The list of housekeeping duties got a little dirty at Trail council Wednesday night.

While the annual garbage, sewer and water bylaws were adopted without waves, the third item on the table certainly didn't go off without a hitch.

Trail Mayor Mike Martin proposed a change to the council procedure bylaw last month when he created the deputy mayor position – a seat that Coun. Kevin Jolly was appointed to for one year.

Traditionally, Trail councillors serve as acting mayor on a rotating basis when the mayor is absent, so the bylaw amendment was up for at the award winning adoption following three readings made during Columbia River Hotel Dec. 15 council.

He likened the change to George Orwell's novel, “Animal Farm,” saying “all animals are equal but the story ends up being that some animals are more equal than others.”

Council addresses social media policy

The guideline follows Trail council's stamp on a social media policy last month that delegates city news postings to Communications Officer Andrea Jolly.

However, the recommen-

dation went one step further, citing that social media profiles and websites representing members of council will not act as official information platforms on behalf of the city.

Councillor questions appointments

FROM PAGE 1 “Secondly this information was sent out to council on Dec. 10...describing all the councillor appointments..and at no point did I get any feedback between that time and tonight regarding this issue.”

Martin described his early tenure as general manager at Teck Trail Operations, when he was given a tour of the city, including Trail’s vast public works department.

“I was amazed at the infrastructure that we have and carry the responsibility for in the City of Trail,” explained Martin. “Which further substantiates what I was considering.

“The deputy mayor must be fully informed and able to take full control of the mayor’s duty at any time.”

Martin maintains his concern wasn’t based on who would handle committee meetings in his absence, rather the deputy mayor appointee must be ready without hesitation, to step up in potentially difficult situations.

“My concern is that if we have a disastrous event that occurs in the city, how are we going to manage that and who has the where-with-all to do it. One of my responsibilities to the City of Trail is continuity in leadership to deal with such a situation.”

Coun. Kevin Jolly has experience and carries the Protective Services portfolio, he added. “So in my view, that was a good place to start to ensure that continuity.”

Cacchioni countered that his concern is that the council appoint-

ments are a “top down” operation.

“This is a complete change in governance and I believe you have created a division in council, so I am voting against it (deputy mayor),” Cacchioni added.

David Perehudoff, Trail’s chief administrative officer, then clarified the bylaw amendment to council.

“Councillor Cacchioni is not accurate,” he explained.

“Council governance is not changing, every member of council still has one vote. It’s just the context of these positions and how you personally view them” he noted.

“But there is definitely no change in respect to governance and how the city will be operating.”

Coun. Santori was up next, saying the deputy mayor position isn’t an issue of equality and such decisions are incumbent upon the mayor.

“We have six councillors and one mayor,” said Santori. “We don’t have seven councillors. There are certain expectations that the public demands of a mayor that is different than expectations of councillors – and that is to lead. It’s incumbent that Mayor Martin lead and show direction.”

Coun. Carol Dobie had the last word before the council procedure bylaw was adopted with only Cacchioni voting against.

“It seems to me that you were very clear that this was going to be a one-year appointment,” said Dobie.

“And that you would be more than willing to listen to the aspirations of other councillors at the end of the year.”

Police warn of phone scams

Submitted On Jan. 5, a Castlegar restaurant owner called police to report that he had been contacted about his “BC Hydro Power “bill and the fact that it was overdue in the amount of $1482.62 and that if it was not paid in the next 30 minutes then the power to the business would be cut off.

The restaurant owner called the toll free number provided and asked how he could pay this amount in which he was told that he needed to go to Safeway and purchase cash gift cards and then call them

back with the information contained on the cards.

Should anyone receive a call from someone representing BC Hydro and they doubt the authenticity of the call, they should hang up and call back BC Hydro at 1-800224-9376.

If an account is in arrears, BC Hydro will send several notices through the mail asking for payment or use an automated dialer to remind customers to make a payment before their electricity supply is impacted. In this incident, the restaurant owner was not

fooled by the scam.

Trail RCMP want to advise the public of a fraud / scam being reported in the area.

A caller reportedly from a company called “Seniors Winners Circle “ tells you that you won a substantial amount of money but need you to send them a deposit to release the funds. Police want to warn the public that this is a fraud scam.

You do not need to pay any tax or fee to claim a legitimate prize.

Report all scams to the RCMP and by calling the Canadian AntiFraud Center at 1-888495-8501.

“But make the caveat that it was in your opinion.”

The city’s policy is a forward thinking approach to what can happen on social media sites, according to David Perehudoff, Trail’s chief administrative officer.

“I think sometimes it’s good to be proactive rather than reactive,” he said. “And anticipate things that can occur on social media, like lawsuits.

The growth in the city’s Facebook page and Twitter account in just one year, led city staff to recommend principals for providing accurate information and positive engagement to its thousand-plus followers.

“The intent behind the revised social media policy is to ensure constituents know that unless councillors are forwarding information on their respective social media sites from the communication sites of the City of Trail,” explained Trail Mayor Mike Martin. “Then the information or commentary on City of Trail business is in the opinion of the individual councillor.”

U.S. retailer Target is abandoning its short-lived foray into Canada.

The company says it will close all 133 Canadian stores, including 19 in B.C.. It

employs 17,600 people in Canada and the closures could throw thousands out of work in this province.

Target chairman CEO Brian Cornell said there was no realistic scenario for the money-losing

Canadian arm to reach profitability until at least 2021.

