The show will go on now that community volunteers have stepped centre stage to revive an 81-year Greater Trail tradition.

The Kootenay Festival of the Arts is set to run April 6 through April 18 after the 10-day showcase of young talent was shelved two years ago due to lack of volunteers.

With the help of past organizers Beth Lloyd and Shirley Mendoza, the festival’s new co-chairs Nicole Zimmer and Audrey Gerein canvassed the region to bring back the event that highlights youthful talent for show and adjudication.

With nine community members on board – the festival’s syllabus is now available at kootenayfestivalofthearts.ca and entry forms have been sent to young talent ready to put their skills to the test in the areas of music, dance, speech and dramatic arts.

Deadline for admission is Feb. 6, and Zimmer expects to be receiving the bulk of admissions in the next few weeks.

Ballet, modern and stage dance is slated to run Apr. 8 to Apr. 11; certificates of merit will be awarded to piano players from April 13 to Apr. 18; vocal solos and choirs performances Apr. 13 and Apr. 14; speech and dramatic arts Apr. 14 and Apr. 15; and strings and guitar Apr. 16 and Apr. 17 at the First Presbyterian Church.

Additionally, there will be two concerts, the first on Apr. 11 to highlight dance, and the second on Apr. 18 to showcase all other disciplines.

While the show is a go, more

hands are still needed to help during the festival’s day-to-day run.

There’s no experience necessary for the odd jobs, however, there is a special perk for volunteers because they can hear and see firsthand all the exceptional talent on stage.

News Bringing Selkirk College to the community A wealth of Selkirk College community education and workplace training opportunities are currently arriving to mailboxes throughout the West Kootenay-Boundary region.

Creating educational experiences that inspire lifelong learning is an important part of the Selkirk College vision and the winter and spring calendar is a cornerstone of making it happen. There are hundreds of courses available in the 112-page booklet that includes offerings between January and July.

“There is so much going on at Selkirk College,” says manager Gregg Neelin. “When you flip through the calendar, the scope and depth of the programming that we offer is amazing. I think some people might be surprised to see just how much is in there.”

From learning to make fused glass jewelry to occupational first aid to ballroom dancing, the winter and spring calendar is thick with courses that appeal to a variety of interests.

“We offer a mix of different programming for a whole range of learners in all of the communities that we serve,” says Neelin. “There are plenty of general interest courses, but the vocational job-related courses are substantial.”

Selkirk College works closely with local employers to ensure the workplace component of the course offerings match the skills required in today’s West Kootenay-Boundary economy.

“It’s a catalog of really important courses and certificate programs for people to get the skills they need to further advance their careers or to get an introduction to careers they have an interest in,” says Neelin.

Providing the Right Tools for Women One of the community education instructors featured in the winter and spring calendar is Michelle Colley. A journeyman carpenter, the Ymir resi-

dent first offered a series of introductory courses for women this past fall.

“I have been thinking about doing this for a very long time,” says Colley, who has been a carpenter for the last 10 years.

“I kind of got tired hearing my girlfriends saying they couldn’t do things that they really wanted to. It seems like there is still this fear gap of actually taking on carpentry. Some of it might have to do with the fear of failing and the power tool side of it.”

Colley graduated with a degree in environmental science from the University of Calgary, but before diving into a new career took a year off to be a ski bum at Big White near Kelowna. In order to pay the bills, Colley applied to Big White and was offered a position in the maintenance department doing carpentry work.

With a newfound passion, Colley decided to pursue carpentry as a career. She moved to Ymir eight years ago and has since completed her Red Seal, taking some of the formal component of her education at Selkirk College in Nelson.

“When I got the job at Big White I realized how much I enjoyed being active and using my hands,” she says. “At the same time, the creativity of carpentry really fulfilled everything I was looking for.”

After a successful start to community education with Selkirk College last semester, Colley has expanded her courses and is now offering six different programs for women at both Nelson’s Silver King Campus and in Nakusp. Her courses offer basics for women, a project-based course which is more advanced and new this semester is carpentry for women (basic) mom and daughter skills building which will run on May 9.

“An important part is building confidence,” says Colley.

“What I encourage students to do is not be afraid to just try it.

Mental health for children and youth — how to get the help you need

BY DR. DAVID SMITH For children and teenagers in BC, coping well with the demands of school work, busy schedules and social relationships in today’s chaotic world reflects resilient mental health. But some BC children and youth are unable to cope well with the daily stresses of their lives and

the results can be debilitating or tragic.

