Youth in custody after ‘knife incident’ ARNE PETRYSHEN

Police responded to an incident involving a student being cut by a knife just after noon on Wednesday, Jan. 7. The investigation by Cranbrook RCMP found that two students had become involved in a physical altercation in a hallway at Mount Baker Secondary School. Staff Sgt Dave Dubnyk said that during the altercation, one student removed a knife from his pocket and swung it striking the other student in the face. “The victim was taken to the East Kootenay Regional Hospital where he was treated for nonlife threatening injuries,” Dubnyk said. “The alleged suspect was located near the school and taken into custody without incident.” The youth is currently in custody and police will be recommending charges of Assault with a Weapon.

Disengage the air brakes, pop it into gear and flick a switch on the centre console to drop the plow blade and off you go, making order out of the chaos that is a road covered in fluffy white flakes of frozen water. As the blade lowers to the ground it makes a satisfying bump that can be felt through the cabin. A shock allows the blades to weather the many bumps that it inevitably hits going down the hundreds of kilometres of streets in Cranbrook.

At the Monday night city council meeting, CAO Wayne Staudt explained that the engineering department is recommending against installing a crosswalk at St. Mary’s School. The school’s principal sent a request to council asking for a crosswalk on 4th Street South and 16th Avenue South late last year. Engineering staff noted that the location doesn’t meet the criteria set out by the City of Cranbrook Street Sign and Road Marking Manual or the Pedestrian Crossing Control Manual for British Columbia. At the Nov. 3, 2014 city council meeting, the correspondence from Jerelynn MacNeil, principal of St. Mary’s Catholic Independent School, was referred to the engineering department.

Council talks crosswalk Continued from page 1 “Our engineering department reviewed that against the city standards and provincial standards and don’t believe a crosswalk is warranted there or would be a safe situation,” Staudt said. He said they would be in contact with MacNeil about the assessment. Engineering found that the location doesn’t meet the criteria for a crosswalk as there is no pedestrian infrastructure on the school side of the street. “The pedestrian infrastructure is needed so that pedestrians will be led to and away from the crossing rather than walking over private property or on the road,” city staff wrote in the report delivered to council. “The engineering department believes that placing a crosswalk in this location would promote an unsafe walking environment or trespassing.” Coun. Wesly Graham disagreed with engineering’s assessment. “I think a crosswalk should be there,” Graham said. “I attended St. Mary’s as a kid and I crossed there all the time. That’s the natural crossing. I think kids are using it anyway, otherwise they wouldn’t have requested it.” Graham said a crosswalk there would make sense. Staudt said by actually putting a crosswalk there, the city would be encouraging the students to cross there. “So we’re encouraging an unsafe behaviour to get to the crosswalk,” Staudt said. Graham said that a crosswalk would at least alert drivers about the students crossing. Staudt also noted that the city would be taking on some liability by putting a crosswalk there, if it runs counter to the municipal and provincial criteria. Blissett wondered it was possible to install a school zone sign at that location, since the school can’t be seen from there. Staudt noted some of the road falls on St. Mary’s property and further complicates things, especially around putting in a sidewalk to accompany a crosswalk.

Sales of single-family dwellings in Cranbrook rose to 243 in 2014, a 25 per cent increase from one of the lowest volume years in 2013, according to Jason Wheeldon, a local realtor. However, based over a 10 year span, 2014 MLS sales were 6 per cent below average. “Real estate prices are always a function of supply and demand,”

said Wheeldon. “While demand is near it’s 10year average, the supply side within the local markets remain in check. “In 2015, we would expect to see approximately the same level of demand and stabilized inventory levels.” B.C. Assessment has begun to mail assessment notices, with most properties in the region seeing modest increases in value de-

pending on location. However, while B.C. Assessment conclusions are supported by MLS records, some measuring techniques are different. As far as local inventory levels are concerned, 386 single-family dwellings were listed in 2014, 243 of which were absorbed. According to CREA, the national average is $413,649, a figure inflated by sales activity in Vancouver and Toronto.

