By Tom Fletcher Premier Christy Clark says the sudden drop in oil and gas prices might delay her government’s push for liquefied natural gas exports, but she is sticking to her latest prediction of three LNG export facilities in B.C. by 2020.

In a speech to the annual Truck Loggers’ Association convention in Victoria Thursday, Clark put a brave face on the global skid in energy markets and emphasized the need for more forestry workers. As she did the previous day at a natural resources forum in Prince George, Clark mentioned her govern-

ment’s tentative plan to place ads at Fort McMurray airport urging B.C. workers to “come home” for job openings expected here as oil sands operations slow down.

Retirements and a recovery in the U.S. housing market will open up thousands of jobs in the forest industry, which will compete with LNG developments for equipment operators and other skilled workers, Clark told logging company executives.

Optimism for LNG is harder to find in the current world market, with some analysts saying U.S. gas exports are not competitive based on current price forecasts

and competition from cheap oil.

A surge of new shale gas supply from the U.S. and other countries was already driving down LNG prices before crude oil dropped below $50 a barrel in recent weeks.

The price drop prompted the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors to downgrade its 2015 forecast for rig activity by 36 per cent this week. The association was forecasting nearly 11,000 oil and gas wells to be completed in Western Canada this year, but has cut that to 6,600 because of the price drop.

The Province is raising camping fees as of March 15, 2015.

This increase comes after years of investment delivering capital projects aimed at attracting young families, offering new recreation opportunities and increasing attendance in provincial parks. Over the past five years, BC Parks has invested approximately $60 million in park facilities, and has approximately $700 million of investment in infrastructure that requires maintenance.

Fee increases are

nominal to ensure camping remains affordable for families and visitors enjoying B.C.’s world class parks system - one of the largest protected areas systems in the world.

While the fee schedule varies, the vast majority of provincial campsites will see a $2 per night increase, while others will see slightly larger increase in price, to a maximum of $5 per night. The last system-wide increase was in 2010.

There are no increases to fees for sani-stations, mooring buoys, backcountry camping, picnic shelters, or group camping.

Parking remains free in all provincial parks.

COTR signs Crime and Correction program agreement with VIU

College of the Rockies has signed a block transfer agreement with Vancouver Island University which allows students who complete the College’s one-year Crime and Correction certificate program to enter year two of VIU’s Criminology diploma program.

dren’s first and most important teachers and so they need the support and resources to help them to be the best teachers they can. Parents of very young children encourage literacy through singing, speaking and playing with their children. Rhymes, stories, crafts – all provide everyday learning opportunities. Speaking to your child encourages him to talk and develop language skills. Exposure to more than one language increases the child’s ability to develop verbal and cognitive skills.

Opinion: Wolf cull a tragic option

by Brian Coombs There are plenty of man-made tragedies confronting the planet today. Here, in the Kootenays, and in other areas in the province, another one is going to happen— the culling of wolf packs via sharpshooters in helicopters to help protect the dwindling caribou herds.

Tragic as this is, there is no easy answer here.

Local, national and even international groups have fought for years to protect caribou habitat and have seen some success. Working with environmental groups, private companies and recreational organizations, the province’s Mountain Caribou Recovery Implementation Plan, drafted in 2006, protected 5 million acres from logging and road building, plus another 3 million from motorized winter recreation.

And it is generally accepted that much of the reason for the caribou decline has been decreased habitat. This habitat loss came from roads and other development being placed in the high backcountry for commercial purposes. The Mountain Caribou are a reclusive species and can’t stand losing traditional foraging grounds.

Of course, there are also problems with increased recreational use of the high country. Then there is predation. There

are plenty of wolves out there and they have acquired a taste for caribou.

Years ago, in more northerly climes in the province, I was allowed to take a tour with a conservation officer into the mountains at the end of winter. We took snowmobiles and stopped at a high alpine meadow that was buried under about a metre of snow. The field was covered in snowmobile tracks, some recent, others old and icy and in the middle we found an area of bloodied snow and the remains (few as they were) of what the officer deemed to be a caribou. He explained that a defensive strategy of the caribou in winter when threatened by wolves was to head to an open meadow. The deep snow would deter the wolves and allow the animal a better chance to escape. He then noted that all the snowmobile tracks on the meadow acted like highways for the wolves, rendering this defensive strategy useless. He added that even the sound of snowmobiles, or in some cases helicopters, will cause a herd to run, using up precious energy they need to survive the winter months.