An estimated 13 per cent of youth in BC each year experience a mental health issue —that means up to 83,700 children under the age of 19 in BC may be suffering. Studies show that receiving appropriate help at the right time may enable a child or youth to return to good health or prevent the escalation of symptoms, warding off larger crises or more chronic illnesses, and even at times saving young lives.

But unfortunately, the majority of youth experiencing a mental health issue, or their families, do not seek help. Why is this? There are likely a number of key factors: youth and family may lack understanding about mental health issues or may be unable to recognize the symptoms of a mental health problem; they may not know how to access the right services, who to see, or how to navigate BC’s mental health system; they may be worried about possible stigma, or labelling,

and hoping it is simply a phase that will pass.

As an adolescent and adult psychiatrist working for the last 11 years in Interior Health, I appreciate how frightening and worrying it can be for youth and families when a mental health issue arises.

But I also know that the right help can make all the difference and that good recovery is possible even with some of the most serious of mental health concerns. And “help” does not always mean treatment with medication. In fact, many mental health problems in children and youth can be very successfully treated with other techniques, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, which, in essence, teaches skills to address the thoughts, feelings and behaviours that underlie a mental health problem.

Working with a group of mental health colleagues in the Interior and on Vancouver Island — including families with lived experience, mental health clinicians

from the Ministry of Children and Family Development, health authority professionals, school counsellors, family doctors, pediatricians and others — we have come up with a series of short columns to run in this paper to help youth and families recognize and understand some common mental health concerns. Over the next seven weeks, in seven articles, we will talk about issues like anxiety, depression, substance use, eating disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, schizophrenia and family support. We will help you recognize the symptoms and know when and how to seek help. We will talk about successful skills, actions and treatments. These columns, as well as running in your local paper, can also be found at sharedcarebc.ca so you can access them online or share with friends and family.

Numerous high quality websites are producing up to date information about a wide variety of mental health concerns and in each

column, we will link you to online resources in BC for more information on each condition. A few excellent provincial sites to check out now include: openmindbc.ca; mindcheck.ca, forcesociety.ca, and keltymentalhealth.ca.

Next column, we will talk about anxiety.

This series of columns on common child and youth mental health issues is a project of the Child and Youth Mental Health and Substances Use Collaborative. The collaborative involves multiple individuals, organizations and ministries all working together to increase the number of children, youth, and their families receiving timely access to mental health services and support in the Interior Health and Vancouver Island regions. The collaborative is jointly funded by Doctors of BC and the government of BC.

Website helps navigate local youth mental health landscape A wide range of child and youth mental health care services exist in West Kootenay/Boundary, including counselling, advocacy, day programs, and crisis intervention.

A website launched last fall at kootenayfamilyplace. org/kbsearchlight is the first web resource to link all of them together — from Beaverdell to Kaslo to Salmo to Nakusp.

The front page has an illustrated map of the region, where you can click to find local services, resources and apps for a range of problems, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, selfharm, substance abuse and more.

You can search the site by community, program, or service. There are also videos, answers to frequently asked questions, plus crisis information, and a list of self-help options.

“As a family physician this

resource is definitely of value as I work with my patients to refer them to the most appropriate local support services,” says Dr. Lilli Kerby, who practices at Kootenay Boundary regional hospital in Trail.

The creation of KB Searchlight is part of a child and youth mental health and substance use collaborative funded by the BC government and Doctors of BC. The program started with the goal of providing timely access to mental health and substance abuse services and supports throughout the province to children, youth and their families. Interior Health was the first region to partner with the collaborative.

The website was created by a local action team that brought together a wide array of local stakeholders, including families, doctors, mental health counsellors, drug and alcohol counsel-

lors, community agencies and more.

studying to work in youth mental health. He’s eager to share his story and experiences to help other youth and families.

Hall Siding honours brothers Osner and Winslow GREG NESTEROFF West Kootenay Advertiser

Eighty-fourth in a series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Hall Siding, 16 km south of Nelson along Highway 6, is a former railway stop, first mentioned in the Nelson Tribune of December 14, 1893: “The stations on the Nelson and Fort Sheppard road are named Waneta, Beaver, Meadows, Salmon, Hall, Summit, Nelson, and Kootenay.”

