ment clubs, with an application deadline of Jan. 23 for the spring program.

“Through Stewards of the Future, students will have the opportunity to explore issues that affect the land, water and other natural resources in British Columbia,” Guichon said. “The goal of this program is not to solve the challenges we face, but rather to encourage open discussion and gain a better understanding of the issues that affect our natural surroundings.”

Program partners, including the education ministry and B.C. Parks, offer support for projects such as research on invasive species leading to mapping and removal.

The Stewards of the Future toolkit emphasizes hands-on “placebased” experience to appreciate and enhance biodiversity.

Guichon and her late husband Lawrence Guichon are credited with pioneering holistic management in the

B.C. cattle industry, emphasizing preservation of natural grassland on their historic Merritt-area ranch.

Holistic management, developed by African biologist and game ranger Allan Savory, overturned the longheld belief that overgrazing is the result of too many animals.

Savory proved that reducing the number of animals doesn’t restore grasslands, which developed in the presence of large herds that were kept closely bunched and moving to avoid predators. Planned grazing mimics that pattern and gives grasslands time to recover.

HAFI Funds Home Modifications for Disabled Man When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced.

“The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small.

I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.”

Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheelin shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.

“ I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.”

Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home.

The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

Regional District meeting deals with Upper Columbia Valley items

The most recent Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) board of directors meeting touched on several items of interest to the Upper Columbia Valley.

RDEK Area F director Wendy Booth was re-elected as vice-chair of the board, for a third term, at the Friday, December 12th meeting. Current chair Rob Gay was also re-elect-

ed, for a fourth term.

The chair and vicechair positions have one-year terms. “I’m looking forward to continuing working with Chair Gay, in the role of vice chair, I think we make a good team.

It is a job that I take seriously and enjoy.

We had a 40 per cent turn over on our board, I’m looking forward to working with both the veteran and new members,” said Booth.

A letter of appreciation will be sent from the RDEK to the Windermere Bottle Depot Group to thank the group for donating $2,900 to buy two new concrete picnic tables for Windermere Beach, and another one will be sent from the RDEK to Copper Point Golf Course for the golf course’s in-kind donations and assistance at the Crossroads Ballpark.

“Copper Point has been a tremendous help with that ballpark, they’ve been great neighbours,” said RDEK environmental services manager Kevin Paterson. “We’re also grateful to the bottle depot group. The (Windermere) beach continues to get a lot of use in the summer, so there was a need for more tables.”

Application methods include: foliar, soil, wick/wipe-on and cut surface, using backpack, wick/wipe-on applicator, squirt bottle, injection tools and handgun (power hose and nozzle).

Cleaning up after the holidays As much as I enjoy the holidays, it sure is nice to have the tree gone, needles cleaned up and the last of the lights and decorations out of the house.

Our home feels less cluttered and easier to live in.

The house isn't the only thing that usually needs some extra attention after the holiday season. After weeks of eggnog, more sweets than usual and general overindulgence your body is likely needing some post holiday attention too.

Alcohol, sugar and overconsumption are the main culprits for the holiday body blues and already this week I have seen a number of patients complaining of bloating, puffiness, fatigue, rashes, joint pain and digestive troubles. The most common cause is an overgrowth of Candida yeast as a result of the sugars found in grains, sweets and alcohol. When Candida grows beyond what is normal it causes the above mentioned symptoms and is called Candida Related Complex. There are millions of Candida yeast in all of us and as they go through their life cycle they release exotoxins (secreted toxins) and when they die

they dissolve in us releasing endotoxins (toxins found inside the organism).

These toxins directly irritate the digestive system, promote inflammation and stress the kidney and liver. The result is the postholiday body blues. The most effective way to correct Candida overgrowth is to limit their food supply by avoiding sugars and to directly kill them using specific fatty acids that block their ability to reproduce.

Avoid refined sugar, fruit juice, honey, maple syrup, agave syrup and reduce your intake of all grains and root vegetables as they are also significant sources of sugar. Drink water and eat lots of vegetables, nuts and seeds, meats, fish and poultry. You can also use undecenoic acid, an extract from castor bean to stop candida from reproducing. For a more intensive therapy you can combine grapefruit seed extract and caprylic acid with undecenoic acid. You might also consider using milk thistle to support your liver and fibers like psyllium and inulin to clean bind endotoxins and clean out your bowel.

Friends of Children supports EK families

by Pat Chisholm East Kootenay Family Support Coordinator, Friends of Children So many children require specialized medical attention these days or so it appears. Cranbrook, with the opening of the Kootenay Childhood Development Centre, now has pediatricians and a host of other programs such as the Infant Development Program supporting children and their parents. Speech & language pathologists are among the specialists Cranbrook is lucky to have close to home.

Due to new technology referrals to nonlocal doctors or agencies can be accessed through video conferencing keeping costs down and treatment local.

However there are times when a child needs to be treated elsewhere because our medical services simply cannot handle the situation – a premature baby airlifted to Kelowna, a child with a severe head injury flown to Vancouver, cancer treatments with a 6 month hospital stay in Calgary are just a few of the situations where children and their families needed to access care beyond our community. In 2012, EK

children attended 1,334 medical appointments and were hospitalized on 114 occasions in Alberta alone.

Families accessing medical services for their children face stress, anxiety, life disruptions and financial hardship. The average cost for a Cranbrook family for a one-day medical appointment in Calgary is $320 including gas, accommodation, parking and food.

Some families may be able to afford a single visit; however, for those children requiring follow up appointments and ongoing specialized medical services over an extended period of time, the financial burden becomes significant.

