Shaping up to be a rocky year for British Columbia mining

He said in an interview last week the price of copper has dipped to a level where there is concern about layoffs at metal mines, but the current “bear market” is less of a concern for mineral exploration, with mineral discoveries taking years to develop.

Taseko Mines confirmed Monday it is reducing its workforce at the Gibraltar Mine near Williams Lake by nearly 50 positions due to the price of copper.

Premier Christy Clark’s jobs plan set a target of eight new mines and nine expansions by the end of 2015. Since 2011, startups include Copper Mountain near Princeton, New Afton near Kamloops, Mount Milligan west of Prince George, Bonanza Ledge near Quesnel and Yellow Giant on Banks Island near Prince Rupert.

Last week Environment Minister Mary Polak issued two five-year mine permit extensions to keep alive projects facing opposition from local aboriginal communities.

One was for the Tulsequah Chief mine project near Atlin, determined to have been “substantially started” with site work after a long legal battle with the Taku River Tlingit First Nation.

The other extension is for the Taseko’s New Prosperity copper-gold project near Williams Lake, which has twice been rejected by the federal government due to environmental concerns over acid rock contamination.

The Tsilhqot’in Nation remains adamantly opposed to the open-pit proposal.

Bennett said both companies and the government need to continue talks about revenue sharing and impacts with affected aboriginal communities as they apply for operating permits.

“An important part of that process under the Mines Act is for them to engage with First Nations, and an important part for the Crown is to consult and accommodate, so there’s lots of work to do,” Bennett said.

The Cranbrook Salvation Army’s Soup Kitchen program will be the recipient of a significant and sustainable contribution thanks to a generous gift spanning three years announced by the East Kootenay Community Credit Union (EKC).

Faster internet for Columbia Valley communities It’s normally not as profitable to deliver high speed internet to rural areas, but a federal subsidy program has changed that — and the smaller communities in the valley are likely to benefit.

For a private firm interested in expanding online networks, more than 80 per cent of broadband infrastructure project costs will be covered.

FlexiNET and Wink Wireless have both shown interest in projects around the valley, affecting areas in and around Edgewater, Spillimacheen, Brisco, and Canal Flats.

Of the incentive sub-

sidy, some will be provided regionally. If an application is successful, the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) indicated during its regular meeting on Friday, January 9th a willingness to support 17.5 per cent of the project costs The federal government provides 50 per cent of the cost, and the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) will cover an additional 17.5 per cent.

Winter Composting 1. What’s Happening? With cold temperatures having slowed down or maybe even stopped decomposition activity in the composter, you might wonder if it is really worth keeping the pile going in the winter. You bet it is. The composting pile will start right back up as air temperatures warm up in the spring.

2. Get Ready for Action. If you can maintain your compost pile through the winter, you are already a step ahead when spring arrives. Keep layering the materials in your bin throughout the winter, alternating equal amounts of greens and browns and maybe even a layer of soil in between.

3. Some Like it Hot. Your goal for the perfect winter compost bin is creating a balanced "hot pile" which will keep the decomposition process going. You can create additional heat by insulating your bin. A great option is stacking up straw bales around the outside of your bin and snow can be used as an effective supplement.

4. To Turn or not to Turn. While turning the compost pile is a must through the warm months, doing so in winter may release too much heat. This is another reason that layering is so important. If the pile is too wet once spring arrives, you should turn the pile once or twice and blend in more leaves or other brown (carbon) materials. You can even use a small amount of soil or finished compost that you've saved from the fall.

5. Conserving Your Energy. To keep your motivation up and the number of cold trips out to the compost pile down, you might consider investing in a bigger countertop or under-the-sink kitchen compost bucket. Many of them come with builtin filters to cut down on unwanted smells in the kitchen. Before you buy, consider things like look, weight, cleanability and durability.

6. Alternate Arrangements. A good winter alternative to keeping your outdoor compost going is vermicomposting. This method is the decomposition of organic waste with the help of red wiggler worms. It is a contained and virtually odour-free way of getting rid of your kitchen scraps and a great option for pretty much anywhere, from homes and apartments to schools and offices. If you have limited space, you might consider vermicomposting as a year-round composting method.

7. Let Worms do the Work. During the vermicomposting process, worms turn organic waste into “castings”, an excellent soil additive and plant fertilizer. If you provide the necessities of life for your worms, a vermicomposter can function smoothly for many years, quietly transforming your kitchen scraps into another form of “black gold”.

