You are never too young to hit the ice for a morning skate. Three year old Oscar Masse was out practicing his hockey skills Wednesday with his father, Justin. Oscar may be young but he’s already skating with other up-and-coming hockey stars in the community. The Masse’s weren’t the only ones taking advantage of the Castlegar Complex that morning. Senior’s floor curling was going on just outside the rink and a few skaters passed by to shoot the puck with little Oscar.

No support for access road

Council decides that Trail’s request is a ‘conflict of interest’ CHRIS STEDILE Castlegar News

Council has unanimously agreed that Trail’s request for support for a second access road to Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) is both premature and a conflict of interest.

Trail is requesting funding as part of the New Building Canada Plan and has asked for support from surrounding communities.

The City of Castlegar has denied Trail’s request to support a proposal to build a secondary access route to Kootenay Boundary regional hospital.

“The WKBRH Board is meeting within the next couple weeks to review the study that we provided in the fall about direction and where we want to go,” she explained.

“We submitted a study where we went to 30 different areas, municipalities, regional districts and villages that belonged to the West Kootenay Hospital Board and asked them what they thought acute services in the West Kootenays should be. We hired a consultant and he developed a proposal plan and the board will be meeting next week or the week after to discuss that plan.”

The main point the board will be going over is whether or not

they want to fund a feasibility study for a new hospital in the area.

When it comes to applying for funding Heaton-Sherstobitoff said, “It’s a cruel process, because you know there’s only so much money and every community in Canada is going to be vying for it.”

With each grant that gets approved the funding pool becomes smaller and the councillor said that the project they’re applying for is quite large.

“We don’t want anything to impede us from getting where we want our community to go and same with them,” she said.

Between February and March council will be presenting the project.

Tourism prospects continue to improve for Castlegar. In a meeting at the Quality Inn on Monday evening, local hoteliers, members of parliament and the Castlegar and District Tourism Committee shared their thoughts on tourism and the newly implemented room tax.

The room tax will be bringing in a significant chunk of money to the city. This money will then be allocated to advertising and various methods of drawing even more tourism into town.

Executive Director for the Chamber of Commerce, Tammy Verigin-Burk, has a clear path to follow after the meeting.

She said, “The next step for us is to re-engage and set forth with the hiring and policy and procedure of the strategic plan that will be rolling out in April. As well as hiring our part-time destination marketing coordinator.”

tenay Conservative Candidate, Marshall Neufeld was present to add to the discussion.

Neufeld explained, “We had the representatives of the four main hotels in Castlegar as well as people from the chamber. It was really exciting to see Tammy and all of her people be so excited about working regionally as the hotel tax has just been introduced. So obviously all the hotels here are working together.”

The municipal and regional district tax (room tax) is a tax of up to two per cent charged on sales of taxable accommodation in participating municipalities and regional districts in B.C. The tax assists municipalities, regional districts and other eligible entities in promoting tourism in their area and financing new tourist facilities or programs.

In an attempt to garner more recognition for Castlegar, Neufeld invited the chair of Parliamentary Tourism Caucus, Blake Richards.

Richards mentioned the meeting brought up many ways that

the federal government can help in building and growing tourism within the community and he is eager to explore them further.

“I heard a lot of great optimism in the room about the fact that there is a great opportunity for tourism here,” Richards said, “we’re always looking for ways that we can partner but now we have the largest infrastructure program in the history of Canada we just rolled out last year.”

He said new regional initiatives may arise from the New Building Canada Plan that was recently launched. Somewhat further down the road — in 2017 — is Canada’s 150th birthday.

“The opportunities that exist there for potential travel or tourism related initiatives, festivals, these kind of things are endless. So we’re encouraging the community to look at ways to help celebrate that and grow tourism in the region as a result.”

Extra tourism funding will be available in the year of 2017 and Verigin-Burk is looking to jump on that right away.

There was an air of excitement this week as the St. David’s Anglican and United Church thrift shop on Columbia Avenue reopened following two weeks of renovations.

A new carpet, additional shelving and a fresh coat of paint have transformed the shop into a brightly lit, spacious new shopping experience. Funds for the renovation came from shop sales over the last four years.

Chernoff was on hand to cut the ribbon and tour the shop, acknowledging its importance to those in our community who are looking for second hand, good quality items at reasonable prices.

