HAFI Funds Home Modifications for Disabled Man When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced.

“The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small.

I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.”

Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheelin shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.

“ I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.”

Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home.

The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

The move comes after the Energy East proposal to switch a gas pipeline to carry oil from Alberta to refineries in Quebec and New Brunswick.

Chief Barry Nikal of the Moricetown Indian Band endorsed the new regulation, but other aboriginal leaders and the NDP aren’t satisfied with a cabinet order that could be quickly changed.

Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson says Coleman first promised legislation to prevent oil sands crude from being carried in pipelines built for gas at a public meeting in Moricetown in April 2014. In November, Donaldson presented his own private member’s bill to have the legislature endorse the move, after Coleman said he would use regulation instead.

He was supported by Wet’suwet’en hereditary chief John Ridsdale, who visited the B.C. legislature before joining anti-oil pipeline protesters on Burnaby Mountain.

“The proposed routes are actually all in our major spawning beds,” Ridsdale said. “And you’ve got to realize that the water that comes from Wet’suwet’en territory also goes to the Fraser River and to

the Skeena River. So what we’re doing is protecting everything on behalf of British Columbians.”

Ridsdale is the highest ranking member of the Tsayu Clan, one of five clans and 38 house territories of the Wet’suwet’en. The Tsayu have rejected both oil and gas pipelines crossing their territory, and another house, the Unist’ot’en, has built a settlement with the help of outside environmentalists in an effort to block any pipeline development.

The United States is ripping us off on water

by Tom Fletcher The U.S. has Canada over a barrel on water as well as oil these days, but the tide is turning.

Last week I mentioned a new book called <I>The Columbia River Treaty – A Primer</I> by members of Simon Fraser University’s climate adaptation team. This slim volume makes the case that B.C. has ended up with a shockingly bad deal from this 1964 treaty, which concerned itself entirely with flood control and hydroelectric power.

In those days there was little or no environmental assessment.

Agriculture, fish habitat and aboriginal impacts were ignored. More than a decade after the disastrous flood year of 1948, once Ottawa stopped its bureaucratic delays, U.S. public and private power utilities paid B.C. $254 million to build three dams on the Columbia system.

Those dams (and one at Libby, Montana that mostly floods B.C. land) hold back the huge spring runoff from the Rockies and then dole out water for power production in B.C. and for the 15

hydro dams previously built downstream in the U.S. The U.S. payment was for half the power over 30 years, which B.C. didn’t need at the time.

Then our American cousins cut us another cheque for $64 million, an estimate of the value of flood protection from 1968 all the way to 2024.

Boy, did we get taken.

The SFU team calculates the value of that flood control to the U.S. at more like $32 billion.

That’s not even the worst of it. The Kootenays were once the leading fruit and vegetable growing area in B.C., bigger than the Okanagan. Now in the Arrow Lakes and other reservoirs, levels rise and fall dramatically to steady the flow south. In addition to the large areas permanently flooded by the Mica, Duncan and Hugh Keenleyside dams, this renders more of B.C.’s prime bottom land impassable.

B.C. is paid precisely zero for this sacrifice, while Washington state has developed a $5 billion-a-year farm economy using our stable irrigation source. That has helped their tree fruit growers push some Okanagan orchardists out of business.

As U.S. billionaires continue to bankroll environmental attacks on B.C. and Alberta energy projects, it’s worth noting that long before the treaty, the U.S. military-industrial complex had wiped out the Columbia River salmon runs.

of Engineers and its private power partners dammed everything they could find, exterminating a fishery bigger than the Fraser that had sustained aboriginal people on both sides of today’s border for thousands of years.

B.C. Energy Minister Bill Bennett and SFU’s Jon O’Riordan both described to me their experience at the Columbia River Basin conference, held last October in Spokane.

Their main impression was that Americans, including traditional tribes, want those salmon runs restored. Vast amounts have been spent on hatcheries and habitat to speed recovery below the Grand Coulee dam, which stands like a giant tombstone for migratory fisheries above it.