8. Keeping a Happy Home. The basic ingredients you will need to build your own worm bin is a solid-coloured container with a lid, drainage holes on the bottom, a drain pan and screened ventilation on the sides. Worms need bedding material filling about two thirds of the bin, this can be anything from shredded newspaper to cardboard, soil or peat moss.

9. Epicurious Wigglers. Red wiggler worms will eat most kitchen scraps, but just like in regular composting, avoiding meat, fats and oils as well as bones and dairy products will help you cut down on unwanted odours. Feed the worms once or twice a week by burying food waste at least one inch below the surface of the bedding. Ensure their bin is moist, but not wet.

10. Not all Worms are Created Equal. Red wiggler worms are the best choice for a composting bin.

They are usually not available from bait suppliers, but you can order them at the garden centre or if you know anyone who is already vermicomposting, they may give you a handful to get started. A good guideline is to have about a pound of worms to deal with the scraps of one to three people.

Opinion: Hippy science is easy, and wrong

Please, if you did, I don’t want the details.

I’m here to discuss the underlying assumptions of this fad. TV presenter Dr. Oz is a promoter of various schemes, soup diets and the like, but there are many books and consumer products being flogged.

“Supplements, tea, homeopathy, coffee enemas, ear candles and foot baths promise you a detoxified body,” writes Ontario pharmacist Scott Gavura, who treats cancer patients with medicine’s most potent drugs.

Frustrated by the pharmacy industry’s willingness to cash in on fake cures for nonexistent conditions, Gavura began contributing to ScienceBasedMedicine. org, where you can search “detox” find his takedown of this notion.

He traces the roots of purification rituals in religious and medical history, such as when patients were bled with leeches.

Credible physicians abandoned theories of “autointoxication” in the 19th century.

“Today’s version of autointoxication argues that some combination of food additives, salt, meat, fluoride, prescription drugs, smog, vaccine ingredients, GMOs and perhaps last night’s bottle of wine are causing a buildup of ‘toxins’ in the body,” Gavura writes. “And don’t forget gluten. Gluten is the new evil and therefore, is now a toxin.”

Gluten-free products now occupy whole sections of grocery stores, not far from the pricey “organic” produce that may or may not be tested for synthetic pesticides.

Living in the Lower Mainland 20 years ago, I noticed people lugging big plastic jugs to the grocery store to fill with water. Metro Vancouver is a rainforest, with some of the best tap water in the world, so I wondered what they were trying to avoid.

Discreet inquiries yielded similar answers.

Aside from the odd superstition about chlorine or fluoride, they had no idea at all. They didn’t know about the Coquitlam reservoir, or ozonation, or what they were buying, which was essentially municipal water run through a filter. They had been convinced to pay $2 for water in plastic bottles, and this somehow led to the conclusion that their tap water is only fit for washing clothes and driveways.

In the past year I have had an argument with a registered nurse at a blood donor clinic, annoyed that the health ministry denied her imagined “right” to infect frail patients with influenza, and with a veteran politician who only recently overcame a vague taboo against putting vaccines in her body.

It’s no wonder people constantly fall for enviro-scares like toxins from the Alberta oil sands that are actually concentrated in cities where all that fuel is burned, or the threat of genetically modified canola oil, or smart meters. The media are frequently part of the problem, lacking scientific literacy and preferring conflict over common sense.

Take Vancouver (please). The mayor rose to fame with a company that sold overpriced imported tropical fruit juice in single-serving plastic bottles. Calling it “Happy Planet” convinced a new generation of urban rubes that they’re doing something for the environment. Plus, there are “no chemicals” in it, to cite the central myth of hippy science.

At the risk of giving you too much information, I did a cleanse last year. It was for a screening colonoscopy, one of many that have taxed the B.C. health care system since a new test was added to the standard medical checkup.

Try that one if you’re over 50.

Dear Parents, It’s that time of year again when the government-mandated Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA) tests are given to Grade 4 and 7 students across BC. This year, as we have for the past several years, teachers are asking you to request that your children be excused from these tests.

The FSA tests do not count toward your children’s marks and they do not help students learn or teachers teach. In some cases, they cause unnecessary stress for no real gain. Teachers have long been concerned about these tests and the misuse of the data by an ideological “think tank” called the Fraser Institute to unfairly and inappropriately rank schools.

A single test should never be used to pit school communities against each other. But that is exactly what happens every year and it’s time we worked together to end the misleading practice.

Please take the opportunity to reach out any time with your concerns. Your children’s teachers will be happy to help.

BC teachers are actively working with the BC government and other education stakeholders on new ways to assess our public education system. We are part of BC’s Advisory Group on Provincial Assessment, the graduation SerrNovik/iStock/Thinkstock requirements review, and the ongoing curriculum redesign teams.

Province campaigns for kids waiting for adoption From the Valley Echo The provincial government has been campaigning in recent week through social media and other means to try to help some of the more than 1,000 kids in B.C. waiting for adoption to help find their “forever families”.

The campaign kicked of on November 3rd and is still running, using online advertising, tweets and Facebook posts not only encourage potential adoptive parents, but also dispel adoption myths and promote unique and adoptive families.

As part of the campaign local Kootenay couple Jane Byers and Amy Bohigian have been sharing their story.

The couple adopted their now seven-year-old twins, Franny and Theo, six years ago.

“We knew there were all these kids waiting (for adoption) in B.C., so we wanted to adopt locally,” said Byers. “It has been such a positive experience, really I can’t say enough about it.”

Although tremendously worthwhile, the adoption process is neither easy nor quick — the time from when Byers and Bohigian first got ready to do the first stage in the process (the home study) to finally having the twins placed with them was more than 18 months. For many couples the process can take

even longer.

Even beginning the home study took awhile, with delay pushing it back several months.

The home study consists of 10 visits by a social worker to the couple’s home, each involving extensive interviews.

“It’s a whole gamut of interviews. It’s extraordinarily rigourous, they really ask every thing about you, your background, about your life.

You forget what privacy is, but it’s good that it’s so thorough,” said Byers.

The home study ran from March to August and in September Byers and Bohigian got a call saying the couple was being consider along with almost 10 other couples as the potential adoptive parents of a set of twins.

“We were then in this process that was like the most most excruciating playoffs you can imagine,” said Byers. “Every two weeks we’d get another call, saying ‘we’re now down to seven couples and you’re still in the running.’ Then two weeks later, another call, ‘we’re down to six couples and you’re still in the running.’’”

The couples were pared down by a committee, and Bohigian and Byers were dealing with three social workers at any given time — the one appointed as guardian of the kids, one dealing specifically with the adoption and one

from the couple’s hometown.

“The interesting part of our story is that we are a same-sex couple and the foster parents (who were raising the kids in the meantime) were fundamentalist Christians and initially they were opposed to us as the choice (for adoption),” said Byers. “Initially we were told that the ministry (of Children and Family Development) didn’t discriminate (against same sex couples) but we were told to expect to wait for a longer time than a traditional family for a placement. As it turned out we didn’t, we were matched with our first prospective adoptive kids.”

Part of the adoption process included a meeting with the foster parents, for which Bohigian and Byers were nervous.

But the meeting went well and, as one of the final steps in the adoption process, Byers and Bohigian spent about two weeks staying in the foster parents’ home.

“A same-sex couple and fundamentalist Christians living together, you could almost write a sitcom about that, but in the end we all got along really well and we’re friends,” said Byers.

The process of adopting in the Kootenay region is quite similar to adopting in a more urban area of B.C., with the only difference being some parenting courses here are done by teleconferencing instead of in-person, according to Byers.

Adopting twins of a difference race (Franny and Theo have Indian heritage) in the Kootenay region does also mean Byer and Bohigian frequently go to big cities, so the twins can be around other people who have the same physical appearance.

“It’s essential. Even if you talk about it (transracial family identity), you still need to take them to see other people who look like them,” said Byers.

But despite the hurdles presented by adoption, Byers and Bohigian couldn’t be happier.

“There can be challenges, but prospective parents just need to be honest about what they can manage. It’s all about the match (of parents and kids),” said Byers, adding she hopes her family’s story can help other potential parents come forward to begin the process of adoption.

Kimberley hosts Sparwood Search and Rescue in joint excercise

“These are great things to happen in practice, but not on a call,” said

Reid. “But the great thing is now that we know the limitations, we can address them so that when we’re on a call they don’t become a problem.”

Between Sparwood and Kimberley, the

two Search and Rescue teams try to practice together on a quarterly basis.

“For us, winter was important to get together because we wanted to look at the capabilities of the teams,” said

Reid. “We wanted to see how good each team is at travelling in the snow and how our equipment works.”

