Family, friends rally for man stricken with cancer FUNDRAISER: | Gary deVries says faith, family and friends are on his side as he deals with surgery, treatment for brain cancer.

Gary deVries may have moved away from the Alberni Valley for work a few years ago, but his former community has rallied around him at one of the most important times of his life.

DeVries relocated his young family to Kelso, Washington State in 2008 for a job, but has many family members and close friends remaining in

the Alberni Valley.

Life was good—he had a job he liked, was involved in his community and his church, and had just fulfilled a goal of running a half marathon on Dec. 6 when he began to experience headaches.

After almost three weeks of headaches that extra-strength Tylenol and Robaxacet weren’t touching, he went to the hospital. Two days later surgeons

removed a mass from his brain and called it

a regiment of radiation and chemotherapy treatment to get rid of the tiny piece that surgeons couldn’t remove.

DeVries’ sister-inlaw, Cheryl Currie, said the community response in Port Alberni has been unbelievable. “You don’t realize how many people are there for you until you need them. It touches your heart,” she said.

Many comments have been made on social media from deVries’ former slopitch teammates

and friends north of the border.

DeVries’ former church, the Christian Reform Church on Roger Street, formed a prayer circle for him, as did his church in Kelso, some of his co-workers and his sister in Maple Ridge.

DeVries said this faith is carrying him through his recovery.

“It’s unbelievable.

The support of all my friends and family, the overpowering of prayers is absolutely beautiful,” he said.

“I just know God has a plan B for me and

it’s not to be beaten by cancer.”

There are two fundraisers set up to help the deVries family with Gary’s medical expenses: a fund at the bottle depot on Fourth Avenue in Port Alberni, and people may donate their returnables to that fund. Abbeyfield wraps up year with a party and well-known community activist, added the right tone to the event by playing some traditional Christmas songs on her accordion, accompanied by popular local tenor Peter Schroeder, and the always talented singer Marlene Dietrich.

The festive atmosphere was present among the dozens who attended the event. Resident Orize Marcotte, who is always eager to take part at the various events happening in the home, said jokingly: “The music, the food, the drinks, the company, etc.,

were really good. Too bad we didn’t have a dance as well.”

Dietrich, along with other members of the board assisted with the setup and serving and also mingled with the attendees.

lots of volunteers who came to join them for the special celebration,” she added. “All the staff helped and the

Heard added that there were a number of other events the residents took part in

All around the various senior homes in the Alberni Valley the celebration of Christmas and the good-bye to the “good old year” were enjoyed by the residents/tenants in a festive atmosphere.

One of the biggest events took place in Abbeyfield House as the residents, along with board members, got together with employees, family, friends and other volunteers in a wonderful atmosphere, which included music and lots to eat at a preChristmas event.

“It was a wonderful get together with friends and families,” said Bertha Levesque, president of the Abbeyfield Port Alberni Residents Council.

“We have a good bunch of residents, staff and board members, and at an event like this, we all enjoy it very much like a large family would do”, she added.

Later in the program, she welcomed the visitors and thanked the staff and board for making the gettogether possible.

Another resident, Mildred Reynolds, was at hand to make some comments on the event: “My son Terry visited with me this afternoon and together we sang well-known Christmas songs that we used to sing many years ago,” she said. “Great memories!

“At Christmas time and other special celebrations, such as birthdays, my husband and children got together to sing and have a good time.”

A

mother and father are being investigated for neglect after they allowed their six-yearold daughter and 10-year-old son to walk home together from a playground a mile away without adult supervision.

Neighbors called the police and child protection services to report them.

The laws in Maryland, where this happened, prohibit children under the age of eight from being left unattended in a vehicle or a home, and a child must be at least 13 years old to supervise a younger one. Despite this, the educated, professional pair is defending their choice to “freerange parent”—a childrearing style that both my husband and I grew up with, and now our children are growing up with as well.

Yet before reading this story in the news, I had never heard of

the term “free-range parenting” and simply considered our style to be somewhat old school, reminiscent of the days when we played unsupervised outside from morning to night. After learning of an actual label I looked it up.

Described as a commonsense approach to parenting in an overprotective era, it is almost opposite of what’s been termed “helicopter” parenting where children are monitored and sometimes controlled continuously by their folks who hover over them.

I’m not about to claim one style is better than the other. I think what’s best depends on the individual family, and in particular the kids. For us, the old fashioned approach is working out well so far.

Sam and Daisy are confident individuals who for the most part make responsible decisions, are selfreliant and don’t take unnecessary risks.

passed away peacefully at Fir Park Village on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at 93 years of age.

Predeceased by her husband Daniel; sisters: Mary, Annie and Jessie; as well as brothers: Sandy, Robert, Tommy, Archie and Hughie. Catherine is survived by her children: Daniel (Gerry) and Pat Budding (Bert); grandchildren: Bryce (Kristen), Kevin (Jen), Gordon (Tracey) and Kathy (Sean); great grandchildren: Samantha, Breanna, Braydon, Taylor, Jared, Alex, Ryan and step great grandchildren: Jonah and Brodie; sister Violet, brother William, sister-in-law Betty Connell, many nieces and nephews as well as her special friend Jen. Catherine grew up in Scotland and later moved to Port Alberni with her husband and her children. She truly loved life. She always had a smile on her face, had a great sense of humour, was eternally optimistic and saw life as a wonderful adventure full of laughter and surprises. Her attitude was infectious and she couldn’t help but brighten the days of those around her. Her passing will leave a void in the lives of those she touched.

The family would like to thank the staff of Abbeyfield and Fir Park for the loving care provided to Cathie. She was treated and made to feel like family and for that we thank you.

Cathie loved life and loved to laugh and in light of this her life will be celebrated on Friday, February 6, 2015 from 1:00 – 5:00 at the Cherry Creek Hall. Cremation has taken place. Stories and remembrances may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.chapelofmemories.ca.

Lenore Skenazy, the author of Free-Range Kids, states that our society started believing children were in constant danger “after cable TV started showing abductions 24/7 and finding the weirdest, saddest stories from around the world.”

The internet prominently highlights a steady stream of that as well.

It’s not just the fear of crime that scares us though. All the extra safety concerns we’re bombarded with make us worry as well.

The current tobogganing restrictions and bans making news across North America illustrates this. No one can deny there is a physical

risk and liability issue when sledding, but risk exists with just about any activity.

As parents, my husband and I could still be considered too protective compared to previous generations. We thoroughly child proofed our house, put gates on the stairs and even walked up the ladder of the slide with our kids and caught them at the bottom when they first slid down.

But we also taught them what they shouldn’t touch, how to navigate stairs and the safety rules at the playground.

The older they got the more independence they wanted, so we helped them earn it.

None of us want our kids to experience any harm, but I believe overprotecting them and perpetuating this feeling of living in fear could hurt them more in the end.

Teaching them responsibility and assisting in becoming selfsufficient is not neglect, it’s a rational parenting decision.

“I can’t believe you’d let them take public transit without you,” one of my friends said recently. “A man was just stabbed to death on a city bus you know.”

Yes, I do know. The tragic murder she referred to occurred in Kelowna two and a half months ago and was a shock to our community. But what were we supposed to do?

Take away the independence our 11-year-old daughter and 14-year-old son have earned because of the remote possibility someone might attack them?

As we’ve also seen in the news, horrifying things can happen anywhere—even in their protective schools with teachers present.

This world we live in isn’t 100 per cent safe like the vast majority of us wish it was.

But is it worse than it used to be? From all the reports and statistics I’ve read over the years, when it comes to Canada and the US it is not. It only seems like it is.

According to the Department of Justice the crime level has