The earliest use of the current form of the name was in the Northport (Wash.) News of September 26, 1895: “Joe Keller and Ike Thomas, who have been doing prospect work along the Salmon in the neighborhood of Hall’s Siding, BC have returned fully satisfied …”

The siding is named for brothers Osner (1836-1917) and Winslow (1831-?) Hall of Colville, who led the party that discovered silver and copper deposits on Toad Mountain in 1886. They subsequently staked the Silver King claim, which gave birth to Nelson.

A townsite, known as Halls, was surveyed by O.B.N. Wilkie out of the original Nelson and Fort Sheppard land grant and deposited with the land registry on January 9,

1899. The streets were named Ivy, Vine, Fern, and Myrtle. Today only Ivy Street survives.

The Hall post office opened in 1898, closed in 1904, reopened in 1914, and closed again in 1925.

Hall Siding remains a small residential community. The name is preserved in Hall Siding Road.

HALL LANDING and HEALY’S LANDING These two places on the Duncan River might be one and the same, but it’s hard to say. The former’s namesake is unknown, but the latter is after John (Jack) Healy (often spelled Healey) a packer of supplies to mining camps and halfway house proprietor.

Healy also has a namesake creek that flows into the Lardeau River, first mentioned in the Nelson Miner of October 1, 1892: “It is reported that a prospector from Kaslo … has made a rich strike in the vicinity of the group of claims recently located by J.W. Haskins and others near the head of Healy creek.”

Hall Landing is first mentioned in The Kootenaian of August 17, 1899: “Passengers for Hall Landing leave Kaslo on steamer Hercules on Friday, proceeding to Duncan same afternoon by steamer Marion, leaving there on Saturday at 8 a.m. and arriving at Hall Landing

at noon.

In 1900, John Healy applied for a liquor license at Hall’s Landing — not to be confused with another Hall’s Landing on Upper Arrow Lake, between Arrowhead and Revelstoke. In 1901, he applied for a renewal at “Hall Creek Landing.”

According to Maitland Harrison in Where the Lardeau River Flows, before coming to Canada Healy was a jockey in Ireland. He was lured across the ocean to ride for a “rich American,” but later set out on his own. Arriving in the Lardeau, “he built this little log house and got a bunch of horses and started the hotel. He had about five or six bedrooms, a living room, bar, dining room, and kitchen. It was rough and ready but beautiful.”

Around 1908, Jack’s niece Maude came out from Ireland to join him. The two grew their own food, hunted and trapped. “She’d cook and keep the place and he ran the horses,” Harrison recalled.

“People would come up on the boat and they’d put them up at night and feed them. The next day Jack would take them up the valley with his pack train.”

The earliest mention of Healy’s Landing, which is about 12 miles (19 km) from Hall Creek, is in the

HAFI Funds Home Modifications for Disabled Man When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced.

“The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small.

I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.”

Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheelin shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.

“ I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.”

Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home.

The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS FOR YOUR PETS The start of a new year often inspires people to make resolutions to be a better person in the next 12 months, whether that means eating a healthier diet, starting or improving a fitness regimen, setting workrelated goals or being more environmentally friendly.

The Trail BC SPCA has a few suggestions for B.C.’s animal lovers for 2015: • Get moving! Get yourself and your dog(s) off the couch and into the outdoors. Most dogs need walking at least twice daily to stay healthy and you will benefit too. If you don’t have a dog, why not volunteer to walk dogs at your local shelter?

• ID your pet. The SPCA reunites thousands of lost animals with their families every year. Many animals are never claimed, however, and must be adopted into new homes because they have no ID. Ensure your pets have identification tags on their collar and a microchip or ear tattoo, and keep the information updated.

• Bake and share cupcakes.

Take part in National Cupcake Day on Feb. 23 and help end animal cruelty one cupcake at a time. The money you raise baking and distributing cupcakes by donation will help the BC SPCA rescue, re-home and provide emergency services for injured and abandoned animals in B.C. Get involved by registering online at nationalcupcakeday.ca.

• Spay and neuter your pets.

Help spread the word about the crucial importance of spaying or neutering pets – or make a donation to your local shelter to help with spay/neuter programs. Thousands of unwanted animals are born in B.C. each year – often with tragic consequences.

Tolko is interested in seeking individual proposals for a non-replaceable Log Hauling Contract with an annual volume of up to 300,000 tonnes. The work will be based out of Vernon, BC with the majority of the work taking place within the Southern Interior of BC. All the places we wanted to visit parks, malls, trails and shops were easily found with no hassles.