“They did a lot of work in that building and it’s all neat and tidy,” the mayor said. “The ladies there have been working really hard as well as the other volunteers, it’s impressive to me.”

“The prices are right and they offered to sell me some clothes there, but they weren’t the right fit,” Chernoff laughed.

shop is busier than ever and they could really use any extra hands down there.

The thrift shop would like to offer a big thanks to all the volunteers and the business community who made the renovations possible.

Income from the thrift shop is split between the two churches and helps support the Food Bank and Drop In Centre, the Soup Kitchen, the Women’s Shelter, Hospice and other community groups as well as enabling the churches to respond to emergency appeals both at home and overseas.

Double edged sword

Canada may have invested beyond its means in an oil boom that has come to a crude halt. Sure, the cheaper pump price has a direct impact for consumers who will have more disposable income. But as a result are we spending this money on imported goods? If so, this may eventually lead to more of our hard earned dollars being shipped off shore in exchange for the perishing and disposable products we allow in.

In the short term, this drop in gas prices may directly be good for Castlegar consumer but why have prices for other goods and services not followed suit and also decreased? Or will they decrease and will that be the beginning of the deflation period for our country?

We have already seen the loonie shrink in value. Will

the cost of imported consumer goods increase as the dollar weakens?

With cheaper gas prices, will people use more of this fleeting resource? Will investment into renewable resources be crippled and take longer to develop? Will we become more reliant on oil as a result as this price crash?

Sure it is not all doom and gloom having a weaker dollar; we can market our destination to the U.S. who is just down the road but do we have the infrastructure and tourism product to take advantage of our weak loonie now on the volume required to sustain our shrinking disposal incomes?

If saving at the pump is really that appealing to us then why have we not become less dependent on our vehicles?

And the depression overwhelms you completely when you clear a pathway out to the paved road only to find a ridge of snow. Sadly, it was pushed there by the snow removal truck as it flashed by gaining momentum to clear the bus route all the way to the top of 24th.

This January’s snowfall left soft snow, and though it was deep, it was easy to remove from the driveway. That is, all except the end of the driveway where it was packed and heavy. In the past, that ridge of snow has been as solid as a cement barrier — almost impossible to remove.

I’ve been thinking about the snow at the end of my driveway as a metaphor for other situations in life. I reflected back on my days as a College instructor and how I enjoyed preparing activities

for class and then the fun of teaching.

That part was like snow-blowing soft snow. The tough part, of course, or the barrier at the end of all the teaching was the marking.

I managed to keep up with my marking, but how I hated the drudgery of this often left-brain activity. I would mark the papers and exams from the good students first and later wade through the work of weaker students. I likened this to my penchant for snowblowing the easiest parts of the end of the driveway first before I tackled the tough packed sections.

Because I’ve also spent a lot of time writing creatively, I recognize how the end of the driveway can appear daunting for the writer. It’s called writer’s block. days for the writer. An all-day task of completing a column, for example, can sometimes be done in less than an hour.

But get stuck or lose focus or begin to lack inspiration, and then the writing is difficult to do. In the days of writing by pen, writers would often sit for hours with a blank page of paper in front of them. Now writers stare at a blank screen. How to start?

Can I take these crappy thoughts and somehow turn them into vivid prose?

Can I actually get the words from my mind onto the page?

Strange, but the mind gravitates to easier tasks. Much daydreaming occurs, and if a writer has strict deadlines, many nightmares invade. However, once a new piece of decent writing is finished, it’s similar to having shoveled that last pile of snow and opened up the end of the driveway.

Our everyday lives are filled with incidents analogous to the packed snow at the end of the driveway. Before the holidays, university students flew home for Christmas and New Year holidays with family and friends. Magnificent parties happened, acquaintances were renewed, splendid dinners were consumed, and the outdoor lights were never better.

All of a sudden, a huge snow storm hit, dumping 34 centimeters of snow on the Columbia Valley, and the clouds remained shroud-like for days. Then the fog took over the valley like bad morning breath and shut down everything.

Where all had been pleasant and glorious, now those hoping for flights to Vancouver and elsewhere could go nowhere. It was similar to not being able to drive your car until the end of the driveway was cleared.