Removing those two markets puts the average price at $331, 743. Excluding Vancouver and Toronto, Cranbrook home value is 14 per cent lower than the national average. The Cranbrook and District Arts Council would like to thank everyone for a great 2014 and we hope to see you in the Gallery in 2015. This month we proudly present the Columbia Basin Institute of Regional History’s Exhibit titled: Class Through the Looking Glass, which will be in the Gallery from Tuesday, Jan. 13, to Friday, Jan. 30. The Columbia Basin Institute of Regional History has partnered with School District 5, the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance and Cranbrook & District Arts Council to research and assemble a series of web pages & exhibits investigating the history of education in the East Kootenay area. The Columbia Basin Institute is interested in things that evoke memories of what

school was like and how it tied into the larger community. This includes photos of people schools were named after, programmes from past dramatic events, sports trophies, club crests, school publications, photos of teachers and school buildings - all these things (and much more) will help to assemble an understanding of how schools and their communities were linked together. Since its beginning in 2004 the non-profit Columbia Basin Institute of Regional History has worked to make Basin history publicly accessible and inclusive. The Columbia Basin Image Bank, from which the items presented here have been pulled, is a major undertaking of the Institute’s. Currently more than 40,000 images are avail-

My tour guide for the morning was Chad Girvin. Girvin works the day shift driving one of the plow trucks or operating one of the graders. On Tuesday, Derrick Anderson, the Public Works Manager drove me out from the city’s yard to where Girvin was working in the north part of town. He was plowing one neighbourhood. Of course, as the snow is pushed from the surface of the road it forms windrows, the bane of every homeowner’s snow shovelling existence. He indeed drives extra slow through the residential streets to keep the piles to a minimum. As he makes his rounds he deals with obstacles such as parked cars, and has to remember where the sidewalks and concrete barriers begin or end. The instruments in the plow truck are not modern — rather they rely on the skills of operators like Girvin to maneuver safely around the vehicles that dot the streets.

Another series of buttons and gauges controls the rock spreader and salt brine sprayer. At every intersection, we leave patches of sand and gravel. When the weather is cold and icy the plow trucks visit intersection multiple times in a day to deposit more gravel, as vehicle traffic quickly disperses it. The salt brine doesn’t work under -10. The city’s snow plow operation is able to clear the city roads in three to four days, but that’s only if another snowfall doesn’t hit. Multiple snowfalls this week meant that timeline for clearing the snow was drawn out.

After a big snowfall, snow is windrowed into the middle of the street downtown and piled. Eventually, when those piles get high enough, the snow can be transported to the city’s snow storage area on the north end of town, down Theatre Road. At the moment the lot is empty of snow and ready for piling. The city has four plow trucks, two loaders, one grader and three sidewalk plows/sweepers. The crews work on a priority route basis, clearing the main streets and avenues that see the most traffic, as well the routes that emergency

vehicles take. Wheelchair access is also high on the list. Then there is cleanup of public sidewalks and parks. One of the things that really slows the cleanup of the roads down is the traffic itself. Anderson said if nobody was on the roads and the weather cooperated, it would be a much easier and quicker cleanup of the snow. Girvin said that his favourite part of the job is when he can help people out in a small way, perhaps by clearing a route for a senior or clearing someone’s special parking spot. He said he would go out of his way for that as long as it doesn’t take too much time off his route. At the end of my two hour shift, they allow me to get a feel for the truck around the Public Works yard. The heavy truck plows through the piles of snow with ease, as it’s big turbo diesel heart pushes the rear wheels along. The truck doesn’t buck me off like a raging bronco, but rather feels like the trusty old stalwart pony that just keeps chugging along, content to push and pile snow. The day gave me an appreciation for the snow clearing crews of Cranbrook and the fine work they do.

The play that changed history

ne of the most famous and controversial plays of modern times is taking to the community stage in Cranbrook this month, with the Key City Theatre’s presentation of Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot.” “Waiting for Godot” has been voted the most significant English language play written in the 20th century. It seems simple enough, two characters, Estragon and Vladimir, waiting for someone called Godot. But as these two struggle through the agony of waiting, we see the frustration and hope we all experience as we all wait for our own “Godot”. Some of us hoping to win 6/49, or hoping to meet Mr. Right, or see the Canucks win the Stanley Cup. Through daily and annual disappointment we still continue to hope. Samuel Beckett wrote his masterpiece shortly after the end of World War II; a war that ended with the nuclear destruction of two Japanese cities. Mankind now had and still has the means and ability to annihilate itself. In dealing with this new reality Beckett created a play that, in a sense, ‘nuked’ traditional theatre. He wrote a theatre piece that has no plot and little or no character development. It begins in no place and ends in nowhere. The world is turned upside down — the slave becomes the master, the rich become poor, the strong become impotent. But through this upheaval his characters