It was granted protection from its creditors in Ontario Supreme Court Thursday.

“There is no doubt that the next several weeks will be difficult, but we will make every effort to handle our exit in an appropriate and orderly way.”

The American retail giant launched its Canadian expansion in 2013, buying up former Zellers locations and arranging grocery stock through Sobey’s.

SFU business and marketing professor Lindsay Meredith said Target’s invasion of Canada was misguided from the start.

It launched with too many stores at once, he said, and it immediately turned off Canadians savvy to lower U.S. pricing when it instead charged prices in line with Canadian retailers.

“That was exactly what Canadians did not want to hear,” Meredith said.

When stores opened they were missing some of the U.S. brands in home decor

and fashion shoppers wanted, he added.

Further blows that entrenched the retailer as a “screw-up” in Canadian minds included a massive data breach at the U.S. parent and recurring problems with empty store shelves.

“Empty shelves is a retailer’s kiss of death,” he said.

The latest challenge for Target has been the dive in the loonie to 84 cents U.S., which has left the company bridging a growing gap between what it pays for stock in the U.S. and what it sells it for in Canada.

But Meredith said he was surprised Target opted for a complete Canadian pull-out, coupled with creditor protection, rather than what he calls a “hedge hog defence” of retrenching to a small number of more profitable stores in key markets.

Big winners from Target’s demise will be established retail and grocery chains like Wal-Mart, Loblaws,

Canadian Tire and even Sport Chek, Meredith predicted.

“All these guys will be happy – they just got rid of a major competitor that could have hurt them.”

He expects the stores will be sold piecemeal to multiple buyers “who will bite off a piece of the whale carcass” rather than to one replacement chain.

Other retailers have also struggled lately, including Sears, and fashion outlets including Mexx, Jacob and Smart Set also intend to close.

But Meredith said Target’s withdrawal will send a particularly strong warning to other U.S. retailers considering Canadian expansion, such as Nordstrom’s.

United Food and Commercial Workers local 1518 spokesman Jason Mann said Target’s failure to hire former Zellers workers meant it lacked staff experience to make the operation work.

Hunting wolves to help save caribou THE CANADIAN PRESS VANCOUVER - The British Columbia government plans to hunt as many as 184 wolves in an attempt to save five dwindling caribou herds.

There are just 18 South

Selkirk caribou left, down from 46 animals in 2009, and the government says evidence points to wolves being the leading cause of the deaths.

The province says hunting and trapping the wolves hasn’t

worked and that method may even split up the packs and lead to more caribou being killed.

Instead, ministry staff will hunt two dozen wolves in the south Selkirk area.

Critics pan paltry Flu vaccine offers modest protection this year spending for flag’s 50th birthday

THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - The federal government has allotted $50,000 for celebrations for the upcoming 50th birthday of the iconic Maple Leaf flag.

That’s compared to almost $4 million for a campaign marking the 200th anniversary of Sir John A. Macdonald’s birth, and $5.2 million spent on the bicentennial of the War of 1812.

Canadian Heritage said Thursday that the $50,000 includes funds for promotional material, a photo exhibit during Ottawa’s upcoming Winterlude festivities.

By way of contrast, the government announced earlier this week it will spend $1.5 million on a cross-country project to raise awareness about the Holodomor, a statesponsored famine in Ukraine in 1932-33 in which millions starved while resisting Soviet collectivist policies.

The flag - the brainchild of Liberal prime minister Lester B. Pearson - turns 50 on Feb. 15. Heritage Minister Shelly Glover wasn’t available to comment on complaints from flag historians earlier this week that the government is paying the Maple Leaf short shrift compared with other key milestones in Canadian history.

Dip in restricted thermal pool proves costly THE CANADIAN PRESS CANMORE, Alta. - A judge has fined a man $4,500 for taking a dip in a thermal pool that is home to a type of endangered snail in Banff National Park.

Bailey Thomas Townsend, 27, pleaded guilty Wednesday in a Canmore, Alta., court to entering a restricted area under the Canada National Parks Act and damaging critical habitat under the Species at Risk Act. He was arrested in November after he was caught bathing at the Cave and Basin National Historic Site.

The site is the only place where the Banff springs snail is found.

Crown prosecutor Adam Zelmer said Townsend had earlier been warned by Parks Canada staff not to go into the pool, but did so anyway.

Court heard he was drunk and smoking a cigar while in the water.

Zelmer said protected sites such as the thermal pool “have been designated pro-

tected to help ensure the unique life forms which reside there do not disappear from the planet.”

The snail was designated as threatened in 1997 and, three years later, was redesignated as endangered.

THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - This year’s flu vaccine is offering limited protection in the United States against the virus responsible for a major wave of illness currently crashing over North America, a new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control suggests.

A corresponding assessment of how effective the vaccine is in Canada this winter is still in the works.

But there is good reason to believe the Canadian estimates will be at least as bad when they are published, probably later this month, experts say.

The study calculated how much protection the vaccine offered against getting sick enough to require medical care. (Most people who catch the flu tough it out without seeing a doctor, making them impossible to study.)

“We do need a better vaccine. We know that. But it’s not zero. And this disease can be so severe that people should take whatever protection they can get.”

The study was published Thursday in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, a rapid-release journal published by the CDC. Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Diseases Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, said the poor performance of this year’s vaccine is further proof a better influenza vaccine is needed.