Should the Americans ever manage to get salmon above their biggest dam, it will largely be up to B.C. to provide sufficient cool water to keep them alive. That service has an increasing value to the U.S. as well as an ongoing cost to B.C. Bennett surprised some in Spokane when he said the U.S. needs to pay more for the benefits from the Columbia River Treaty.

The flood control agreement expires in 2024. The treaty requires 10 years’ notice for either country to exit. Climate shifts are expected to make B.C. water more important than ever.

Minister explains new roadside worker legislation

By Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure People who work to keep us safe often do so in dangerous places.

Think about working on the side of a highway with barely more than a meter between traffic and a guard rail.

This is the workplace of thousands of women and men who remove debris from travel lanes, clear culverts, repair traffic signals and hundreds of other important tasks every day - and night - on our roads and highways.

They need space to do their work safely.

In the past, drivers were required to slow down and move over for official vehicles only, such as stopped police cars and ambulances with blue or red lights flashing. Others who work to keep our highways safe said that

this wasn’t enough. The BC Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association, and our highway maintenance contractors, raised concerns that this did not protect all roadside workers.

We listened, and responded: As of Jan. 1, 2015, Slow Down Move Over protection is extended to all vehicles with red, blue or yellow flashing lights stopped on the side of a road - because a stopped vehicle means there are people working nearby.

The expanded Slow Down Move Over regulation requires drivers to drop their speed as soon as flashing lights are visible. On a highway, that means dropping to 70 kilometres an hour or slower. If the speed limit is 70 kilometres per hour or less, drop to 40 kilometres an hour or slower.

drivers more time to react in the event that more defensive action is required.

Roadside workers need a buffer from traffic, so it is also important to signal and move to the adjacent lane on a four-lane highway or road. By slowing down, signalling and moving away from roadside work, drivers are doing their part to keep workers safe, as well as being an example to other drivers to follow.

There are more than 2,000 contracted employees willing to work 24 hours a day, seven days a week to keep our highways and roads open, safe and reliable. In addition, there are hundreds more people who have

reason to stop and turn on the flashing lights, including conservation officers, commercial vehicle safety enforcement officers, land surveyors, park rangers, tow truck operators, municipal maintenance workers, contracted electronic technicians and geotechnical engineers in addition to police, fire and ambulance services.

The Drive BC website lists scheduled maintenance work and any effect it may have on traffic, which helps motorists to be prepared for flaggers directing traffic around work zones.

But not all work can be planned. Inclement weather may result in result in rock or tree branches falling

on roads, or an incident could damage a sign or traffic signal.

Insecure loads could mean debris on travel lanes, or wildlife could be killed.

Whether planned maintenance or an unexpected event, we know one thing for sure: there are people working on the sides of our highways every day of the year.

The legislation is clear: These people are keeping roads safe for our travel. Let’s keep them safe from harm by obeying the law, and slowing down and moving over.

1. New Faces in the Garden. A few years ago, your image of the ‘typical gardener’ may have been a lovely lady in her 50s, tending to her rose garden or a retired gentleman, growing his vast vegetable garden. Over the past few years, many new faces are popping up in gardens across Canada with mostly Millennials (those born between the early 1980s and early 2000s) taking up gardening.

2. Health and Wellbeing… From the Outside In. With a change in who is gardening comes a shift in focus of what gardeners are planting. People are not just gardening for beauty anymore, instead they are interested in growing for nourishment and wellbeing, both their own as well as that of the community and the environment.

3. Preserving the Goodness. Gardeners are not only looking to grow their own these days, they are also wanting to preserve, transform and share their bounty. Edible gifts, such as jams, pickles, herbed oils or even home-made beer and wine are gaining popularity and what better way to impress at a dinner party than with home-grown snacks and goodies.

4. Rebels in the Hoods. With a focus on personal and community wellbeing also comes an idea of transforming traditional neighbourhoods into modern ‘agri-hoods’. From roof-top gardens, to urban chickens and the return of the clothesline, people are reclaiming land to sustain themselves and their families.