Nurses say no to smoking

Editor, the News; As nursing students, we are eager to bring attention to National Non-Smoking Week 2015. We support the Canadian Cancer Society BC and Yukon in encouraging British Columbians to know the risks of flavoured tobacco in an effort to reduce B.C.’s smoking rate from 13 per cent to nine per cent.

While B.C. has Canada’s lowest smoking rate, smoking is still the leading cause of death and disability in B.C.. It is the only legal product that kills one out of every two people when used directly as intended.

What is it going to take to bring our smoking rates down to single digits?

Be aware of the risk of flavoured tobacco products. Youth are especially susceptible to experiment with flavoured tobacco and almost half of B.C.’s youth smokers are using these products. These products carry the same health risks, and are just as addictive as regular tobacco. Additives reduce the harsh effects for youth who are experimenting with tobacco, making it easier for them to become addicted.

Cancer shouldn’t be available in strawberry.

Increase tobacco taxes. Research shows when the price of tobacco increases, rates of

smoking decrease. Increasing tobacco taxes can help bring down BC’s smoking rates.

Regulate e-cigarettes. As future health care professionals it is worrisome that the health effects of using e-cigarettes are unknown. Minimal research has been done in determining whether e-cigarettes are an effective or safe method in aiding people to quit smoking. Regulation is needed to prevent youth from using e-cigarettes and to help prevent the marketing of e-cigarettes from undermining advances in tobacco control.

Legislate smoke-free outdoor public places. Smoke-free parks, patios, and campuses support healthier communities and protect families from exposure. Make non-smoking the norm and create supportive environments for people who want to quit. No amount of second-hand smoke is safe.

As student nurses we think now is the time for the B.C. government to make a firm commitment to reduce smoking rates to single digits.

Opting out of smart meters Editor, The News; The evidence is in and smart meters have been thrown out of not only Saskatchewan but Australia and California as well. The places I have listed are just a few of the countries and areas that have done this.

There are many that have banned smart meters because of the acknowledged fire hazard and health risks this device introduces into your home.

Mr. Bennett himself, the minister of energy for B.C., has admitted there is a fire issue with these things, and indeed are being held accountable for fires in B.C. already as noted by CBC reports.

BC Hydro gives the opt out option of no device at all that comes with a 402 fee, which is an extortionist option to say the least, but in the end BC Hydro customers have more options than Fortis customers do. The third option given by BC Hydro being no device at all which is what we all deserve in light of the scathing reports by the World Health Organization.

They advise the outright banning of such devices based on fact and not made up and I used studies handed out by Fortis — which by the way flies in the face of the reality of the risk to homeowners in the Kootenays.

radio off in said device does nothing to curtail the risk of fire at all, and combined with the fact these devices can be turned on remotely I find alarming to say the least.

Why oh why would government allow a corporation to install these things that are a complete and present danger is only a mystery if you do not follow the money trail. It’s all about money and a huge cash grab and they do not give one damn about your house or your health. That much is clear.

According to the human rights charter in our constitution we have the right to refuse anything being forced upon us that has been proven to be harmful and I stand behind that as we all should.

Fortis BC installed a smart meter in my daughters home without the bill holder’s direct permission, and now as has been reported as a consequence by the W.H.O. she may be at risk of a miscarriage because of the smart meter’s constant barrage of microwaves.

I seriously recommend all citizens in Castlegar demand the same opt out clause that BC Hydro offers its customers which is option 3, no device at all.

CONCEPTION AND SMOKING: For some couples, getting pregnant can be a very difficult goal to achieve. So it’s important to know all the reasons why this goal is hindered. For normal women under the age of 27, the chances of getting pregnant on any given month is about 50%.

Of course the odds drop as age increases. Both men and women have a ticking age-related clock ticking away in their bodies. For women, the quantity of eggs drops with age and the men suffer from few and often less active sperm as they age. Smoking has been found to make a woman’s eggs less usable and may bring on menopause earlier which will reduce her fertile years. Conception rate can drop by as much as 40% in smokers as compared to nonsmokers. And if conception does occur in the smoker, the chances are greater for a low birth-weight baby and also a greater chance of a miscarriage. Men who smoked a minimum of one pack of cigarettes per day had sperm that were less motile and had more DNA damage. And there were also less of them. Pharmacists can be helpful to their young married couples trying to have a child.