Regardless of what has been done in the past and what is continuing, we find ourselves at a critical juncture. Even John Bergenske, conservation director for Wildsight,

said in a release that “We share the public sentiment against wolf kills.

But we recognize that in some rare cases it may be necessary to keep a globally unique animal like mountain caribou on the landscape and, in so doing maintain its protected habitats,” going on to say, “It’s a short term, desperate strategy to grow herds and heal degraded habitat to the point where predation is less of an issue. Clearly, there will be intense pressure to reopen those habitats to logging, road building and motorized recreation if the caribou disappear – habitat that is critical to thousands of other plants and animals.”

This is not a purely local problem. Species are disappearing around the planet at an alarming rate due mainly to our ever-increasing human population.

Without coming up with a radically new way of doing things, that trend is not likely to change.

So we are in a damned if we do, damned if we don’t scenario. The Mountain Caribou herds need protecting, but to do so the plan is to destroy large numbers of an animal that lives in close family groups, is incredibly smart and as majestic and iconic as any animal on the planet.

The cull will happen.

The protection it extends to the Mountain Caribou has yet to be seen. This is a tragedy of epic proportions. We can only hope that it works—and that we learn from it.

Letter: An update on Interior Health It is with great enthusiasm that I step into my new role as Interior Health Board Chair. In the spirit of new beginnings, I want to provide some highlights from the past year and an update moving forward.

Last year saw many milestones, not the least of which was within our cardiac surgery program. Although based in Kelowna, it serves the entire region, allowing people to receive surgery closer to home rather than travelling to the Lower Mainland.

In November, the program marked completion of its 1,000th open heart surgery. More than 1,000 surgeries and the outcomes have been excellent. The team has really raised the bar and has already been receiving awards.

Building on our successful surgical program, the new Interior

Heart & Surgical Centre (IHSC) currently under construction in Kelowna will benefit patients across Interior Health by providing the highest level of medical care ever seen in the Interior, through an integrated critical care facility supported by a full range of clinical supports. The IHSC opens to patients in September 2015.

In Cranbrook, the $20 million redevelopment at East Kootenay Regional Hospital continues to move forward, including a new, expanded Intensive Care Unit and a significant electrical upgrade for the site.

As in other places in the world, particularly rural areas, recruitment for physicians and expert staff remains a challenge. To further support our communities in ongoing recruitment efforts, Interior Health recently created

the Guide to Successful Long-term Physician Recruitment and Retention. This guide is now available on the Better Here physician recruitment website and is a great resource to support family physician and specialist recruitment.

Looking forward, we can expect to see an even greater focus on health promotion, primary care, integrated community care and chronic disease management to further decrease demand on hospital and residential services. There has been great collaboration occurring between hospitals, family doctors in local Divisions of Family Practice, and community programs.

We continue to promote improved public health as that keeps people home where they want to be and helps relieve pressure on hospitals.

We are also embracing new approaches to care. For example, last year we launched a new surveillance nurse program, where nurses

check in and monitor low risk clients via regular phone calls. Interior Health has and will continue to be at the forefront of using technology to meet patient needs.

The use of telehealth has grown to include more than 20 different medical fields, with nearly 55,000 patient uses per year throughout Interior Health.

In closing I’d like to recognize the incredible people that make up Interior Health. We have 1,500 physicians, 19,500 staff and over 4,800 volunteers, each one dedicated to doing all they can to contribute to the provision of quality care. Health care is fascinating and complex. It touches each of us at one time or another, often while we are at our most vulnerable time. I am very proud to do my part in helping guide the organization as we meet new challenges and celebrate our successes. ~Erwin Malzer, Interior Health Board Chair.

This February, seven of the top chefs in Cranbrook and Kimberley will compete Iron-chef style in the first-ever Kootenay Granite Stone Soup Challenge.