5. Disorderly Conduct. Our wish of getting back to nature also finds expression in what can be described as a ‘Bed Head’ style of gardening.

Neat rows and colour-coordinated annuals are disappearing in favour of purposefully unstyled, natural looking spaces. Native plants that are adapted to local climates and often require less water and maintenance are particularly popular in this style of planting.

6. Garden Parties. While gardening is getting more serious, now is also the time for balance and fun and the outdoor space is no exception.

People are claiming their outdoor spaces for cooking, dining and entertaining. Homeowners are looking for easy and quick solutions for decorating that still allow them to personalize their space.

7. Portable Gardening. Container gardening is a great way of allowing our mobile society to integrate gardening on the go. Adaptable and flexible planters with wheels or handles and made from light-weight, durable materials allow gardening in almost any outdoor space.

8. Bite-Sized Blooms. With smaller spaces available for gardening and more demands on free time, compact and low-maintenance plants are allowing gardeners to have a big impact with a pint-sized plant. Breeders are constantly developing new varieties that can pack a punch even in the smallest of spaces.

9. Expressing Individuality. The way we dress, the music we listen to and many other choices allow us to express our individuality and with plants created in every colour palette, we can extend our style to the outdoors as well. Pivotal year for aboriginal relations Tom Fletcher’s New Year interview with Aboriginal Relations Minister John Rustad.

TF: Can you tell me about some agreements with First Nations you have in the works for 2015?

JR: On the LNG front, we have agreements with approximately 20 nations that we have signed and we’ll be announcing some time into the new year. I can’t give you more details than that, but they include the coast, some of the sites where LNG facilities will be, and some of them of course are also pipeline benefit agreements.

It’s been a good year for us with LNG negotiations. We have another 20 nations that we’re working with and with a few exceptions, most of those are moving along relatively well.

TF: One of the agreements signed recently was a benefit agreement with the Wet’suwet’en First Nation. At the same time we have one or two hereditary chiefs at the Unist’ot’en camp (accessible by logging road from Houston), with support from professional environmentalists, and they’re adamantly opposed to gas or oil pipelines. Have I

got that right?

JR: I wouldn’t characterize it that way. Here is how the Wet’suwet’en people are divided.

There is the office of the Wet’suwet’en, which is all of the hereditary chiefs from the Wet’suwet’en areas.

And then there are six elected bands, four of which have asserted their territory, working with their hereditary chiefs, and those are the Wet’suwet’en First Nation, the Skin Tyee First Nation, the Nee Tahi Buhn Indian Band and the Burns Lake Indian Band.

And then there is the Moricetown Band and Hagwilget, which have not asserted their territory but work under the Office of the Wet’suwet’en.

The Unist’ot’en is one hereditary chief, and the Unist’ot’en family is involved in the blockade. So I’m hopeful, we’ve been working with them. I’m optimistic that in the new year we may be able to find a resolution to that particular issue.

TF: Another highlight of the year, the Site C dam announcement on the Peace River. We’ve got Treaty 8 First Nations who remain opposed. They signed their treaty in 1899, it East Kootenay Realty

surrendered the territory east of the Rockies and it protects their traditional hunting, trapping and fishing. The joint review panel on Site C said there are impacts here that really can’t be mitigated.

What’s the duty of the Crown in that situation?

JR: Obviously we have a duty of consultation, and where appropriate accommodation. We’ve done a lot of work with those nations to date, and we will continue to be engaged with the Treaty 8 nations.

But certainly, particularly for West Moberly First Nations, who are arguably most impacted by this project, it’s going to be challenging. It has significant impact on them directly as a people, so we’re going to need to find ways to mitigate. You can’t mitigate the fact that the valley will be flooded, but find some other things that we can do with the nation.

We’re engaged with them as well as the other Treaty 8 nations.

BC Hydro still has a lot of work to be done. We have to find some way to bring some agreement if we can.