struggle with the basic human issues of existence. Their struggle is our struggle. Their fears are our fears. “Waiting for Godot” drips with symbolism. Peter Hall, who directed the debut English language version in London in 1955 (Beckett originally wrote the play in French), commented decades later how “Godot” revolutionized theatre. “Waiting for Godot hasn’t dated at all,” Hall wrote in the Guardian. “It remains a poetic masterpiece transcending all barriers and all nationalities. It is the start of modern drama. It gave the theatre back its potency and its poetry. “‘Godot” returned theatre to its metaphorical roots. It challenged and defeated a century of literal naturalism where a room was only considered a room if it was presented in full detail, with the fourth wall removed. Godot provided an empty stage, a tree and two figures who waited and survived. You imagined the rest. “I thought it was blindingly original, turning the undramatic (waiting, doubt, perpetual uncertainty) into tense action. And it was very funny. It took the cross-talk tradition of music hall and made it into poetry.” Paul Kershaw has worked with four of the five actors in “Waiting for Godot” in previous productions. Austin’s extensive background in dance gives him a sense of security on stage which we all appreciate. Most Europeans still try to see things in proportion and not judge all Muslims by the acts of a few, but they are failing more frequently. People are people, and their tolerance has limits. Even in Sweden, the most heroically open country in Europe, where they are expecting more than 100,000 asylum applications this year, former prime minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said just before last September’s election: “I’m now pleading with the Swedish people to have patience, to open your hearts, to see people in high distress whose lives are being threatened. Show them that openness, show them tolerance.” Once more, the Swedes did that. The mainstream parties, all of which share that vision of Sweden, have formed a coalition government that is pledged not to slam the gates shut on asylum-seekers. But the anti-immigration party, the Sweden Democrats, more than doubled its vote and became the third-largest party. Even in Sweden, time is running out on tolerance. Inspired by her holistic ranching background, Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon has launched a province-wide environmental education program for high school teachers and youth leaders. Stewards of the Future offers grants of up to $800 per group to cover field trips, fees for programs and guess speakers, equipment and teacher release time for projects. It is offered for students from grades 9-12, First Nations educators, 4-H, Guide and Scout groups and environment clubs, with an application deadline of Jan. 23 for the spring program. “Through Stewards of the Future, students will have the opportunity to explore issues that affect the land, water and other natural resources in British Columbia,” Guichon said. “The goal of this program is not to solve the challenges we face, but rather to encourage

open discussion and gain a better understanding of the issues that affect our natural surroundings.” Program partners, including the education ministry and B.C. Parks, offer support for projects such as research on invasive species leading to mapping and removal. Mental Health In Children and Youth

This is the fifth in a weekly series on mental health in children and youth by Dr. David Smith

he ages between 12 to 24 are challenging for almost all youth. The biological, social, physical and psychological path to adulthood is not easy, even under the best of circumstances. But coupled with that tough journey is the fact that 75 per cent of all mental health disorders first show up in these teen/young adult years, too. For the majority, the mental health issue is apt to be mild to moderate anxiety or depression; both highly treatable. A number of other very important mental health issues, however, also tend to arise first in the teen years. Here is some general information and links to resources for two specific issues: eating disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Next week we will talk about bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. In all cases, if you suspect your child might be suffering from a specific condition talk to your family doctor or contact the Child and Youth Mental Health clinic provided by the Ministry of Children and Family Development in your nearest community. Eating disorders: The transition from adolescence to adulthood is particularly risky for the development of anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). An estimated 0.9% of young women aged 12 to 24 will develop AN, while about 1.5 % of young women develop BN. While young women are three times more likely to develop these disorders, young men in recent years are increasingly showing to have eating issues. While our societal obsession with thinness may set the scene; genetic risk factors, as well as underlying anxiety, perfectionism

and self-esteem issues are thought to combine to trigger the disorders. Once anorexia starts and the body gets into starvation mode, the brain chemistry changes. As well, the body’s dehydration, altered electrolyte balance and poor nutritional status can lead to heart rhythm issues and other organ function problems. The goal in treating anorexia is to re-feed the person to a healthier weight, and then treat the disordered thinking behind the condition, with one or more of the most effective treatments. These treatments include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), family-based therapy and dialectic behavior therapy (DBT). Re-feeding and psychotherapy may co-occur once the person is progressing to a healthier weight. With bulimia, along with CBT, antidepressant medication has been shown to be helpful. In both conditions, Dr. David medications may be helpful there is a co-occurring Smith ifmood or anxiety disorder, as is often the case. Symptoms of AN to look for in your teen include rapid or significant weight loss, food restriction and obsession with calories or exercise. For BN, weight loss may not be very apparent, but your teen may go to the washroom immediately after eating and run the water. You may see evidence of vomiting in the toilet bowl. Since anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness, it is important to seek help at the first signs. Another source for information is the National Eating Disorders Information Centre, nedic.ca. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Obsessions are repetitive, intrusive and unwanted thoughts that cause the affected

youth great anxiety. Compulsions are the actions or the rituals that he or she must go through to reduce the anxiety caused by the obsessive thoughts. A very common OCD obsession is about contamination or germs, with the compulsion being the need to hand wash repeatedly or avoid any surface, individual or situation where germs might be present. Another common OCD obsession is the fear that something terrible will happen unless the youth takes a specific ritualistic action, like counting, checking, or placing items in a specific order. Genetic risk factors plus an environmental trigger are thought to set off the illness, which tends to run in families. One environmental trigger that may be linked to sudden onset OCD symptoms in some susceptible children is a recent infection with Streptococcus A bacteria (Strep throat.) This burgeoning, but controversial area of research may yield more insights in future years. Treatment with antidepressant-types of medication plus exposure response prevention therapy – a specific form of cognitive behavioural therapy that features gradual exposure to the issue causing the obsessive thoughts and compulsions — has been shown to have success with some individuals. Left untreated, however, OCD can be very debilitating. The longer the OCD goes on, the harder it is to treat. Again, if you are worried about possible signs of OCD in your child, see your family doctor or the Ministry of Children and Family Development CYMH clinic in your region. They may refer your child to specialized services, such as psychiatric services or the specialized OCD program at BC Children’s Hospital. After deciding to return to Cranbrook, Van Steinburg was released from his Hockey Canada registration card by the Midget Ice, rendering him ineligible to play or practice until he was re-registered with Hockey Canada through the Cranbrook Minor Hockey Association.

According to Iddon, Van Steinburg has been considered ineligible since Dec. 18, 2014. Regulation 26.1 of the KIJHL Constitution dictates the usage of an ineligible player will result in the team forfeiting the game regardless of the score. That rule is handed down to the KIJHL via B.C. Hockey and Hockey Canada. Van Steinburg played in the Nitros 8-1 victory Jan. 2 in Invermere, registering two assists. Prior to Jan. 2, Van Steinburg’s only other action with the Dynamiters came Dec. 16 at Creston. “If that player is on the ice, gets hurt and it’s anything more serious than what his basic medical coverage would entail, he is not covered by any supplemental insurance,” Iddon said of why ineligibility is problematic. “It’s a unique experience why this happened…Usually, [player

Committee Opportunity Board of Variance The City of Kimberley invites applications from community members interested in becoming a member of the Board of Variance. The Board of Variance consists of three community members appointed by City Council. The Board is responsible for reviewing and making decisions on requests to vary, or relax, zoning bylaw regulations such as building size and siting requirements. Although the meeting schedule can vary, the Board typically meets for approximately one hour at 10am on the 1st Thursday of each month. Additional time commitment involves review of applications and supporting information prior to the meetings. All meetings are open to the public. Decisions made by the Board directly influence the form and character of Kimberley’s built environment. Preferred candidates will have excellent communication and critical decision making skills and be able to evaluate the impacts of variance decisions on the subject property, adjacent properties and the broader community. A demonstrated interest or experience in land use planning, urban design or building design and construction is an asset. Previous committee or board decision making experience is preferred. The disciplinary rule is a new regulation dictated by Hockey Canada and introduced at all levels of junior hockey this season. In previous years, the KIJHL suspended coaches to discipline the use of ineligible players, but games were not defaulted. Rules and regulations handed down by Hockey Canada govern all bodies under the Hockey Canada umbrella, including the KIJHL. The only option a league has in making alterations to rules and regulations handed down by Hockey Canada, is to make them more strict or stringent. A total of four KIJHL games have been defaulted due to player ineligibility this season. Iddon acknowledged that number is high for player-ineligibility incidents, estimating only one or two player ineligibility incidents will arise in an average season.