“This should be another clarion call for why we need new and better flu vaccines.

It found that so far this year the vaccine is, on average, lowering that risk by 23 per cent, across all age groups and all the types of circulating flu viruses.

When the scientists look specifically at H3N2 viruses - far and away the most dominant virus type so far this winter - the protection was 22 per cent.

That’s not spectacular, but when the data were broken down by age groups, the picture was worse.

The study suggested the vaccine is cutting the risk for children aged six months to 17 years of age by 26 per cent. But for adults 18 to 49, the protection was only 12 per cent and for adults 50 and older, it was 14 per cent.

“It is a disappointing result,” said Dr. Edward Belongia, an influenza expert at Marshfield Clinic Research

“We need all the information we can obtain before finalizing our decisions.”

He says while low oil prices benefit consumers at the pump, they hurt the bottom line of oil companies, which leads to decreased investment and less employment.

He says that in turn reduces tax revenue both provincially and federally.

“The impact of lower oil prices on the Canadian economy is complex and creates both benefits and

harm.”

Oliver points out there is no consensus on how low oil prices will fall or how long they will stay there.

The last federal budget was released in mid-February 2014, while the budget in 2013 came out that March.

Oil prices are hovering around US$45 a barrel - a steep drop from the US$100 oil was bringing in last summer.

Oliver is still promising a balanced budget with no tax increases and a focus on job creation.

The low level of protection is being attributed to the fact that most of the H3N2 viruses in circulation are not a good match for the one in this year’s vaccine.

Because flu vaccine takes months to make, experts select the strains for the following winter’s shot in February each year. If a virus mutates after production starts, sub-optimal protection can result.

The CDC report said that about two-thirds of the H3N2 viruses seen this year in the U.S. were not well matched to the vaccine virus.

“It’s a pretty unusual year when we get this much drift in the predominant virus and therefore this low a vaccine effectiveness,” said Dr. Joseph Bresee, head of the epidemiology and prevention branch of CDC’s Influenza Division.

t sometimes seems people in the mining and fossil fuel industries – along with their government promoters – don’t believe in the future.

What else could explain the mad rush to extract and use up the Earth’s resources as quickly and wastefully as possible?

Global mining production, including fossil fuels, has almost doubled since 1984, from just over ninebillion tonnes to almost 17-billion in 2012, with the greatest increases over the past 10 years.

It’s partly to meet rising demand from expanding human populations and supply the cycle of consumerism that fuels the global economy through planned obsolescence, marketing unnecessary products and wasteful technologies. And, as the British Geological Survey notes, “It may be uncomfortable to acknowledge, but wars have been the drivers for many of mankind’s technological developments. Such technologies depend on secure supplies of numerous mineral commodities for which demand inevitably escalates in times of war.”

Mining is important to

human well-being, but the current economic system means it’s often aimed at maximizing profit with little regard for people or the environment.

It’s one area where Canadians can make a difference. Canada is a global leader in mining, especially in Latin America. According to the Mining Association of Canada, “Almost 60 per cent of the world’s public mining companies are listed on the TSX and TSXVenture Exchanges, and 70 per cent of the equity capital raised globally for mining companies is raised on these exchanges.” The association adds, “Canadian-headquartered mining companies accounted for nearly 37 per cent of budgeted worldwide exploration expenditures in 2012.” Canada has also tied foreign aid to support for mining interests.

Canadian mining companies haven’t always had a great record for environmental and social responsibility in communities where they operate – but public scrutiny and pressure may be helping to change that. In the face of criticism, industry leaders insist practices are improving. “The Canadian

mining industry, and certainly what our members are doing now, is much, much different now than what it was 20, 25 years ago,” Canadian Mining Association president and CEO Pierre Gratton told Global News in response to a critical Council on Hemispheric Affairs article.

According to the June 2014 article, “Large-scale Canadian mining companies, and the Canadian government that oversees such commercial ventures, have failed to adhere to reliable standards of international law, which assert that home states are responsible for the actions of their citizens abroad.” The article points to evidence that Canadian mining corporations have often operated with little regard for nature

reserves and protected areas, and have depleted scarce water supplies, neglected indigenous rights and disrupted communities and created health problems through air, water and land pollution. “Each year, a number of protestors who raise concerns against mining activities are seriously injured, persecuted, or even killed.”

That appears to be the case at a gold- and silver-mining operation in Guatemala run by a subsidiary of Canada’s Goldcorp. According to the Guardian, it’s drawn numerous local complaints for “intimidation, threats, social division, violence, bribery and corruption of local authorities, destruction and contamination of water sources, livestock dying, houses shaking, cracked walls, the criminalization of protest, forest cleared, and appalling health impacts such as malnutrition and skin diseases.” An indigenous man who spoke against the mine was beaten and burned alive by hooded men who first questioned him about antimining activities. Goldcorp has denied the allegations.

In the past, Canadian companies haven’t been

held responsible for actions of foreign subsidiaries – but that may change. A number of people from Eritrea and Guatemala are suing three Canadian mining companies in Canadian courts for alleged abuses at mines in those countries, which include forced labour, human rights violations and assault. The Financial Post said lawyers are getting around the “corporate veil” by “suing the Canadian parents for negligence and other traditional torts on the grounds that management hasn’t lived up to the standards outlined in their public pronouncements.” In other words, the companies are being held globally to the standards they publicly claim at home.

