Trades and exploration allows students to earn money while gaining employment skills through the Accelerated Credit Enrolment in Industry Training. In Surrey, the program now includes more than 15 trades, including automotive, baking, hairdressing, plumbing and welding. The report also indicates the number of children in care being educated in Surrey

has dropped from more than 600 in November 2011 to about 200. Standardized tests show an improvement of 12.5 per cent between Grade 4 and Grade 7 in the proportion of these students reading to a level that meets or exceeds expectations, and a six per cent increase in writing to the same standard. However, the district recognizes a need to work on numeracy, with nearly 19 per cent fewer students who are in care meeting expectations in Grade 7 than when they were in Grade 4.

of our students as we work towards expansion,” he says. “This is a great example of SFU’s commitment to authentic community engagement.” The opportunity arose after SFU’s Surrey campus and Surrey’s City Hall became neighbours this past spring.

“When it came down to the actual space and functional needs of the courses, Bus 361 became the perfect fit,” says Lo. Masri worked with Surrey parks staff to fine-tune the collaboration. “As a project management course, the students as a group take a project from start to finish, and as we’ve seen so far, with impressive results,” he says. In his two previous classes, Masri devised a class assignment with a goal of raising over $25,000 to support the Canadian Cancer Society. The students planned and carried out the project called 25toLife (www.twentyfive tolife.ca), raising more than $25,000 last fall and over $28,000 this semester.

All this month, business students at Simon Fraser University are heading for class in the council chambers of

Surrey City Hall. A partnership between SFU’s Surrey campus and the city means the chambers are housing a weekly class of project management students. SFU Beedie School of Business professor Kamal Masri teaches the class, Bus 361, a pop-

ular business course expected to attract as many as 60 students. Beyond housing the class in council chambers, students are collaborating with Surrey parks and recreation staff as they design and implement their semester-long project. It’s the first time

an SFU credit course offered at the Surrey campus is being held in council chambers, notes SFU Surrey campus Executive Director Steve Dooley. “We are thankful to the City of Surrey for providing this creative opportunity to support the needs From left: Surrey City Manager Vince Lalonde, SFU Surrey Executive Director Steve Dooley, SFU Beedie School of Business Executive Director Kamal Masri and Campus Space Coordinator Kinson Lo. of our students as we work towards expansion,” he says.

Surrey Night Market set for this spring ▶ SECOND SEASON OPENS MAY 29 IN CLOVERDALE BLACK PRESS

The second season of the Surrey Night Market will open on May 29, organizers have announced.

Described as the only multicultural night market in the Fraser Valley, the open air market is to run from 6-11 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until Sept. 20 at the Cloverdale Exhibition Grounds (17726 62 Ave.) Featuring a variety of foods, services and goods, the market will again host performances by local bands, singers and

dancers, as well as rides and games for children and youth, and door prizes. Organizers say the 2015 night market will have a focus on community and social perspective, with one community tent dedicated to non-profit community-based organizations. As well, a couple of market

weekends will benefit food banks in the region, with non-perishable food items accepted in exchange for admission and donated to a food bank willing to partner in promoting the initiative. Toy drives are also planned. Free admission during the second season will be offered to families of Canadian Forces and

exploration because summer job action had limited the amount of data available this year.