On Oct. 25, the Kelowna Chiefs defaulted what would have been a 5-0 victory over the Osoyoos Coyotes. Shortly after that on Nov. 7, the Nelson Leafs defaulted what would have been a 5-2 triumph over the Creston Valley Thunder Cats. Then on Dec. 12, the Kamloops Storm defaulted what would have been a 7-3 victory over the 100 Mile House Wranglers. All player scoring statistics from defaulted games remain intact. What was originally an 8-1 victory for the Kimberley Dynamiters over the Columbia Valley Rockies now stands as two lost points in the standings for the Nitros and the seventh win of the season for the Rockies. That shift makes life in the Eddie Mountain Division much more congested. While the Fernie

Ghostriders (28-6-1-2, 59 points) sit comfortably in first place, there is a three-team race for the coveted second spot in the division. Following the decision regarding the Dynamiters-Rockies game Friday, the Golden Rockets (19-15-0-5, 43) retain second place in the division. The Dynamiters (19-15-1-3, 42) sit in third, while the Creston Valley Thunder Cats (18-13-1-4, 41) remain one point back in fourth place. The Rockies (724-0-6, 20) remain fifth. With the KIJHL regu-

lar season quickly wearing thin, each point counts. The Rockets have 13 games remaining on their slate, while the Dynamiters have 14 games left on their schedule. With 16 games left to be played, the Thunder Cats have two games in hand on the Nitros and three in hand on the Rockets. The Dynamiters will look to put the mix up behind them this Friday, Jan. 9, when they travel to Fernie to face the Ghostriders.

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: Twelve years ago, I married my best friend, lover and the woman I believed to be my partner for life. Before we married, my wife and I were physically active: hiking, biking, skiing, rollerblading, you name it. We enjoyed movies, plays, board games and talking for hours. We also had a fantastic sex life. Seven years ago, all of that began to change. She lost interest in outdoor activities and board games. Hours of talking have been replaced with hours in front of the TV or staring into our cellphones and computers. Our sex life became nearly nonexistent. We’ve both put on a little weight, but for me, it’s 10 pounds, and for my wife, it’s 40. I still think she’s incredibly sexy and tell her so. I have maintained a regular fitness regimen and a few years ago started competing in triathlons. My wife views this as encroaching on our social life. I love my wife, but I’m no longer in love with her the way I once was. Not long ago, we had a heart-to-heart, and I said I no longer wanted to be married to her and told her why. She responded by telling me she recognized that I had been pulling away and understood why. She said she wished things could be different, but she would move forward. Since “the talk,” my wife has been extremely clingy and insecure, wanting to know my whereabouts and activities at all times. Where I suffered sexual frustration in silence for years, my wife is now quite vocal about having her sexual needs met. Annie, I can’t manufacture feelings for her, sexual or otherwise, and I am still leaning toward the exit. I feel staying is dishonest, but leaving means I’m not giving our relationship a chance. What do I do? -- Crossroads in California Dear Crossroads: Your wife doesn’t want you to leave. That is why she is clingy, insecure and demanding more sex. In the past seven years, you have gradually become disillusioned with your married life, but you only told your wife about it recently. You haven’t given her the time to work on it. Instead of looking for a justification to leave, please get into counseling with your wife. See whether you can find the “best friend” and “partner for life” you married. It’s not too late. Dear Annie: I am a 67-year-old widow. My husband died six years ago. We enjoyed a good sex life, and I miss it very much. I would like to relieve myself (masturbation), but I don’t know how the Catholic Church feels about it, and I don’t want to ask my priest. Is it a mortal or venial sin? Or are they more lenient these days? Can you please, please help me? -- Frustrated Dear Frustrated: According to the New Catholic Encyclopedia, masturbation is still a mortal sin. However, there are “conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen or even extenuate moral culpability,” making it a venial sin. We know the Church’s position matters to you, but our position is that masturbation is a perfectly reasonable alternative for someone who is widowed. Please consider talking to your priest about this. He has undoubtedly heard it before. Dear Annie: I read the letter from “California Patient,” who complained about the long waits at the doctor’s office. I would suggest “California” talk directly with the physician regarding the long wait times. When I experienced this same problem with my kids’ pediatrician, I discovered the doctor was not aware of the problem. It was his staff that scheduled the appointments too close together. The 2015 Lincoln MKC like that driven by actor Matthew McConaughey in commercials is a comfortable haven whose interior is so quiet it invites contemplative thoughts - and not just by McConaughey. In its first model year, the compact MKC is the smallest sport utility vehicle ever to express Lincoln’s brand of luxury. There’s soft Scottish leather seat trim and welcoming “puddle lights” that not only courteously illuminate the ground by the front doors but project the Lincoln logo there, too,

when a driver with key fob approaches. Even shifting the MKC is different, as Park, Reverse and other gears are activated by a vertical line of push buttons on the dashboard, rather than a gear shift lever. Yet, the MKC, which has seating for five, has a starting retail price that’s less than that of many competitors and less than what many people seem to expect. Specifically, starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge, is $33,995 for the base, 2015 MKC with front-wheel drive. The lowest starting retail price for a 2015 MKC with all-wheel drive is

only helps ease its way into parallel parking spots, its “park-out” feature helps ease the way out of tight parking spots, too. Much of the technology can be quickly tailored to a driver’s tastes. For example, the lanekeeping feature can be set to just alert a driver when the vehicle begins to wander out of its lane, alert and aid the driver to get the vehicle back in the lane or just aid the driver. The MKC tester felt stress-free, particularly when the SUV was in “comfort” mode, where suspension damping allowed for a compliant ride, even with optional 19-inch wheels at the corners. Steering was responsive but not touchy, with good on-centre feel. The uplevel engine provided strong power with nary a sensation of turbo lag, thanks to a three-port exhaust manifold head that separates the exhaust from certain cylinders as it heads to the twin-scroll turbocharger. This engine also is set for the Ford Mustang, but the MKC got it first. Ford Motor Co. owns both Ford and Lincoln brands. In the test MKC that weighed nearly 4,000 pounds, power came on strongly but not wildly, and passengers who hadn’t noticed the “EcoBoost” badge on the liftgate assumed this SUV had six-cylinder power. But fuel economy was nowhere near the federal government ratings of 18 miles per gallon in city driving and 26 mpg on the highway. With some aggressive driving and a majority of city driving, the tester averaged just 17.8 mpg. With a 15.5-gallon gasoline tank, this translated into only a 275-mile range. It also took some getting used to the brightly illuminated, orange letters of the “SelectShift” gear buttons. On the centre console, they’re not where a driver expects them to be. Additionally, the start push button sits at the bottom of the SelectShift buttons and is not well differentiated. Standard safety equipment in every MKC includes electronic stability control, antilock brakes and seven air bags.

1904 Death on the mountainside ... Edward Trowse, who was living on a ranch belonging to D. H.Ross and E. Pountney, on Gold Creek, for the benefit of his health, met with instant death last Thursday while out on a mountain, by the accidental discharge of his rifle. The accident was a most distressing one, and the deceased leaves a wife and daughter to mourn his untimely death. The remains were brought to Cranbrook Tuesday and interred in the cemetery, Rev. Thompson having charge of the service. Mrs. Trowse and child left that evening for their former home in Petersburg, N. D. The story of the accident as told by Mr. Ross, who accompanied Mr. Trowse on the trip is as interesting as it is sad. They had left the camp together and started to climb one of the big hills on Gold Creek, about, twenty miles south of Wardner. After going up one side they passed over the crest and started down again. A short distance down they reached a rocky shelving, and Mr. Trowse, who was in the lead, stopped to take advantage of the magnificent view presented. Bending down in a half sitting posture he placed his rifle across his knees and took a pair of field glasses and

swept the valley. In the distance was a smoke rising from some camp, and passing the glasses back to Ross, who was about three feet behind, he asked if it was a certain logging camp. Ross put the glasses to his eyes, and then followed a report. Dropping the glass he saw Trowse lying face down on the hillside, his legs bent up under him, and the rifle a little below where it had caught on a ledge of rock. It was evident that in rising the rifle had slipped, the hammer striking the rock. The bullet, which was a 30-30, had passed through the body at the left nipple, resulting in instant death. It was impossible for Mr. Ross to do anything alone, so he turned to the camp to break the news to the wife, and his partner, Pountney. Returning with the latter, the body was slid down the mountain on a deer hide, and then placed over a horse and carried to camp, where it was held until Sunday when it was taken to Wardner. On Monday coroner Moffat and Dr. Green visited Wardner and held an investigation, the finding of the coroner being in accordance with the facts given by Mr. Ross. The Bean Contest ... The bean contest instituted, by W. F. Tate, the jeweler, with an elegant silver tea set as a prize, aroused an immense amount of interest from Macleod to Kootenay Landing. The guesses were numerous, but Mrs. E. Elwell, was the fortunate one, her guess being 32,250 and the total number