TF: Some of those groups have logging and construction companies that could realize a benefit from a project like that?

JR: There will be hundreds of millions of dollars worth of business and economic opportunity for the people in that area and specifically First Nations. Some business units already have contracts with BC Hydro. My hope is that those companies and bands have opportunities to fully participate.

TF: Can those opposed stop Site C? JR: Obviously there are some legal challenges out there. I would say Site C has probably been the most studied major project in British Columbia’s history. There have been conversations that have gone on for 30-plus years and a lot of engagement with First Nations on it. I can’t say what a judge will say.

And not to forget that there are 10 [nonaboriginal] landowners that will be significantly impacted, and it will certainly be difficult for them as this project see Aboriginal page 9

TF: The Tsilhqot’in court decision recognizing aboriginal title was a big event in 2014.

Are people reading too much into that as a precedent for other First Nations, or is that territorial claim really unique?

JR: It is unique. There has never before been a declaration of aboriginal title in Canada. It’s also unique as a very long court case that led to that decision. One thing that isn’t unique, we know that aboriginal title exists, it’s in the Canadian constitution.

The courts have said that it exists but they have never defined exactly where it was. When you look at how the definition was applied for the Tsilhqot’in decision, that was known as well, in terms of the continuous occupation prior to 1864 [Chilcotin war], their continuous and exclusive use.

This is the first direct title award. It certainly has raised expectations, and from our perspective, we want to do as the courts have said, and that is sit down and negotiate. What does this mean? How do we work with First Nations to define their aboriginal title for those nations who want to do that.

Through the letter of understanding that we entered into with the Tsilhqot’in people, we’re working through

a lot of technical issues, to get a protocol agreement in place by the end of March. For example, who ploughs the roads?

How do you take care of the day-to-day things that need to be done?

TF: That decision was based on the jurisdiction of the forests ministry, and what the Supreme Court of Canada decided was that the province still has jurisdiction to go in and put out forest fires if that’s required, but not much else. Is there a sense of unfairness among the non-aboriginal population about how this has come out?

JR: I’ve certainly heard from people who are wondering, where does this go. When you look at what the constitution and the court says, it’s a reality for us in British Columbia.

It’s something I think we need to embrace and find ways to work within it.

More importantly for the Tsilhqot’in people, how do we create an economy for them?

How do you help them build a future in today’s world and economy? I think [former Nisga’a Nation president] Dr. Joseph Gosnell put it well when he was at the legislature not long ago.

He said aboriginal people, economically, are 100 years behind nonaboriginal people and that needs to change.

And that means aboriginal people need to be engaged in the economy, and there

need to be benefits that flow from where aboriginal people have title on the land base.

TF: Your party was strongly opposed to the Nisga’a treaty when it was signed by the previous government. It’s been quite a journey since then, hasn’t it?

JR: It truly has been.

When you look at where relationships between the province and First Nations have gone over that period, it has been a similar journey. When we decided

to take the path of the New Relationship back in 2005, things have changed dramatically.

We went from having virtually no agreements between the province and First Nations to today, where just in the last four years alone, we’ve signed more than 200 significant revenue sharing agreements. We have hundreds of other agreements, on education, social services, health, capacity funding, etc. We’ve come a long way in really

the table, and we have moved forward with two other treaties that will be fully implemented by 2016.

But I think looking forward, the conversations that we’re going to be having with regards to mining, the work we’ll be doing with the Tsilhqot’in, the need we have to go out and have conversations around things like forestry and title … I think it’s going to be an exciting year.

Mixed climbing is a combination of ice and rock climbing that evolved in the mid 90â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in Vail Colorado when ice climbers successfully scaled rock formations using ice tools in order to reach the ice structures above them, which they wanted to climb. From this beginning, the modern sport of competitive mixed climbing was born. The UIAA (International Climbing

and Mountaineering Federation - Bern Switzerland) is recognized by the International Olympic Committee as the international federation representing mountaineering and climbing and aims to have the sport accepted as an Olympic competition sport.