All that sparkles at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show Detroit, MI – Within moments of pulling out of a parking lot in the 2015 Cadillac CTS 3.6L AWD, its pristine crimson coat was soiled by the elements. And of course, salt, dirt, grime and all that isn’t amazing about winter in Toronto.

Nevertheless, its smooth and comfortable ride didn’t disappoint along the arduous and incredibly four-plus-hour drive to Detroit, Michigan for the 2015 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS.) I would soon trade in the coziness of heated leather seats – and steering wheel – for a pair of not-so-cozy leather shoes and roam the showfloor to check out what’s hot, cool and what sparkles amidst the industry’s top cars. It would only make sense to start with Cadillac’s latest offering when it comes to their “V” series cars.

At the Los Angeles Auto Show in late 2014, we met the ATS-V – the smaller brother of the mid-sized four-door I drove to Motown. Now, get ready for a performance sedan that will knock your socks off.

Cadillac CTS-V Arriving late in the summer of 2015, the 2016 Cadillac CTS-V is ready to take on its German competitors (like the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG) with

a whopping 640 horsepower and 630 lbft of torque.

The all-new third generation sedan is the most power-endowed product the brand has ever created.

But aside from power, you’ll have the luxury of the third generation Magnetic Ride Control to not only blast you through the corners with grace and poise, but with the comfort of being able to drive it around town, or between cities/countries without sacrificing an enjoyable ride.

Road or track, I’ll take this one for a spin any day.

Acura NSX Perhaps one of the most anticipated reveals of the last few years from the Japanese automaker, Acura, comes in the form of the NSX. The acronym, which stands for New Sports eXperience, rolled out onto the stage to a frenzy of flashes from the crowd. Heck, even funnyman, Jerry Seinfeld, couldn’t miss the reveal as he sat in the front row awaiting its presence.

While pricing hasn’t been released yet, it’ll likely be north of $150K. But, for that price, you get a vehicle that not only delivers gargantuan power, but one that is hybridized thanks to an allnew power unit. That unit is a twin-turbocharged, 75-degree DOHC V6 engine with a 9-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT) and three-electric motor Sport Hy-

brid system. Not to mention Acura’s Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), so it’s a perfect supercar for all seasons.

Chevrolet Volt Speaking of electric motors, Chevrolet gave us a preview of the 2016 Volt.

With a longer EV range and a lighter body, not to mention a new design, this plug-in hybrid is sure to win even more hearts over. Highlights include an EV range of up to 80 km, a new two-motor drive unit, which is now up to 12 percent more efficient and 45 kg (100 lb) lighter than the first-generation drive unit, and a new 1.5L range extender, designed to use regular unleaded fuel, offering a GMestimated combined fuel consumption rating of 5.7L/100km.

Completely changing gears, atop one of Lexus’ sparking vehicle at their stand was a concept bike that caught my eye. Not only because it was totally out of place at an auto show, but also because it looks so cool. NXB stands for Neo Xtreme Bike and comes with a Lexus original carbon frame, carbon wheels and a KYB inverted suspension up front. Even if it never is ridden, I still like the idea of a zero-emissions commute on something as interesting as this concept.

Chevrolet Bolt EV Concept For a zero emissions commute that doesn’t require muscles but rather a motor, the Chevrolet Bolt EV Concept is another step in the brand’s commitment to the electrification of automobiles.

It’s still a concept, but it embodies the philosophy of giving drivers over 300 kilometres of range out of one charge, without charging a premium for it.

The concept’s technological prowess can be linked with an App in which you can control various vehicular functions like starting the car from your smartphone. Additionally, it even incorporates the concept of automatic park-and-retrieval technology, which enables the driver to exit the vehicle and tell the Bolt EV concept to park itself – and when errands are completed, the Bolt EV concept can be summoned to return to the owner’s location.

Alexandra Straub For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, she has loved cars. She can even remember thinking at the age of six, “Only ten more years until I can get my licence!”

Born in Zurich, Switzerland to Hungarian parents, she moved to Canada when she was just a baby.

Spending her summers in Budapest with her grandparents helped cultivate a strong liking for motorsports. Alexandra can remember watching F1 races with her grandfather, and still does even when she goes to visit.

Over a decade ago, Alexandra started her career in the automotive industry. Since then, she has had countless stories and photos published. You can find her work online, in newspapers, magazines and on television. She has hosted “Shifting Gears Automotive TV” and regularly makes appearances on various shows talking about, you guessed it, all things automotive.

When she’s not testing out the latest in vehicular goodness, you’ll either find her on a motorcycle (she tests and writes about those, too), on a track or traveling the world.

While she considers her “job” her hobby, Alexandra enjoys other activities that don’t necessarily involve wheels, engines or motors. Growing up on the North Shore of Vancouver, she loves the mountains and the ocean. An avid snowboarder and a wannabe surfer, count on her enjoying the outdoors when she has the chance. And to really help her relax, she scrapbooks.

And one could argue that the same is true in automotive design. American car design of the 1950s-1970s was beloved for its flamboyance; here are 1963-65 Buick Riviera: The 1963 Riviera was the result of GM design head Bill Mitchell’s desire to produce

something that was a combination of a Rolls-Royce and a Ferrari. Whether he succeeded in that odd mash-up is debatable, but the 1963-65 Riv was a thing of great elegance and simplicity, particularly the 1965 model with hidden headlamps. Introduced at the height of Camelot, it was as elegant as Jackie Kennedy.

1956-57 Continental Mk II: The Continental was emphatically not a Lincoln, even though it shared the name of numerous products of that division of the Ford

Motor Company. For two brief years, Continental was a division unto itself and the Mk II may well have been the most elegant post-war car built in America. Costing the then-unheard-of sum of $10,000 (the equivalent of almost $87,000 in today’s money), the care and craftsmanship that went into each car ensured that Ford still lost money on each one.

Elvis, Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor were all Continental owners.

Never in neutral, the Brit-trained news guy drives projects as he would a finely tuned car, adding the options and features along the way to make the experience as good as it can be.

Indeed, Keith is an innovator in developing editorial content for all media platforms and a master at weaving informative and entertaining material of wide appeal into imaginative revenue generation projects.

He launched his journalistic career in 1975 as a reporter for his hometown newspaper in Blackpool, England, moving to Vancouver in 1980 where he began a 32-year-career with The Province/Vancouver Sun. Latterly he created such highly profitable and readable specialty sections at the papers as Driving and Sunday Homes.

The multiple-award-winner broadened his media experience by authoring two books, making regular TV appearances, hosting talk shows in Vancouver and Kelowna and writing and executive producing The Province Road Test quiz show for prime time TV. 1953 Studebaker Regal Starlight coupe: Famous industrial designer Raymond Loewy put together a team of talented designers that included Robert Bourke to design a car like no other of the 1950s. Low, sleek and incredibly elegant, the Regal Starlight is largely forgotten today by all but the most diehard car collectors and fans of the long-defunct Studebaker Corporation of South Bend, Ind.

1975-79 Cadillac Seville: In a decade not necessarily known for elegance (heaven knows how many high school kids rode to prom in dad’s Seville wearing powder blue polyester tuxedos), the Seville stood out against the odds as a particularly elegant design. Not only was it handicapped by being a product of the 1970s, but it was the first time that a substantial number of Chevrolet components were used in a Cadillac (it shared the same underpinnings as the Nova). But this was no

Cimarron. The first-generation Seville was elegant, restrained and every bit a Cadillac. Although it was the smallest car in the lineup, it was the most expensive and it looked the part.

1956 Chrysler 300B: The first of the 300 “letter-series” (the 1955 C-300 was never actually called the “300A”), it was probably the prettiest Mopar design of the 1950s. Its pillarless hardtop design and restrained use of chrome were wildly inconsistent with the over-the-top performance

that the car was capable of delivering from its 355-hp, 354-cubic-inch Hemi V-8. It terrorized NASCAR back in the day.

Tips for traveling with pets is looking for paper carriers in all areas for one day a week Call

Many pet owners feel vacations are more fun with their furry companions in tow. Traveling can be more complicated when pets are part of the equation, but there are ways to ensure a comfortable and safe trip.

The Humane Society of the United States says the safest and most comfortable way for pets to travel is inside a carrier or crate. Make sure the carrier is big enough so that the pet is comfortable and has some mobility, but not so big that he or she can be jostled around.

Carriers and crates should be anchored to the vehicle using a seatbelt or another device. Carriers that can move or bounce around are dangerous to the pet and the occupants of the car.

Airlines and railways often insist pets travel in carriers.

The safest place for pets during a road trip is in the back seat of a car or in a rear cargo area when possible. In the event of a crash, air bag deployment can seriously injure a pet that is riding along in the front seat.