Mining is important but, as with much human activity in the face of rapidly growing populations, we must learn to develop and use resources in ways that aren’t wasteful, destructive and unsustainable. And mining companies must be held to high standards for environmental and human rights protection – at home and abroad.

Dealing with the world’s ever-increasing lifespan

E

verybody knows where the population explosion came from. Two centuries ago birth rates and death rates were high everywhere, and population growth was very slow. Then clean water, good food and antibiotics radically cut the death rate – and the human population of this planet increased 300 percent in the past 90 years.

Eventually, as people moved into the cities and big families were no longer an advantage, the birth rate dropped too. The world’s population is still growing, but it will only increase by 50 percent in the next 90 years. So far, so obvious. But what’s happening to the human lifespan is equally dramatic.

Here’s the key statistic: the average human lifespan in a developed country has been increasing at three months per year ever since the year 1840.

that lifespan grew much faster in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and is growing much slower now.

But no. It has plodded along at the same rate, adding about three months to people’s life spans every year, for the past 175 years. And yes, that does mean that a baby born four years from now can expect to live, on average, a whole year longer than a baby born this year.

There have always been some people who lived to seventy or eighty, but the AVERAGE age at death in 1840 was only forty years. By the year 2000 it was eighty years.

That’s forty more years of life per person in

160 years.

AND LIFESPAN IS STILL INCREASING AT THE SAME RATE. In Britain, for example, the average lifespan has increased by eleven more years in the past forty-four years. Three months per year, just like in the 19th century.

This is why actuaries predict that babies born in the year 2000 will have an average lifespan of one hundred years. Give those babies the eighty years of life that people who died in 2000 enjoyed, then give them an extra three months for every one of those eighty years – and they will have twenty years more years to live. That is, an AVERAGE of a hundred years.

This sounds so outlandish that you instinctively feel there must be something wrong with it, and maybe there is. The fact that it has gone on like this for 175 years doesn’t necessarily mean that it will go on forever. But it’s

not stopping or even slowing, so the smart money says that it will continue for quite a while yet What about the developing world? Most of it has been playing catch-up, and by now the gap isn’t very big any more. In China the average lifespan was only forty-two years as recently as 1950 – but then it began increasing by SIX MONTHS per year, so that the average Chinese citizen can now expect to live to seventy-five.

Once you hit an average lifespan of seventyfive years, however, the pace slows down to three months per year, the same as in the developed countries.

India is a little behind China: average lifespan was still fortytwo years in 1960, and is now sixty-eight, so it’s still going up at six months per year. But we may expect to see it fall to the normal three months per years in about 2030, after the average Indian lifespan reaches seventy-five.

What do you intend to do with those snowballs? Snowballs can be deadly weapons in the wrong hands.

I won’t throw them at anyone, I promise.

Son, we can’t risk it. You can talk about good intentions, but one thing may lead to another and the next thing you know someone loses

an eye and we’re facing higher insurance premiums.

Can I shovel some snow?

And have the neighbour think we’re endorsing child labour? No can do, kiddo. The last thing we need is social services knocking on our door.

Have you lost your marbles? People breaking their backs on slippery steps all over town and you want to add more ice to the mix? The last thing we need is to make it easier for someone to sue us.

And just how do you plan to get there?

I’d walk over. On the sidewalk.

Don’t be so foolish. You know the sidewalks won’t be plowed. And if they do get plowed, it will probably be just when you happen to be toddling along, minding your own business. Do I need to paint a picture for you?

Mom, I promise I won’t go anywhere or do anything. Can I just go outside? I’ll stay close to the house.

Son, you don’t want to know what a 10-pound icicle can do to a child’s skull. Even that flimsy hockey helmet we got you won’t save you if one of those babies cracks off while you’re under it.

OK, Mom. I guess I won’t be going out again today.

That’s right, son. Best to stay in for the rest of the winter and write letters to poor, starving children in Africa.

But even most African countries are seeing a slow growth in average lifespan.

So do we end up with a huge population of people so old they can barely hold their heads up, let alone eat solid food? Probably

not.

In real life, crippling diseases and disabilities are still mainly a phenomenon of the last decade of life, and as the lifespan lengthens that final decade also moves.

Demographers now talk about the “young old”, who are in their 70s and 80s and still in reasonably good shape – and the “old old”, in their 90s and 100s, who are mostly frail and in need of care. So

the time is probably coming when people must work until into their 80s, because the over-65s will amount to a third of the population. No society can afford to support so many.

But by then people won’t be decrepit in their 80s. And the only alternative is dying younger.

History-making climb should inspire others to follow dreams THE ASSOCIATED PRESS YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. - A day after completing what had been considered the world’s most difficult rock climb, two Americans who spent 19 days living on a sheer granite wall said they hope their feat inspires others to follow their own passions.

Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson became the first to free-climb the Dawn Wall on the famous El Capitan rock formation in Yosemite National Park. Unlike climbers who need more elaborate equipment, then men relied entirely on their hands and feet and physical strength, using ropes and harnesses only for safety in case of a fall.

Speaking Thursday to reporters, both men said they had been touched by the number of people who found their journey inspirational.

Jorgeson said the climb should show people to use teamwork and never give up on their dreams.

He said the experience “recalibrates your perception of what you can do and what’s possible. Now that we’ve done this, who knows what comes. I have a whole new bar for what’s possible and what I’m capable of personally.”