Reid added that the importance of these practices is due to the fact that Search and Rescue teams often get called up on cases together.

“Because of the size of most of the teams we generally respond together,” explained Reid.

“In some cases, teams from Fernie, Cranbrook, Kimberley and Golden have teamed up on one call. Because we often respond together, it’s a good idea to practice together.”

Reid described the Hellroaring Creek region as a “high-hazard avalanche area”, as Search and Rescue have breached that area during past incidents of two fatalities, a recovery and a rescue.

The next joint practice for Kimberley and Sparwood will be in Sparwood sometime in February where the teams will experiment with getting a Sno-Cat into precarious areas of Sparwood.

Five of the most elegant American cars

By Rob Sass Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow famously wrote, “In character, in manner, in style, in all the things, the supreme excellence is simplicity.”

And one could argue that the same is true in automotive design. American car design of the 1950s-1970s was beloved for its flamboyance; here are 1963-65 Buick Riviera: The 1963 Riviera was the result of GM design head Bill Mitchell’s desire to produce something that was a combination of a Rolls-Royce and a Ferrari.

Whether he succeeded in that odd mash-up is debatable, but the 1963-65 Riv was a thing of great elegance and sim-

plicity, particularly the 1965 model with hidden headlamps.

Introduced at the height of Camelot, it was as elegant as Jackie Kennedy.

1956-57 Continental Mk II: The Continental was emphatically not a Lincoln, even though it shared the name of numerous products of that division of the Ford Motor Company. For two brief years, Continental was a division unto itself and the Mk II may well have been the most elegant post-war car built in America.

Costing the then-unheard-of sum of $10,000 (the equivalent of almost $87,000 in today’s money), the care and craftsmanship that went into each car ensured that Ford still

1953 Studebaker Regal Starlight coupe: Famous industrial designer Raymond Loewy put together a team of talented designers that included Robert Bourke to design a car like no other of the 1950s. Low, sleek and incredibly elegant, the Regal Starlight is largely forgotten today by all but the most diehard car collectors and fans of the long-defunct Studebaker Corporation of South Bend, Ind. 1975-79 Cadillac Seville: In a decade not necessarily known for elegance (heaven knows how many high school kids rode to prom in dad’s Seville wearing powder blue polyester tuxedos), the Seville stood out against the odds as a particu-

larly elegant design. Not only was it handicapped by being a product of the 1970s, but it was the first time that a substantial number of Chevrolet components were used in a Cadillac (it shared the same underpinnings as the Nova).

But this was no Cimarron. The first-generation Seville was elegant, restrained and every bit a Cadillac. Although it was the smallest car in the lineup, it was the most expensive and it looked the part.

1956 Chrysler 300B: The first of the 300 “letter-series” (the 1955 C-300 was never actually called the “300A”), it was probably the prettiest Mopar design of the 1950s.

Its pillarless hardtop design and restrained use of chrome were wildly inconsistent with the over-the-top performance that the car was capable of

have two or three cars, so that becomes a lot of tires to stack up.”

“Many people also buy a second set of steel rims for their winter tires,’’ added Gardiner.

“Now your car doesn’t look too attractive for five months of the year. And with TPMS (tire pressure monitoring systems) if you don’t replicate that sensor on each wheel you lose an important safety feature. The other thing too, most tire shops have a huge spike in business in November and April, so you have to line-up with a gazillion other people.”

The all-weather tire is also a perfect tire for snowbirds, according to Gardiner. “A lot of them like to get home for Christmas. An all-weather tire performs well on hot-dry roads in those southern states and also on ice and snow when they come back to the frozen north.” An all-weather will also come with the Rubber Association’s snow tire symbol (snowflake inside a mountain) designation on the tire’s sidewall, which is a winter driving requirement in Quebec and allseason tire does not have it.

An all-season tire is designed to provide optimal ride and wear characteristics, according to Gardiner. Some all-season tires that will provide over 140,000 km of tread wear, however, tires also have a “best before” life expectancy.

“In my garage, we typically try to match our customers with a tire that will give them four or five years of good service, based on how much they drive,” said Gardiner.

The Nokian passenger tires that Gardiner highly recommends come with 80,000 km or 100,000 km tread wear guarantees. They also come with a clever DSI (driving safety indicator) feature moulded into the tread that’s patented by Nokian. The largest number that’s still visible (see photo) is the tread depth remaining in millimetres. When the snowflake disappears it’s no longer recommended for use as a winter tire.

There’s also a unique noise reduction feature on every Nokian passenger tire. The outboard tread grove has a dimpled “golf ball” finish. On a golf ball, dimples control airflow over its surface so it can travel a longer distance. They also, however, offer a noise reduction side benefit that’s exploited by Nokian.

Nokian is a Finnish tire company that specializes in winter tires and operates the only permanent winter tire testing facility in the world. It was the first tire maker to offer an allweather tire in Canada and Kal Tire has an exclusive importation agreement with Nokian. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

OBITUARY

Beverley R. Mazur 1932-2015 The family of Bev Mazur sadly announces her passing on January 13, 2015 in Cranbrook, BC at the age of 82.

Bev was born in Cranbrook on July 21, 1932. She went from herding her Dad's milk cows to meeting a young Lumberjack at a barn dance. Bev married Don (Scrubby) on May 3, 1952. She always put her family first. Bev enjoyed baking, the best part of the meal was the huckleberry pie. She could kick butt in crib. Fishing at their Secret lake paid off with her always catching the largest fish. The couple did extensive travel but Hawaii was on top of the list. Later in life it was all about the Cabin in the Woods.

Bev leaves to mourn her husband Don of 62 years of marriage; their spoiled dog Chip; 2 sons Clay; Henry (Caroline); her daughter Donna (Jim); 3 grandchildren Lisa (Trent); Jennifer (Char); and Donielle; one great granddaughter Ella.

Bev will miss that special bond between her younger sister Annie.

A special thanks to her granddaughter Jen who put her life on hold to help her Grannie in her final days at home.

There is a New bright Star watching over us!

OBITUARY Donald J. Mazur 1932-2015 The family of Don Mazur sadly announces his passing on January 18, 2015 in Cranbrook, BC at the age of 82.

Don (Scrubby) was born in Vancouver on November 23, 1932.

Don was a respected business in the Lumber Industry.

He owned portable sawmills and logging operations in the Yahk, Flathead and Ruby Creek areas. He also operated his own sawmill at Elko. The bush provided a good, clean living for his family. The Love of his Life was his wife Bev. He taught his 3 children to respect the Land, and how to Fish and Hunt in the Bloom & Gold Creek areas.

Scrubby retired at 57. Don & Bev were fishermen so they followed the salmon runs from Vancouver Island to the Queen Charlottes. Adventures included driving across Canada, to the Baja and the Everglades. Don's memorable hunting trips were to Dease Lake and Africa. They took a few cruises including the Panama Canal & the Bahamas.

Scrubby was always busy helping his Plumbob Neighbours. He will be remembered for taking an official coffee break with his friends & relatives. It is safe to say he was a favourite Uncle.

The Cabin in the Woods was their second home. They both enjoyed the peace and quiet it offered. They were keen on identifying the birds and watching the action at the salt licks.

At 82 Scrubby was living his life to the fullest. He was still out there snowmobiling, quading, fishing & chicken hunting.

Don leaves to mourn their spoiled dog Chip; 2 sons Clay; Henry (Caroline); his daughter Donna (Jim); 3 grandchildren Lisa (Trent); Jennifer (Char); and Donielle; one great granddaughter Ella.

Don will miss that special bond between brother John and his 2 sisters Evelyn and Irene and his rowdy friend Warreny Boardman.

STEPHENS, Claire Winifred December 17, 1938-January 16, 2015 Claire Winifred Stephens passed away in the early hours of Sunday, January 16, 2015, shortly after her 76th birthday, after a long struggle with dementia. She is now at peace with her father, her mother and her Lord.

Claire was born in Tekopurn, New Zealand on December 17, 1938, and later started her long nursing career which took her from New Zealand and Australia to England and finally to Cranbrook in 1969.

She ended her career working as a home care nurse with Interior Health.

Claire had a no-nonsense approach to life in general and to nursing in particular. She was respected, loved and appreciated by all who knew her.

Claire was predeceased by her father and mother in New Zealand and is survived by her husband, Brian and his sons, Corey (Leanne, Cameron, Cara) and Craig, her two brothers, Warwick (Patricia) and Alan in New Zealand, and her son Boyd Kennard from a previous marriage. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews in New Zealand.

There will not be a service but those wishing to remember Claire in a way she would have admired, can simply do something helpful or kind for someone in need, or consider adopting a homeless pet.

Alice Cullum December 19, 1911-January 11, 2014 Alice Cullum passed away with grace and dignity with her loving family by her side on the evening of Sunday January 11, 2014 at Joseph Creek Care Village in Cranbrook, BC. Alice was born On December 19th 1911, in Weldon Saskatchewan. She blessed the family with 103 years of grace on this earth. Matt, loving husband of 47 years in 1987, as well as 4 siblings Edna, Linda, Arvid and Ingvar, predeceased Alice. She resided in the Pas, Manitoba from the 1920’s to 1940’s, moved to Winnipeg in the 1950’s and finally, with family arrived in Cranbrook in 1988.

Alice dedicated her life to the well being of her family as well as excelling as a life grand master bridge player and an ardent fan of and noteworthy curler. She was also a wonderful hairdresser in the Pas, MB for several years before she married.

Alice is survived by her 2 sons; Gary (Susi), and Brant (Dianne), 10 grandchildren; Corrina, David, Leanne, Marina, Darlene, Linda, Jessica, Krista, Alissa, and Brittany as well as her treasured 16 great- grand children and one great, great-grand son.

The family is so blessed to have had her in their lives for such a long time, and we will never forget the impact she had on us all.

OBITUARY Pearl Victoria (Becher) Sumner July 23, 1928-December 27, 2014 In loving memory we announce the passing of Pearl Sumner at St. John Hospice, UBC. Pearl was relocated to Vancouver in June to better meet the challenges of cancer which she faced with the remarkable courage, grace and optimism that characterized her life.

Born in Kindersley, Saskatchewan as the eldest of 6, she is pre-deceased by brother Jim Hayden, sister Sylvia Hayden, and survived by sisters Shirley White, Marlene Clark and Ellen Cashen. Pearl was predeceased by her first husband of 46 years, Kurt Becher (d. 1992), and will be dearly missed by her second husband Walter Sumner of Salmon Arm and her two step daughters Elaine Shigatomi and Emily Nelson, three step grandchildren and 3 great step grandchildren. She was very proud of her 17 beloved grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren by her nine adoring children: Alice Thorner, Tom Becher, Lynda Kazanowski, Randy Becher, Robert Becher, Mary Ann Becher, Nancy Theissen, Harley Becher, and Shannon Ekkle.

Pearl's warm smile and twinkling eyes will be fondly remembered by her extended family and many friends throughout the Columbia and Okanagan Valleys where she resided over the last 70 years. While a dedicated mother devoted to the tumult of her large family, she touched many throughout British Columbia with her serene and caring heart, her enthusiasm and love for the beauty in life, and her relentless spirit to make the best of it. She was a classy lady.

Dale Honeyman 1924 - 2015 Mom was reunited with her soul mate Harold Honeyman on January 15, 2015, at 90 years of age. She proudly served with the Royal Canadian Air Force Women's Division from 1943 to 1946, and was a long term member and supporter of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 67 in Kimberley and then in Cranbrook at Branch 24. Mom loved to help out where she could and was most comfortable doing so from behind the scenes. She passed on her passion for good food and cooking to her family and she was known for her nurturing spirit in the garden and the support she freely gave to her children, their families and those who spent time with her.

Mom will be lovingly remembered by her sons Ray, Gordon (Cynthia), Collin (Laura) and Keith (Sally); as well as by her grandchildren Michael, Brian, Lindsay, Rachelle, Carly and Matthew; her two great granddaughters Jocelyn and Frankie Dale and numerous nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by her husband Harold and her son Arthur.

A special thank you to the staff at Joseph Creek Care Village and East Kootenay Regional Hospital for their care and support.

Margaret "Maggie" Francis Dorris 1930 - 2015 Maggie was born in Cranbrook, BC on June 13, 1930 at the St. Eugene Hospital, the first of three children to Eleanor and Frank Bridges, long time Cranbrook residents.

She attended Cranbrook Central School and after graduating from the Cranbrook High School, she attended Sprott Shaw Community College in Vancouver BC, returning thereafter to work at the National Fruit Company and the Provincial Health Unit in Cranbrook.

In 1950, she joined 2 of her friends to travel to Montreal, QC where she worked with Budge Carbon Paper Manufacturing Company. The small town called and she returned to settle in Cranbrook and work for the Provincial Social Welfare Department. In 1953 she married Gerald Dorris, the father of her three children. The Dorris' lived in New Westminster, Lethbridge, AB, Spokane, WA, and Scottsdale, AZ, as well as the place she always loved, Cranbrook, for many years.