If they’re smokers, encourage them to quit. Besides increasing their chances of having a healthy child, smoking cessation will give them and their child a lifetime of better health.

Taking the leap into voluntourism

Castlegar residents lend a hand overseas Kim Gatenby and her daughter Megan, of Castlegar, have just returned from working on a Habitat for Humanity house build in Costa Rica.

They joined the Canadian house building team through the Global Village department of Habitat Canada.

They decided to go on a volunteering holiday that would benefit others while offering the appeal of adventure.

Kim said it was everything they hoped for.

“It was amazing!”

This is their account:

The Gatenbys of Castlegar have returned from a recent trip to Costa Rica. Their time spent abroad was used for house building and helping the local communities. hot and humid.

“The building style was very basic but quick and not too labour intensive. Most of our time was spent digging holes for the concrete footings and the concrete slab system, the septic tank and drainage field and then wheel-barrelling gravel.

“It was fun even though we worked hard. Early on, there was jovial camaraderie among the team members and the family, always helping in some way; we’re so happy we were there.

“Our team aged from 17 to 70 came together with great positive energy. We were able to cope with the heat because cool drinking water was always available, shade was nearby and the family, especially the abuela, was a joy to be around!”

One of Kim’s favourite parts of the trip was the social and cultural exchange with the family and making newfound friends.

One night there was a soccer game, Canada vs. Costa Rica.

“They kicked our butts! It was so much fun and lots of laughter,”

said Kim. “We enjoyed dance lessons from the locals.” Megan loved the time they went up with the family to explore a beautiful natural hot springs in the hills.

They were the only ones there in the bush.

During her interview with the team leader pre-trip, he had said it would be a life changing experience. Kim verifies, “He was so right!”

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization, which helps to build homes for low income families. The family has 10 years to pay back an interest free loan.

Through regular bank loans these families would not be able to afford the interest rates. The mission of Habitat Canada is to enable families to live in a safe and decent home and enable homeownership.

Bobcat attacks local pets Officers assure this is not a common occurrence CHRIS STEDILE Castlegar News

After two separate bobcat attacks Wednesday (Jan. 14) evening, pet owners are advised to keep a close watch on their companions when letting them outside.

Bobcats are not known to engage humans but house pets are a different story.

Between 5:30 and 6 p.m. residents living across the way from Tim Horton’s in Castlegar found a bobcat on their property.

The large feline was attacking their pet cat. The cat’s owner swiftly fended off the bobcat but the pet did eventually succumb to its injuries.

Another bobcat attack was spotted at 11:30 p.m. on Greystone Place. This time a dog was the victim.

The animal has not succumbed to any injuries and is currently doing fine.

Whether these two attacks were from the same bobcat could not be confirmed.

Conservation Officers did set up a live trap but found nothing after several days.

At least one bobcat was on the prowl in Castlegar last week. A local cat and dog were attacked.

The officer said bobcats don’t target pets but things such as

birdfeeders can draw the animals in. If a pet happens to be nearby, the bobcat doesn’t know any different and may attack. “Bobcats are not a safety issue to the general public,” he said.

Nathan Heddle

“I survived my first two hot yoga sessions, I was nervous and curious going into my first class. The feeling you get afterwards is amazing, you feel detoxed, rejuvenated, but only if you hydrated yourself enough because you sure sweat it out!” Nathan says of his first week.

Nathan has committed to hot yoga twice a week as well as playing hockey twice weekly. He also plans to find time to go to the gym one or two times a week for additional cardio and strength training workouts when possible.

Gabrielle also notes that they have discussed the challenges of being a busy parent and eating well. Nathan has made it a goal to avoid unhealthy habits such as late night snacking and minimize alcohol and sugar consumption. Nathan added, “Some of the hardest things for me to do are drinking lots of water, not drinking beer and bad foods, but on the upside after two classes feeling a bit more flexible with a little bit more energy and down a few pounds I’m feeling happy!”

Nathan Heddle has been teamed up with Gabrielle Jangula at Viva Hot Yoga for this year’s Get Fit Challenge.

Gabrielle says that Nathan has been very enthusiastic about his six weeks of yoga training. “He works hard, listens well and always has a smile after class. A sweaty smile that is!” she added.

