When his hungry son started fussing, new dad Guriqbal Khehra smiled and said “OK, boss,” and handed him to mom, Mandeep Sekhon.

“He is a precious gift from God,” she said, as her child snuggled close on the hospital bed.

The seven pound, 13-ounce boy was born at Langley Memorial Hospital on Jan. 2.

By arriving before his scheduled Jan. 7 due date, he became the first child of the New Year born in Langley.

He is also the first child for the young couple, Cloverdale residents who both work as professional drivers, and the first grandchild on the father’s side of the family.

His father and mother planned to select a name for their first child on Monday, but he already had a couple of nicknames as of Sunday.

“Boss” is one, a name his father stressed was “only for one day” and the other, that will probably stick, is “lucky.”

“This is lucky for us,” his dad said.

Man airlifted to hospital after three-car collision Saturday Alcohol is believed to be a factor in a three-car collision on 264 Street which saw one driver airlifted to hospital on Saturday, Jan. 3.

Shortly after 1 p.m., police were called to the intersection of 264 Street and 24 Avenue to investigate a collision involving a Honda, an Acura and a Volkswagen.

Witnesses said the Volkswagen was making a left hand turn onto 264 from 24 Avenue when it was hit from behind by the Honda. The Honda then spun and collided with the Acura.

All three vehicles had the drivers as the sole occupants.

The driver of the Honda, a 27-year-old Abbots-

ford resident, was unconscious at the scene and was airlifted to hospital.

The driver of the Volkswagen (a 33-year-old man from Pitt Meadows) was looked over at the scene

by BC Ambulance while the driver of the Acura, a 26-year-old Langley man, was taken to hospital for treatment only as a precaution.

Police believe the Honda driver may have been impaired by alcohol and will follow up with a warrant for blood samples to further the investigation.

If anyone witnessed the collision and has not spoken to police, they are asked to call Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200.

Christmas may be in some people’s rearview mirror now, but for the Stewart family, the spirit of the season is still playing a happy tune in their household.

That’s because of the kindness of a stranger who overheard them talk about their financial struggles and anonymously donated $500 towards buying their daughter a new saxophone for Christmas.

“Before Christmas, my husband and I were at Long and McQuade here in Langley asking if we could pay for a new saxophone for our daughter over two years instead of over a year,” said Debbie Stewart.

“My husband hasn’t worked since 2011 because he hurt himself on the job and so it’s been a struggle,” she said.

“The man heard us and said he once struggled financially too but music is so important.

“He anonymously put $500 into our account to pay down her saxophone. We wanted to reach out to him and say how much of a difference he made in our lives,” she said.

Their daughter did get her professional-grade saxophone on Christmas Day. “She was over the moon. She never expected to get it,” said Debbie.

Marina, a Langley Times newspaper carrier, is in Grade 8 at Langley Fine Arts School, where she in the music program.

She plays flute and saxophone and music is her passion, said mom.

“She comes by it naturally. I never have to ask her to play, she always wants to,” Debbie said.

A new saxophone costs around $3,000, so with $600 the Stewarts got for a trade-in and the $500 from a stranger, they are well on their way to paying it off.

“We just really appreciate his kindness,” she said.

Kelly Isbister sentenced to four years for molestation MO N I Q U E TA M M I N G A Ti m e s Re po r t e r

A Provincial Court judge called Kelly Isbister’s acts of child molestation “predatory and relentless,” and sentenced him to four years in jail.

Isbister will serve three years, as he has already spent one year in jail.

In his sentencing hearing on Dec. 18 in Surrey Provincial Court, Isbister appeared unhappy with the decision.

In October, the 42-year-old lifelong Langley resident pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual interference of a person under 16.

All three of Isbister’s victims were 14 at the time of the crimes, which took place between 2010 to 2013.

“These 14-year-old boys were befriended

by Mr. Isbister, and all these events took place at his house. He provided them with drugs and alcohol and drew them in for his own sexual gratification,” said Judge Michael Hicks in his sentencing.

He victimized one boy for one year and another for three months.

Court heard that Isbister has never had meaningful employment in his life, but did manage to obtain a license to grow medicinal marijuana at the time of the crimes against the teens. At the time, he was giving the victims pot and alcohol along with cash.

He engaged in anal sex with two of his victims, and he photographed all three in sexual poses.

“Mr. Isbister took advantage of them while they were intoxicated and manipulated them for his own sexual satisfaction,” said the judge.

The victims are all traumatized and found it difficult to revisit these events in their past.

“They chose not to write victim impact statements for that very reason, because of their acute anxiety around these events.

Police have issued an arrest warrant for one of Langley’s most prolific offenders, Robin Allan Hibbs.

Hibbs, 49, is wanted in relation to an alleged Dec. 2 theft of a vehicle and mischief that occurred in Brookswood.

Last January, police put out an

arrest warrant for Hibbs after he breached his jail release conditions after serving time for robbing the Langley Ricky’s restaurant in 2013. He was arrested in February.

In 2012, Hibbs spent eight months in jail after pleading guilty for wire theft in Langley.

Hibbs is described as Caucasian,

49 years old, 6 feet tall, 161 lbs., with brown hair, blue eyes and a scar on his forehead.

In another case, Langley RCMP are on the hunt for 22-year-old Bright Moon after issuing an arrest warrant.

The 5’5”, 130-pound Langley man is al-

leged to have assaulted a 62-year-old woman on July 13. Police were told Moon knocked at the victim’s door, and when it opened, he rushed inside. Moon ran directly toward the victim, who was seated in the living room, and attempted to strike her in the head with his fist. His first punch was blocked, however his second attempt hit the victim in her chest, causing her to fall to the ground.

Langley RCMP are on the lookout for the Christmas Day thief.

On Dec. 25, a man was captured on video surveillance as he broke into mailboxes in an apartment building in the 19700 block of 56 Avenue. Mail theft is still an ongoing problem in Langley.

Police have also released surveillance footage of two suspects accused of some post-Christmas crime.

The pictured male (foreground) and female are believed to have broken into mailboxes in apartment buildings in the 20800 block of 83 Avenue and the 8200 block of 207A Street on Dec. 27.

Decision ‘significant’ for Metro municipalities, says Froese From Page 1

“But it isn’t as grand as some people have been making it out that it puts the whole regional growth strategy in question.”

He said the region had been most concerned about the language used by the lower court judge suggesting the regional district has no authority to interfere in local development decisions.

The appeal court’s more narrow ruling appears to have ignored those comments and left the regional district with teeth to enforce growth limits, he said, although there may need to be more explicit wording in regional context statements that cities pass to indicate how they will conform to Metro rules.

Langley Township had not yet adopted its new regional context statement when its council approved the development, so it was governed by Metro’s old 1998 Livable Region Strategic Plan, not the new regional growth strategy adopted in 2011.

Moore said he expects Langley Township will now pass its context statement and comply with the new growth strategy moving forward.

Langley Township Mayor Jack Froese said Moore is wrong to downplay the decision.

“I think this is significant moving forward on how regional districts relate to the

member municipalities,” Froese said. “This case will resonate very strongly with the members. The right of locally elected governments to control land use planning is paramount.”

He said Metro is now admitting what the Township has long insisted — it was operating under the old growth strategy.

“They’ve changed their tune because we were right,” Froese said. “This is a nice Christmas present for me.”

Metro has also been at odds with Port Moody over that city’s plan to convert industrial land into higher density mixed uses.

Moore said the region and Port Moody have agreed to try to reach an out-of-court resolution by the end of March on what changes to the local Official Community Plan are acceptable.

Metro Vancouver had sought financial aid from the Union of B.C. Municipalities to fight the appeal against Langley Township, but was rejected on the basis UBCM could not support one of its members in court against another.

Langley Secondary School may be entering its final six months of operation, given that the Board of Education has already started the ball rolling to close the school.

Trustees emphasized at their December meeting that the school may not close — but if it is to close at the end of June, they had no choice but to start the formal and lengthy process in December.