In head-to-head rounds, chefs will put their culinary creativity to the test in the soup kitchen at the Salvation Army in Cranbrook, each preparing a daily soup using only the donated ingredients on hand. They will serve

lunch to Salvation Army clients, who will vote on their favourite soup.

The winner will move on to the next round.

The two chef finalists will face-off at an exciting luncheon fundraiser on March 4, noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort.

The Kootenay Granite Stone Soup Challenge is based on a well-known fable, where a starving stranger arrives in a village and starts a “soup” by boiling a stone. When all is said and done, each villager has made a small contribution to the soup, and everyone is fed. This is what happens every day at the Salvation Army.

Soup is a big part of the 12,000 meals they serve annually.

Managing a Fever

Last week our daughter suddenly woke in the middle of the night with a fever of 39.5 C (103 F), hot dry skin, crying and saying that her forehead hurt. I had that sinking feeling so familiar to parents who suspect they may not get much more sleep that night. Because the fever seemed to come on suddenly, out of the blue, I gave her a single dose of homeopathic Aconite. Aconite is indicated for high fevers that come on suddenly especially when associated with anxiety or exposure to cold (we had been out tobogganing that evening). After 15 minutes I gave homeopathic Belladonna which is indicated for high fevers where there is hot dry skin, rosy cheeks and often headache. 10 minutes later she was asleep and we all slept the rest of the night. Throughout the next day she rested and slept on the couch hot and tired with a fever that rose and fell and we used Belladonna several more times which helped keep her comfortable.

Fevers raise the body temperature so the immune cells can function more efficiently.

Higher body temperatures also reduce the vitality of viruses and bacteria, making it easier for the immune system to kill them. Fevers are the body's friend and should be supported, not suppressed, so the body can fight the infection effectively.

Homeopathy is a natural

therapy that can be used safely at home to help with a variety of acute health issues.

For fevers, homeopathy is used to support the body's immune system, make the fever more comfortable, shorten the duration of the illness and prevent recurrences. Two days after the onset of her fever, our daughter was still sick but no longer had a headache. She became super sweet, polite, teary and very clingy. This state indicated the homeopathic remedy Pulsatilla which we used for the duration of her illness (we knew she was better when she woke her normal fiery, intemperate self).

There are other important remedies for fever. If you or your child are very tired, hardly able to keep your eyes open, with shaky legs and body pains consider Gelsemium. Bryonia is used where body aches predominate and the sick person may have a headache, cough and just wants to lay still and quiet. When a child is really cranky, mad and inconsolable unless carried think about Chamomilla. Not all fevers should be allowed to run their course. Seek help when a fever occurs with severe headaches or stiff neck, when the fever is above 37.4 C in a child younger than three months or when the fever stays higher than 39.4 C for more than 6 hours in a child 3 months to 3 years of age.

Pepsi Ice Kids Club Parents, kids and the ICE spent the day whipping down the hill on tobogans recently and while there were a few spills, there were a lot more thrills.

The Pepsi Kootenay Ice Kids Club is for children aged five to 12 and members receive an official membership card, gift and punch card enabling them to attend up to eight Ice home games for only $5 per game.

Besides toboganing, members also get a chance to skate with the team and catch a movie during the season.

OBITUARY Walter Elmer Nightingale 1937 - 2015 It is with deep sorrow that the family of Walter Nightingale announces his passing on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 in Cranbrook.

Walter was born on November 21, 1937 in Okla, Saskatchewan.

Walter and his family lived in Cranbrook and ran a successful trucking business for 23 years. He retired in 1993. In March 2012 Walter moved into Joseph Creek Village.

Walter is predeceased by his daughter Janice, his eldest sister Bessie Child, his sister Ethel Cook, his brothers Dennis (Peg), Dick (Dianne) and Larry (Ernestine) and his parents. He leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife of 56 years Anne, his son Clinton (Gloria), grandson Michael (Carole) and their son Jo-Jack, his sisters Iris (Bill), June (Cliff), Nancy (Bob) and Barb.

Walter will remembered by his many friends and relatives.

He will be missed by all who knew him.

There will be no funeral at Walter's request. He will be interred in the spring of 2015.