As members of the Alpine Club of Canada representing Canada, Karlee and Noah will next be travelling to Saas Fee Switerzalnd to compete in the UIAAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s World Youth Ice Climbing Championship January 17-18, 2014 under the guidance of their Cranbrook-based coach Gord McArthur.

Submitted The Cranbrook and District Arts Council would like to Thank everyone for a great 2014 and we hope to see you in the Gallery in 2015. This month we proudly present the Columbia Basin Institute of Regional History’s Exhibit titled: Class Through the Looking Glass, which will be in the Gallery from Tuesday January 13th to Friday January 30th.

The Columbia Basin Institute of Regional History has partnered with School District #5, the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance and Cranbrook & District Arts Council to research and assemble a series of web pages & exhibits investigating the history of education in the East Kootenay area. The Columbia Basin Institute is interested in things that evoke memories of what school was like and how it tied into the larger community. This includes photos of people schools were named after, programmes from past dramatic events, sports trophies, club crests, school publications, photos of teachers and school buildings - all these things (and much more) will help to assemble an understanding of how schools and their communities were linked together.

Since its beginning in 2004 the non-profit Columbia Basin Institute of Regional History has

worked to make Basin history publicly accessible and inclusive. The Columbia Basin Image Bank, from which the items presented here have been pulled, is a major undertaking of the Institute’s.

Currently more than 40,000 images are available to the public on-line, for viewing and/or purchase, at www.basinistitute.org.

All their work is designed to reach out into the Columbia Basin and energize a sense of their collective past. They work to recognize the strong individuals and cultures of the Columbia Basin, enhance those entities, and then look past that to the connectivity of our region as a whole.

They hold to the principle that by articulating our common history clearly, and presenting it in an available and interesting manner, we can influence our common future. And our common future is strong communities that are proud of all their constituent parts, and who present themselves in ways that are approachable and interesting to outsiders, newcomers and residents who have not been included to this point.

CDAC will be hosting two workshops this month as well. The first being a Sketching Class focusing on human form on Saturday January 17th and the second being an Oil Painting for Beginners Class on Saturday January 24th.

The base is the value leader, the S is the sporty model, with standard 20-inch wheels, and the 300C Platinum is the one featuring the opulent interior. Chrysler believes that the S model will be the volume leader thanks to the aggressive black trim and chunky wheels. This is a surprise because the Dodge Charger is based on the same platform and has the whole “bad boy” attitude in spades, something the 300 looks to be mimicking. The top Platinum would be my choice because it’s interior is so different from the Dodge, something that truly separates the two cars plus it has all the latest safety features including the autonomous braking system when a crash is detected. Much has changed in 10 years for the 300 but the same goodness that was in the 2005 model is still here; it is the refinement that makes this a modern sedan.

be released automated driving technology that will (or can) allow hands-off-the-wheel lane following, braking and speed control, in certain highway driving situations. The goal of this technology is to increase the comfort of an attentive driver on freeways, both in bumper-to-bumper traffic and on long road trips.

The claimed safety value of Super Cruise is that it could mitigate many traffic collisions and improve traffic congestion.

The system sends and receives basic safety information such as location, speed and direction of travel between vehicles that are approaching each other. It will warn drivers and can supplement active safety features, such as forward collision warning, already available on many production cars.

Super Cruise will also add a new lane-centering technology that relies on forward-looking cameras and other sensors to detect markings, curves and other road characteristics. It will also use a series of alerts to communicate with the driver based on human factor research conducted on test tracks.

A simulator is also being used to measure driver eye glance behavior and control interactions in computer-generated automated driving situations.

A combination of radar, ultrasonic sensors, cameras and GPS map data are used by Super Cruise to provide 360 degrees of crash risk detection bubble around the vehicle and enhanced driver assist features.

Super Cruise is still undergoing real-world driving assessments and is expected to make its way into Cadillac production models in 2017.

Honda/Acura – AcuraWatch: A system that takes vehicle operation to the brink of automation, AcuraWatch is a suite of driver-assist technologies that’s offered in the Technology and Elite editions of the new Acura TLX. An interesting new tech included in this package is the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow (LSF).

Unlike other systems of this ilk, it uses both grille-mounted (millimeter-wave) radar and a windshield mounted camera to monitor and maintain a preset vehicle speed and following distance interval to the vehicle directly ahead.

The Low-Speed Follow feature is designed primarily for use in stop and go traffic. If the vehicle ahead slows to a stop, the TLX will also come to a stop. If the vehicle ahead then moves within 3 seconds, the TLX will automatically resume Low-Speed Follow mode. If the vehicle ahead does not move within 3 seconds, then the driver can resume Low Speed see Hands off page 16

GM - 10th Generation OnStar: A 10th generation of GM’s OnStar telematics system with 4G LTE has been rolled out in most of its 2015 model year vehicles. It basically turns the vehicle into a WiFi hotspot that allows occupants to connect up to seven personal devices (smartphones, laptops, tablets etc.) and have them work just like they do at home.

The 4GLTE feature also enhances OnStar’s array of safety and security services and provides a more personal experi-

ence as the OnStar agent can stay on the line as they manage the vehicle data interface.

A new addition is remote diagnostic, which provides a customer with a monthly health status on their vehicle and it can also assist with arranging a maintenance appointment.

A clever smartphone app, called OnStar RemoteLink Key Fob Services, allows an owner to lock or unlock doors, activate the horn and lights, and remotely start a properlyequipped vehicle. It’s included free for five years. OnStar is standard in all 2015 GM vehicles and advisors currently respond to approximately 185,000 calls every day.

All three technologies are competing for the 2015 AJAC Best New Auto Safety Technology Award, which will be announced at the Montreal Auto Show on January 15, 2015.

With regret, I must inform our driving purists that the F-Type – Coupe or Convertible – is not available with a manual transmission. Pity really. Nonetheless, this cat has claws and plenty of forced-fed performance.

Unlike its more traditional siblings, the F-Type doesn’t impart the soothing qualities of a restrained engine note and supple underpinnings. Nope. Nada.

Jaguar literature pins a 0-100km/h time of just 4.3 seconds on the F-Type R Coupe and 4.9 seconds on the slightly tamer S version. The base car arrives at 100km/h in 5.3 seconds, yet there’s far more to this cat’s ability than sprinting.

I particularly enjoyed my tester’s quick, precise steering and exceptional road-feel. Communicative steering allows the driver to feel every little tug and tag the road surface inflicts upon

the wheels, which the F-Type delivers with little filtering. This quality also enables the driver to sense the approaching adhesion limits of the rubber, which is essential for track driving.

I had the opportunity to drive the F-Type on Mission Raceway’s road course last year and know from that experience just how competitively the car performs. There is true sports car DNA here with driving dynamics further hastened by highly responsive brakes, which clamp immediately and remain predictable, linear, and fade-free throughout.

Hugs: Special hug to the vehicle (a white truck) in front of us at the Tim Hortons drive thru . When we went to pay our order they told us the vehicle in front of us paid for it. Thank you!

Slugs: A huge slug to the local courier company that called us and told us that our product was here and that we had to pick it up the next day or they would send it back. We had not received any notification that it was here until that day and later found out that the courier co. had received it on Dec 11. Three and half weeks later they notified us.

Hugs: To the person or persons who decorated the community forest. It was such a nice surprise to round the corner and see all the colorful decorations on the trees. Thanks for creating such beauty!!

Slugs: To our retail gas stations in BC for ripping off consumers for gas prices. Every province in Canada is below 0.95 cents a litre except BC Why are we always being overcharged when most of the oil comes from Alberta and the refineries are in Alberta. It doesn’t make sense.

Hugs: To anyone who knows who the welcome wagon hostess is I would love to see it posted somewhere went on line to “contact us”, responded to the postcard I received in the mailbox, thirdly, tried the email I found in the newspaper, - no response, not feeling very welcome..........just saying.

Slugs: To the lady in the white snow suit walking her unleashed dog in the community forest around 3 pm on Jan 3rd. This dog attacked me while I was walking on the trail and you made no effort to minimize the situation and let it harass and try and bite me. I hope I can return the experience some day.

Hugs: To Gerry, who stopped on the highway near Fort Steele on a snowy December 27 afternoon after our vehicle had spun out of control and landed upside down in the ditch. Gerry pulled over, called the authorities, helped us out of the vehicle and harbored us safely away from the accident scene in his warm vehicle until the police and ambulance arrived. Gerry, you’re a class act; many thanks to a kind Albertan neighbor.

OBITUARY Mary Mindek September 20, 1930 – December 23, 2014 In the early morning hours on Tuesday, December 23, 2014, Mary Mindek passed quietly.

Mary Mindek was born, September 20, 1930, and raised in Fernie BC..

After graduating high school, she went to work for the Trites-Woods Department Store in the accounting department. While still single, she was able to travel and see beyond the horizons of Fernie, but she always came home. The single life did not last long.

Mary’s mother, Anna, would tell the story of when John Mindek’s mother would come to visit. She told the infant John to rock Mary gently in her cradle...”you never know, you may grow up to marry her”. In 1952, Mary did in fact marry John Mindek.

For Mary, her home and her family meant everything and there was no sacrifice too great. After a long life with many tribulations, she spent her final years in her own home in Elko, BC surrounded by the family she cherished so much.

She spent her final years as a “sweet elder lady”.

She will be missed.

Respecting her final wishes, there will be no memorial services.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Fernie Salvation Army.

ZUEHLKE, Ronald Lewis Feb. 14, 1953-Dec. 27, 2014 Ronald Lewis Zuehlke passed away suddenly on Saturday, December 27, 2014 in Cranbrook at the age of 61 years. Ron was born on February 14, 1953 in Lethbridge, Alberta to Otto and Ruby Zuehlke, the third of seven children.

Ron was employed as an automotive partsman at Denham Ford in Cranbrook. He was also an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Ron leaves to mourn his passing many friends, nieces ,nephews and siblings.; Ken (Linda) of High River, Alta., Dave (Wendy) of Qualicum, BC, Edna Zuehlke of Parksville, BC, Terry (Dave) of Vulcan, Alta. and Laura (Dave) Nolan of Lomond, Alta. He also leaves behind his brother-in-law Bob Brown of Parksville, BC. Ron was predeceased by his parents, Otto and Ruby Zuehlke and his sister Marion Brown.

There will be a private family funeral service at a later date and a celebration of life to be held from 1:00-3:00 PM on Saturday January 3, 2015 at the Cranbrook Legion. The family requests that no flowers be sent and would appreciate that donations may be made in Ron’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Okanagan/Kootenay Area Office, 4 – 1551 Sutherland Ave., Kelowna, BC V1Y 9M9 or to the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #24, 803 Cranbrook St. N., Cranbrook, BC V1C 3S2. Gordon spoke out Friday after finding herself in a media spotlight, saying she hopes more B.C. volunteers help fight the epidemic and that they can return home to face less stigma and fear than she

did.

“Don’t be afraid of us when we come home,” she told reporters by phone, insisting medical workers like herself and designated hospitals are well prepared to prevent spread of the disease. “If I had it, it would have ended with me.”

Gordon’s Christmas Day arrival was a lonely one – nobody met her at the airport and she went straight to a hotel room to begin her isolation.

“I would have loved to have somebody come and give me a hug. But I certainly wasn’t about to broadcast that I had just been in one of the countries affected by Ebola because I didn’t know what kind of reaction I was going to get.”

Gordon previously worked overseas in Afghanistan and signed up with the Canadian Red Cross prior to the Ebola outbreak. She trained on procedures in Spain before going to