There are many factors leading to the possible closure.

The school is Langley’s oldest high school, its enrolment is declining and it is in need of major seismic upgrades.

In addition, the school district has to come up with significant funds to build a new high school in Willoughby.

Closing a school on a prime piece of property which could be sold would go quite a way to amassing capital for that project.

However, a closure of the school would cause significant disruptions for students. H.D. Stafford, which had been a secondary school and was converted to a middle school as part of a gradual introduction of middle schools in Langley, would revert to a secondary. This would come despite a number of renovations to Stafford to make it appropriate as a middle school.

While it may not be too difficult to turn it back into a senior secondary, facilities such as shops are minimal. LSS has a very good industrial education program and a number of well-equipped shops, and it would be a shame if those facilities are lost to high school students, given the importance of apprenticeship and technical education.

LSS is also adjacent to the very well-equipped McLeod Athletic Park and has been able to use park facilities to enhance some of its programs. This too would be lost to students, should the school close.

Perhaps the biggest challenge may come for students who will be in middle school in September. Simonds Elementary has been proposed as the new middle school, should Stafford take over for LSS. While it is a good-sized school, it is not set up to be a middle school at this point in time.

There would need to be some significant changes there for it to be ready to welcome middle school students in September.

Parents and students will have an opportunity for input into these possible changes at an open house set for Jan. 14. All those with an interest in this issue should make a point of attending.

A new beginning they

The changing of the calendar on the wall brings the promise of a new beginning.

Of course the baggage of the previous 12 months is carried over into January but there’s still the feeling of a fresh start, even if it’s largely in our own minds.

And it’s important to kid ourselves a little as the feelgood atmosphere of the holiday season fades.

Procrastination and just sheer laziness are tempting as we head out on our way into the unknown that is 2015 but it’s important to take advantage of the opportunity that a blank page represents in our lives.

We may be 25, 45 or 65 but a new year, heck even a new day, always provides the opportunity to make positive changes in our lives that benefit not only us but our families, friends and communities as well.

Hopefully we soaked up enough goodwill over the holidays that it carries far into the new year and we become a little bit closer to that person we want to be or at least feel we should be attempting to be.

Of course there will be bumps along the road to our goals, but as they say it’s not so much what happens to us in life as how we respond to the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or something to that effect.

Resolutions are good but often ineffective. It’s likely you’ve broken a few already. Making realistic and manageable changes in our daily lives towards long-term goals, that may or may not include resolutions, is likely a better way to achieve a happier and more satisfying 2015 for the majority of us.

MSP an unfair tax and hits poor hard Editor: A special Happy New Year to all who are personally subjected to the perpetual MSP premium increases.

As the provincial Liberal government imposes another annual increase to Medical Service Plan (MSP) premiums, it is again time to remind British Columbia residents that this is probably the most regressive tax in Canada.

A family of two with a “MSP adjusted net income” of $31,000 will pay $1,560 annually, or about five per cent of their income for MSP premiums. With a net income of $50,000, these premiums will be approximately three per cent, and at $80,000 they will be somewhere around two per cent.

This tax destined for general revenue belies the government’s statement that “British Columbia has the lowest provincial income tax rate.”

B.C. residents most affected by this regressive taxation, through provincial and other levels of taxation and fees, also contribute to the MSP premiums of approximately 400,000 public sector employees from all levels of government, institutions and agencies, including MLAs, ministers and the premier.

MSP premiums are an unfair tax, inefficiently collected for general revenue by a managing bureaucracy. Considering all the public sector employees and union members who benefit from this process, don’t expect any change, as no politician of any stripe will address this issue. The most one can hope for is the annual increases and rhetoric about the lowest income tax rate will cease.

Delivered by Langley Meals on Wheels home delivery program co-ordinator Sharon Reeder and her family, clients of both programs were able to receive a meal on Christmas Day. Many, if not all of these clients were unable to celebrate the holidays with their families, due to a variety of reasons, and would have gone without.

For many, having a friendly face and a hot meal delivered to their door was an wonderful and very appreciated Christmas gift.

Hunters in B.C. are growing in number and are often seeking out animals like this bull moose. They are upset about a provincial plan to give more licences to guide-outfitters.

Hunters up in arms over changes Editor: Hunters are up in arms. Our Clark government is disregarding the needs of B.C. resident hunters. The last few years have seen a 10 per cent increase in resident hunter numbers and a 30 per cent decline in foreign trophy hunters. Yet for 2015, the Clark government has announced a policy to reduce residents’ share of the allowable annual harvest and award the reductions to commercial guide-outfitters’ foreign clients.

I began hunting in 1944 with my parents and grandparents. All like me, who follow in the ages-old hunter-gatherer tradition of sustenance harvesting from the wild, support

public access to wildlife resources along with sustainability of wildlife populations. To accomplish this, we need to recruit young, ethical hunter-gatherers who support us.

The Clark government created special youth licences and special hunting seasons which have proven successful.

However, reductions in allocations will negatively impact all residents, including our youth. The Clark goverment’s wrong-headed policy of taking from residents and giving to an industry in decline must be turned around.

We live here, we love the outdoors Editor: B.C. resident hunters are now well aware of the government’s decision to reallocate the number of authorizations we receive. As an avid hunter, this is of great concern to me, my fellow hunters and the future hunters from hunting families across B.C. The decision to decrease the number of authorizations allotted to resident hunters is not only a poor decision, but it clearly shows the government has little interest in preserving the rights of the majority of hunters.

Our family depends on hunting to help sustain healthier eating habits throughout the year. Decreasing the opportunity for resident hunters to harvest big game species so that more foreigners can take advantage of harvesting B.C. big game is absurd. Many of us live in this province because we love the outdoors. Fishing, hunting and camping is what we do.

Now let’s take this one step further. If this happens to be

about the mighty dollar, I can assure you people in Victoria that Lower Mainlanders are not running up the Coquihalla every other weekend in our F350 crew cabs. We are filling up our gas-guzzling, diesel smoking, camper packing, trailer towing pickups on the coast and then usually topping them up in Cache Creek or Merritt, dumping a heck of a lot more money in the system than “one man and his wife guiding” out of small town B.C. I’m sure I am speaking for hunters across B.C. when I say that what the government has decided to implement as far as larger numbers allotted for non-resident hunters has put a horrible taste in all our mouths. If the people running this province in Victoria think we are going to let off the gas on this issue, they are clearly looking through blurred sights.

Pioneer mechanic Walt Barron dies at age 87 Well-known Langley City mechanic and garage owner Walt Barron passed away on Dec. 27, at the age of 87.

In addition to his work, he was active in the community, particularly with the Elks Lodge. He served as president of the Elks Clubs of B.C. in 1979.

Mr. Barron was born in Lacombe, Alberta in 1927 and moved with his family to Langley at the age of 10. By 1943, he was working with his father William Bar-

ron at a garage in what is now downtown Langley City, next to the Langley Hotel.

The service station was originally opened

by Walt’s father in 1938 as a Signal Oil station.

When Standard Oil of B.C., now Chevron Canada, took over Signal, it became a Chevron station and remained one until the pumps were shut off in early 1997.

At that time, Walt and his brother Del, who later joined him in working at the station, were the longest-oper-

ating Chevron dealers in B.C. Walt and Del bought the business from their father in 1957, and operated it for another 40 years.

In a Times article published in January, 1997, when the pumps were finally closed, Walt recalled selling gas to famous actor Humphrey Bogart, who stopped for gas in 1946. He was on his way to Hope at the time.

The Barrons had many loyal customers and a large num-

ber of them came out to mark the closing of the building in August, 1997.

After closing the pumps in January, 1997, the Barron brothers continued to ser-

vice vehicles until August, when Walt retired and Del moved the shop to a new location.

The building was later torn down, and the site is now a parking lot.

The Barrons were

among the pioneer Langley garage owners honoured at the annual Douglas Day lunch in November.

A memorial servicewill take place on Friday, Jan. 9 at 1 p.m. at

George Preston Recreation Centre, 20699 42 Ave. Mr. Barron is survived by his son Mark and daughter Ramona (Brian). His brother Del also survives him.

Langley’s road warrior DON MCINTYRE, 82, IS DRIVING TO TUKTOYAKTUK NEXT MONTH IN MEMORY OF HIS WIFE, DOROTHY, AND TO RAISE FUNDS FOR THE CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY BRENDA ANDERSON Times Reporter

It’s the end of the road for Don McIntyre.

At least, that’s the plan.

The 82-year-old Langley man is preparing to head out on a northern adventure that will take him all the way to Tuktoyaktuk, NWT, where the highway gives way to the rocky shore of the Arctic Ocean.

McIntyre plans to leave on Feb. 1 for the roughly 8,000-km round-trip journey through B.C., the Yukon and Northwest Territories — one that will take him across some of Canada’s most remote and challenging wilderness.

He expects to encounter plenty of wildlife, as well as dangerous ice and blowing snow on the long — and, no doubt, lonely — stretch of the Dempster Highway. But it’s not just McIntyre’s sense of adventure that is prompting him to make the solo journey in the dead of winter.

The reason he must go soon is that the town of fewer than 1,000 people at the tip of the continent is only accessible by an ice road for a few months each year. In between freeze-ups, the highway ends at Inuvik, and the only way to travel the final 194 kilometres to Tuktoyaktuk is by air.

McIntyre is planning the trip as a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society in memory of his wife, Dorothy, who passed away a year and a half ago. Appropriately, he’s calling his journey On the Road Again for Dorothy.

During their more than 55 years of marriage, the Langley couple put thousands of miles on their vehicles, driving all over the continent when they weren’t flying to more exotic locales, from Panama to Argentina.

The morning after they danced the night away at their 50th anniversary party in 2007, the couple hooked up their trailer and towed it across the country to St. John’s, Nfld., before turning and heading south to Atlantic City.

They spent about 16 weeks on the road during that trip.

Whenever they pulled out of a campsite, they’d play On the Road Again by Willie Nelson.

“We’d roll down the windows so everyone knew we were leaving,” said McIntyre.

“We did everything together,” he said, acknowledging that long-distance driving is a way to both feel closer to his late wife and to keep him from dwelling on her absence.

After Dorothy passed away from cancer in July 2013, McIntyre took to the road by himself, following a winding route from Mesa, Ariz. to Key West, Fla. It was a somewhat lonely trip, he said, but one of the most difficult parts of the journey was navigating his way through large U.S. cities — Corpus Christi, Dallas, Miami, Fort Lauderdale — without Dorothy directing him from the passenger seat.

His next trip will, of course, present a whole different set of challenges.

The farther north he gets, McIntyre expects to encounter increasingly dangerous driving conditions along miles of wilderness offering nothing but trees, blowing snow and the occasional frozen waterway to break the monotony.

McIntyre said his three children have had mixed reactions to his plans.

His daughter is worried, he said. And while one son likes to brag to his friends about his adventurous dad, the “practical” one is doing whatever he can to make sure McIntyre is well prepared.

“The only thing I’m really worried about is getting in trouble and having my children have to come and bail me out,” he said.

ensure it can handle the snow and ice. It will have a block heater, battery blanket, antifreeze rated for exceptionally cold temperatures and good quality snow tires, he said.

The vehicle is white, so he will put a black bra on the front to ensure that he’s visible to other traffic.

Other safety measures he’s considering include bringing a cellphone amplifier and a satellite locator that will send a signal to his daughter’s computer or a panic button that will contact police.

He’ll pack an extra rim, chains, blankets, water and “probably a big box of granola bars.”

He also plans to mount a camera on his dashboard to record his adventure.

“If a moose charges my car, I can send you a picture,” he chuckled.

“I think it’s kind of a neat story,” McIntyre said. “I don’t know anyone my age who would do this. It will be a hard drive.

“I’ve got Forrest Gump syndrome, except he ran for three years and I’m driving,” he quipped.

The retired insurance adjuster expects the trip will cost him about $7,000 out of pocket.

He plans to pay his own way, but is accepting donations on behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society.

His goal is to reach $25,000 through per-kilometre pledges or lump sum donations.

Although he’s happy to help raise money for a good cause, McIntyre has ulterior motives for making the journey.

“I see these old men sitting around in the mall . . . and I can’t do that,” he said.

“You can’t just sit there watching the world go by.”

“People will probably get sick of hearing me talk about my trip, but at least I won’t be telling stories of ‘I remember when.’

“It should be kind of fun,” he said.

“I’m 82. I hope it’s not the last hurrah, but it’s a hurrah near the end.”

Louwerse on Love, Loss & Laughter TWU alumnus and opera singer Chad Louwerse returns to the Langley university on Jan. 11 to perform Songs of Love, Loss and Laughter.

He recently spoke to The Times about his career in music and the struggles he faced in choosing his path.

LT: What drew you into a career in opera? Is it simply that you are one of the rare individuals who have a voice suited to the genre, or was there more to it than that?

CL: The funny thing is that I used to mock the sound of operatic singing. I wasn’t drawn to it at all, though I have always loved classical music — a recording of Bach was the first music I ever bought with my own money. Another irony is that once I started singing in voice lessons, I said that I would never sing opera. Cosmic jokes. Of course, I love it now.

I understand that at one time, you struggled with reconciling a career in the performing arts and having a strong relationship with God? What made you feel that way?

Do you still struggle with that?

I did struggle with reconciling a career singing opera with

my faith. At the time it was really a worry about whether or not the subject matter of opera was acceptable more than anything else.

In retrospect, while it was perhaps an important struggle, I found I was struggling over the wrong issue.

The real issue is that, for me, art is about exploring the truth about what it is to be human and all the good, bad, and ugly that goes along with it. It isn’t always pretty and nice — usually not.

However, God is in the business of love, and of truth, and of overcoming evil with good, and of reconciliation. Those are things that I can get behind and I’ve found that most operas have something in them that goes along with that line of thinking regardless of whether I play a good guy or a bad guy.

Have you studied extensively the languages in which you sing to better understand the text? Is that necessary to convey the emotion of the opera’s story, or do you get that through the music itself?

The answer to all these is yes. I speak French and have studied German and Italian and can get by in those lan-

guages. These, along with English are the first languages of classical music studies.

However, singers will also have to tackle Czech and Russian for opera before too long, not to mention Latin, Spanish…so many lovely languages, so little time.

Opera is, after all, all about telling a story. If you don’t know what you’re singing, you really can’t communicate the story.

The upcoming recital is for TWU’s Faculty and Friends Recital Series. It’s wonderful to be able to be involved with my alma mater this way. I chose the music for this concert with the first-time recital goer in mind. Each set in the concert has a story apart from the actual lyrics. It’s the story that gets me excited and I’ll share them in the concert – and no spoilers here. You’ll have to come to the concert to hear them.

A packed house watched the Vancouver Canucks alumni squad down the Langley Knights 11-5.

Cliff Ronning had three goals, while John Craighead scored twice and set up one other for the alumni squad.

Craighead usually patrols the bench for the junior B Knights, but the former pro player traded his coat and tie for skates and a stick to suit up against his charges.

Denis Pederson had a goal and three helpers for the alumni team while Jyrki Lumme contributed a

goal and two assists. Also suiting up for the team was Langley country singer star Chad Brownlee, who was a sixth round draft pick of the Canucks in 2003.

John Ashbridge, the Vancouver Canucks’ public address announcer, and anthem singer Mark Donnelly were also on hand, while singer Michelle Szulc sang the American anthem.

For the Knights, Levi De Waal scored the team’s first goal. The game was stopped so De Waal could receive an NHL alumni association jersey, as well as getting a pie in the face for his efforts.

The game was played on Sunday at the George

Preston Recreation Centre and served as a fundraiser with proceeds going to Sophie’s Place, a child advocacy centre in Surrey, and Langley’s Child Development Centre.

A final tally was still being finalized as of Monday.

Sunday’s game also featured an autograph session as well as a VIP dinner afterwards with members of the alumni team.

The evening was organized by Craighead, with several local businesses stepping up as sponsors.

He did say that there is a chance the game could become an annual event.

The Langley Knights have pulled to within one point of the first-place Aldergrove Kodiaks after posting back-to-back victories to open January while the Kodiaks failed to pick up a point for the first time in six games.

Aldergrove leads the PJHL’s Harold Brittain Conference with a record of 15-10-2-5 and 37 points, one better than Langley’s 17-14-1-1 and 36 points. The Kodiaks do hold a game in hand.

The Knights snapped a four-game losing streak, winning 3-2 in overtime on Jan. 1 against the Mission City Outlaws and then pounding the Ridge Meadows Flames 7-2 the following night.

The first game saw Langley down 2-0 with less than two minutes to play, but Colin Catchpole and Carson Rose scored power-play goals to force overtime and Rose’s second goal at 2:29 of the extra period gave the Knights the second point.

Nickolas Trenciansky stopped 27 shots for the victory.

Against Ridge Meadows, seven different players found the back of the net, led by Rose’s one goal and two assists. Alex Kalau, Tristan Craighead, Mitchell Biermann, Joshua Smith and Jackson Surbey had the other goals.

Cole Forbes stopped 31 shots for the victory.

Aldergrove was blanked 6-0 by the Grandview Steelers on Sunday at the Burnaby Winter Club. The Kodiaks had gone 4-0-1-0 in their past five games.

“A Mothers love lives within the hearts of her children forever” Our Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt and Friend Violet passed away peacefully on Dec. 13, 2014.

Born in Athabasca, AB, Violet was a longtime resident of Surrey, BC Violet was a dedicated and hardworker, she worked for Mount St. Joseph Hospital and Peace Arch Hospital and upon retiring she then served on the Peace Arch Hospital Ladies Auxiliary.

Violet loved to cook, the more her family ate, the happier she was. She volunteered endless hours of cooking and serving to the Peace Arch Auxiliary, Royal Canadian Legion in Surrey, Semiahmoo Fish and Game Club and the White Rock Lioness Chapter.

In addition to cooking Vi loved to travel, farm, fish, garden and shop. She had an exceptional green thumb, every Spring and Summer she would spend countless hours in her garden and the evenings were spent either cooking, canning, researching new recipes or solving a crossword puzzle.

Always busy.

She will be dearly missed by all that knew and loved her.

Violet is predeceased by her mother Hima, father Phillip, brother Peter, sisters Mary and Julie.

Survived by her son Dean Swedgan, daughter Debra (Ken) O’How, sisters Rose (Don) Sherstan, Tammy (Ron) Yestal, brother Alex, sister in law Delores Labaschuk, Grandchildren Curtis Swedgan, Amber Swedgan, Tyler O’How, Brittany O’How, great grandchildren Calib, Caden, Cara Swedgan. Numerous nieces and nephews (Karen you were like one of her own) As per Violet’s wishes there will be a private family service to be held in the Summer of 2015.

After graduation Scott joined the Engineering program at UBC. His first year at UBC, where he lived in residence, he made countless friends and had the time of his life. In second year, he joined DKE (Delta Kappa Epsilon) Fraternity and found a brotherhood of young men who made a lasting impact and offered great support in tough times.

Wherever Scott went, he made new friends and was always looking out for others. All those who met Scott were impacted by his compassion, thoughtfulness, integrity and great sense of humour. If you were lucky enough to know him, then you probably loved him - we surely did.

To all of the kind people who helped our family through a very difficult year including, Dr. Lee, Dr. Karvat, Dr. Shore, the amazing Nurses on N51 at Surrey Memorial Hospital and Fraser Valley Cancer Center, Dr. Sharon Duncan and Langley Home Care - thank you are the only words we have and they seem inadequate. Your kindness, compassion, love and support made all the difference.