Marilyn Joan Charlie 1963-2015

With great sadness we announce the passing of Marilyn Joan Charlie on January 4, 2015.

Marilyn was born in Ashcroft, BC on July 2, 1963.

She has an extended family of brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her only child Adam Krohman.

In the middle ‘80s Marilyn moved to the West Kootenay and the city of Trail.

Marilyn had many friends who thought of her as an angel and a sweetheart.

The trek began Dec. 27. For 19 days, the two lived on the wall itself, eating and sleeping in tents fastened to the rock thousands of feet above the ground and battling painful cuts to their fingertips.

They also endured punishment whenever their grip slipped, pitching them into swinging falls that left them bouncing off the rock face.

The tumbles, which they called “taking a whipper,” ended with startling jolts from their safety ropes.

Caldwell described how support climbers provided them with fresh fruit and vegetables every five days.

They also ate Indian food, burritos and other “pretty normal stuff,” including coffee. For treats, they enjoyed chocolate and Woodford Reserve whisky.

“We like to say you can’t put a price on morale,” said Caldwell, who spoke in a whisper because he had lost his voice from shouting so much during the climb.

There wasn’t much downtime, Caldwell said, but in spare moments he read from the autobiography of legendary climber Barry Blanchard.

Asked why the achievement resonated with so many people, Jorgeson said the Dawn Wall “just personifies dreaming big and making it happen. It’s just a super-concrete example and an iconic, beautiful place with amazing images and a great story of perseverance and teamwork and making it.”

There are about 100 routes up the rock known among climbers as “El Cap,” and many have made it to the top, the first in 1958. No one, however, had ever made it to the summit in one continuous free-climb - until now.

Video game player generates worldwide following THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - Twenty-twoyear-old Toronto native Evan Fong is about to crack the Top 25 list for most YouTube subscribers, passing Ellen DeGeneres and Justin Bieber.

And he’ll do it by playing video games.

Approaching 11 million subscribers and two billion views, Fong’s YouTube channel VanossGaming is part of a massive trend: a subculture of young people are tuning out of TV and are instead going online to watch other people play and talk over video games.

A source with knowledge of YouTube’s payment structure estimated Fong could be making in the neighbourhood of US$300,000 a month from his videos.

“If you’re really into gaming there’s not really anything on TV,” says Fong, who typically gets between four to 14 million views for his content daily.

“Viewers really like the authentic type of content from regular people just playing games because they can relate to that.

“And I think that’s a huge reason why people prefer to watch YouTube videos. It really is a totally different experience and it’s something you can’t find on TV.” In a typical VanossGaming video, Fong and a group of friends chat, laugh and make jokes over gameplay from popular titles such as “Grand Theft Auto V” or “Call of Duty: World at War.” The trend was recently lampooned in a “South Park” episode, which featured Swedish YouTuber Felix Kjellberg, who uses the alias PewDiePie online. Kjellberg has the most-viewed channel on all of YouTube.

Fong, who dropped out of university in his second year as his YouTube channel began exploding in popularity, says he never expected to get paid to play video games.

He launched his channel back in 2011 but didn’t spend much time on it at first. He was focused on playing junior hockey and chasing a U.S. scholarship.

“In the early days I remember maybe 1,000 views was something that would be off the charts for me,” Fong recalls.

“It took, I would say, about

a good year and a half (to start becoming popular). It started really slow and I didn’t take it really seriously. It wasn’t something that I strived to do to the best of my ability like I do now.”

When his hockey dreams didn’t pan out he went to school full-time. His parents were understandably concerned as his YouTube channel stole more and more time from his university studies.

“It was something they weren’t always fully supportive of. Even though there’s a lot of potential for somebody starting a YouTube channel it’s obviously not a guaranteed path. They just basically wanted to make sure I was still taking school seriously,” Fong says.

While his channel’s growth is still meteoric, Fung is level-headed enough to know it could stall - or crash - at any time.

“Anything on the Internet can blow up and go away.”

CP Rail delayed reporting derailment in Glacier National Park

CP Rail took more than a day to notify the Transportation Safety Board about a derailment that took place in Glacier National Park, the Times Review was told.

Nitehawks battle Border Bruins

The Beaver Valley Nitehawks play just one of their next five games at home this Sunday when they host the Grand Forks Border Bruins.

Following a 71-shot barrage in a 12-3 demolition of the Bruins at the Hawks Nest on Saturday, the Hawks play a homeand-home with the embattled Bruins beginning tomorrow night in Grand Forks.

Coach Terry Jones is looking at the upcoming games as an important chance to tweak a Nitehawks game that has suffered just two losses in its last 14 matches. “(Until Saturday) We haven’t been blowing anybody out all year long, so it’s not like that, but

we’ll have an opportunity to work on our game and fine tune our power play and things like that.”

The 7-28-1-3 Bruins are out of playoff contention, with 13 games to play they sit 28 points back of Spokane in the Neil Murdoch division.

Looking past this weekend, on the horizon looms away games against much tougher opponents like the 100-Mile House Wranglers and the Doug Birks division leading Kamloops Storm on Jan. 23-24, and a mid-week game versus the Nelson Leafs before returning home Jan. 30 to face Spokane.

The Hawks will be without top defenceman Andrew Miller and forward Jace Weegar likely for the remainder of the

regular season, but hope to have them back for playoffs.

