to 2-12 on the season and are all but out of the playoff chase.

The Heat are back in action Friday at home when they host Thompson Rivers.

Warriors push for playoff berth Back to the Oval With points at a premium in the BCHL’s Interior Division, the West Kelowna Warriors’ push for a playoff spot has come down to the final 11 games of the regular season.

Heading into a key weekend doubleheader with Merritt, the Warriors and Centennials are tied for third spot with 50 points each, while Salmon Arm is four points back in fifth spot. The Cents have

three games in hand on West Kelowna, while the Silverbacks have two.

In the end, just four teams will make the postseason, leaving one of these three teams out of the picture.

The Warriors and Cents will square off Friday at Nicola Valley Arena in Merritt, then again Saturday at Royal LePage Place. Face off is 7 p.m.

The Warriors didn’t do themselves any favours

Dani Gruber competed her first time as a Senior woman in double-mini and won gold. She also competed as Junior in trampoline, breaking her own personal record with a routine consisting of 10 different doubles in finals and winning gold.

Emma Tucker finished second behind Dani in trampoline and also won gold in Junior Double Mini. Both girls competed Junior Synchro Trampoline and won gold.

Scott 3rd at B.C. Scotties For Kelly Scott, ambitions of a ninth trip to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts national women’s curling championship will have to wait at least another year.

The Kelowna rink came up short at the 2015 B.C. women’s curling championship in Maple Ridge, falling 7-6 to Sarah Wark of Victoria/Juan de Fuca in Sunday morning’s semifinal.

Scott, Shannon Aleksic, Karla Thompson and Sarah Pyke, were in control of the game much of the way, leading 4-0 after three ends and 6-3 after six.

But Wark chipped away at the

deficit, scoring a deuce in the seventh, then stealing singles in each of the eighth and 10th ends to secure the win.

In the 10th, Scott needed a draw to the four-foot for the victory with her final stone, but was wide and slid too far to give up the steal of one.

It was a challenging week for the newly-formed Scott team which had to qualify out of the C event, then win the first game of the Page playoff over Kristy Lewis on Saturday night.

Scott, a six-time B.C. and twotime Canadian champ, added two

newcomers to her rink this season in Aleksic and Thompson. The two replaced Jeanna Schraeder and Sasha Carter who chose to take the season off to spend more time with their families.

Scott and her rink played in just four events prior to provincials this season, but earned enough points on the World Curling Tour circuit to lock up a berth at the B.C. Scotties.

In Sunday’s final, Prince George’s Patti Knezevic defeated Wark 5-3 in an extra end.

The Knezevic rink will represent B.C. at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts next month in Moose Jaw.

With seven national blind curling championships already on their resume, Dean Martell and his Kelowna team will be seeking another title at the Canadian Visually Impaired Curling Championships, Feb. 1 to 7 in Ottawa.

Kelowna qualified by winning the provincial playdowns in Vancouver last January.

“You basically qualify the previous year so it gives the club enough time to raise the funding to attend the week long bonspiel,” said Kelowna lead and teams spokesperson Bob Comba.”With the support of many local businesses we do a fund raiser every fall at the curling club.

Newcomer to DEKA Trampoline Mariola Garcia Garcia, an exchange student from Mexico, competed in women’s Level 6 Trampoline and won gold. Jordyn Yendley and Cami Hill finished 5th and 6th respectively in the same category. Yendley also competed Level 5 Double-mini and finished

in fourth.

Emily Welsh won gold in Level 5 double mini.

Welsh and Yendley won gold in Novice Synchro Trampoline, while Cami Hill and Mariola Garcia Garcia, won silver.

The provincial level rookies had strong routines, as Madison Eagle won gold in Level 2 Trampoline and bronze in Level 1 Double mini, Taya Lawless finished with gold in Level 1 Trampoline.

Olivia Cortens won bronze in Level 2 14+ Trampoline. Sheyanne Lawrence was 4th in Level 1.

In level 1 Double Mini Brooklyn Walker, Ally Wyllie, finished 6th and 7th.

In men’s Level 1 trampoline Isaac Sowinski finished with a bronze medal and Jonathan Welsh finished 7th.

The veteran provincial athletes also finished

strong. Paige Paynter competed Level 2 Double Mini and came home with a silver, and finished 5th in Level 3 Trampoline.

champions then there is no added pressure “ says Comba. “The curling is more competitive and there will be no easy games.”

The team enters the championship with 65 wins and five losses over the past eight years they attended.

The Kelowna blind curlers practice once a week and participate in the Monday night commercial league at the curling club.

White Cane Week is always the first full week in February with the focus on awareness of not only prevention of vision loss but living with it as well.

Judo club members gain experience around B.C. Members of the Kelowna Judo Club gained some competitive experience over the last month taking part in two tournaments in B.C. In December, the club attended the Revelstoke Randori. The kids were white belts to blue belts and competed against similar size and weight opponents from seven different judo clubs in the Okanagan and Kootenays regions.

This month, the kids were closer to home as Kelowna Judo Club hosted its own local tournament attended by the same seven clubs from around the Okanagan/Kootenays region.

hosted Shiai (tournament) which was well attended by more than 70 kids and smiles were seen all around.

“These local tournaments are so important to these kids”, explains Kelowna Judo Club head coach Kathy Hubble, “because it’s a lot to get down to the Lower Mainland or over to Alberta for a lot of families, and most tournaments don’t even allow white belts to compete. So this gives all kids a chance to fight, learn from some other kids and clubs, and hopefully get a medal.

“It’s very exciting. For a lot of them, it was their first ever tournament.”

November 7, 1963 - January 18, 2015 Passed away after a short 4 month fight with leukemia. She gave it her all but died peacefully surrounded by love. Geet is survived by her mom, Jan Lawrence, her sister-in-law Kelly Lawrence, nephew Tyler and her soul sisters Jo, Leanna, June and Laura. Geet was an impact player, touching the lives of many in her gentle way of being. Many people became finer human beings because of her. She taught unconditional love. Geet loved singing, laughter, camping, bling, red, cats and was a true foodie. Much gratitude goes out to the Hospice House Staff for their kindness and support throughout Geet’s last weeks. There will be a celebration of life for Geet on Saturday, April 4th, 2015 where we will be sending Geet off with panache!

Kathleen Mary Elizabeth Brayshaw passed away peacefully in Calgary, AB., on Sunday, January 25, 2015 at the age of 78 years. Kathleen is survived by her loving husband Don of 62 years. Kathleen was predeceased by her parents Jack and Ethel Curtis; son Garth as well as by five grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Gordon, (Donna), Greg, Susan (Bruce), Diane (Joe), Garnet and estranged son Gary (Nancy). Kathleen is survived by her twenty three grandchildren and twenty eight great grandchildren, as well as her three siblings Bud (Sue), Dick (Connie) and Linda (Pete) and numerous nephews and nieces.

ROBINSON, LAWRENCE (LARRY / GUS) JAMES Born October 10, 1937 in Berwyn, Alberta and passed away on January 24, 2015. Predeceased by his parents Orville and Velma Robinson. Larry was raised in Ocean Falls, B.C. and also met his wife May there. They were high school sweethearts and married on June 28, 1957. They raised 3 children, Dean (Sigi), Rhonda (Gary) and Audrey (Donna) and have 4 grandchildren, Brittany, Zach (Morgan), Amy (Rob) and Gare. They had just celebrated the birth of their first great grandchild, Benjamin. He was also survived by one brother Lloyd (Agnes) Robinson in Abbotsford, BC. Dad was a proud father, father-in-law and grandfather. He supported his children and grandchildren in every endeavour and dream that they had. He was always our number one fan. Larry loved to tell jokes and had an incredible sense of humour. His integrity and strength of character is evident in the amazing number of friends he has left behind. Larry worked in the pulp and paper industry in Ocean Falls, BC, Campbell River, BC, Prince George, BC, Mackenzie, BC, Prince Albert, SK and Whitecourt, AB. He retired from the mills in 2002 and then he and May embarked on another career, owning and operating a taxi business in Whitecourt. In 2007, they moved to Kelowna, where Dad could finally dedicate his full attention to his passion of golf.

Larry’s love of the West Coast of BC never waned; he loved to talk about Ocean Falls, the life-long friendships that were forged there and of course the “fishing tales.”

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Father, Grandfather, brother and friend; Edmond (Ed) Joseph Buchner. Ed was born August 6, 1926 in Macklin Saskatchewan and passed away peacefully in Kelowna on January 23, 2015 at the age of 88.

Predeceased by loving wife Theresa in 1996, son Gerald in 1967,granddaughter Tiffany in 2008; his parents, and many brothers and sisters. Ed is lovingly remembered by his sister: Dorothy Greer (nee Buchner) children: Janice (Jim), Sharon (Michael), Deborah (Robert), Darlene (Vern), Donald (Kelly), grandchildren; Rose, Kyle, Rylee, Shayne, Brent and Devon, great grandchildren, London, Indhica and Rowan.

Ed loved to play sports and he freely shared his laughter, his inviting smile and striking blue eyes. Much of his life was spent volunteering selflessly for the Knights of Columbus and wherever he could be of service. He has gone to be with our Lord and is no longer in pain. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends. Thanks to all the lovely people at the Dorchester for their friendship and care, and the wonderful caring staff at KGH. Visitation for the comfort of family and friends will be held within Valleyview Funeral Home Friday January 30, 2015 from 7~9 PM, 165 Valleyview Road Rutland.

A Mass will be celebrated on Saturday January 31, 2015 at 1:00 PM at St. Theresa’s Catholic Parish 750 Rutland Road N. with Father Cerlouie Jiminez officiating.

CLEMENT, IRIS NORMA Iris Norma Clement suddenly passed away on December 30, 2014 in Yuma, Arizona, USA. Iris will be sadly missed by her loving husband Bruce Clement and her children Tracy (Pam), Wade (Amy), Alana (Ken) and her 11 grandchildren Josh, Shelby, Jayden, Breason, Kyler, Raquel, Savannah, Lucy, Alex, Tyler (Jessica) and Jeremy. Siblings Diane (Bill) Ward, Randy (Shirley) Nagel, as well as her many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends. Iris had a passion for living life to the fullest and loved to laugh. Iris was a loyal friend to many and was quick to help when she saw a need.

Iris had a love for all living things, she was exceptionally fond of her friends in the animal kingdom. Iris will be missed dearly by many as she has touched the lives of so many people. Predeceased by her father Gustav, mother Sofia, husband George, daughter Ingrid and sister Suzanna.

Mom was born Sept. 1, 1936 in Cataloi, Romania.

She immigrated to Canada in 1951 with her mother and sisters. They made their way to Winnipeg, where she met George. They were married in 1952 and raised 3 children in a loving home. Wonderful summers were spent at Lester Beach. Mom’s talents were many, from baking and cooking to handicrafts of every sort; her love of doll collecting was a passion. She was a member of the German Society for many years, managing the bar and restaurant. Her involvement in Folklorama brought her joy.

Mom took immense pride in her home and family, especially her grandchildren. Erna had a special place in her heart for her pets. Retirement brought George and Erna to Peachland where they lived out their final years in their own little paradise. We love you Mom and Oma. Auf wiedersehen. The family would like to express their gratitude for the care Mom received at KGH. A special thanks to staff on 4A.