Marilyn says that it has been a very long time since she has done much more than walking for fitness so she was excited and nervous to begin training with Spencer. She is training with Spencer three times a week, and going to the gym on the days in between.

“Boy, am I out of shape! My legs were shaky after the first training session, and were sore for a couple days after,” she says. “I am happy to say that I am not that sore anymore, and feel stronger already. I know it is a process, but I am determined. I am also watching my calories, and drinking more water. So far, so good!”

Spencer adds that the first week has been great. He is very impressed and proud of how she has started the journey to better health.

“She has come to the gym five of the last five days, which is awesome!” he said. “We are easing her into the weights and cardio, three days of weights and the other two are cardio. She is also eating more healthy.”

Keep your tail on the trail Big blue bird needs a home With all the natural beauty surrounding Castlegar, it’s easy to look past the special places within the city limits. One such place is the Waldie Island Heron Reserve. The island is situated in the Columbia River at the north end of town, between the Brilliant and the CPR bridges.

As one of the only tree covered islands in the area, Waldie provides valuable habitat for nearly 150 wildlife species.

The two-acre island was purchased by the Nature Trust of British Columbia and partners in 1996.

The island and surrounding area are a small but important wetland complex that provides important winter refuge, forage, and potential breeding grounds for many species.

There are at least 10 provincially listed wildlife species that use the area, species that require special conservation atten-

tion. In B.C., these wildlife species are classified as either endangered or of special concern.

The Great Blue Heron is one of those locally listed, and identified as of special concern (blue listed).

The heron is easily recognizable when in flight by its long s-shaped neck, blue grey plumage and deep slow wing beat.

They can be found along most local rivers feeding in shallow water where they patiently stalk fish and other small aquatic prey.

Waldie Island is an important habitat in the winter for these birds. Herons are mostly migratory and fly as far as South America for the winter. Some herons don’t migrate as long as they can access the necessary resources locally.

During the cool winter months, the channel between Waldie and the main shoreline dries up.

This allows access to the island for offleash dogs who are a potential problem.

Although signage instructs users to keep their dogs leashed, some trail users do not comply. When the water is low and the island is “available,” both people and dogs can be seen off of the designated trails and wading across the narrow channel to access Waldie island.

Herons are a very sensitive species.

Even a seemingly harmless walk along the shoreline beaches, too close to their roosts, often cause them enough distress to leave the island in an attempt to find another secluded

habitat.

For the heron, this can be a difficult task in the winter. Finding a new roost site will expend an important amount of energy in herons, energy they can ill afford to waste.

Castlegar is home to a special niche habitat which can be respectfully utilized and enjoyed by both our feathered, two legged, and four legged friends. Walking the Waldie Island trail is a great way to take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. However, the trail was built to allow us limited access to this sensitive place in order to maintain and appreciate it.

We can be respectful by keeping ourselves and our pets on the trails provided.

All of us have committed sins that are more than insignificant mistakes. We all appreciate compassion but we also understand the need for justice, espe-

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” – Romans 3:23 The feeling of forgiveness is a wonderful thing. I remember as a small child doing something wrong or breaking something that I knew was very important to my parents. Sometimes I would get into these situation without thinking or just from my inherent curiosity, but once I realized what I had done a great dread came over me. When my mom or dad discovered my infraction, fear would grip my young heart.

On occasion, when I would sincerely apologize, sometimes with tears, they would take pity on me and rather than the angry wrath I expected, there was tender forgiveness.

What a great sense of being loved this brought. They saw my bad side, they learned my faults, but would love me and forgive me anyway. This gave me comforting assurance that my parent’s love was greater than my faults.

As I grew older, that wonderful feeling of forgiveness was felt less and less. It was not that I was less guilty of wrong doing. In fact, I committed more evils in my teen years than as a child. Neither was it that my parents had become hard hearted.

The truth is, I learned to justify my faults.

Although I hate to admit it, I grew less concerned of my parent’s feelings. Rather than feel the guilt, or confess my wrong, I would hide it from them.

When that was impossible, I would make excuses or argue that I had the right to do as I pleased and at times I would lie.