OBITUARY

Donna Maria Kennelly 1945 - 2015 Donna Kennelly passed away peacefully on the evening of Monday, January 19, 2015 in Cranbrook at 69 years of age. She fought a courageous battle with COPD which took her from us. Our prayers are with her as she joins her husband and sole mate Pat in their next journey.

Donna was born on August 31, 1945 in Cranbrook. She leaves to mourn her passing her sons Richard (Allison) Kennelly and their children Parker and Sarah; and Wayne (Sherry) Kennelly and their children Dynell (JJ) and Anthony (Chantal); her daughter Kathy Durham (Greg) and their children Austin and Jackson; great grandchildren Nathon and Lexus Kennelly, sister Dolores Harris and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by Pat Kennelly her husband of 47 years; her parents Michael and Adelia Bornowsky and her brother Fred Bornowsky.

A memorial service for Donna was held at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers. donations in honour of Donna can be made to East Kootenay Regional Hospital, c/o Respiratory Therapy, 13 – 24th Avenue North, Cranbrook, British Columbia, V1C 3H9 or the: Canadian Cancer Society, 19 - 9th Avenue South, Cranbrook, British Columbia, V1C 2L9.

Kjell Erik Sorensen February 24th 1980 – January 6th 2015 It is with profound sadness the family of Kjell Erik Sorensen announces his passing on Tuesday January 6th in Castlegar BC. Erik is survived by the love of his life; Jaclyn and his daughter Liberty (6) and son Liam (2). Mother Renate Sorensen (WycliffeKimberley); Grandma, Lydia Moehling (Marysville); Sister, Maibrit Sorensen and Brother-in-Law Cody Stewart (Nelson). Erik was predeceased by his father; Kjell Sorensen in September 2014 and Grandfather Wilhelm Moehling December 2010.

Extended family include The LaRiviere’s in Quesnel; Aunt Angela, Uncle Chuck and Cousins Laurel and Rachelle.

Aunt Randi in Gran Canary Island; and family in Germany and Norway.

Erik was born February 24th 1980 in Cranbrook BC and grew up in Wycliffe in the house his mother still resides in, spending the summers on the trampoline, swimming in the pool; building forts and riding bikes. In the winter Erik and Maibrit were at the Kimberley ski hill every day they weren’t in school –guaranteed the first on the ski hill in the morning and last to leave. Both conquered the ‘Easter’ run before they were 10 years old. Erik attended Marysville Elementary and McKim Middle School before transferring to Cranbrook for high school.

Erik followed in his father’s footsteps and joined Union 115 in 2005. With the same name as his father; many co-workers had worked with his Father and lots of stories ensued; with many co-worker friends coming to visit his Father to catch up on ‘old times’. He moved around BC working and gaining the experience necessary to become the Plant Manager of SPL in Castlegar for the last 3 years. Erik worked hard like his father and made many dear friends at SPL.

Erik met Jaclyn while in high school in Cranbrook; and low and behold Jaclyn’s parents moved beside Renate and Kjell 10 years ago. It is at this time that the high school sweethearts rekindled their relationship. In 2008 Jaclyn and Erik welcomed his princess; Liberty Rayne Maibrit Sorensen to the family; and proceeded to move to Nelson . In 2010 Erik, Jaclyn and Liberty moved to Castlegar and on Valentine’s Day 2012 welcomed his prince; Kjell Liam Arik Sorensen.

August 30th 2014 Erik and Jaclyn were married at the family home in Wycliffe; and officially expanded the family to include Mother -in-Law Trish Birks-Burch and Father-in-Law Brian Burch. Sister-in-laws Monica, Lindsay, and Brother-in-law Everett. Along with the new extended family includes 2 nephews and 4 nieces.

All who remember Erik will recall his love of music and his passion to travel to take in all of his favorites. When Erik was only 14 his sister and brother-in-law took Erik to Seattle to see DOA, Sublime and The Ramones. Erik was such a concert fan he purchased tickets for his mom so she could take him to see White Zombie in Spokane (mom went and was terrified). One of his prized possessions is a picture of Joey Keithley with Liberty; and favorite recent shows is the Dropkick Murphy road trip and The Smalls. At every show small or large he would be front and center in any mosh pit.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday January 31st at the Eagle’s Hall in Cranbrook at 1:30pm.