Defencemen Reid Anderson, who has six points in the last two games, and veteran Walker Sidoni, five points in three games, have stepped it up for the Hawks providing stability on the back end along with an added offensive punch in Miller’s absence.

Trail Smoke Eaters select new team captain

The Trail Smoke Eaters selected another Trail native to lead the charge as the Smokies get set to play the two top-ranked teams in the BCHL this weekend.

Coach and GM Nick Deschenes announced on Wednesday that Jake Lucchini will wear the ‘C’ for the Smoke Eaters following the departure of former captain Scott Davidson in a trade to Chilliwack on Saturday.

“I think Jake has really emerged as an impact player both on and off the ice,” said Deschenes. “He embodies the spirit and energy of the team and has a pretty positive outlook on things, and I think he relishes that role.”

The 19-year-old forward is a recent commit to Michigan Tech and has been a force offensively, scoring 18 goals and adding 28 assists for 46 points in 39 games this season. Although, he will miss his good friend Davidson, Lucchini says he is honoured to follow in the footsteps of home-grown captains like Davidson, Logan Proulx, Paul Mailey, Kevin Limbert, and others.

“It’s hard to see Scotty go, he’s one of my best friends, but I’m excited and it’s a good opportunity for me,” said Lucchini.

“Ever since I was a little kid I wanted to play for the Smoke Eaters, and getting the captain just kind of puts icing on the cake.”

leads Trail in scoring, one point ahead of Lucchini, with 24 goals and 23 assists for 47 points.

“He is more of a quiet leader,” said Deschenes. “I think his leadership is more shown on the ice, as far as how he plays and competes as well as in practice.”

Last weekend’s trade deadline took its toll on the players and coaches, says Lucchini, but now that it is past, the team is looking forward to getting back on the ice and winning one game at a time.

“I think everybody the whole year was worried about playoffs, and I don’t think we’re out of it, but no one is thinking about it really,” said Lucchini. “We had a lot of pressure going into this year and I think it really got to everyone, but now it’s

kind of blown over, and now everyone is just worried about playing and I think that will help us out a lot.”

The loss of Davidson and Griffyn Martin (to Merritt) may be significant as both were character players on the ice and in the room, but Trail will be bolstered by new additions - veteran defenceman Evan MacEachern, and 18-year-old forwards Sheldon Brett and Jordan Passmore.

Trail faces the Nanaimo Clippers tonight and the Penticton Vees on Saturday, two teams that were ranked in the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s Top 20 with the Vees at number 3 and the Clippers ranked 15th in the nation.

“It’s a great opportunity to play top teams,” said Deschenes. “Hopefully everyone elevates their game and performs, it’s a big test.”

Trail is coming off a dramatic 5-4 victory over Alberni Valley last Friday and while the Smokies have yet to claim a point off the high-flying Vees this season - struggling mightily against Interior division opponents with just three wins in 22 games - Trail holds a winning record against the Island division, 6-and-4, and Mainland division teams, 4-and-3.

“Our focus moving forward is to minimize our goals against, we’ve been way too loose in that department and we’ve kind of forced ourselves to have to score five-plus goals to win games, so we’ve been working on that a lot in practice,” Deschenes added.

Nanaimo leads the Island division with a 28-11-0-1 record, and its 57 points is second only to Penticton, 67, in the BCHL.

Nevertheless, in their last meeting Trail played stride-for-stride with the Clippers until a late goal in the final three seconds gave Nanaimo a 2-1 victory. Union commit Brendan Taylor leads the Clippers with 20 goals and 43 points while goaltender Gillaume Decelles leads all goalies with 25 wins, and sports a 2.41 goals against average, and a .930 save percentage. The only goalie who has a better goals-againstaverage, 1.79, and save percentage, .932, is Penticton netminder Hunter Miska.

With 19 games remaining and 16 points out of a playoff spot, the Smoke Eaters have a Herculean task ahead of them to make the post season, but stranger things have happened in sport. Trail has four more games against the fourth-place Merritt Centennials and a sweep can put them right back in the hunt.

“There is always so much to play for, I don’t think it will be too challenging to make sure we get these players back . . . well not back-on-track necessarily, because we are on track. We’re right in all these games, but it’s more just letting the dust settle, and allow everyone to breathe and get back to the task of being better hockey players.”

With Craig Martin and Dallas Calvni back in the line up, the Smoke Eaters are finally almost healthy and expect Adam Todd to be back in the net this weekend.

Trail faces off against Nanaimo and Penticton at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday respectively. Saturday’s missed game against Merritt has been rescheduled for Tuesday in Merritt at 7 p.m.

Injuries take season toll on Smoke Eaters

W

hile it has not been a satisfying year for the Smoke Eaters, the club was tantalizingly close to contending for a playoff spot despite the fact that the existing points deficit has put that idea away.

The team was competitive, as well as entertaining, in the first weeks of the season and it is arguable key injuries have made the difference between the Smokies being in the thick of the battle for a post-season spot and being consigned to another also-ran performance.

Trail began the season with its best contingent of local players - the core of the team, really - in about a decade. Unfortunately for the staff and the roster, two high quality junior A calibre players went mostly missing for two months. Given the Smokies were oh-so-close in so many games during that period it is likely that with a little luck on the injury front they would still be in the hunt.

Craig Martin and Dallas Calvin have missed a combined 40 games of the 39 played to date by Trail. When he has played, Martin has

been the best 200-foot performer on the club. Calvin is large and skilled and often a force in the offensive end.

Both are point-a-game players, despite working around physical and team familiarity issues for much of the season.

During the recent malaise, the Smoke Eaters have been involved in seven one goal losses and half a dozen others where they were tied or within a goal late in games in which they also came up short.

It is reasonable to think that the missing pieces could have been the difference in at least some, conservatively four or five, of the close contests. That’s 10 more standings points for Trail and fewer for some of the interior division rivals that have outlasted them at the end of

things.

No other team has lost the services of premier players for anything like the length of time the Smoke Eaters have been missing Martin and Calvin. While some will say, “every team has injuries,” and be correct, no team has been missing top performers for so many games, and at the same time, and many teams have the wherewithal and population location to access a much deeper core of quality players when their stars drop out for a while.

Given that a major problem for Trail during an almost two-month drought in wins was a lack of scoring outside the two top-ten first liners on the squad, it is actually more-than-reasonable to think the presence of Martin and Calvin could have had a major impact on the standings table.

Early in the season the Smoke Eaters, with their top tier depth intact, were among the league leaders in special teams play. They currently sit 10th.

All of the above is to say I believe the current staff had Trail set up for a vast inprovement in play and outcomes and much of what has

disappointingly transpired was really unavoidable. The team has played entertaining hockey, despite the frustrating finishes too often on tap, while helping several players achieve scholarships.

Without the key injuries, and a surprising mediocrity at goaltending, this could have been a much more successfull, and extended, season.

It is mildly encouraging that tentative plans for 20152016 are on the table, but the books have yet to be done, so tentative is the proper word.

There are a lot of people (even some who attend games) who enjoy and benefit from having a junior A franchise operating here. I hope that remains a thing, but facts are the club does not make profits sufficient to sustain the situation.

There are still nine home games left in the Smoke Eater season, beginning with tonight and tomorrow. Just in case strong attendance - and the games are well-price local entertainment, whatever the standings - can make a difference in the year-end results, you should get out and enjoy those nine events.

You know, “Go Smokies Go,” and not to another city.

The former Trail Smoke Eaters took the PoW award after leading all NCAA scorers for the weekend with three goals and two

game-winning goals.

St. Denis’ contribution helped the Bobcats increase their conference winning streak to four games.

The talented forward had the winner in a 4-2 triumph Friday against RPI and topped that with a pair in a 4-3 win over Union.

The 22-year-old posted a team-leading 11 goals in 21 games and is a fourth-best

plus-6.

“The thing I like about St. Denis is not only is he scoring for us, but he’s been excellent defensively,” Pecknold said.

“He played wing the first two years here; we moved him to center, basically him and [senior Matthew] Peca are my top two centers, and he’s been great defensively.”

He is the only ECAC Hockey player to do that this season.

After the loss of key players like Montrose twins Connor and Kellen Jones, the Bobcats have surprised many this year in engineering a 15-6-1 overall record and a league-leading 10-2 mark against the ECAC. What makes the team’s success so stunning is its youth and inexperience.

“It’s a very young team — we have 18 freshmen and sophomores of our 27 players — so we’re young,” Pecknold said.

“But it’s a great group of guys with great character in the locker room. It’s fun coming to the rink every day, but there’s no question: We’ve gotten cleaned out the last couple years.”

In three seasons with Trail and one with Penticton, St. Denis posted 99 goals and 127 assists in 203 games to go along with 283 penalty minutes.

The pen is mightier than the sword

L

ast week in Paris, the sword was temporarily mightier than the pen when militant Islamists attacked the offices of the satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo, and killed twelve people.

The cold-blooded murder at Charlie Hebdo ignited determined support for freedom of speech. With “Je suis Charlie” (I am Charlie) as the rallying slogan, an estimated 3.6 million people, including 40 world leaders, gathered across France to honor the victims and to show their commitment to democratic freedoms. In a symbolic gesture of solidarity with the slain cartoonists, many held pens and pencils aloft. It was a living cartoon conveying the message, “the pen is mightier than the sword”.

While it is relatively easy to kill individuals for expressing their views, as the massacre at Charlie Hebdo tragically illustrates, it is much more difficult to kill the ideals that promote the flourishing of louise human society.

Following the atrocities of the Second World War, in Everyday Theology the Universal Declaration of Human Rights the international community articulated a set of principles that are the foundation for freedom, justice and peace. These principles recognize the inherent dignity and inalienable rights of all people.

Freedom of speech and belief are specifically mentioned in the preamble to the Declaration.

There have always been and there will always be individuals and groups who are intolerant of differences, and who want to silence freedoms.

While Muslim extremists are not the only people guilty of intolerance, the post 9-11 world is all to familiar with terrorist-style attacks perpetrated in the name of Islam.

Religious extremists of any stripe give religion a bad name; their actions sometimes fuel antireligious sentiment, which in itself is a form of intolerance. An intolerant view of religion needs to be balanced with the recognition that the majority of people of faith do no harm to others; on the contrary, many of them are actively doing good for others. The principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights find a natural home in them because those principles accord with their view of God and of God’s desire for the world.

The way a person views God will determine how he acts. An individual who believes in a compassionate, merciful God will respond to life in a different way than someone who sees God as a harsh task master requiring strict obedience and exacting punishment for infractions.

Last week in Paris, one of the gunmen was heard to shout “Allahu Akbar” (“God is greater”) and “The prophet is avenged”. He had a particular view of the character of God and the dictates of Islam. That view stands in stark contrast to this one, expressed in a January 9, 2015 letter published on the website of the Montreal Gazette.

Shafik Bhalloo wrote, “My Islam is a religion of peace, tolerance and forgiveness. My Islam teaches love, concord, sympathy and tenderness to one’s fellow men – not killing people for practicing their freedom of expression or speech.”

The actions of radical Muslims who feel it necessary to battle the west, wipe out Jews, Christians or other Muslim groups perpetrate crimes against the dignity of their religion, and against the compassionate God (however one names it) who wills the well-being of all people, including irreverent cartoonists.

Stretcher Bearer I receive a number of devotionals by email each morning. I would like to share one from Joni Eareckson Tada that spoke to me this week. At the beginning of a new year let us ask God to show us how we can be stretch bearers.

Mark 2:3-4 “Some men came, bringing to Him a paralytic, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed was lying on”.

The four friends of the paralyzed man probably did more than carry the stretcher. Maybe they arrived early at their friend’s house to help him get ready. When the group arrived at the home where Jesus was teaching, they most likely placed the paralyzed man on the ground to survey the scene. Going through the crowd wouldn’t work; they must come up with an alternative plan of action. Eyeing the stairs up the side of the house to the roof, they realized, that’s it!

Persistence paid off. A ripped up roof certainly got Jesus’ attention, but the four friends- their faith, creativity and commitment certainly drew more attention. Perhaps as Jesus looked up to see the crumbling tiles He may have thought of His own words, “Whatever you did for one of the

Town picked as one of Canada’s top retirement destinations is looking for paper carriers in all areas for one day a week Call

Just as European explorers “discovered” an already inhabited North America, Canada’s national newspaper has stumbled across Creston.

Readers of the Globe and Mail have singled out Creston in the newspaper’s “third round” of stories on Canada’s top retirement destinations.

In a story on Monday by retirement property editor Christine Mushka, the author comments, “Arguably the most prosperous generation North American has ever seen, baby boomers are changing the expectations of retirement, including where they live. The unrelenting upward pressure on home prices, especially in Canada’s largest urban centres,

works in their favour.”

After citing high real estate prices in Canada’s major urban centres, Mushka said many retirees are seeking options.

“At these kinds of prices, many baby boomers can afford to cash out of city properties and adventure to smaller centres where retirement savings stretch further. It’s not an easy move. It may not work for every retiree.”

Six popular small retirement destinations are mentioned, including Creston.

Others include Osoyoos, B.C.; Chatham-Kent, Ont.; Gimli, Man., Port Stanley, Ont.; and Rothesay, N.B. “The town of Creston, B.C., is already home to a large number of retirees, and they keep on coming, especially from

Alberta,” writes Kerry Gold.

“They are drawn to a microclimate that means winter temperatures seldom dip far below freezing, and there’s hardly any snow. They also like the fact that Creston is the epitome of the idyllic small town, with a population of about 5,000.

It’s got its own little hospital, courses available at the College of the Rockies, five nearby ski hills, and is a short drive to the Idaho border – where locals regularly fuel up in the town of Porthill. As well, property prices are at least 50 per cent cheaper compared with Calgary or Vancouver, with acreages selling quickly.”

City featured in ‘Roundabouts of the World’ today

Paris, Shanghai, Birmingham…Golden?

You wouldn’t normally see these world renowned destinations and metropolitan centres in the same sentence with Golden, but they do all have one thing in common. They are all featured in the Roundabouts of the World 2015 Calendar.

“Nearly a year ago I heard an interview on CBC radio’s As it Happens with Kevin Beresford who produces a calendar called Roundabouts of Britain – he was expanding to Roundabouts of the World,” said Phil Armstrong, planning technician with the Town of Golden.

“So I sent him a picture of Golden’s gem of a roundabout and he decided to feature the roundabout in his 2015 edition of the calendar.”

Golden’s road to roundabout fame was not quite as simple as that, however. After receiving

the photo of Golden’s roundabout, Beresford lost all of the information, including a contact for Armstrong. He then had to seek help from the CBC and its listeners to identify the mysterious traffic circle in the B.C. mountains.

As it Happens and CBC posted it on their Facebook pages, asking help to find this place.

After a variety of guesses, including Clearwater, Squamish, and one gentleman who was certain it was downtown Regina (apparently the mountains in the background resembled those of Saskatchewan), enough people identified it as Golden.

Beresford was able to find contact information for Armstrong, and let him know that the calendar had been published, with Golden featured in March.

And Golden is in with some pretty impressive company. A roundabout from Idaho, which Beresford calls “a worthy

winner of the International Roundabout of the Year award,” features a wildlife scene with a mountain cliff face, cascading waterfalls, and soaring eagles.

“There’s some pretty cool other ones in there,” said Armstrong.

Golden’s roundabout came about from the revamping of the overpass off of Highway 1. Highways decided to use a traffic circle, and the Town of Golden wanted to add a little flair to it. Highways had planned on putting shrubs in the centre, but Wilsgard wanted something a little more attention grabbing.

“It’s nice because you can see it from the highway when you drive in.”

As roundabouts are becoming more and more common in the province, so to is the inclusion of community art.

Most that are popping up feature some sort of centrepiece that showcases the community in some way.