The registered charity, Friends of Children supports East Kootenay families with financial assistance for items such as accommodation, travel costs, parking, and meals. By the end of October 2014, Friends of Children received 172 family requests and approved $35,000 in funding.

This represents a 30% increase from 2013.

In addition to providing financial assistance, Friends of Children also helps families navigate the health care system by offering information, resources & coor-

dination of services using links with other organizations. Through Friends of Children, families become aware of: accommodations supports such as the BC Family Residence Program, Ronald McDonald and Easter Seal Houses, connections at children’s hospitals like Family Resource Centres and social workers and other charities including Variety, Hope Air, Shriners Care Cruiser, Cops for Kids and Canadian Cancer Society. In this way, Friends of Children addresses the entire needs of the family.

Legacy of giving lights stars in Creston Submitted Interior Health’s Swan Valley Lodge in Creston is the latest benefactor of a $5,000 gift to EKFH’s Starlite Campaign.

Rob and Dennis, sons of Henry & Josephine Gay, took a unique approach to honour the lives of their parents who both passed away within a year. During one of his many visits to Swan Valley Lodge Rob came across a recognition piece featuring names of individuals and families who had donated to the facility. Staring right back at him were the names of his grandparents and parents.

For the Gay family the tradition of giving has taken place for many years and has assisted in providing either medical equipment or patient comforts items for the Creston residential care facility.

COTR enrolments up for winter semester

The 2015 winter semester is underway at College of the Rockies and all indications are it will be a successful one. At this point, the College is seeing a substantial increase in enrolments over the 2014 winter semester in the university transferable programs (Arts, Science, Business, Tourism and Kinesiology).

This is the second year in a row that the university transfer programs are seeing increases in enrolments, with Tourism, Kinesiology and Business seeing the largest growth.

College of the Rockies Registrar, DJ Silva is especially pleased to see the continued growth of university transfer courses. “This indicates that students continue to see us a

viable option for starting their university education. Smaller class sizes, affordable tuition and the ability to stay at home for the first year or two of their post-secondary journey make starting at the College an appealing choice.

“Many former students say the level of education they received, because of the individual attention available from instructors – many of whom have PhDs - is superior to what they would receive at a larger institution,” she says.

Attention: vegetation management The purpose of the proposed Pest Management Plan (PMP) is to manage vegetation, including noxious weeds and invasive plants, within facilities, which include gate, district, compressor, valve, meter, odorant and propane stations within the FortisBC service area. The FortisBC service area is located in proximity to the communities of Cranbrook, Sparwood, Fernie, Kimberley, Vernon, Salmon Arm, Revelstoke, Kamloops, Merritt, Cache Cr, Clinton, 100 Mile House, Williams Lk, Quesnel, Prince George, Mackenzie, Chetwynd, all of the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland as well as Victoria, Nanaimo and Campbell River on Vancouver Island.

The pest management methods proposed for use include physical (non-chemical) treatment methods (selective slashing, girdling, hand pulling, weed trimming, mowing, pruning, geotextiles and stump removal), the release of biological control agents (insects), cultural control methods (grass seeding), and the use of pesticides (herbicides). The common name (and examples of trade names) of the pesticides proposed for use under this plan include: aminopyralid, aminocyclopyrachlor, chlorsulfuron (Telar), clopyralid (Transline), 2-4 Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, dicamba (Vanquish), diuron (Karmex), flumioxazin, fluroxpyr, glyphosate (Roundup, Roundup Weathermax, Glyphos, Vantage, Vantage Plus), hexazinone (Velpar),indaziflam, imazapyr (Arsenal), metsulfuronmethyl, picloram (Tordon 22K), simazine (Simadex, Princep) and triclopyr (Garlon 4 or Garlon Ultra). Application methods include: foliar, soil, wick/wipe-on and cut surface, using backpack, wick/wipe-on applicator, squirt bottle, injection tools and handgun (power hose and nozzle).

The proposed duration of the PMP is from May 1, 2015 to April 30, 2020.

Wasa Winter Festival New Year’s Eve Day was unqualified success

The Wasa Lions Club’s first Wasa Winter Festival 2014 New Year’s Eve Day. This Family friendly event was so successful, we will be doing it again New Year’s Eve Day 2015.

Events included hockey skills and pick up

hockey on the brand new Pete Vereshagen Memorial rink.

Ice jug curling and learning to skate on the family rink were a big hit and there were games for the kids and snow piles to play in.

Bonfires for roasting hotdogs and marshmallows for smores complimented the hot, fresh, warm bannock—yum.

It was a really nice way to connect with the community at the end of the busy holiday season.

The fireworks capped the perfect day off at 8 p.m. from Wasa Lake and could be viewed from Main Beach.

Environmental Assessment of the Proposed Baldy Ridge Extension Project Open House and Invitation to Comment Teck Coal Limited (Proponent) is proposing to extend the working life of the Elkview mine by developing and operating the proposed Baldy Ridge Extension Project (proposed Project). The proposed Project would be located approximately 2.5 km east of Sparwood, British Columbia, and would produce an estimated 6.8 million tonnes of clean coal per year.

The proposed Project is subject to review under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act. The Proponent must obtain an environmental assessment certificate before any work can be undertaken on the proposed Project. However, prior to submission of an application (Application) for a certificate by the Proponent, Environmental Assessment Office of British Columbia (EAO) must first approve Application Information Requirements.

Key to the Application Information Requirements is the identification of Valued Components to be studied and the areas within which the studies would occur. This task is done through the Valued Components Selection Document.

To provide information about Valued Components Selection, EAO invites the public to attend an Open House. There will be one Open House, to be held as follows: at:
