Snowfall matches record dump dating back to 1937

The sheer volume of snow falling made the first day of school closures a no-brainer, but day two was chalked up to unsafe pathways to and from school.

Classes will resume today, but it’s unlikely that the snow lingering on sidewalks will be cleared and that’s prompted Gloster to turn to the community for help.

“Now we’re making a public appeal to ask folks who live in the vicinity of schools to help clear sidewalks and pathways in front of their homes so students can have a safe passage to school,” he said.

“It’s those youngest ones we’re worried about. We’re also asking that motorists be hyper vigilant around kids who are making their way to school.”

Although the school district made the decision with safety in mind, they didn’t escape criticism.

Grade 12 students who are already facing a truncated school year due

to last year’s teachers strike have lost another block of classes, and complaints have filtered into the school district office.

“It’s not an ideal situation, but we’re used to adjusting,” said Gloster.

Adjusting might just be the theme of the snow storm.

Okanagan College and UBC Okanagan lost at least a day of classes, and the airport saw 10 flights canceled due to unmanageable ice.

With a great deal of effort, things returned to normal in those locations.

All that’s left is cleaning up side streets and sidewalks.

The city clears snow and de-ices municipal roads (excluding highways 33 and 97) based on their priority status. Priority 1 includes high-traffic roads such as Gordon Drive. Priority 2 includes collector roads such as Richter Street, bus routes, school zones, town centers and emergency vehicle stations. Priority 3 includes local roads within neighbourhoods

and Priority 4 includes laneways.

While the city keeps the roads clear, residents are responsible for clearing snow from their private driveway and sidewalks adjacent to their property within a day of the snow falling.

Some residents find snow clearing a difficult task, particularly seniors and those with an injury or disability.

The city encourages residents to help out their neighbours by becoming a Snow Buster. Kelowna Fire Department is also asking residents to clear snow away from fire hydrants in front of their property.

This ensures easy access in the case of emergency.

Okanaganites are still digging themselves out of what shaped up to be the biggest snowstorm in 78 years.

“In Kelowna we recorded 33 centimetres at the airport, but there have also been reports from respectable sources around town of 38 centimetres of snow,” said Lisa Coldwells, a meteorologist with Environment Canada.

That matches a record set in Nov. 12 and 13, 1937. The measurement taken near the city core after a twoday storm at that time was also 38 centimetres.

“This was a remarkable weather event, not only in Kelowna,” she said. “We had records set from Kamloops to Salmon Arm and down to Penticton. All across the Southern Interior, where it was dry, they had an amazing amount of snow.”

The reason for the unusually heavy

dump of snow came from what meteorologist Doug Lundquist called “a clash of the air masses.”

Moist, warm air from the southern US states collided overhead with a cold blast of winter air from Alberta.

“We are in the in-between zone,” Lundquist said. “It’s a clash of air masses —a big clash.”

Going forward, however, the weather drama appears to be over— Coldwells doesn’t predict more precipitation records being shattered “We will return to what I like to call typical January weather,” she said. “The Okanagan will stay under a dull grey blanket for the next week, with temperatures ranging from 2 C to -2C. So it will take a while for the snow to melt.”

It’s not great news for Central Okanagan school superintendent Hugh Gloster.

For the first time in his 35 years in the district a “snow day” was called, shuttering schools for two days.

championship Tuesday afternoon, landing at the Kelowna International Airport just minutes after the club’s latest acquisition, Leon Draisaitl.

Earlier in the day, the Rockets made official the long-rumoured trade which saw them acquire the German-born Draisaitl from the Prince Albert Raiders for forward Kris Schmidli, defenceman Dalton Yorke and three bantam draft picks, including a first-rounder in 2015.

Draisaitl, one of the top 19-year-old players in the world, spent the first half of the season with the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers where he had two goals and nine points in 37 games.

While Draisaitl was initially disappointed with the thought of returning to junior, he said there’s a big silver lining in landing with a potential Memorial Cup contender.

“It’s never easy if you get sent down, obviously it’s my dream to play in the NHL,” Draisaitl said.

“So I wanted to play for a team that’s most likely going to be good and going far into playoffs, so that’s something I wanted and

I’m happy it happened.”

Just last month, the Rockets picked up one of the junior game’s elite defenceman in Josh Morrissey, a close friend and teammate of Draisaitl’s in Prince Allbert.

While the trades came at a cost, Hamilton said the Rockets did what they believe gives them the best chance to celebrate a championship come this spring.

“The opportunity to get Leon in the mix was a great deal for our hockey club,” said Hamilton. “(Draisaitl) is a great big centreman who is going to add tremendous depth to our team.

“We gave up five real good players overall and draft picks to get these guys, I honestly believe they give us a real good chance to win, that’s what it’s all about here right now.”

Draisaitl will make his Rockets debut Wednesday night at Prospera Place against the Vancouver Giants.

Meanwhile, Hamilton was part of Team Canada’s management committee for the world junior hockey championship in Toronto and Montreal.

Owners of almost 84,000 properties throughout the Central Okanagan are finding out what the B.C. Assessment Authority feels their properties were worth.

The 2015 property assessment notices are currently being delivered across B.C., including here in the Central Okanagan.

“Most homes in the Central Okanagan are worth more in value compared to last year’s assessment roll,” said Jason Sowinski, deputy assessor.

“Most home owners in the Central Okanagan will see modest changes in the zero to plus-10 per cent range.”

Overall, the Central Okanagan’s total assessment roll value increased to $42.3 billion from $40.4 billion last year.

Of note, said Sowinski, was a total of almost $1.06 billion added through subdivisions, rezoning and new construction.

For 2015, Kelowna and West Kelowna were added to a program B.C. Assessment has been using since 2009 in the Lower Mainland that uses high definition aerial and street level photography to identify changes to all properties.

Properties on Westbank First Nation land, as well as in Vernon were also included as part of the expanded program.

As a result, a total

of $105 million in additional assessed value was identified in West Kelowna and another $245 million more in Kelowna was identified, said Sowinski.

In the past the “walk and knock” method was used by B.C. Assessment for identifying property improvements, such as the addition of garages and car ports.

But Sowinski said because of the labourintensive nature of that approach, only select areas of a municipality could be covered in any given year. With better technology, entire taxing jurisdictions— municipalities—can now be surveyed.

In addition, to the overall increase in residential property values, owners of commercial and industrial properties in the Central Okanagan will see changes ranging up to 10 per cent more, said Sowinksi.

While there is

not direct, identical correlation between increased assessment values and a rise in annual municipal property taxes on a given house or condo, more valuable properties typically see their taxes go up depending on how much money a municipality wants to raise to pay for services and projects each year.

Typically in Kelowna, the annual municipal tax increase has been around two per cent.

For 2015, in Kelowna, the average residential assessment rose to $521,000 from $491,000 in 2014, in Lake Country to $519,000 from $494,000, in West Kelowna to $506,000 from $473,000 and in Peachland to $461,000 from $430,000.

The average assessment for strata property, such as condominuims in Kelowna rose to $216,000 from $207,000 last year.

The District of Lake Country will hold a pair of open houses to answer questions and provide information on the district’s move to use the Alternative Approval Process (AAP) to borrow money for the purchase of a portion of the CN Rail corridor running through

Lake Country.

District council met on Tuesday night to officially set the AAP in motion, as council proposes to raise taxes by 1.68 per cent to borrow half of its share of the $5.1 million to purchase the corridor, with the other half coming as a loan from the City of Kelowna.

and either Jan. 14 or 21 at Lake Country municipal hall as the district will look to provide information on the attempted purchase and the AAP to residents of Lake Country.

The district has also established a dedicated page on its web site (okanganway.ca) with information on the AAP and will send a direct mail-out to residents to educate the public on the process.

“We have a huge communications process that we are undertaking with the AAP,” said Lake Country corporate services manager Reyna Seabrook, who added newspaper advertisements and

regular mail would also be used to try and get the information out to the public.

The AAP is open to all qualified electors in the district, some 9,315 residents, according to the 2011 census done by Statistics Canada.

Electors opposed to the borrowing of the funds must sign and return an electoral response form.

The forms will be available at the district office and on its web site beginning on Jan. 14 and will be available until the deadline of Feb. 23.

If the number of responses is less than 10 per cent (931 residents), the district will be able to borrow the money.

“The corridor needs to be protected and it can certainly be a huge asset for Lake Country,” said Mayor James Baker.

The amount each jurisdiction will put toward the $22 million purchase came down to the length of the rail corridor through its boundaries.

With 16 km in Lake Country, the community is being asked to come up with $5.1 million total while Kelowna’s share is $7.1 million and NORD’s being $1.9 million.

The other $7.3 million is expected to come from other sources of which at this point are unknown.

Lake Country does not, hence the need to raise taxes and accept the loan from Kelowna.

District councillors have been supportive of the attempted purchase with several saying Lake Country residents they have heard from have been positive about the move.

Whatever the feeling of the public, it has definitely got people talking in the community.

“I know I have had my phone and emails ringing off the hook since this became public,” said Coun. Bill Scarrow.

“This is one of those things that is an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” added

They weren’t expecting a new year’s baby, but Lake Country residents Mike Thompson and Andrea Heagle couldn’t have been happier about the early arrival of their adorable little bundle.

Miller John Thompson was born at 2:32 a.m., Jan.1—over two weeks ahead of schedule— and weighed in at seven pounds three ounces.

The proposed duration of the PMP is from May 1, 2015 to April 30, 2020. A draft copy of the proposed PMP and maps of the proposed treatment areas may be examined online at fortisbc.com or by contacting the Applicant listed above.

Health officials were first informed about Miller’s birth, given that he arrived at Kelowna General Hospital and his parents were easily able to give consent to release their names to the media.

The health authority did not have any information about the home-birth family until after the New Year’s baby announcement was made. Nor were they given consent to release that family’s contact information.

It was after a family member went online after the fact to get things straight, when health authority representatives learned about conflicting information.

Miller’s parents, however, aren’t bothered one way or the other.

He’s their first New Year’s baby and his arrival date is far less important than his overall well being.

“I don’t want to be

cliche, but we were just happy to have a healthy boy,” said Miller’s dad, Mike. “He’s been phenomenal, He barely squawks, he eats and sleeps really well—it’s all been really good.”

The family was just being discharged from the hospital Friday morning and mother Andrea looked calm, collected and ready to get on with the business of raising an up and coming hockey star.

At least that’s what dad-Mike is hoping— and if Miller’s birth story is any indication, it may be in the cards.

“We were at home and Andrea felt that her water broke,” he said.

That happened at around 1 p.m., but instead of panicking the couple decided to stay home to watch the Canada US junior hockey game.

“It went great… she had no drugs or anything, and we got to enjoy him right away,” said Mike, adding that the staff at KGH are “phenomenal.”

Awaiting Miller at home is his big sister by five years, Cameron Rose.

“She’s so excited, she’s going to be a great big sister,” said Mike.

Taxpayers take a hit again Tax and fee increases have become as sure a sign that a new year has arrived as champagne and fireworks.

According to the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, B.C. residents can expect to see hikes in the rates they pay for MSP, EI, CPP, BC Hydro, ICBC and BC Ferries.

Among the increases for 2015, the Medical Services Premium Tax goes up $33 a year for individuals and $66 for families; EI and CPP taxes will go up $23 in 2015; BC Hydro announced a six per cent hike in electricity rates for April 1, which amounts to an estimated $72 for the average home; BC Ferries will boost fares 3.9 per cent; and ICBC is expected to raise basic auto insurance, estimated to be $36 for the average car.

“Every government and agency seems to get their pound of flesh, and one wonders when enough will be enough,” said Jordan Bateman, B.C. director for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. The simple answer to that question seems to be never.

BC Ferries shows that even the threat of decreasing revenues and a damaged economy can’t restrain the Crown corporation’s temptation to gouge its customers. A Union of B.C. Municipalities report shows that fare increases have driven down ridership on BC Ferries at a cost of $2.3 billion to the provincial GDP. But the potential of an economic downturn isn’t enough to deter BC Ferries from bringing in the increase that will more than offset the gains from its much-heralded elimination of the fuel surcharge.

But perhaps the most troubling increase is the one to basic auto insurance premiums. The increase comes despite the government funneling more than $150 million from the Crown corporation into provincial coffers, and it will be targeted at safe drivers along with those actually responsible for any increase in claims.

It’s clear that when it comes to fee hikes, fairness and financial returns play no part in the equation. It’s just a new year’s plunge into the taxpayers’ wallet.

New Kelowna council faces first test at balancing city budget Kelowna’s new city council will get its first opportunity to make a direct impact City on the wallets of its constituents later Confidential this month.

In a few weeks, the council— ALISTAIR featuring a new mayor and four new councillors—will take a day to deliberate WATERS over the city’s 2015 budget, and in doing so will give the first indication of the type of council it plans to be.

In the past, the city has seen councils viewed as either more either business- or socially-minded, winning praise and criticism from supporters and opponents of both.

In his inaugural remarks after being sworn in as mayor last month, Colin Basran made it clear what sort of city he wants to lead.

Repeating his election campaign slogan of making Kelowna “open for opportunity,” he was clear to not fall into on camp or the other, instead saying for him, opportunity was more than just business, it was about social programs too.

So while the new council will be handed a budget prepared under the previous administration, some may feel it may not represent the views and wishes of the current council. But that’s not likely the case.

With five returnees and the at least two, if not more, of the newcomers hailing from a strong business background, the type of budget they will be asked to approve is likely the type of budget they would have asked for in the first place.

But, as the old saying goes, the devil’s in the details.

And it is those details that get ironed out during the one-day budget deliberation each January.

Basran has said he feels a two per cent residential property tax increase would be acceptable to the public, a position held by his predecessor Walter Gray. So,it’s unlikely city taxpayers will be handed a tax hike any bigger despite some big ticket projects on the near horizon including Kelowna’s new $48 million RCMP detachment building.

While 2014 was not a stellar year for construction in the city, there was an increase over 2013 and that will help as the city hall finance department bolsters this year’s budget with construction revenue from last year.

They will also be helped by an increase in property assessments this year, with the average city house increasing in value by five to 10 per cut according to the B.C. Assessment Authority.

So, while half the new council did not have any input into the preparation of the 2015 budget, it appears the document should be one the council as a whole will have little difficulty approving.

And in that regard, it appears to be business as usual at city hall.

Chicken farming standards need to be improved

To the editor: Re: the trouble at three or four closed Abbotsford chicken factories and the killing off 18,000 fowl due to an infection.

Chicken consumers, me included, do not realize how the chickens live and survive at these farms. There are up to and more than 30,000 chickens per building, all standing about in their own feces— some chicken barns are not cleaned out for many months and sometimes years — so the build-ups are substantial.

Then, the chickens eat fortified food which includes both hormones and antibiotics. The chickens have such heavy breasts that standing up for any time at all is difficult so they end up eating and laying about in their neighbours’ feces.

In those feces are parasites that live on the blood of the chickens.

In the first few weeks, the farmer expects to lose over a 1,000 chicks due to poor conditions and competition for space and food. The chickens never see the sun or fresh air.

The chickens are ready for the factory butcher shop in 40 days thanks to the abundance of the growth hormones and appetite stimulus in their feeds.

I think back to when I was a little boy growing up on a small mixed farm. Our chickens ran freely about the farm and during the potato season and strawberry season, the chickens would be allowed to visit there and dine on the potato beetle and insects that they would be able to spot at eye level.

We had no need for spraying our potatoes or any other part of our kitchen gardens due to the chickens working.

What standards do we want to obtain for our food chain? Any chicken will do as long as it is cheap and quick, no matter how the chicken suffered getting to our pot? Our school children should be compelled to visit these farms to see how the chickens live—and take their parents along.

Our food animals were never meant to live this tightly packed and in such dirty conditions.Can we not do better?

To the editor: Unfortunately, over the Christmas period I had to spend a lot of time dropping off relatives to Kelowna General Hospital.

While doing this, I became more and more frustrated with the design of the new main entrance drop-off area at KGH. It is so poorly designed that there are only two drop off bays with the rest of the area being space used for vehicles to be able to turn around to leave the drop-off space.

At one stage there were two service buses parked waiting for patients which blocked the whole area and when one bus wanted to leave, it had to reverse back on to the main road to get out.

Canada Post criticized for not reaching out enough to help its patrons To the editor: Often a business, which raises its prices but neglects customer service and forfeits most common sense, may be doomed to fail.

Not so with Canada Post.

The other day I witnessed at a local postal outlet how a parcel was returned to a customer with the notation that the address was unknown, and this even though the recipient’s name, town and postal code were verified by the clerk as being correct.

Only the suffix of the street name differed by a mere three letters—namely Templeton instead of Templewood.

Subsequently, the customer had to pay for the returned parcel (I have no idea why) and, if she chose, would need the shell out new portage to mail the item again, which by that time was worth less than the postage, as the customer informed the clerk.

Whatever happened to the postal carriers’ creed: “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”

When postal codes were introduced, we were told that mail was sorted by those codes and, therefore, the parcel should have reached its destination.

At the same outlet I was buying international stamps for 28 addressed envelopes (in my hand at the time) to send them overseas.

Although there is no GST to be charged on international postage in excess of $5, provided that the item is posted at the same time (something many people might not be aware of), I was charged GST on the $70 purchase.

When I protested the GST charge, I was told that it was my responsibility to tell the clerk that I was purchasing GST exempt postage.

I believe that the clerk should ask customers if the items are to be mailed at that time, rather than the customers being expected to know all the GST rules.

BC Ferries has already announced that it is eliminating the fuel surcharge on their fares due to the fall of diesel prices. Yet Canada Post, so far, continues to gouge us with their fuel surcharge.

Time and again, I have found a notification in my mail box, informing me that I may pick up an item at the nearest postal outlet because no one was home.

Well, I was home almost every time but the letter carrier did not even bother ringing the door bell.

It is certainly easier to card an item rather than handling a registered or bulky item and meeting the people on the route.

When I grew up I was told that, if I ever were to have a problem to speak to the nearest police(man) or a letter carrier and ask for help.

Today, I do not even know who our letter carrier is because they change as often as the weather.

I don’t know if the above noted failures in customer service are the result of privatization or just a common lack of personal responsibility for one’s chosen occupation.

It’s that time of the year again. 2014 is now history and 2015 is a mystery. Over the next few weeks investors will be receiving year-end statements from those who manage and oversee their investments. Prudent investors will look very carefully at each year-end statement. They will scrutinize the revenue earned by each company from all sources and the expenses incurred by that company together with fees charged. They will be looking at the rate of return for each of their investments. They will identify the winners and losers. Investors want a return on their money, the higher the return the better. They will divest themselves of, or sell, an investment that does not produce a return and reinvest any money recouped with a company that will produce a return.

Prudent investors will also take a good long look at the types of investments that make up their portfolio. Investment advisors almost always advise investors to “diversify” their investments, which is just a fancy way of saying “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” We all know the danger of putting all your eggs in one basket. If your single investment increases in value you may be set for life. If the same investment crashes you may lose everything and have to start over again, (if that is possible).

Prudent investors put some of their money in the stock market, some in the bond market, some in the commodities market and some in the bank in the form of GIC’s. Others simply invest in Mutual Funds that hold a large basket of many different stocks and/or bonds. If we diversify our investments we spread the risks of investment.

If the stock market goes down, the bond market will hopefully go up and offset the loss, thus protecting our principal and ensuring the health of our investment portfolio.

As prudent investors, we should also look at how we are investing another one of our most precious resource: our time. It is important to remember that once time is spent, we can never get it back. We must ask if the time we spend is properly diversified among many activities, or do we put most all of our time in one basket?

We should look at the rate of return on the time we spend on our daily activities. We must ask if any given activity enriches us or depletes our physical and emotional resources.

Many of us invest a lot of our time working at a job, career, business, or other calling. We receive a return on that investment: compensation and the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that comes from honest labor. We have to look at our attitude toward work. Some people say: “I live to work!” Others say “I work to live.” Some love their jobs so much that they can’t spend enough time on the job. Others don’t seem to have a passion for their work. They work at those jobs because they need to do something in order to live. Work is an important investment.

Each one of us must consider the amount of time we spend working very carefully. Investing too much time and too much of energy and passion on work can cause stress, heartache, take years off your life and also keep you from investing time in other very important areas of your life. Simply punching the clock in the morning and waiting for the day to end can

also be debilitating. This attitude drains energy and passion for work, and it can seep into other aspects of one’s life.

Many reading this article may no longer be in the labor market due to retirement or other reasons. Regardless of our employment status, we still need to be intellectually challenged and physically active. The retired need to find satisfaction in honest toil. One may find the needed activity and mental stimulation through volunteerism. Schools, hospitals, community centers, museums and churches simply could not function without volunteers. Those who volunteer will tell you of the many benefits they reap.

Whether we are in the workforce or retired, we need to strive to find a proper balance between the time we spend at work and the time we spend on other aspects of our lives.

We must strive to find work that challenges our intellect and our abilities, is satisfying and fosters professional and personal growth.

Each one of us has to assess how much time we invest in important relationships. How much quality time are you spending with your spouse?

Do you take the time and effort to tell your spouse how much you love him/or her? Are your conversations with them deep and intimate? Do you share your joys and sorrows with them? Do you share your dreams and confess your fears to them? Do you ask them to share with you those things that are important to them, and then take the time to listen?

How much time do you spend with your children and/or grandchildren? When you are together, what do you do with them? Do you spend time talking? Do you actively talk with them about things that are important to you?

Do you talk to them about your past, your accomplishments, your victories and your failures? Have you talked to them about difficult times in your life where you had to persevere and eventually overcame?

Investing your time in deep and meaningful conversations with our loved ones to can lead to extraordinary dividends and returns.

Relationships are deepened and become more intimate, as we share with one another. Trust in one another grows and love flows more freely.

The bonds between husband and wife, parent and child, and grandparent and grandchild become deeper and stronger. Memories are created. The next generation can be spurred on to struggle and endure in the face of their challenges by the accounts of the dedication and perseverance of their parents and grandparents.

The list of potential dividends goes on and on.

God asks each of us to consider how much time we invest in Him. However, before we answer, God wants us to consider how much He has invested in, and continues to invest in, us. God created this world and the rest of the universe for us. The Holy Scriptures tell us that the world and the people He first created were perfect. The first people were duped by the Devil into trading their relationship with God for a share in divinity, (knowing good from evil). Adam and Eve’s investment turned into a disaster. Sin and death came into the world. The sin got so bad that God had to purge the world.

However, God did not give up on His investment, He continued to invest in His creation. God vowed to bring this investment to an end and start all over again in a world with no sin, death or evil.

The Holy Scriptures testify that God invested in the lives of His chosen people from the creation of the world to this very day. The pages of the Old and New Testaments are filled with the accounts of God’s chosen people who faced challenges, struggled and endured by God’s grace, love, mercy and encouragement. Their lives of the dedication to God and perseverance inspire us today. The pages of the New Testament point to the greatest life ever lived: the life, death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the very Son of God who was always with God and through whom we were created. Jesus was born, lived, died and rose again for us and for our salvation.

The resurrected Jesus returned to heaven and promised to return and establish his eternal Kingdom. Jesus’s most passionate desire is to give you eternal life through faith in Him. God wants you to invest some time listening to Him, and His Son, speak through the words of Holy Scripture. If you are afraid that reading and understanding Scripture is too daunting a task, take heart, the Holy Spirit will be your guide.

God wants you to invest some time speaking to Him. All you have to do is bow your head and close your eyes and pray to Him; or worship Him at a church near you.

As we listen to God speak to us through the Holy Scriptures and we speak to Him in prayer, praise and worship, we will reap extraordinary dividends. Our faith and trust in God will grow. We will also learn to look at every other investment of time in our lives in a new and different way. A bond of friendship with Jesus is forged. Jesus said this of his disciples who listened to and followed him: “You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” (John 15:1415). Jesus promises to guide his friends from this life into the life to come.

God’s most passionate desire is for us to invest in some time in Him. You can invest some time with God at a Church near you, and bring your family. At Grace we invest our time with God on Sundays mornings at 9:00AM and 10:30AM. Our children spend time with God at Sunday School which is held during the 10:30AM service.

Hip osteoarthritis is a common condition that involves the degeneration of the articular cartilage of the hip joint.

If you have this condition and are noticing an increase in pain and a decrease in physical function you may be wondering what treatment options are available to you.

With osteoarthritis of the hip you may feel a constant ache localized to the groin and side of your hip and sometimes extending into the front of your thigh and knee.

The hip often feels stiff, especially first thing in the morning when you get out of bed and it can make activities of daily living much more painful including standing, walking and stairs.

It can also make it difficult to put your socks on, get into and out of your car and even get on and off of the toilet.

Stiffness, pain and having difficulty with many previously easy daily activities may lead you to want to do less physical activity.

The trouble is, not moving will often lead to weakness, further stiffness and general deconditioning.

A physiotherapist can help design a treatment program with a focus on decreasing pain, increasing range of motion and flexibility, improving core stability, gaining muscle strength and endurance and improving general conditioning.

Other functional goals often include improving

More than 19 million people in the U.S. suffer from depression annually and during stressful times, this disease can intensify.

Many factors can lead to depression including unrealistic goals added financial stress family expectations, and change of schedule or eating patterns.

But the cure may not be as difficult as you might think; actually, just a few basic lifestyle changes can help you break free of the trap of depression.

Dr. Neil Nedley has put together an eight-week Depression Recovery Program from his 15 years of research and clinical experience helping his patients.

Nadine Munson, the director for the local Depression Recovery Program, will host Dr. Nedley’s program presentation on DVD, beginning Jan. 27, 6:30 p.m. I Nedley says his program will help you identify the underlying causes, or “hits” which bring on depression.

And determining your causes can be as simple as taking the depression questionnaire in this program,” he said.

Nedley, author of the books “Proof Positive” and “Depression: the Way Out,’” said his program can teach participants how to improve brain function, maximize IQ in children, increase energy, boost concentration, engage in healthy sleep habits, improve physical performance, and gain renewed hope. In addition to the essential information on lifestyle and diet, Nedley also covers the benefits and risks of psychiatric counselling and drug medications.

Dr. Larry Shipowick, Kelowna’s Complete Health Improvement Program director (CHIP), says this seminar is not only excellent for people who are depressed, but also for those who have family members or friends who are depressed.

He says it will focus on brain health and what a person can do to treat depression as well as the healthy lifestyle habits they can adopt to keep depression from ever happening; even for those with a genetic predisposition to mental illness.

One of last year’s participants, Elizabeth, attended having recently lost her husband and with arthritic pain that she could no longer take medication for.

She said that the course not only taught her how to cope with her physical pain but also helped her cope with the emotional pain of her recent loss.

“It was one of the best classes I ever took—time very well spent. Not only did it help me cope, but it gave me a better understanding of how pain works—what the body goes through and how I could help it.”

Munson said that those attending the sessions will learn how to establish and maintain a strong exercise program, understand depression, eliminate negative habits of body and mind, develop healthy eating patterns, and get more out of the day by enhancing brain function.

Participants will spend less time frustrated by stress, decrease the risk for many diseases, say goodbye to negative thinking, and understand the true power of positive thinking.

With no real alignment to anything except a man created measurement of time called a calendar,

many of us anticipate a sudden change in fortune to take place.

In addition, we anticipate that this great change will take place for each and all of us, on the same day, because, well,

umm...oh yeah—its New Year’s.

Don’t get me wrong for I look forward to celebrating New Year’s the same as most folks.

In fact, I can’t actually remember one New Year

that I did not welcome happily, though some quite clearly more than others. Such is life in the food chain.

Celebrated fully by so many the Christmas season truly is a grand

way to wind down a year.

It is also a great warmup act to our ‘official’ closing calendar moment —the ‘Start Over’ button called New Year’s.

Madison Bowey and Josh Morrissey did their part in helping boost Canada back to world junior hockey supremacy.

Now the dynamic, defensive duo will anchor the Kelowna blue line as the Rockets make a push for the 2014-15 Western Hockey League title.

Morrissey, acquired last month from the Prince Albert Raiders, was named to the world junior tournament’s allstar team.

Bowey, the Rockets’ captain, played in all situations for Canada and gained plenty of big game experience in the process.

With two of major junior hockey’s elite players at his disposal, Rockets head coach Dan Lambert said the WHL club’s blue line should be in good hands.

“We had a good record while Madison was away, but to be able to insert both of those guys into our lineup will be huge for us,” said Lambert.

“Just to play through the pressure and experiences on such a big stage, that will benefit both of those guys. Those experiences are valuable and they’re going to be valuable to our team.”

Although Bowey has already been the Rockets’ captain for 1 1/2 seasons, Lambert said the world junior experience can only

enhance the Winnipeg native’s leadership abilities.

“I think Madison has grown and matured in a lot of ways since he became our captain,” said Lambert.

“To be put in the situations he was and to come through the way he did, he’s going to mature even more. That’s huge for us.”

If all goes as planned, Bowey and Morrissey will be in the Rockets lineup on Saturday night when the Medicine Hat Tigers pay a visit to Prospera Place.

Meanwhile, Lambert will have another elite player to insert into the lineup on Wednesday night when Leon Draisaitl makes his Rockets debut against the Vancouver Giants.

Warrior picks school West Kelowna Warriors’ forward Jonathan Desbiens has committed to Bentley University in Waltham, Mass. for the 2016-2017 hockey season.

Desbiens, who is in his first year with the Warriors, has 31 points in 32 games, including 17 goals.

The native of Montreal spent last season with the Lincoln Stars of the USHL, compiling six goals and 10 points in 48 games.

Brent Gough says an extra year of BCHL experience should benefit Desbiens in his step up to university hockey.

“Jonathan has been effective for us this season and has really upped his offensive production,” said Gough. “To have him back next season to develop and grow into a college player is going to really help this hockey team on the offensive side of the puck.”

When Desbiens heads to Bentley, there could be at least two BCHL alumni still with the team, as former Nanaimo Clipper Jayson Argue is a freshman goaltender there, and West Kelowna alumni Max French is in his sophomore season.

Head coach Tom Watters knows his team will be “in tough” at the 36th edition Kelowna International Elite Midget Hockey Tournament.

On the upside, the overall quality of teams and level of play at this year’s tourney should only benefit his Kelowna Fripp Warehouse Rockets in the long run.

Included in Kelowna’s pool are the Yale Lions (U18), the top-ranked prep team in Canada, Okanagan Academy Red, which has lost only twice in the Canadian Sport School League, and the Lethbridge Hurricanes, one of the top teams from Alberta’s midget AAA league.

Following tonight’s opening ceremony at Rutland Arena, the host

Rockets will take on Kelowna’s Pursuit of Excellence, the 2013 finalists, at 7 p.m.

“This year for us is a building process all year long,” said Watters, “so if we can prepare ourselves for playoffs and provincials hopefully by playing in this tournament, we’ll take the losses, gain experience and take that with us.”

Among the top teams on the other side of the draw are the defending champion Okanagan Rockets, Okanagan Academy White, Saskatoon Contacts and the Kitchener junior Rangers.

The Okanagan Rockets will open the tournament 4:30 p.m. today at Rutland against South Delta Academy.

With the turnover

of all but one player from last year’s BCMML championship team, the Rockets are a young squad that relies on work ethic and structure to be successful.

“We’re just a hardworking team where everyone is working together, we look to create offense out of puck possession in the other team’s zone, and we like to get on the body,” said Rockets coach Simon Ferguson. “Just a hardworking team…”

Tournament games will be played at Memorial and Rutland Arenas, with the final set for Rutland at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 11.

Local players selected for high performance program For the first time ever, TOFC (Thompson Okanagan Football Club) has had 20 players accepted into the B.C. Soccer’s High Performance programming.

In previous intakes, the program has had a handful of Thompson Okanagan representation with the previous highest

number of candidates at nine. These players represent the u13-u16 age groups and some will go on to represent B.C. at the provincial level.

“We are very pleased with the number of players attending the program,” said TOFC chairman Brian Dewar.

“This is one of the next steps for these

athletes that are a part of the TOFC program.

We are very proud of these individuals as it is an example of the continued dedication of all of our players to strive to the higher levels.

It is also a very regional representation as each of TOFC’s feeder clubs are represented.”

TOFC’s feeder clubs

include the Kamloops Youth Soccer Association, the Shuswap Youth Soccer Association, the North Okanagan Youth Soccer Association, Kelowna United on behalf of the Central Okanagan Youth Soccer Association and Pinnacles FC in the South Okanagan.

“This is fantastic news that we have doubled

our representation from nine to twenty players in the last year.” said TOFC interim technical director Jason Thompson. ”We strive to put players at the next level and this is a great result.”

The B.C. Soccer High Performance program continues to be based around the EA Sports B.C. Soccer Premier League

with TOFC one of eight teams in the league.

The B.C. Soccer High Performance program works closely with the Canadian national soccer teams programs and the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Mustang Classic tourney set to go this week The 2015 version of the Mustang Classic girls and boys basketball tournaments tips off Thursday at Immaculata Regional High School and the co-host school, Kelowna Christian.

Among the opening games in the girls event are the host Mustangs taking on Clarence Fulton at 4 p.m. at Immaculata, while the OKM Huskies face Vernon Secondary at 7:30 p.m. at KCS. Over on the boys side, the 11-team tourney will feature KSS juniors and Pen High at 9 a.m. at Immaculata. The host Mustangs will play the winner of that game at 2:15 p.m.

Kelowna Christian will play at KCS at 2:15 p.m. Thursday against the winner of Princess Margaret and Mt. Sentinel.

Attention: vegetation management The purpose of the proposed Pest Management Plan (PMP) is to manage problem vegetation on rights-of-way transmission corridors, and their access roads within the FortisBC service area. The FortisBC service area is located in proximity to the communities of Cranbrook, Sparwood, Fernie, Kimberley, Vernon, Salmon Arm, Revelstoke, Kamloops, Merritt, Cache Cr, Clinton, 100 Mile House, Williams Lk, Quesnel, Prince George, Mackenzie, Chetwynd, all of the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland as well as Victoria, Nanaimo and Campbell River on Vancouver Island.

The pest management methods proposed for use include physical (nonchemical) treatment methods (selective slashing, mowing, pruning and burning), a biological control agent (fungus), cultural control methods (planting low growing trees and shrubs and compatible tree species, encouraging agro-forestry, and tree growth regulators/inhibitors when and if registered), and the use of pesticides (herbicides). The common name (and examples of trade names) of the pesticides proposed for use under this plan include: dicamba (Vanquish), glyphosate (Roundup, Roundup Weathermax, Glyphos, Vantage, Vantage Plus), picloram (Tordon), and triclopyr (Garlon 4 or Garlon Ultra). Application methods include: foliar, soil, wick/wipe-on and cut surface, using backpack, wick/wipe-on applicator, squirt bottle, injection tools and handgun (power hose and nozzle).

The proposed duration of the PMP is from May 1, 2015 to April 30, 2020.

Film brings attention to the AIDS crisis in Africa to action.

Six grandmothers from Swaziland, Uganda, Kenya, Zimbabwe and South Africa presented their personal testimonies before four tribunal judges.

Two leaders of the community-based organizations in Swaziland and Uganda shared their expertise about some of the most pressing human rights challenges grandmothers are facing in Africa.

When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced.

“The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small.

I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.”

Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheelin shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.

“ I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.”

Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home.

The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

On December 22, 2014 Evelyn Christine Melnyk of Kelowna, B.C. passed away at the age of 99.

She is survived by nieces and nephews as well as many friends. She was predeceased by her husband William in 1998.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 12, 2015 at 11:00am., at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 247 Franklyn Road, Kelowna B.C. The family expresses their appreciation to the staff of Kelowna General Hospital and Springfield Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mountain View Kelowna Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Passed away at Sunpointe Village on December 30, 2014. Henry was born in Kelowna on September 29, 1935 and lived in Rutland all his life. Survived by his loving wife Louise of 57 years, children Bill (Sandy), Mike (Yvonne), Jim (Daune), Tammy (Don) and Darrin (Dolores), 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Siblings Mary (Wally), Betty (John), Allan, Linda (Wayne). A memorial service will be held at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Kelowna on Friday January 9th at 2014 @ 1:00 pm. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of F A Barrie Bennett, in his 89th year. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Merle, son Dale (Brigitte), grandson Andrew and daughter Debra. Barrie was predeceased by his sons Douglas and Daryl as well as siblings Ramon, Barbara, and Alan. Barrie will be remembered for his great love of family, his gentleness, and his dry humor.

PALKEN, SIDNEY Sid entered into eternal rest on Jan 2nd, 2015 after a long and courageous 10 year battle after his stroke. Even then, he still lived, his life to the fullest. LORETTA ELIZABETH MITCHELL (NEE CONWAY) It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother Loretta Mitchell of West Kelowna on Dec. 23rd, 2014 at the age of 78. She was born on Dec. 24, 1935 to the late Stephen and Lucie Conway in Rouyn-Noranda, Que. Loretta grew up in Noranda where she married Val Mitchell Sr. and raised her family there. They moved to Kamloops in 1977, spent time in Tumbler Ridge, and finally settled in West Kelowna in 1988. Mom had a deep and abiding faith and a love of music. Her wealth of knowledge in healthy living was a resource for all of us, and she cherished her time spent with family. Predeceased by her husband Val Mitchell Sr., parents Stephen and Lucie, in-laws Glenn and Mildred Mitchell, and brother Richard. She will be sadly missed by her sons Robert (Julie) of Thunder Bay, Val Jr. (Pam) of Calgary, and Wayne, also of Calgary; daughters Lori Ann (Kevin) Orton, Lisa (David) Fiset of Kamloops and her nine grandchildren; Melissa (Clefton), Glenn, Michael, Carley, Casey, Hayden, Hailey, Alexa, and Cassidy; great grandchildren Grayson and Hayven; sister-in-law Larene (Bob), niece Shanna (Cory). Also survived by her siblings Don (Pat), Robert (Eileen), Joan, Bernice (Barry), Beth, and many nieces and nephews, special cousins and friends from across the country. Thank you to Dr. Imrie of Kelowna for your care and assistance in helping us get Mom to Kamloops. BLACK, DOUGLAS EDGAR ANDERSON

May 27, 1935 - December 22, 2014 Doug has spent his whole life working towards this moment.

Born in Saskatchewan in 1935 he studied geology at University of Saskatchewan and then dentistry at McGill University, graduating in 1963.

Predeceased by his wife of 28 years, Terry. He leaves behind sons Gordon (Sarah) and Ian, and stepchildren, Grant and Sharlene; grandchildren Cameron and Darcy; Cason, Harris and Hadley; Joel and Dallace; Andrew and Oliver. He leaves numerous cousins, and especially his dear cousin, Sylvia Szarko (Chester). Doug married Margaret Clark, and moved to Kelowna in 1964, after briefly practicing dentistry in Vancouver.

He practiced for over 40 years, nine of which were with his son, Gordon. Doug’s contributions to the profession are significant. He loved the practice of restorative dentistry and crown and bridge. He was recognized by his peers as an exceptionally gifted dentist. He was a member of the K.E.Murchie Restorative Study Club, the Academy of Operative Dentistry, a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, and Fellow of the International College of Dentists.

Doug was a Chief Examiner for the National Dental Examining Board of Canada, President of local and regional dental societies, a member of the Council of the BC Dental Association and chaired numerous committees of the College of Dental Surgeons of BC. Doug was equally happy on a tractor, or riding horseback through the wilderness. Together with Terry, they bred champion racehorses. He had a gift for explaining the Canadian landscape and geography, and in sharing this, he deepened our appreciation of our country. He loved to sail, and was a long time member of the Kelowna Yacht Club.

Doug won many trophies for his racing efforts, and later worked on the race boat with Frank Bechard, Tony Jarrett, & Duncan Innes. He was one of the early pass-holders at Big White and spent many happy hours on the slopes and at his mountain residence, introducing many people to the sport.

Doug enjoyed travelling the world, and was always planning his next great adventure.

Doug was generous and kind. He had an excellent sense of humour, and a cheerful, optimistic outlook. Doug was a loyal friend to many, and quick to help when he saw need. He was tenacious, and enjoyed solving a good problem. He ran with a tight crowd of South East Kelowna friends, especially the Browns, Kellys and Turtons. His dental partner of 35 years, Albie LaBounty was like a brother to him. He will be missed by relatives in England, New Zealand, by friends near and far, and by Lois Clarke, with whom he travelled, sailed and rediscovered joy in his last two years.

Douglas has had his last great adventure, and while we will miss him, we will keep his memory dear. Thank you to Doctors Imrie, O’Bedkoff, Halperin, Baker, McCauley and KGH ER doctors and nurses, and staff at Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the KGH Foundation.

Arrangements have been made by Springfield Funeral Home. A private service has been held. Celebration of life will be held on Friday, January 9, 2015 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at the Kelowna Yacht Club.

MARION “ MORAG” KEIR Born March 4, 1928 in Rothesay, Bute, Scotland. Morag passed peacefully away on Jan 1, 2015 with her daughter Ann, at her side, at the Spring Valley Care Home in Kelowna BC. Morag came to Canada as an adventurous young woman when she was 26. She sailed across the Atlantic to New York and made her way to Canada -where she met Frank in Lake Louise, Alberta and married. She spent her life in Canada, becoming an official Canadian citizen in 1975. There were many trips home to Scotland, Canada however was her home. In her later years she enjoyed being a “snowbird” for Canadian winters. She was well loved by family and friends and she truly loved people. Predeceased by husband Frank.

Remembered always by daughter Ann (Dennis), her sister Helen in England and many nieces and nephews in Scotland and England. Many thanks to the staff of Spring Valley Pioneer Ward for their care of Morag over the years.

HENDERSON, DR. HAROLD RAYMOND

July 11, 1920 – December 30, 2014 Dad passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at the age of 94 with family at his side. He was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Maybel on May 28, 2013 as well as his brother Leigh and sister Evelyn Burnett.

Survived by daughter Maureen (Mel) Serink and their three children: Jen (Rich Martin) and their daughters Sophia and Emily; Julia (Jeff Mah) and their daughter Ava; Andrea; son Bruce (Peg) Henderson and their four children: Jacci (Graeme) Herring and sons Alex and Matthew; Melissa (Jarrod) Oliver and twin daughters Sydney and Peyton; Christine (Alan Stremel); James; his sister Kay McLeod; as well as many nieces, nephews and his many friends at Sandalwood.

Dad was born in Calgary and came to Kelowna in 1934 with his family. At the age of 19, he taught school in South Kelowna. After serving in the war, Dad obtained his Dental Degree in Toronto and then returned to Kelowna in 1950, where he practiced Dentistry for many years. Dad enjoyed fishing and had many eventful and sometimes successful fishing trips with friends over the years. He also enjoyed curling as well as golfing at the Kelowna Golf and Country Club. Dad was a lifetime member of the Rotary Club of Kelowna; President in 1955, District Governor 1967-1968, Director of Rotary International 1976-1978 and Third Vice-President of Rotary International in 1977-1978. Dad continued to serve Rotary in many capacities for the next twelve years or so. In 1977 Harold was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal. In 1986 he received the Key to the City of Kelowna and in 1997 was named the Male Citizen of the Year for Kelowna. Dad was also involved with the Boy Scouts, First United Church, Kelowna Advisory Planning Committee and many other organizations. Even with all the above, Dad spent a lot of time with his family enjoying yearly family vacations, summer time at Green Bay and lots of fun boating on the lake. Harold was a very intelligent, kind and gentle man who will be truly missed by all who knew him. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 10th at 1:00 pm at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC with Rev. Karen Medland officiating. HEATHER DORIS TURNER of Kelowna, March 6, 1965 passed away Dec 12, 2014 in 150 Mile House, BC, her home for the past 15 years. Heather was a dedicated nurses aide in Denny House, Williams Lake. She loved music, wrote poetry, had a sharp sense of humour and an infections smile.

Survived By her 3 children; Jason Boogard (35), Holly (22) and Brad (19) Buchner, 6 month old grand-daughter Ava Buchner, twin sister Helen of Surrey, Lonnie Dehn of Abbotsford, Kathleen Turner and Dan Turner of Kelowna, Bruce Bain of Calgary, and her parents June and Ken Turner of Kelowna. Heather’s many friends, co-workers, and family will remember and deeply miss the love she always radiated. She was honoured at a service in the Salvation Army Church in Williams Lake on Dec 21, 2014.

FORD, CAMERON DUFF (CAM)

July 27, 1966 – December 30, 2014 Painlessly and in his sleep, Cam has moved on to brighter days filled with 4x4s, bonfires, and maybe an adult beverage or two. In the words of J.M. Barrie, “Next moment he was standing erect on the rock again, with that smile on his face and a drum beating within him. It was saying, “To die will be an awfully big adventure.” Born and raised in Kelowna, Cam came to the end of his journey amid family in Coldstream, BC. He rejoins his Mom Karen, Sister Mavis, Fiancé Ronnie, great friends Jack and Conrad and best pup Java. Cam is survived by his sons Dustin and Orion Betts, dad David, sister Heather, best friends Linda, Shane and Juliette, only nephew Corey, as well as a number of aunts, uncles, cousins and long-time friends Derek and Billy. Cam had his fair share of rough times, but had been looking forward to some new opportunities, and a chance at real happiness up north.

A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Cam’s life will be held at 2:00pm, Thursday January 8th, at First Memorial Funeral, 1211 Sutherland Avenue.

ADMINISTRATOR The Black Mountain Irrigation District (BMID) is an improvement district operating within the boundaries of the City of Kelowna and the Regional District of Central Okanagan. BMID is an autonomous local government body responsible for the provision of water for the benefit of residents and agricultural users within the community. BMID is the largest improvement district in the Province. As of January 1, 2014 we have a service population of approximately 22,550. This is the Chief Executive Position for the District, serving as the primary advisor to the 5 member Board of Trustees and providing strategic leadership to ensure the District is operated in a responsible and sustainable manner. Economy ACCELERATE OKANAGAN

Accelerate Okanagan has launched a new access to capital training program, called Fast Track.

The program has received a $60,000 commitment from investors, subject to a successful due diligence review.

The Fast Track program is available to local Okanagan tech companies while businesses from outside the region are eligible to participate remotely.

“One of the toughest parts of raising investment is finding a lead investor to complete the due diligence review,” said Andrew Greer, program manager at Accelerate Okanagan.

“Fast Track overcomes that barrier.

Not only will the program provide training to increase the chance of raising investment, it also creates an opportunity to partner with lead investors who can attract other follow-on investment. This is a great opportunity for companies looking for investment capital.”

In a national survey of 150 of Canada’s emerging tech companies, CEOs identified funding and capital raising as their top challenge.

Accelerate Okanagan is working with

the community to tackle this problem locally.

Targeting technology-based companies who are past the idea stage and have demonstrated traction, Fast Track focuses on pitch practice and due diligence preparation for companies who are ready or nearly ready for investment.

This program is open to all types of technology companies—including, but not limited to, information and communications tech, clean and green tech, agricultural tech, life science tech, and advanced manufacturing.

Participants will each receive pitch training, due diligence training, and a professional review of legal, financial, and valuation components for their due diligence.

Participating companies will have access to an Executive in Residence (EIR), who will coach each participant for the duration of the program.

There is a $150 fee for applicants who are selected into the program.

New capital training program fast tracked for hi-tech industry

Thanks to generous donors a new classroom program has been made possible for the first time in the Okanagan providing HOPE for our community and the future growth and development of local children. YMCA Beyond the Bell has been implemented at George Pringle Elementary School in West Kelowna, after principal John McMahon sought out the Y’s support last spring. “We were looking for a program that could help some of the kids most struggling in our school, and were grateful to hear of Beyond the Bell’s success,” explained McMahon. This program was first developed in Ontario where, after one year, the majority of children had shown reading improvement by at least one grade level and an overwhelming number of parents reported that their children understood their school lessons better and their confidence had improved. YMCA staff leaders and trained volunteers provide support much like a parent would, helping each of them build social skills, experience new opportunities and gain better self-confidence, with a ratio of 1:5 leaders to children. The Y has committed to Beyond the Bell locally for three years with 40 children enrolled for the 2014/15 school year.

EVENING OF APPRECIATION

Banquet to honour Gray, Blanleil, Hobson An evening of appreciation is being organized to recognize the long time service to the city by three retired civic politicians.

Former mayor Walter Gray and city councillors Andre Blanleil and Robert Hobson will be recognized at a banquet planned for April 25 at the Delta Grand Hotel.

Each of the three have spent than 20 years serving the City of Kelowna, so a committee of appreciative citizens has come together to coordinate the celebration dinner event in their honour.

dinner, video montage looking back over more than 20 years of the city’s history and the trio’s contribution to it, and the opportunity to share stories with Kelowna colleagues and peers.

The MC for the evening will be Robert Fine, with some of the guest speakers lined up including former Kelowna fire chief and city councillor Gerry Zimmermann, city manager Ron Mattiussi and comedian Herb Dixon.

Organizing committee chair David Rush said, “Serving Kelowna through work on council is a huge commitment and contribution. Walter, Andre and Robert have given so greatly to our community, and we hope that this celebration evening will help to show them how much their

many years of work have been appreciated.”

All inclusive tickets are $100. Tables of 8 can be purchased for $800.

OC dean elected vice-president for CGA-BC board The dean of the Okanagan School of Business at Okanagan College has been elected 1st vice-chair of the Certified General Accountants Association of B.C. Board or Governors.

In addition to her activities with the CGA-BC Board, Heather Banham will sit on the Chartered Professional Accountants of BC’s (CPABC) transitional steering committee.

Banham received her CGA designation in 1992.

As an active member of the profession, Banham is involved in various committees, including the discipline, education appeals, and education advisory committees.

Banham was honoured with a fellowship designation in 2014.

An entrepreneur’s vision is their guiding focus In today’s world, people are the critical resource for most business ventures.

So entrepreneurs ask themselves: “How do I most effectively bring together the team I need to pursue my venture?

“And once I have my team in place, how do I lead them toward the successful outcomes?”

In other words, how do you provide an environment where creativity and innovation flourish (the two capstones of the

Conditions within any entrepreneurial entity do allow effective entrepreneurial leadership to thrive and encourage unity of purpose.

Let’s move over into the concept of “art.” The good news for wouldbe entrepreneurs is that creativity and innovation sit at the heart of many ventures— and these two ingredients are imperative toward successful outcomes.

But how do you and I take good ideas, turn them into new products and services and bring them to market confidently? How do you go from being a small business to being an entrepreneurial powerhouse?

Alright team, start with strategy. At the risk of sounding textbookish, the starting point is your strategy and objectives.

If you don’t at the outset define a clear picture of your venture’s intended future and key objectives to get you there, you’ll find it near impossible to lead your new venture toward being successful.

Your strategy can be looked at in five steps: • create a picture of the future, your vision and ambition • be clear about where you are starting from, i.e. your current business capabilities and the competitive environment you wish to enter with your new venture idea • use this backdrop to list your objectives • filter these objectives from an operational and financial perspective towards meeting your vision and personal ambition meter • prioritize them and turn the information into a practical worksheet for your implementation

On a personal level, please be clear with yourself about why you wish to become entrepreneurial and develop your venture.

Apart from the obvious of financial rewards, most successful entrepreneurial leaders have deep-rooted reasons for taking the journey, and stay in tune with those feelings.

Even the most laidback entrepreneurs in our beloved Okanagan rely on their vision of the future to stay motivated and cope with tough times that inevitably arise.

I want to sidestep for a moment and talk about striving to build “sustainable advantage” with your new venture.

That advantage is essential to value creation because cash flows become predictable and reliable over long periods of time.

Building sustainable advantage requires proficiency in the disciplines of entrepreneurship, leadership and certainly, management.

I believe

entrepreneurship is both an art and a science.

Art is an occupation that requires both knowledge and skills; science is a method for systematizing knowledge.

Entrepreneurship is a competency for starting, developing and assuming risk for an enterprise.

Leadership is a competency for aspiring, inspiring and motivating others. Management is then, a competency for directing and controlling events and activities.

You can see that all three of these competencies are crucial for the complete entrepreneur image.

In conclusion, let me offer you this final thought. There are many definitions of being entrepreneurial, but I like to think of it as an undertaking an enterprise while accepting the risks and responsibility for the outcome that may unfold.