of beans in the jar being 32,203. Mr. Tate is deserving of considerable praise for the amusement he afforded the people by his contest, the beauty of the prize, and the liberal conditions, as it cost no one a cent to make a guess. The counting of the beans was a big task. The committee consisted of Rev. Bealchiam, M. A. Beale, W. J. Atchison, W. Towers, L. S. Murdock, Dan and John Bremner. Mr. Tate kept the tally while the committee did the counting. After the result had been ascertained the guests were treated to a fine oyster supper by Mrs. Tate. The Shaft At Old Town ... Gus Theis was in from Old Town during the week having some repairs made to the pump used in the new shaft being sunk on Perry Creek. The boys are meeting with the usual mishaps and annoyances, but they have been too long at the front to let trifles trouble them. It was found necessary to move the plant some distance and start a new shaft on account of quicksands and slimes encountered, after down twenty feet. They have the second shaft well under way and will be at it again in a few days. Private Hospital … Miss Moss has opened a private hospital in Cranbrook and is prepared to take cases and give them the best of care. The lady is a graduate of St. Luke’s hospital, Vancouver, and comes to Cranbrook highly recommended. Skating at the Rink ... Great in-

terest is manifested in skating at the rink this year, and nearly every night large crowds are in attendance. The rates for tickets are as follows: Season ticket, good for lady and gentleman -- $5.00; Ten tickets, for ladies – 1.00 Adults, five skates – 1.00 Children, 10 tickets – 1.00 Rink open from 2 to 11 p. m. 1905 Imperial Bank … A big deal was consummated this week by which the imperial bank secures the post office corner of R. E. Beattie and will take possession as soon as a new store building that is being constructed for Mr. Templeton just east of Manning & Siddons’ corner is ready. This will mean that Mr. Templeton will move his stock and that Mr. Beattie will move the post office to the new location as soon as possible. The new building will be one story, 90x25 feet with a fifteen foot ceiling, and a plate glass front. It will be ready by March first. We Have A Winner … The doll in Wilson, the jeweler’s show window, was won by Miss Jessie McCowan, who made 5,010 correct words out of “W. H. Wilson, Jeweler and Optician.” 1906 Clean Clothes … It is easy to have clean clothes when there is a first class laundry in town. You can’t afford to patronize Chinese when you can get your work done by white people in a white way and

at prices that will appeal to anyone who wants good work. Crows Nest Steam Laundry, Cranbrook, B. C. A Successful Dance ... On New Year’s night the new fraternity hall was opened by a ball given by the I.O.O.F. and K. of P. Lodges of this city, who built the hall. The handsome hall with its magnificent floor was a beautiful sight, and the few colored decorations were just enough to relieve the plain whiteness of the plastered walls. There were over two hundred people present and never before in the history of Cranbrook has there been a dance where the participants seemed to have such a good time. One dance followed another until after 12 o’clock when refreshments were served. But little time was devoted to this part of the programme, however, as the dancers were anxious to get on the floor again. And not until nearly three o’clock would they consent to the playing of the “Home, Sweet Home” waltz. Oriental Novelties … This is A Great Opportunity to buy Novelties. Wong Fong, who has a store on Armstrong Ave., says that his stock is too big. He has just returned from China where he bought a big stock of oriental novelties, silk goods, brass ornaments, etc., and he must sell, no matter how low, to raise the cash. He will have some great bargains the next two weeks. Remember the place, opposite Imperial Hotel, Armstrong Avenue:

Environmental Assessment of the Proposed Baldy Ridge Extension Project

Teck Coal Limited (Proponent) is proposing to extend the working life of the Elkview mine by developing and operating the proposed Baldy Ridge Extension Project (proposed Project). The proposed Project would be located approximately 2.5 km east of Sparwood, British Columbia, and would produce an estimated 6.8 million tonnes of clean coal per year. The proposed Project is subject to review under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act. The Proponent must obtain an environmental assessment certificate before any work can be undertaken on the proposed Project. However, prior to submission of an application (Application) for a certificate by the Proponent, Environmental Assessment Office of British Columbia (EAO) must first approve Application Information Requirements. Key to the Application Information Requirements is the identification of Valued Components to be studied and the areas within which the studies would occur. This task is done through the Valued Components Selection Document. To provide information about Valued Components Selection, EAO invites the public to attend an Open House.