As a young adult I had that great and wonderful feeling of forgiveness again. This time that forgiveness came from the One against whom I had

Solid Waste Management Survey The Future of Solid Waste Handling and Recycling in Castlegar The City of Castlegar is a small City with Big Heart and Big Ideas. The City has a vision of creating an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable Solid Waste and Recycling program that encourages waste reduction and maximizes recycling.

What is Waste Reduction & How Is It Achieved? – Waste Reduction is a system of recycling to reduce the amount of garbage that is simply thrown into the landfill. By stripping out recyclables, food compost, pet waste and yard waste a household can dramatically reduce the amount of garbage that is set at the curb each week. In fact, in some areas around the world, waste reduction/diversion programs have been so successful that they have resulted in zero waste being generated from homes – no garbage!

Why Change? – The City of Castlegar currently spends around $400,000 per year on recycling, waste collection, garbage landfill tipping fees, yard waste collection and composting.

In addition, the City’s Official Community Plan (http://www.castlegar.ca/pdfs/OCP_Bylaw_1150.pdf) identified the need to strive for a Zero Waste goal. The City’s current waste reduction rate sits at 27% and Council has set a short term goal of increasing that to 50% within the next five years. Currently only 45% of residents participate in the recycling program and the City has set the goal of increasing that to 75% participation.

A progressive waste diversion and recycling program is a major cornerstone of a healthy, sustainable community.

Margaret January 21, 1921 – January 8, 2015 Margaret was born in Woking, Surrey, England and grew up helping her family run several estate farms.

She was the 2nd youngest of five children, who are predeceased. At 19, she joined the Women’s ATS Army Corp at the outbreak of WWII. It was during this time that she met her husband to be, Edgar Charles (Terry) Whitelock. In 1946, she and her family of two children came to Canada where she settled in the Kootenays, first in Nelson, BC where she had relatives, then later she moved to Castlegar, BC. where she became involved in “Little Theatre” and won several awards for acting. After, her husband died in 1974, she moved to Penticton, BC and started working for a Veterinarian where she could express her love for animals and in particular dogs. Margaret was a very creative person, and enjoyed writing poetry, painting pictures, sewing and gardening.

She passed her wonderful skills on to her daughters, who appreciate them to this day. Later on, she volunteered at the Penticton Art Gallery and enjoyed the many activities of the art community. Her son Tony Whitelock passed away in July of 2012. She is survived by two daughters, Carollyne and Kim and a Grandson Dennis Whitelock. Special thanks to the staff of The Village By The Station in Penticton for their excellent care and to Trish and Rebecca, care workers, for their special care during the last few months of Margaret’s life.

Tolko is interested in seeking individual proposals for a non-replaceable Log Hauling Contract with an annual volume of up to 300,000 tonnes. The work will be based out of Vernon, BC with the majority of the work taking place within the Southern Interior of BC. Prior to obtaining a Request for Proposal (RFP) package, contractors must provide a prospectus with the following information: 1. Company name and contact information, including a phone number and an email address.

2. Brief description of your company and services offered.

3. Previous work history with dates that would pertain to this RFP. Once we have received your prospectus, a package will be sent to you with instructions on how to submit a complete proposal. Melvin Walter Miller April 7th, 1952 January 17th, 2015

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Melvin Walter Miller, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Born in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Mel worked at the Zelstoff mill for 40 years until his retirement in 2013. Mel loved hunting, camping and just being outside, but the most important thing was being with his family. Mel enjoyed helping his wife and her dragon boat team, The Kootenay Robusters, and helping out wherever he was needed. He leaves behind his wife of 32 years Connie, one son and two daughters, Christopher, Cyndel (Trevor), Charmaine (Ryan) and grandson Daniel, the light of his life. Predeceased by his father, Walter, his mother Elsie resides still in Trail. He also leaves behind sister Maryanne (Cal), and brothers Merle (Gaye), Dale (Debbie), and Michael (Monika), and many nieces and nephews. The family extends a special thank you to the doctors and staff at the KBRH and all family and friends that helped. There will be no service held, by request.

Fernando Francisco DaMota Born May 27, 1931 and passed away, peacefully on January 11, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. Fernando was born in Livramento, Sao Miguel Acores to Joao and Teresa daMota. He grew up in Sao Rocque where he met the love of his life Lidia DeFrias. In 1969 they immigrated to Trail with their three children. Fernando was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. His family was his life and there was no greater joy for him than being surrounded by his loved ones.

Fernando was predeceased by his parents, Joao and Teresa daMota, his wife Lidia of 49 years, their three infant children, his son in law Raimundo Carreiro, his brother Valdemar Mota, his brothers in law, Humberto and Joao, his sisters in law Belmira, Virgolina, Maria da Luz and their spouses. He is survived by his children John (Christine) Mota, Adriana (Raimundo) Carreiro and Bill (Aneeda) Mota. His grandchildren Kathy (Dave) Mota, Teresa (Nelson) Sousa, Stephen (Jessica) Mota, Selena Taylor, Raymond Carreiro, Jesse, Teagan and Reece Mota. His great grandchildren Jake DaRosa, Kaiden and Rylan Sousa, Jayden and Aaliyah Mota, Alivia and Paisley Taylor. His sister Zelia DeOliveira, sister in law Maria Mota and many nieces and nephews Fernando worked at the sawmill in Castlegar for 25 years. He was a proud member of the St. Rita’s Catholic Church and the Portuguese Social Centre. Apart from his family some of his other great passions were making his home made wine, assisting others with their building projects and most of all, his bountiful garden which he was known for his great produce of which he shared with his family and friends.

As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the St. Rita Church building fund, 513 7th Ave, Castlegar, BC V1N 1R3 , BC Cancer Society or a charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements were in care of Castlegar Funeral Chapel.

DAVIS, DOUG Doug Davis passed away January 5 , 2015 at the age of 74 with his wife Mary and son Bruce by his side.

Doug is survived by his wife Mary , son Bruce (Jessica ) grandchildren Ava and Daxton, sister Noella (Dan ) and family , brother Robert (Susie) and family as well as many cousins, nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents and sister Donna.

Doug spent many years working as a heavy duty mechanic, Doug traveled to all parts of British Columbia and also spent some time working in West Africa. In the last few years Doug very much enjoyed his family ,watching hockey games and coffee with friends.

At Dougs request cremation has taken place.

Dougs final resting place will be carried out in a private ceremony with his family. As an expression of sympathy donations can be made to the charity of your choice.

James (Jim) Andrew Hamilton Sadly the family of James (Jim) Hamilton, of Castlegar, wishes to announce his passing at Talarico Place Care Centre on January 1, 2015 blessed with 72 years of life.

Jim was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on April 28, 1942 to parents Florence and Wankie Hamilton. He was raised and went to school in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. In 1960, he graduated from Weyburn Collegiate and then went to welding school and also acquired a private pilot’s licence.

In 1994, Jim moved to Armstrong, BC where he drove and owned trucks for the majority of his life.

He met the love of his life and his soulmate, April Dawn Stagg and they moved to the Kootenays. They both worked in Castlegar and spent their leisure time camping, fishing and making numerous trips to Hawaii and Mexico.

Fishing and hunting were Jim’s main hobbies.

Jim leaves to mourn his loss his wife April Stagg, of Castlegar, BC; his sons Terry (Cindee) and Tyler of Vernon, BC; his daughters Shelley Hamilton (Sean) of Vernon, BC and Sheila Hamilton of Armstrong, BC; 4 grandchildren Mitchell, Emiley, Issac and Jake; his sister Kathing (Brian) Cutting of Salmon Arm, BC and several nieces and nephews.

February 26, 1932 – July 6, 2014 It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden, unexpected loss of our mother and Nana, Thelma Milliard, shortly after midnight on July 6, 2014 at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

Mom was a strong and determined woman who had twice beaten cancer in her lifetime. We firmly believed she would be with us for many more years. Mom left this world surrounded by family who rushed to be by her side. A private family viewing was held at Telford’s Chapel, Ladysmith, B.C. on July 8, 2014.

Thelma was predeceased by her devoted husband of 60 years, Bud Milliard, in December 2013; her parents John and Harriet Cronk, 6 brothers and sisters, as well as many other extended family members.

