The basics of pet food

T

here are a lot of options on the food market for pets.

There’s a wide range in price and food quality, and when it comes down to it, finding the food that’s right for your pet is what’s most important.

Many animals will do well on some of the newer grainfree diets, but most will do just as well on a more traditional formula. You can feed your cat and dog dry food, wet food (canned or raw) or a combination of both. Most people choose dry food simply because it’s convenient and provides all that they need, nutritionally speaking.

Use the feeding guidelines on the bag as a starting point, but

keep in mind that they are only a guideline—your pet may have different nutritional needs, so it’s important to monitor them for weight changes and other health effects.

Some pets will eat continuously if there’s food available. If your pet is like this, try to feed them a limited amount of food at regular intervals. If they prefer to pick at food throughout the day, make sure the portion is controlled. Even if they seem to self-regulate their intake, they shouldn’t have free reign to eat as much as they want because this can lead to obesity, which can cause health problems.

Holistic foods are another recent addition to the line-up of pet foods on the market. These

foods contain fresh, whole foods supplemented with antioxidants, pre- and pro-biotics, and other beneficial ingredients which can promote better overall health.

These foods tend not to include by-products or highly-processed ingredients such as peanut hulls, so they are often nutrient dense and many pets thrive on them.

Grain-free formulas are the latest trend. The theory behind grain-free is that cat and dogs didn’t eat grain in the wild, so they don’t need it in food. In the past, many of the grains added to pet foods have been processed carbohydrates such as wheat, corn and rice flour.

However, these carbohydrates can be difficult for some pets to digest.

Grain-free foods include other sources of carbohydrates, such as sweet potato or peas, which are less likely to cause food sensitivities.

Canned food is another option for getting your pet more protein. Some canned foods are made with up to 95 per cent meat.

Many pets prefer canned food because it’s closer to eating a raw meat diet, as they would in the wild. It’s a little less convenient than dry food, but it helps pets stay hydrated and can be easier to digest for some.

If you choose to feed canned food, make sure your pet’s dental health is monitored. Dry kibble helps to keep pets’ teeth clean because it rubs the teeth as they chew.

Lisa Borovica decided to enter a bodybuilding competition.

I

f your goal is to compete in an athletic competition, a trainer can help you prepare.

A trainer can only push the body so far for results, the rest comes from the right balance of food you must eat to keep the right balance of muscle in your body. Without this commitment the success will be harder to achieve.

Lisa Borovica, 42 and mother of five, decided now is the time to fulfill her own competitive dream.

“History shows that I have drive, determination and desire.

I can take all the knowledge I have learned over the years and take myself to a new and exciting height,” says Borovica.

“I have always wanted to compete in some type of body building competition since I was a teenager. The timing seems right at this stage in my life despite having five young children.”

Borovica has trained and competed toward a pro beach volleyball tour, triathlons, marathons and obstacle course races in the past. Now, just weeks after giving birth to her fifth child in eight years, she is training to compete in a body

building competition in May. “I strive for greatness and love achievement. I thrive having seemingly out-of-reach goals. I want my body to go to extremes, to be pushed harder, faster, stronger than ever, never letting my mind sabotage my desire for greatness,” says Borovica.

“I want my children to be inspired. To know some things in life may seem unachievable,

however, if they believe, everything is within their reach.

You have a dream now; put that dream into action.”

She also hopes to inspire others that not just the fit can go into competition. “Fitness is for all and everyone at any age or stage in their life. You have to dedicate yourself to yourself.”

This journey toward figure competition will not be an easy

one nor just somewhat difficult.

It will be hard work.

“My body will want to quit,” says Borovica. “I know in my mind I cannot quit at any time during training. I have to keep pushing until failure, and then push hard again for more. This is how muscle gains are achieved, along with outstanding clean eating, a complete meal plan for every stage of my training.

“I am doing this with complete guidance from my personal trainer. I love all the aspects of strictness and dedication in this journey. Mind, body and soul all connected all the time.”

Borovica’s personal trainer, Tricia Goebel, says Borovica has what it takes to achieve her goal.

“Thanks to her strong attitude and determination with her proper eating plan, we are now starting to see the results within the first month (of training),” says Goebel. “Lisa and I are driven with the same win-win attitude. I want her to succeed and feel great when she steps on the stage and tells herself , ‘I did it!’”

L

ight emitting diode or LED light therapy is a new trend in helping people keep a healthy body, but its relaxation benefits can also aid with a health mind and spirit.

Light energy can benefit health and vitality through: - Increased blood circulation - Pain relief - Stress reduction - Reduced inflammation - Improved workouts and recovery - Relaxation and more.

What is LED light therapy?

• LED light therapy involves the use of light emitting diodes (LED) which deliver red, blue and infrared light to the skin.

• Each colour of lights have their own unique wavelengths that penetrate into different levels of the body.

• The blue light goes to the soft tissue, red goes to both the soft tissue and muscles, while infrared penetrates through three levels and goes into the soft tissue, muscles and down to the

bone.

How does LED light therapy work?

• It works by the light energy stimulating the release of nitric oxide (found in haemoglobin), which enters the muscle cells through the walls of the blood vessels. This causes the vessels to increase in diameter creating more flow, which in turn increases oxygen and glucose levels.

When this happens more of the old dead cells and waste products are carried away and new cells can be regenerated, thereby refreshing the body.

NASA studies demonstrate cells exposed to led light therapy exhibit a 150 per cent increase in cellular metabolism.

What are treatments like?

• Treatments are non-invasive, and done by placing light pads on bare skin (if possible) for a maximum of 20 minutes on the desired areas.

How will this help my workouts?

• Light therapy applied before resistance exercise can prevent exercise-induced cell damage, reduce fatigue and enhance contraction function.

Light therapy applied after resistance exercise can delay the onset of fatigue, and improve post-exercise recovery of strength and function.

What else should I know?

• Many people with complaints of pain associated with acute neck and back pain, arthritis, restricted movement, inflammation, tendon problems, and tight muscles, have reported positive results using LED light therapy.

Adding the LED light therapy to massage, acupressure or shiatsu will help reduce scar tissue, increase circulation, and decrease pain, all while giving you a deep sense of relaxation.