In 1979, Maggie returned to Arizona where she lived till her retirement in 1992. During that time she worked with Varian Electronics Inc., and Intergroup Healthcare of Arizona. After retiring she maintained her home and a rental business in Scottsdale as well as her heavenly place at Moyie Lake where she spent several months every year. Maggie said her roots were at Moyie Lake, having spent many summers on the lake at Green Bay where her uncle Harold Bridges, who was founder of the Green Bay Resort with her grandfather, JF Bridges. Her place at Moyie, which she shared with her son David, remained a 'work in progress' and she often said, she was doing exactly what she had always wanted to do with her life. In 2006, Cranbrook called again and she moved back where she settled happily till her passing on Thursday, January 15th, 2015.

Maggie was predeceased by her parents, her beloved son Michael Dorris in 2008, her nephews Allan & Ronald Bridges, and her companion Dennis Scott in 1999.

She is survived by her son David Dorris (Rhonda) and their 3 sons, Jordy (Amy), Parker and Aaron; and her daughter Nancy Lemire (Monty) and her 2 daughters, Melissa (Nedi) and Amy (Ira) and three great-grandchildren; Fynn, Nash & Micah. She is also survived by her brother Harvey Bridges (Jean) and their family; and her sister Lois Maguire (Ernie) and their family.

Maggie was very close with her brother and sister who were exceptionally kind to her. Maggie likened her many friends to jewels and she cherished them that way. She lived life in a very positive way. She was a lifetime hockey contributor (member of the founding executive board of the Cranbrook Colts Junior Hockey League), she liked to laugh, to play bridge (especially duplicate bridge), and wasn't afraid of hard work - that is the legacy she received from her mother Eleanor and the one she leaves to the wonderful young people in her surviving family.

A memorial service for Maggie will be held at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook on Friday, January 23, 2015 at 1:00 pm.

LIPSACK - Margorie Esther 1949 - 2015 On the early evening hours of Monday, January 12th, 2015, Margorie Esther Lipsack passed away suddenly at her home at the age of 65 years.

Margorie was born in Cranbrook, BC on April 15th, 1949 to Fred and Lillian Lancaster, one of five children.

Margorie is survived by her husband of 45 years, Garth, and her two sons, Gary and Grant. She was pre-deceased by both of her parents.

Monday, February 9th the Family Fishing Derby for Kids with Cancer will return for its 6th year this BC Family Day. Held from 10am-3pm near Fort Steele at Horseshoe Lake, the annual Derby has become a Kootenay tradition bringing together communities and families from across the region.

Uniquely ‘Kootenay’, this outdoor event keeps the whole family entertained with ice fishing, tobogganing, hockey, and plenty of kids’ games including snow painting, tug-o-war and ice jug bowling. There are also contests for the Best Dressed Dog and the Best Dressed Toboggan, as well as door prizes, a 50/50 draw and silent auction. More than just a fun event, the Derby is a grass-roots fundraiser supported by local businesses, media, volunteers and service clubs to help children battling cancer. Proceeds are distributed by the Canadian Cancer Society to help families with financial support, travelling to treatment, accommodation, wigs, cancer information and peer support. The Society also operates Camp Goodtimes, a medically supervised, fun summer camp for children with cancer.

Thanks to the generous support of local businesses, the Derby also helps local children facing cancer enjoy a much deserved vacation from treatment. Dacota Freight sponsors a Disneyland vacation and Sunshine Houseboats sponsors a houseboat vacation on Lake Koocanusa.

Children facing cancer from all across the Kootenay region will be entered into a draw for these two trips. To ensure your family is entered, please contact the event organizers.

The 6th Annual Derby is being organized

by JCI Kootenay (Junior Chamber International), a service group known for organizing key community events including Cranbrook’s Santa Claus Parade, Leadercast, Balls of Steele Bocce Tournament, and various All Candidates Election Forums.

Tickets are available online at https://eastkootenay.snapd.com; in Cranbrook at Mountain Man Outdoors, Barber’s on Ninth and the Canadian Cancer Society; in Kimberley at Overwaitea Foods, SunLife Financial and Home Hardware; in Fort Steele at the Fort Steele Store and Gas Station. Tickets are just $10 for adults and $5 for children and seniors. Everyone needs a ticket to participate in the event.