Left to mourn her passing are her children, Janet (Brian) McQuarrie, Gerry (Kathy Gall) Milliard, Deb Milliard-Nieman, and Jamie (Phil) Gensey; grandchildren and great-grandchildren – Ryann (Matt) McQuarrie-Salik, Ashton, Valley and Sloane; Scott (Amanda) Nieman and Linus; Cassandra (Jon Tchao) Nieman, Cadence and Jacob; and Chris, Tim and Gloria Gensey; as well as 5 sisters – Margaret Utigard, Irene Balcaen, Shirley Mennie, Alice Paul and Veda Robinson; plus numerous nieces and nephews.

Born the ninth of twelve children in Lintlaw, Sask., Thelma grew up in Invermay, Sask. and then Reston, Man. where she lived until moving to Kenora, Ont. at 17. While working in Kenora she met Bud and many lifelong friends. After their marriage in 1953, Thelma and Bud lived in Victoria while Bud was in the Navy. Here she added to her list of friends. In 1956 they returned to Kenora before moving the family to Castlegar, B.C. in 1964. Thelma spent most of her working life in retail, as a cashier, salesclerk and then as a store manager. She finished her career as a loans officer for the Kootenay Savings Credit Union. Always social, she took an interest in people’s lives and built strong relationships. In 1993 Mom and Dad moved to Reston, Man. to be closer to extended family, but returned to B.C. once again in 2006 and settled in Nanaimo.

Mom was a going concern and never sat still for long.

Engaged and engaging, she stood behind the truth of her convictions. She loved a good joke even though she could seldom remember a punchline and would laugh until tears ran down her face. Always dynamic, after retirement she focused this energy on family which she valued above all else. Proud, protective and private, she was the touchstone who kept everyone connected.

She never missed a birthday or anniversary, put others’ needs ahead of her own, and offered practical, no nonsense advice. Not one for public displays of emotion, Mom believed that actions spoke louder than words. She took pride in our accomplishments, shared in our happiness, and worried about everyone.

Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren expanded the circle of love and always kept her on her toes. As keeper of the family history, she had many more stories to tell.

Gone too soon and always in our hearts.

Arrangements were in care of Castlegar Funeral Chapel.

Mom, we love and miss you more than you could ever know.

I would like to thank my very special friend/sister Cheryl Dahl. Also, a special thank you to Karen Bredt for helping Jim and myself during this hard time and as well as Colette Pankoff for being there for Jim and I and helping me stay strong.

When Alex Peacemaker heard the news that musician Pete Seeger had passed away on January 27, 2014, he was surprised to find himself weeping.

“When I heard the news I was just crying. I felt like ‘all right, something’s going on here.’ It impacted me. I think it was the mark of a great person passing,” he said.

Memorial concerts were being held worldwide, including one by Bruce Springsteen, and Peacemaker was inspired to hold one in the Kootenays. Now, just over a year after Seeger’s passing, Peacemaker’s plans have come to fruition.

A memorial concert featuring local musicians Kenny Conrad, Olin McKay, Dan Perrault and many others will be held at the Junction Church on Jan. 31.

“That bill is some of the cream of the crop of our local musicians,” said Peacemaker.

When he initially set out to get momentum for the concert going, he found some younger people in the community didn’t recognize Seeger’s name.

“They would say ‘do you mean Bob Seeger?

Is Pete Seeger his son?’ But even if they don’t really know the name, those songs are registered on their subconscious,” he said.

“Just starting singing This Land is Your Land or If I Had a Hammer and they’ll go ‘oh yeah, I

know that song’.”

Peacemaker said one of the most exciting things about Seeger’s music was his willingness to cross language borders.

“Guantanemera, a lot of people don’t know this, is the unofficial anthem of Cuba. He translated it into English and introduced it to the English-speaking world.” Another song, Wimoweh (The Lion Sleeps Tonight), was originally written by African tribesman.

Seeger was also famous for leading sing-alongs in the African griot tradition, and Peacemaker said they’ll make sure to give audience members plenty of opportunities to join in throughout the concert.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the International Justice Mission (IJM), an organization devoted to fighting modern day slavery.

“There are up to 30 million slaves in the world today,” said Dean Siminoff, who has worked with IJM through his martial arts initiative Breaking Boards, Breaking Chains.

“There are actually more slaves today than when we think of as the slave days. It’s unbelievable, but somehow it flies under the radar.”

Siminoff said justice is desperately needed, especially in the cases of sex slavery.