Pet owners should put together a traveling kit that includes essential items their pets may need. Such essentials may include identification, a temporary travel tag for the collar with current contact information, vet records indicating the pet is current on its vaccinations, plastic bags, food, a

favorite toy, and clean-up supplies in the event of motion sickness. Pets that drink water from an unfamiliar area may experience stomach discomfort, so bring some water along as well.

When booking your trip, seek petfriendly hotels and accommodations.

Websites such as www.dogfriendly. com can provide a number of options.

At the hotel, use white noise to keep dogs from barking at every passerby outside the room. Exercise the pet before retiring for bed so that he or she is as calm as possible before sleep.

If your dog is unruly in an unfamiliar location, try offering a chew toy. The ASPCA says chewing and licking are

very soothing to dogs and may help them fall asleep.

One concern some pet owners have is a dog or cat who will not relieve himself in a place that is not familiar. Some dogs will hold it in, which can be uncomfortable and unhealthy. Bill Gardiner loves All-Weather Tires

Motoring TV’s Bill Gardiner is probably the best-known and most popular auto mechanic in Canada.

I met up with the likeable and down-to-earth celebrity wrench-puller for the first time at a Kal Tire store in Vancouver, a while ago, to talk about all-weather tires.

If you’re shopping for tires in January it’s probably because you’ve just realized how ineffective the current set on your car has become

in winter driving conditions.

Now you’re faced with a tire buying dilemma. All-season tires (a misleading name) generally don’t perform well when the thermometer dips below 7-degrees C and winter (snow) tires also perform far better on the white stuff. Then again, the worst of winter will be over in another month or two ... or three.

Many car owners are still not aware that there is another option and it’s called the all-weather tire. Essen-

tially an all-weather tire is a winter tire that can be driven right though the summer months, so you don’t have the added expense, hassle and storage issues of swapping tires seasonally. You could say, the all-weather tire fulfils the original promise of the all-season tire.

Roughly fifty per cent of Canadian car owners run the same tires all-year-round and don’t do the summer/ winter tire switchover, according to Gardiner. Economic and logistical rea-

sons, especially if you live in an urban area, are forcing more and more consumers to drive on the same set of tires in both summer and winter.

“I get that feedback from a lot of motorists,” said Gardiner. “They don’t like manhandling – tires are dirty and you have to put them in the car and then store them.

Some families have two or three cars, so that becomes a lot of tires to stack up.”

“Many people also buy a second set of steel rims for

their winter tires,’’ added Gardiner. “Now your car doesn’t look too attractive for five months of the year.

And with TPMS (tire pressure monitoring systems) if you don’t replicate that sensor on each wheel you lose an important safety feature. The other thing too, most tire shops have a huge spike in business in November and April, so you have to line-up with a gazillion other people.”

The all-weather tire is also a perfect tire for snowbirds, according to Gardiner. “A lot of them like to get home for Christmas. An all-weather tire performs well on hot-dry roads in those southern states and also on ice and snow when they come back to the frozen north.”

An all-weather will also come with the Rubber Association’s snow tire symbol (snowflake inside a mountain) designation on the tire’s sidewall, which is a winter driving requirement in Quebec and allseason tire does not have it.

An all-season tire is designed to provide optimal ride and wear characteristics, according to Gardiner. Some all-season tires that will provide over 140,000 km of tread wear, however, tires also have a “best before” life expectancy. “In my garage, we typically try to match our customers with a tire that will give them four or five years of good service, based on how much they drive,” said Gardiner.

The Nokian passenger tires that Gardiner highly recommends come

with 80,000 km or 100,000 km tread wear guarantees. They also come with a clever DSI (driving safety indicator) feature moulded into the tread that’s patented by Nokian. The largest number that’s still visible (see photo) is the tread depth remaining in millimetres.

When the snowflake disappears it’s no longer recommended for use as a winter tire.

There’s also a unique noise reduction feature on every Nokian passenger tire. The outboard tread grove has a dimpled “golf ball”

finish. On a golf ball, dimples control airflow over its surface so it can travel a longer distance. They also, however, offer a noise reduction side benefit that’s exploited by Nokian.

Nokian is a Finnish tire company that specializes in winter tires and operates the only permanent winter tire testing facility in the world.

It was the first tire maker to offer an all-weather tire in Canada and Kal Tire has an exclusive importation agreement with Nokian. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca
